Carmen Triple Bill
Join the Movement... Artistic Director Roy Kaiser announces a breathtaking and innovative 2010-2011 Season: a dynamic collection of lush full-length ballets, thrilling contemporary pieces, Balanchine treasures, and brand new works. A landmark appearance at the first-ever Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in April, 2011, makes this season like no other in the Company’s history. In crafting the season, Mr. Kaiser aims to showcase the breadth of the Company’s repertoire as well as the dancers’ skill and artistry, engaging both loyal followers and new ballet-goers alike. “When you experience this season, you will see an incredible diversity in the choreographic styles the dancers of this Company are able to perform at an extremely high level. On each program, audiences will come away with a very different impression of the Company, and when you put them all together, it’s pretty extraordinary.”

“A dose of dazzle and brilliance… exhilarating by any standard… a resounding hit…” – San Francisco Chronicle
Roland Petit’s seductive Carmen is an irresistible blend of sensuality, theatricality, and style. You’ll find yourself spellbound by the torrid and tragic affair between the temptress Carmen and her lover, Don José. Pennsylvania Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence Matthew Neenan presents a world premiere, his 13th commission for the Company. Then, journey back to Pennsylvania Ballet’s roots with Concerto Barocco—clean, pure, and breathtaking. A simply sizzling evening of ballet: not to be missed! * The Company premiere of Carmen is made possible by a grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through Dance Advance.

In the Upper Room Choreography: T. Tharp Music: P. Glass, arr. K. Munkacsi
“Wheeldon’s mastery is unmistakable…” – The New York Times
Three of today’s strongest choreographic voices unite for one cutting-edge program. Bold and stripped-down, the Company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia translates ballet movement into inventive steps and duets. In The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, also a Company premiere, modern master William Forsythe produces a powerful contemporary work whose striking choreography and vibrant costumes will leave you breathless. Twyla Tharp’s theatrical In the Upper Room lends fire and energy to the program, with a thundering score that propels this rigorous display of in-your-face athleticism. Dance at its best: inventive, unrestrained, jubilant, and highly entertaining. February 2011 | Merriam Theater
Behold Pennsylvania Ballet’s own stunning version of the world’s most loved ballet. Premiered in 2004 to national acclaim, Christopher Wheeldon’s stellar production of Swan Lake was commissioned and performed to sold-out audiences for the Company’s 40th anniversary season. Wheeldon’s Swan Lake is based on the original Ivanov/Petipa classic and set to the timeless Tschaikovsky score but has been re-imagined for today’s audiences. The million-dollar production features spectacular sets and costumes set in the 19th-century milieu of the Paris Opera Ballet of Edgar Degas. Dazzling choreography and visual complexities illuminate ballet’s greatest love story. A unique opportunity to catch a superlative show! “The audience basked in its charm.” – The New York Times
Who Cares? Choreography: G. Balanchine Music: G. Gershwin with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra
Benjamin Millepied is “one of ballet’s most promising young choreographers...” – New York Magazine
Pennsylvania Ballet honors its Balanchine heritage with two works exemplifying his creative breadth. In Agon, minimalist costumes let Balanchine’s choreography take center stage. Then, Who Cares? brings a bit of Broadway to the ballet! You’ll be tapping your toes to the lively George Gershwin score, featuring beloved numbers like “The Man I Love” and “I Got Rhythm.” Next is a world premiere ballet from renowned choreographer Benjamin Millepied. A Principal Dancer at New York City Ballet, he is sure to draw a fresh perspective from his mentor, choreographer Jerome Robbins, a colleague of Balanchine himself. This mixed bill program showcases the supreme talents of the dancers to perfection.
A delightful romantic comedy! La Fille mal gardée (loosely translated as “The Wayward Daughter”) is Sir Frederick Ashton’s touching tale of two determined lovers and their quest to marry. Lise, the young daughter of a wealthy farmer, wishes to marry Colas, a handsome, young farm worker, but her mother, Mother Simone (who, in the tradition of English theater, is played by a man) disapproves. Set along a backdrop of simple country life, this uplifting ballet is brimming with charming characters (including dancing hens!), hilarious antics, and memorable dances. La Fille mal gardée celebrates the spirit of true love.
