Big Honors
for Our Littlest Pat ients
It’s estimated that ten to 15 percent of babies born each year in the U.S. spend time in a neonatal intensive care (NICU). At PAH, approximately 40 percent of the babies born are from high-risk pregnancies and about half of those babies require advanced neonatal care. Few families are prepared for the immense strain and challenges they will face as their babies fight for their lives. For the first time ever, September is Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month (http://www. nicuawareness.org/) established this year by Project Sweet Peas, a national non-profit organization coordinated by volunteers who, through personal experience provide support to families with infants in intensive care and to those who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. “September is now officially a month of awareness designed to honor NICU patients, their families and the health professionals who care for them,” said Michelle Ferrant,

MSN, RNC-NIC, CBC, co-chair, ICN Family Advisory Council. “With Pennsylvania Hospital’s reputation of having one of the best intensive care nurseries in the US, we certainly want to be a part of the national celebration and by increasing awareness we can strengthen our network and formulate more resources and solutions for our families experiencing life in the NICU.” The PAH ICN Family Advisory Council is hosting an Afternoon Tea on Monday, September 29, at 3 pm, in the ICN family lounge on 2 Cathcart. “The Council thought an a Tea would provide an wonderful opportunity for parents of infants still in the Intensive Care Nursery to mingle in a friendly atmosphere, We wanted to offer them a place and a few moments together to de-stress,” said Ferrant.
PAH is hosting an Infant Remembrance Day Me morial & Candle Li ghtin g October 10 at 6:30 p.m. | Physic Garden and Great Court The names of children who have passed away will be read during the ceremony. PAH founded an Intensive Care Nursery Family Advisory Council this year as a way for former patient families to work with current patient families and inter-disciplinary hospital staff members to promote patient and family centered care in the unit. The council’s goals are to provide advisement for hospital staff, mentorship and support for patient families, and to inform, educate, and fundraise for the ICN.

September officially kicks off the “back to school” and fall season. It’s also the 11th annual National Preparedness Month. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, National Preparedness Month aims to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to all types of emergencies, including natural disasters, mass casualties, radiation emergencies, biological and chemical threats, and terrorist attacks. The U.S. health care system Hospitals play a huge role in preparedness and readiness to respond to emergencies and national disasters and are a critical link to stabilizing a community and helping it recover from crisis and disaster situations. PAH — as does all of Penn Medicine — partakes in year-round training and planning to develop and execute emergency response strategies. “Through the ‘constant state of readiness’ culture we foster here at Pennsylvania Hospital we strive to make emergency preparedness routine for our
staff and employees and promote personal and organizational resiliency,” said John Wierzbowski, MSC, MPH, manager of Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Emergencies happen unexpectedly and impact communities for days at a time. “As health care providers, we have a unique responsibility to care for our patients 24/7 — no matter what — during emergencies that impact the hospital and surrounding region, be it a snowstorm, mass casualty incident, or pandemic,” said Wierzbowski. “If we personally protect our households and loved ones we’ll all be better able to seamlessly provide care for our patients when they need us most. The better you are prepared at home, the better prepared you will be to report to work during an emergency the quicker the community will recover. National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder for all of us to brush off our personal emergency plans to ensure that we and our loved ones are fully prepared in our households and workplace.”
