BATON ROUGE — As shootings continue to plague cities across the country, frustrated citizens are continuing their fight for justice. With each shooting, dashcam and other forms of surveillance footage have been released to ensure complete disclosure. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case with the deadly shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge. After nearly three months, only the cell phone videos filmed by spectators have been released. In addition to the withholding of dashcam footage and other surveillance videos, Baton Rouge police officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II are still on administrative leave. No charges have been brought against the officers and citizens are wondering why. Now, citizens and protesters are demanding answers. Monday, Sept. 26

was declared #BlackOutBR, a day where local citizens wore black clothes and did not work, go to college, or shop. A rally was held at the steps of City Hall calling for information on the Alton Sterling case. After the rally, protesters entered a police reform meeting to hear the committee’s plans and to demand answers and action. “The problem is, with an exception of a few, we don’t see these people in the community, businessman Cleve Dunn Jr. told the committee. “When you look around and you don’t see the community, there should be no meeting.

Rally targets convenience store loiterers, ity. While outward solutions are being rallied for in our legislation and in our job markets we call to action every member of the community to bear the responsibility for making sure that we do not exterminate each other in the meantime.” Gathered across the street from a convenience store in the 2300 block of 2nd Street, speakers at a news conference criticized businesses for what some called encouraging criminal activity resulting in the second shooting in less than a week. “It’s important for us to note that anytime young people hang out on corners, things like this keep happening,” said Thomas Muhammad of the National Black United Front Dallas Chapter. “People claim territory and we’re calling on store owners to tell them, ‘If you’re not shopping, move around.’” Former Dallas City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis echoed the sentiments of many as she discussed the work that was done in the area during her tenure. “We dealt with several stores, making sure they had things to operate and be good neighborhood

stores,” she said, pointing around to different street corners. “The responsibilities have to lie on someone. Every Saturday and Sunday this area, and others in our communities, are filled with people hanging out.” While some are just neighborhood people playing dominoes and having fun, she acknowledged, there are also those who are dealing with drugs, being violent, promoting the criminal element and terrorizing upstanding citizens. “Time is out for this craziness,” she continued. “I shouldn’t have to run again (for re-election) to make sure these things don’t happen. We

must work with Dallas Police Department, work with the community and deal with mental health issues.” Min. Alexander said the problem can and will be fixed pointing out that the rally on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 2302 South Second Avenue, at 6:30p.m. is just the beginning. “We have to fix the problem. This baby (7-year old shooting victim) has called us out here to say enough is enough.” Referencing the coalition gathered for the press conference, Minister Shaheed Muhammad, of the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad’s Mosque

#48, said, “Unity is more powerful than the atomic bomb. We’re assembling 10,000 people and we are going block to block, street to street. We’re going to be hands on in this community.” Extending prayers to the victims and their families, Thomas Glover, president of the Black Police Association of Greater Dallas, in a written statement said, “As an association of professional law enforcement officers, we vigorously oppose the senseless violence that produces victims of all ages. The Black Police Association believes that the preservation of life and the safety of our citizens must outweigh any other agenda. “Stopping this endless chain of violence is a cause that must not be bound by race, gender, religion, or political views, but by the human virtue of doing what is right.” According to Glover, the association “vigorously supports” seeking a solution to the violent crime problems plaguing the city. Following the press conference members of the coalition went across to visit with the store owner

about the activity around the TMA Convenience Store. Ms. Davis informed the worker that his boss should have a sign displayed that will alert police officers that loiterers are not welcome. The worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, but later divulged more information, said that his store was not the problem. He talked about wanting to work with police and the community, noting that he has a good relationship and that “this store has never been robbed in over 30 years.” “I know this community and I have a good relationships with people. I see the problem and it is not this store,” he said, adding that he was frustrated that his store was being targeted. Acknowledging that his store sells primarily beer, cigarettes and chips, he said they also sell a “legal” piece of paraphernalia that is sued to smoke Crack. The admission was enough to send some of the group into an agitated state as they called for a boycott of the store.

But for the politician, poverty must be more than “living in bad neighborhoods where people get shot.â€? Most of America suffers from some form of poverty as described in the preachments of Reverend Damien Durr, a young social justice advocate. Durr advanced that there are “Five spheres of poverty. But as you peruse persistent issues like sexual assault, gay bashing, immigrant abuse and the growing number of White males who commit suicide and turn to meth and heroine in desperation, you realize that America’s poverty rate is close to 50%. Americans in poverty are a problem that the Ignarrogance of Donald Trump cannot begin to address. Oh yeah; and then there was the last “P Wordâ€? subject. These pastors are frustrated. But what this [committee] does is give the people a sense of legitimacy and to be able to move forward with positive change. Wicker said that the group wasn’t charged with coming up with solutions. “That’s not our job. That’s not what we are doing here, said Wicker. “Our charge is to setup an infrastructure so that what you are saying can actually be heard, documented and put into a policy paper that will be submitted as the voice of the community. Protesters presented a list of demands which included a request for changes to be made to city and state flood contracts. The change to contracts would require the cancellation of current contracts in order to include Black-owned firms in renegotiations. The third demand is in reference to police reform. With incidents of alleged injustices resolved with internal investigations, community leaders and local citizens adamantly believe there needs to be a task force in place on state and local law enforcement levels to reform police departments across the city and state. Fake Outrage over Trump’s Comments is Ridiculous MY PERSPECTIVE by Raynard Jackson (NNPA News Wire Columnist)

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, never has so much been said by so many about so little. This feigned outrage at Trump’s private conversation with Access Hollywood reporter Billy Bush is farcical at best, and a big joke at worst. The media, Democrats, and Republicans are equally hypocritical in their response to this leaked tape of Trump’s private conversation with Bush. This latest Trump controversy has yet again given the media another opportunity to put its hypocrisy on full display. First of all, this was a private conversation and yes that does matter. We all say things to our friends in a private conversation that we would not want to have shared, publically. For example, every U.S. president, maybe with the exception of Jimmy Carter, cursed while in the White House and used vulgar language in private. So, whether you use vulgar language in private or not, the point is we all say things in private that we won’t say in public. And yes, even

journalists curse and use foul language. Where was this moral outrage from the Democrats while Bill Clinton was running across the country stroking every female he could find and a few, allegedly, without their consent? Mind you, Clinton paid Paula Jones over $ 800,000 for a sexual harassment suit. So, what did the Democrats do? They rallied around Bill Clinton. They created a series of talking points and fanned out their supporters all over the media propping Clinton up. So, what do these weak-kneed Republicans do? They immediately begin to run from Trump and do all the Democrat’s dirty work for them. This is why we can’t win national elections. Republicans are quick to turn on their own. I wish Republicans would show the same level of outrage towards Obama unleashing the I.R.S on conservative organizations. I wish they would show the same level of outrage over Obama bringing in untold numbers of refugees into the U.S.; I wish they would show the same level of outrage over Obama ignoring congressional demands for documents in their oversight hearings; I wish they would show the same level of outrage over Obama not enforcing our immigration laws. Not one woman has come forward with any evidence that Trump raped or touched them inappropriately. Not one! So then where is this fake moral outrage coming from? This has absolutely nothing to do with substance and everything to do with politics. This

tape provides all the “Never Trumpers the perfect opportunity to sabotage his campaign all under the guise of standing up on principle. Well, I can’t remember the last time this current party stood up for anything based on principle. They have co-signed onto President Obama’s budget busting spending, they allowed him to get away with lying about Obamacare, they have constantly passed omnibus spending bills with all kinds of pork inserted into them; they have allowed President Obama to run rough-shod over them in every area of our foreign policy, just to name a few. This party has fought Trump and his issues more vociferously than they have Obama and anything the Democrats have tried to do. This party has increasingly morphed into a Democratic light party. Just like Republican party leaders are terrified of being called racists by liberals, they are equally as terrified of being called obstructionists by these same liberals. So, these Republicans argue that “we can’t shut down the government over deficit spending or because Obama won’t give Congress relevant records they need for oversight purposes. They are so afraid that the mean ole Democrats will tell the American people that they are blocking legislation because Obama is Black; of course the Democrats have absolutely no evidence to prove this, but the mere threat of the Democrats doing this scares the hell out of these weak Republicans.

Trump is running on a platform that a majority of Americans agree with, but our own party leadership would much rather give the election to Hillary Clinton to prove to liberals that they are not misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, homophobic or any other type of “-phobic that liberals have tried to brand the Republican Party with. We are supposed to be the party of principles. When you are fighting for your principles, you will not always be popular. The Obama Administration is far more corrupt than anything the Nixon Administration could have ever imagined being. The Obama Administration has told more lies lied than the Reagan Administration could have ever conjured up, both domestically and internationally. The Obama Administration has been far more apathetic towards the Black community than any Republican president in the history of our country. Instead of focusing on President Obama’s record our party has chosen to focus on a wellplanned, well-timed leak of an eleven year-old private conversation to prove they have principles. Really? They can’t be serious. Weak people take strong positions on weak issues. CBC Members Join Call for Payday Lending Reform Tar Heel State enacted strong laws years ago to end predatory payday loans. Additionally, many of these CBC members come from states that have failed to enact meaningful payday reform including Alabama, California, Michigan, Missouri, and Texas.

MY PERSPECTIVE By Charlene Crowell

(NNPA Newswire Columnist) Within days of the October 7 deadline for public comment on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s proposed payday rule, 104 Members of Congress from 32 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands together called for strong consumer protections, and an end to both regulatory loopholes and predatory debt traps. Joining the effort were 31 of the current 43 House members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), including its chair, Representative G. K. Butterfield from North Carolina. The

Led by California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, their joint September 28 letter to CFPB Director Richard Cordray was as direct as it was timely. “For years, some small-dollar lenders – offering products such as payday loans, deposit advances, vehicle title loans, and high-cost installment loans – have extracted billions of dollars in abusive fees and high interest rates from the very consumers and communities who can afford it the least,â€? wrote the representatives. “The result has left millions of consumers trapped in an endless cycle of debt‌ The CFPB’s final rule must close every loophole

that is shown to harm consumers. Citing earlier CFPB research on other small dollar loans like car-title, the Congress members noted that 14 states and the District of Columbia have already enacted interest rate caps of 36 percent. In their collective view, federal regulation should complement these state protections. “Though we applaud the CFPB for taking the necessary first steps to address predatory practices in the small-dollar credit market, wrote the members, “we urge you to adopt a final rule with additional protections that will ensure responsible lending. Only a comprehensive federal framework, free of harmful loopholes, can supplement existing state protections and help stop consumers from becoming entrapped. This strong congressional appeal continues the calls for fair lending that has included clergy, consumer advocates, civil rights organizations and others.

For example in late September, Rev. Dr. Cassandra Gould, executive director of Missouri Faith Voices spoke to a September 27 nationwide call with concerned clergy and consumer advocates. “We have to pull the veil off unscrupulous lenders so they stop preying on people in our congregations and communities to make sure the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau puts forward and enforces a strong and effective rule, said Rev. Dr. Gould. Also present at the gathering was Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who encouraged the White House in the aftermath of the housing crisis to create a financial regulator for America’s consumers. “Payday lending is an enormous problem for far too many people, said Warren. “Billions of dollars are flowing out of communities that can least afford it and directly into the pockets of some of the sleaziest lenders in America.

Race and Beyond: Say It Ain’t So, Ruth Bader Ginsburg By Sam Fulwood III (Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress)

Out in the wilds of the Internet exist two sets of memes establishing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a champion of progressive idealism. In one of them, Justice Ginsburg assumes the alter ego of the so-called Notorious R.B.G. This Tumblr fabrication equates the diminutive and eloquent jurist with the robust and bawdy rapper Christopher George Latore Wallace, also known as Biggie, Biggie Smalls, or—as is pertinent to this column—the Notorious B.I.G. In the other, well-trafficked meme, Ginsburg is the shero of feminism, expressing her displeasure at the inability of her male colleagues on the Supreme Court to comprehend a woman’s right to control her body. With nothing more than a compilation of side-eye facial gestures, Ginsburg shows her disdain for mansplaining. As these images went viral, a pop culture icon emerged: There are now t-shirts bearing Ginsburg’s likeness and breathless online articles to prove it. So it is akin to an “Et tu, Brute?” moment for her erstwhile unquestioningly adoring, progressive fans to learn that she harshly criticized the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and a handful of other professional football players and their supporters for refusing to stand for the national anthem prior to the kickoff of their games. During a wide-ranging interview earlier this week with Yahoo News’ Katie Couric, Ginsburg shared her feelings about the football players’ silent protest: “I think it’s really dumb of them,” she said. When asked to elaborate, she added: Would I arrest them for doing it? No. I think

it’s dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think it’s a terrible thing to do, but I wouldn’t lock a person up for doing it. I would point out how ridiculous it seems to me to do such an act…If they want to be stupid, there’s no law that should be preventive. If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents them from that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that. Reactions from her fans were swift and negative. A stoutly progressive friend and colleague of mine shook her head in sadness as she lamented, “It’s so sad. The woman who detests mansplaining is now raceplaining.” A more prominent voice, singer and songwriter Ne-Yo, profanely disagreed with Ginsburg and expressed disappointment about her comments in an interview with the entertainment news website TMZ. “She’s right,” he said in a recorded message about the justice. “There [are] no rules to stop people from being stupid the same way there[are] no rules to stop her from saying the dumb s*** she just said. … I expected better.” Other notable voices challenged the justice, as well. For example, writing for The Nation, Dave Zirin takes Ginsburg to task: I am less struck by the words “dumb,” “stupid,” and “arrogant” than by the words she does

Jamal Bryant’s AME Church joins Colin Kaepernick’s Protest by sitting during

Pastor Jamal Bryant is going above and beyond to show his support for NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick by not only wearing his jersey during a sermon, but also by encouraging his entire congregation to remain seated during the national anthem. Bryant, the pastor of Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland, said that he approves of the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback’s protest after he announced two weeks ago that he plans to sit during every performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” at NFL games to represent “people that are being oppressed.” Bryant shared a photo of himself wearing Kaepernick’s jersey on Instagram before revealing that he and his congregation would be joining the professional athlete’s protest by sitting down while the national anthem was played during the service.

not say: “police,” “racism,” “injustice,” or “death.” There is no reckoning with the reason why so many people feel driven to kneel in protest and raise their fist in the name of black lives. Whether you love or hate the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, his political principles and actions are anything but arrogant. … Instead, he is risking his precarious place in the sports world by choosing this moment in his career to stand up. That’s not arrogance. It’s conviction. To even call Kaepernick “arrogant” sounds much too close to “uppity” for comfort. As painfully disappointing as Ginsburg’s comments are—and they are profoundly upsetting—this is yet again another teachable moment in the country’s ever-evolving struggle to recognize how institutional racism— which is so deeply embedded in the national conscience—cripples even those who are allies in the struggle for equality. Ginsburg is a product of her world. She is an 83-year-old woman who has devoted her life to the law. As Mark Joseph Stern points out in an insightful Slate article, Ginsburg “was never really ‘Notorious RBG.’” Instead, he writes, “Ginsburg’s social and professional cohort is largely limited to an elite circle of friends in the arts, the law, and academia. She is not a rabble-rouser and probably does not know any rabble-rousers.” Thus, as her comments suggest, Ginsburg

believes there is a right and a wrong way to protest, to which those who support Kaepernick’s view take fitful exception. Her thinking on this matter fails to accept that values are more important than tactics and that protest is a legitimate, necessary, and uncomfortable process to wrest change in a society that is more comfortable with the status quo. What this candid peek into the mind of a modern-day liberal icon should tell us is that sometimes even favored allies won’t—or perhaps, can’t—walk the walk in every cause because sometimes they are incapable of seeing the world from where others stand. It’s a good reminder, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted in his famous piece “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”: “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” Ginsburg is no less an ally to progressivism in the wake of her imprudent comments than she was before she made them. Her record on the bench shows her as a stout and outspoken advocate for women, civil rights, and equality. In all likelihood, her opinions to come from the Supreme Court will still affirm progressive causes and issues. It’s just that in this case, it hurts to see her exposed mind because she’s so painfully wrong. Sam Fulwood III is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and Director of the CAP Leadership Institute. His work with the Center’s Progress 2050 project examines the impact of policies on the nation when there will be no clear racial or ethnic majority by the year 2050.

Faith is a verb Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Scripture says you should live your life in such a way that those around you can see the Jesus in you. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16. I know that sounds good. But what does it really mean? The only explanation that works for me is the one that talks about service, i.e. doing something in the name of the Lord. I still believe faith is a verb. We all know no one can live a perfect life. But it shouldn’t take a district attorney’s cross-examination to figure out where a person is coming from. The man who professes to love Jesus shouldn’t be okay with cheating on his wife, be content with a life of crime, or rationalize illicit sex, drugs and satanic rock and roll. If so, then the Lord cannot be your leader, nor Christ your example. We’ve all done it to some degree, but at some point in your supposed walk with God, your behavior, your obedience, your principles and integrity must shine through. Perfection may be impossible, but serious effort is not only possible, it’s mandatory.

You’ve got to give it your best shot each and every day. You can and will fall short, but it shouldn’t be for lack of effort. I forget who said, if you try you might fail. But if you don’t try, you’re guaranteed to fail. Please note that God requires effort. Allow me to testify about what I know to be true. My Bible says the closer we come to Jesus, the more we experience the blessings

This work that I am trying to focus on is recognizing that I must let go and let God use me to uplift another human being. of God. And why wouldn’t we? After all, those are Jesus’ footprints in the snow. The path to righteousness is clear. The goal is simple. Be in right relationship with God. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be given you as well.” Matthew 6:33. This ‘seeking’ to me has always meant working in some capacity. Jesus said, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me.” John 9:4. Now none of us has Jesus’ pedigree, but I am not opposed to working for what I want. I’ve done it all my life. You probably have too. So the important question is how hard are you willing to work knowing that

your very soul is at stake? Just what are you willing to do to let the world know who you are and whose you are? The good news of the gospel makes it clear that this is easy, if not ridiculously easy. Love God and love your neighbor. In this context love is a verb. Do enough so that the Jesus in you meets the Jesus in me. Do something, anything, that another person can’t mistake for anything else but kindness from above. For me, I’m asking God to walk with me in an effort to witness (see this column). I don’t exactly have it down yet. I’m finding that it’s not something you can study. I do know it’s triggered by the recognition that somebody needs to hear, in my case read, a word from God. You should know that at that particular moment, God has chosen you to deliver His Word. So open your mouth and speak. This work that I am trying to focus on is recognizing that I must let go and let God use me to uplift another human being. For those of you who are used to this, you know this is a very humbling experience. But, “…If a man will not work, he shall not eat…And as for you brothers, never tire of doing what is right…” Thessalonians 3:1013. In the vernacular of the day, get up. It’s time to get busy. May God bless and keep you forever.

Girlfriend Just Doesn’t Get It Ask Alma by Alma Gill

Dear Alma, Within my group of friends, I have a female friend who likes a male friend who is also within the group. The female recently joined the group, but the male has been around some time. The female has tried her best game and, to much dismay, has not won over the male friend. The male friend, however, has given every cold shoulder possible. She, unfortunately, is slow to catch on. Others have tried to politely intervene, but the female keeps knocking. It has progressed to the point that the male friend has stopped coming around, and no one in the group is happy. The group now feels the need to address the issue, almost like an intervention. What do you suggest? Leah Hi Leah, There are two ways to handle this situation: Your way (the easy way) or my way (the harder way).

We both know that this woman has been reading too many Cosmo and Essence articles describing the perfect relationship. You know the ones – “How to Make Him Love You in 30 Days.” (I wonder why we never see such articles in a men’s magazine. LOL). I remember back in the day when I would read and scan the information into my memory, hanging on every word. Thank goodness I’m all grown up now and I know better. Here’s what I suggest: Somebody pick up a copy of the book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tucillo, He’s Just Not That Into You. It’s based on an episode of “Sex and the City.” It gives straight up, no-nonsense descriptions of when a man just really doesn’t like you. Some women can be extremely smart about everything in life except man. Some lose all sense of rational thoughts and acceptable behavior. We come up with the best of the best excuses for dealing with a dead-end and or non-existent relationship. I know you know what I’m sayin’. This book offers the best guidance one can receive. Wrap that book in a pretty gift bag with beautiful tissue paper. I mean, go all out. Not in front of everybody, but at the end of the evening, walk her to her car and give it to her. This should take place just between the two of you. Umhm, that would be nice.

Or, you can go Nene on her and say loud and strong, “Girl, stop bothering him. He don’t like you like that, and you’re embarrassing yourself. Leave him alone and act like you got some class!” Bam! Case closed, it’s ova (LMBO). Whew! I get carried away sometimes. Allow me to swerve back over to the path of politeness. Have a one-on-one with your girl and share the following: One of the better qualities about men is that they aren’t that complicated, and we love them for that. Almost always there are no mixed messages, no need to read between the lines. It is what it is, and he’ll tell you if you listen. Stop, rewind, push play and let me say that again: All you have to do is listen. So ladies, stop rearranging his words in your mind to mean what you want him to say. If you push up on him and there’s no response, he’s just not into you. Remind her it’s not the end of the world. It’s just a pebble on her path of life. She needs to touch up her lip gloss and keep it moving. Alma

IN MEMORIAM Thomas Mikal Ford

Fans, family and the Hollywood community are mourning the passing of Tommy Ford. 'Martin' star Thomas Mikal Ford has passed away at age 52. The actor was reportedly recovering from knee surgery when he suffered a ruptured aneurysm and fell into “a state of unconsciousness” on Wednesday afternoon while recovering in an Atlanta hospital, according to TMZ reports. Ford's wife, Gina, confirmed that he was on life support after fellow actor and comedian Anthony Anderson sent out a tweet suggesting that Ford had passed before later deleting it. Actor Martin Lawrence also posted a message on his Instagram after learning of Ford's hospitalization. Other celebrity friends also spoke out to quiet the rumors and ask for prayess on social media as Ford continued to fight for his life. Family members reportedly made the difficult decision to turn off the life support late Wednesday afternoon, as Ford's health continued to decline. He spent his last moments surrounded by love ones. -Essence

Haitians say NO to Red Cross By Lena D ATLANTA BLACK STAR

As the death count after Hurricane Matthew approaches 900 and reports of deadly cholera outbreaks begin to surface, Haitians have sent out desperate pleas for help. Government officials estimate at least 350,000 people needed assistance after the devastating storm. Yet accompanying many requests for aid comes a warning – do not give your money to the American Red Cross (ARC). Trust in the ARC, and in foreign aid more widely, has been badly shaken by a 2015 report that found donations had been squandered. Despite collecting nearly half a billion dol-

PAYDAY,

For several years, payday lending reforms have been a prominent part of the research and advocacy by the Center for Responsible Lending. Among CRL’s key payday loan findings: • Each year, $4 billion in excessive fees are drained from the pockets of payday borrowers; • Over 75 percent of these fees are gener-

lars to provide relief after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and pledging to build 700 permanent homes, the ARC has been accused of only building six. “In the coming days, many of you are going to write and ask me how you can ‘help Haiti’,” one woman said on Twitter after the hurricane, “Do not give to the American Red Cross.” She asked people to give instead to Haitian organizations and requested people not send goods that could be sourced locally. The joint investigation by ProPublica and NPR found rampant mismanagement at the heart of the ARC and charged it with consistent misrepresentation of the success of its projects, particularly in housing. The group has also been implored to hire more Haitians in its highest ranks.

Responding to the report, the American Red Cross said in a statement it was “disappointed, once again, by the lack of balance, context and accuracy in the most recent reporting by ProPublica and NPR.” The allegations against the ARC came amid complaints against the failure of the entire international community to manage the 2010 Haitian disaster. After the earthquake, over $9B was pledged to help the country in its recovery. Yet critics argue that the money was not used so Haiti could be “built back better,” as officials had promised. Instead, an estimated 55,000 Haitians are still living in tents or other makeshift shelters and few advances in disaster planning have been implemented.

ated by consumers who are trapped into debt with 10 or more loans per year; and • Nearly 1 in 4 payday borrowers rely upon public assistance or retirement benefits as a major source of income. “To get it right, the CFPB must base its determination of whether a loan is affordable on whether a borrower has enough income, after the new loan payment, to meet basic needs like food, housing and transportation,” said Mike Calhoun, CRL President. “And the rule must be air tight: We are talking about

an industry as notorious as any for exploiting loopholes in laws aiming to rein them in, and wreaking true financial ruin on working families in the process. “Without meaningful upfront underwriting and strong protections against loan flipping, lenders can trap borrowers in high-cost debt for years on end,” Calhoun concluded.
