Mothers love fuels entrepreneurial spirit Carrigan & Smith for your legal needs; Spencer is growing south in Southwest Center Mall By CHERYL SMITH Mother’s Day is a special time for mothers around the world when they are saluted, honored and showered with gifts, but for two mothers, Margaret Turner Carrigan and Gloria Spencer, they are treated like royalty every day. Attorney Margaret Turner Carrigan’s relationship with her daughter, Shayla Marshall Smith, is heartwarming and would be surprising to many. They are both attorneys, practicing law together in the same office and they live right next door to one another. And there’s more! They are sorority sisters, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (No. Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter), and they even take trips together. It’s not uncommon to see them at legal conferences or sorority conventions. Research has not uncovered another African American mother/ daughter law firm in this state and the two are proud of the work they do at the Carrigan & Smith Law Offices in McKinney, TX., where they specialize in family, SS Disability, child custody, divorce, personal injury, wills and small estates and misdemeanor criminal cases. “I see good people at their worse, said Ms. MARGARET TURNER CARRIGAN AND DAUGHTER, SHAYLA Turner Carrigan, in describing her diverse clientele. Cedar Valley College president retirement reception held Thirteen years ago, when Dr. Jennifer Wimbish set foot on the campus of Cedar Valley College as its new president, increasing enrollment and becoming an integral partner in the community were only two of many goals and challenges she had in mind. During her tenure, Dr. Jennifer Wimbish three early college high schools were created, and Cedar Valley was designated as “First in the World for its chapter of the international academic honorary for two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa, among many other achievements. Those accomplishments and more will be celebrated during a retirement reception for Wimbish on Mon., May 9, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the gymnasium (Building G) on Cedar Valley’s campus, located at 3030 N. Dallas Ave. in Lancaster. Members of the general public, surrounding communities and the Dallas County Community College District family are invited to attend the free event.

their daughter’s teen years or other moments when they longed for a better relationship, both Margaret and Shayla have wonderful stories of their journey. “We’ve always had a loving relationship, said Ms.
Turner Carrigan. “When Shayla was born I rededicated myself to the Lord and asked for help with raising her. It was an easy job, she continued, pointing out that her daughter was a “good kid who didn’t get into trouble. “I was honest with her and expected the same, she added, “I told her ‘break the rules and you get one punishment, but if you lie about it, you get three punishments!’ Fortunately there were no periods of rebellion that strained their relationship. Still young Shayla could never have imagined that she would grow up and enter the same profession as her mom and then also be working in the same office. The married mother of two recalled her desire to become a broadcast journalist, traveling internationally to cover those stories that made careers and won awards. So after high school she was off to one of the country’s premiere journalism schools, the University of Missouri at Columbia. She was on her way. But as usual life happens. She “ended up getting married and having a family. A job offer in journalism didn’t fit in with the family plan, especially with her husband still in college, so she said she recalled a course she really enjoyed, Media Law. Next thing you know she was enrolling in law school at her alma mater. Surprisingly she didn’t choose

Nothing Compares 2 TO BE EQUAL By Marc H. Morial President and CEO National Urban League

“Dearly, beloved. We are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. Electric word “life.” It means forever, and that’s a mighty long time. But I’m here to tell you, there’s something else: the after world. A world of never ending happiness; you can always see the sun, day or night...’Cause in this life, things are much harder than in the after world. In this life you’re on your own. And if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy, punch a higher floor.” - Prince and the Revolution, “Let’s Go Crazy,” Purple Rain, 1984 It was July 4, 2014. The Essence Music Festival was marking its 20th anniversary. The headliner of the annual celebration of African-American music and culture was none other than Prince. I had the privilege of seeing Prince in concert that hot summer Louisiana night - or should I say, I was lucky enough to experience the tour de force and phenomenon, whose sudden and untimely death we mourn today. Prince was a star in every sense of the word. He was a maverick who defined and redefined musical genres; an icon, whose influence could be felt in every in every corner of the globe; an outsider who defied the profit structure and control of the very industry that propelled him to international mega-stardom; and an advocate who seamlessly connected his music to the fight for racial justice, including reminding a Grammy audience that, “Albums still matter. Like books and Black lives, albums still matter - tonight and always.” There was more to Prince than pop masterpieces, provocative lyrics and purple rain. I could employ every word in the dictionary to describe the man, but it would prove easier, and perhaps truer, to say that nothing compared to Prince. And nothing ever will. The son of a bandleader and a singer, Prince Rogers Nelson was a musical prodigy. He began playing piano and writing music while he was in elementary school. He was signed to a local
Minneapolis band while other teenagers were stressing over high school prom dates. The world was formally introduced to the budding musical genius signed to Warner Brothers Records with the R&B infected, falsetto pop standard “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” At the tender age of 21, Warner Bros. granted their then-new artist, Prince, unprecedented autonomy and creative control over his debut album. It would be a freedom he would not enjoy for long. In the 90s, Prince engaged in a very public war with Warner Bros. over control of his music and his name - going to the extreme of scrawling the word “slave” on his cheek and referring to himself as “the Artist Formerly Known as Prince,” or an unpronounceable glyph until he was freed from his contract. Prince would go on to sign with Tidal, the music streaming service part-owned by Jay Z. In a 1996 interview with Rolling Stone, Prince explained, “People think I’m a crazy fool for writing ‘slave’ on my face. But if I can’t do what I want to do, what am I? When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you.” Prince’s fight for control over his material was not about Prince. Like everything Prince has ever done, it was about a greater cause and a greater good that touched the lives of hundreds, thousands or millions. He would also use his fame and his famous voice to become an outspoken critic of racial injustice in our country. After protests over the death of a Black man at the hands of police officers in Baltimore, Prince penned a tribute to Freddie Gray that included the line, “Does anybody hear us pray for Michael Brown or Freddie Gray?” As revealed by Al Sharpton, Prince also sent money to the family of Trayvon Martin after the teen’s shooting death. Van Jones recalled that Prince would only play the 2014 Essence Music Festival if the organizers agreed to host a hackathon of YesWeCode, Jones’ non-profit that encourages urban youth, particularly young Black men and women, to learn how to write code. Prince was as much an advocate as he was an artist. We are saddened at the loss of this musical giant, a man who refused to be defined or confined in any area of his life, this risk-taker, prodigy and genius. But we have his musical legacy to console us, because as Prince reminds us in “1999”: “Life is just a party and parties weren’t meant to last.” May he rest in purple peace.

Celebrating the Heritage of AsianPacific Americans FROM THE CAPITOL By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.
During the month of May our nation celebrates Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian and Pacific Islander Americans’ heritage is an essential part of the American fabric. They are involved in nearly every aspect of the cultural, political, and social life of our nation. Their rich traditions and entrepreneurial spirt have enriched our nation greatly. The acknowledgement of Asian and Pacific Islanders first began during the administration of former President Jimmy Carter who signed a resolution in 1978, acknowledging the contributions made by our fellow Americans. Throughout the country men, women and children of Asian Pacific Islander descent will hold conferences, festivals, worship services and reunions to rekindle memories of their childhoods, and share concerns, ideas and visions about their futures, and that of their children. While a member of Congress, I worked closely with my colleagues that represented districts where there was a strong Asian and Pacific Islanders presence. My Congressional district included large numbers of Asian Americans so I also embraced and became active in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. The organization’s principal concerns were issues that affected Americans of Asian and Pacific Island ancestry. It was born shortly after a meeting that I convened of Asian members in the House.
The organization had legislative and social concerns, and attempted to educate members of Congress about the contributions that Asians and Pacific Islanders made to American life and culture. We worked on issues that affected the economic life of the people we were sworn to serve. Over the years I have worked closely with members of my congressional district whose origins are in Asia and the Pacific Islands. I have found them to be some of the most honest and hardworking people I have ever met. I have traveled to Asia to survey political conditions, and to participate in conferences such as “A World of Women for World Peace,” an annual event that I began 16-years ago to begin peace dialogues for women and their allies. I have found that the vast majority of people have similar objectives, feeding their families, educating their children and preparing for a sustainable retirement. As members of the human family, all of us have a responsibility to be concerned with one another. We also have a responsibility to share in the cultures of one another. It is a great way to enrich our souls, and the minds of our children. I wish the very best of life to all of those whose heritages we celebrate during the month of May. I also express my gratitude for all that they have contributed to this country, and for all that they shall contribute in the future.

occupants resulted in 889 fatalities and 1,854 serious injuries. Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants from being ejected in a crash and increases the chances of surviving by 45 percent. SMITH: Different Rules for Black and White Students By Susan K. Smith George Curry Media Columnist
A representative from the office of Florida State Attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit Angela Corey spoke to a group of African-American clergy from around the country this week, attempting to explain how that office works. The ministers were gathered for a meeting of the African American Ministers Leadership Council (AAMLC), as part of People for the American Way’s division of African American Religious Affairs. Rev. Leslie Malachi is the national director of the group, which boasts a membership of more than 2,200 ministers of all denominations. Corey was the prosecutor who tried George Zimmerman, who was ultimately acquitted of second-degree murder in the death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin. She was also the prosecutor who tried Michael Dunn, accused of shooting and killing Jordan Davis for playing his music too
loud; she failed to get a conviction in the first trial but in a retrial, Dunn was convicted and is now serving time in prison. Prosecutor Mark Caliel was there in the place of “Ms. Corey, as he continually referred to her. He was flanked by the superintendent of Duval County public schools, and by Duval County Sheriff Mike Williams. The sheriff talked about how he understands the importance of law enforcement being a part of the communities that it serves; he requires his officers as well as himself, to “knock on the doors of people in the community, to get to know them, their issues and problems, and thus be less inclined to make snap judgments which might result in tragedy. Nikolai Vitti, the school superintendent, talked about his committed to working with the children in Duval County. If a child is accused of battery there, he or she will be arrested and will begin a relationship with “the system that usually yields nothing but more trials and recidivism. There are some offenses that kids commit, however, that will result in their receiving a “civil citation. Receiving a civil citation gives the child an opportunity to be helped; he or she is not arrested, but is put into a
program that helps them deal with anger management and conflict resolution, among other things. Vitti said there Corey’s office tends to give kids who live in more affluent neighborhoods more “second chances than others. Those kids, said Vitti, receive civil citations for doing the same things as kids in urban areas, only the kids in urban areas end up getting arrested, accused of battery. “My primary concern regarding Angela Corey’s approach has to do with battery, said Vitti. “If a child is accused of battery, he (she) is not eligible to receive a civil citation. In Duval County public schools, there were 58 students who, for the same offenses in other Florida cities, would have received a civil citation. Most of them were AfricanAmerican. If students engaged in similar offenses in other cities can receive civil citations, why can’t they receive them in Jacksonville? What was painfully clear from Caliel’s statements is that Corey and her staff do not buy into the notion that there is disparity in the way kids in Jacksonville Public Schools and kids in other, more affluent areas, are treated. Prosecutor Mark Caliel said his job to investigate each case but to also consider the plight of the victims. But there are no “victims to consider when White kids do the same things that Black kids do that experience a different outcome. Caliel also talked about the need for parents to be
involved, something that frequently does not happen, not because parents do not care, but many times because they cannot take the time off work. There was the ever-present, underlying issue of blaming the kids who end up in “the system for being there. There was no accountability or acknowledgement that White kids often do the same offenses, or worse, than those the African-American kids are accused of, but they get a slap on the wrist, if that, and are allowed to continue their lives. After the session, I asked Caliel if he understood why the tension in the group rose as he talked about the process the State Attorney’s office uses in dealing with Black kids, and he nodded, but still maintained there is no racial problem. He contended that racism does not play into the decisions of who gets arrested and who gets a civic citation. And I could tell by the look on his face and in his eyes, that he thoroughly believed what he was saying. The history of racism and racial discrimination is over, he said. That mindset remains alive and well in this country, and unless and until it changes, we will continue to see the type of injustice that has inspired the Black Lives Matter movement to explode all over this country.
JACKSON:Emanuel isn’t Leading on Police Reform Speaking Truth to Power By Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. President RainbowPUSH Coalition
Chicago is a city on edge. On a recent weekend, 20 people were shot over 13 hours. According to the Chicago Tribune, 1,051 have been shot this year alone, through April 25. One hundred seventyeight have been killed, more than one each day. And while shootings take place across the city, they are concentrated in neighborhoods scarred by deep poverty. At the same time, relations between these most endangered communities and the Chicago Police Department have been fractured. As Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s own Police Accountability Task Force reported, “CPD’s own data gives validity to the widely held belief the police have no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color. It concluded, “The community’s lack of trust in the CPD is justified. The task force detailed more than 100 recommendations for fundamental reform.
GARLAND
JOURNAL Established 2002
These realities cannot be ignored. Without fundamental reform, the CPD will continue to brutalize too many of the people it is pledged to defend. And without a serious initiative to deal with impoverished communities, the CPD will remain in an impossible position, that of an occupying force trying to keep the peace in communities of deepening misery. The mayor just released what he calls his “down payment on the reforms in a 5-page memo. It claims to adopt onethird of the task force recommendations. But this is more spin than substance. The mayor’s office takes credit for reforms that it claims to be “in process of designing and developing or that it has begun to review. It offers tiny steps when giant strides are needed. Among other measures, the task force called for basic structural reforms. First, it recommended the creation of a “dedicated inspector general for public safety, located in the city inspector general’s office, which would “independently audit and monitor CPD and the police oversight system, including for patterns of racial bias. It further called for abolishing the
Cheryl Smith Publisher publisher@garlandjournal.com Advertising Editorial submissions Calendar
Independent Police Review Authority, which it deemed neither independent nor effective. It called instead for a “fully transparent and accountable Civilian Police Investigative Agency whose head would be selected by a community board, not the mayor. Finally, it advocated rewriting the city’s contracts with police unions. Collective bargaining agreements, the task force concluded, “create unnecessary barriers to identifying and addressing police misconduct and “have essentially turned the code of silence into official policy. Emanuel has addressed none of these reforms. Nor has he provided any hint of a bold effort to address Chicago’s distress. He’s suggested he may wait for the conclusion of the Department of Justice review that may take a year or more. This appears to be a strategy of delay, waiting for attention to wane. But Chicago’s distress will get worse, not better. Perhaps the City Council will step up to provide the leadership needed. Two ordinances have been introduced, with dozens of co-sponsors, that would create an independent police auditor with civilian

oversight along the lines suggested by the task force. Emanuel’s response to the report doesn’t approach what is needed. He should not only be championing the task force recommendations; he also should be leading an effort at the national, state and local level for a major initiative on deeply impoverished neighborhoods in Chicago and other major cities. Youth unemployment is at destructive levels. Schools are underfunded and undersupplied. Good jobs are scarce; guns and drugs are readily available. The police need reform. But even a reformed department will have trouble keeping the peace and providing security in neighborhoods deprived of hope. It is time for bold leadership, not foot-dragging and delay. The mayor has used his national profile to lure investment in Chicago’s business districts. Now he should use that energy and visibility to address Chicago’s neglected neighborhoods. That begins with real reform of the police, but it does not end there. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. is founder and president of the Chicagobased Rainbow PUSH Coalition. HALL: The Devil You Know!!
There is nothing like the naked, unfiltered, unwavering, unflappable and unrelenting truth. You know it when you hear it, and when you hear it you know it. It’s like music to your ears. It’s like that earnest sound that rises from the Hammond B-3 organ on Sunday at a Black Baptist Church. The truth of that organ resonates and reverberates. I’ve been disconcerted with the endless half-truths of Republican presidential candidate, Ted Cruz. His thespian-like theatrics had most of us waylaid for a while. We were waylaid until we finally heard a voice of truth. Or at least one voice of truth as it pertains to this shameless scoundrel. After hearing the truth and allowing it to congeal, we fully recognize “HaTed Cruz.” Cruz is a reckless, reprehensible reprobate who schemed his way to become a U.S. Senator during the Tea Party revolt. First, I have to give big ups to Donald J. Trump, because his description of Cruz laid the way for the full revelation. When trash talkin’ Trump turned on Cruz and tarnished him with the tag; “Lyin’ Ted”, he

set the stage. However, a real politician for whom I have more than a smidgen of respect, picked up where Trump left off. When queried for his opinion on “Lyin’ Ted”, former Speaker of the House and town crier John Boehner didn’t mince words. “Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner told an audience at Stanford University. I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.” There it was. His words were like the harmonic honesty of the Hammond B-3 or an improvised jazz riff. Boehner put the melody to measure. His remarks identified the pitch that most of us
thought we heard all along. The former Speaker’s frank assessment of Cruz found favor with political pros and novices alike. He called Ted Lucifer; that nemesis and ne’er-do-well you’ve been preached to about ever since your first days in Sunday school. He said that Ted Cruz was the Devil, Beelzebub, The Prince of Darkness, Mephistopheles, Satan, the Archfiend, Diabulus, the Antichrist and any other dastardly synonym you can dig up from the pits of hell. Donald dubbing him “Lyin Ted” just scratched Cruz’s thinly veiled surface, but Boehner’s drubbing of him as the spawn of Lucifer captured Ted’s essence in mind, mannerism, speech and spirit. Boehner’s laser attack went viral. Turns out Ted Cruz is hated so roundly that even the true worshippers of Satan renounced his brand of evil. “’Having a conservative Christian likened to Lucifer — one who opposes equal rights for same sex couples and promotes the ability to deny services to

any with different values — we Satanists see as besmirching the positive,” the high priest of The Church of Satan, said in a statement.” The Satanists went on to say that Ted Cruz was “everything opposite to what they represent.” Well…Sugar Honey Ice Tea!! Even the purists who claim Satan won’t claim that evil spirit that Ted emits and effuses. Satanists see past that “Jesus freak” persona he perpetrates. For me, Ted Cruz is a far greater threat than Donald Trump. He is megalomaniacal and diabolical. I pray for the Donald because America’s history suggests that anyone as corrosive to our established economic and political systems as he is could become a target. And the way the Secret Service has been functioning under President Obama that could get him hurt. John Boehner scored the music to Ted Cruz’s traveling vaudeville act better than anyone would have ever imagined. I love the church organ, but the organ beating in Ted Cruz’s chest cavity moves to a wicked beat. Ted Cruz probably is the devil and now you know it!!

Last Saturday, President Obama attended his eighth and final White House Correspondents Dinner as president. Below are my favorite Obama zingers from the night: I do apologize - I know I was a little late tonight. I was running on C.P.T. - (laughter) - which stands for “jokes that white people should not make.” (Laughter and applause.) My eighth and final appearance at this unique event. (Laughter.) And I am excited. If this material works well, I’m going to use it at Goldman Sachs next year. (Laughter and applause.) Earn me some serious Tubmans. Next year at this time, someone else will be standing here in this very spot, and it’s anyone’s guess who she will be. But the prospect of leaving the White House is a mixed bag. You might have heard that someone jumped the White House fence last week, but I have to give Secret Service credit - they found Michelle, brought her back, she’s safe back at home now. I love Joe Biden, I really do. And I want to thank him for his friendship, for his counsel, for always giving it to me straight, for not shooting anybody in the face. (Laughter.
We’ve got the bright new face of the Democratic Party here tonight -- Mr. Bernie Sanders! (Applause.) There he is - Bernie! (Applause.) Bernie, you look like a million bucks. (Laughter.) Or to put it in terms you’ll understand, you look like 37,000 donations of 27 dollars each. And then there’s Ted Cruz. Ted had a tough week. He went to Indiana -- Hoosier country -- stood on a basketball court, and called the hoop a “basketball ring.” (Laughter and applause.) What else is in his lexicon? Baseball sticks? Football hats? (Laughter.) But sure, I’m the foreign one. (Laughter and applause.) The Republican establishment is incredulous that he is their most likely nominee - incredulous, shocking. They say Donald lacks the foreign policy experience to be president. But, in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world: Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan. (Laughter and applause.) Comedian Larry Wilmore gave a mixed performance at the White House Correspondent Dinner and was justifiably criticized for closing his stand-up routine with, “So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100: Yo, Barry, you did it, my n---ger. You did it.” The n-word is one of the most obnoxious words in the English language and should never be used - period. And it definitely should not be used when addressing the nation’s first Black president in public or in private.
Many of Wilmore’s jokes simply were not funny. But he did manage to land quite a few on target: Well, welcome to “Negro Night” here at the Washington Hilton, or as Fox News will report, “Two thugs disrupt elegant dinner in D.C.” And not to throw any shade, but Fox News is the highest-rated cable news channel among viewers who have no idea what “shade” means. I think Fox News secretly likes Beyoncé, though. They just renamed “The Kelly File,” “Becky with the good hair.” MSNBC - MSNBC here tonight? No? Which actually now stands for “Missing a Significant Number of Black Correspondents.” Am I wrong? They like fired Melissa Harris-Perry, they canceled Joy Reid, they booted Touré. I heard they put Chris Hayes on probation because they thought he was related to Isaac Hayes. That’s wrong. You know, I should say some of America’s finest Black journalists are here tonight. Don Lemon’s here, too. But to say a little bit about me, so, I am a Black man who replaced a White man who pretended to be a TV newscaster. So, yeah, in that way Lester Holt and I have a lot in common. President’s hair is so white it keeps saying “all lives matter.” All I’m saying is that in less than eight years, Mr. President, you’ve busted two time-honored stereotypes. Black does crack, and apparently once you go black, it
looks like we are going back. Thanks, Ben Carson. Lots of big news this year, the Treasury promised to put Harriet Tubman’s face on the $10 bill, but now we have to wait until 2030 for the $20 bill. Yeah. Man, women haven’t been this deceived by a bill since Cosby [groans]. Donald Trump said that if Hillary Clinton were a man, he didn’t think she’d get 5 percent of the vote. Okay, alright, alright. First of all, if Hillary Clinton were suddenly a man, her biggest problem would be finding a bathroom she’d be allowed to use in North Carolina. And I can’t understand why everyone treats Donald Trump with kid gloves. And then I realized they’re the only gloves that’ll fit his stupid, little baby hands. And this is your last year in office, right, so now your legacy begins. So I wanna talk about what you’re leaving behind, and I don’t mean the Black Jesus in the Lincoln bedroom...No, I’m just saying, make sure you take all of your culturally specific items with you so you can get your security deposit back, Mr. President. Business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza launches Naming Contest
The Jones family opened its press conference with a muchneeded prayer, they said. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson, in his prayer, said the business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza has been good for the community and the City of Dallas and that support for the owners is important. Support is just what Dorothy Jones says is needed as she fights a battle she never thought she would encounter, receiving a cease and desist letter from BlackJack Pizza Enterprises, threatening her business with legal action. The Colorado-based company with over 40 locations in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and Montana says if the Joneses don’t stop using any resemblance to the name they trademarked in 1987--three years before the Jones came on the scene, there would be consequences. A clearly emotional Mrs. Jones talked about how it didn’t seem fair that a name she had used almost three decades was being stripped from her business. As she talked about how she and her son started the company to provide pizza to an area that was overlooked by major chains, Mrs. Jones said she didn’t want to change the name. “I feel like it will hurt my business because people will think that we have sold it,” she said. And that was the dream that son Terry said he had when he first approached her about opening a restaurant that while pizza was the main course, they offered a menu that included burgers, hot wings, beans and cornbread, salads and spaghetti. “We T:5” were providing a service and products to an area that others refused

Young remembers her Lincoln High School days and visits to Black Jack Pizza in Sunny South Dallas. “We always enjoyed coming to Black Jack Pizza as a child and I’m looking forward to continuing the support.” Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce President Wilton Munnings echoed Ms. Young’s comments on the contributions of the business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza. As he praised Mrs. Jones for the positive influence her company has had in South Dallas, Mr. Munnings talked about the work that the Chamber does to help small businesses. “This is National Small Business Week and we’re focusing on key areas to keep businesses strong and vibrant,” he noted. “ We’re working with the Joneses and we will do all we can to support her efforts to keep her business in operation.” Ivy McQuain of the NATIONAL BLACK PR SOCIETY - TEXAS announced the contest to rename the business. “Beginning today, there’s a contest to rename the house that Dorothy Built,’” said Ms. McQuain. THE CONTEST RUNS THROUGH MAY 23, 2016. THE FAMILY WILL PICK THE WINNING NAME AND THAT’S WHERE THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS - Dallas LAW SCHOOL COMES IN.” Representing the Law School. Atty. Cheryl Wattley said that after the contest deadline, “we (students) will do the research to make sure that all the proper paperwork has been filed” to avoid a similar situation as the one the Jones Family is facing now. And other organizations are stepping in. Denita Lacking Quinn of the DFW Black Bloggers says her organization’s members will be writing about this issue. “They will be visiting and sharing their experiences while also spreading the word about the contest.”

A Mother’s Love
her mother’s, UT Law School, where Turner Carrigan was a classmate of former Ambassador Ron Kirk and former Dallas City Councilwoman Vonciel Jones Hill. After passing the bar, Shayla said she ended up practicing family law by accident and also worked in the Attorney General’s office before partnering with her mother. The partners each have their specialties. Daughter’s forte is in the areas of research, writing and technology while mom’s strengths are in arguing cases and handling the books. Shayla’s friends also have bonded with her mother. “A lot of my good friends are really close to my mom,” she said. “She adopts my friends. She’s a motherfigure to them.” Shayla has nothing but kind words for her mother, “My mom has always been a source of inspiration for me. I look up to her a lot because she’s the only person who has consistently been there for me my entire life.” Mom describes her daughter as “having strong morals, Christian, good mom, intelligent, beautiful...” “Sometimes I fuss, but I try to encourage her because sometimes she underestimates herself,” said Ms. Turner Carrigan. “I tell her the Lord has blessed her and to be thankful for those gifts.” And the first gift Shayla is thankful for is her mother! “My mother is brave, bold and tenacious,” she said. “ She taught me to be a Christian and to keep God first. She is a trailblazer and did a lot of things at a time when it wasn’t easy, especially for an African American woman.”
BRINGING R.E.A.L. HAIR TO SOUTH Gloria Spencer knows what it is to blaze trails and overcome obstacles as
an African American woman living in America. She was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 33 years before her retirement following the September 11 tragedy. Her tenacity, faith and support fueled a desire in her son, Larry, to “spread his wings and soar as high as he can go,” she said. Larry is on an ambitious journey and his mom laid the foundation for him to be successful. “My mom is my everything,” he said. “ She paved the way for me to make my own way.” And she helped him at a time when he sunk down to a low point. Larry has a story and a testimony worth sharing. He, like so many other young men, was seduced by the world of violence. There was an unfortunate incident that occurred while he was in high school. “We had guns and one of my friends got ahold of my gun and jammed it. When I picked it up, it went off and shot my friend.” There were so many regrets after that incident, he said, which prompted him to stop drinking, get rid of the guns, stop hanging out and get back in church. The Grand Jury no-bill that kept him out of a trial and possibly jail was a rude awakening for him. Then he had another turning point in his life, the birth of his first child. “I wanted better for my children,” he explained. “I had to pave the way for them just as my mom did for me.” And Ms. Spencer is still there for her only living son. His brother died after battling cancer almost three years ago. She says she is so proud of the work that Larry does today and has been doing for decades. There’s also a commitment to giving back and Larry will be starting fundraising efforts for cancer and for another relative’s non-profit: MASS - Mother’s (Fathers) for the Advancement of Social Systems; the organization founded by the late Joyce Ann Brown, who spent nine years, five months and 24 days in prison for a crime she did not commit. A successful, legitimate entrepreneur, Larry is taking a bold stand in the revitalization efforts of Southwest Center Mall. Amid reports that the Mall would be closing after losing several anchor stores and reports of violence, Larry decided that he wanted to invest in its future by bringing a thriving, upscale business to the Mall. Scheduled for a ribbon-cutting and grand opening on Saturday, May 21, 2016, R.E.A.L. Hair, will introduce a salon, hair boutique, makeup and clothing one stop shop for a high-end clientele that seeks quality products, service and atmosphere.

With high-quality hair selling at a premium, Larry plans to provide the type of experience that will uplift the entire Mall and be of benefit to other surrounding businesses. Now this is a hefty investment but Gloria is not surprised by her son’s efforts because she, like her son remembers a thriving then-Redbird Mall where anyone Black who came to town wanted to visit. “We need revitalization of this area,” she said. “Others are coming in, making money and draining our community. We need something for our community.” Describing her adventurous son, Ms. Spencer said Larry loves people and he loves giving back, which is just how she feels. “We adhere to morals and principles,” she said. “We’re about helping one another. We’re all about the community.” And there’s an accountability factor that Larry is focused on. A graduate of DeSoto High School, his family’s roots are deeply embedded in the Oak Cliff area. There shouldn’t be a need to travel out of your surroundings to get quality products and services. That’s what Larry was thinking when he decided to open R.E.A.L. Hair in Southwest Center Mall, despite other malls courting him for his business. He says he will have some of the top hair stylists in the Metroplex who already boast an impressive clientele. He says everything in the establishment will be top grade. “I am making a commitment and I am encouraging others to join me,” he said. “I want my mother to have quality places where she can shop close to home. I want it safe, with law enforcement and security. I want to see people who care about their business and community working in and supporting the businesses in the Mall.” Fortunately Southwest Center is under new management and Dallas Deputy Mayor ProTem Erik Wilson and Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce President Wilton Munnings are sounding the trumpet for building a safer more vibrant southern Dallas County. There’s also a heavier police presence. “That’s why we’re here,” said Mr. Munnings. “The Chamber has a business assistance center with a trained staff to help small businesses.” When Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings talks about GrowSouth efforts, the Spencers echo his thoughts and say they realize the importance of investing. “I’m making a commitment and my mother is making a commitment,” said Larry. Let’s do this together.”

D/FW MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL SUPPLIES POWERFUL CONNECTIONS TO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN NORTH TEXAS Coming up on May 9 and 10 at the Irving Convention Center, more than 1,200 businesses from the area will participate in the largest regional Business Expo connecting corporations and public sector agencies with certified minorityowned businesses – ACCESS 2016 BUSINESS EXPO. This event is a major contributor to the overall yearly figure in business transactions between Council certified Minority Businesses and corporations. The Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Supplier Development Council (D/FW MSDC) reported $7.1 Billion in Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) revenues in 2015. This year’s ACCESS corporate signature sponsor, Energy Future Holdings (EFH); and Minority Business Enterprise sponsor, TES (Telecom Electric Supply) are a great testimony of how minority certification opens doors to business opportunities by providing powerful connections between large corporations looking for highly competitive suppliers and minority business enterprises with solutions to meet corporate needs. “At Energy Future Holdings, we believe diversity fuels innovation and makes
our business communities stronger. With our headquarters in Dallas, we are committed to the health of the North Texas and national economy by fostering relationships and expanding our network of diverse local suppliers,” shared John Young, EFH’s chief executive officer. “The D/FW MSDC plays a significant role in facilitating our connections to certified Minority Business Enterprises in the area. These businesses continue to demonstrate their value by meeting our supply chain needs with innovative, yet cost effective, solutions.” Fred Moses, Founder and President of TES, stated: “The ACCESS Business Expo is one of the most valuable resources the Council offers its MBE’s to market its companies. There is not another avenue or event that offers minority businesses the opportunity to make the business contacts that are available at ACCESS. ACCESS provides in one setting, over 100 buying entity representatives, specifically at ACCESS to meet certified, capable minority owned businesses. The result: Powerful connections for real results.” ACCESS 2016 will host more than 70 confirmed State of Texas agencies recruited by State Senator Royce West. The attending State Agencies will be conducting On-the-Spot Bid Opportunities. Last year, the State Agencies awarded over $2.6 million in contracts at the two-day event. ACCESS 2016 will also feature an Opportunity Board designed to maximize connections; a Business Solutions Pavilion, offering small business solutions and product demonstrations; and more than 40 major corporations seeking diverse suppliers. True to this year’s ACCESS theme of Supplying Powerful Connections, Margo J. Posey, D/FW MSDC President stated: “We are excited about the growing awareness and continued support in the business community of the value of
LIFESTYLE
diversity in the supply chain. Buying entities understand that minority owned businesses bring a wealth of talent and solutions to the table, as well as provide a way for them to positively impact the economy in our area.” Posey added: “In 2015, 78 North Texas Cities were impacted by D/FW Minority Business Enterprises. Over 70 local Buying Entity Members, procured /contracted business with D/FW MSDC certified MBEs, resulting in $7.1 Billion in reported revenues and 125,600 employment positions by D/FW MSDC MBEs. Growing these numbers by providing business opportunities and creating powerful connections at the ACCESS Business Expo impacts and grows the entire North Texas community.” The two-day Expo features corporate and MBE roundtables and one-onone business matchmaking between corporations, public sector entities, and minority business suppliers looking to discuss immediate and near-term opportunities. Last year 203 one-on-one sessions were held by 33 buyers from 15 buying entities. Additionally 528 attendees participated in 121 round table sessions. The Social Media Experience, a Media Lounge with exclusive interviews for the Council’s YouTube Channel and the Cyber Lounge are additional features of ACCESS. “Each year we continue to challenge ourselves to create multiple opportunities for exhibitors, sponsors and attendees to meet, connect, identify opportunities and conduct real business. If you want to participate in the conversation surrounding ACCESS 2016 in real-time, be sure to follow our Twitter @dfwmsdc and use #ACCESS2016DFW ”, said Posey. Registration and sponsorship information is available at the Council’s website at www.dfwmsdc.com or by calling 214-630-0747.

Please Turn Your Light On Perhaps we should rejoice every now and then about how wonderful a thing it is to be saved. I’m talking about laugh out loud going around with a big grin on your face, look at me kind of joy; not arrogant or pride filled, not smug or egotistical, but rather humbled and confident, relieved and knowing, secure and sure. I mean why not? I find myself at times, so thankful that I finally got it right that it really does take some emotional restraint not to start grabbing and hugging total strangers, let alone folk I care about and those who care about me. The underlying truth that makes this possible is that truth based on the acceptance of self. I am of the belief that you cannot accept Christ in your life until you’ve come to brutal grips with exactly who you are, or were. I know it sounds simple enough and because it does, I think it gets by many people. After all, most of us spend a lifetime trying to please others, impress others, thinking way too much about what others think of us. In so doing, we allow ourselves to empower others to define us in terms of who they think we are or how we should act. The sad reality is we often times try to live up to those expectations only to spend far too much time living down to them. Inevitably we disappoint. We disappoint others and live a life thinking something is wrong with us. The truth is the only ones who matter in this regard are God and us; God because He didn’t make a mistake and us because we were stupid enough to allow someone else’s definition of who we are and what we can become to supersede God’s plan for our existence. That mistake is ours and salvation is the only road to a clear picture of who we are, whose we are and what we are destined to become. Now let me warn you. There is some danger associated with walking around enveloped by the truth of salvation. Truth, as the bible does say, will set you free. But it can hurt. Being enlightened in this way gives you a telescope
into your own soul that will scald you to no end with its intensity. I’ve come to expect to see
Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington glimpses of my past in the light that now keeps me extremely humble and thankful that there’s a God who knows all about me and still loves me in spite of it all. You see I like me now. No, check that. I love me now. Whether you do or not, doesn’t really matter. Salvation has a way of giving you insight into yourself that inoculates you against the ridiculous notion that you’re here to somehow please another person. You see whomever they are can’t compare to a God who loves you, flaws and scars and all. Excuse me but that’s a helluva, no, that’s a heavenly thing. You can take me or leave me. Once the light of salvation goes on, you must accept what you see.
It was you. You were there. Guilty, you did it. But in the light of salvation, your past is used by God to provide testimony to help others know there’s hope for them too. God is just waiting on you to turn the light on and recognize your past is the most valuable part of you. The truth is when the light does come on, those stains you see on your soul, they will burn off the closer you get to the light’s source. It all comes down to that man or woman looking back at you in the mirror. Don’t accept or internalize meaningless criticism. The only opinion that matters is that of the most high. Don’t let others put limits on you and please don’t put limits on yourself. God hasn’t. And therein lies the beauty of salvation’s truth. It ought to bring that grin I was talking about to your face. Turn your light on and let God turn up the heat. It might burn for a minute. But the longer you stay in the light, you will come to understand that the darkness you were in, ain’t got nothing for you anymore. If that’s not worth smiling about, it’s certainly worth shouting about. May God bless and keep you always.

ASK ALMA: Reconnecting with an Old Flame Ask Alma Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@ yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.
Dear Alma, I’m a 60-year-old man, married to the same woman for 33 years. I recently reconnected with my high school girlfriend on Facebook. It now turns out that she will soon be visiting
in my area, and we are planning to meet at a restaurant we used to go to when we were teenagers. It will be in a public place, and the owners know my wife (who won’t be there). This is not a real “date,” but it’s more than a business lunch or meal with casual
friends. My ex-girlfriend is not married, and I’m not likely to leave my wife. My long-term objective is friendship. Obviously, this reunion calls for more than a hearty handshake, but how much more? A hug seems inevitable. But what kind of kiss? A Hollywood-style air kiss? A peck on the cheek? A quick kiss on the lips? Or something longer? I assume we’ll figure it out, but how do I start? Signed, can’t wait Dear can’t wait, Ok, I just slapped you upside the back of your head. Did you feel it? What’s up with you? Are you having a mid-life crisis? Why are you
plotting to jump headfirst into the lake of natural-born fools? You’ve been married for more than 30 years. What an amazing blessing. You’ve both worked hard to maintain and establish this life-long commitment. Now you want to destroy it? Although you didn’t say how the conversation went with your wife, I assume you told her about this reconnect and upcoming lunch, since you’re planning to meet your old girlfriend at a local restaurant where the owners know your wife. Trust me, you’ve hurt your wife’s feelings. And if you didn’t tell her,
when she finds out her feelings will be hurt. This reconnect is wrong on so many levels, and worse, it’s disrespectful to your mate. You are not available to meet your old girlfriend for lunch, breakfast, brunch or dinner. You have nothing to offer her that doesn’t also involve your wife, so don’t try. Forget the kiss. I hope you will rethink this MLC. Stop emailing this woman and cancel the lunch. The love and magic you’ve shared with your wife is far more amazing than what’s over the fence – or what would be sitting across from you at that lunch table. Alma
LADAWN: Reel-ality TV Talk You may have been following the Kelly and Michael saga. Yes, Kelly found out that Michael Strahan, her co-host for the past four years, is leaving to work for GMA full time. She found out in the 11th hour and felt blindsided to say the least. What was shocking was her reaction. She left the studio upset and did not return to work the next day. This became a major news story and caused ABC executives to get nervous. In their mind, the networks reputation was getting damaged - they looked like bad guys breaking up a happy home. Now, this is important because ABC battles the other big networks on a daily basis for viewers and this does not help.
It’s rumored, they offered Strahan a deal he could not resist but swore him to secrecy. By definition that meant Kelly Ripa was kept in the dark. From Kelly’s perspective, she’s been an employee of ABC for 26 years and a major co-host for “Live.” She deserved to know their plans. Instead, ahe was left wondering if this move meant she was not trusted or that her show had a limited future. This column is not about ABC or Kelly’s response. It’s about Michael’s decision. I’ve watched many of the entertainment shows and talk shows since this story hit the airwaves to see their reaction. Andy Cohen, host of “Watch What Happens Live,” and Wendy Williams, host of her own show, both mentioned Strahan’s decision to leave was not smart. Now, he’s one of two hosts and his name is part of the show’s title. But he’s moving to GMA, which has countless hosts. A contributor from CNN appeared
on Access Hollywood to explain that ABC must have offered Strahan the world. They are focused on preparing for the future and know George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts will not always be there. They’ve noticed how popular Strahan has become and they want to leverage that opportunity. Now, I thought about this and I think Strahan made a great move and took a smart risk. Yep, he Strahan could remain as co-host of “Live...” and take home a great paycheck for years to come or he could shake things up and become a true star. Let me break this down for you... “Live...” is a great show but it’s predictable, vanilla and at some point will become forgettable. As the co-host, Strahan is limited to a short scripted conversation at the top of the show followed by celebrity interviews. A few times a year, he gets a chance to let his hair down, but most of the time,
everything is scripted and simple. Plus, he shares the show with another person. I think of Regis Philbin and his long career as a cohost of “Live..” and Kathie Lee, are they household names? No. Did they ever do anything really unique or big as talk show hosts? No. Regis is now retired and makes guest appearances on other shows from time to time; Kathie Lee is a co-host of another show and that’s about all. Let’s go back to Andy Cohen and Wendy Williams. Of course they see “Live...” as a cushy job; they both began their careers interviewing celebrities. They both eventually, created their own brand, but they still interview celebrities. My point is that Strahan, at least in my head, wants something bigger. He’s extremely relevant right now and has a chance to capitalize on that position in the marketplace. This is his chance to create a career that he owns that leads to all types
of opportunities. Movies, sitcoms, his own show, whatever he wants. He could become the Oprah of his time. But, this comes with risk. Even so, if he negotiated a great deal with ABC, he’s protected. I’m sure he’s going nuts right now, and wondering if he made the right decision. Michael, trust your gut and your journey. Do not get distracted by the attention or the scandal. Instead, stay headstrong and focused on the career you want. You may be destined for life that’s bigger than a talk show, bigger than interviewing others. Whatever it is, go for it and enjoy the journey. Two people who took major risks and it paid off come to mind. Oprah Winfrey could have retired and just enjoyed the fruit of her labor after her successful talk show ended. Instead, she reinvented herself into a media mogul Although she experienced a lot of bumps in the road, look at her now.

Ask Pam Question: I often get this question from Medicare beneficiaries on whether they should sign up for Obama Care insurance through the Federal Marketplace Exchange even though they’ve turned age 65, eligible and {or will be} receiving Medicare? Answer: Under Title 1 of the Affordable Care Act aka Obama Care - Americans without insurance coverage are able to choose the insurance coverage that works best for them in a new open, competitive insurance market – the same insurance market that every member of Congress is required to use for their insurance. The insurance exchange will pool buying power and give Americans new affordable choices of private insurance plans that have to compete for their business based on cost and quality.
If you have a Marketplace health plan, you can keep it until your Medicare coverage starts. Then, you can cancel the Marketplace plan without penalty. You have the option of keeping your Marketplace plan – but I don’t recommend doing this because if you’ve been getting premium tax credits or other savings on your health plan that you’ve bought through the Marketplace, these savings will end once your Medicare Part A coverage starts. So you’d have to pay full price for the Marketplace plan. If you believe your situation is unique or complex – or just need more information, I recommend consulting with a Licensed/Certified Health Agent. 2016 ACA /Federal Marketplace Exchange Open Enrollment period: P A M E L A J. D A Y E S is a Licensed & Certified Health Insurance Agency serving North Texas area. She is passionate about learning and gaining knowledge in the area of HealthCare reform.
