Former U.S. Trade Representative Kirk joins law firm Says he has no desire to seek another public office

As speculation circulated about the future of former Dallas mayor and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP has announced that Ambassador Kirk, who served as the United States Trade Representative in the Obama Administration until February 2013, has joined the firm as Senior Of Counsel, where he will be resident in the firm's Dallas and Washington, D.C. offices and will focus on providing strategic advice to companies with global interests. As the U.S. Trade Representative, Kirk served as a member of President Obama's Cabinet and negotiated trade agreements around the world as the President's primary trade advisor. His distinguished career in the public sector includes service as the Secretary of State of Texas under Governor Ann Richards and two terms as the Mayor of Dallas. He was the first African American to serve as the U.S. Trade Representative and Mayor of Dallas. The Ambassador was nominated by President Obama to serve as U.S. Trade Representative and was confirmed in March 2009 by the U.S. Senate in a 92-5 confirmation vote. Mr. Kirk led the Office of the United States Trade Representative, which is responsible for developing and recommending U.S. trade policy to the President of the United States, conducting trade negotiations at bilateral and multilateral levels, and coordinating trade policy within the government through the interagency Trade Policy Staff Committee and Trade Policy Review Group. During his tenure, Mr. Kirk advanced plurilateral negotiations with the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union. "Ron Kirk is a man of enormous integrity and capacity who has selflessly devoted himself to his city, state, and country," said Rob Walters, Co-Partner in Charge of the firm's Dallas office. "We are honored he chose Gibson Dunn, and we look forward to working with him on matters of great importance to our clients." "I have been relentless in advocating our nation's interests around the world," said Mr. Kirk. "I will carry that same passion and dedication into my work in the private sector. Gibson Dunn is a preeminent global law firm and provides an ideal platform for this next chapter in my career." The next chapter for Mr. Kirk will have a lot to do with business, he said, following the announcement. “Business will determine where I spend my time,” he said, when asked if he would be spending more time in Dallas or DC. “But I will base out of Dallas.” Often quoted as saying how much he liked the job as Mayor of Dallas and also how important family is to him, Mr. Kirk, was adamant, however, that he would not be seeking elective office again.

The Rich are Treated Differently

F. Scott Fitzgerald got it right when he said the rich are different. We are witnessing that in the sequester fiasco and we heard it in another form last week when Attorney General Eric H. Holder offered an George E. Curry asinine reason for not prosecuting bankers/ gangsters known as banksters. Testifying before Congress, Holder said, “I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions becomes so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them when we are hit with indications that if you do prosecute, if you do bring a criminal charge, it will have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy. Holder is not the Secretary of Treasury. While he, like all of us, might be concerned about the economy, that’s not his area of responsibility. His job as the nation’s chief law enforcer is to enforce the law. And that should apply to banksters like it applies to gangsters. But, as we know, the rich and institutions they control are treated differently. This variation of banks being “too big to fail is essentially telling us their CEOs are “too big to jail. If banks are too big to fail,

EDITORIAL

we should remind ourselves who allowed them to grow that large. Each time big banks gobbled up smaller ones like ATMs suck in your check deposit, they had to first win approval from the federal government. That is the same federal government that bails them out when they get in trouble and the same federal government that now whines that their CEOs are two big to jail. Try explaining that to a first-time, non-violent drug user who is rotting away behind bars. Even in clear-cut cases of gangster behavior, there is a double-standard. Take the case of HSBC, which signed a $1.9 billion settlement with the U.S. after CEO Stuart Gulliver acknowledged the bank’s failure to catch at least $881 million in drug trafficking money that was laundered through the institution’s accounts. Officials admitted their bank had facilitated illicit financial transfers on behalf of rogue nations, including Iran and Libya, as well as Mexican and Colombian drug cartels. Their punishment? A fine that equaled 11 percent of last year’s profits and a promise to do a better job of monitoring their accounts. And they avoided criminal prosecution. Like other banks, HSBC will continue to benefit from American taxpayers underwriting its deposit insurance. Senator Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.]

By George E. Curry

observed, “It has been almost five years since the financial crisis, but the big banks are still too big to fail. That means they are subsidized by about $83 billion a year by American taxpayers and are still not being held fully accountable for breaking the law. The $83 billion a year Warren referred to represents the amount taxpayers pay in insurance to make sure U.S. bank deposits are guaranteed. Think about that. Banks are profit making entities yet the public pays their insurance. Does anyone else pay for your homeowner’s insurance? Health insurance? Car insurance? So why should the public share in banks’ expenses, but not their profits? It is yet another example of the rich and their powerful institutions being different? Contrast that different treatment with what’s happening in our nation’s capital. In the never-ending game of chicken, Republicans are threating yet another budget showdown. They are adamant that whatever comes out of the ongoing sequester and deficit debates, all cuts must come from the spending side, including Medicare and Social Security. Although President Obama has used strong, protective language in his State of the Union and inauguration speeches, he has a tendency to cave in when negotiating with

Republicans – and that has many Democrats worried. Obama and his advisers have already stated that they are amenable to a “grand bargain whereby the White House and Republicans will reach an agreement on budget cuts. So far, 107 of the 200 House Democrats have signed a letter to the president threatening to vote “against any and every cut to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits – including raising the retirement age or cutting the cost of living adjustments that our constituents earned and need. In the alternative, they want the grand bargain to “rely on economic growth and more fair revenue-raising policies to solve our fiscal problems. Those policies should include putting an end to subsidies for big businesses and raising the taxes on the wealthiest Americans. Speaking on CNBC last week, House Speaker John Boehner said, “Listen, we’ve got a structural spending problem that has to be addressed. The president’s sequester is in effect, and it will be in effect until there’s an agreement on cuts and reforms that put us on a path to balance the budget over the next 10 years. But none of those cuts and reforms on the patch to a balanced budget involve touching the banksters or the rich. After all, as well all

If the GOP Wants to Diversify, It Might Want to Start With Its Platform It's difficult for some to process the fact that my parents were Republicans. But they were, as was our Pastor; that is, until the mid-'60s. As it became abundantly clear that Republicans were going to stand on the wrong side of civil rights, on the wrong side of progress and on the wrong side of history, it became obvious to my parents and our Pastor that they would know longer stand with them. And so it went for many African Americans, and progressive Whites. The Republican Party quickly transformed and the Party of old was very different from the Party of present. Today, that concept can be multiplied tenfold. There's a reason why Blacks, Latinos, Asians, gays, immigrants and other groups overwhelmingly voted with the Democrats during the last election -- mainly that we vote with those who fight for greater equality. So if Reince Priebus, National Republican Party Chairman, and the rest of his comrades think that we can 'bought' for any amount of money, it's time we set the record straight. As of late, Priebus has been touting the GOP's new 'Growth and Opportunity

GARLAND

JOURNAL Established 2002

Project Plan,' which assesses their failures in the 2012 election and ways in which they can reach us minorities. Telling CBS's Bob Schieffer that the Party would be announcing a $10 million initiative this year, Priebus said the money would be used to send hundreds of paid individuals to venture into communities of color across the country and talk about the Republican Party and its brand. I'm glad that Priebus and Republicans recognize and acknowledge that they have a severe problem attracting minorities to their Party. But unfortunately, they fail to realize that all the money in the world can't solve their problems unless they learn to change their policies. Leading up to the great election of 2012, we witnessed countless efforts to disenfranchise the votes of Blacks, Latinos, the elderly and more that were spearheaded primarily by Republicans. Because they tried so hard to stop us from voting, we showed up in historic numbers yet again and let our voices be heard. Clearly, they received the message. But tragically, they have yet to alter their behavior. Until they stop enacting roadblocks to voting, until they stop

challenging Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act itself and until they realize that driving voters to the polls enhances our democracy and levels the playing field, they will not win any new supporters. And let's not pretend that the GOP's diversity problem ends with voter equality. When the bulk of their platform and policies continue to reward the rich and punish hardworking Americans, who will side with that? When Republicans want to give tax breaks to the wealthy and cut vital programs like Social Security, Medicare, unemployment benefits, food stamps for the struggling and more, who wants to align themselves with that sort of thinking? When GOP leaders attack teachers, public workers and workers altogether, why would anyone jump to their Party? When the Republican mantra includes cuts to education, environmental safety, jobs, healthcare, police, emergency services and virtually all the things that make this nation great, how can we ever agree with that? Last week, Priebus took his 'minority outreach' plans on the road and came to my hometown of Brooklyn. As he tried to convince the audience that his Party was

going to do more to include minorities, Priebus never once indicated that their policies might shift. So there's only two things to deduct from all of this: either he and the Republican Party are trying to appear that they are reaching out to people of color in an effort to win moderate Whites, or they really think that we are naĂŻve enough to move to a Party that does not even remotely address our concerns or fight for our interests. Either way, we should be insulted. And they should be embarrassed. After the massive economic collapse of 2008, a record number of voters participated in the election because they understood how serious the stakes were. In 2012, when Romney's '47 percent video' displayed his disdain for half the country, and many attempted to further disenfranchise voters, we came out in full force. No longer denying our ability to elect candidates and show up to the polls, the Republican Party thinks it can win us over by just acknowledging that we exist. I'm glad they finally realize that they have a diversity problem, but until their fundamental platform changes, they'll only see that problem grow.

JOHNSON: A Pope of the people transportation while a senior church official in Argentina. Once selected he quickly took the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, who was known for his work with people who had little wealth, but great faith. Legend has it that once while praying he heard a voice that said “go Francis and repair my house.”

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The selection of former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new leader of the world’s one billion Catholics is a welcomed event to those of us who believe that a central part of faith is work that uplifts people who are economically burdened and bruised. By all accounts from those who are familiar with him and his work, the new pope is a profound intellectual who has avoided the regal trappings of office. Instead, he lived in a simple apartment and traveled on public

Born in 1182, Saint Francis founded the Franciscan order whose members were devoted to the service of others, particularly those who found themselves in need. His life was one that many priests throughout the history of the church have attempted to emulate for its depth of belief and its vast charity. A fan of soccer in his native country, Pope Francis refused to be driven in a chauffeured limousine and prepared his own meals. He is the first Jesuit Pope and is also the first non-European Pope in 1200 years. I believe that Pope Francis will be inclusive, that he will seek more diversity in the lead-

ership of the church and that he will place greater emphasis on the development of the faith in South America and Africa, two continents where the church’s population continues to grow. According to the Pew Research Center, the five countries with the highest numbers of Catholics are Brazil (126 m), Mexico (96 m), the Philippines (75.5 m), the United States (75.3 m) and Italy (49 m). There are 31 million Catholics in Argentina, the Pope’s land of birth. Thirty-nine percent of the world’s Catholics live in Latin America and the Caribbean. No other part of the world has a larger percentage. While serving as a Cardinal in Argentina, Pope Francis spontaneously washed and kissed the feet of 12 patients ravaged with HIV/AIDS during a hospital visit. He said to those with him that he was not one to forget the “sick and the poor.” Certainly, he will prove himself to be a pope of the people.

MORIAL: Hear Ye Hear Ye Justice Scalia - Voting is a Right By Marc Morial President and CEO National Urban League

“No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice or procedure shall be imposed or applied by any State or political subdivision to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.” Voting Rights Act of 1965 Last month during Supreme Court oral arguments in Shelby County v. Holder, Justice Antonin Scalia called a key part of the Voting Rights Act – Section Five – a “racial entitlement.” Section Five requires that the Justice Department or a federal court “pre-clear” any changes made to voting procedures by covered jurisdictions to ensure they do not “deny or abridge the right to vote on account of race or color.” This act was established to fix a broken system, and it remains relevant today. As long as blatant voter suppression measures like voter ID laws and district gerrymandering are being used to keep certain groups from the polls, the Voting Rights Act – in its entirety – remains necessary. And to clear up any confusion

that Justice Scalia has or anyone who found merit in his argument, let’s be clear: Voting “rights” are indeed that – a right guaranteed to every citizen of the United States. They are not a special privilege. They are not a gift. Justice Scalia’s comments are a shameful reiteration of a right-wing political interpretation of the Constitution. The fact is, the Voting Rights Act was in response to an inarguably unjust and unfair system for voting in this country. Prior to the Voting Rights Act, millions of African Americans, primarily in the South, were forced to run a gauntlet of “voting qualifications or prerequisites,” including ludicrous literacy tests, discriminatory poll taxes, and other bureaucratic restrictions. And when those measures failed, blacks were routinely subjected to intimidation, economic sanctions, beatings and even murder. The 1964 murders of three voting rights activists at the hands of Mississippi Klansmen and the March 7, 1965 Bloody Sunday beating of peaceful voting rights marchers by Alabama State troopers are horrific examples. While there has been undeniable progress since 1965, voting rights abuses are still sadly a part of the American electoral landscape. In fact, every presidential election of this new century has been plagued by voting

problems – from “hanging chads,” to Tea Party backed campaigns of Election Day intimidation to new voter ID restrictions. Cut backs in early voting even led to a Florida woman, 102-year-old Desiline Victor, having to stand in line for three hours to vote in November’s presidential election. The Voting Rights Act, and specifically its Section 5 preclearance provisions, is still needed to protect against such abuses. While Justice Scalia is either confused or misguided in his characterization of the right to vote as a racial entitlement, in 2006, Congress upheld this basic right by overwhelmingly reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act for another 25 years. House Speaker, John Boehner said at the time, “The Voting Rights Act has been an effective tool in protecting a right that is fundamental to our democracy and renewing this landmark law will ensure that each and every citizen can continue to exercise their right to vote without the threat of intimidation or harassment.” We intend to hold the Speaker to those words. If the Supreme Court declares any part of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional, Congress will have a final chance to keep Section 5 alive. ASK THE ADVOCATE

Dear Advocate, I was sexually abused by my uncle when I was in the second grade. The worst part about it is that my mother and grandmother blamed me for it and they tried to make to confess, but I never did. I had nightmares that I could not explain for several years as a child. To this day I struggle with memory blocks and putting together all what happened with this terrible man. As bad as that was, the worst part, however, is the fact that my family did not believe me and punished me. As an adult now, I still struggle with anger and depression. I think I’m fairly successful in my life. I graduated college and I have a good job and I’m able to support and take care of myself but at times I feel like something is holding me back. Why am I still dealing with this when this happened so long ago? Confused and Angry! Dallas, TX Dear Confused and Angry, Your story is tragic but unfortunately a common occurrence. I’m so sorry to hear of your hurt, pain, fear and betrayal at such an early age. Sexual abuse is a traumatic experience which causes a great deal of confusion and anger in a person’s life. First of all, I want to say this to you. This is not your fault! Hear me again, this is not your fault! Survivors carry a bucket load of false guilt and shame which belong solely on the abuser, which in your case, was your uncle. No child at any time can provide genuine consent to sexual activity because they are lacking the mental and emotional development to understand the consequences that come along with this act. So, he is held 100% responsible for his shameful and criminal act committed against you. Secondly, not to be believed by primary caretakers is a double betrayal and often feels worse than the actual sexual violation. I regret that your mother and grandmother were not able to provide you the care and protection you needed in order to feel safe. The nightmares, memory blocks, confusion, depression and anger are the after-effects of sexual trauma. Sexual abuse creates an emotional wound in the victim/survivor’s life and will not be healed until it is appropriately addressed. Many times we think we can ignore it and it will go away. We’re only deceiving ourselves with this mentality. The pain will express itself in other areas of our lives: mentally, emotionally, physically, relationally and spiritually. Seek a licensed professional who is trained in working with survivors of sexual violence. Join a sexual abuse recovery group whereby you can learn truth about your experience and be healed.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn Jones is a spokesperson and advocate for the sexually exploited. Being victimized herself as an adolescent she has walked the path of recovery from victim, to survivor to an overcomer. She began facilitating support groups in 2008 to help survivors of sexual violence heal emotionally and spiritually from the devastating effects of inappropriate sexual behavior.

National media takes notice as Jasmine Guy continues to speak out against child sex trafficking for “I Am Not Yours!” ATLANTA- On the heels of a successful campaign launch for”I Am Not Yours!”, a campaign committed to taking a stand against child sexual exploitation, Jasmine Guy has been making her case in national media with the likes of NPR, CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux, Huffington Post and most recently on HLN’s “Raising America” where she discussed the disturbing statistics associated with child sex trafficking, an issue that falls under the Human trafficking/sex slavery offenses. Ms. Guy spoke on the very illusive and persuasive ways children between the ages of 12 - 17 are victimized

by child sex traffickers and why adults have the ultimate responsibility of protecting our children. She also spoke to key ways adults can tell if a child is the victim of a child sex exploiter. The I Am Not Yours! project mission under the Not Yours! brand is to financially support organizations who spread awareness and offer viable solutions in the fight against child sex trafficking by donating proceeds from purchased brand product. In January, President Obama declared the month as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The president wrote that, “trafficking networks operate both domestically and trans-nationally and although abuses disproportionately affect women and girls, the victims of this ongoing global tragedy are men, women and children of all ages,” an issue that Ms. Guy spoke to specifically in her HLN interview.

Baisden, who commands a daily audience of over seven million listeners, said he is unable to discuss the particulars but concluded that a deal could not be made on mutually agreeable terms. Recognized as one of the most influential men in radio, his "Michael Baisden Show" is one of the top rated afternoon drive radio programs heard in the top urban markets. He is also a TV talk show host, filmmaker and New York Times best-selling author with nearly two million books in print. Now in his tenth year on the air, Baisden wants his radio family to know he did everything in his power to continue his "Michael Baisden Show" without interruption. "We're already planning to return to the air as soon as possible in a way that will give the 'Michael Baisden Show' a more direct relationship with our affiliates, and most importantly, our listeners," cites Pamela Exum, his business manager. Baisden began his career as an author, self publishing several best selling books including "Never Satisfied," "Men Cry In The Dark," "The Maintenance Man I and II," and "God's Gift to Women." casion garnered tens of thousands of citizens of all races to peacefully march in support of six young men who had been unfairly treated by the justice system. Another historic year was 2008 when Michael Baisden endorsed Senator Barack Obama and went on to celebrate President Obama's victory with over 4,000 fans at a watch party in Miami on election night. The Obama camp, along with millions of listeners, credited him with being one of the major forces behind this historic victory to elect the first African American to the Presidency of the United States and in his reelection in 2012. In December 2009, Baisden called for a National Mentor Training Day and announced his plans for a 2010 nationwide campaign. He pledged up to $350,000 of his own money to be donated in over 72 markets he would visit on a bus tour. The outreach was named "One Million Mentors National Campaign To Save Our Kids." ongoing partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Mentoring Brothers In Action are all a big part of what made the "Michael Baisden Show" so successful. Baisden still vows to continue his Michael Baisden Live Tour with his co-host, comedian George Willborn. It's a One Night Only event with seminars, networking, a comedy show, and an 'old school' after party. "If the affiliates still want us to come to town, we'll be there," says Baisden. "There's no reason for our relationships to stop, in fact, this is our chance to get on the ground close to the people where we belong!" Baisden reflects, ""It's not about the job, it's about the journey. I have been grinding for over 10 years, fighting for the underdog, inspiring people daily on my Michael Baisden Live Page on Facebook and working my butt off to produce the best show on radio. I hope my fans miss me... because I'm definitely going to miss them," Michael says. "But this is not the end, it's the Next Chapter!"

Foundation presents screening for children during Dallas International Film Festival

The artist of “Ewing Pride” Mario AC Della Casa, Arthur E. Benjamin, Larry Hagman, and Dallascast members Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy.

The Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation partnered with The Larry Hagman Foundation, along with the Dallas Film Society and LOOK Cinemas, to offer students from Dallas Independent School District a chance to experience the Dallas International Film Festival in a unique way on Opening Day. More than 100 students from Dunbar Elementary and Dade Middle School – through The Larry Hagman Foundation partnership with Frazier Revitalization, Inc. – enjoyed a walk down the red carpet, a matinee screening of the animated film “The Croods,” and an opportunity for a brief Q&A with filmmakers following the screening. Arthur E. Benjamin, chairman of the Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation, is sponsoring the Dallas International Film Festival for the fourth year and, this year, is partnering with The Larry Hagman Foundation, for the first time at the festival, as a way to provide an extraordinary and educational experience benefiting children of Dallas in honor of the late Larry Hagman. “Larry was my friend, my mentor and one of those ‘bigger than life personalities’ that touched one's life and heart in such a way that things are never the same again,” described Benjamin. “This partnership with The Larry Hagman Foundation is about remembering a great ‘Dallas Point of Light’ by recognizing Mr. Hagman's works and his contributions to the underprivileged children and youth of Dallas. We are grateful to honor him in this special way.” "We are so grateful for the generosity of Arthur E. Benjamin and the Dallas International Film Festival for providing the students of Dunbar Elementary and Dade Middle School with this educational and entertaining experience,” said Lisa Blue Baron, president of The Larry Hagman Foundation. “Larry would have been overjoyed about being a part of this field trip with the students he was so proud to support through his Foundation." Students arrived at LOOK Cinemas and stepped off of the school bus onto the red carpet. Once escorted to their seats inside the auditorium, they heard from the Dallas Film Society, The Larry Hagman Foundation and Benjamin before the movie starts. “We are glad to work with such great organizations as the Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation and The Larry Hagman Foundation in order to honor such an icon as Larry Hagman,” said Renée Contreras, Director of Membership, Education and Outreach of the Dallas Film Society. “This will be such an incredible opportunity to expose these students to the art of film.”

Ask Gwen Gwendolyn Baines is an author, lecturer and syndicated advice columnist. The “Ask Gwendolyn Baines advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association. (NNPA)-Washington, D.C.

My husband mistreated me but later tried to be nice! Dear Gwen: I have been married for seven years and the marriage has been horrible from the get-go. In short, Gwendolyn, I have suffered abuse, abandonment, disrespect and dishonesty. My mother advised me not to marry him. I have truly regretted not taking her advice. The problem continued‌.My husband left me because I refused to take a job in a rundown hotel in a rundown section of town. He was trying to push me into danger but he didn’t have a job at all. After I refused to take the job, he started calling me names. He tried to assure me I was a nobody. I couldn’t take care of my child and that I was stupid. About six months ago, he called and said he didn’t want to be married anymore. From that point I moved on with my life and have found happiness. I now have a new friend and he treats me like gold, bronze, and silver. He says I am more valuable than diamonds. When I told my husband, he started to be nicer and wanted to come back. I think he realizes I don’t want to give him another chance. I have filed for divorce. What makes me angry is that he has taken up friendship with another woman so soon after our separation. Joan Dear Joan: Your husband more than likely already had his new friend. Do not become bitter with him. He is not worth your thoughts. It is only a matter of time before he starts to mistreating her as well. And, Joan, he might treat her good but don’t concern yourself with that. A failed marriage or a failed courtship hurts and hurts badly. Enjoy your new friend. Girl, you got it going on. Many men will treat you like gold, bronze, and silver – but seldom you find a man who will think of you as — diamonds in the mix.

A devout Seventh Day Adventist and a conscientious objector with no gun in his holster, Zoltán Kubinyi defied Nazi orders to have the men be liquidated as Germany was losing the war and there was no more need for them. Upon liberation by the Russian Army, he was captured as a POW, died a year later of typhus in a Siberian labor camp, and was buried in an unmarked grave. His final resting place though is where I visited him, in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vashem where a wall bears his name, having been honored posthumously as a Righteous Gentile due to my father’s testimony. I placed four stones on that wall, one for each of my father’s grandchildren, and said Kaddish. From his hospital room a week before he died, my father dictated to me some messages for the grandchildren. As he sat up in bed, you could see that he could see each one of them standing before him.
