2019 Polar Plunge makes big splash! The Langham Cultural Society’s annual fundraiser and community event the Polar Bear Plunge was a huge success on New Year’s Day 2019. Over a 100 residents came out to watch some 40 brave plungers have a lovely wee dip in Kootenay Lake. The event raised over $4,500 for the Langham’s arts, culture and heritage programs. Fred died suddenly in an accident on December 15, 2018. We have lost a truly unique person. Fred grew up in Ontario, and in his travels as a young man he found the Kootenays. A floor layer by trade, he became a “milly,” working for Meadow Creek Cedar for many years. After the mill closed, he moved back to Ontario, but before long was back in the Kootenays. Fred lived enthusiastically and loved to laugh. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, wrenching on his endless fleet of vehicles, a good book (especially cowboy novels). The internet occupied him for hours and he loved spending time with friends. He was knowledgeable, loyal and hardworking; he seldom forgot a birthday and was always willing to lend a hand – a kind and true friend. Fred cherished his mother Jean, who he leaves along with his sisters Pat and Susie, brother John, nieces and nephews, and his Kootenay family. He is loved and deeply missed. May he be at peace in his next journey; he will always be in our hearts.

Debbie Barlow February 9, 1954 – January 10, 2019 Debbie Barlow (nee Unilowsky) passed away on January 10, 2019 at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital after a long, courageous fight with multiple myeloma. Debbie was born in Trail, BC but raised in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Here she met her husband Roger Barlow and started a family. In 1981, the family moved to Fruitvale, BC where they started an upholstery and cabinet-making business together. They later opened a nursery, Beaver Creek Greenhouses. In 1987, Debbie followed her childhood dream of becoming a nurse. She had found her calling, and Debbie’s compassion and devotion to her patients touched the lives of so many people during her career, first as an RN on Second Medical at the Trail Hospital and then as a psychiatric nurse at Daly Pavilion and Harbour House in Trail. Debbie loved spending time with her family, was an excellent cook, an accomplished artist & loved to garden.

She was quick to share the bounties of her life, be it her garden, her time, or her love. Debbie will always be in our hearts and will continue to guide us all with her generous, compassionate example. Debbie is survived by her husband Roger; daughter Sara (Nick) Howald; son Christopher (Jodi) Barlow; her five grandchildren: McKenna, Christian, Hannah, Max and Rowan; her sister Carol Brothen; nieces Christine, Sheryl, and Tamara; and nephews Terry and Jason. Debbie was pre-deceased by her mother Frances Unilowsky and her sister Beverly Roy. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 6 at 11.00 am at Gateway Christian Life Centre, 8320 Hwy 3B, Trail, BC. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Scotland, Dr. Stone, Dr. Stanley, NP Lori Verigin, and all the staff at the KBRH Oncology Department for their attentive and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Debbie’s name to the Oncology Department via the KBRH Health Foundation. Selkirk College is taking part in the BC Cool Campus Challenge, a province wide initiative to reduce natural gas use this heating season. Post-secondary institutions across the province are challenging each other to reduce natural gas use and encouraging campus community members to commit to take energy conservation actions by signing the BC Cool Campus Pledge. Institutions currently participating include: University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Selkirk College, University of Victoria and Thompson Rivers University. Public institutions have taken this opportunity to be community leaders and start a conversation on energy dependency and resiliency. “This challenge is an example of how collaboration can address concerns about energy use,” says Selkirk College Sustainability Coordinator Laura Nessman. “Natural gas is 2019 FACILITIES a limited non-renewable resource. Darkwoods Conservation Area to grow A large tract of protected lands stretches between Nelson and Creston, including areas managed by the Province of British Columbia and the Darkwoods Conservation Area, owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). Yet one area within Darkwoods – the Next Creek watershed – remains unprotected. This is about to change, as NCC is one step closer to purchasing the land with $650,000 in support from Columbia Basin Trust. Once the purchase of the Next Creek area is complete, it will increase the overall size of Darkwoods by 14%, to nearly 630 square kilometres. Combined with the other protected lands between Nelson and Creston, the network of conservation lands and protected areas will total about 1,100 square kilometres. Conserving large tracts of land with a wide variety of connected habitat types is beneficial for wildlife, as well as water quality and has other ecological values. In 2008, the Trust and several other organizations helped NCC purchase the Darkwoods Conservation Area. This was the largest private land acquisition for conservation ever undertaken in Canada and still is. “Securing this land for present and future generations of Basin residents will protect its current ecosystems, help prevent further deterioration and introduce restoration and enhancement,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “This will have significant benefits for many species, including species of concern like whitebark pine, grizzly bear and wolverine.” The Darkwoods expansion project is part of a $25-million initiative to increase NCC’s conservation impact in the Canadian Rockies region. Recently the governments of Canada and BC announced a contribution of $14.65 million to this initiative, which will support the acquisition of the Next Creek area in Darkwoods. NCC is actively fundraising to fulfill its goal and complete the expansion of Darkwoods. “Conserving the Next Creek watershed and expanding Darkwoods represents the fulfillment of a conservation vision that started over a decade ago,” said Nancy Newhouse, BC Regional Vice President, Nature Conservancy of Canada. “We are grateful for the continued support of Columbia Basin Trust.
