Organics workshop food for thought After hosting a workshop in mid February, the RDCK is asking municipal councils and boards if they intend to participate in a proposed regional-scale composting program slated to start by 2022. “Organic waste diversion is a key component of our Resource Recovery Plan update, which will dictate our operations and capital work for the next five-plus years,” said Uli Wolf, general manager of environmental services at the RDCK. “A regional-scale composting system would provide numerous environmental and economic benefits for our entire region, and those benefits are best realized if all the municipalities are on board.” Workshop attendees were given an update on the development and cost estimates of various composting options. They were also given an overview of the benefits of organics diversion programs: they help conserve landfill space, reduce leachate and greenhouse gas emissions, and produce a useful product in the form of compost. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is actively pursuing opportunities for implementation of food waste organics composting for communities in the eastern portion of the region, including potentially partnering with the RDCK on their initiative. For more information about the RDCK’s Resource Recovery Plan Update, visit https://rdck.ca/EN/main/ services/waste-recycling/resource_recovery_plan.html, or contact the RDCK Resource Recovery Department at 250-352-8161 (1-800-268-7325) or ResourceRecovery@ rdck.bc.ca.

Advice from TickTalk Canada Ticks, which can transmit illnesses such as Lyme disease, can now be found in many areas throughout Canada. Yet, despite an increase in public awareness, many people don’t know one very important fact about ticks: they don’t mind cold weather. Why is March National Tick Awareness Month? Ticks are looking for a blood meal when outdoor temperatures reach 4ºC. In many parts of Canada, this can occur very early in the spring or even on warmer days during traditionally cold months – well before many pet owners have even started to think about parasite control. There’s no denying the fact that concern about ticks is growing. People are finding more ticks on their pets – and themselves. Reported cases of Lyme disease are more frequent. Ticks are a hot topic around the dog park, in the news, and on social media. Waiting for the arrival of warm weather before initiating parasite protection leaves pets vulnerable to ticks. Since the best time to start protecting pets against ticks is before exposure, March is the ideal time for National Tick Awareness Month. Where can I find the National Tick Awareness Month educational resources? New in 2019, the www.TickTalkCanada. com website has been created to provide pet owners with a credible online resource to find out more about ticks, and to encourage pet owners to continue the tick control conversation with their veterinarian. This website shares tick facts, a video series addressing 12 common questions regarding ticks in Canada, and links to other resources for additional information. Together, veterinary teams and pet owners can partner to insure pets are protected from ticks and the diseases they carry. Canadian Animal Health Institute

Nisga’a poet presents at Reconciliation Speaker Series Selkirk College’s Indigenous Services Department and the Mir Centre for Peace are proud to present Nisga’a author Jordan Abel, speaking at Selkirk College Castlegar Campus on March 16. Abel will explore what it means to be Indigenous, what it means to be an intergenerational survivor of residential schools, and what it looks like to be at the intersection of creative writing, digital humanities, and indigenous studies. “It’s important that we understand the violence that colonization has done through language, and even to language,” says Jennie Barron, chair of the Mir Centre for Peace. “Jordan’s work illustrates the power of language to frame and justify harmful actions and ideologies, but also to challenge and ultimately transform our perceptions in a good way.” cont’d on pg 28

Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment? Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail to submit bid for 2021 RBC Cup The Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail are working collectively to submit a bid to Hockey Canada in hopes of hosting the 2021 National Junior A Championship at the Trail Memorial Centre in May 2021. Bid submissions from all eligible host teams and committees are due by April 30, 2019. Hockey Canada will then review the submitted bids and make their decision in June 2019.

“Hosting the RBC Cup in 2021 would be a great opportunity for our community,” said Craig Clare, Director of Hockey & Business Operations for the Trail Smoke Eaters. “Right now, we are focusing on the bid document and gathering all the information that is required in order to be considered. We feel our team and community have so much to offer a tournament of this caliber, but it’s Hockey Canada’s decision as to which team and city are most suitable to host the event.” The Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail have designated staff members working diligently on the bid’s contents and have retained a local graphic designer to professionally design and format the document. “There are many financial and operational requirements that must be included in the bid,” said David Perehudoff, Chief Administrative Officer. “The goal is to invest the time and resources required to compile a thorough and professional document that will hopefully result in a positive outcome for Trail. Once the bid has been submitted, we will anxiously wait for Hockey Canada’s review of the bids received, and their decision.” For more information, contact: Craig Clare, Trail Smoke Eaters Director of Hockey & Business Operations 250-231-3835 c.clare@trailsmokeeaters.com or David Perehudoff, City of Trail Chief Administrativ Officer 250-364-0805 dperehudoff@trail.ca

The awe that mountainous landscapes evoke is universal, yet most seldom venture into true wilderness. Martina and her 60 year-old mother Tania embark on a six-month trek

through the treacherous Coast Mountains of British Columbia, in a journey that has never before been completed by a duo. Their adventure is interspersed with beautifully crafted

portraits of high-altitude human endurance and passion – an avalanche survivor, a snowshoe artist, a snowbound convent – that are by turns captivating and inspiring.

On Saturday, February 23 the streets of Nelson filled up with walkers, volunteers and donors. They braved the cold slippery conditions to come out and support the vital work of Nelson CARES Society: its Ready for Home program. Teams were made up of schools, community groups, businesses, friends and families. Thank you to everyone who took part. We couldn’t do this event without countless volunteer hours, donations and generous support from the community. Thank you to the business community for supporting this event with our ‘toques around town’ program, and for the ingredients for the amazing chili. This is the second year that we partnered with the Commercial Kitchen Assistant program students at Selkirk College to make the chili and this has been a wonderful and yummy partnership. We also received numerous donations to create our gift packs for the biggest team (Wildflower School Walkers), the best fundraising team (Erica’s Avengers), and the best fundraising individual (Debbie House). Our total raised so far is $40,260. This is 115% of our $35,000 goal. Nationally we are 49 out of 133 teams. We beat out locations that are much bigger than us, locations like Winnipeg, Kelowna, and Montreal downtown! The website (cnoy.org/nelson) will remain open til March 31st to take donations to teams or individual walkers. If you want to donate by cheque please contact Stephanie Myers and she will help you with this. Let’s see how high we can get that total! “Coldest Night of the Year is an opportunity to experience a few hours of discomfort, where many in our community endure for years. Homelessness can erode our dignity individually and as a community. On Saturday we showed Canada that we are ready to support the most vulnerable in our community. We are so grateful to the community of Nelson for your amazing generosity. The funds will go directly to support our Ready for Home program that supports those who have been homeless or at risk of homelessness to keep and maintain their housing” Jenny Robinson - Executive Director of Nelson CARES Please contact the Coldest Night of the Year coordinator Stephanie Myers: cnoy@nelsoncares.ca, Cell 250.505.7410

Registration is now open for artists and potential vend ues on the Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT), a celk ebration of culture taking place August 10 & 11, 2019. Help us make the 11th anniversary tour the best yet! The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general public. “Arts” includes visual, written, performing, media and inter-arts! Participating as a venue allows you to really connect with locals, develop a wider audience, edug cate the public about what you do, market your activities, d and attract visitors to your community. The CBCT lets visitors visit artists’ studios that may not regularly be open to the public, purchase work directly from artists, and visit galleries, museums and cultural centres to view special displays, archives, demonstrations r or performances. It is also a chance for them to meet the people behind the scenes that are such a vital part of our local culture. Full colour tour directories will be available free of r charge to the public as a guide to visit your location. Signage, posters and postcards are provided to promote your participation. Display ads and media coverage widely promote the event, and your web page profile will remain t for the rest of the year to list your contact info and busiu ness hours outside of the event. Final registration deadline is April 15, 2019 but if you register by March 31 you will save $10! The fee is $60 for registration between April 1-April 15. Participating individuals and venues must be located in the Canadian Columbia Basin, the southeast corner r of British Columbia roughly bordered by the communities of Valemount, Golden, Elkford, Creston, Rossland, Arrow Lakes and Revelstoke. An award-winning poet, Abel has been described as “one of the most exciting young writers in Canada.” Abel’s talk is part of Selkirk College’s Reconciliation Speaker Series, a collaboration between the Mir Lecture Series and the college’s Indigenous Services Department.

“We were thrilled to hear the positive feedback from community members about the high calibre of Indigenous speakers that we were able to bring to the area last year,” says Leah Lychowyd, Indigenous Services Liaison. “We are continuing the series this year, in partnership with the Mir Centre for Peace, with bringing more incredible wisdom to our communities to demonstrate the resilience of Indigenous peoples despite the ongoing system of colonization.” Tickets for the event on Saturday, March 16 will be available at the door ($15 for adults and $10 for seniors/ students). The talk starts at 7 pm in Sentinel 113.

‘The Tablets’ exhibition in Nelson With an international reputation for large scale sculpture spanning more than four decades, Douglas Bentham’s The Tablet represents the Saskatoon-based sculptor’s first full-fledged gallery installation. The Tablets presents a collection of metal assemblages of richly textured bronze and brass panels constructed from an array of salvaged materials; an homage to memory and monumentality, language and culture. The exhibition runs through May 26 at Touchstones Nelson. The works are loaned by the Art Gallery of Swift Current on behalf of Mr. John Mann. School District concerning measles Parents and guardians concerned about the recent measles outbreak in Vancouver can be assured that the ministries of education and health are working together to mitigate the risk of the measles outbreak to our school communities. A message was issued from the ministry to all school districts in the province indicating that over the coming weeks the ministry will communicate actions that will be taken with schools across the province to reduce risk, such as updating immunization records for measles and offering catch-up immunization for students. The Kootenay Lake School District has been in contact with our local public health office and we were provided with the following details: As of March 1, there are no confirmed cases of measles in the Kootenay Boundary or Interior Health regions. Immunization - The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against measles is to get vaccinated and ensure vaccinations are up to date.

• Two doses of MMR vaccine offers the best protection against measles. MMR vaccine is highly effective and safe. • Contact your local IH public health unit if you are unsure about your immunization status or to book an appointment to be immunized. Karen has filled our lives with a lifetime of treasured memories and will be forever loved and appreciated. The family would like to express their appreciation for the professionalism of Beasley Fire Hall’s First Responders, BC Ambulance, and medical staff at Kootenay Lake and Kelowna hospitals. Protect your vehicle investment

Vehicle owners know maintaining a vehicle can be a lot of work. Taking the time to properly care for a vehicle can prolong its life expectancy and help owners avoid breakdowns and other issues along the way. Regular washing is an aspect of vehicle maintenance that some may classify as a purely cosmetic benefit. Certainly a car wash can keep the vehicle looking its best, but there are other advantages to washing as well. Washing offers preventative maintenance for the car’s paint and can help prevent rust and corrosion resulting from dirt, acid rain and road salt. Rust can compromise hydraulic brake and fuel lines, as well as many moving parts in the chassis and frame. Corrosion of electrical connectors and other parts under the hood can lead to leaks, electrical shorts and a host of additional problems. If you live in an area with a high amount of dust or industry, you may need to wash your car as frequently as once a week. Drivers who live along or near coastal areas may need to wash their vehicles frequently to combat sea salt buildup. Garage-kept vehicles may be able to go longer between washes, but in general washing a vehicle every two to three weeks is a good rule of thumb. In adcont’d on pg 35

Vehicle Investment cont’d from pg 32 dition, a good sealant will protect the paint and other trims throughout the year. The following are some other car-wash tips to follow. • Always use a proper washing soap solution. This will preserve the car’s finish better than other homemade soaps. Avoid using dishwashing liquid, which can strip protective wax coatings. • Be prompt when cleaning off bugs, sap and bird droppings that may stick to the paint and become difficult to remove over time. • Wait until a car has cooled down before washing. Heat speeds up the drying of soap and water and can make it more difficult to clean. • Always use a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Resist the urge to

move the sponge in circles as you clean. Doing so can create noticeable swirl scratch marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the body panels and hood. • Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is not mixed into the clean, sudsy water. • Consumer Reports suggests using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body of the car after washing and rinsing. Blot up any extra water with a chamois. • Wax the car every season to ensure it has maximum protection. In between, apply a liquid spray wax to touch up spots. Water beading is not an ideal indicator of whether or not the car needs a coat of wax. • Don’t forget to pay attention to the interior. Vacuum regularly to prevent ground-in dirt and routinely clean the upholstery with a product specific to your vehicle’s interior, whether that interior is leather or fabric.
