Hon. Faith Johnson
Word on the street circulated for weeks about former judge Faith Johnson being a finalist to succeed former Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk, who resigned due to medical reasons. After several months of speculation, inuendoes, threats of lawsuits and public attacks Dallas County finally has a new District Attorney. On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the appointment of Faith Johnson as the Dallas County District Attorney for a term set to expire December 31, 2018, or until a successor shall be duly elected and qualified. This appointment makes Johnson only the second African American and second woman to hold the post. “Throughout her career, Faith has proven herself a dedicated public servant, most notably as a criminal prosecutor where she attained the status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office,” said Governor Abbott. “As a former prosecutor, district judge, and while serving on the Department of Public Safety Commission, Faith has shown a commitment to law enforcement and the rule of law. She has devoted herself to defending some of our most vulnerable Texans, and I am confident that in her new role as District Attorney, Faith will continue to fight for the people of Dallas County and ensure that justice is served.”

District attorney named,
Attorney's office and exact due process of the law in a fair and unbiased method! That is always a win for Dallas County and ultimately for Texas!" – T.D. Jakes, Bishop, The Potter’s House Johnson has the distinction of not only being the first African-American female district criminal judge elected in Texas, where she served as the presiding judge for 17 years, but also being the first African-American female to attain the highly regarded status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. She has handled thousands of felony cases ranging from drug possession and theft to sexual assault, child abuse, and capital murder. After leaving the bench, Ms. Johnson practiced with a non-profit law firm for two years before establishing Faith Johnson & Associates, L.L.P. in 2009. Ms. Johnson is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, J.L. Turner Legal Association, Committee for a Qualified Judiciary, Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Christian Chamber of Commerce, among other professional organizations. She is secretary and a board member of The Potter’s House of Dallas, and a past board member of several non-profit organizations. In 2014, Ms. Johnson was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to the Texas Public Safety Commission, where she is one of five Commissioners who oversee homeland security, border patrol, and terrorism in Texas.

(S.M. Wright Parkway), Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Good Latimer Expressway. These changes would convert the existing freeway-to-freeway connections between I-45 and SH 310 to a diamond-type interchange involving two crossstreets: Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (MLK) and Al Lipscomb Way (formerly Grand Ave.). The proposed improvements will extend SH 310 to connect exclusively to Cesar Chavez Boulevard. The existing SH 310 underpass at MLK would be converted to an at-grade, signalized intersection. The existing I-45 frontage roads would be extended to MLK, and the existing ramps connecting MLK and I-45 would be relocated to the proposed signalized intersections of the proposed frontage roads and MLK. A northbound exit ramp to Al Lipscomb Way from I-45 as well as a southbound entrance ramp from Al Lipscomb Way to I-45 would also be constructed. Pedestrian and bicycle improvements would be constructed along SH 310 to create a continuous network between SH 310, MLK, Al Lipscomb Way and Good Latimer Expressway. The existing right of way (ROW) width along SH 310 is typically 220 to 240 feet, but widens to 360 feet north of MLK. The existing ROW width along I-45 varies from 240 to 500 feet. Approximately 1.7 acres of additional ROW along both sides of I-45 would be necessary for the proposed project. The proposed project would displace one former fire station and two commercial businesses. The cost is approximately $31.4 million and is expected to start in 2019 with completion by 2022.

Dyson and Columbia University Professor and moderator Fred Harris in a New School-sponsored panel on Obama, Race and Politics. Anyone who has read Dyson or me would not be surprised at our analysis. Fred Harris, too, has written about the Obama presidency in his book, “The Price of the Ticket: Barack Obama and the Rise and Fall of Black Politics (Oxford University Press, 2012). Professor Woodly’s analysis stood out for me, though, because she talked about com-
munity distrust and ways it disconnects people from politics, the polls, and outcomes. Too many people thought that their actions had no consequences, and that whatever they did had no meaning. Their impressions may have been shaped by the smugness many of us saw coming from the Clinton campaign that behaved as if their victory was inevitable. Just 107,000 votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania separated Hillary Clinton from victory. Recounts are not likely to sway the election, and the “if I coulda, woulda, shoulda post-mortem around the resources that should have been used to energize the base makes no difference now. The election is over. Recounts are important for the sake of accountability, but I’m not sure they will make a difference in the electoral outcome. I support the recounts, and also an electoral audit. I support reform that makes it easier, not harder for people to vote. I believe that there are things that can be done in the next two years to take our democracy back. I refuse to wring my hands and dry my eyes about Mr. Trump and his “victory anymore. HALL: While on Others Thou Art Calling!
Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall If you have roots in the African American church or its musical litany, the tag line to this shessay (short essay), is obvious. But just in case you’re Afro-Centrically challenged, let me tether the tag to this thesis or treatise. In the old Black church, amidst the rhythmic foot-pats on wooden floors and pianos that usually needed tuning; “Do not pass me by” was a very familiar hymn. “Pass me not, oh gentle Savior, Hear my humble cry. While on others Thou are calling; Do not pass me by.” Many in the Black ecumenical community believe that President Barack Obama should “pardon” Dr. Jeremiah Wright (Daddy J) before he leaves the house that will be “Whiter” and less congenial under President-reject Donald Trump. Our POTUS is wisely providing clemency for prisoners who have languished in prisons under the age of mass incarceration. But I and others want him to prominently and publicly embrace his former pas-

Courageous Black preachers, White Abolitionists of the Methodism, down to Jeremiah Wright are ministers who made a difference have been loud and proud of the liberating theology they’ve been licensed and ordained to proclaim. There will be detractors who argue that to reunite with Daddy J would blemish President Obama’s legacy. These same scary Negroes were silently complicit as the GOP demolished Wright’s reputation. I would conjecture that Barack Hussein Obama, without the vision and vigilance of a Jeremiah Wright, is a just a tall, lanky professional Black man with a funny name and big ears. Eight years of total disrespect have proven that some White folks and especially the Trump “Deplorables” will never approve of Obama…regardless. Most political practitioners understood the rationale of Obama’s swift offload of Wright and the benefits it accrued. But now, and with all due respect to my brother and my President, I would ask that while you are calling on others to pardon, do not pass Daddy J by. If Mitt Romney and Donald Trump can share a candlelit, televised repast, you can certainly advance this act of comity and Christianity. Vincent Hall is an author, acivist and award winning columnist.

Last week, I was watching some NBA games on TNT and one of the game’s announcers was famed broadcaster Marv Albert. He is considered by many to be one of the top announcers in all of sports history. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015. Some refer to him as “The Voice of Basketball. He is the same broadcaster that was accused of forcible sodomy and pled guilty to a lesser charge of misdemeanor assault and battery in 1997. Albert was given a 12-month suspended sentence. NBC subsequently fired Albert only to bring him back on the air after less than two years. For a more detailed summary of the Albert issue, click on this link. Now juxtapose Albert’s situation with the case of legendary civil rights activist, TV star, comedian extraordinaire, and incomparable philanthropist, Bill Cosby. Several women have come forward to accuse Cosby of drugging and raping them, but these accusers have provided no evidence to backup their allegations. Yet, Cosby is treated as a convicted felon not only in the court of public opinion, but also by most of his business partners, like NBC. It seems now that women have declared a war on men, especially feminists like media chasing attorney, Gloria Allred. She is behind the women who implicated Albert and accused Cosby. She was also behind similar attempts to destroy former presidential candidate Herman Cain, golfer Tiger Woods and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to name a few. Allred seems to have this insatiable obsession with bringing down Black celebrities, with Cosby being the most notable one, but that will be the focus of a future column. Albert’s then employer, NBC, stood by him simply because he pled not guilty when the charges were announced back in 1997. According to NBC, “This past May, when
charges against Marv Albert became public, Mr. Albert asserted his innocence and assured NBC senior management that there was no basis whatsoever to the charges. Today, given Marv Albert’s plea of guilty to assault and battery, NBC terminated its relationship with Mr. Albert.” Now, this is the same NBC that cancelled Cosby’s new show that was supposed to air in 2014, right when these women all came forward with baseless charges. Cosby publically stated that there was no substance to these charges; unlike in the Albert case, NBC refused to stand by Cosby and give him the benefit of the doubt. I will leave it to my readers to make their own conclusions, as to why there seems to be a double standard between how Albert was treated vis-à-vis Bill Cosby. Both are males, Albert is 75 years of age and Cosby is 79 years of age, one is White and one is Black, and one of them cost NBC money and the other one generated money for the media company. Albert cost NBC money, because he was a paid employee, but Cosby made NBC money because he was a partner with them. So, they stood by the employee, who cost them money and rejected the partner who made them money. Can someone explain that to me? So, it’s been about two years since NBC cancelled Cosby’s show. The same amount of time that Albert was made to sit on the sidelines after pleading guilty to a crime against a woman, even though others came forward and accused him of similar crimes. So, can we now expect NBC to reengage with Cosby about the timeline for bringing his new show on the air? Mind you that Cosby has never been convicted of anything. I am sure that NBC stands for “Nothing But Consistency.” I am sure that NBC’s seeming double standard has nothing to do with race, especially when one actually admitted to wrongdoing and the other has consistently denied wrongdoing. What’s even more amazing is that the very year Albert was charged with a sex crime (1997), he was inducted into the basketball
hall of fame and has subsequently received similar types of awards since. A few months ago, Albert received a new contract from TNT, his current employer. Again, juxtapose that with the treatment of Cosby. Without being convicted of anything, NBC cancelled his new show before it aired on TV, Spellman University returned Cosby’s $ 20 million gift, and several schools rescinded honorary degrees given to him. Am I the only one who is noticing this double standard? One person was convicted in a court of law of a sex crime, but
7
pleaded down to a lesser charge and was rewarded with new contracts, lifetime achievement awards, and given the good housekeeping seal of approval by corporate America. The other person has been convicted of nothing and his whole life’s work and reputation has been stripped from him. In my best Fat Albert voice, “Hey, hey, hey, I got something to say.” How can a man who has done so much good for so many people for so long not be treated better than a convicted woman abuser? This is truly America in Black and White and there is nothing funny about it.

What’s Really Going on with Mr. West?
Ask Alma: by Alma Gill
Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma.
Dear Alma: Alma, I’m wondering what’s going on with Kanye West? Do you think there are some underlying reasons why he’s suffering from ‘exhaustion’ and canceling his shows? I am a huge fan and I made sure to see him anytime he was within 100 miles from where I live. As a super fan, I mean from way back to the “College Dropout” days, I am seriously worried about him and was wondering what your take is? Signed,Missing the Old Kanye Dear Missing Kanye, Funny you should ask this question, as I’ve recently added Kanye to my prayer list. Clearly he has validated for us, money doesn’t buy endless stints of euphoria. Nope, life doesn’t constantly deliver peace of mind, your way every day or relief from unimaginable grief. My heart strongly feels Kanye is suffering from just that — grief. He has yet to settle his soul when it comes to the death of his mother. Maybe he feels responsible, as if he contributed in some way. Con-
templating perhaps that his dream come true, chance of a lifetime, provided payment for his mother’s procedure. His actions, his pain, leads me to believe he’s trying to pay off a non-refundable loan with his life. My prayer for Kanye to a sister circle of saints, a consecrated collection of comforters who will — call on the Name, guiding him back to his roots, the place where his mama would go when she needed to hear a word…Can I get a Amen?! If I had the chance, I’d say to Kanye, “Sometimes you need a chitchat, a conversation from somebody who knows you by your ole’ school nickname not your gangster Grammy game.” Along with prayer, he needs professional help, ain’t nothing wrong with that. A professional will guide him out of the hallway of pain and blame, towards a classroom to reconcile, replenish and educate himself on how to live without his loving mother. Understandably, he won’t want to attend this course, but it is undeniably a lesson on heartbreak that he can’t afford to skip. Alma

The mother of legendary criminal justice warrior Joyce Ann Brown, was known to many because she was always at the side of her daughter. 'Madea' was in the courtroom throughout Ms. Brown's trial that led to her wrongful incarceration and through the highly publicized fight for freedom. After 9 years, 5 months and 24 days, Joyce Ann Brown was exonerated and released into the arms of 'Madea'. Those who knew Ms. Brown, knew that family was everything and she never traveled or did anything without getting a time to sit down and hug her mother.

DEMAND YOUR INHERITANCE Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
This column is all about not putting limits on a limitless God. In church, the sermon was all about how we, as finite creatures, do a pretty good job of trying to put the infinite being of God into some way, shape or form that we can understand. The problem with that is we can’t do it. Our brain won’t let us comprehend all knowing, all powerful, everywhere since before time began and after it stops. You see the terms “all,” “before,” and “after,” presuppose there is a limit to time and space and power and understanding and things. It is the way of a finite being which happens to be us. These are human characteristics and it is how we have come to rationalize life. It begins at birth. It ends at death. But does it? Pastor was teaching that as long as we operate that way, we limit what we think we’re able to do. His point and mine is don’t put man’s limits on God’s promises. You see each one of us has an image of ourselves on the inside of who we are and what we can do. It has been shaped by friends and family, situations and circumstances, what we want and what we have. For many of us that image is in direct conflict with what God sees and knows He has placed within us. Let me put it this way. Would you ask a homeless man for $100? Of course not! You wouldn’t ask, be-
cause you wouldn’t believe he had it. So if you do not believe there is greatness in you, dare I say you wouldn’t ask God for it. And there’s the rub. I am now of the opinion, it’s time for all of us to put demands on God. I am not being arrogant or presumptuous. I am trying to be humble, respectful and obedient. God has been saying forever to ask him. As a matter of fact, He says, ask, seek, and knock. In each instance your action is promised a positive reaction. Don’t ask. Don’t get. I’m really talking about mustard seed stuff here. Your faith dictates what you ask for. Do you have enough faith to take the limits off God and to ask Him; to demand from Him the inheritance that is yours as delivered by the finished work of Jesus Christ? I understand this can be tricky stuff. And it’s not easy. We put obstacles in our way when it comes to simply receiving the grace and blessings of God. I’m merely pointing out that we have some say in this. We have a spiritual obligation to not limit God. The solution is to recognize those things we do that are subtle, but devastating to our achieving God’s purpose for us. Fear limits God. If you think the answer will be no, y ou won’t ask. Unbelief limits God. If you don’t believe it’s possible, then all things become impossible. Disobedience limits God. If you disobey, you don’t think you have the right to ask for anything. And comparison limits God. If you feel unworthy and less than those who have more, you’ll accept what you have and nothing more.
How? Why? By negating a willingness to believe that we are truly blessed and highly favored, made in the image of almighty God and destined to be great for Him. You know there is fear of failure and fear of success, both with the same result. I call it, “the do nothing”. It’s comfortable and you can handle that. Who wants to expect everything when the world has taught you that you don’t deserve anything? My proof of what I’m saying is in Matthew 4:11, after the devil tempted Jesus with everything in the world and He refused in the name of God. “The devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” In the name of the devil, Jesus was aware enough to say, no, thank you. And because He knew where His blessings lay, God sent angels to attend Him and in God’s name gave Him everything the devil had promised. Think about that. Are you making any demands on God? He’s just waiting on you to recognize He’s your God, daring you to ask so He can give. Without the question, without the demand, it’s an unfulfilled dream, a mountain too big to move, a desire never met. And this I know. Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the lord, trust in Him and He will do this;” You gotta believe.
May God bless and keep you always.

of the end for apartheid. He celebrated Mandela while the U.S. government was supporting the apartheid government and labeling Mandela a terrorist. In 1959, Castro came to the United Nations in New York City. He chose to stay in the Hotel Teresa in Harlem and met with Malcolm X, acts scorned as a publicity stunt. But in 1959, African Americans couldn’t stay in white hotels across the South. We lived under the American version of apartheid. Neighborhoods across the country were redlined by race. Castro was the first Cuban leader to recognize his country’s large black population, descended from slaves, and to help integrate them into national life. Castro’s embrace of civil rights was an electric message across the black community in the U.S. When I first met Castro in 1984, I found him to be a magnetic personality, a brilliant mind and a proud leader. I was told I couldn’t talk to him about religion. We talked for hours. He told me he had once loved the church and thought of it as a center of ac-
11
WWW.TEXASMETRONEWS.COM tivism and social justice, not just piety. But when he came down out of the mountains after defeating the brutal dictator, he was shocked and heartbroken to find the priests armed and ready to kill to defend the graveyards of the rich. I reminded him of Dr. Martin Luther King and the other theologians of liberation, and Castro came to church with me in Havana. It was the first time Castro had gone to church in 27 years. I had to remind him to take off his hat and put out his cigar. We laughed and settled in for the service. I was told he wouldn’t talk about political prisoners. We talked, and he released 48 prisoners to me. In later years, Castro’s government cooperated with the U.S. in countering terrorism. His health and education systems became the envy of much of the hemisphere. He was hero and mentor to a new generation of populist nationalists across the hemisphere — from Hugo Chavez in Venezuela to Evo Morales in Bolivia. Castro’s legacy is surely mixed. Under constant threat from abroad, he jailed political enemies, suppressed free speech and trampled on rights. Cuba’s economy stagnated, particularly after the
Soviet Union fell apart, but it survived despite being cut off from a major logical trading partner. U.S. enmity helped make Castro a global hero, a symbol of the possibility of independence for developing nations, but it inflicted great costs upon the Cuban people. The U.S. recognized and traded with the Soviet Union, with communist China, with brutal regimes from Saudi Arabia to Pinochet’s Chile, but the embargo against Cuba went on and on. When Barack Obama came to the White House, he discovered that instead of isolating Castro, the embargo was isolating the U.S. in our own hemisphere. After nearly 60 years of a frozen failed policy, the U.S. finally has started small steps toward normal relations. We shouldn’t be naive. Castro was no saint; the Cuban regime was repressive and wrong-headed about many things. But we shouldn’t view Castro solely from the perspective of those who fled the revolution or of the Cold Warriors and covert operators who spent decades trying to bring him down. We won’t understand the perversity of our own policies if we don’t understand why Castro’s leadership is celebrated across

Injuries curtail Mavs Season By Dorothy Gentry Texas Metro News
The Dallas Mavericks – only five years removed from their NBA Championship in 20111 – are 3-15 and record-wise, the worst team in the NBA. And it’s all due to one-word – injuries. The injury-ravaged Mavericks have rolled out at least 12 different starting
lineups in this short period since the season began. And it’s not looking any better. Head Coach Rick Carlisle recently announced that Dirk Nowitzki, the face of the franchise, is “out indefinitely” as he battles an Achilles injury. Nowitzki has played in only five games this season as he continues to undergo rehabilitation for a strained right Achilles. As if adding insult to injury, the team is also now without the services of Seth Curry (right knee strain) who went down in the 4th quarter of Wednesday’s loss at home to San Antonio. Prior to the injury, Curry was on fire with 14 points, 2 rebounds and one steal in the game. Curry. Dirk Nowitzki. J.J. Barea. Devin Harris. Deron Williams. Injuries. J.J. Barea went down midway through the fourth quarter of the Nov. 15th Maverick loss to the Celtics with what was diagnosed as a left calf strain. He has not seen action since then. Harris made his season debut Wednesday against San Antonio after missing the first five weeks of the Mavericks' season because of a preseason injury to his right big toe. He is back in the line-up but is on minutes restriction for a while. This will hurt the Mavs as they may be without him in key stretches of the game. “I’m still working into game shape. It feels
Dirk Nowitzki
good to get back out there and get on the court,” said Harris. “I am just taking it one game at a time. I’m working on getting my minutes up.” Williams returned last week from a left calf strain but is on minutes restriction as well. His presence has been missed, especially toward the end of the past two games – both losses - to San Antonio and Charlotte. Williams, Nowitzki and Barea have been the teams’ leading scorers last year. Andrew Bogut – the team’s star center who was acquired from the Golden State Warriors this summer – has missed a couple of games due to various issues. “It’s a little iffy right now,” Curry said of his injury that has seen him miss two consecutive games so far. “I have to get it looked at. I felt a pop in knee so we will see what is going on with it. Hopefully I can get back out there (on the court) quick. “ With the injuries plaguing the starting line-up, a lot of the minutes and games have been played by rookies and
13
the bench who are fighting hard, gaining valuable playing time and experience, but who are also struggling and unable to get over the hump and produce the needed wins. Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle knows what the team is up against and continues to preach patience in the recovery of the injured players. “We gotta work thru this period. We have to get these guys fully health, up to full speed, playing full minutes and then our chances (of winning) will be much greater,” he said. “It’s hard to generate consistence (in the line-up) with some guys health and some not.” Carlisle called the team’s health struggles “an eclectic situation” with one goal in mind: getting the players healthy. “We have to keep up the fight and if we do that, things will come around.” Said Harris, “We’re still fighting. Our fight is still there. Our guys are playing their butts off and one of these days, our luck is going to change. “If we continue to fight this way, we’ll win some of these games.”
Mavs play home-heavy December schedule MFFL’s (Mavs Fans for Life) and even those who aren’t – have several opportunities to see the Dallas Mavericks play this month as the team plays 8 home games in December.
