Reports of the death of print have been greatly exaggerated. Pennywise, your community paper, is still vibrant and relevant today in a digital world.
Circulation
It’s true many daily newspapers have seen their circulation decline. But Pennywise’s circulation has stayed remarkably consistent over the past 13.5 years since we began CVC audits. Not all print is dead – Pennywise, your community paper, is alive and thriving. And this doesn’t count the 3000+ weekly online readers either.
Readership
You think people don’t read papers anymore? Think again! Pennywise readership is as high as ever. Over 81% of people who receive Pennywise, read Pennywise. That’s amazing. That’s better saturation and targeting than your website or social media posts could hope for! Just think, 8 out of 10 households are reading Pennywise right now.
Purchase Intent
In this age of Amazon and other online retailers, it’s incredible that so many people plan their shopping activities using a local free paper … nearly 83% as a matter of fact. Pennywise readers read your ads and use them to plan their shopping and purchases.

Village of Kaslo Waterfront and Parks Strategy Project
Who is this for? The Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Committee (PROSC) are encouraging YOU, the community of Kaslo, to participate in the Village of Kaslo Waterfront and Parks Strategy Project. What is the Waterfront and Parks Strategy Project? Parks, open space and recreation have been identified as valuable resources for residents and visitors alike. Striving to manage these areas to their full potential, the Village has recognized the need for an environmental management plan, a beach grooming plan, an invasive species control program and the creation of standard maintenance guidelines for Village staff and volunteers. In addition, much of this work will support and provide recommendations for a future Parks Master Plan for the community. How will the Project be carried out? The Project Management Team will study and evaluate all regulatory, social and environmental aspects of the waterfront and upland parks. This project will expand upon the work initiated by the Parks, Open Space and Recreation objectives in Kaslo’s 2016 Consolidated Parks Regulation, 2014 Sustainability Strategy for the Village of Kaslo and the 2011 Village of Kaslo Official Community Plan. Community consultation is central to the success of this project. PROSC and the Project Management Team are requesting your input on the important values and uses for Kaslo’s waterfront and parks spaces. The Team has already been engaging with community members in a variety of ways to gather information and ideas on park and waterfront use. How, Where and When can YOU participate? The first public open house will be held on Thursday, September 14 at JV Humphries Elementary/Secondary School from 5:30 pm – 8 pm. This will be a drop-in format with no formal presentation in order to accommodate as many attendees as possible. A second public open house will be held in October. ...continued on page 24

Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifically electoral areas A, D, and E within the RDCK.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open space conservation. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will be given priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDCK for final funding approval. To apply for funding, go to www.kootenayconservation.ca and click on the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund tab. Review the Terms of Reference, paying particular attention to Section 8 – Fund Design and then apply using the application form provided. The closing date for project submissions is 4:30 pm PDT November 1, 2017.

Kaslo & Area HEALTH MATTERS Community Paramedics at the Food Hub Community Paramedics have been setting up a regular Community Wellness Clinic at the Food Hub, located in St Andrew’s United Church.
ber. Watch for Fall Food Skills, a series of 4 workshops sponsored by North Kootenay Lake Community Services Food Hub, beginning midmonth. Apple pressing, gleaning programs and bear-proofing our yards will be highlighted on Sept 17, presented by WildSafe BC. Mid-November, the Food Hub hosts 2 films at the Langham as part of the Deconstructing Dinner Film Fest, an award winning set of films designed to expand awareness of the origins of our food and share the potential for food to transform communities.
Climate Change And Your Health The global climate is changing. On average the temperature of the earth is rising, causing more extreme weather events such as the droughts, fires and floods much of our region has experienced this year. These changes affect natural and human environments (air quality, clean water, and food sources) and also can have negative effects on our health. Near the end of September you can visit to chat about your health, have blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels checked, and get advice on any number of health and wellness issues. While you are there, pick up a PRIME (Personal Records in Medical Emergency) package to record your health data and have it on hand, just in case.
Food For Fall Thoughts Summer is drawing to a close and so is the availability of oh-so-fresh veggies and fruits from our local growers. There is still time to buy fresh, preserve some food, and get a winter supply of root vegetables. Local farmers’ markets and harvest fairs continue until the end of the month selling healthy foods and handmade arts and crafts. Preserving, wildcrafting and making the best use of foods for the winter season will be the subject of events beginning in Septem-

The impacts on health from climate change are varied and will depend on where you live. Impacts on health can include respiratory diseases, heart disease, heat-related illnesses, mental illness, malnutrition, infections and other illnesses. There are a number of things you can do to protect your health from the climate change related issues in your area. • Air quality: Check the Air Quality Health Index for your area. If it is poor, limit your outdoor activity and follow the other guidelines provided. • Sun, heat and extreme temperatures: Stay covered, use sunscreen, stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heat-related illness during extreme heat events. Never leave children or pets unattended in the car. • Food and water safety: Be aware of food recalls and boil water advisories in your area. This is important not just for drinking, but also food preparation, tooth brushing, etc. To report suspected food or
water-borne illnesses call 250-505-7200, 1-877-221-3388. • Insects and disease: Learn more about disease-carrying insect threats in your area (e.g. Lyme disease, West Nile virus) and take precautions if you may be interacting with potential carriers of infectious diseases. • Fires, floods and other emergencies: In preparation for environmental emergencies, put together an emergency kit and evacuation plan. See Government of Canada’s Get Prepared Website for tips. Fortunately, everyone can help to limit the negative effects from climate change by reducing one’s carbon footprint or personal and workplace greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here are a few things that can make a big difference: Consider “greening your commute”: try walking, cycling, carpooling or taking transit – it doesn’t have to be every day – using alternate transportation even once in a while can make a difference. Reduce your energy use: switch off your computer, lights and other electronics when not in use. Waste less – want less: reduce what you use, re-use items and recycle. Go local: whenever possible buy local foods and local goods. When you reduce your personal GHG emissions you’ll be helping to improve air and water quality in the short term. Over the long term, you’ll be helping to secure our water and food resources, reduce weather and temperature extremes, and help curb the spread of disease carrying insects. All of which will improve our health. To learn more about what Interior Health is doing and what you can do to lessen the impacts of climate change on your health visit our Climate Change webpage. Incommapleux film and discussion at The Langham
From award-winning filmmaker Damien Gillis (Fractured Land) and the Valhalla Wilderness Society comes a new documentary of breathtaking beauty, Primeval: Enter the Incomappleux. This 20 minute film tells the story of the majesty, magic and endurance of one of the world’s last truly intact temperate rainforests – right in our backyard – the incomparable Incomappleux. To document its 2,000 year old trees and rare lichens, Gillis joined a Herculean expedition of conservationists, biologists and wilderness explorers, deep into the heart of the Kootenay’s Selkirk Mountains. ...continued on page 28

Visiting the Incomappleux is like going back in time to a forest that has been growing continuously since the last ice age – utterly untouched by the hand of man. But in recent decades, most of the ancient rainforest in the Incomappleux Valley has been logged. The magnificent core that is left has been spared only by the hard work of a small band of defenders. Come see this larger than life world for yourself on the big screen, along with a multimedia presentation by Valhalla Director Craig Pettitt on the Selkirk Mountain Caribou Park proposal – a plan to preserve the Incomappleux from the very real threat of logging. Access to the ancient forest has always been difficult and few people have seen it. Now, you are invited to experience the Incomappleux for yourself in all its splendour at The Langham in Kaslo on September 16 at 7 pm. $10 donation at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm. www.thelangham.ca Submitted by The Langham
