Every Day is World AIDS Day!
It was a night to cherish, remembering the wonderful work that began over a quarter of a century ago. On November 2, at the Arlington Sheraton, and so appropriate for National Adoption Month, an anniversary was celebrated. During the program, in addition to sharing information about adoption and hearing an inspiring speech from keynoter and business guru Roland Parrish; there were

Silence is golden but it’s also deadly. We know each month is dedicated to a number of causes and as a new month approaches, folks turn their attention to the next cause the month. But what about those who are dealing with a specific issue or cause? What illness or affliction do you have that is getting attention, really only during a designated time? Are you frustrated that once the “month” is over with folks will forget about you and go about their business? See MY TRUTH, page 14

Prison Reform Now!
From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

overwhelming numbers of ethnic minorities, and poor people. The legislation, passed in the House of Representatives earlier this year, and now being considered in the Senate has the support of a number of senior officials in the Trump administration. President Trump seems inclined to support the measure, known as the First Step Act, which is supported by his daughter and her husband. The law would be a tremendous Christmas gift for inmates in federal institutions who have received overly-harsh prison sentences during the past two decades, and for members of their families, especially children, who have been damaged by their pro-
longed absences. It includes monies for programs designed to end the tragedy of released inmates continuously returning to prison. It also calls for reductions in mandatory minimum sentences for those who have been convicted of non-violent drug offenses. Outside of the Congress, the legislation is being supported by influential organizations and members of the nation’s law enforcement community. The country’s largest policing body; the Fraternal Order of Police is supporting it, as is The American Civil Liberties Union. The First Step Act is an example of significant bi-partisan legislation that
can be a model for other laws that emanate in the 116th Congress that benefit the American people. Mass incarceration has been poisonous in our country which has approximately five percent of the world’s population, but has nearly twenty-five percent of the world’s incarcerated men and women, held in state and federal penal institutions where responsible rehabilitation programs are uncommon and ineffective. Criminologists, psychologists and social workers have concluded that job training programs, adequate housing and healthcare for formally incarcerated people will lessen the likelihood that they will commit crimes, returning them to prison.
In the past two decades our nation has been encumbered by a legislative mindset that mandated that people convicted of crimes should be sentenced to prison, and largely forgotten. That policy has been a disaster for our society, and it is now time to change it. We must do it not only for those men and women who have had their freedom taken away, but for our entire society? Justice, fairness and commonsense demand that we act, and that we act now!

Forbes released an article last year that underscores our mission and our reason for sponsoring KwanzaaFest each year. “One reason the U.S. ranks so poorly globally is that health outcomes for certain racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups fare so poorly domestically. African-Americans, Latinos and the economically disadvantaged experience poorer health care access and lower quality of care than white Americans. And in most measures, that gap is growing. Don’t miss this opportunity to come out and get yourself checked out. Don’t put your health or the health of your family in jeopardy. Criminal Justice Reform Long Overdue for Black America
NNPA SPEAKS By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr.
President and CEO, National Newspaper Publishers Association
As a member of the infamous Wilmington Ten case in North Carolina from 1972 to 2012, I witnessed firsthand why the criminal justice system in the United States needed to be thoroughly reformed. We had been unjustly sentenced in 1972 to a combined total of 282 years in prison for standing up for equal quality education for Black students in the public school system in Wilmington, NC in 1971. For 40 long years, until North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue signed “Pardons of Innocence” documents for each member of the Wilmington Ten, the issues of unjust and disproportionate mass incarceration, bail reform, racism in the judiciary, prosecutorial misconduct, and reentry challenges were not matters of partisanship, but were matters of fundamental civil and human rights. Thanks to the National Newspaper
Publishers Association (NNPA), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the United Church of Christ (UCC), the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARP), Amnesty International and millions of people across the U.S. and throughout the world, we finally received a modicum of justice with the Pardons of Innocence being issued on December 31, 2012. In the wake of the recent 2018 Midterm Elections, there now appears to be a more bipartisan interest and commitment in the achievement of significant criminal justice reform in America. Earlier this year, the House of Representatives finally passed the First Step Act with bipartisan support. The legislation establishes the initial steps for criminal justice reform at the federal level. Just last week, even President Trump announced his support of the First Step Act. However, what the U.S. Senate will do is still an open question. The U.S. Congress should expedite passing the First Step Act as well as other criminal justice reform legislation. For Black America in particular, this remains an urgent and crucial public policy objective. Of the current 2.2 million people incarcerated in the nation’s prisons and jails, a disproportionate num-
ber are African Americans and other people of color. According to a 2018 Pew Research Study, in 2016 African Americans represented 12 percent of the U.S. adult population but 33 percent of the sentenced prison population. The ACLU reports that African American men are six times more likely to be incarcerated as White men in the U.S. According to the NAACP’s Crimi-
nal Justice Fact Sheet, African American women are imprisoned at twice the rate of White women. The Federal Bureau of Prisons reported in 2018 that 38 percent of prison inmates are African American. But we need to do more than merely stating the statistics of criminal justice that bear witness to the racial, social, and economic inequities and injustices. We need solutions. We need more research about the successful programs and projects that can prevent mass incarceration while
we emphasize the urgency for criminal justice reform legislation at both the federal and state levels. We also need more effective programs for the hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people preparing to reenter society without the counterproductivity of recidivism. I have served on panel discussions amicably with Mark Holden, general counsel of Koch Industries, who also supports the First Step Act, a bill grounded in evidence-based and data-driven practices that we know keep communities safe and provide people with the second chances they need to lead productive lives. The bill specifically provides programs to help reduce the risk that prisoners will recidivate upon release from prison. Mark and I are on the same page on the issues of reentry and the need to reduce systemic reincarceration. In fact, Koch Industries has been funding criminal justice reform efforts for more than a decade and was one of the first major corporations in the U.S. to “ban the box” by removing questions about criminal history on its employment applications. Other corporate leaders should also “ban the box.” Earlier this year at the NNPA’s Mid-Winter Conference, we were pleased to welcome Brother Lamont Carey, a former prison inmate, noted
5
author and founder of Contact Visits, a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization that he established to assist people preparing to reenter society from prison. It was reassuring to see how Lamont was able to break free of the stigma of incarceration and make a positive and productive contribution to help others transform their lives, families and communities. Lastly, on the related issue of bail reform: There are nearly a half million people, most of whom are people of color, who are sitting in jail today only because they cannot afford to post a monetary bail. Google and Koch have also teamed up to raise awareness about the necessity for bail reform in America. They believe that individuals accused of a crime should not be required to provide bail unless deemed a threat to public safety or a flight risk, because freedom should not hinge on a person’s financial worth. The time is now for action, not more partisan debate. No more postponements. No more excuses. The U.S. Congress should pass the First Step Act. We want equal justice. Criminal justice reform for Black America is long overdue. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and can be reached at dr.bchavis@nnpa.org
Waters on the 2018 Midterm Election Results
Congress Speaks By Rep. Maxine Waters
With a Democratic majority in the House, and a mandate from the American public, the Financial Services Committee will get to work making sure the financial system is fair for all Americans.
As the senior Democrat on the Financial Services Committee, I would be honored to lead the Committee next year with the support of my Democratic colleagues. If I am selected by my colleagues to serve as Chair of the Committee, I will prioritize protecting consumers and investors from abusive financial practices, making sure that there are strong safeguards in place to prevent another financial crisis, expanding and supporting affordable housing opportunities and tackling the homelessness crisis, encouraging responsible innovation in financial technolo-
gy, promoting diversity and inclusion in the financial services sector, and ensuring that hardworking Americans and small businesses have fair access to the financial system and opportunities to thrive. For the last two years, Republicans in Congress have served as accomplices to Trump and have completely neglected Congress’ oversight responsibilities, enabling corruption and destructive policies to run rampant. It is critical that we bring account-
ability to the Trump Administration and the regulatory agencies under the Committee’s jurisdiction. That includes ensuring that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau can be allowed to resume its essential role of protecting consumers from harmful practices without interference from the Trump Administration. I believe in hearing a range of views on the issues facing the Committee, which are complex and consequential for all Americans.
I will continue to maintain an open door policy, to hear the perspectives and concerns of all stakeholders, including representatives of the financial services industry, as well as groups that represent America’s consumers and investors. And, I will continue to work both with my Democratic colleagues and my colleagues across the aisle on commonsense solutions that benefit hardworking Americans and strengthen our economy. “AMERICAN SEDUCTION” Sex, Money, Power
MILES’ MUSINGS By Miles Jaye The story of seduction is as old as mankind. The Bible offers many instances of and warnings against temptation and seduction. In Genesis 3:6, it says Eve found the forbidden tree “pleasant to the eyes” and “she took of it and ate.” She was seduced! Ephesians 6:11 says: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” Powerful men, men in high places throughout history would have done well to have heeded these words of wisdom. When Ancient Greek play-write Euripides, author of “Medea,” wrote in his play “Orestes:” “When one with honeyed words but evil mind, persuades the mob, great woes befall the state.” he could have easily been speaking of modern day America. Typically, when one thinks of the term “seduction,” salacious notions
of secret rendezvous in dark secluded places, naughty night-time escapades between forbidden lovers in dimly lit restaurants, or hotel rooms just outside of town come to mind. Someone has given in to temptation and answered the call of their base, primal instincts. The most simplistic definition of the term “seduce” is to entice someone into a sexual encounter, but consider its other implications, to lure, attract or persuade, and it becomes easier to spot in action. A fragrance can seduce, a song can be seductive, salesmen and politicians often employ charisma and rhetoric to seduce and persuade. Perhaps the reason the Bible is so cautionary when it comes to seduction is because it typically leads the seduced down a path of compromised principles and into a place of regret. Imagine the regret, embarrassment and shame of the high ranking military officers and government officials who found themselves on the receiving end of soft whispered promises, seduced by Mata Hari or Josephine Baker-- just two of history’s most infamous female spies. Think of all the influential figures today who’ve lost their way, in intoxicated pursuits of wealth, power and privilege, and of course, sex.
Marilyn Monroe was mistress to both President Kennedy and his brother Attorney General Bobby Kennedy. Monica Lewinski was the more recent femme fatale, the Jessica Rabbit of Bill Clinton’s downfall. President Trump and Rudy Giuliani are both known for their high-profile philandering. As of this writing, former Presidential campaign chief, Paul Manafort, was found guilty on 8 out of 18 charges
man Duncan Hunter was indicted for campaign fund violations. Powerful men, lost in lust for sex, money and power—seduced! Josephine Baker, best remembered for her risqué stage performances, her contributions to the French Resistance and later to the American Civil Rights movement, reminds me that Omarosa is not the first Black female seductress to masterfully deploy her cunning, guile, sly smile and cleavage to win over her opponents and score her objectives, but it goes further than that. In reading Trump’s tweet assaults on African Americans from Maxine Waters and Don Lemon to LeBron James, it becomes clear that he JOSEPHINE BAKER MATA HARI assumes Blacks lack intelagainst him, former Trump attorney, lectual prowess, thus giving Omarosa Michael Cohen, pled guilty on multiple a decided advantage. Consider their public displays of affection. He delivered her the White House, but she was unable to deliver Black votes and approval ratings. Fired, jilted and scorned, she now delivers tapes, interviews, promises of testimony to Special Prosecutor Mueller and her kiss-and-tell new book, “Unhinged!” The problem with seduction is that it’s pretty poison. It has the power to bring out the worst in the best among us. Lawyers, judges, teachers, preachers and politicians are all susceptible to the power of seduction. So, the next time you see two cars pull up side by side in a parking lot and one person emerges and quickly enters the other car and they take off leaving one car behind, it’s probably a rendezvous, someone has been seduced and more than likely, it will not end well. Creed II In CREED 2 Sylvester Stallone hands the Creed franchise over to Michael B. Jordan, with “Rocky” stepping out of the spotlight and young “Adonis Creed” taking over the reins. Creed, Michael B. Jordan, is now the champ, with a full-fledged family (a new fiance, his mother, and a newborn baby); and his “Unc” (Stallone) in a supporting role as his mentor and trainer. Phylicia Rashad is Creed’s mom and she brings back her Clare Huxtable portrayal as the mom. Her character is a very opinionated and sassy woman, but she is also very loving too. Teresa Thompson plays Bianca,
Adonis’ soul singer fiance. And a newborn baby adds to Creed’s reasons to fight.
Along with the pressure of being the son of the former heavyweight champ, A p o l l o Creed he has a lot of weight on his shoulders. His rival in CREED 2 is the son of the fighter who killed his father in the ring, Vikter Drago. Young Drago is played by Florian Munteanu, a fitness model who is known for his huge size and towering physique. Ivan Drago (Dolph

Hollywood on the scene
Lungren) is also back and thirty years later he’s still living with the disgrace in Russia of losing to Rocky. Stallone has his hands all in this pie. He’s the producer of CREED 2 and he also gets a writing credit for the film, along with Ryan Coogler (who gets credit for writing for the characters in the movie). Coogler was the successful director of BLACK PANTHER. CREED 2 is rated PG-13 and lasts 2 hours and 10 minutes. It’s a great story that has a little bit of everything. Action, romance, and the boxing scenes will have you cheering and up on your feet. CREED 2 is a hit and I give it my highest rating on my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale.” I give it a JUMBO (with extra butter)!

Woman’s coalition, continued from page 8
Teresa Shook, the so-called founder, says she is demanding resignations. What is she going to do if she doesn’t get them? Shook and Milano are the antitheses of coalition building and intersectionality. In an intersectional world, we come together to work on issues we agree on, in this case, the treatment of women. We decide to disagree on other matters. And sometimes, we agree to walk a mile in another woman’s shoes. Black, white, Latina, Asian, Native, Palestinian and other women have starkly different experiences. We are joined by our gender but separated by the status of the men in our race, and by the differential privilege that some women experience. Miss Ann knew that enslaved women were being raped. She didn’t care. Now the descendants of enslaved women are willing to work with them, not FOR them, but with them. And the descendants of enslaved women have had enough foot-stomping white woman privilege. No more. There will be no women’s coalition if there is no mutual respect. Alyssa Milano and Teresa Shook and the other white
women making foot-stomping demands have shown the hard-working Co-Chairs of the Women’s March a corrosive disrespect. They set the notion of a women’s coalition back decades. But they have also moved us forward because they have reminded us how important it is to consider history and context before we attempt to build a movement. White women, after all, are the mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives of the white men who practice oppression. Those who consider themselves “woke” need to check their sisters who are not. Meanwhile, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez, and Bob Bland need to stand their ground. They built something powerful and beautiful, even though there were fissures beneath the surface. The struggle to dismantle patriarchy, racism, and predatory capitalism continues. Dear Alma, I interviewed for a nursing position at a large hospital in my hometown. The job involves working long hours and I have more than ten years of experience. After I was chosen I received a phone call to come in and sign the offer letter. The Director of Human Relations explained that the vacation time was negotiable. The offer gave me two weeks’ vacation after 90 days, but I asked for three weeks because of my experience. I recently started and when introduced to others, one of the nurses said, oh you’re the one who wants extra vacation. Everyone sorta laughed it off, so I guess she was making a joke. Initially I didn’t understand, but later realized, the director must have been talking about me. I find that to be totally unprofessional. Do you think I should leave the subject alone or bring it to her attention?

Will the outspoken nurse speak on your behalf to the appropriate supervisor? I think not again. So, no, you shouldn’t bring it to her attention, at this point just leave it alone.

You haven’t had time to see who’s large and in charge, who’s lame and insane and who’s just offering a hot cup of common sense. Remind yourself, you’re there to do a miraculous job, not to become best friends with the HR director. I doubt if you’ll run into her often. When you think about it, really, she’s a very small lily pad in a very large pond. Take in your first 90 days learning all that you can about this new facility and being thankful for your amazing opportunity. The nursing profession is filled with unsung heroes. We couldn’t thank you enough for the contributions that nurses and nursing have made to our community. Rawlings presents Dirk Nowitzki with key to City

made (7,201) and blocks (1,263). He has led the Mavericks to 15 NBA playoff appearances, including the franchise's first Finals appearance in 2006 and its only NBA championship in 2011, where he was named Most Valuable Player. He is a 13-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA Team member, the first European player to start in an All-Star Game, and the first European player to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2007. On December 10, 2012, he became the first non-American player to receive the NaismithLegacy Award. He has also received the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award (2016-17) and the Magic Johnson Award (2013-14). “Dallas is so fortunate and proud to have a leader like him in our city,” concluded the Mayor. “He is a class act, a man who consistently puts his teammates, his city and his family before himself.”

“It’s about time” Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki joked recently after receiving the key to the City of Dallas from Mayor Mike Rawlings. "I'm very honored, very humbled. It's been a long great ride here. 20 years representing this city proudly...the franchise, the city, and the fanbase,” Nowitzki said. “Dallas has supported me and took me in from day one. We grew together and I have done everything in my power to give back to this city. Thank you.” Nowitzki was presented with the key, during halftime of the Mavericks game against the Brooklyn Nets, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community and his professional achievements over his 20-year career with the Mavericks. Nowitzki is only the third person to receive a key from Mayor Rawlings since he took office in 2011. Previously receiving keys from Rawlings were golfer Jordan Spieth during his rookie season after winning both the Masters and the U.S. Open. The second went to local preservationist Virginia McAllister. “It's not something I do on a regular basis,” Rawlings explained. “It has to be someone special. It’s got to be someone, really, that is a very, very special person. Sort of one of those things where if they’re great, there’s no debate. [Nowitzki] is that. “Dirk embodies everything Dallas residents should aspire to be. For any sports fan out there, he’s a joy to watch, always striving for excellence and giving 110 percent. But what many don’t fully understand is how diligent, passionate, humble and generous Dirk is, on and off the court.” Nowitzki accepted the key at halftime, joined by the mayor, Dallas City council members and three high school students who assisted in creating a larger ceremonial key specially made for Nowitzki. Nowitzki is one of only seven players to play at least 20 seasons in the NBA and is the only player in NBA history to play 21 seasons with the same franchise. He is the top foreign-born scorer in league history, the only foreign-born player in the NBA’s 30,000-point club,

one of seven players in NBA history to reach 31,000 career points and is seventh on NBA’s all-time points leaders. Among Nowitzki’s notable humanitarian contributions: •Grants made annually to organizations focusing on children’s wellbeing, health and education through The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation – Last year, the Foundation raised $960,000 and held its annualPro Celebrity Tennis Classic raising $1.92 million for Hurricane Harvey victims. His foundation also holds monthly meetings with Hurricane Harvey victims to help families start over and re-enter the workforce. •Hurricane relief efforts – Nowitzki donated to the JJ Barea Foundation to assist Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico. He also helped 10 families who were relocated to Dallas from Houston after Hurricane Harvey. •Annual Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game to benefit various local nonprofits such as Girls Embracing Mothers, Alley’s House, Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts. •Annual visits to patients at Children’s Medical Center. •“Dirk’s Dunkers” – Nowitzki hosts special guests from youth-based nonprofit organizations, underserved
schools and veteran groups in this section of the American Airlines Center. •Seats for Soldiers--Nowitzki, along with his teammates, signs hundreds of autographs while spending time with wounded soldiers from the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and reserve troops from the Dallas-Fort Worth area following the Seats for Soldiers game each fall. In recognition of Nowitzki’s global humanitarian efforts, the World Affairs Council of Dallas/ Fort Worth honored him with the prestigious H. Neil Mallon Award in September 2017. On the court, Nowitzki is the Mavericks’ all-time leader in points (31,187), games played (1,471), starts (1,440), minutes (50,573), rebounds (11,331), defensive rebounds (9,868), field goals made (11,034), 3-pointersmade (1,918), free throws

MY TRUTH, continued from front page
Reminds me of a visit to a shelter one summer. The director told me that summers are rough because people are not in the giving mood. People are not thinking about giving, instead they are vacationing. During the cooler months; drives are held for coats, gloves, heavy clothing, socks, shoes, blankets, etc. But what about the warmer months; when families need, sandals, shorts, lighter clothing, etc.? Where are the donors and donations then? Sometimes we need to let folks know what’s going on so that they can help. Everyone doesn’t have the answers and by sharing information, we can build a better, stronger, more compassionate society. Which brings me to my truth. December 1 is World AIDS Day. For a while folks were really silent about the disease, then there was a period of enlightenment. Now there appears to be a situation where we’re back to emphasizing during that designated month, or a special campaign. It was in the mid 1980s that I met the first person I knew for certain had the AIDS virus. The
young man was in his 30s and he was preparing for his death. Sadly, he was all alone. You see, people were afraid of him. They thought they could catch the virus if he stared at them too long. And God forbid he touched them. Just imagine, living your last days, taking your last breaths and you can’t feel the warmth of a hug from someone you love. Before I said goodbye to the young man, I shook his hand. Now maybe there are those who will say they will never touch me again. And that’s okay. I understand. So did that young man who talked candidly about how he had been ostracized by his family, his friends, and sadly, the Black Church. This man was devastated because the folks who he thought he could depend on actually shunned him when he was diagnosed with HIV. There were no hugs, kisses or handshakes. Not even a dap. No, they would not touch him for fear of catching the virus. Ignorance is not only bliss, it can be downright stupid, especially if you don’t seize the opportunity to be educated. Ignorance about the disease caused fear and mass hysteria.
Butterfly
Even when Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Rae Lewis Thornton talked openly about the disease, and how it could be contracted, folks still refused to address and embrace those afflicted. There is no cure, but you can live with the disease. Just like when it was first diagnosed in 1981, there needs to be more educational efforts about HIV/AIDS, and not just during AIDS Awareness Month or for World AIDS Day programs. I salute those churches that have HIV/AIDS ministries and the organizations that work to serve not only the affected, but their families also. There are people with the virus who get up every day working to make this world a better place. They don’t let their affliction keep them from being productive members of society. What about those who don’t have a disease? There are many who don’t do anything to make this world a better place and aren’t doing anything productive with their lives. We all have a purpose. If we are going to each reach our fullest potential, we must refrain from being pigeonholed. We must wake up every day, addressing the ills and issues of society.
I emerge from this darkness changed. Leaving behind so much of what was me; whole but with missing parts. Pushing myself through a realization that does not include you, physically. Your transformation complete. Mine ... only beginning. La Juana and Patricia Barton

such wonderful community-minded people.” During the last 25 years Rose N. Jones acknowledges there were a few times she felt like giving up for a number of reasons. Whether it was a lack of funding and staff or “the lack of general support from people,” times were hard, but with faith in God she continued to believe in her vision. That vision began while as a college student she became a volunteer house parent for emotionally disturbed and at-risk teenage girls. Two degrees later and after years of experience with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS), she established an agency,(CFI) to make the adoption process less intimidating to potential families, and also specializing in finding homes for hard-to-place children. Twenty-five years later, Ms. Jones celebrated, along with some of the adopted children she placed, including the very first one, and family and friends who helped her start CFI in 1993. “The most moving part of the program, for me,” said Ms. Jones, “was when some of the adopted children that are now older, came up to me and said ‘thank you for finding a family for me. I am with the right family that I love, and I know they love me.’ "When I saw the look in their eyes, I was able to witness that sense of love and securi-

ty that they now have and that to me was a tremendous blessing.” According to Mrs. Jones, the future looks bright because CFI plans to continue providing forever homes for children in need. “We will provide services to prevent child abuse, support families to be better parents and individuals, expand fatherhood programs so that fathers can be a part of parenting and supporting their children; and teach and help the next generation provide quality services for our families to be stronger families, she said.
