Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation The Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation was established by veteran journalist Cheryl Smith as a 501(C)3 non profit organization to fund and operate programs and promote activities for youth, with a special emphasis on scholarships, life skills education and college preparation. The many programs that benefit from the foundation are geared toward vast communities and scholarships are awarded indiscriminately although the foundation takes a special interest in youth from historically underserved areas. Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-athon is the major fundraiser for the foundation. Over the years this charitable event has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars which have been used to fund scholarships, provide internships and sponsor journalism workshops. The celebrity bowl-a-thon is a fun event that engages the entire family. There are also community forums that the foundation hosts. Health, Fitness, education, media access, and teen issues are a few of the forums sponsored by the Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation. Thousands have attended these forums where noted speakers included: Mamie Till Mobley (the mother of Emmett Till), noted author/historian Ivan Van Sertima, journalist Thor Christenson, comedian/ activist Dick Gregory and Editor George E. Curry. Over $30,000 in scholarships has been awarded to aspiring journalists, through the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists and over $20,000 has been awarded to student interns from the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program, under the leadership of Texas State Sen. Royce West. For more than a decade, the foundation has been one of the major sponsors of the D/FW-ABJ Urban Journalism Workshop, a 12-week boot camp for aspiring journalists.
