Off-road vehicle and backcountry restrictions reminder
The BC Wildfire Service reminds the public that the operation of any off-road vehicle for recreational or hunting purposes on Crown land remains prohibited within the Southeast Fire Centre. In addition, all Crown land within the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District remains closed to public access due to the current fire danger ratings and the number of wildfires burning in the region. While some parts of BC have been experiencing cooler temperatures and rain, the fire danger rating is still ‘high or extreme’ in many areas of the Southeast Fire Centre. The BC Wildfire Service continually monitors conditions in the region and these restrictions may be expanded or rescinded as needed. The off-road vehicle
prohibition that is in effect throughout the Southeast Fire Centre and the public access restriction that is in effect in the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District will remain in place until conditions warrant otherwise and the BC Wildfire Service rescinds these two measures. A map of the area affected by the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District closure is available online: http://ow.ly/ EfiR30eQBUm Anyone found in contravention of the off-road vehicle prohibition or the backcountry closure may be issued a violation ticket in the amount of $767. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The Southeast Fire Centre extends from the US border in the south to the Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the BC – Alberta border in the east. The Southeast Fire Centre includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. To report an off-road vehicle violation, call the Report All Polluters and Poachers (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555 toll free. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, visit: www. bcwildfire.ca Twitter: http://twitter.com/BCGovFireInfo Facebook: http://facebook.com/BCForestFireInfo Submitted by Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development BC Wildfire Service

Writers Deryn Collier and Keith Liggett
Kootenay writers workshops
Registration is now open for the second St. Eugene Writers’ Conference, November 9 to 13, featuring workshops conducted by four writers from the East and West Kootenays among other speakers. The event will be held at the St. Eugene Resort, located just north of Cranbrook. Presenting workshops November 10 to 12 will be Fernie’s Keith Liggett (on finding your voice), Cranbrook’s Sioux Browning (screenwriting), Nelson’s Deryn Collier (fiction) and Winlaw’s Tom Wayman (poetry). A manuscript evaluation workshop for those with a completed manuscript in any genre will run simultaneously November 9 to 12, led by Vancouver’s Mark Kusnir. Tuition plus two nights lodging at the Resort for these workshops is $665, or $710 for registrants after October 15. This amount includes two breakfasts and a conference dinner on November 11. Tuition alone for the three day workshops is $425 and $600 for Kusnir’s four day workshop. A one day workshop on self-publishing with Kaslo’s Randy Morse, Keith Liggett and other guests will round out the conference November 13. Tuition plus a night’s lodging for the self-publishing workshop is $165. Tuition alone is $85, or registrants in other conference workshops can attend for $65. The conference will include afternoon panel discussions on a range of writing related topics, said conference director Keith Liggett. The conference dinner November 11 will feature Fernie author Angie Abdou, speaking about her new novel In Case I Go. More information on the conference, including presenters’ bios and how to register, is available at http://steugene.ca/en/events-and-offers/ st-eugene-writers-conference-2017/#Writers “By offering three and four day workshops, the St. Eugene Writers Conference provides a venue for writers to develop their craft without the substantial time and financial commitment of academic courses,” Liggett said. “Our faculty all have extensive workshop experience. The sessions are supportive, but at the same time, provide substantive feedback to the writer.” Submitted by Tom Wayman PAGE PAGE 12 12

30 seasons of setting the stage!
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Capitol Theatre in Nelson is set to celebrate with a stellar lineup for the 2017/2018 season. In addition to the usual exciting lineup, a special anniversary celebration, Setting the Stage: 30 Years of Making a Scene, is in the works for March 10. The new season features 12 main stage theatre, music and dance performances. The Arts Club Theatre of Vancouver appears twice, with Mom’s the Word 3: Nest 1/2 Empty and ONEGIN, which was written by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille. Ragmop Theatre will treat us to a wonderfully bizarre mastery of physical theatre and Shay Kuebler returns with his contemporary dance piece Telemetry featuring tap dancer Danny Nielson. OURO Collective will be on stage with their dance performance Tangent and deliver workshops on hip-hop, waacking, breaking, popping and contemporary dance. We have a selection of music for all tastes from jazz to world music and amazing performance about obsessive-compulsive disorder Brain by Brendan McLeod. Ballet Joergen Canada will treat us to Anastasia and since we know that laughter is the ultimate medicine we are presenting two hilarious comedy acts. “This season, Capitol Theatre performances will start at 7:30 pm to make it easier for patrons who have to travel back home in the winter months and for parents who have to hire a babysitter,” says executive director Stephanie Fischer. “Our patrons have been asking for this and we’ve acted!” “This year special appreciation is due to those who had the vision and tenacity to refurbish a damaged old theatre,” says Fischer. Originally built in 1927 and reopened in 1988, the theatre is thriving thanks to everyone whose efforts brought the Capitol back to life, she explains. “What does the future hold? If the past is any indication, it’s going to be amazing.” The Capitol’s season brochure will arrive in mailboxes in September, with full subscriptions offered at a 20% discount. A full calendar is available at www. capitoltheatre.bc.ca Submitted by Stephanie Fischer

Haiku in the Mountains poetry workshop with New Denver poet, Sean Arthur Joyce, kicks off the Langham’s Gala weekend in Kaslo, Memory and Reflection, the 75th Anniversary of Japanese Canadian Internment in WWII on Thursday, October 5. In this age of social media and instant communications it can be a challenge to hear the ‘still, small voice’ so essential to creative inspiration. With so many voices competing for attention, we can lose ourselves – and our contact with nature – in the noise. Yet in traditional forms of Japanese poetry such as haiku, we are returned to our capacity for meditative thought. For 450 years, the great Japanese masters cultivated this exquisite art of understatement and attention to fine detail. Far more than just observation, the writing of haiku elicits an emotional response to nature and the events of our lives. It’s also an excellent tool for writers to cultivate discipline in their craft. ...continued on page 28 This, and other editorial articles may be viewed, printed or downloaded from the Editorial page at: www.pennywiseads.com

Reports of the death of Print have been greatly exaggerated. Your community paper, is still vibrant and relevant today in a digital world*. Myth #1: People spend most of their time online and don’t read printed materials anymore. New York Times: The digital revolution hasn’t put an end to print media, but, rather, has led to the emergence of a new type of reader – a ‘hybrid reader’ – who can easily juggle devices and paper. Washington Post: When it comes to reading for both learning and pleasure, millennials still prefer print, while the findings of a Pew Research Centre survey reveal that people favour reading traditional print books over digital products. These preferences are well summarised in a Hubcast white paper, which encourages marketers to use print advertising for the following reasons: While people may spend a great portion of their time on digital devices each day, the quality of their digital reading experience isn’t necessarily on par with that of print material. 1. Printed material is easier to read and navigate than digital content.
4. Digital reading doesn’t offer us the same tactile experience as print reading.
2. Our ability to retain information is better when we read printed materials.
5. Print continues to maintain its credibility – more so than digital.
3. We spend more time browsing, scanning and skim-reading content on digital devices, so we’re less likely to absorb what we read.
6. A marriage of digital and print can be more powerful than each medium alone.
To be successful, advertise multiple ways on multiple days.

The Langham’s 2017-2018 Guest Artist Series kicks off in rowdy fashion with musician/comedian Shirley Gnome in the Langham theatre in Kaslo, Saturday, September 30 at 8 pm. Gnome is a multi-award winning cabaret musician known for her explicit lyrics, hilarious insights and gorgeous voice. From the west coast of Canada comes this saucy songstress singing you outrageously taboo and obscenely honest songs that will have you in stitches. Internationally acclaimed, she has wowed audiences and critics alike with sell out shows across Canada, the US, Australia and the UK. You may have heard her on Dan Savage’s podcast The Savage Lovecast and on Sirius XM. She has recently signed with Canada’s largest independent music label (604 Records) and will be releasing her 4th album this year. “One of the hardest things a comic can do is take a simple sex joke and make it clever and relevant. Despite the level of dirtiness that Shirley sings about she is extremely smart and clever, providing the audience with amazing twists and turns that carry a profound sense of hilarity.” – Onstage Ottawa It’s an award winning, cleverly-carnal cabaret comedy that is NOT for the faint of heart! Advanced tickets $18 at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Boutique. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Tickets, $20 at the door. www.thelangham.ca Submitted by Paul Grace-Campbell

Looking for a mortgage? Buying a house? Renovating? First time mortgage? Time to consolidate? Existing mortgage up for renewal? Need a second opinion? I have used Nancy for an initial mortgage as well as a complicated refinance. As a result of her service and diligence I would, without hesitation, recommend her to my friends and colleagues. Most recently, she was able to negotiate a far better rate than the one quoted from my bank and worked hard to make the entire process simple and hassle free. Thanks Nancy! Jeff Burgoyne

GEM girls’ program returns to Kaslo
With support from the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society, the Girls’ Empowerment Movement (GEM) Program will be returning to Kaslo this fall. This funding allows the program to be offered for only $30, with subsidies available. Girls ages 10 to 13 are invited to enjoy a series of six workshops, which will include art, games, fun activities and discussions about what’s important to them. Guest presenters and artists from the community will join the girls to offer their skills and wisdom. Last year, presenters offered yoga, dance, singing, clay art, drumming and spray painting T-shirts. The dates of the program are Saturdays, October 14 to November 18, from 11 am to 3 pm. Lunch is provided. More information and registration forms can be found at: http://www.nelsonwomenscentre.com/what-we-do/ girls-empowerment-movement-gem/ Submitted by Raina Gardner
