MY TRUTH

THE REAL THING

Truth in advertising. It’s simple. I don’t mind paying for what I get, but you need to give me what I pay for. There are more and more restaurants that are passing off a popular fish, Swai, as catfish. That’s a no-no for a number of reasons. First it is unethical. What’s the big deal? Well, if it weren’t a deal, then why are business owners not informing consumers that they are serving

something other than what appears on the menu? Would you not like to be informed if you order chopped beef but the server brings out chopped horse? Some have started referring to Swai as catfish because it is similar. Trust me, it is not the same. Nearly 90% of the catfish (Swai) imported to the U.S. comes from Vietnam, where the use of antibiotics that are banned in the U.S. is widespread, according to consumer reports. Furthermore, the two varieties of Vietnamese catfish sold in the U.S., Swai and Basa, aren’t technically considered catfish by the federal government and therefore aren’t held to the same in-

Dallas Realtists focus on growing Black Wealth The Dallas Association of REALTISTS®, the local chapter of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers® (NAREB), the country’s oldest, minority real estate trade association, is planning a week-long series of events, April 15th – 21st, 2018 in observance of the trade association’s dedication to increasing Black wealth through homeownership and this year, commemorating the landmark passage of the Fair Housing Act 50 years ago. Realtist Week activities in Dallas are grounded in NAREB’s intent to increase the economic futures of Black Americans, by Building Black Wealth through Homeownership. The week-long series of events are designed to reach Dallas Black residents where they, live, work, socialize and worship. In addition, Realtists expect to meet with policymakers and elected officials to ensure that affordable and sustainable homeownership is supported legislatively, through regulatory or other city planning means. Events and activities include:

Break-out sessions include: “The Credit Clinic”, How to get a mortgage, How to Buy a House, “Ask an Attorney” “We are planning and positioning our organization to present programs and events that will encourage individuals to recognize the struggle that took

place many years ago in order for them to vote, have equal rights and become homeowners in the areas they want to live,” said J. Rashad Thomas, Dallas chapter President. “We want to contribute to the NAREB homeownership goal of 2 million homeowners in 5 years. Homeownership for Black Americans has been on a steady decline since 2004 when it reached its peak of nearly 50%. As of the fourth quarter ending 2017 as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Black homeownership rate hovered nationally at 42.1% compared to the non-Hispanic White homeownership rate of just above 72.7%. “Realtist Week events and activities raise awareness that Black homeownership not only strengthens the economic fabric of our city, but also increases the desirability of Dallas’ many neighborhoods,” said Mr. Thomas. It is appropriate that NAREB’s Realtist Week takes place during National Fair Housing Month which commemorates the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968; federal legislation making it illegal to discriminate in housing based upon race, color, sex, national origin, religion, familial status, or disability. Formed in 1947, NAREB’s founding motto of Democracy in Housing continues to serve as its purpose and focus. Today, NAREB’s 2 Million New Black Homeowners in 5 Years (2Mn5) program was initiated to reverse the wealth drain among Black Americans.

While Ms. DeVos and President Trump wanted to slash spending on education, the Congress actually increased the department's budget by approximately $4 billion. As lawmakers we understand the importance of programs that enrich the American experience. As a result we rejected attempts by the administration to eliminate funding for the National Endowment for Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts. We allocated $153 million for each entity. Proposed cuts by the president in the areas of foreign aid, the environment, aid to historically black

colleges and universities and to the State Department were also rebuffed. The president had requested a $6 billion reduction in the budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development run by Dr. Ben Carson. Among the programs he wished to eliminate was one that repaired public housing infrastructure. It would have been devastating if he had gotten his wish. Yet, emboldened and compassionate members of Congress stood up to the president and said no. We then provided our nation with a reasonable and responsible spending program designed to assist our nation and its people. narrator, Walter Cronkite, heralded the horrible news of JFK’s assassination in 1963 when I was a preschooler. I will never forget the phalanx of family and friends filling every corner of my Grandfather’s parsonage. There was crying, moaning and bitter lamenting. April 4, 1968, was different from 1963. This chapter in the American mayhem series put racial anguish on the front burner. The hate that killed Martin unleashed a matching response from the Negro race. A hatred that was arguably justifiable. A white-hot hatred King held in abeyance making him a perfect recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The grainy Black and White television in our rent house on Denley Drive was great for the Vietnam War, but Cronkite’s newscast made King’s slaying grim and gruesome. King’s demise coupled with the hopelessness that followed Kennedy’s assassination had to be particularly difficult for a single divorcee struggling with four children. My mother didn’t just cry. My

Support for HBCUs is critical

THE LAST WORD By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX

Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC) ain’t nothing but the truth. From the time she was elected to Congress in 2014, she was committed to making a difference. One of her early acts was the founding of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, which she Co-Chairs with Alabama Republican Bradley Byrne. She has grown the Caucus to a bipartisan, bicameral group of 74 members, including an array of Democratic Congressional Black Caucus members like Karen Bass (D-CA), Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), GK Butterfield (D-MO), HBCU champion Jim Clyburn (D-SC), former Delta Sigma Theta Sorority President Marcia Fudge (D-OH), and many others. Many of the HBCU members aren’t African American or Democrat but understand the value of HBCUs, like Adams’ fellow North Carolinian Mark Walker (R), Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO), Trent Kelly (R-MS), Jared Polis (DCO), and others. Adams has also attracted 13 Senators, of both parties, to the HBCU Caucus, including Cory Booker (D-NJ), Richard Burr (RNC) Tim Scott (R-SC), Kamala Harris (D-CA), David Perdue (RGA) and others. Alma Adams has done an outstanding job in making the case for HBCUs with her colleagues. I’m not surprised. Adams is a double dipping HBCU graduate, having earned an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University. (She earned her doctorate in Art Education and Multicultural Education from

the Ohio State University). She spent nearly 40 years as a Professor at Bennett College (she was a faculty member when I was President of Bennett), while simultaneously serving on the Greensboro City School Board, the Greensboro City Council, the North Carolina State Senate (and Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus). After she retired from Bennett College, she ran for Congress and prevailed through gerrymandering to be elected to a second term in 2016. Through it all, she has been a champion for HBCUs, using her platform through the North Carolina Legislature to provide scholarship opportunities for students, and infrastructure provisions for campuses. Steele Hall, Bennett’s art gallery, would not be there were it not for Congresswoman Adams’ advocacy and her acumen for collaboration. Now, as a member of Congress, she has assembled a coterie of HBCU advocates to lobby for HBCUs, even as higher education authorization is being considered. Between a breakfast sponsored by Lyft, a lunch sponsored by Intel, and a reception at Google headquarters, three hundred or so people, including members of Congress, HBCU Presidents (I saw FAMU President Larry Robinson and the first woman to lead Bowie State University, Dr. Andrea Hawkins Breaux at lunch), and other stakeholders

challenged themselves to think about ways HBCU can both attract more resources, and prepare themselves for the evolving world economy. While Congresswoman Adams and her team did a tremendous job, it would have been great to also hear from retired educators Bill Harvey (most recently Dean of the School of Education at North Carolina A&T State University) and Char-

lie Nelms (most recently Chancellor at North Carolina Central University), who have written a provocative paper, The Promise and Potential of “Woke” HBCUs. (http://www.southerneducation.org/Resource-Center/ SEF-Blog/SEF-Blog-(1)/February-2018-Black-History-Month/ The -Promise -and-Possibilities-of-Woke%E2%80%9D-HBCUs.aspx). The authors indicate that HBCUs must have a social justice and equality focus and that they must “actively and purposefully combat the insidious effects of racism in society.” They’ve thrown a gauntlet out for HBCUs because too many are so busy replicating the PWI model of higher education that they’ve forgotten part of our

original purpose. HBCUs were founded to educate African American people, but they were also founded to liberate us from the shackles of enslavement and economic disparity. This can be done both by educating professionals – lawyers, doctors, teachers, engineers, and the like, but also by preparing freedom fighters. In recent years, the focus has been more on the former than the latter. Harvey and Nelms suggest that a “woke” HBCU has a curriculum that focuses on Afrocentric education, global education, and community education. While much of the conversation at the luncheon I attended focused on engineering and STEAM (with Oregon Democrat Suzanne Bonamici, STEAM Caucus Co-Chair focusing on the balance that comes when STEM is paired with the arts), one of the more poignant moments was Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell’s plea for financial support for HBCUs as she lamented the projected closing of Selma’s Concordia University at the end of this academic year. Her plea made me wonder why there aren’t more members of the Congressional HBCU Caucus. Every Southern Republican Senator ought to be HBCU advocates. Why? HBCUs are economic drivers for their states. They provide education, gen-

5

erate jobs, and are engines of local economic development. While most African Americans are Democrats, few are indifferent to Republican support of HBCUs that is transformative. Instead, at about the same time that Congresswoman Adams’ luncheon was taking place, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) was forced to take Miseducation Secretary Betsey DeVoid (of good sense) to school for her apparent indifference to the racism that young Black and brown students experience in school. Regardless of political affiliation, everyone who spoke at the Adams/Intel luncheon was clear about the value that HBCUs bring to our nation, even as some made the case that HBCUs must step up with innovation, certificate programs, community college partnerships and more. As Harvey and Nelms point out, there are many ways we can improve HBCUs, but we can’t afford to lose them. Christian Josi, former Executive Director of the American Conservative Union and (gasp!) former Board Member of the Jesse Helms Center is alarmed at the frailty of our HBCUs. Lamenting the closing of Concordia University, he said, “Historically, culturally, morally, we have an obligation to ensure that our HBCUs thrive. If Concordia fails, it is on all of us.” Yet tragically, despite the energy of legislators like Congresswoman Alma Adams, there are too many southern senators who are prepared to turn their backs on HBCUs. Business is business Ask ALMA Dear Alma, I have a friend who knows I am hiring people to fix up my house, and she keeps suggesting that I hire her cousin. I have hired workers in the past and prefer to keep using them. There’s one particular project, however, that she’s really pushing her cousin to do. She visits my home often and she knows I didn’t so much as call her cousin for an estimate. It’s likely his price would be lower, but I’m simply not interested. Things like quality of work, hiring contractors, who show up on time, etc., are more important to me than saving a little money. The people I’ve hired in the past have been licensed, bonded and insured. I don’t know if that’s the case with her cousin; she’s never given me a business card or website. How do I deal with my friend? I don’t want to hurt her feelings, but

this is my house. Happy Homeowner Dear Homeowner, Congratulations on owning your own home. Notice I didn’t address you as a renter, borrower, house sitter or relative needing to crash for a few weeks. You said it in your email—you’re a homeowner; you go, girl! Now, how do you tell a friend you don’t want to use her cousin, her brother, her husband, etc., for home improvements and not hurt her feelings? Let me back up a moment. Don’t you hate that? A friend tells you about that great relative who can get the job done on the cheap. You’re like, “okay, thanks girl,” but then file it way in the back of your memory. Now every time she spots the handyman at your place with a hammer, she brings it up again. And dang, you’re like, “Okay, okay, already, I heard you the first time you mentioned it. If I wanted to use your cousin and pay him with a pack of cigarettes and a six-pack, I woulda told you.” Oh, sorry, that’s my story; let’s get back to you. There’s no easy way to deal with

this. Bottom line, truth be told, business is business. This could be one of many situations—having your car repaired, building a new website, planning a wedding. You are placed in a difficult position when hiring a family member or friend. Deciding to embark on a home improvement project is a huge decision. You definitely should go with a person or company that’s licensed, bonded and insured. What if the job isn’t completed successfully and you can’t get it resolved to your satisfaction? Then, you gotta sue her cousin. You see where I’m going? One more time, to bring this “home” and release you from your guilt: Business is business, friendships are friendships, and it’s best not to blend the two. Stick to the decision you’ve made. If she brings up the subject, cheerfully and lightheartedly remind her that you two are good friends and that you want to remain that way. I’m sure she’ll get the picture. Truly good friends, even when they disagree, understand and respect each other’s decisions. Alma

The real thing

continued from front page

spection rules that other imported catfish are. Well, try telling this to the restaurants that have sold Swai, passing it off as catfish. On the occasion when I have been served Swai, I have immediately let my server know that the fish before me was not catfish. I’ve been served Swai at seafood, Chinese and neighborhood restaurants. Some of my favorite catfish joints, that actually have “catfish” in their name, do not serve catfish anymore because they can hoodwink customers with Swai. Heck, put some hot sauce, ketchup, mustard or tartar sauce on it and who can tell the difference? I can and more and more frequently others are recognizing and sharing their displeasure. To date there’s never been an issue when I whisper my concern. Actually they quietly try to resolve and address my concerns, without bringing attention to our interactions. Swai is native to Southeast Asia—Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia—and sells locally for around $3.99 a pound, according to Tod Marks of Consumer Reports. You’re going to pay as little as $1 to up to $4 a pound more for catfish. Clearly Swai is cheaper. So wouldn’t you think that the savings should be passed on to consumers? Instead you have business owners who have no issue with violating truth in advertising policies, in addition to being deceptive. I was pleased to see that Rocking Crab at 775 W Wheatland Rd, Duncanville, TX 75116, where they have some of the best crabs and special sauce in the Metroplex, has a sign that makes the distinction between the two? That’s right, you know you are getting Swai, and not catfish! Deception is not an admirable trait. Imagine my surprise when I was told by a Joe’s Crab Shack manager that they cook their crabs along with their pork sausage. I asked the manager what do they do when serving Jewish customers. To say they cared would be a gross overstatement. His response was to me, disrespectful. It was also unconscionable as I thought about people of the Jewish and Islamic faith who haven’t a clue about Joe’s Crab Shack’s disgusting practice.

While I won’t begrudge anyone else the pleasure of eating at Joe’s; now that I know what they do in the kitchen, I won’t be eating there anymore and I want to make sure I share what I know and consider to be bad business. With dietary, religious and health restrictions, you have to be careful today. When my brother and I told my mother that we would no longer eat pork, she supported our declaration. She did tell us however, that we had better not forget how we were raised and that if we went to anyone’s home, we were never to question what they put into their pots. Instead of asking if there was pork in those collard greens, we needed to say “no thanks,” and pass. Since we were so adamant about keeping pork out of our bodies, she altered our menus to accommodate us. She went to serving beef and smoked turkey, although she never stopped eating her ham hocks, center cut pork chops and neckbones. And we honored her edict. If we even thought something was seasoned with pork, we politely passed. Then I was hit hard when sitting at the table of someone I was dating and his mom was clearly outdone because all I had on my plate was potato salad, yams, macaroni and cheese and turkey. She called me out, pointing that her son “didn’t eat pork but he eats chitterlings!” I politely responded, “Then he eats pork!” And no, I can’t eat the Jiffy cornbread, because it is made with lard! I felt so uncomfortable and I told myself that day that I refuse to be put in situations where people attempt to make me feel bad because I don’t eat or do things the way they do. Just like my mom would have considered it rude for me to ask about pork, I think it is rude for people to mock others or trivialize their feelings by saying something like, “it won’t hurt you. Just eat a little bit.” Or worse, “Just pick it out.” Unfortunately over the years I have seen pork eaters attempt to deceive non pork eaters. Honesty is the best policy and respect is an admirable trait. I think it is important that in all you do, you do the right thing. I don’t care who you are! www.texasmetronews.com

Deltas celebrate sisterhood

This year’s annual Sisterhood Brunch on March 4, 2018 was the kickoff for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Sisterhood Month of Activities. Held at the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre and included members of the largest sorority for African American women, from chapters across the metroplex. Over 100 Deltas were in attendance at the sold-out event. The guests were beautifully adorned in red and/or gold and definitely projected its theme: “Unapologetic, Unbothered, Unleashed.” The event is the brain child of long-time sorority member Levatta Dean Levels of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter. The morning’s activities started with always-delightful vendor shopping, a beautiful opening prayer, resounding soloist, and a heartfelt welcome from our host. Sisterhood

Month gives Deltas an opportunity to celebrate themselves. Several community sponsors contributed to the wonderful Swag bags and prizes given to the guests who attended the Saturday night dinner and a night of fun, including the “Revoke your Black Card” game of trivia challenge. Deltas both active, and inactive, were encouraged to come and reconnect with the 105-year-old Sisterhood. The hope is that it will rekindle the Sisterhood bond and their commitment to Public Service. Soror Levels and her team are already hard at work on the difficult task of making next year’s event even bigger and better. I, for one, can’t wait! For sponsor, host, or ticket information, or to be added to the mailing list for Sisterhood Brunch 2019, contact Levatta Levels at alllevels@ yahoo.com.

Today’s Not Just Any Day

Spiritually Speaking By James A. Washington

Today is truly a day that the Lord has made and the more complicated the world gets, the simpler the Word of God is to understand. Often, and do I mean often, I get reminded of the power and seductive nature of ego, pride and the need to control. Or, should I say the need to be in control? Letting go and letting God is a simple concept to say and dare I say, an easy concept to understand? Yet why it is so hard to do? We all know people who can quote scripture backwards and forwards yet have no faith. We know Christian control freaks who must have the last say and who must be right all the time. I know I sometimes get caught up in constantly trying to rationalize circumstances in order to explain

the events of the day, any day, as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority. It is more often than not, at these times that if I’m blessed and open to receiving the Holy Spirit, that I then get a chance to see the miracles, the nuances, the essence of my life. I am not in control, never have been, never will be and, it’s okay. Giving your life to Christ requires a constant vigil against taking credit or assessing blame. When you focus on service in the name of the Lord, you really do get a chance to see things from a different perspective. You see the service I’m referring to is the selfless kind that neither seeks nor expects reward. The mere act speaks for itself. How much more simple does it have to be? Christ even suggests that God can see into your heart and know your intention. Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself. It’s so simple, it’s incredible. It’s so simple that if you’re not care-

ful, you’ll miss it altogether. I know I have. Now on this day or, any day, that God has made, let’s take this simple concept and apply it to a very complex world. Behavior should have parameters. Actions should have purpose. We know they have consequences. Intent should always be uppermost in

humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day everyday. It takes will power and you know the will I’m talking about. I believe the calling of every Christian is to try. It’s the effort that God expects. It’s the intent He wants. If you’re first seeking the kingdom of heaven, then that quest should have some direct

See how easy it is from the time you got up until the time you laid down, to succumb to jealousy, pettiness, cruelty, envy and the like? It takes work to be

are saints among us and we ignore them all the time because we’re too busy pursuing the world rather than pursuing God. However, from these living breathing angels, I’ve learned that the battle is not over until you know you’ve already won. The quest is not over until you are born, born again, die and ultimately live forever. There’s a line in a movie that says what we do in life echoes in eternity. It’s kind of nice to know that Jesus already took care of that eternity thing. All I have to do is get through this life thing. If the truth be told, I think I’ve got the easy part. It may not make sense on the surface, but when you stop and think about it, it really is simple. See me. See God. I can do this. I’ve just got to let go, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one person at a time. Try it, just once, try it. And May God then bless and keep you always.

Winnie Mandela, continued from front page

week: “May your life’s struggles, sacrifices and triumphs be remembered. May the footprints you left behind continue to lead us to freedom. I join millions, across this globe, in the extension of the most heartfelt expressions of sympathy and love to the family of Nomzamo Winifred “ Winnie” Zanyiwe Madikizela-Mandela, who passed earlier today. A dedicated wife, mother, anti-apartheid activist and politician, who placed the struggle before everything. Her life and marriage to South African President Nelson Mandela shackled throughout his 27 years of wrongful imprisonment yet, her efforts and message secure her as the “Mother of the Nation,” for her body of works as a social worker, activist and humanitarian. Let us celebrate the life of a dynamic warrior who endured and persevered.” By Stacy M. Brown

(NNPA Newswire Contributor)

South Africa’s “Mother of the Nation” an anti-Apartheid crusader Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died, her family confirmed in a statement on Monday, April 2. The ex-wife of the late Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela was 81. In a statement, her family said Mandela “died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year.” “I am deeply saddened by the passing of…Winnie Mandela,” California Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters said in a statement to NNPA Newswire. “In conjunction with the African National Congress and leaders around the world, she courageously led the efforts to fight for his freedom and end Apartheid in South Africa and, in addition to her activism that inspired and motivated the international community to join the struggle to end apartheid, she especially empowered and galvanized women to rise up and speak out against the abuses of the apartheid regime in South Africa,” Waters said. www.texasmetronews.com
