Across the country, since election day, November 11, 2016, there continues to be reports of acts that are deemed racist, hateful, mean-spirited and downright ugly. Even elementary schools, corporate America, college campuses and your neighborhood gas station have not escaped the madness. Whether it’s on the campus of Southern Methodist University, a municipality in West Virginia, or the wonderful world of cyberspace; vitriolic expressions are surfacing more frequently. The behavior went to another level when one U.S. Army veteran was challenged by a restaurant manager. Ernest Walker and his service dog, Barack, who has credentials, went into a Chili’s restaurant on Veteran’s Day to take advantage of the free meal offer that was extended to veterans.

manager, and an apology issued to Mr. Walker. The disturbing act, which was partially caught on video, shows the Cedar Hill Chili’s store manager standing over Mr. Walker and talking in what many called an “unprofessional and “demeaning tone. He then grabbed Mr. Walker’s “to-go box and walked away with the meal. Management has since apologized and a meeting was scheduled with the Walkers and parent company execs of Brinker International. Mrs. Walker says they have received an outpouring of support. But there are still those who spew hatred and as a result of the Walkers’ information becoming public, they have received threats; causing them to temporarily move from their home.

governors run 33 states. President-elect Donald Trump. Incredibly, House Democrats failed to pick up seats in Minnesota, Iowa, Florida, New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania — something no one predicted would happen. Ironically, Trump’s triumphant election night also yielded a record number of African American congressmen (more than 50) who will now serve on Capitol Hill during Trump’s first year in office. There is no doubt that Trump’s victory is a rejection of the presidency of Barack Obama, the first African American president of the U.S. It is also a victory for the so-called “alt-right” wing of the Republican Party that has been a leading incubator of opposition and obstruction to President Obama for the better part of eight years. Clinton lost the key states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and North Carolina by less than two percent of the vote. The much-discussed “lack of enthusiasm” that has plagued the Clinton campaign has been a point of focus by many political observers for months. Though almost no one predicted that Trump would win, the Clinton campaign’s lack of specific and sustained grassroots-level investment in traditional Democratic voters will likely be a chief scapegoat for her loss. Trump’s victory is no doubt a statement of White backlash against the successful programs and policies implemented during President Obama’s tenure. The bottom line is that Trump’s victory inauguration on January 20, 2017, African American to control the White House and open the door to a decidedly different type of president who has not detailed any specific and clear agenda. IN MEMORIAM Trailblazing journalist Gwen Ifill will be remembered at a pair of events this weekend The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) mourns the loss of longtime member Gwen Ifill, co-anchor of PBS’ NewsHour and moderator and managing editor of Washington Week with Gwen Ifill. “I am saddened to hear of Gwen Ifill’s passing. Gwen was a transformative voice among journalists. Her professionalism and poise, coupled with an innate doggedness to report the story, reverberated throughout the industry,” NABJ President Sarah Glover said. “Gwen covered politics and the presidential race with class, wisdom and insight, separating her from the pack.” Ifill, 61, joined PBS in 1999, reporting on politics for NewsHour and moderating Washington Week. In 2013 she was named co-anchor of PBS’ flagship evening news program along with Judy Woodruff.

She was one of the most successful journalists to make the transition from print to television. Earlier in her career, she reported for The Baltimore Evening Sun and The Boston Herald American. Later she was a local and national political reporter for TheWashington Post. She went on to hold one of the most respected jobs in the industry as a White House correspondent for The New York Times. When she made the transition to television, she became the chief congressional and political correspondent for NBC News in 1994. “Gwen was the platinum standard for political journalists and she was such an inspiration to African-American women in the business,” said Washington Post staff writer and former NABJ President Vanessa Williams. “She was

a tough, smart reporter, with a warm, generous spirit who never hesitated to help, financially and with her time and talents, when asked, whether by NABJ or by a student who approached her for a few words of advice and a selfie.” Respected throughout the industry, Ifill co-moderated one of the presidential debates between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders earlier this year, and moderated the 2004 vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards, and the 2008 debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. An honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Ifill was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame in 2012. A lifelong member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Ifill is the sister of Presiding Elder Rev. Earle Ifill, president of the Connectional Presiding Elder's Council, and Presiding Elder of the Atlanta East District-Atlanta North Georgia Conference of the AME Church's Sixth Episcopal District. Community Tributes: Friday, November 18, 2016 6 PM - 10 PM Family, friends and colleagues will gather at Metropolitan AME Church for community tributes to Ifill. The Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Braxton, Presiding Elder of the Potomac District, Washington Conference and a former pastor of Metropolitan, will preside over the tributes. Service of Celebration: Saturday, November 19, 2016 11 AM The Rt. Rev. William P. DeVeaux, retired AME Church Bishop and a former pastor of Metropolitan, will preside. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to establish a Memorial Scholarship fund at Metropolitan AME Church. Checks should be made payable to: Metropolitan AME Church, memo line: "In memory of Gwen Ifill." Mail to: Metropolitan A.M.E. Church 1518 M Street, NW Washington, DC 20005 or Rev. Earle Ifill, P. O. CBC calls upon Uber and Lyft to Address Reports of Racial Discrimination A recent National Bureau of Economic Research

report

indicates “significant evidence of racial discrimination” against African American riders – particularly black men – using ride- sharing services WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) call upon rideshare service companies, Uber and Lyft, to address reports of racial discrimination following a study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). “We are concerned with findings from the NBER study that show evidence of discrimination against African American riders attempting to use ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft as a means of transportation,” said Chairman Butterfield. “The CBC urges the leadership of these ride-sharing companies to address the issues of racism and discrimination found while using their platforms and implement solutions that work for all customers to ensure fairness and equity in the services they provide.” “As ride-sharing and the broader sharing economy continue to reduce transportation costs and improve access, we must ensure that these gains are seen by all communities, not just a handful. Anything

else is simply unacceptable,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee, co-chair of the Congressional Black Caucus’s TECH2020 Initiative. “As tech companies continue to innovate the future, we look forward to working with them to implement measures that ensure access, equality and fairness for all.” CBC Chairman Butterfield, Reps. Lee, Emmanuel Cleaver (MO-05), and Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) are members of the CBC Diversity Task Force and CBC TECH2020 and sent a letter to Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and a letter to Lyft CEO Logan Green addressing their concerns following the NBER report. The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) founded TECH2020 in 2015 to bring together the best minds in the tech, non-profit, education, and public sectors to chart a path forward to increase African American diversity and inclusion at all levels of the technology industry. In addition to calling for full representation of African Americans in the tech sector, TECH2020 is also committed to ensuring African Americans and communities of color are not discriminated as end-users of technology products.

HALL: We Can’t Stand Trump! Quit Playin’ by Vincent L. Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.

I love Black people, but I can’t stand Niggas!! - Chris Rock’s 1996 HBO Special: “Bring the Pain.â€? That line brought laughter to rural and urban America. Black folks felt Chris. So conversely, let’s use Rock’s juxtaposition to help everyone discern how most Black folk feel about Donald Trump. With all of Trump’s crassness let me say, I love Rednecks‌But I can’t stand a Cracker! First, understand that Cracker is not a common pejorative Blacks use. Unfortunately most minorities and some White folk can’t separate Crackerism from Redneck tendencies. My Redneck friends are just country; like a lot of my own family, but a bona fide Cracker is dangerous. For some etymology about “Cracker,â€? I went to the most trustworthy ethnic internet source‌the Urban Dictionary, which defined the term as: “A noun for White slave drivers who would “crackâ€? the whip. Cracker originated as an old British insult: “Cracked brain.â€? Both terms were crafted and promulgated by White elites. The Cracker’s only salvation was that he was better than

“Massa’sâ€? Niggers. Millions of Whites, urban and rural, count their color a privilege and their homogeneous gatherings preferable to racial and cultural mixing. This Klan considers Mexicans as harmful to their future success as the Africans whom their forbearers attacked after Reconstruction. America’s construction and agricultural industries beckoned Brown brothers to run for the border. Nobody complains about corporations who pay illegal and substandard salaries that result in mega-profits and overall wage reductions. There’s an excellent book that describes the psyche of White Americans who are mostly rural and wallowing in regret. In his book, “Hillbilly Elegy;â€? writer J. D. Vance unearths their base emotions. “Barack Obama strikes at the heart of our deepest insecurities. He is a good father while many of us aren’t. He wears suits to his job while we wear overalls, if we’re lucky enough to have a job at all. His wife tells us that we shouldn’t be feeding our children certain foods, and we hate her for it—not because we think she’s wrong but because we know she’s right.â€?Â

What separates the successful from the unsuccessful are the expectations that they had for their own lives. Yet the message of the “Right is increasingly: “It’s not your fault that you’re a loser; it’s the government’s fault. When you fuse this warped logic with the reverberating Fox News/GOP echo chamber, Trump’s Nationalism sounds promising. These subliminal insecurities, coupled with the fallacy that government only works for Blacks, Mexicans, Jews, immigrants, Muslims and the LGBTQ, create a cross-eyed category of xenophobia. Donald Trump doubled down on those fears: “This is your last chance. Trump respondents aren’t dumb, they made a sober choice. Trump made the “last call for White privilege and dominance and got an overwhelming response. The “Great America where a White man could thrive without a college degree has vanished. White men held a monopoly on police, fire and public safety positions. They sequestered 90% of the secure, high paying jobs with public utility companies, prized apprenticeships and

the post office/government jobs sector. Affirmative Action programs for women and minorities cut deeply into their racially bequeathed set asides. A growing number of those experienced in mining and manufacturing aren’t prepared for this global, Green economy. They believe they deserve higher wages and better opportunities than their female and minority counterparts doing the same work. Technology, environmental concerns and conglomerates like Wal-Mart and Home Depot sopped up rural jobs and slaughtered small businesses. The problem with the White underclass is their inability to view their plight vertically rather than horizontally. America doesn’t need Trumpism, it needs a bloodless, diverse uprising like “Bacon’s Rebellion.â€? Class and color are responsible for America’s disparities in income and wealth. Rednecks are cool. I grew up on “Hee Haw.â€? I can Chicken Dance to Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood; but Ted Nugent can “Kiss my grits.â€? And Donald Trump will get the same love from me that he showed Obama‌none!! Channeling Richard Pryor in his 1976 hit, “Bicentennial Niggerâ€?: Y’all probably forgot what Trump did, but I ain’t gon’ never forget it. For a lot of us 9/11 was a tragedy, but 11/9, the morning after, felt equally sickening! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

Social protest is fundamentally patriotic EDITOR’S NOTE: In the wake of the numerous protests staged since the presidential election on November 8, 2016, we felt this message from NUL President Marc Morial is so very appropriate as our country determines where do we go from here.

“Few are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of the colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Each time a person stands up for an idea, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, (s)he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F. Kennedy

And while I wholeheartedly share Kaepernick’s despair over excessive force and the failure to hold police accountable, but I would support his protest even if I did not. Despite the outrage Kaepernick’s protest has raised, he has ignited a movement of sorts. Since Kaepernick since first declined refused to stand in late August, 22 NFL players have joined his protest, as have athletes in high schools, youth leagues, and colleges all across the country. It’s interesting to note that, while no white NFL player has yet joined the protest, many of the high school and college students protesting are white. Young people have the power to change the future, and it is encouraging that their eyes are open to the racism and injustice many of their elders seem unable to see. It is not merely Kaepernick’s right to register his discontent with the status quo, some would argue it is a moral imperative. This year’s participants will also attend the National Association of Black Journalists’ Regional Conference, which will be held in Dallas in March, 2017.  The program, which emulates one started by George Curry, Gerald Boyd and other members of the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists in St. Louis, was started by then-Dallas Morning News editor Rochelle Riley and has graduated students who have gone on to anchor newscasts, edit newspapers, open public relations firms and produce radio shows.   Mr. Curry, who usually visits the Dallas workshop students annually to conduct his “basic training,â€? died from heart-related issues in August 2016. Mr. Boyd died of lung cancer in 2006. “We’re excited about continuing the tradition that was started almost 30 years ago,â€? said Eva Coleman, one of the instructors for the program. “I am looking forward to working with students this year.â€? I wish a program like this one had been around when I was a teenager, or ever fresh out of college. To meet so many in the industry and spend time with them, well, that was not happening where I was. The program is also rewarding for the professionals who come back year after year. We get a chance to share our experiences and hopefully help others navigate through some very challenging circumstances. I tell the students that they may not want to be journalists, BUT, if they are successful in life, at some point someone is going to stick a microphone in their face. Obama steadied our nation in ‘interesting times’

SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR

“May you live in interesting times.” This curse, attributed tenuously to the Chinese, bespeaks a preference for order over change. We now live in interesting times and Americans are hungering for change. Yet, surprisingly, President Obama enjoys increasing popularity as he heads into the final days of his presidency. Why is the president the most popular politician in America (outside of Bernie Sanders)? As he put it, to be elected with popular majorities twice with the name Barack Hussein Obama, something has to be going right. And something has. He inherited an economy in free fall, losing hundreds of thousands of jobs a month. Wall Street was on the verge of collapse. The auto companies were about to close their doors. Bush left an annual budget deficit soaring above $1 trillion. Millions were at risk of losing their homes, and millions more were losing their shirts as their homes went “underwater” — worth less than the debt owed on them. The U.S. had suffered the worst foreign policy debacle since Vietnam in Iraq. The nation had been shamed as it watched Americans left to suffer after Katrina hit New Orleans. Obama was elected because he represented change and hope. He passed the largest stimulus plan in history — and

staunched the free fall in jobs. He saved the financial system and began putting sensible regulations back on Wall Street. He rescued the auto industry that has now enjoyed its best years in history. He revived competence in government. He passed comprehensive health care reform — a flawed compromise plan but one that as provided health insurance to 20 million Americans. He raised

He suffered insult and obstruction with patience and dignity. As he would be the first to admit, none of this is sufficient. Our politics remain polluted by big money. Our economy is still rigged to favor the few. Our trade deficit remains extreme. The banks are still too big to fail. Workers still don’t capture a fair share of the profits and productivity they help to produce. The tax evasions of the cor-

The results are apparent. The deficit has been more than halved. The recovery has been slow and halting, but we’ve enjoyed private sector job growth for a record number of consecutive months. And now, with unemployment down around 5 percent, workers are starting to be in demand and wages have just begun to inch upward. taxes on the rich and lowered them on the working poor. He pushed a reactionary Congress to begin addressing the real and present danger of catastrophic climate change. The results are apparent. The deficit has been more than halved. The recovery has been slow and halting, but we’ve enjoyed private sector job growth for a record number of consecutive months. And now, with unemployment down around 5 percent, workers are starting to be in demand and wages have just begun to inch upward. The president has governed with grace. His rhetoric informed and lifted us. His family provided admired role models.

Skills Ask Vanessa addresses the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Let’s continue in the vain that I’m in and go to the next section. I’m talking about Competencies or Key Skills. But what does “key skills” mean and how many should you list? An effective resume usually looks at three different key skills: 1) Job Specific Skills, 2) Transferable Skills, and 3) Adaptive Skills 1) Job Specific Skills Job specific skills are the obvious choice for you to include in the Key Skills section. They are skills gained directly from doing a certain job currently or in the past. They are skills gained directly from doing a certain job currently or in the past. For example, the job specific skills of a translator would be the daily output of translated words per day in a specific language, etc. 2) Transferable Skills Transferable skills are skills you gained in one profession that are also beneficial in other job fields. For example, presentation skills, time management skills, and customer service skills are all things which “transfer” well between multiple positions. 3) Adaptive Skills

Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

The closest person in the world is responsible for this one. It’s all about praying and meditating in the morning. I have watched a personal transformation right before my very eyes. I’ve watched as the quest for the habitual has become the reality of ritual, so much so, that it’s something I am trying to emulate. As a concept, it’s actually pretty easy to do. In the morning, I am not particularly in need of anything, but I understand now that calling upon the Lord is an act of spiritual clarification. From evening prayer to dawn’s affirmation of God’s power, I have definitely taken this time as much for granted as anyone. After some Morning Prayer practice, it’s becoming apparent that I need to thank God for seeing me through the night. I ask Him to order my steps, guide my thoughts and allow me to do something during the course of the day to give indication of a deep appreciation for allowing me to wake up. If you allow yourself to concentrate on what God has done for you on any given day, then it becomes obvious that He is indeed here and working wonders on your behalf. If you do not believe, try this. At the end of today, take a moment and reflect on those things that you can think of that prove God was with you all day. Start with this morning, because you really didn’t have to wake up. If you hadn’t noticed, some people didn’t. If you drove, flew, took a cab somewhere and arrived

My mother-in-law is highly anxious.

As a rule of thumb, you should list job posting She frequently tells my husband and relevant skills that make you look like the perfect match for the position. Don’t make them overly me (late 20s) to be careful, and she begs long. No one likes to read long chunks of text or an us never to do anything that will bring us harm. endless list of bullet points. She recently emailed my husband’s best So, now that you know the three kinds of skills. Go friend to be careful during a party, begfor it and try it out! safely, you might want to give God a little credit for your being accident free. You might have even passed one on your way. Can you remember seeing anyone in need of food, clothing, a few dollars, maybe a bath? But it wasn’t you? All “natural disasters” on this day missed your house. No floods? No tornadoes? No

God’s Hand is everywhere in your life, if you just stop being busy and take a good look. I promise you if you just slow down a bit, you’ll see God’s presence time and again in your life; that is, if you can see past your ego or maybe it’s your never thought about it attitude. hurricanes? No earthquakes? While I’m at it, how’s your family? Are your kids healthy? Are they simply alive and still breathing today? Is someone you know under intense pressure, emotionally, financially or physically? Did you get called about a now deceased dear friend, colleague or relative? Can you begin to see where I’m coming from? God’s Hand is everywhere in your life, if you just stop being busy and take a good look. I promise you if you just slow down a bit, you’ll see God’s presence time and again in your life; that is, if you can see past your ego or maybe it’s your never thought about it attitude. Once you begin to realize that God is present all the time, then, prayer easily and

rapidly becomes praise. I mean once you recognize the real possibility that God held “my” hand today, then it stands to reason that a genuine thank you is in order. So now out of any sleep I’m awakening from comes a hand palms open with a praise that goes something like this: ‘Thank you Father God for seeing me through the night. Stay with me and remind me during the course of this day of your infinite blessings bestowed upon me. Let me do something. Let me say something today to make you proud and show you my appreciation of your giving me the time and opportunity to demonstrate who I am and whose I am to the world.’ The words might change from time to time, but the intent is the same. I hope to no longer take my consciousness for granted. There’s a reason my eyes were opened and I must acknowledge I had nothing to do with it. As such, I think it prudent to acknowledge the One responsible and look for His purpose after that. The next step for me then is to try and maintain a consistent spiritual posture. I know it’s not easy. The world will test you. But since God was gracious enough to give me the day, the least I can do is act like I know who the day belongs to. From “goodnight” in the evening to “hello” in the morning gives all of us a real opportunity to understand the simple gift of life. That time between sleep and awakening is worth praising God for. Kind of gives new meaning to that “joy comes in the morning” thing. May God bless and keep you always.

James

At first sight, adaptive skills are pretty similar to transferable skills. They are however even more general than transferable skills. A good example of an adaptive skill would be one’s ability to work “in- Dear Alma, dependently” or one’s level of “reliability.” How many should you list?

porations and rich reach grow ever more obscene. People of color were the biggest victims of Wall Street’s housing frauds, with many yet to recover. The racial wealth gap keeps growing. Workers — white, people of color, the young and women — all struggle against the odds. Stunningly, the life spans of white male workers are declining, as drugs, despair, sickness and suicide take an increasing toll. The U.S. is still mired in wars without victory across the Middle East. We still invest too much in making smart bombs and too little in developing smart children. The climate grows more dangerous as

global warming accelerates. The president who hoped to bring us together instead was hit by the bitter racial enmities that still divide us. Now we’re nearing the end of a presidential campaign marked more by scandal than by substance, featuring more insults than ideas. Donald Trump captured the Republican nomination by stoking fear and anger. Both candidates have been plagued by scandals, real and invented. Contradictions result. The country hungers for a change in course but is fearful about what comes next. The two candidates for the presidency offering change are looked on with unprecedented disfavor, while the incumbent president enjoys rising popularity. President Obama has suggested that a president is something like a sprinter in a relay race. No one racer can determine the outcome. Your job is to run your part of the race as well as you can — and then hand on the baton to the next. It’s more complicated than that, of course. The best presidents change the direction of the race to insure that their successors have the wind at their backs. One thing is clear today. Barack Hussein Obama came to office facing harsh economic and political tempests. And he will leave office handing the baton to a successor with the wind at her or his back. More and more Americans are beginning to appreciate that now. And we will appreciate it even more in retrospect.

ging him not to let anything happen because my husband is all she has left. She experienced the loss of her daughter 11 years ago. I don’t know how to prevent her anxiety from affecting my life, and I’m becoming resentful. My husband’s approach is, “That is just how mama is.” I want to set some boundaries. What should I say? -R.B., Atlanta Dear R.B: “Claudy, have mercy, Girl, please!” Your mother-in-law lost a daughter. Boundaries? Are you kidding me? Where is your compassion? I pray that you never experience the death of a child. That’s simply

your mother in-law’s way of saying, “I love you, and I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you, too.” Just say, “Ok, Mama,” or “I will, Mama,” and call it a day. She’s not at your house picking out your husband’s socks each morning. Now that would be a problem. That, my sistah, is a boundary. You’ve got to pick your battles when you’re married, especially with in-laws. You want to fix her, and you want her to be over her grief. That will never happen. What should you say, you ask? Absolutely nothing. Alma Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post.
