He’s additionally not our kind because he denies the existence of racism even when it slaps him in his Black face. During a two-day videotaped interview with Time Magazine in July, he and his wife, who is white, drove
to a local pawn shop in a small town near his South Carolina church. As an aside, I gotta ask why was he going to a pawn shop. I guess Trump must be paying minimum wage to sell- outs. Anyway, they decided to go into that shop even though it had a giant confederate flag waving out front. As they entered, they noticed a pro-Trump poster on the door. Once inside, he inquired about the purchase price of an item on display. But he was told it was no longer for sale. Dejected, he and his wife left and complained that they T:5” felt mistreated because they are an
interracial couple. But in that same interview, he said “In our family, our children are getting an education on how not to see color.” I guess that pawn shop owner missed that class. And so did Trump as well as most cops, prosecutors, judges, and Republicans. Pastor Mark Burns is a fake Kappa, a fake Christian, and a fake Black man. But at least he’s a genuine fraud.

Listening to the political messages of this campaign season, many candidates will have you forget just how deep of a hole this country was in eight years ago. You don’t have to go far to hear someone claim “we have to make America great again” or “we need to bring back our jobs from overseas” or any other numerous claims that suggest America is in worse shape than it was before the election of President Barack Obama. Until every able bodied citizen is able to find a job that can allow them to provide for themselves and their family, we will still have work to do. The facts, however, show that our Nation has come a very long way from the dire straits we were in when Barack Obama was elected. If we rewind the clock back eight years, the economic outlook for the country was very bleak. America was embroiled in “the worst financial crisis in global history, including the Great Depression,” according to former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke. The private sector had lost 4.5 million jobs and nearly $13 trillion1* in household wealth was eliminated in the final year of the Bush presidency. Bush policies pushed the unemployment rate to peak at 10.0%2* by October of 2009. Current political narratives would have your forget just how deep the hole our country was in when President Obama came into office.
There is so much political rhetoric dominating the airwaves that suggests we must “make America great again,” and bring our country back from the brink of disaster. The facts, however, suggest an entirely different narrative. The facts are simple. Under the leadership of President Obama, America has had a historic economic recovery. The economy has added 15.1 million private sector jobs in his past 78 months in office. The facts are that the unemployment rate in America has been cut in half to 4.9% since it peaked in October 20093*. The facts are that the nearly $800 billion American Recovery Reinvestment Act (commonly known as the “stimulus package”) was a critical policy that was able to jumpstart the recovery that our economy has seen over the past six years. As America prepares for a monumental election between two candidates with vastly different visions for America, I ask that you separate facts from rhetorical fiction. The facts are that America has made great strides in the past eight years. Right here in Texas, we have seen the benefits of investments in infrastructure and the recovery of the automobile industry. There is a lot of information to sift through during election season. Citizens throughout Texas and the rest of the country must sort through the rhetoric and campaign ads, to find the facts and the truth. This is part of our civic duty as Americans to make an informed choice on our ballots. Yet one thing must be clear, America never lost its greatness, but in fact, under President Barack Obama, America has remained great and will continue to be great.

SMITH: Say NO to violence and YES to love ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN’S OPINION

This is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One victim of violence is one too many. IWe must continue to call attention to behavior that has led to so many deaths. Males and females must keep their hands under control. Do NOT resort to violence is the message. People have to learn how to get along or get away from one another. In numerous seminars I’ve heard that peo-
ple are not staying on the job, that there’s no loyalty. Gone are the days of people remaining on a job long enough to receive even a 10-year pin, let alone a 25-year watch or 50-year trinket of some type. I’ve also heard similar stories about marriage. People get tired at the first sign of adversity. They get goingwhile the going is good for them. For many to survive five years is a monumental feat. When couples made those vows, they had no idea what they were facing. I’ve heard it gets tough. No shade here. I
just want to shine a spotlight on some special people. This year, I happen to know of five couples who are celebrating signigicant milestones: Paul and Bessie Moody were married 58 years ago, Joseph and Herdercine Nash were married on Valentine’s Day 56 years ago; Ernest and Ruth Wyrick are celebrating 55 years of wedded bliss; and Leon R. and Curtistene McCowan and Frank Eugene and Carole Joycelyn Mayo are celebrating 50! What a joy to hear that there are men and women who worked it out, overcame the obstacles and faced the challenges; all the while growing together to form a solid, spiritual, up-
lifting foundation. These are the type of relationships showcased by Anthem Strong Families and founder of Black Marriage Day and the Wedded Bliss Foundation, Nisa Muhammad. There’s a movement to save the black family and marriage does help. We have to impress upon our youth that healthy relationships are important and healthy marriages help build stronger communitites! Congratulations to the Moodys, Nashs, Wyricks, Mayos and McCowans. May you be blessed with many more years together!

Long before there was a Barney who loved everybody, there was a co-star in the mythical town of Mayberry: Officer Barney Fife. You can Google it if you need to, but what I mean is that Trump has big talk but can’t handle the
walk. Any blow of force and he cries and whines‌like a little bitch. Secretary Clinton’s team carefully studied Trump and baited him with perfection. As if she saw the curtain closing with the 90-minute debate about to end, she blurted out, “Hey you big dumb ass, what about Alicia Machado?â€? He seemed to gasp as if the former Miss Universe might walk into the ring with a sign that read “Round 15.â€? Who could ever have known that the mere mention of Machado’s name would touch off the firestorm that it did? Trump went straight to Twitter, and the Clinton campaign knew he would because they studied his previous fights. Trump has sparred with so many opponents that you may have forgotten. So let me refresh your memory. The New York Times carries a supplemental page that chronicles these Twitter rants and as of late August Trump was up to 258 minor incidents that he trans-
formed into major scuffles. Fox News (FN) is his major hub these days, but he had his run-ins with several of them. Juan Williams a longstanding, if not the only credible Black journalist on the FN plantation made Trump angry. “He (Juan) asked if he could have pictures taken with me. I said fine. He then trashes me on air! You never speak well of me & yet when I saw you at Fox you ran over like a child and wanted a picture� FN’s star anchor, Megan Kelly is not the only one to suffer the wrath of Trump’s tiny thumbs on the Twitter trail. Senator Elizabeth Warren is “Pocahontas,� and Secretary Clinton is “Crooked Hillary,� which is tame compared to what she’s called by the uncircumcised brutes who rush to his race rallies. Former presidential hopeful Jeb Bush was “low energy� and Trump used his technology to proclaim that the 2012
GOP candidate, Mitt Romney “choked like a dog.� Trump doesn’t stop at just two of the three branches of government. Liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg felt his wrath: “An incompetent judge!� “Has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me.� “Resign!� The ultra Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts couldn’t escape being mocked; “My judicial appointments will do the right thing unlike... Roberts.� “He let us down.� Trump talks more smack than an East Coast Rapper trying to make a rep for himself. The problem is that if America is weary of “politics� it is because we are tired of the big talk that never translates to action. The second debate will be coming soon and Clinton will bait this “government subsidized tycoon� again. Trump is like a high school dropout; he has no class! Trump will never release his tax statements so we may never know how much this chump is worth. But the wisdom of my grandmother gives me enough to surmise that Trump’s $2 mouth has gotten him into more trouble than he ever imagined. The Whiny Little Bitch!

Editor’s Note: Recently members of the Southern Methodist University Band decided to kneel during the playing of the national anthem at a football game to focus attention on the violence that Black men especially are being subjected to. An SMU alum wrote a scathing letter condemning the actions of the students. There’s so much to talk about as emotions are varied. In the wake of the vocal stance that professional athlete Colin Kaepernick has taken, calling attention to the hypocrisy of the national anthem and refusing to stand while the song is played; a teacher at North Springs Charter School in George was sent home because she stood with students who were attempting to observe five minutes of silence in support of Black Lives Matter, The Volleyball team at DeSoto High School knelt prior to a game, and rumors began circulating that administrators at Cedar Hill (TX) High School forbade athletes to participate in any form of “disrespect� toward the anthem.

By Devean R. Owens Five brave band students, along with others in the student section, at my alma mater decided to “stand up� for what they believe in at an SMU football game last weekend. They knew going in that they would experience a great deal of backlash but also knew that in the end their courageous act was vital seeing that two unarmed Black men were murdered by police officers earlier that week.
James Hairston ’83 decided to express his first amendment right by voicing his opinion on the issue. What I find ironic is the fact that the students he wants to see removed from the band were expressing their same INALIENABLE first amendment right – free speech. Hairston obviously missed the memo from SMU stating, “The strength of a great university is reflected in its commitment to the broad exchange of ideas and philosophies. SMU respects the diversity of opinions within the University and supports the right of free expression for each member of its campus community.� Becoming a member of a community, club, or organization does not automatically negate your rights as an American citizen. Affiliations are only part of who you are as a person, they do not define you. Hairston’s oped is a prime example of the culture that is SMU. Instead of accepting the position of the university, he decides to use his money and title to threaten the university (not uncommon at SMU) by stating, “We have students, parents, and donors who look at SMU as a place to send their children, invest their re-
sources to help continue to educate students and Alums - proud of their school - who I feel were disrespected by the band members in a public and humiliating fashion.â€? I, as a two time alumna, am not disrespected and certainly not humiliated. I feel great pride and joy that the passion and fire for justice is still alive and well within an atmosphere that continuously tries to extinguish it. I’m not quite sure who gave Hairston the right to speak for all SMU alumni but if I had to guess, it was probably his white male privilege. “These members, as individuals, can exercise their free speech at any time, in their space – not affiliated with SMU at any time. But, during the National Anthem or anytime they are representing SMU, in any capacity, this is unacceptable.â€? Any time you tell someone where, when, and how to express their “free speechâ€?‌it’s not actually free speech, right? As an undergraduate student, when we were protesting blatantly racist and threatening comments on social media, everyone told us it was free speech. Do we not have the same rights? SMU has and continues to breed a culture
of toxic white hegemony that detrimentally affects marginalized students on a daily basis. Any time students begin to speak out against the injustices they encounter on campus, in their organizations, in the residence halls, in the classroom; they are silenced and shut down. This has been a recurring cycle since Black students integrated the university in the ‘60s. The combination of racism and classism suffocates students of color who have just as much right to be there as their white counterparts. As an alumna, I want to see SMU become a more inclusive place for students of color, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, female students, low SES students...these changes can only begin by dismantling the systemic barriers and toxic culture that continues to permeate the Boulevard. When I heard the news regarding the death of Terence Crutcher last week, I once again broke down in tears. To a few, this is just another hashtag that will come and go. To some, it is another story in which the egregious actions of an officer were acceptable, or even necessary. But to so many of us, it is a reminder. It is a reminder that our safety is not guaranteed. It is a reminder as to why so many, ranging from Colin Kaepernick to the five outstanding members of the Mustang band, have taken a knee to stand against injustice. Less than 24 hours into mourning the death of Mr. Crutcher, we hear of the death of Keith Lamont Scott. At this point, it almost feels as if being Black in America has fixated a target on our backs. When five members of the Mustang Band made the brave decision to take a knee, I’m sure they knew the potential for backlash was imminent. The unfortunate reality of this situation is that so many people have either failed to see the true meaning of this silent protest,

or they acknowledge and knowingly ignore it. The fact that Colin Kaepernick took a knee and has been called the N word and had his life threatened, is proof that this problem exists. When the Mustang Band 5 chose to take a knee, and subsequently, people like James Hairston believe they should be removed from the band - and others believe expulsion is due - it is proof that this problem exists. This silent protest, like Black Lives Matter,
trayed, and hurt community. This protest is a peaceful plea for justice.. We, too, are Americans and we are asking our fellow Americans to see our tear-filled eyes, empathize with our pain, and help us in restoring justice. Texas Voters: Get the facts about Voter ID law

By Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos Voting helps determine the future of our cities, counties, state, and nation. As the Texas Secretary of State, I am the state’s chief election officer charged with ensuring all eligible Texans know what they need to do to cast their ballots. My office has undertaken a statewide voter education campaign engaging voters and working to ensure that all qualified voters in Texas understand what they need to bring to the polls in order to vote in ongoing and upcoming elections. If a voter possesses a form of approved photo ID, the voter must use it to vote. Currently, there are seven forms of acceptable photo ID in Texas: •Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) •Texas personal identification card issued by DPS •Texas License to Carry a Handgun issued by DPS
•Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS •U.S. passport •U.S. citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph •U.S. military identification card containing the person’s photograph With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the approved photo ID must be current or have expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place. If the voter has continued access to their acceptable form of photo ID, but, for example, forgets to bring it to the polling place and/or leaves it, for example, at home or in their car, the voter still possesses the acceptable form of photo ID and must use it to vote. If the voter does not possess and cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter has additional options when casting their ballot in person. As provided by court order, if a voter does not possess and is not reasonably able to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by (1) signing a declaration at the polls explaining why the voter is reasonably unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, and (2) providing one of various forms of supporting documen-
Profile Summary and why it is important Here is where we address the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Now that you know you need to have a resume and what it is for. After listing the job title you are applying for, this week I will address the Profile Summary. Some of the most commonly used names is Objective Statement, Summary, Profile Statement, Professional Summary, Executive Summary or Summary of Qualifications. Objective Statements have pretty much gone away and aren’t used anymore. Let’s take a look inside the Profile Summary and why do you have to have it. The Profile Summary is where you connect your personality, with the mission and vision of the company you are applying for along with the position. You will need to look at the job description to see what type of person they are looking to hire. This is where you really let your greatest strengths in this role shine through, and should be highlighted here. You need to also state the number of years of experience; I like to do it this way. If the job description calls for 5 years of experience and you have 7 years of experience; I like to list, the years of experience as 5+ years of experience. I am doing this because once the computer scans your resume, it will highlight it and won’t throw it out. The computer has an applicant tracking system on it and will highlight those words in the job description along with keywords. Thus, the reason for looking at the job description and looking at the mission and vision of the company you are applying to. Once you have the job description, the mission and vision of the company, and your greatest strengths, along with your years of experience, then you are ready to write the Profile Summary. An example of a profile should look like this: Focused and engaged management operations and customer support professional of 5+ years in strategic operations task planning and coordination and customer relations to ensure exceptional delivery of goals and objectives. Proficient and energetic team player with strong ability to strategize and collaborate with multiple management and department teams to maximize operations and business initiatives. Also, voters who (1) have a consistent religious objections to being photographed or (2) do not present one of the seven forms of approved photo ID because of certain natural disasters as declared by the President of the United States or the Texas Governor, may continue apply for a temporary exemption to showing approved photo ID at the polls. In addition, voters age 65 or older, those with a disability, or those who will be out of the county during both early voting and Election Day may vote by mail. The deadline to request a ballot by mail was Oct. 28. The General Election is Nov. 8. Early voting runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4. The last day to register for the election is Oct. 11. I am currently traveling throughout Texas to talk as part of a non-partisan, bilingual voter education campaign called Vote Texas. This campaign seeks to ensure all voters in all communities understand when, where, and how to vote. Vote Texas is reaching, among others, voters in urban and rural communities, senior citizens, first time voters, military members, and minority groups. A voter whose photo identification has been lost, stolen, suspended, revoked or expired more than four years does not possess one of the acceptable forms of photo ID, and, if the voter cannot reasonably obtain a replacement of the identification that was lost, stolen, suspended, revoked or expired or another form of acceptable photo ID, the voter is eligible to present a supporting form of identification, execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration, and, assuming they otherwise qualify, vote a regular ballot. Supporting documentation can be a certified birth certificate (must be an original), a valid voter registration certificate, a copy or original of one of the following: current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and an address. Government documents that include a photo must be original and cannot be copies. If a voter meets these requirements and is otherwise eligible to vote, the voter will be able to cast a regular ballot in the election. Voters with a disability may continue to apply with the county registrar for a permanent exemption to showing approved photo ID (which now may be expired no more than four years) at the polls.
I went to church a while back intent on hearing the message from a particular preacher only to by James A. Washington find him missing in action. The guest minister’s sermon on humility was a stark reminder that it’s all about the message and not necessarily the messenger. Fortunately for me, that was one of the enlightening moments when I came to Christ that oddly enough, was a key principle taught by the preacher I was set on hearing that Sunday. Again, my life now, I don’t believe in chance and coincidences. Humility as preached on this day was to be looked upon with Philippians 2 as the backdrop. That entire chapter is devoted to Paul’s message to the church at Philippi regarding the effort to “imitate Christ’s humility.” As I listened humility went somewhat uncomfortably from a docile concept of passive behavior to a clear fact and demonstration of power and strength rooted in faith. It was made crystal clear that Christ chose to consider Himself at best equal to, if not lesser than His fellow man. That’s you and me. The “ah-ha” moment comes when you recognize this is God we’re talking about. He consciously chose to make himself human in order to serve His divine purpose. The text tells us to “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Now my recollection of Christ says that a pretty good description

of how He looked at His duty is pretty much what got Him killed. I mean has anyone else noticed that the most dangerous, therefore the most powerful and important thing you can do in life is to care about someone else more than you care about yourself? You see this humility thing does indeed have teeth. Paul teaches us that it is our fundamental responsibility as Christians, to be united in our effort to emulate Jesus’ denunciation of status, pride, ego and self. Surely if anyone one a right to be arrogant, it was the living Son of God. Think about it. You try being the walking talking Word and deliberately transform yourself into a mere mortal. Become Christ and die willingly at the hands of men. Now don’t spend too much time on this because you couldn’t do it. Fortunately Paul, as the minister made clear, is not asking you or me to do the impossible. However, he made it plain enough that our Christian goal should be service unto man. Put a lid on what we think of ourselves and prideful independence in favor of a collective interdependence upon each other and the Almighty. Christ died to save us all here in Philippi. Paul tells us that our conduct must be rooted in the following truth. Out of this thing called humility, Christ saved the world. Are we better than Him? Think it through. If you’ve looked down your nose at anyone for any reason, if you really think you’re better than someone else, then you think you’re better than Jesus; who thought Himself no better and even less than you. He died in service to us, you and me. Do something good for someone else today simply because you can. If you don’t get this or refuse to… May God bless and keep you always.

Dear Alma, My stepson, who I adore and have known most of his life, is getting married next summer. I love him and love the girl he is getting married to. Here is my problem. There is bad blood between his mother and me. I tried for years to get along with her and even acted as a buffer between her and my husband on many occasions. I did this to the point of causing myself anxiety because I just wanted everyone to get along so badly. About three or four years ago, after being married to my stepson’s father for almost 17 years, I snapped. I lost my temper with her; there was a very ugly scene that even took place in a courtroom in front of a judge. It was something I will never forget. I haven’t spoken to this woman since. When my stepson visits, he shares comments that she continues to make about me to this day. I don’t engage at all. I will not let him hear me bash his mother in any way. If this was any other woman, I would be out for blood, but I realize that the people who would get hurt are my stepsons, who I love so, I suppress my anger. But back to why I’m writing: How do I attend this wedding with a woman that I know does not hesitate to start fights, regardless of who is around. She will be surrounded by her very large family, and I will basically be there with a small handful of my family members. I will be outnumbered. And did I mention that I am estranged from my husband, too? That I’m not so worried about, but it still causes tension. And, Alma, where do I sit? Jackie B., South Carolina
Sounds like you’ve already lived through one Jerry Springer moment, and you don’t want to participate in another. I don’t blame you, girl; it can suck the life right out of you. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding of your step-son, and congratulations to you for loving him unconditionally. The one-on-one relationship between the two of you is special, and that’s how it should be. Step-parents are an extension of original parents. A relationship with step-children cannot be defined by the relationship you have with the original parent. Once you commit as a step-parent, you commit to that child for life. Now, back to your dilemma. I applaud you for taking the high road, which most times, as you know, is the road less traveled. The high road can be a lonely place…it’s usually not where you find the fist bumps, the I-gotyour-backs or the you-go-girl road signs. Now here’s where my advice gets a little tricky — I want you to stay on that road. It’s great that your step-son is able to include you and wants you to be a part of this most special occasion. But you need to lay back. You know how there are different levels of guests at a wedding? You have the “family” guest, the “really good friends” guest and the “friends from work” guest. For that day, I’d like you to participate as a “friends from work“ guest. I say that because, from what I read in your letter, there’s a chance for Jerry Springer – Round 2 moment, and you certainly don’t want that to happen. I’m a step-mother, so I’m not asking you to do anything I wouldn’t do. I love my step-daughter, TaKisha, with all my heart. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her, so I sympathize with your situation. There was a moment in our lives when I had to take a step back. I took the high road. I took the blame and all that extra madness that comes along

with it. Yes, it broke my heart. Yes, it made me sad, but those are the yield signs along the way on the high road. Be mindful, be guideful (is that a word? LOL). What I’m trying to say is, you can control this. You know the rituals of a wedding. They’re all basically the same. I’d suggest you arrive on time, sit down with five minutes to spare. And since you asked, sit five rows behind his mother. You don’t need to get there early and stand outside with the smokers checking everything out. Take your seat, smile, and shut your mouth. Don’t chime in about anything, not the wedding colors, the bridesmaid dresses, the soloist — nothing. Remember, you’re on the high road. Once the couple exits, smile, smile, hug, hug and go get in your car. Make your way to the reception. Walk in and find your seat. I’m sure they’ve made appropriate arrangement for the reception seating. If not, since you asked, sit on the opposite end of the hall from her. You don’t have to be seen. You don’t have to be all up in the middle of the mix, and you shouldn’t. He has a mother and a father. Both, I’m assuming, will be front and center at the celebration. You’re no longer with his father and you don’t want to throw down with his mother, so step back. Repeat it with me: “I’m taking the high road.” If she heads in your direction with some foolishness, that’s your cue to leave. Please, please don’t engage this woman, no matter what. If tensions run high and things get out of hand, take a deep breath, grit your teeth and keep it moving – down the high road! Alma

IN MEMORIAM SHARON MUHAMMAD Sharon M. Butler was born on November 12, 1942 and passed away on September 27, 2016. Sharon loved and valued her family and treasured her relationships as a sister, mother and grandmother. She provided wisdom, comfort and security for her family. Sharon became a dedicated member of the Nation of Islam where she shouldered many responsibilities as protocol director for the mosque coordinating visits from local, regional and national dignitaries, serving as the M.G.T. Secretary and the Local Representative for Trade and Commerce. She supported the Nation with her time, talents and her beautiful loving and giving spirit. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 11:00 AM at Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home.
BILLY MURKELDOVE Billy Fred Murkeldove was born on November 23, 1943 to the parentage of Ober D. and Clara Dorothy Murkeldove (Mott) in Mexia, Texas. He was educated in Dallas Public Schools, attending Dunbar Elementary and James Madison High School where he excelled in sports, particularly football and track. He was a member of the Madison State Championship Track Team of 1962. He was voted by his teammates as Most Likely to Succeed Athletically. In his years at Madison he formed many strong and long-lasting friendships that continued until his passing. Billy also received an Associate’s Degree from Mountain View College. Most everyone knew him as “Murk.” Murk had many interests outside his professional career including being a 33rd degree Mason, a semi-pro football player for the Dallas Panthers, and an owner, coach and player on the semi-pro football team The Ferris Wheels. He rode his 1956 Harley Davidson chopper with the African Bandits, and served as a community organizer and communication director for that organization in the 1970’s and 80’s. Murk accepted Christ and became a member of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church in Ferris, Texas. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 44 years Bobbie (Scott), three sons – Greg, Keith and Cedric; three grandchildren, Jazmine, Cedric and Dequinton; his mother, Dorothy Murkeldove; brothers, Edward, Bruce, Keith and Jason and a host of in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.

WILLIAM GARTH SR. William Garth Sr., the publisher and chairman of the Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group, died Friday, September 23, 2016 of complications associated with diabetes. He was 78. Garth, who started working at the Citizen Newspaper in 1969 as an advertising sales representative, eventually purchased the Chatham Citizen, South End Citizen and Chicago Weekend in 1980 from former Congressman Gus Savage. The South Suburban and the Hyde Park editions were later added. His publishing did not end there as Garth later founded Garthco Publications, which published PUSH Magazine, a bimonthly national publication. Garth became the first Black person to be elected president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), the state’s largest newspaper association and the office trade organization for Illinois weekly and daily newspapers. Garth was chairman of the Quentis Bernard Garth Foundation, which he founded in memory of his youngest son in 1995. The QBG Foundation provides scholarships to the disenfranchised inner-city youths in the Chicago area. To date, the foundation has helped over 49 students and has disbursed over $1 million in scholarship awards. He was a dedicated activist and leader in the business community, who maintained memberships and positions with several business organizations. He held various professional leadership positions with numerous organizations including being the former president of Midwest Region III of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), board member of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, a lifetime member of the NAACP. Garth was the recipient of numerous local and national awards and honors, including carrying the torch through Chicago during the 2002 Olympics.
