CURRY: Obama should thank Jesse Jackson for winning formula

Whether you supported the victor or not

By George E. Curry

Election day 2012 made some people very happy, while others were very sad, or downright angry. Whatever the case, it is time to move on. There’s no need to fret, cast further dispersions or act a fool. Instead, now is the time to think of the greater good. Is the greater good served by being disrespectful, failing to work together and tearing down your “opponent? Just like the losers have to eat the humble pie and move on--possibly preparing for their next race, the victors must be gracious in defeat -- regardless of what went down during the campaign season. America is hurting and it won’t get better if we have to continue with the counterproductive, selfdestructive behavior as witnessed by some who are considered to be influential and powerful. While the Internet has been a great tool and is credited by many with leading then-Senator Barack Obama to a victory in 2008; clearly it has also been a tool for cowardly acts. Some might say the acts actually wreak of treason, but for some reason, folks are able to use social media networks to make disparaging and inflammatory statements that surely would have landed them behind bars or facing some type of investigation or probe. Folks are hiding behind assumed names and saying some of the most offensive, and yes, racist things. Gone are the days of people having to back up what they say. Instead they can be the biggest of bullies and never leave the privacy of their homes. Anytime anyone mentions anything related to physical contact with the President of these United States, their behinds need to be called out and also hauled in for questioning. Not that any of these brilliant minds are going to have anything of substance to say -- except to hide behind the First Amendment and professing their need for Freedom of Speech. Still they need to also understand that they will be held accountable for their actions. And those who remain silent and let these atrocities continue. Well, you will have to be held accountable for your inactions. Some groups are already looking ahead to the next election. In the meantime and the between time. there is work to do. Voters need to send a message to their elected officials. Let them know that every dog has his day and there’s no time to be petty, condescending and ornery. Don’t applaud the childish behavior that was witnessed across this country. Don’t vote for people who spew that divisive “my party is better and smarter than yours rhetoric. Let your elected officials know that you aren’t stupid, because some are treating you like you are!

President Obama’s campaign strategists are receiving a lot of richly deserved praise in the wake of the president’s victory over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Nov. 6. Obama, who lost the majority of the White vote for the second time, won the election by assembling a progressive Democratic coalition pioneered by Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988. I covered Jackson’s 1984 campaign for the Chicago Tribune and witnessed Jackson laying the groundwork for what would become two Obama victories. “America is not like a blanket – one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size,â€? I heard Jesse Jackson say more times than I care to remember. “America is more like a quilt: many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread. The White, the Hispanic, the Black, the Arab, the Jew, the woman, the Native American, the small farmer, the businessperson, the environmentalist, the peace activist, the young, the old, the lesbian, the gay, and the disabled make up the American quilt.â€? The concept was more frequently expressed in terms of a rainbow. The organization Jackson heads is known as Rainbow PUSH, the result of a merger between Operation PUSH, the organization Jackson created in 1971, and the Rainbow Coalition, an apparatus he developed following his 1984 presidential run. In his stirring speech at the 1984 National Democratic Convention in San Francisco, Jackson spoke at length about the Rainbow Coalition. â€œâ€ŚWe cannot be satisfied by just restoring the old coalition,â€? he said. “Old wine skins must make room for new wine. We must heal and expand. The Rainbow Coalition is making room for Arab Americans‌The Rainbow Coalition is making room for Hispanic Americans‌ The Rainbow is making room for the Native American‌The Rainbow Coalition includes Asian Americans‌

The Rainbow Coalition is making room for the young Americans‌The Rainbow includes disabled veterans‌ The Rainbow is making room for small farmers‌The Rainbow includes lesbians and gays. According to exit polls, Romney won the White vote 59 percent to 39 percent for Obama, which was 3 percent lower than the president’s 2008 outing. Like Clinton before him, Obama demonstrated

Rev. Jesse Jackson

that a candidate for national office does not need a majority of the White vote in order to win. Blacks, who made up 13 percent of the electorate in 2012, favored Obama over Romney 93 percent to 6 percent. Latinos, who made up 10 percent of the electorate, preferred Obama by a margin of 71 percent to 27 percent. Asians, 3 percent of the electorate, supported Obama over Romney 73 percent to 26 percent. The remaining non-White groups, with 2 percent of the electorate, backed Obama by a margin of 58 percent to 38 percent. Obama won the 18-24 category – 11 percent of the electorate – 60 percent to 36 percent for Romney. He also won the 25-29 age-group, which is 8 percent of voters, 60 percent to 38 percent. Those describing themselves as gay,

lesbian or bisexual – 5 percent of voters – favored Obama over Romney 76 percent to 22 percent, compared with straight voters – 95 percent of the electorate – who were evenly divided, with Obama and Romney each receiving 49 percent. Fifty-eight percent of union households – 18 percent of the electorate – supported Obama this year, down just one percentage point from four years ago. They supported Obama at even higher rates in the swing states of Ohio, Wisconsin and Nevada. Despite Jackson’s early coalitionbuilding efforts, it’s no secret that relations between Obama and Jackson are as chilly as the temperature was on the day Obama was first inaugurated as president. The friction was exacerbated in July 2008 after Jackson had been interviewed on Fox News. When the television interview was over, Jackson, apparently unaware that his microphone was still live, told a fellow guest: “See, Barack’s been talking down to Black people‌I want to cut his nuts off.â€? Not surprisingly, the relationship between the two immediately went south, so to speak. An understandably miffed Barack Obama has since kept his distance from Jackson. But as Obama reaches out to Republicans whose stated goal was to make sure he didn’t get re-elected, perhaps it’s time for Obama to have dĂŠtente with Jackson. The legendary civil rights leader has done his penitence. Because of what Jackson later described as his “crude and hurtfulâ€? comment – made at a time African-Americans were hoping to elect their first Black president – many Blacks mentally shipped Jackson off to a political Siberia, a never-never land where they didn’t care if he was never heard from again. As Obama extends the olive branch to his ardent political foes, he should invite Jackson to visit him in the White House. If nothing else, President Obama can thank Jesse Jackson for paving the way for his two memorable victories.

MORIAL: Letter to the President

Marc Morial President National Urban League

Marc H. Morial sent the following letter to President O b a m a , Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker John Boehner outlining the Urban League’s policy priorities for the next four years:

Dear Mr. President, Rep. Pelosi, and Speaker Boehner, The National Urban League congratulates each of you on your victory, and offers its support as, together, you lead the country into the next four years. We write respectfully to share our urgent petition that a second term agenda focus on the issues of economic opportunity and income inequality. While we recognize that the country has been brought from the brink of economic disaster; and job growth has been steady and consistent, we believe

that job creation, economic development and economic empowerment are the most important issues facing our great nation. Accordingly, we urge the following: First, that a comprehensive jobs program be developed and executed by way of a partnership that includes government, the private sector and the nation’s nonprofit community. This partnership must emphasize infrastructure and public works, broadband technology and energy, with a special focus on those communities where unemployment is and remains stubbornly and persistently high. This necessarily requires special attention to the nation’s urban communities and suburban and rural pockets where joblessness remains in double digits and economic suffering is widespread.

your efforts to make college and higher education more affordable by including a new emphasis on job training, workforce development and skills retraining for those citizens who do not choose college or who did not complete high school on time. There is a great untapped potential in these citizens that must be unleashed to power the economic recovery.

has exposed the desperately slim margin to which our most vulnerable citizens cling. Therefore, we propose that any deficit reduction plan include one dollar in revenue enhancements for every dollar of spending cuts. These enhancements can come from reforms to the tax code, including the closing of special interest loopholes, and adjustments to marginal tax rates.

Third, the scourge of gun violence cries out for a comprehensive new approach to community safety and crime reduction. This requires stronger enforcement of existing gun laws, re-enactment of the assault weapons ban, and a thoughtful examination of criminal justice system disparities which have created an exploding prison population at great expense to the taxpayers at both the state and federal level.

We who represent the nation’s urban communities will demand a seat at the table in these discussions, and we are prepared to engage fully with our team of economic and policy experts.

Second, we urge an intense focus on children and youth. We applaud your efforts and leadership when it comes to K-12 education, but we must do more. We need a national policy to move the nation toward universal early childhood education. China has begun to surpass the United States in early childhood education, and we cannot afford to lag behind.

Finally, the National Urban League supports a fair and sensible fiscal plan. Like all Americans, we believe the nation must tackle deficit reduction. Our approach must marry compassion for the most vulnerable Americans with protection for the nation’s jobs, and require sacrifice from every American, including those who have benefited the most.

Moreover, we urge an expansion of

The devastation of Superstorm Sandy

The American people spoke loudly last evening and, in my view, want all parties to put the business of the people first in a spirit of American patriotism and unity rather than resorting to ideological, divisive agendas. While there are many issues that you must confront, we believe those outlined above are the most important facing the nation and urge that they form the centerpiece of your second term domestic agenda. Sincerely yours, Marc H. Morial President and Chief Executive Officer National Urban League

Top 3 Things to Know About Young Voters and the 2012 Election Young Americans showed an historic 11-point swing away from President Obama, only demographic to distance itself from the President at that level Millennials demonstrate shift in views on solutions to unemployment and the bad economy, favoring lower taxes and less government involvement WASHINGTON -- Generation Opportunity, the nation’s largest social media and grassroots organization reaching out to young Americans ages 18-29, is releasing data and analysis on young voters and the 2012 election. Generation Opportunity has built a fan base of over 4 million on Facebook and has been in front of hundreds of thousands of young adults through direct contact at the grassroots level, raising awareness of and fostering a discussion on critical economic issues including overall and young adult unemployment, debt, and federal spending. 1. There was a stunning 11-point swing in the young adult vote in the 2012 Presidential Election. In 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama won 18-29 year olds by 34 points (66%32%). This year, President Obama won 18-29 year olds by 23 points (60%-37%). The youth vote swung 11 points away from President Obama, more than twice any other age demographic. No other demographic showed movement anywhere near this: 3044 showed +1% point increase in support for Obama from 2008; 45-64 showed -5%

decrease in support for Obama since 2008; and 65+ showed -4% decrease in support for Obama since 2008. 2. President Obama is witnessing a fracturing of what was once considered his unshakable base of support among young voters. 2012 saw the largest drop in support from the 18-29 demographic for any incumbent President who won re-election in history. Underneath these numbers, young Americans are fundamentally reshaping how they think about issues like unemployment, job creation, taxes, and regulation. The fact that young Americans will represent 38% of the electorate by 2020 makes this all the more relevant. 3. Contrary to conventional wisdom, young adult turnout actually increased from the 2008 level. The conventional wisdom, which was advanced and shared by numerous news outlets and grassroots organizations, including the AP, Pew, and Huffington Post, was that young people would A) decrease in turnout compared to 2008 levels, and B) vote in just as strong of a margin for President Obama in 2012 as they did 2008. Yet, young adult turnout actually increased (from 18% to 19%) and swung 11 points away from President Obama. Generation Opportunity was heavily involved in reshaping both the terrain and the

national dialogue with regard to the young adult vote going into the 2012 election. Beginning in June of 2011, Generation Opportunity took to the national stage as the largest national grassroots organization focused on young Americans that presented a clear alternative to the mantra of bigger government and increased federal spending. Generation Opportunity gave a voice to the millions of young Americans who were dissatisfied by the status quo of high unemployment and a lack of meaningful, full-time jobs and were searching for an alternative. The organization utilized an integrated strategy that combined online targeted social media, targeted field activities, and earned media to educate and, ultimately, mobilize young Americans 18-29 year olds. Young adults were strongly encouraged to make their voices heard for real change. Generation Opportunity built a variety of targeted Facebook platforms which attracted a fan base of over 4 million Millennials, garnering over 1.1 billion views and over 9 million online interactions via likes, comments, and shares of sourced information on issues like youth unemployment and the impacts of increased federal spending and debt. Generation Opportunity field organizers engaged, in person, over 250,000 young adults at over 600 targeted events nationwide. Major events included the League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC) annual convention, American

Student Government Association leadership conference, the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and over 500 state, county, and community events, such as Earth Day festivals, concerts, sporting events, farmers markets, and various cultural festivals. Generation Opportunity’s grassroots field team organized young people in North Carolina, Missouri, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maine, Florida, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, California, New Jersey, and Nevada, among others. The organization also utilized a variety of online and grassroots tools and tactics to attract tens of thousands of young Americans to the electoral process, register new voters across the country, and train thousands of activists to make their voices heard in advance of the 2012 election through a variety of ways, including letters to the editor, town halls, and radio programs. Aromatic Compresses By Deborah Long Chambers

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help the body heal itself. Essential oils are the natural extracts obtained from aromatic plants. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and should be used with care or under the direction of a Certified Aromatherapist. They have anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, as well as antibacterial properties to name a few. Aromatherapy is widely recognized as an extremely effective form of complementary medicine, and is in no way intended to replace the treatment of a licensed medical practitioner.

warm aromatic compress. Stress and tension can also be alleviated with an aromatic compress. The issue and area of distress determines the water temperature and steps of preparation for an aromatic compress. Adjust water temperature before adding essential oils. Always consult the advice of a Certified Aromatherapist, when unsure. For areas of the body, the steps are as follows: 1) in a large bowl, pour 4 to 6 cups of water; 2) add 5 to 7 drops of an essential oil or an essential oil blend to water and mix with hand; 3) dip a hand towel in the bowl and let soak for a few seconds; 4) remove the cloth and squeeze out excess moisture; 5) apply to affected area. For the face/ forehead/ neck areas (e.g. for headaches), the steps are as follows: 1) in a small bowl, pour 1 to 2 cups of water; 2) add

New Breed of Beauty CO - E DSupply opens in North Dallas to meet growing demand for products

A new specialty beauty supply store has opened in North Dallas to service the growing number of African-American women wearing natural hair. Naturally Divine Beauty is a full-fledged beauty store supply and natural hair salon at 3556 Forest Lane in Dallas. It is the first of its kind in North Texas. “Natural hair is not a fad, it’s a choice, said Audra Cooper, the owner of Naturally Divine Beauty. The popularity of natural hairstyles has spawned a crop of specialty beauty parlors throughout the region, and shifted the economic balance of the $185 million black hair-care market. Cooper moved the store to its new location from a kiosk at Grapevine Mills Malls after the space became too small to handle the increase demand for products. The 1,500 square foot store and salon is a beauty boutique filled with carefully selected highend products made by AfricanAmerican owned companies

Word, another voice crying out in the wilderness to “prepare, ye, the way of the Lord. I am thoroughly convinced that the greatest pleasure in this galaxy, in addition to crowning Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, is leading others to Him and being used of the Lord to preach the Kingdom to them. Our Lord and Savior is soon to return. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance and with the greatest sense of urgency that we, children of God via the Blood of the Lamb, Christ Jesus, come into a complete understanding of who we are in Him and what our assignment is. We must, as a body of believers, know beyond any shadow of doubt, that we are the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. We do not operate in our own righteousness, but in our heavenly Father’s righteousness. And to be righteous is to be in right standing with the Lord. It means we have accepted His way as being “right. There is no righteousness outside of Him. But in Him, we are witness bearers of the Light of the world. He is the true Light that we, as saints of God, bear witness of. And with that, He has also mandated us to let the Light in us shine so brightly that others are drawn to Him. So, we have a great calling, the greatest assignment that anyone in this universe can have, which brings us to the point the Holy Spirit wants us to get, and then flow with.

Looking for the perfect gift idea?

Skyfall

Bradfield at the movies

By Jamille Bradfield amille I Messenger Bradfield Film Critic and Entertainment Writer Bond. James Bond. These three simple words of dialogue have been synonymous with the world’s smoothest international spy since the character first came to life fifty years ago on the big screen in DR. NO. The often-imitated phrase rises to the occasion once again in the latest Bond movie — SKYFALL. Released in theaters nationwide in the U.S. on November 9, 2012, SKYFALL is Ian Fleming’s 23rd installment in what just might be the best James Bond flick in the franchise’s longrunning history. The film had a recordbreaking opening weekend in the U.S., grossing a whopping $87.8 million. Directed by Sam Mendes and written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, SKYFALL pays tribute to all things classic Agent 007. From the gripping action scenes to the seduction of the film’s head-turning “it” girl to the cameo appearance by Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 outfitted with machine guns, SKYFALL gives the audience everything it came for and then some. Not to mention, returning for his third appearance in the leading role, Daniel Craig, 44, is in a word: spectacular.

opening montage set to the film’s official theme song by the same title, “Skyfall” performed by six-time Grammy winner, Adele. If there is to be any legitimate criticism of this film it could be argued that the third act was a tad bit too long, perhaps drawn out by what felt like extraneous action scenes at times. However, Mendes, an Academy-Award winner (Best Director, AMERICAN BEAUTY in 1999) does a tremendous job of bringing the screenplay to life visually while keeping viewers hooked to the plot and various twists and complications in the process.

Marlohe, SKYFALL is an action/ adventure that ultimately gives moviegoers, die-hard Bond fan or not, an early Christmas gift chock-full of pure entertainment with a pretty little “blockbuster” bow on top.

Consider the gift of travel the next time you need a birthday, wedding or graduation gift for someone special. American Airlines Travel Gift Cards are available for purchase and redemption at AA.com in any denomination between $50 and $1500. You can buy either a plastic gift card and have it mailed or a virtual gift card with your personal message delivered via email. You can use up to eight (8) Gift Cards at one time toward the purchase of a ticket to hundreds of exciting destinations throughout the world. And, with no expiration date or fees, American Airlines Gift Cards are perfect for any occasion. Terms and Conditions apply.

Sony Pictures’ SKYFALL has a run time of two hours and 23 minutes, and is rated PG-13 for intense violence sequences throughout, some sexuality, language and smoking. One of the best Bond films ever made! Four reels

The Ford Black College Quiz Show launches 7th Season at Spelman

Actor RonReaco Lee of BET's "Let's Stay Together" Joins Twelve Students from HBCUs to Test Their African American History Facts and Compete for Cash Prizes

On Saturday, November 3, the 7th Annual Ford Black College Quiz Show brought together some of our nation's brightest minds for two days of fun and competition on the campus of Atlanta University Center's prestigious Spelman College. The "Jeopardystyle" televised competition offers a dozen gifted student players the chance to represent their schools and test their knowledge of African-American history. In addition to earning bragging rights for their performance, students compete for thousands of dollars for their studies. Debuting as host this year is charismatic actor and Atlanta native RonReaco Lee, star of the BET hit series "Let's Stay Together." "Participating in this year's Ford Black College Quiz has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my career to date," said Lee. "Being able to interact with the students and witness first hand their enthusiasm, competitive nature and sheer brain power is something I know I'll never forget!" In a twist to the show's format, every participant has an opportunity to win -- each student is awarded cash prizes based on their ranking in four rounds of competitive play. Four first-place winners, one from each show, earn a prize of $5,000. In addition, $1,000 and $500 in scholarship money is awarded to second and third place contestants in each half-hour episode. "I am extremely excited about our new format for the 2013 Ford Black College Quiz series, which increased our student scholarship monies to over $25,000 - the highest ever over the 7 years of the program series," said Don Jackson, executive producer and Central City Productions CEO. "Also, the new format provided an opportunity for us to have four 1st place winners, rather than just one grand prize winner at the end of our 4-part series. This added another dimension of excitement and competition for all of the participating students."

– The Dallas Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is partnering with the SMU Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering’s Hart Center for Engineering Leadership to launch a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) academy aimed at reducing the “STEM gap” among female African American students. The new “STEM–ulating Left Brain and Right Brain” program targets students in grades 6-12 in the Dallas metro area. The STEM Academy, a series of academic explorations, kicked off Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Doubletree Campbell Centre with participants and their families and community partners joining Dallas Chapter members to celebrate the commencement of The STEM Academy. Additionally, United States Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson addressed the group and discussed the National STEM Initiative. The first STEM Academy session premiered Saturday, Nov. 10, at Caruth Hall on the SMU campus. The first session will focus on robotics and PH testing, introducing the concepts of electrical engineering, coding, and computer science to the students as well as demonstrating practical applications for chemistry. Subsequent STEM Academy programs include: Jan. 26, 2013 – STEM Careers and Role Models Feb. 9, 2013 – Aviation April 27, 2013 – Global Information Technology May 18, 2013 – Rockets SMU’s Lyle School and the Dallas Chapter of Links, Incorporated and are committed to increasing STEM

readiness by providing student participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to pursue STEM degree programs.

Both are working to make STEMrelated internships, fellowships and career opportunities accessible to all students so they can compete in the global workforce. The Hart Center supports the development of Lyle students by encouraging them to take the lead on important issues and to solve big problems such as the lack of minorities in STEM careers. 50 DISD students have been enrolled for the long-term program, which incorporates short and longterm goals with measurable shortterm outcomes. The program will also focus on sustainable immediate outcomes along with long-term measurable outcomes. The Dallas Chapter has an official relationship with DISD as a volunteer partner that will allow chapter representatives to communicate with principals and other administrators and share academic data. Congresswoman Johnson, chair of

the future scientists, engineers and mathematicians, said, “The number of students of color in STEM related careers is significantly low due to a lack of access to sufficient STEM education. Our STEM–ulating Left Brain and Right Brain program helps to fill that void by providing students with opportunities to be exposed to and readied for STEM – related careers.” Jennifer Kristin Fugate, one of the Lyle student organizers, said she would have enjoyed and learned from the opportunity to “hang out” with college-age role models when she was in middle school. “I believe that our impact on these girls will be tremendous and life-changing, because they will see how cool and exciting it is to be an engineer and will want to be just like us when they grow up.” Fugate said.

BRIEFS Dallas County launches new webpage The new Dallas County web page debuts Friday November 16, as part of the revamping of the County’s overall web presence by the new Chief Information Officer Stanley “Vic” Victrum and his I.T. team. Dallas County is the second largest county in the state of Texas, home to 2.4 million people from all over the world and truly an American 21st Century Mosaic of people, culture and business. The home page is the central point of contact between the public and the County. The streamlining of the new page is part of an ongoing effort by the Dallas County I.T. team to bring the County into the 21st Century by facilitating better access, and easing the flow of information for the general public.] The overhaul of the homepage is the first step in moving the County’s web presence forward. Currently the County’s website gets approximately 30 million hits per month and between 7-9 million webpage views; the new page presents with a leaner, less redundant, forward thinking instrument for the County. “Vic” credits the County I.T. Web Team with developing the more streamlined design “the County I.T. Team very much looks forward to working with the other County Departments to complete the appropriate renovations throughout the County’s web presence.” It is estimated that a complete overhaul of the County’s 1600 associated web pages will take between 18 - 24 months to complete! This is due to the magnitude of the project and dayto-day maintenance workloads. The current infrastructure will support the proposed changes to the County Website to improve the customer experience by implementing standards of operation, innovation and technology.

A Jackson State loss sends Alabama State to the SWAC Championship Game. “It’s been a wild season with a lot of ups and downs in our polls,” explained John Posey, CEO of Urban Sports News. “Jackson State’s season has been one

of runs. The Tigers lost their first four games and is now on a six-game winning streak. The surprises of the season are Grambling (1-9), Prairie View (3-7), Southern (3-7) and Norfolk State (47). All have had nightmare seasons. Grambling is the biggest surprise given the program’s tradition. There are bigger problems than it’s a young team. Southern has problems from the top down. The athletic administration made a number of bonehead moves that hurt the team. On the positive side, Mississippi Valley State (4-6), Howard (6-4), and Alcorn State (4-6) have all revived their programs with impressive wins.”
