Happy Valley has been ranked one of the best places to live, work, and retire by so many sources – Forbes and Kiplinger’s, to name just two – that we can’t keep up! Spend some time visiting us and seeing everything we have to offer, and you’ll understand why. Step back in time and explore one of our many historical sites. Travel through our quaint towns and villages to visit their local shops and enjoy their seasonal festivals. Experience some of the unique tastes of the region found on our Central PA Tasting Trail. Enjoy a movie, musical, or theatrical performance at one of our local venues. Cheer on the athletes participating in the Pennsylvania Special Olympics or any of a host of other local, collegiate, or professional sporting events taking place while you’re here. Be sure to check out our calendar of events to plan your visit and see what might be happening while you’re here. And be sure to contact the Central PA Convention and Visitors Bureau to learn about the latest deals and packages that will make your visit even more enjoyable!

Central Pennsylvania is home to the Pennsylvania State University, which is recognized by many sources as one of the leading, most well-respected public universities in the nation. So when you hear us roar, it’s not just because the Nittany Lion is our mascot – it’s because we’re proud of our university and everything it does to make State College one of the top college towns in the United States. Be sure to visit Penn State while you’re here and experience everything the campus has to offer. Enjoy the Botanic Gardens at the Arboretum or have your picture taken at the Nittany Lion Shrine. Take in a sporting event at Beaver Stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center, Medlar Field, Pegula Ice Arena, or historic Rec Hall; if you enjoy the arts, tour the Palmer Museum of Art or enjoy a performance in Eisenhower Auditorium. Cheer on the students participating in THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the country. Last but not least, top off your visit with an ice cream cone at the worldfamous Berkey Creamery. We’re sure you’ll be roaring with excitement in no time!

The Nittany Lion, Penn State’s mascot since 1904, was officially recognized when the statue was presented as a gift to the University by the Class of 1940. The shrine was renovated with a gift from the Class of 2012.

You’re getting married?
Congratulations!
Photo: Nittany Lion Inn, University Park
We realize this is one of the most important life decisions you’ll ever make, and we’re so excited that you decided it should happen here in Happy Valley! We also understand how stressful planning a wedding can be. This is your special day, so of course you want it to be perfect; you’ve also invited friends and family to share this moment with you, so you want to make it a memorable occasion for them as well. But there’s SO much to do and SO many things to take care of – how could you ever possibly be ready in time? Just sit back, take a deep breath, and relax – Happy Valley is the perfect location for your wedding. Not sure where to start? Just use this step-by-step guide to put you on the right path for planning a wedding day that is perfect for you! HAPPY VALLEY WEDDINGS • 83

Step One: First Things First We’re assuming you already popped the question if you’re planning the wedding, but we don’t want to jump too far ahead. Did a ring accompany the proposal? If not, then one of our local jewelers will be happy to help you pick an engagement ring that fits your budget and shines brightly forever. Already have your engagement ring? Then these fine establishments are also the perfect place to choose your wedding rings and/or any special jewelry that you may need to compliment your wedding attire.

Step Two:
Set a Date and Set a Budget This may be one of the more important steps of the planning process. In terms of the date, it may be better to start by selecting a month or season that is important to you and then hone in on the specific day based on the availability of the location you desire. In terms of the budget, be realistic – you want the day to be special, but you don’t want to mortgage your future! The budget will also help you determine the size and extravagance of your wedding, reception and guest list.

Step Three: Pick Your Venue Were you hoping to have a small, more traditional wedding, or were you planning something a little bigger in the great outdoors? With a variety of choices – churches/spiritual centers, Victorian B&Bs, scenic historical settings and rustic getaways – Happy Valley offers an outstanding backdrop for your special day! Planning to have your wedding ceremony and reception at separate locations? If so, Happy Valley has a host of indoor and outdoor venues ready to make sure both events are memorable!

Step Four: Choose your Bridal Party
& Prepare your Guest List On a day this special, you want the most special people in your lives to be there with you. The bridesmaids and groomsmen, in particular, are some of the people nearest and dearest to your heart – not to mention a great shoulder to lean on when it comes to planning the wedding and helping you take care of the details! Looking for the perfect gift to thank them for all of their support and hard work? Treat them to a “spa day” at a local spa or salon, take them to a local sporting event or show, or buy them a unique gift from one of central Pennsylvania’s shops or retailers. Of course, not everybody you want to be there can be in your wedding party! Work on your guest list, but be sure to base the list on how fancy you want the celebration to be within your established budget. Once that is done, it’s time to choose your “save the date” cards, wedding invitations, and/or wedding programs. Just make sure all of these pieces capture the spirit of the day and your personality as a couple – and if you need any help, rest assured there are several local businesses ready to accommodate all of your printing needs.

Step Five: Assemble Your Wedding “Dream Team”
It’s YOUR day, so YOU get to decide how to celebrate it; but, that doesn’t mean you need to take care of everything yourself! Leave the details to the experts – not only will they put your mind at ease, but they also may provide useful suggestions about things you never even considered. We mentioned a few of the experts with whom you should consult in the first four steps; here’s a list of a few more experts to also consider adding to your wedding “dream team.” Fortunately, plenty of these experts are at your disposal right here in Happy Valley!
p Wedding Planners p Formalwear for the bridal party (depending on just how formal you want to be) p Wedding Venues (for the ceremony and the reception) p Salons and Spas (to allow the bridal party to relax and get ready for that special day in style)
p Transportation (to and from the ceremony and the reception for the bridal party and guests if necessary)
p Florists (for the bridal bouquet, the boutonnieres and wedding decorations) p Photographers and Videographers (to capture the day forever) p Caterers (to feed your guests if the reception venue doesn’t offer food service) p Bakeries (to make the perfect wedding cake) p Music and Entertainment (to help you dance the night away) p Gifts and Favors (for the bridal party and your guests) p Hotel Accommodations (for the bridal party and for those planning to stay overnight) 88 • www.HAPPYVALLEY WEDDINGS.org
Photo: Woodrings Floral Gardens
Step Six: Get Ready for the Big Day Now that you’ve assembled your dream team, it’s time to get down to the nuts and bolts: p Select a wedding gown, and then choose the groom’s and bridal party’s attire based on the gown you’ve chosen p Set up a wedding registry p Put your wedding “dream team” into action p Reserve a block of rooms at your local hotel(s) of choice p Send out your invitations p Schedule your rehearsal dinner p Plan the perfect honeymoon to coincide with your perfect wedding p Arrange for someone to officiate your wedding and go to the local courthouse to obtain a marriage certificate (IMPORTANT: Out of everything else, these are the two things that you just can’t forget to do!) p Pack for your honeymoon (and don’t forget to take care of the passports if you’re traveling out of the United States)
