The Kootenays support Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

With over half a million Canadians currently living with dementia – a number that will only grow as the population ages – it has never been so important to be open to having a conversation about dementia. It’s never been so important to change the conversation. Though Awareness Month is now over, you can still visit www.ilivewithdementia.ca Find tips on how to be more dementia friendly, as well as resources to take action against stigma and be better informed about a disease that has the potential to affect every single one of us. You can also use the hashtag #ilivewithdementia to help spread the word. The Alzheimer Society of BC acknowledges the people of the Kootenays for their encouraging response to January’s annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and to our campaign intended to challenge stigma surrounding the disease: “Yes. I live with dementia. Let me help you understand.” Recently, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences released a report by a panel of dementia experts highlighting priorities for a national dementia strategy, work undertaken by the Public Health Agency of Canada in 2018. The authors emphasized the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles that might prevent or delay dementia, as well as overcoming stigma and fear of living with dementia. They stressed that it’s possible to live well with the disease. Increasingly, when we talk about raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, we need to talk about challenging stigma. Negative attitudes about the disease mean that when someone begins to suspect that they – or someone close to them – might have dementia, they are less likely to seek out a diagnosis. They’re less likely disclose their situation to others. Worrying that someone will judge them or think of them as being less of a person means people are less likely to ask for help. The dementia journey can be incredibly isolating. When we talk openly about the disease and challenge preconceived notions, people living with dementia begin to feel like they aren’t alone and can ask for help. Mon-Sat They can better prepare themselves for the challenges ahead. Communities play a key 8am-5:30pm role in helping people living with dementia, their families and caregivers feel like they belong, just by being aware of the disease and actively engaged with learning more about it. by Trail Home

Lady pirates and derring-do Shiver your timbers with a swashbuckling musical comedy! The Kootenay Home Educators (KHE) are excited to present their 12th annual musical theatre performance, the production Captain Bree, in the first week of March. Prepare to be dazzled by a comedic musical score including a charismatic Kootenay-based cast of home learners aged four to fifteen. The action begins when Captain Jennings’ crew jumps ship, leaving him with only a handful of prisoners and Fergus, a sailor who can’t swim, to protect his wealthy passengers from a pirate attack. Captain Bree and her lady pirates demand gold in exchange for the lives of the pretentious Madam Prescot, her nephew Samuel – who is masquerading as a girl to avoid becoming shark bait– and her niece Julia, who is bursting with desire to join the lady pirates much to her aunt’s dismay! While waiting for a response from the English, the pirates entertain themselves by teaching Julia the ropes of pirating, such as threatening their prisoners with the plank. But what is in store when a British fleet arrives, set on both hanging the pirates for their deeds and punishing Captain Jennings for not fighting them off more effectively? With catchy sea shanties and other rousing musical numbers, your audience will be humming along all the way to exciting surprise ending! Memorial Scholarship applications now open Are you a young person striving to make the world a safer place? Then why not apply for the Sarah Beth Therien Memorial Scholarship, a one-time award of $2,000 recognizing safety leaders among Canada’s youth. The Canada Safety Council and the family of Sarah Beth Therien created the memorial scholarship in 2013 to honour the memory of Sarah Beth Therien. Sarah Beth was a valued employee of the Canada Safety Council and a passionate advocate for children’s and traffic safety when she died of an unexpected heart arrhythmia on June 17, 2006. She was 32. Colleagues remember her as a kind and generous spirit who was always ready to help others. Before her sudden illness, she had made her family aware of her desire to be an organ donor. But her condition was classified as a ‘cardiac death’ and under existing Canadian medical protocol she would not have been eligible to become an organ donor. At the time, the Canadian medical community only accepted organ donation after brain death, for example, from strokes, injury, or trauma. When it became clear that Sarah Beth would not recover, her parents, Emile and Beth Therien, lobbied strongly to have the wishes of their daughter honoured. After their heart wrenching decision to remove life support, Sarah Beth became the first Canadian in nearly four decades to donate her organs after cardiac death. The gift of her kidneys gave back active, productive life to two individuals and her corneas restored full sight to two more. cont’d on pg 19

Why replace your old wood stove? A wood stove can help to keep you warm and cozy in the winter. But did you know that old, inefficient wood stoves can affect air quality in your community? Here in the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), our topography and the fact that many rural homes use wood stoves, combine to trap wood stove emissions within the steep valleys. Air quality data indicates that poor conditions often exist during the winter months, when wood stove use is at its peak. Wood smoke can be more harmful to human health than smog. To help encourage the replacement of non-efficient, non-EPA-certified stoves, the RDCK partnered with the Province of British Columbia, the BC Lung Association and local RDCK municipalities in 2009 to provide a regional wood stove exchange program. The RDCK then became one of 15 local governments to administer this program provincially. Since then, more than five hundred old stoves have been exchanged. The program continues in 2019, with funding to replace approximately 45 more non-EPA Certified stoves. Metamorphosis at the Bailey Metamorphosis is a show by Bernd Ogronik, of Worlds of Puppets who was the founder and artistic director of the Icelandic Centre for Puppetry Arts. Known for the amazing hand-carved wooden puppets he makes, which he magically brings to life during the performance. The show is a series of short stories that depicts the constantly changing nature of our existence and our perception. Nothing remains the way it seems, as it does not matter what we see, but how we see it. The cast consists of the most intricate marionettes and rod puppets, as well as unforgettable characters created simply with silk scarves and the hands and feet of the puppeteer. The context of the vignettes ranges from the trivial to the metaphysical. A strong emphasis lies on imagery, made possible through the surrealistic quality inherit in puppets. Presented by the Trail & District Arts Council as part of the Experiments in Entertainment Series, Metamorphosis is on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 pm in the Charles Bailey Theatre, 1501 Cedar Avenue, Trail.
