Legal Genius Series Jack Greenberg, a Jewish lawyer who leaded up the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., for 23 years, died recently. He was 91. The New York Times lauded him as “one of the most powerful white figures in a movement.” I am sure this name sounds familiar to you, especially if you were around during the civil rights era in the 60’s or have read everything you could on the movement, including the struggle for voting rights. Over the years, in this column I have written other articles with this same title. The first legal genius article was about E. Brice Cunningham, a living legend, who was a partner in one of America’s most prestigious law firms, Finch, Lockridge and Cunningham; and the second article, Judge L. A. Bedford, Dallas’ first black judge (Requiem for a Jurist 1926-2014). These frontier genius’ are so very important to our history and they should not be forgotten or casually tossed aside. I was Brice Cunningham’s legal assistant for three years, modeling part time, and remained a part of the legal world after moving to corporate America. Young attorneys like Sam Hudson, Royce West, Craig Washington, Marcus Ranger and others, came to the firm looking for jobs and advice. These were all black attorneys. The noted attorneys of that day were Joe Lockridge, D. B. Mason, L. Clifford Davis, Fort Worth, Fred Finch, and W. J. Durham. The work was long, abundant, audacious and demanding. W. J. Durham and Thurgood Marshall were classmates, which gets me back to Jack Greenberg and the Texas connection. The nucleus of the Black legal network in the 60’s was Thurgood Marshall. He collaborated with and delegated the civil rights workload across the country. This generation clearly had a plan with vision, opportunity driven and they worked it. For example, one evening while working late in the office, the T:5” phone

pimp in the GOP’s “ho” game and nobody challenges him. Anyway…here’s what the HuffPost reported. “In “Yes she Can”, Dyson’s latest piece for The New Republic, the Georgetown professor details Clinton’s journey on racial issues and predicts that, despite her husband’s problematic legacy on race — exemplified by his crime and welfare reform policies — Clinton will have the chance to push change in ways that eluded Obama. Dyson argued that Clinton, free from the stigma of blackness and the potential for perceived bias, would be able to speak more freely on issues of race than Obama ever could. “She won’t have to make apologies in advance, a priori, [and say], ‘It’s not about black people...’” Dyson said. “Hillary Clinton doesn’t bear that guilt, doesn’t bear that consciousness, doesn’t bear that kind of charge to be made: ‘Hey, you’re trying to hook up your people!’ Well, black people are not her people, but

she’s able, as a result of white privilege, to speak to the interests of black people in ways that were denied to Barack Obama.” I would go further than Dyson to conjecture that Mrs. Clinton would be of similar benefit to all non-WASPs. But even if she doesn’t get a bill passed, at least girls and young women of every hue and hairstyle will have the boundaries of their dreams enlarged. As someone who has been fortunate enough to get halfway up the corporate ladder in a Fortune 100 company, let me assure you that no woman; no matter how smart, how significant or how “well-endowed”, gets to the top without being head and shoulders above her male counterparts. There are some women and men who have slept their way toward success, but there is a ceiling for that form of cunning and upward mobility. Hillary Rodham-Clinton is the consummate woman, mother and political scientist and I’m with her…Period.

My Day

By Dr. J. Ester Davis rang. It was Thurgood Marshall, calling from New York, looking for Brice. The instructions were simple. “Go down to Nacogdoches, Texas, and get so-and-so out of jail.” Jack Greenberg is deemed the last survivor of a renown legendary Civil Rights Legal Team. He is the last surviving member of the original legal team assembled by Thurgood Marshall, the founding director-counsel of the legal defense fund and later the first African American Supreme Court Justice. This team of seven broke down barriers and set examples in the matter of law that are still researched in law libraries around the globe, with voting rights at the very top. These battles they fought... and won...leaving a legacy of legal battles for people all over the world. Did I mention voting rights? In all, Jack Greenberg was before the Supreme Court in more than 40 civil rights cases. Many prominent attorneys have been a part of the Legal Defense Fund, including Barack Obama, who in one case was co-op attorney on his path to the presidency. When Thurgood Marshall joined the federal bench, he named Jack Greenberg to succeed him as director of the defense fund now up to 25 attorneys. Jack Greenberg found time to write a book about his odyssey entitled “Crusaders in the Courts: How a Dedicated Band of Lawyers Fought for the Civil Rights Revolution.” Is there a second generation at bat? HALL: What Price is your Vote Worth? Quit Playin’ by Vincent L. Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.

While America’s “virtues are being “Trumped by a loud-mouthed, government subsidized billionaire and his buffoonish behavior, there really is something serious to be considered about the 2016 elections. I received a political mailer from Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, which made me forget for a scintilla of a second who Donald Trump is. On the forward side, there were several, now deceased former Supreme Court Justices and they were juxtaposed to some of the landmark human rights and civil rights cases they oversaw. Next to these jurists are pictures of the plaintiffs. Just imagine the nine “Scottsboro Boys who were saved from death row by a court overseen by Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes and court in the same frame and visual reference. To hell with all of that foolishness that flows from Donald Trump’s fountain of unforgivable ignorance and unprecedented insolence. The United States Constitution was created by rich White men for rich White men and the rest of America has the Supreme Court as our only salvation. But rather than offer some grand commen-

tary on what Commissioner Price conjectured in his mail piece, let me share the lesson(s) he taught in a two-sided 8 X 11 glossy.  Dred Scott v. Sandford, 1857 (7-2 decision) Chief Justice Taney Denied citizenship to African American slaves.  Prigg v. Pennsylvania 1842 (6-3 decision) Chief Justice Roger Taney Reversed the lower court decision to convict slave catcher Edward Prigg who violated the Fugitive Slave Act

Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896 (7-1 decision) Chief Justice Melville Fuller Upheld “separate but equalâ€? segregation laws. “A Negro has no right that the White man is bound to respect.â€?

Powell V Alabama, 1932 (7-2 decision) Chief Justice Charles E Hughes Reversed the wrongful conviction of nine Black men (The Scottsboro Boys) sentenced to death for an allegation of rape that was recanted by one of their accusers. Â Korematsu v. United States, 1944 (6-3 decision) Chief Justice Harlan F Stone Upheld internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, regardless of their citizenship status.

Brown v. Board of Education, 1954 (9-0 decision) Chief Justice Earl Warren Separating black and white students in public schools is unconstitutional.

Hernandez v Texas 1954 (9-0 Decision) Chief Justice Earl Warren Mexican Americans and all other racial groups in the United States must be afforded equal protection under the 14th Amendment.  Miranda v. Arizona, 1966 (5-4 decision) Chief Justice Earl Warren Prisoners must be advised of their rights before being questioned by police.  Loving v. Virginia, 1967 (9-0 decision) Chief Justice Earl Warren Invalidated state laws that prohibited interracial marriage.  Roe v. Wade, 1973 (7-2 decision) Chief Justice Warren E. Burger Women have a constitutional right to an abortion during the first two trimesters.  Bush V. Gore 2000 (5-4 decision) Chief Justice William Rehnquist Decided a presidency in which the national vote was essentially tied. And this doesn’t include the recent travesties like Citizens United v. FEC or the gutting of the Voting Rights Act in 2013. Y’all better Quit Playin’ and vote.  Donald Trump is a joke but the dangers that come with him are no laughing matter. The price you could pay if he selects the next few justices is more than you can probably afford! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

Fake Outrage over Trump’s Comments is Ridiculous MY PERSPECTIVE by Raynard Jackson (NNPA News Wire Columnist)

I will be writing this column in the spirit of the 2002 blockbuster film, “Minority Report, which starred Tom Cruise. The movie is set in 2054 Washington, D.C. The basic premise of the movie was that the government had the ability to arrest and convict a person of a crime before they actually committed the crime. With that in mind, I predict the biggest loser of next month’s elections will be the American people, regardless of who the winner is. Americans have already become more and more cynical towards our governing institutions; political, religious, corporate, and civic. When people lose all faith in their institutions, it’s a recipe for a total meltdown of society. The WikiLeak e-mails have provided proof, not so much to Trump’s assertion that the election is rigged, but to the fact that the American way of life is rigged. Over the years, I have constantly heard many Republicans complain about how biased and liberal the media is. I used to dismiss these charges as simply sour grapes and that Republicans have never really been very good at communications, but the WikiLeak dumps have proven that Republi-

to you, but also states that she found his report card in one of the books and tells you that she’s seen these grades. Your son never showed you the report card, because he had bad grades. You question your son about the poor grades and his response is that the neighbor had no right to look at his grades. Regardless of how you learned about on his grades, it doesn’t negate the fact that he received poor marks. Likewise, it doesn’t matter how WikiLeaks got all the e-mails, not one e-mail has been proven to be inaccurate and it is the media’s responsibility to question Hillary and her supporters like they have been doggedly questioning Trump over these women who are making “allegations of misconduct. Hillary’s e-mails are presenting actual evidence of wrongdoing. The media has totally ignored hard evidence of Clinton and her campaign having direct conversations with the State Department and Department of Justice regarding open investigations involving Clinton. How is this even possible? Do you really wonder why the American people have lost all faith in our various institutions? Americans feel like if you have power or wealth, there is a different set of rules you live by. If Trump made the argument that the system was rigged in this regard, then he would have the support of most Americans. SMITH: Temperament and consciousness

ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN’S OPINION BY CHERYL SMITH As I sat in Judge Elizabeth Frizell’s courtroom in the Frank Crowley Criminal Court Building, there seemed to be a feeling of excitement, anticipation and even nervousness. Those emotions are not uncommon in courtrooms but today seemed really special. I had heard about Star Court and decided to find out what was really happening. I knew Star Court wasn’t something that was outlined in a judge’s job description and based on what I heard, the many positive things about the Star Court Diversion Program, was worthy of looking into. The program, initiated by Judge , focuses on some key areas: prostitution, drug rehabilitation and mental health. For some who find themselves facing Judge Frizell, the outcome won’t be as positive nor will they get a chance to experience what some are saying is the “best thing that ever happened to me! Some will go to jail. ADDRESS:

Admitting she was hard on the graduates, Judge Frizell said, “ I expect so much of them. The ladies know to be honest. They know where they need to be and now is where they need family and the support system. They are making good decisions. Star Court is a wonderful program because the women are provided with the tools to be successful. The team of professionals and sponsors are on a mission. It’s not a job, more like a ministry. And the world is a better place because of the work they do, especially when you consider that many become productive members of society. If you could have seen the looks on the graduates faces as they were cheered on by their loved ones and given an additional incentive as Judge Frizell waived fines and probation periods. There were tears of joy and looks of pride. Heck, I felt proud of the ladies and their supportive families. When I looked at the women, I saw daughters, mothers, aunts, grandmothers. I saw women.I also saw a look of pride on the face of the Judge. Sure she has to be tough. We have to be tough on crime and we have to realize that for some, incarceration, and yes sometimes medication is necessary. Judge Frizell gets it. Here is a judge who truly has the temperament and consciousness! Cheryl Smith is an award-winning journalist and publisher of the Garland Journal.

The Birth of A Nation By Dwight Brown (NNPA Wire Service Film Critic)

Finally, a filmmaker unearths one of the biggest secrets in American history: slave revolts. It’s a lesson rarely mentioned in history books, though it’s common knowledge to anyone who has taken a Black History course. Kudos to actor-turned-director Nate Parker for shepherding this ambitious project from the kernel of an idea to the completion of an inspiring and evocative film that is nothing less than a masterpiece. There are many facets of this movie that are groundbreaking, historic, monumental and unique. In the evolution of the American film industry few films have ventured into the subject of slavery. Some have misleadingly romanticized the era (Gone With the Wind). Some have made fun of it and belittled its tragic consequences (Django Unchained). Some have eloquently captured the suffering (12 Years a Slave). Some have revealed rebellions from a White man’s perspective (Free State of Jones). None have captured the spirit and emotion of the time, the courage and bravery of resistance and the calculated planning and execution of a rebellion from the viewpoint of African American culture. Until now. Southampton County, Va., is filled with cotton plantations. A young slave boy named Nat (Tony Espinosa) and his family work on a farm run by the Turner family. Nat is thought to be a chosen child by friends and family: “This boy has the holy markings of our ancestors.” He is friendly with the slave owner’s son Samuel (Griffin Freeman). That boy’s mom Elizabeth (Penelope Ann Miller) notices that Nat has a knack for words and she helps him learn how to read, using the Bible as a learning tool. Years later, Nat (Nate Parker) is a young Reverend. His stature among the slaves is high. The Turner family seems to not be too apprehen-

sive about their slave who seems to be intelligent and a leader. Samuel (Armie Hammer), now a young man too, is in charge of a farm that is failing to make money. As talk of rebellious slaves sweeps through the county, Samuel gets Nat to become a traveling pastor who “tames” the nerves of slaves on other plantations, for a fee that is paid to the Turner Family. Traveling around to other farms gives Nat a general of sense of other slaves’ wretched conditions. Several intensely brutal incidences, involving him, friends and a vicious assault on his wife Cherry (Aja Naomi King) by white men, bring things to a head. The time to act has come. Nat: “We’ll destroy them all.” How will it be done? Who will join him? How will this insurrection end? Throughout the film, the script by Parker and Jean McGianni Celestin establishes and maintains a spiritual destiny that never wanes. There are moments that the Nat Turner they have created has Christ-like, martyr-like attributes. How much of this is based on fact or is manufactured to produce a character that audiences will root for is up for debate. One thing for sure is that the real Nat Turner was a courageous man who gave his life for freedom, and the one on-screen takes over that mantle very well. For a first-time filmmaker, Parker makes no huge gaffes. He finds and keeps a tone, pulls

IN MEMORIAM Pastor Charles Frank Lightner

LIGHTNER, Pastor Charles Frank was born on 7/16/1944 to Benjamin Franklin Lightner and Callie Watkins in Italy, Tx. At an early age, he moved to Dallas, Tx and received his education in the Dallas ISD. From a child, it was evident that he was destined to be a leader. He was blessed to start his own trucking business landing various contracts throughout the city. Over 55 years ago, he responded to his inevitable call from God and began preaching the uncompromising gospel at the tender age of 16 years old. In 1974, God elevated him to become, the humble founder and shepherd of the New Comforter COGIC in Dallas, Tx. Pastor Lightner was most proud to be a SERVANT to God, his church, family, and community. In 2001, under Pastor Lighnter and his beloved, late wife, Lady Margie Lightner's leadership, the church purchased 6 acres of land and founded the Cedar Oaks Retirement Center which allowed the community's most valuable citizens the comfort, pleasure, and security which they had given to families and communities for most of their lives. In 2012, under his leadership the Cedar Oaks Child Development Center and New Comforter COGIC's Non-Profit Commercial Food Bank which has been blessed to provide for over 4,500 families throughout the DFW metroplex, was also founded. Pastor Lightner was a visionary with a kingdom mindset. Pastor Lightner had a love for vintage cars and his guitar. On 10/20/2016, after seventy and two years, Pastor Charles F. Lightner boarded the "Old Ship of Zion" bound for Glory and joined his beloved, late wife of 50 years, Margie Lightner. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, 1 daughter, 3 sons, 9 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, New Comforter COGIC family, and a host of other relatives and friends. Twilight Service today 7-9pm at New Comforter COGIC, 1800 E. Illinois Ave. . The Celebration of His Life and Legacy will commence Sat., 10/29/16 11am at Saintsville Sanctuary COGIC, 2200 S. other in a way that creates an indelible moment. Before, and more now, the audience is waiting and ready for Turner to take matters into his own hands. And so is Cherry: “If the Lord has called you to fight, you fight for me. You fight for all of us.” Ensemble acting is rarely this flawless. Usually one actor overdoes it, or one is not up to snuff. Not here. Hammer as the friendly, then cold, Samuel makes you never question his motivation. Colman Domingo as Nat’s cohort gives depth to his role in ways that deserve acclaim. Aunjanue Ellis as the mother and Esther Scott as the grandmother, are stoic. Penelope Ann Miller, through the character of Elizabeth Turner, aptly conveys a sense of nurturing, confusion, shock and fear. Villains come and villains go, but Jackie Earle Haley’s interpretation of Raymond Cobb, a “paddy roller,” a White man who monitored and enforced discipline upon Black slaves, is one of the most vile you will ever see. A rebellion and a subsequent massacre happened in the backwoods of Southampton County, Va. on August 21, 1831. Those events foreshadowed the Civil War. And now millions have the chance to learn a part of Black history that few know. It is so fitting that the brilliant Nate Parker has called his great opus “The Birth of a Nation.” If there is justice in this world and the afterlife, D.W. Griffith, the racist director of the 1915 propaganda film of the same title, is turning over in his grave. This is a story that had to be told. And must be retold again and again. Missing women both dated Revill continued from page 1 and Typhenie Johnson to express his support and encourage the Fort Worth Police Department to continue investigating both cases and also encouraged the FBI and state authorities to get involved. Islam, who is 30, dated Revill for two years, according to her sister, and they have an 11-year-old son. Johnson, who has been missing since October 12, 2016, is 25 and her twin brother, Asher, says he has family that has traveled to Texas to help search for her. No reward has been announced for information about the whereabouts of both women, but Ms. Islam said she will work with the Johnson family and hopefully something will break soon. A fund has been set up to assist the families.Anyone with information should immediately contact the police. See more at www.texasmetronews.com.

Oscar-worthy performances from his cast and sets everything in motion in a thoroughly engaging manner that is sustained for 118 minutes. With the skill of directors with ten times his experience, he blends drama, psychodrama, romance, spirituality and action into a relentless, uncompromising classic. By most epics’ standards, this is concise storytelling (editor Steven Rosenblum) that is perfectly set in the 19th century (Jim Ferrell, set decorator; Geoffrey Kirkland, production designer). The characters wear clothes that looked lived in (Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, costume designer) and when they are injured their cuts and bruises look scarily real (Randi Owens Arroyo, makeup artist). And every element is captured by a very perceptive lens (Elliot Davis, cinematographer). It is a miracle that Parker can write the script, produce the movie, direct the proceedings and still turn in what has to be one of the most difficult and emotionally complex performances of the year. His character evolves from jovial, young man, to preacher with guilt, to loving protective husband and father, to angry rebel seamlessly. Every feeling he exhibits seems authentic. Parker’s portrayal peaks in a pivotal scene when Cherry lies on a bed of white sheets, bludgeoned, and he assures her that everything will be all right, even though life couldn’t be worse. The two actors cry and hold each

Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Have you succumbed to the notion yet that prayer will get you through it? The ‘it’ I’m referring to is EVERYTHING. If you’re like me, if the truth be told, at times you’re not very enthusiastic about your faith. That fire that initially burned in me when I finally met Christ leaves me more cold than hot and I cannot and do not remain constant or consistent in my journey towards eternal salvation, Have you ever been there? Even my prayer life is more often weak not strong. I’ve finally figured out at times like these that if I only do one thing, I have to continue to pray. However casual or cavalier I might think it is, if I do nothing else, I’ve learned that I’ve got to pray my way through it. If you’ve ever been lost on a nameless highway and know that you’re lost, you probably understand what I’m talking about. No exit, no gas stations, no people or other cars around, no one to ask for directions. You just keep driving and you just keep looking, hoping against hope. It’s just you and the needle on the fuel gauge. Given yours and my circumstances, prayer is probably very appropriate when

one is spiritually lost; especially when you are forced to acknowledge that you are lost. My word to you is to just keep praying. At this stage of my spiritual development, I can’t think of an alternative. I just so happened to look up prayer in my bible’s Concordance and found out that I’m correct in my assumption that prayer(s), pray(ed),

At this stage of my spiritual development, I can’t think of an alternative. I just so happened to look up prayer in my bible’s Concordance and found out that I’m correct in my assumption that prayer(s), pray(ed), praying, all hold a special place in spiritual history and in the eyes of God. praying, all hold a special place in spiritual history and in the eyes of God. For every quote I could give you right now, there are many of you who could quote at least three more appropriate ones for this message. James 5:15-16 “And prayer offered in faith

will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you might be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” I will not sit here and profess to you to be a righteous man. What I will do is to profess to you and anyone who will listen that I am a sinner seeking God’s forgiveness. I am also on record as praying for you, my fellow man that you too, will understand God’s faithfulness. Mark 11:24-25 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” I’m not making this stuff up. This is what the text says. Hopefully, what I’m trying to convey to you is once I was lost. I’m sure I’ll get lost again and when it happens, prayer will continue to lead me home. It is an irrefutable spiritual fact. Try it. Speak to God from your heart. Let Him know that you know He knows you are lost. He will then step up and act out on your behalf proclaiming for all to see that you are never really lost and certainly never really alone. He has known where you were from the beginning of time. May God bless and keep you always.

He has made a liar out of me Ask Alma by Alma Gill

Dear Alma, Five years into my marriage my husband moved himself into the downstairs bedroom. The initial reason given was, “He didn’t want to disturb the babies” (including a newborn) with his late-night arrival, and early departures for work. Some months later, after a “marriage check-up” with our pastor, he confessed to me out of euphoria! He admitted that he had started smoking, you know; one of those things I never wanted in my life! Smoking is one of those “THINGS,” you know, those things you list as true deal-breakers, with regard to dating and relationships…FROM THE START! He admitted that he knew how strongly I felt about this, but he figured it was no longer a deal-breaker since we are married! On the one hand, I don’t see using this makes me feel as a justification for divorce. On the other hand, I feel betrayed, belittled, devalued, and bullied into being with someone I would NEVER had been

with, if given the choice of him as a smoker. Signed, He has made a liar out of me!

Dear “He has made a liar out of me, Holy hot water hose, you’re infuriated! I can see the flames flickering from your email. Luckily, I’m here to distinguish this dilemma. Lawd knows what would happen, had you not reached out for help. Quick, duck, here comes a splash of reality–this ain’t about you, it’s about him. Him and his habit, he owns an addiction. I know you feel betrayed tossed and lost in the hot sauce, but the reality is, we’re talking about a serious dependency, a desire that requires you to fully satisfy by any means necessary. Do you wanna know how I know? I smoked for over 20 years before I could quit. Your body craves for the nicotine. That’s why people stand outside in a cold, snow, icy rain to take a smoke. As a non-smoker, what you don’t know is, smoking can be soothing, a stress reliever, it relaxes you. If you’ve never struggled with a compulsion, you just don’t get it. It’s his choice to make. He won’t win unless he’s all in. So, encourage your husband to make up

his mind to quit smoking because it’s the healthy thing to do. Remind him you’d like for him to be around a long time for you and the kids, blah, blah, la-dee-da…you know what I’m talkin’ bout. Ask your doctor for brochures and suggested websites to share with him. Tell him you want him back upstairs, now! Yes, you’re right, smoking is a game changer, but you two can commit to get through this. Stop, read that again, I said you two. Handle your husband’s addiction with patience and tolerance. Don’t nag him, offer support. This will take time. I recall a conversation I had with a loved one who had battled a drug problem. During her last days, I asked, “why didn’t you ever just quit?” Her answer, “for every time you think I didn’t, I did times a million.” I assure you he’s trying, that’s what many smokers do, more than you and the rest of us non-smokers will ever know.
