Wishing you and yours a happy, homey, holiday season!
Nancy Trotman mortgages@nancytrotman.com 1-888-998-9513 More services, more lenders… at no cost to you!
There are NO COSTS to use a mortgage broker! We work for you, not the lenders.
“I have used Nancy for an initial mortgage as well as a complicated refinance. As a result of her service and diligence I would, without hesitation, recommend her to my friends. Nancy negotiated a far better rate than the one quoted from my bank and worked hard to make the entire process simple and hassle free. Thanks Nancy!” Jeff B.

The Eisenhauers return! The Langham Guest Artist Series presents the popular local folk/ country who bring the warmth and vitality of their simple, spare and beautiful songs in a special holiday show at the Langham theatre. Sheree and Jeremy spent a busy 2017 and 2018 touring in support of their album ‘The Road We Once Knew’ which they recorded in Nashville, no less, with Steve Dawson at his legendary Henhouse Studio. Their songs explore the concepts of distance, time and the wavering arcs of separation and reunion – a perfect tone of reflection for the winter season. Join them at the Langham, Saturday, December 15 at 7 pm. Tickets $15 at Willow Home Boutique and Sunnyside Naturals, Kaslo. $18 at door, 6:30 pm. Submitted by The Langham

Students and instructors will perform together at Spiritbar (422 Vernon Street, Nelson) on Thursday, December 13 with all proceeds going to the Nelson Food Cupboard. Students are eager to celebrate and show off their hard work and dedication by giving people a memorable night filled with fantastic music. Student-based bands, each featuring a Selkirk College music instructor, will bring funky and groovy sounds that the audience won’t soon forget. “The music program students and faculty are very excited to share a wide range of styles in this showcase,” says Selkirk College Instructor Laura Landsberg. “I am very proud of what the students have accomplished with their hard work and creativity. I also believe putting together a show and performing in the community is an integral part of the students’ education.” Here’s a rundown of what is in store for the Spiritbar stage. Therefore, we do not accept submissions of a controversial nature or that are criticizing or disparaging to other advertisements, firms, individuals, ethnic or religious groups. Education/Classes ADVERTISE YOUR CLASS IN THE PENNYWISE, give us a call at 1-800-663-4619. YOU WRITE IT...WE’LL PRINT YOUR COMMUNITY INFORMATION ARTICLES. Leave at our Kaslo Pennywise office (400A Ave), e-mail: editorial@pennywiseads.com, or mail to Pennywise, Box 430, Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0. Greg spent the majority of his life in and around Victoria B.C. where he graduated from Victoria High School and went on to start a family and run his own electrical company, Cobble Hill Electric. He eventually left the island to live in the Kootenay area, where he spent the remainder of his days working as an electrician and living a simple life doing what he enjoyed. Greg wanted nothing more in this world than to spend time with his children and young grandson, Rylan. He taught us to put family first, savor the small moments, and to be happy with what we have. He lived by his own rules, and never stopped having a good time.
The world will be a little duller without him in it. We love you, Dad. You will be forever missed. As per his wishes, there will be no formal service.

The youth, ages 12 – 18 were nominated for their involvement and volunteerism. Their activities include fundraising, helping home construction in Mexico, working with seniors, volunteering at the library and food hub, mentoring younger youth, helping at community functions, participating as board members, student trustees or youth liaison and work involving mental health. The evening started, reflecting on the value of philanthropy when the youth shared their best moments while volunteering and continued with discussions as to what they found inspiring, meaningful and important. They then related those discussions to what they believed are needs in the area that may not be met. These young people discussed topics that were meaningful and passionate to them which included, arts and culture, mentoring initiatives, continuing education, generational bridges, youth involvement/empowerment/self confidence, reduction of poverty and fair distribution of resources, animal welfare, sports and mental health. They then decided how to distribute $500 to local charities including KAAPS (animal welfare), the Langham for youth mentorship in the arts, music or video and the Kaslo Food Hub. The event, sponsored by the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society (CFNKLS) and facilitated by Shannon Isaac, youth worker with Kaslo and Up the Lake Youth Network (KULYN) was enjoyed by all. The youth also provided suggestions for a few improvements and a hearty recommendation to make this an annual event. Submitted by Joe Johnston

Meet Donnie! This fantastic tuxedo boy is 2.5-years old and was originally brought in as a stray. Donnie is super affectionate, loving a good scratch behind the ear and a head boop as he purrs his way into your heart. He likes a pretty relaxed atmosphere and would prefer a home without any young children. He has been an indoor/outdoor cat but would probably adapt nicely to be an indoor only “sleeping in a sunshiny window” kind of guy. For more information on Donnie, contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178, or stop by the shelter to meet him!

‘Waterline’ rock climbing update Climbers in the West Kootenay Region have received some welcome news. In September of this year, the property that includes one of the most popular climbing areas in the Kootenays, known as the Waterline Walls, was listed for sale. Fears were raised of possible residential development that would more than likely result in losing access to climbing and other recreational use. In recent years rock climbing has become a key part of the City of Castlegar tourism focus and climbers now visit this small Kootenay town from all over Canada, in large part to visit the Waterline. Now a pair of climbers from Nelson has purchased the Waterline property to secure climbing access. Mirek Hladik and June Ray are two long time Nelson residents who have been climbing and developing climbing in the West Kootenays for last three decades. Together, they owned one of the first indoor climbing gyms in BC, Gravity Climbing Centre, as well as mountain guiding and mountain bike shuttle services. June and Mirek have decided to purchase this land to protect it and preserve recreational access. “When we heard that someone wanted to purchase the Waterline, we decided we had to act fast” says Mirek. “It’s exciting to have a guaranteed access to the Waterline area, we have seen too many areas shut down in the past and it would be huge loss to see this one go.” The couple now plans to subdivide The Waterline crags in hope of selling it to a local group who can take on the liability risk, preserve climbing access and outdoor recreation. The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climbers (TAWKROC) has been approach by the new owners for that purpose. TAWKROC is a non-profit society that focuses on

safety and access issues for the climbing community in the West Kootenay. TAWKROC is also the current owner of the Kinnaird Bluffs climbing area, a property that was similarly purchased and saved from development several years ago. TAWKROC director Ian McDonald says “We are very excited about this potential opportunity and we plan to bring it to our membership to vote on in the near future.” Mirek and June have already been in contact with City of Castlegar officials to start the subdivision process. “We hope that this process won’t take more than four to five months and it will be ready for our spring climbing season. We would like there to be an improved parking area, outhouse and more hiking and biking trails as well.” Submitted by Mirek Hladik
Pregnancy support circles Nobody understands pregnant women better then other pregnant women. Pregnancy can be an amazing time, a confusing time, a happy time, a sad time, definitely an emotional time and usually all of the above. By the time you are pregnant, you may already have friends around, potentially you have work colleagues, possibly a partner and maybe even extended family. Usually however, you are the only one you know that is pregnant right now. Some of your friends may have already gone through this incredible experience, but now they are in the land of diapers, toddlers or teens and they speak fondly of their pregnancies or have horror stories of endless nausea and visits to the toilet. It may seem like nobody really gets what you are going through right now or everyone just wants to tell you “enjoy your rest now because you’ll need it in a few months”. That’s why Pregnancy Support Circles can be such a place of understanding, friendship and sharing. These women are truly your peers for this special time of your life. If you are pregnant and feel like you could use some information, support and friends that know exactly what you are talking about ‘in this moment’. Please come and join us at ‘Bellies’, a circle of support program specifically for pregnant moms at Family Place in Nelson. Call Cathy for more information at 250-3526678 extn. 1 or email her at cathys@kootenaykids.ca This time in your life is one to be cherished and honoured, but it is so much easier to do that when you are surrounded by those that can relate to what you may be going through. Kaslo Community Garden At the Kaslo Community Garden AGM in March it was decided to apply and become ‘Kaslo Community Garden Society’. We now announce Society status is official. On spring orientation day members found gardens and took part in a fruit pruning workshop. This season welcomed back the Kaslo Food Hub back and JVH students came once a week to work, plant a school garden and help plant Food Cupboard crops. This year the big project was to replace the Washington Avenue fence with a new gate for pedestrians and gate for vehicle deliveries. Two trees were planted on the boulevard. Members worked their gardens and helped at weekly work parties. During the Edible Garden Tour, KCGS hosted a workshop on perennials and a water-wise ambassador visited. The garden is ready for winter and for the last work party bulbs were planted to welcome you next spring in the Kaslo Community Garden. Submitted by Kaslo Community Garden Society

Argentine Tango weekend An Argentine Tango Beginner Boot Camp is being offered in conjunction with a full weekend workshop in Nelson on January 4, 5 and 6. This is the first time that instructors Patrick Marsolek and partner Lori Mitchell, from Missoula, Montana will offer classes specifically for beginners, in addition to experienced tangueros. On Friday evening January 4, the weekend kicks off with a welcoming potluck and a Tango Basics class. This class is will address the tango walk, the embrace and connection. Everyone is welcome to attend the potluck, the Basics class and the following informal Practica (tango practice dance) and social. Dancers will enjoy Marsolek’s accomplished DJ skills. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the Beginner Boot Camp 75 minute class commences at 10:30 am. This is a great opportunity to learn from these talented instructors in an intimate class situation with others who are also just starting or restarting their tango journey. Marsolek and Mitchell are knowledgeable, accessible and engaging instructors. Two additional classes are offered each afternoon for the more advanced dancers. Some exciting choices includes: Vals musicality and Enroques & Adornos. A chance to work on some of the fancy footwork identified with Argentine Tango. Dec. 11, 2018
An early Christmas present... The introduction of Zebra and Quagga mussels is the most pressing issue facing the Kootenay region. Zebra and Quagga mussels have infiltrated lakes and rivers in North America and caused an estimated $43 million in damage per year to hydropower stations and municipal water supplies. Not to mention what they would do to your favourite swimming hole. They can cover once beautiful beaches in sharp shells. Luckily, they are not in BC and we want to keep it that way. Prevention is key! Have your boat inspected and follow ‘Clean, Drain, Dry’ protocol in order to protect our waters. Next to prevention, the next best tool in our tool box is early detection and this is why we increased sampling frequency in 2018. Weekly plankton sampling for invasive mussels in the region area kicked off in June and ran until the end of October. The CKISS collected 350 samples at 34 sites within nine different high priority waterbodies. All of the samples sent to a provincial lab to be analyzed came back negative for free-swimming microscopic mussel larvae called veligers. This is good news considering mussels cannot be eradicated once established in a waterbody. Invasive mussels can cause all of the following impacts: • Clog water supply systems and hydropower facilities, increasing costs to the consumer. • Harm drinking water quality by causing toxic algae blooms. • Crash native fish populations such as sockeye salmon. • Cover beaches with foul-smelling, razor-sharp shells. • Displace native aquatic plants and wildlife, reducing biodiversity and ecosystem health. • Increase the growth of aquatic weeds, interfering with swimming and boating opportunities. Invasive mussels are at our doorstep! Now is the time to take action to protect our waters, there is no turning back the clock on a zebra and quagga mussel invasion.

Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre are collaborating to provide convenient new recycling opportunities for returnable beverage containers. When you drop off your recyclables at the trailer you will reduce waste going to landfills while providing funding for our local hospital. We look forward to partnering with these organizations as we look ahead to the next phases of this fundraising program which will consist of a new and improved container at the Lakeside recycling depot, and containers at Kokanee Park Store and the Nelson & Area Waste Transfer Station.
