National Rifle Association misfires again

As residents of north Texas we are privileged to live in one of the most inviting sections of the country. I am frequently asked by others what it is like to live in the place that we George E. Curry
I am delighted each time that I am asked as I am able to speak about our robust economy, the friendliness of our residents, our abundant open spaces, our worldclass museums, the quality of our institutions of higher learning and the inventiveness of our working class and business communities. One of the things that make us such an exceptional community, I believe, is our public transit system, DART. It transports nearly 230,000 people each day and services a 700-square-mile area. Public transportation is extremely crucial to our residents who travel to and from work, to those who are on outings with their families, and to tourists who are visiting our region and may not have access to automobiles. For these and many other reasons I have been a supporter of DART, and am delighted to have played a supportive role in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s recent decision to award a $120 million direct loan to DART so that it might continue the third phase of its light rail Orange Line project. The Department of Transportation has committed approximately $796 million to DART since 1996. As the highest ranking member of Congress from Texas on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I insist that our region receives sufficient funding to meet its transportation needs. And like most things we begin in Texas, I believe that DART will one day become the premier public transportation system in the country. If you have not used it, take a ride and see for yourself!

When the National Rifle Association finally revealed last week what it was willing to do to help curb gun violence in schools, it fired a blank. “Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said at a socalled news conference in which he refused to take questions. As 20 innocent kids, most of them 6-years-old, and six caring adults were being buried last week, the best idea the NRA had to offer was for us to begin arming teachers with guns. That’s the same feeble, ineffective “answer LaPierre provided five years ago after the Virginia Tech shootings. Instead of making productive suggestions in the aftermath of 26 deaths in Newtown, Conn., LaPierre went on to blame Congress, President Obama, the media, video game manufacturers – everyone but the NRA, which thinks it should be alright for citizens to own an arsenal of automatic weapons. LaPierre failed to note that many schools already have armed guards on site. Columbine High School, for example, had a two armed policemen stationed in the school in 1999, yet 15 people were killed and 23 injured. The NRA executive sought to belittle gun-free school safety zones. But Media Matters, the watchdog group, pointed out: “In fact, primary and secondary schools – where firearms are typically prohibited – are much safer environments for young people than the surrounding

communities, even taking into account horrific school shootings. Since the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics began recording homicides at schools in the 1992-3 school year, the proportion of youth homicides that occurred at school has never exceeded 2 percent of total youth homicides. Suicide was also much more likely to occur away from school. It added, “Even gun advocate Gary Kleck noted in his 1997 book Targeting Guns: Firearms and Their Control that “Both gun carrying and gun violence are thus phenomena almost entirely confined to the world outside schools. No political rant would be complete these days without an attack on President Obama. And when LaPierre fired at the
White House, he was again off target. In his remarks, LaPierre said, “Ladies and gentlemen, there is no national, onesize-fits-all solution to protecting our children. But do know this president zeroed out school emergency planning grants in last year’s budget, and scrapped ‘Secure Our Schools’ policing grants in next year’s budget. What LaPierre neglected to say was the Secure Our Schools policy grants are not the only source of financing school safety initiatives. In fact, the Department of Education has requested nearly $200 million for its Successful, Safe and Health Schools program. The NRA official also took aim at

video games, listing some by name: “Bulletstorm, “Grand Theft Auto, “Mortal Kombat, “Splatterhouse and “Kindergarten Killers. But Max Fisher wrote in the Washington Post, “Looking at the world’s 10 largest video game markets yields no evident, statistical correlation between video game consumption and gun-related killings. While there is no provable link between acts of violence and video games, states with higher gun ownership rates and weak gun laws have the highest rates of gun deaths, according to the Violence Policy Center. It said in one report, “The analysis reveals that the five states with the highest per capita gun death rates were Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, Alabama, and Nevada. Each of these states had a per capita gun death rate far exceeding the national per capita gun death rate of 10.34 per 100,000 for 2007. Each of the top-ranking states has lax gun laws and higher gun ownership rates. “By contrast, states with strong gun laws and low rates of gun ownership had far lower rates of firearm-related death. Ranking last in the nation for gun death was Hawaii, followed by Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center and a native of Newtown, Conn., said the NRA’s plan to arm teachers won’t work. “The NRA plan, which cynically allows for the continued sale of the assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines marketed by its gun industry corporate donors has already been tried, and it did not work, Sugarmann said. He added, “Now is the time to limit the increasingly lethal firepower available to civilians and halt the sale of militarystyle assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The American people understand that – even if the NRA and the gun industry that helps fund it do not.

Spielberg’s “Lincoln” Begs the Question: Where is Fred?
Marc Morial President National Urban League
“If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning.” Frederick Douglass
No doubt many of you will take the opportunity during the holiday break to see the movie “Lincoln,” Steven Spielberg’s much acclaimed dramatization of Abraham Lincoln’s determined and ultimately successful 1865 fight for the passage of the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery. I came away from the movie impressed with its gripping depiction of the legislative maneuvering and horse-trading that Lincoln employed to win passage of the Amendment. But, I am concerned that the movie leaves the false impression that the fight to end slavery was waged solely by white men in Washington and white (as well as a few black) soldiers on the battlefield. What about the brave abolitionists of that time? Where are Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and William Lloyd Garrison?
And most puzzling of all, where is the great African American anti-slavery champion, Frederick Douglass? In a recent New York Times letter, Pulitzer Prize winning historian, Eric Foner, noted this omission in the film by making the point that “Emancipation – like all farreaching political change – resulted from events at all levels of society, including the efforts…of slaves themselves to acquire freedom.” But aside from the presence of some black Civil War soldiers, the few African Americans in Spielberg’s film were cast as admiring and grateful maids and butlers. In criticising the fact that the movie overlooked the important role that free and enslaved blacks played in the abolitionist movement, Civil War historian, Kate Masur
wrote, “Mr. Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ gives us only faithful servants, patiently waiting for the day of Jubilee.” That is not only factually incorrect, it does a disservice to the historic efforts of numerous black and white abolitionists of that time, none more courageous and effective than Frederick Douglas. Born in Talbot County, Maryland in 1818, Frederick Douglass spent the first 21 years of his life as a slave, working variously as a household servant and unskilled laborer. In 1838, he escaped bondage and quickly became one of the most eloquent and forceful abolitionist voices of his day. Self-taught, in 1845 he published his autobiography, “Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,” and in 1847 he launched his anti-slavery newspaper, “The North Star,” in Rochester, New York. At great risk to himself, Douglass recruited black soldiers for the Union Army during the Civil War, influenced Lincoln’s thinking, and even challenged the President’s slow, legalistic walk towards emancipation. Douglass saw the end of slavery as only the beginning of the fight for full economic and political equality, beginning with extending the right to vote to freed slaves. He argued, “What I ask for the Negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice.” Frederick Douglass’ efforts subsequently led to the passage of the 15th Amendment in 1869, guaranteeing African Americans the right to vote. Stephen Spielberg’s “Lincoln” affirms the fact that President Abraham Lincoln played a pivotal role in ending slavery in America, but it egregiously omits the fact that Frederick Douglass and a courageous group of grassroots abolitionists led Lincoln and the nation to this victory. Marc Haydel Morial is one of America’s most visionary and accomplished leaders. As Mayor of New Orleans, he led a dramatic comeback setting the standard for all of America’s cities. On May 15, 2003, Marc H. Morial became President and CEO of the National Urban League.
MALVEAUX: Where is your passion? I was in a cab just the other day when the driver chided me for not knowing football. He was a big Redskins (I call them the Deadskins because they need to change Dr. Julianne Malveaux their name) fan, and was obsessed with RGIII. I must confess that I did not know who RGII was until he informed me and told me that I was culturally deficient because I lived in Washington, DC and did not follow football. I observed his passion as I would poke and probe at a sociological phenomenon. The brother was intense, focused, and annoyed at the fact that somebody, anybody, was not caught up in the football drama. At some point I became silent, to see how long the rant would last. And it lasted through the whole 20 minutes of my ride, through stalled traffic and long lights. The man was on a mission. I understand that folks have to have valves to release the tension of everyday life. Maybe it’s sports, reading, or music. Still, I wonder if we could ever garner these passions for our children, for their needs, for ways that education can build a path to the future.
I’d be overjoyed if a taxi driver told me that he was so excited about education that he could not move. I’d be thrilled if one of them questioned me about education as intensely as he did about football. I could imagine the questions. Why are test scores so low? Why are children not going to college? Why are so many young black men (and women, but men pose a special set of issues) alienated from the system? What can we do to provide job opportunities for them? What if someone had passion for our eating habits? Nearly half of the black population is obese because pork, grease, and artificial snacks are staples of some diets. Why don’t we make healthy living a priority and be as passionate about that as we are about football? Why can’t each one teach one about ways to be healthy? What about housing? As African Americans are being put out of their homes, there have been feeble attempts to modify loans. Those who are working on this have insufficient resources, and just a fraction of those who qualify. Nearly $200 billion
of black wealth has been compromised by foreclosures, yet too many are silent about promises unfulfilled. Shootings in Oregon and Connecticut are heartbreaking manifestations of the violence that pervades in our nation. Anybody with an attitude and a gun can shoot into a crowd and cause major damage. Why have a couple of fools targeted an elementary school in Connecticut leaving dozens dead. Why does the National Rifle Association work so hard to maintain the right to bear arms? Why aren’t more legislators working to limit this so-called right? Why do we continue to leave our population vulnerable to nuts with guns? I’d love to see some passion channeled to this issue? Why are we okay with these massacres? I’m not so angry as the football (baseball, basketball) aficionados, but I am concerned that so much passion is channeled in one direction but not in others. The passion for sports is so rabid that I’ve listened to preachers pray for victory for their teams from their pulpits, never mind that those on the opposing team are God’s children too.
Can a preacher or two not only throw down on education but also provide vehicles for parishioners to get involved in educating our children? Passion and intensity are important elements of our lives. Without passion we fade into the periphery, ground down by the minutia of everyday life. Get kids to school, go to work, come home for dinner, and relax. If that isn’t your pattern, you’ve got one, and the only thing that pulls you out of pattern is passion. There is nothing wrong with a passion for football. Can we channel some of that passion, though, that can transform our world by generating safety, education and job opportunities? That’s the kind of passion that could rock our world! Recognized for her progressive and insightful observations, she is also an economist, author and commentator. A committed activist and civic leader, Dr. Malveaux has held positions in women’s, civil rights, and policy organizations. January 13, 2013 marks three years since the death of Teddy Pendergrass
Something NATURAL
In a candid interview, he talked about spinal cord injuries
By Deborah Long Chambers
Eucalyptus – A Breath of Fresh Air when addressing congestion. Under the direction of a Certified Aromatherapist, eucalyptus may be combined with other essential oils to create an effective synergistic blend to approach physical issues, as well as freshen the home. The essential oil of eucalyptus is surprisingly economical. A small bottle can last a long time even with heavy usage. To improve breathing, place a few drops on a cotton ball and wrap in a tissue keeping it near your nose (e.g. in a shirt pocket) or simply add a few drops to a cup of hot water placed nearby. The aromatic action works almost immediately to open nasal passages.
Whether it is by walking down the aisle of dried flowers in a craft shop, or enjoying the soothing action of a throat lozenge, the aromatic behavior of eucalyptus is refreshing to the senses. Eucalyptus is an extremely versatile plant. Native to Australia, it is mainly cultivated in Brazil and China. The dried leaves were traditionally used in small cloth sachets to perfume linen closets. Dried stems with leaves are often used in vases and baskets alone or in arrangements. The essential oil of eucalyptus has numerous applications. Long used as a remedy for cold and flu symptoms, eucalyptus is soothing to sore throats, boosts the immune system, and reduces the spread of many forms of bacteria. It works especially well on the respiratory system
Eucalyptus is often found in soaps, detergents and perfumes. It is also used in insect repellants and room sprays. It can be used as an addition to the laundry wash cycle for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. A few drops in a spray bottle of water work well misted around the house – particularly on the screens of open windows – to discourage flies. It is also an effective repellant for silverfish and cockroaches. Eucalyptus is one of the most popular of essential oils largely because of its vast range of usage. It should be a part of every basic aromatherapy kit. With proper storage (i.e. away from light and heat), it has a long shelf life - up to two years. The majesty of the plant world extends further than the eye can see. Eucalyptus is literally a breath of fresh air.
Teddy Pendergrass - after the accident, with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and in memoriam
By Cheryl Smith
Remembering Theodore DeReese “Teddy” Pendergrass BA (before accident) was not hard to do. His awesome presence and chart-topping solos: “Close the Door,” “Turn off the Lights,” “Love TKO,” and “Lady” were just a few of the crowd pleasers that I was familiar with, along with hits from his days with the group, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes; including my all-time favorite, “Be For Real.” Mr. Pendergrass was performing for packed houses across the country and around the world, with millions of satisfied fans. Was it really him on the other end of the phone line? And then he told me to call him “Teddy.” I told “Teddy” about one concert I attended when I was in my early 20s. I was the youngest of a group of female relatives, ages 25 to 65, and our group of eight fit in perfectly with the thousands of screaming women at the Florida convention center where he brought his “for women only” show. For this interview, I was prepared to talk about the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, Inc., and spinal cord injuries (SCI), avoiding areas that might be undesirable, but Mr. Pendergrass was very candid when talking about his accident and how he has dealt with life since he became confined to a wheelchair. We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about that March 18 night
when the brakes failed on his 1981 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, crashing and causing minor injuries to the passenger but left Teddy paralyzed from the waist
“Imagine you can’t do for yourself. It is so devastating. A lot of people commit suicide. A lot of people say ‘I can’t handle this.’” down because of a spinal cord injury. One day he was on top of the world, with hype that you could definitely believe, and then he was waking up in the hospital to hear the dreadful news.
We moved from that subject to more cheerful times. I told him that he needed to come to Dallas and perform, because it had been way too long since he had made an appearance in the state. “Sounds like a plan,” he told me, as he laughed and tried to remember the last time he performed in the Big D. “I’d love to come to Dallas.” The thought of Teddy performing again was exciting to me. He acknowledged that many people didn’t know that he was performing again, although not nearly as rigorous a schedule as before the accident. He also worked with singers Whitney Houston and Miles Jaye, while also gaining more Grammy nominations and rave reviews. His laughter was contagious as we recalled all the media hype surrounding his performances and the impact his music had on women, prior to the accident. He found it especially amusing and flattering that the oldest member of my group at the Florida concert had recently celebrated her 91st birthday! Yes, he did love the attention he received. It was attention so extreme that it was par for the course for women to toss their underwear on the stage, scream uncontrollably and profess their love for him. Teddy was riding high. While his life changed drastically, he still had a strong fan base that supported him and especially his See PENDERGRASS, Page 19

Review: Django Unchained - A wild ride!

Django’s wife, Broomhilda, played by Kerry Washington German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) and Django
When I attended the screening of DJANGO UNCHAINED, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Knowing that it was a Quentin Tarantino film set in the 1800’s during the slavery era in America, I knew I would have to brace myself for some pretty brutal violence. Nevertheless, I was anxious to see what the buzz was about. Well, I can honestly say this film was a wild ride and one of the best films I saw in 2012. Written and directed by Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is a fictional, Western story of vengeance and love. Django, played by Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx, is a slave whose freedom is bought by German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), to assist him in tracking down and identifying Django’s former slave owners, the homicidal Brittle brothers. Once Dr. Schultz frees Django, he offers him what appears to be the opportunity of a lifetime — to join him on his bounty hunting mission to kill slave owners for their criminal offenses and get paid for it. Quite naturally,
Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen and Broomhilda
this offer is like symphony orchestra music to Django’s ears but he in turn presents one stipulation — that after he helps Dr. Schultz find these wanted men, Schultz would help Django locate and rescue his wife, Broomhilda, from her current slave plantation. (Django and Broomhilda had previously been separated as punishment for attempting to run away from another slave plantation). The two men agree
and their adventure begins. Before they set out on their first joint mission, Dr. Schultz initiates an extreme makeover of Django, transforming him from an unacculturated, unsure, illiterate slave to a wellgroomed, horseback-riding, sharp shooting bounty hunter with a strong command of the English language and a rather brazen disregard for the status quo in the South. Fast forward through several fatal gun shot wounds and a growing pile of bad guy corpses, and we arrive at the heart of this feature film’s love story. There is absolutely no doubt with the audience that Django loves his wife and will endure anything, regardless of how unspeakable, to be reunited with her. After, Dr. Schultz and Django track Broomhilda to a wicked plantation known as Candyland, they devise a plan to befriend the plantation’s owner, a contemptuous Francophile named Monsieur Calvin Candie, played by Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, to gain access to the plantation and rescue Django’s beloved wife. It is at Candyland where fellow Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson’s butt-kissing, master-pleasing character, Stephen, is introduced. With the help of special effects makeup and a walking cane, we see Jackson on screen as an aged, irascible curmudgeon who we end up hating by the end of the film because of his character’s role in exposing Django and Schultz’s scheme to Candie. Right when the audience is ready to applaud a passionate, emotional reunion between Django and Broomhilda, the script is flipped, literally, and all hell breaks loose. Just as all hope seems lost and the lives of the unlikely duo are at stake, the film’s climax commences with the obligatory, cringe-worthy blood bath that we’ve come to love (or hate depending on your tolerance level for graphic violence) in Tarantino’s work. With a lengthy running time of two hours and 45 minutes, the engaging story provides a couple of last minute twists that lead viewers to what feels like the end of the film but, alas, the story takes you in a different direction before it actually fades to closing credits. However, you will have to see the film for yourself to see how the story ends and whether Django gets his wife back. DJANGO UNCHAINED is an entertaining action/ adventure film that though it is set against the backdrop of slavery in America’s southern states and deals with a very serious atrocity in this nation’s history as it relates to the subhuman treatment of African Americans from the time they were brought against their will to America until President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863, I was able to
watch the film and enjoy it purely as art. Nothing more. Nothing less. And as great films often do, it took me through a range of emotions as there were scenes that made my eyes water, scenes that made me chuckle and scenes that furrowed my brows. I watched the film with an open mind and did not enter the theater with a chip on my shoulder or anger in my heart about slavery and I quite frankly was so enthralled with the parallel storylines about vengeance and true love that I was not focused on how many times the “n” word was spoken, perhaps because I recognize that the reality of that era is that the “n” word WAS used frequently by slave owners. Period. Being ticked off about it is not going to undo history.
Django and Monsieur Candie
As a matter of fact, because of the origins of the “n” word, I am more appalled at the frequent use of the word in modernday films depicting gang violence and Black-on-Black crime than in a period piece such as DJANGO UNCHAINED. By and large, Tarantino’s writing and directing skills in this film are in a word — extraordinary (evident by its recent five Golden Globe nominations) and whether his goal was to simply entertain or to start a conversation about slavery and its effects, he can pat himself on the back and consider his mission accomplished. DJANGO UNCHAINED is rated R for strong graphic violence throughout, a vicious fight, language and some nudity. It opened in theaters across the U.S. on December 25, 2012. A WILD RIDE!

My Son met a girl and married her two weeks later Dear Gwendolyn:
My son is not speaking to me. He has completely distant himself. I have worked for the last twenty-five years two jobs to provide for him. His father left me when he was only two years old. This is the problem: My son dated and lived with a lady for four years, then last year met a girl and married her two weeks later. She is not a nice person, but if my son is happy, I’m happy. My son is angry because I will not keep her children during the day and not even during nights or weekends.. She has four children – the youngest being nine months old. She had never been married. Gwendolyn, I recently retired and do not care to keep the children. She does not work. Why can’t she keep her own children? I intend to enjoy my retirement. I am making reservations to do some traveling and may go on a cruise with some friends. My daughter-in-law thinks I don’t love her children because they are step-grandchildren to me. That is untrue. What should I do? Joan Dear Joan: Ignore her. Give no more thought to your son’s problem. She must have been something else to cause him to marry her within two weeks. Then on the other hand, your son just happened to be the shy, timid fool who came along. After all, no other man married her. I don’t say this because she has children. I make this assumption because she is lazy and was only looking for a provider. Let me tell you this: Retirement is to be enjoyed and after working two jobs, Joan, you definitely need to focus on your happiness. Because she has four children and no income whatsoever, the next issue will be your son wanting to borrow your money to provide for his wife and her children. Do not get into that headache. Keep your money. I find it so amazing how men can date a woman for years, then overnight — marry a stranger.

20th Century Fox’s latest theatrical release, PARENTAL GUIDANCE, tells the story of what happens when old-school grandparents Artie and Diane Decker are entrusted to care for their three grandchildren while the parents are away on business. Written by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, and directed by Andy Flickman, PARENTAL GUIDANCE stars veteran actor/comedian Billy Crystal as Artie Decker, an over-thehill, minor league baseball announcer with dreams of becoming a major league game announcer someday. When Artie suddenly loses his job, he and his wife Diane (played by Bette Midler) decide to take some time off and visit their only daughter, Alice (Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei) and her family in Atlanta. During their visit, their son-in-law
Phil (Tom Everett Scott) receives news that the new smart home product he designed is being recognized at a conference out of town and he invites Alice to join him on the trip, since the two working professionals have not had a grown-up vacation in years. Diane seizes the moment and convinces Alice to let her and her father take care of their three grandchildren while Alice and Phil are out of town. Artie, who is initially not in love with the idea because of what he deems as the impossible demands of his daughter’s type-A personality and high maintenance, modern-day parenting rules, eventually gives in. After a little arm-twisting with both parties, parents and grandparents agree and the fun begins. The film chronicles Artie and Diane’s futile attempts to keep up with Alice’s
rigid schedule and rules for their only grandchildren, Harper, Turner and Barker, only to find themselves exhausted and frustrated. Determined to prove to Alice that she made the right choice leaving the children with them, Artie and Diane take on the challenges of dealing with eldest child and overachiever Harper’s preoccupation with acing an upcoming music audition, concerns about not getting into the right college and an age-appropriate crush on a boy at school; middle child Turner’s speech impairment and youngest son, Barker’s never-ending shenanigans and behavior issues. Intertwined with this main plot is a subplot involving Artie’s undercover efforts to land a sports commentator position with ESPN, which happens to be Alice’s employer. Needless to say, after a series of unfortunate, yet comical mishaps, Artie is ready to call it quits when he finally realizes how much his daughter Alice loves and admires him in spite of their differences in parenting styles, and that in fact Alice would not be the successful
wife, mother and professional she is today if it wasn’t for Artie and Diane’s direction in her life. Overall, PARENTAL GUIDANCE is a fun, warm and fuzzy family film that sheds light on generational differences, parenting and aging. Rated PG, the comedy, which has a running time of a mere hour and 36 minutes, opened in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2012.

Naturally Divine Beauty A new specialty beauty supply store has opened in North Dallas to service the growing number of AfricanAmerican women wearing natural hair. Naturally Divine Beauty invites the public to its grand opening celebration Saturday January 26, 2012 11:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 3556 Forest Lane in Dallas TX. This exciting daylong event will feature product demonstrations, live music and talks by real women who have made a successful transition from chemically treated to natural hair. Participants can learn about new products and styles while enjoying tasty hors d’oeuvres and wine. Audra Cooper opened the store to address the new high demand for products suited for natural hair. “Natural hair is not a fad, it’s a choice,” said Ms. Cooper, the owner of Naturally Divine Beauty. The popularity of natural hairstyles has spawned a crop of specialty beauty parlors throughout the region, and shifted the economic balance of the $185 million black hair-care market. Cooper moved the store to its new location from a kiosk at Grapevine Mills Malls after the space became too small to handle the increased demand for products. The 1,500 square foot store and salon is a beauty boutique filled with carefully selected high-end products made by African-American owned companies popping up to meet the high demands of natural products made specifically for natural hair. The salon offers an array of services including Twist Outs, Creative Cuts, Flat Irons, Blow outs and more! Naturally Divine has over 25 options of natural hair care and beauty products. Most products are sulfatefree, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and free of harsh chemicals. Women with relaxed and naturally textured hair can use the products. Some of the product brands include, Carol’s Daughter, Kinky Curly, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curly Junkie, Mixed Chicks and many more. Cooper has joined a growing number of AfricanAmerican-owned companies catering to natural hair enthusiasts. Companies that once marketed exclusively to relaxed hair such as Proctor and Gamble, Revlon, L’Oreal, etc. are creating new products to coincide with other independent companies that cater exclusively to natural and curly hair textures. L’Oreal Paris plans to build a 513,000 square-foot regional distribution hub in Southern Dallas County. Naturally Divine Beauty has a calendar filled with unique natural hair events that include seminars, natural anniversaries-the celebration of the day you started your natural hair journey, and natural hair meet-ups. “Get RED-E for the Season”

Teddy Pendergrass focused his efforts on SCI education, continued from page 7 efforts to raise money and increase public awareness about spinal cord injuries. It was a long, hard fall and a lot to swallow for the man who seemed to have everything. “Imagine you can’t do for yourself. It is so devastating,” said the man who began singing in the church at the age of 2 1/2. “A lot of people commit suicide. A lot of people say ‘I can’t handle this.’” He was not immune to those same negative feelings. “I’ve had those thoughts,” he recalled, admitting that it would have been so easy to wallow in self-pity. “I asked myself, ‘What do I do now once I realized that I wouldn’t be going back on stage?” To say it was easy would be a gross understatement, he continued, saying the process was long and there were emotional ups and downs. Having a strong base really helped Teddy deal with his new lifestyle. There were people around him who he said never gave up on him. “My managers did not abandon me. They dug in and found ways for me to continue doing many of the things I loved to do,” he said. “I’ve been able to thrive, I have a hell of a support system. I am just one who never gave up.” When he finally accepted his condition, he said he also realized that “life can be lived and lived well.” And while there were some dark days ahead as he faced the reality of his condition, he also came to realize that life can be “beautiful” and that was his

message to anyone living with spinal cord injuries. Noting that over 300,000 Americans have SCI, Teddy said he applauds the efforts made to find a cure but in the meantime he wants to focus on providing a better quality of life for “people with spinal cord injuries.” “There are things I do behind the scenes, using my life as a springboard to do something for future generations,” he said. Unfortunately when children play sports and get hit the wrong way, he said, “its important for me to make sure I sound the horn, so they can be rehabilitated.” “Many are hurt on skateboards, while swimming or they are in car accidents, he pointed out, adding that many find themselves in nursing homes, at young ages; while some are fortunate to be “moving around in society.” “A small percentage are productive,” he continued. “It is so important for society to understand that they are disabled and not unable. Teddy said he was thankful that “a gentleman came to me and offered me a record deal.” People not giving up on him enabled him to deal with a reality unlike the one
he envisioned as he moved from backup singer with the Blue Notes to solo awardw i n n i n g sensation. There are a lot of lessons Teddy hoped to share with the public. The need for compassion was high on
his list. “Sooner or later we will all be disabled or know someone who will be disabled,” he warned, adding that how a disabled person is treated can have a serious impact on their recovery and ability to function. He said if the public treats people with disabilities based on “unsolicited misperceptions,” the outcome is usually always bad. In order to deal with people like him, who are confined to wheelchairs, Teddy offered suggestions that some might consider to be common courtesies. “Don’t talk to other people around us,” he said. “It is dehumanizing to me. I am very direct. I am a human.” As an example, he said people would come up to him and ask the person with him if he needed something. It was offensive, he said, and while he could be very nice, “I can be downright nasty.” He also said when you don’t know what

He wanted his fans to know that despite the tragic accident that altered his life forever, he was doing fine. He said, “I’m ok. Thank goodness I’m thriving.” It was good to hear.
