Storytelling event explores lessons in grief and loss

Everyone has experienced grief at some point. On Thursday, September 14 at 7 pm a special storytelling event explores how we can live more fully through the lessons of death, grief and loss. The event takes place at the Nelson Public Library, 602 Stanley Street. Presented by Kalein Centre for Integrated Dialogue, Hospice Care and Education in partnership with the Library, the evening features three diverse storytellers as part of a weekend liminal learning lab event entitled “Who Cares? Evolving the Rich Potential of Compassionate Communities.” More information about the weekend is available at www.kaleincentre.org The Library event is open to the public. Sarah Conover is the author of seven books on world wisdom traditions and spirituality, as well as an educator in public schools and in prisons. Orphaned of parents and grandparents in a tragedy when she was a child, Sarah speaks about the human need to not just get over or even befriend grief, but to treat grief as sacred terrain. Corky Evans, past Nelson-Creston MLA and now farmer, speaks about how our culture has lost an understanding and acceptance of death and how the Health Care System has become more of a death avoidance system. And David Scanlan, a former medical and mental health social worker now completing a certificate in Creative Grief Coaching, is also an accomplished musician. In addition to a short talk about transforming grief, Dave will perform some songs that deal with grief and loss. The Kalein Centre’s Liminal Learning Lab coordinator Mike Stolte will moderate the event. Admission is free, but space is limited.

Kootenay Conservation Program

Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifically electoral areas A, D, and E within the RDCK. The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open space conservation. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will be given priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDCK for final funding approval.
