Settle!

Matthew Martin, RT 2014 Penn Heart & Vascular “Never Settle” Award Recipient

C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s to Matthew Martin, RT, Cardiac Cath tech IV, recipient of the new Penn Heart and Vascular “Never Settle” Award. Matt was nominated by his coworkers as an employee who consistently goes above and beyond to help his cardiovascular patients, their families, and coworkers, demonstrating extraordinary compassion and “never settling” or compromising in the delivery of patient care. Four employees, one from each Penn Medicine hospital entity, were chosen to receive this new award. On February 26, the PAH Cath Lab leadership, physicians, and staff surprised Matt with a cake and official presentation of the award. Here is just a sampling of the many wonderful things Matt’s nominators had to say about him: •  Matt is never afraid to question the status quo in order to improve our department and therefore, the quality of care we provide to patients. This past year in particular he worked very hard to elevate the professional practice within the department which has allowed us to successfully implement all of the new technology and procedures.

2014

The UPHS Quality and Safety Awards have been a longstanding opportunity for our hospital teams to formally celebrate their achievements in quality and patient safety over a 12 month period. The Award is designed to acknowledge UPHS departments who have exhibited leadership and innovation in activities that ensure high quality clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, patient safety, and cost efficiency. Winning applications are reviewed and selected by a multidisciplinary committee — there were 100 submissions for 2013 — using a standard scoring methodology. Winning teams were officially awarded at a ceremony in January. Congratulations to all the PAH winning teams!

Celebrate Service: National Volunteer Week, April 6-12 This year marks the 40th anniversary of National Volunteer Week, demonstrating the enduring importance of recognizing our country’s volunteers for their vital contributions. Held this year from April 6 to 12, National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities and demonstrate that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. National Volunteer week has grown exponentially since it was established in 1974, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week all across the U.S. This special week is about taking action and encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change — discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to make a difference. “However, for us here at Pennsylvania Hospital, National Volunteer Week is a time for us to recognize and honor all of our wonderful volunteers who selflessly give their time and of themselves to help us with our mission to be the best place for a patient to be a patient,” said Eileen Murphy, director of Volunteer Services at PAH.

`` Shown here from L to R and representing the different types of volunteers at the hospital are: Nursing Unit Volunteer, Meredith Hanrahan; Student Ambassador Volunteer, Brigitte Robinson; Volunteer Patient Representative, Eleanor Nalle; and PAH Pet Therapy Program Volunteers, Joe Ingersoll and Nicholas, his black Labrador Retriever.

Donate Life

PAH Joins Phase II of HAP Campaign to Increase Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donor Registrations More than 121,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and time is running out. Today, 18 of them will die because not enough organs are available for transplantation. Hundreds of thousands of others whose lives would benefit from the gift of tissue and eye donations continue to wait and hope.

Joining the campaign is easy.

There will be employee registration drives in the Elm Garden Cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Friday, April 11 – Also Blue & Green Day! Wednesday, April 16 & 23

In Pennsylvania alone, there are more than 8,400 people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. PAH, along with HUP, PPMC and other hospitals in our region, has again joined The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania as a Hospital Partner in Phase II of the HAP Donate Life Hospital Campaign. (www.donatelifepa.org) Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, the campaign brings together hospitals statewide working with organ donation organizations, state associations in the health care sector to increase the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors by May 15. “As a Hospital Partner in this initiative, I encourage all members of our staff to join with our partner organ donation organization Gift of Life (www.donors1.org) in educating our hospital community on the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donations and providing simple and convenient opportunities for people to register as donors,” said R. Michael Buckley, MD, executive director of PAH.

Wednesday, May 7 To learn more about donation and to directly register your decision to be a donor, please visit http://www.donors1.org/penn.

Know the Facts

»» Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history. »» All major religions in the U.S. support organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as an act of charity and generosity. »» If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life. Donations can only be considered after you are deceased. »» When you are on the waiting list for an organ, the only factors that determine eligibility are the severity of your illness, time spent waiting, blood type, and other important medical information, not financial status or “celebrity” status.

Did you know? Did you know that the Health System offers paid leave of absences to all employee living donors? Eligible employees may request a Bone Marrow/Organ Donation leave of absence when they intend to donate bone marrow, stem cells or a major organ to another person. Eligible employees will be paid regular time. No vacation, personal or sick time will be utilized and time off will not be counted towards the employee’s leave entitlement. The amount of time off granted will be determined on a case by case basis, depending on the type of donation to be made. For more information, interested employees may contact Disability Management in Human Resources at: 215-829-7077.

»» An open casket funeral is possible for organ, eye and tissue donors. Through the entire donation process the body is treated with care, respect and dignity. »» Transplantable organs include the heart, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, liver, and intestines. Tissue that can be donated includes eyes, skin, bone, heart valves, and tendons. One donor can improve the lives of many people.
