NOVA Academy students prepare for TV Broadcast

Students at Nova Academy Prichard recently began their TV Broadcast program with the inaugural taping on Wednesday, November 30 at 4:00 p.m. Students at Nova Academy-Prichard have been given a chance to create a school television program, which

Black AIDS Institute honors Lee Daniels on World AIDS Day

By BAI Staffers (Black AIDS Institute) Special to the Garland Journal

The Black AIDS Institute’s Heroes in the Struggle Gala and Award Celebration honors, in a star-studded event and photographic tribute, individuals who, over the past year, have made a heroic contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. He is the Academy Award winning filmmaker of films like PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE, THE PAPERBOY, LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER and MONSTER’S BALL, and the producer of the hit television series EMPIRE and the soon to be released STAR on Fox, but since the earliest days of the epidemic writer/director/producer Lee Daniels has also been an HIV/AIDS activist. “People know me as Lee Daniels the filmmaker. But they don’t really know of my early beginnings when I had a nursing agency prior to that, as I was directing theater, says Daniels, 56. “I had the first nursing agency under contract with AIDS Project Los Angeles over 30 years ago. I had people taking care of people with HIV, because people didn’t want to touch them. So I lived on the front line. That’s a whole different life and something I’m really proud of. After a prodigious career that brought us films like SHADOW BOXER and THE WOODSMAN, in 2009 Daniels brought to the big screen an AIDS story that no one wanted to talk about through the character of 16-year-old Claireece Precious Jones, played by then-newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who learned that her father had died of AIDS and that she was HIV positive. “It began a conversation that had not been

Staying Engaged and Informed FROM THE HILL Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

After the results of Donald Trump’s victory, people in our community and across the nation alike are nervous about the future. Some others may be sad, angry, or overjoyed. These responses are natural. However, the most useful exercise and biggest challenge is determining what comes next. No matter the outcome of any election, we are lucky to live in a democracy, where transitions of power are peaceful. Now that Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress, there will be fierce political battles, whose outcomes members of my party may fear. Some of the most passionate and controversial endeavors of the Obama Presidency could be overturned or vastly changed. For those of us who supported the Affordable Care Act, we are sad to see that its original vision will at minimum be drastically altered. Yet, while we might not agree with certain policy positions that will come from the Trump Administration and the Republicans in majority power, we know that our rights as citizens in a democracy are still as strong as ever. The Election of 2016 does not have to be considered an irreversible travesty. It was divisive and ugly but still it was passionate. And it is after controversial times like these, like the Vietnam War, that our nation moves back into itself, longing for healing, but knowing more about the emotional undercurrents that exist within our populous. No matter your opinion, your

affiliation, your joy or your pain, I encourage you to become involved politically—on any level. Organize in the community, familiarize yourself with your local politicians, make calls, show up at offices, or even come to Washington to let Congress know what you stand for. Political expression is not limited to just the first Tuesday of November, once every 1,461 days. Nor is it limited to your social media feed. It is hard work and requires patient participation. In the words of President Obama, “Democracy is not a spectator sport.” One scary thing about this election is the propensity of misinformation on the Internet. But again, navigating what news is real and what news is fake requires participation and study. Like political organizing, it is a slow and patient process. But it is an opportunity not only to guard ourselves from misinformation, but to arm ourselves with knowledge. We are afforded the great privilege of living in a democracy, where we do not have to fear for our lives as political parties transition between power. However, the price we pay for that luxury is the necessity to participate. For so many of us, was the election a loss? Absolutely. Nevertheless, moving forward, it is more important that we do not lose the lesson, as well. While there is much uncertainty for the future, the one thing we know to be true in the present is that indifference and apathy are not an option. Above all we must participate. We must educate ourselves and begin productive, difficult conversations that elevate our communities. Let us show our gratitude for the democracy in which we live.

Legendary musicians blend sounds at TBAAL By Eva D. Coleman

Will Downing. Najee. Their names are synonymous with class and jazz. With 28 and 30 years respectively of delivering smoothness to audiences all over, they recently joined melodic forces for a pre-Thanksgiving performance at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) in Dallas, the Giving Thanks with Jazz Love Train concert. Days before the show, conversations with both Downing and Najee revealed what they felt the audience could expect. “We’re going to do hit after hit after hit after hit and take you down memory lane,” Downing said. He added they’d be performing music from their latest projects as well. “We’ve enjoyed recording with each other over the years, different projects and touring together. It’s really kind of a happy reunion and so people are going to have a really wonderful time,” Najee said. Downing’s premonition of the type of crowd was accurate. “It’s going to be a grown folks, adult night out. Let’s walk down memory lane together,” he said. Attendees were definitely seasoned. TBAAL was packed! Fans have followed these veteran performers for years and they remain loyal. “I think we’re very fortunate that it’s always going to be people who enjoy listening to an instrumentalist, and there’s always going to be people that support live music,” Najee said. “Nothing can replace the ability of a musician to play an instrument.” Downing equates his longevity in the industry with providing audiences substance that lasts. “You can eat fast food or sit down and eat a proper meal,” Downing said. “And the proper meal is the thing that’s going to sustain and the fast food is going to run right through you. So, that’s always been my mindset. Make it quality.” TBAAL’s auditorium was well fed. Some audience members couldn’t stop shouting their delight, while many others stood with hands swaying in the air or sang along to familiar tunes. The show included moments of adult humor, with Downing providing visual demonstrations via use of a swinging microphone, to Najee encouraging back and forth sing alongs to match his sounds. Najee plays a variety of instruments which he describes as musical personality. “I think that’s the reason why I play saxophone and flute because they both have two different characters,” Najee said. “And depending on which voice you choose, it’s just like listening to a human voice,

the alto voice versus the tenor, or soprano what is other things,” he added. Downing shared, “While laying there, you’ve got just a different character.” It seems the voices of today’s rhythm and blues (R plenty of time to think,” to which he made a vow to & B) have a harder time breaking through to experi- never go back to how things were. “Music is not everything that you are. Downing mentioned that Street Life, in particular, was the toughest for him to interpret because, “Randy Crawford’s vocal interpretation was so incredible and everyone knows everything that she sang. They know when she took a breath,” he laughingly said. Well, Downing masterfully delivers these female inspired hits with ease, as only The Prince of Sophisticated Soul knows how. It’s a moniker Downing learned of during an interview. His initial thoughts, upon hearing the title, led to questions. “First thing I said was, ‘Why can’t I be the king?’ And he (interviewer) said to me, ‘Well the king is Luther Vandross.‘ I said, ‘Oh, okay. Well long live the king! I got you. I’ll be the prince!’” When Najee hit the TBAAL stage followed by his introduction by Will Downing, he asked the audience if they knew Downing’s other career was that of a comedian. During our interview, I gave Downing a new name, the Emperor of Elegance. He replied, “The Emperor of Elegance. Let’s see if that sticks. I like it though. As long as you’re not calling me the court jester or the idiot of idiots!” As Downing and Najee continue traveling along their Soulful Sounds of Christmas tour, they definitely left Dallas area fans in good spirits. So much so that many are already anticipating their quick return. The two, along with Erykah Badu, are honorary chairs for Dallas’ inaugural Riverfront Jazz Festival scheduled for September 1-3, 2017. They’ll share the stage with many other greats, including Freda Payne, Oleta Adams, Alex Bugnon, Jonathan Butler, Divas of Jazz, Pop and Soul: Eloise Laws, Mary Wilson, Rachelle Ferrell, Melanie Fiona, R.L. Trump’s Cabinet nominations are calculated SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR

President-elect Donald Trump protests that he isn’t really the racist, sexist, anti-immigrant Islamaphobe that his rhetorical excesses in the presidential campaign suggested he was. Then he appoints as his “chief strategist a firebrand who published white supremacist, anti-Semitic and misogynist provocations on his media platform. He appoints as national security adviser a retired general who calls Islam an ideology rather than a religion. And now he seems intent on nominating Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to be attorney general, despite racist views that led Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject him for a federal judicial appointment during the Reagan years. The appointment of Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III can only be a calculated insult to people of color and people of conscience. It shows that Trump is itching for a fight with the civil rights community. During his Senate hearing in 1986 it was revealed that Sessions told a Civil Rights Division attorney that he thought the Ku Klux Klan was “OK until he learned they

smoked pot. Sessions said he was joking. Sessions also called a black assistant U.S. attorney — the only black assistant A.G. in his office — “boy. He dismissed the NAACP, Martin Luther King’s SCLC and PUSH as “un-American and “communist inspired. After his rejection, Sessions curbed his tongue a bit. He voted to confirm Eric Holder as the country’s first black attorney general. He co-sponsored the Fair Sentencing Act that aims at reducing the stark disparities in sentencing for black and white drug offenders. Yet Sessions continues to stand in the doorway against progress toward equal rights. He dismissed the Voting Rights Act as a “piece of intrusive legislation.

across the country. He opposed hate-crime laws and supported the effort to end affirmative action programs. Even after the murder of nine parishioners at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C., led to removal of the Confederate flag across much of the South, Sessions called the criticism of this symbol of slavery and secession an effort by the “left to “delegitimize the fabulous accomplishments of our country. Sessions has also been — no surprise — a venomous advocate for a crackdown on undocumented workers. He opposes any easing of immigration laws, denounces President Barack Obama’s decision to defer deportation of the families of children who have been born here, and even

But Trump is about to discover this country has changed. We aren’t going back. African Americans won’t accept a criminal justice system that puts the lives of their children at risk. Latinos and Asian-Americans won’t huddle, frightened that ICE agents may invade their homes. Women and the LGBT community won’t give up their push for equal rights. As senator, he peddled nonsense about voter fraud and voter intimidation. He’s defended state voter ID laws, part of the voter suppression package that Republican governors have pushed in states

opposed the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court This appointment comes with the Trump administration threatening a rollback of basic rights — women’s right to

control their bodies, gay rights, voting rights, immigration enforcement, drug legalization and the escalating effort to challenge systemic racism in our criminal justice system. Sessions would lead a reactionary assault seeking to reverse or weaken all of these rights. “If you have nostalgia for the days when blacks kept quiet, gays were in the closet, immigrants were invisible and women stayed in the kitchen, Sen. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions is your man, Rep. Luis Gutierrez said in a news release. If Trump goes ahead with the Sessions nomination, the Senate Judiciary Committee should hold extensive public hearings on his views and his record. His nomination is more than a disgrace. It is a provocation, a declaration that the Trump administration wants to rollback rights that were won after decades of struggle. The president isn’t picking a fight with minorities. He is picking a fight with the vast majority of America — and we won’t go back. Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. is the Founder and President of Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Looking for ways to make democracy more democratic

“Can we forget for whom we are forming a government? Is it for men, or for the imaginary beings called States? -James Wilson, delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787

When the United States of America was born, emphasis was far greater on “States than “United. Citizens of the newly-formed nation identified first and foremost as “Pennsylvanians or “Georgians, for example, and as “Americans only as a distant second. Our method for selecting a chief executive originally was devised to serve interests of each state, rather than each citizen. The idea that all citizens of the nation should have an equal say in electing the highest office in the land was far from the minds of the framers of the Constitution in 1787. The Constitution did not specify who could vote; that was left to the states and most granted suffrage only to white male adult property owners. However, the Constitution does not specify how each state must apportion its electoral votes. If states agreed to award their votes to the winner of the national popular vote, the anti-democratic influence of the Electoral College would be eliminated. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It has been enacted into law in 10 states and the District of Columbia, representing 165 electoral votes. It will take effect when enacted by states with 105 more electoral votes. Public opinion surveys consistently find solid majorities in favor of eliminating the Electoral College. Even our current President-Elect, the most recent beneficiary of its anti-democratic effect, has called it “a disaster for a democracy. While the road to actual elimination appears long and fraught, eliminating its anti-democratic influence appears to be within our grasp. Donald Trump wins for White America The Last Word

election night with exuberance. I was among the many who forecast a Hillary win. The only disagreement among my circle was how big the Hillary rout would be. I thought she’d get at least 300 electoral votes, and hoped that she’d thump Trump by getting as many as 340, holding him to less than 200 votes. The tables were turned and Trump was the one doing the thumping, with the electoral vote count estimated to be 306-232 (at this writing, final counts were not in). Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, garnering around 400,000 more votes than Donald Trump. White folks won the day for Trump in an amazing showing of white solidarity. Trump took 58 percent of the white vote, but did not get a majority vote from any other racial/ethnic group. Only 8 percent of African Americans voted for trump. He did better among Asian Americans (29 percent) and Hispanics (30 percent). White people repudiated Hillary Clinton and embraced Trump, despite his racist, misogynistic, and jingoistic rhetoric, as one of their own.

Hillary Clinton counted on white women, especially college-educated white women, to save the day for her. But Trump won 53 percent of the white female vote. He won 45 percent of the college-educated white women’s vote, losing that vote to Hillary Clinton by just 6 percentage points. Sixty-two percent of white women who didn’t go to college voted for Trump, while just 34 percent voted for Clinton. College educated white women’s narrow vote for Clinton did not overcome the overwhelming support other whites gave him. White women valued culture and class over gender. Many of them are the mothers, daughters, sisters or wives of the white men who gave Trump 63 percent of their vote. Hillary Clinton failed to energize the base, or transcend the indifference that too many voters felt for her. Turnout was only 56.8 percent, just one percent higher than 2012, and lower than the 58.2 percent turnout in 2008. More than 95 million people who were eligible to vote failed to. The Republican vote was similar for Trump and for Mitt Romney, the last Republican Presidential nominee. Democrats turned out in much lower numbers for Clinton than they did for Obama. Why? Voter suppression is part of the answer. There were nearly 900 fewer voting places in 2016 than in 2012. Further, states like Wisconsin, which Hillary lost by less than

a percentage point, introduced new voter ID laws between 2012 and 2016. Clinton lost by less than 2 percent of the vote in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Florida. People of color were more likely to be affected by voter suppression measures than whites. In Durham, North Carolina, voting machines weren’t working, and a judge ruled to keep the polls open longer to compensate for the broken machines. Clinton lost North Carolina by less than 4 percent. How many more might have voted but for broken machines and other chicanery? How many spent hours in line, and how many had to leave lines because they had to go to work? Hillary Clinton ended her campaign with more than $50 million in the bank! Might some of that money have made a difference in energizing the base? Could more people have been put on payroll as organizers in battleground states, especially North Carolina and Pennsylvania? Should grass-roots organizers have received more resources? Lots of fingers can be pointed in this post-election analysis, but analysis notwithstanding, Trump won. It hurts to write that reality down, but it is a reality we will all have to grapple with for four years. Part of the ugly reality is the realization that too many of our fellow citizens have embraced a racially divisive candidate whose rhetoric has unleashed hateful

speech and attitudes. The Detroit News reported that students in Oakland, Michigan blocked pathways of Latino students coming to school, shouting, “build the wall. These children are emulating their elders, including the “President-elect. The nonpartisan education news website, the74million.org, has reported that “election-related school violence is on the rise in the wake of the Trump victory. Donald Trump was able to tap into the angst that too many whites felt during the Obama presidency, and win the Presidency in the name of white solidarity and white supremacy. It seems incongruous that a rich, privileged, urban businessman should become the voice of the working class disgruntled, the rural neglected (Trump got 62 percent of the rural vote), and white women. But this is the new reality, the triumph of white privilege and hate rhetoric. Whites are just 40 percent of the population in California, a state that gave Hillary Clinton 61.5 percent of its vote. And the Census reports that by 2044 there will be no majority group in our nation. White folks might as well enjoy Trump while they can, but time and demographics are on our side. White supremacy won’t reign forever. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? Race, Obama and Public Policy is available via www.amazon.com

Athletes Choosing Colleges Should Not Forget HBCUs

By Keisha J Kelley For The African-American Athlete

For so long I have watched athletes rally from pee wee football to the halls of college working on their craft. So many kids grow up with aspirations of playing sports at prestigious universities, along with hopes of one day going on to pursue a career in professional sports. Day in and day out, athletes work towards what they hope will one day be a career they excel in, and make their families proud. My only question is when it comes to choosing a university to pursue sports dreams, why do athletes feel the only way to do that is at powerhouse programs, or big name programs? I have lived by the motto for a long time if scouts want you, they will find you. I have seen big names like Indianapolis Colts’ Pro-Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis come out of Alabama A&M University. Alabama A&M is also the home of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Stallworth, a four time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The list doesn't stop there when we talk about Hall of Fame athletes who played sports at Historical Black Colleges and Universities. One simply can't make men-

North Carolina Central University mourns the loss of the 11th Chancellor, Dr. Debra Saunders-White, who passed away today, November 26, 2016, after a heroic battle with cancer. Saunders-White’s tenure was filled with a number of achievements and firsts for NCCU over the past three-and-ahalf years since she assumed the post as chancellor on June 1, 2013. She made institutional history for NCCU with her appointment as the university’s first permanent female chancellor on February 8, 2013. She quickly established and carried out her vision of “Eagle Excellence” that made delivering excellence in our classrooms, excellence throughout our campus and excellence in our service to the community a focus during her administration. Saunders-White, 59 years old, took a medical leave of absence on August 8, 2016. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015. Saunders-White came to NCCU from the U.S. Department of Education after working in higher education administration at Hampton University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, as well as in corporate marketing for IBM. In a statement sent to the university community from Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye, acting chancellor, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, it was noted the following: “Her loss is nearly immeasurable to our community, but her influence on higher education and her genuine love and dedication for NCCU, most especially the students, are clearly evident by her impact in Durham, across North Carolina and throughout our nation. Chancellor Saunders-White was a powerhouse of energy and wit; she spent her life passionately executing on her visionary and transformative strategy of using education to create opportunity.” Saunders-White is survived by two children, Elizabeth Paige and Cecil III, her mother, Irene Saunders, and her brothers, Roger, Ralph and Kyle Saunders, and their families, a number of other family members and a host of friends.

scouts have told them, what recruits have sold them, and what coaches have shared with them. The possibility of playing time and exposure at top notch programs like Alabama, Auburn or LSU are hard to resist. Who wouldn’t want to play under a winning coach like Nick Saban at Alabama? HBCUs don’t have million dollar facilities. And sure you will practice in the heat, or cold, which is how you develop mental toughness. However, one thing I can tell you for sure is that your opportunity to play will happen. In HBCU programs, you will get your shot on the field, break records like Southern University’s Lenard Tillery, who broke the SWACs rushing record, and still got a shot at a pro career. Understand, everyone is not going to get drafted. Not everyone will make, it, either. As long as you put in the work, dedication, drive, and sacrifice, the rest will come. All you need is one shot. Just remember if they want you, they will find you, the choice simply is yours.

I have often found myself wrestling with the concepts and the realities of good and evil. It stands to reason that if you believe in God and His goodness, power and the righteousness of Jesus Christ, then it follows that you must also believe in Satan and his earthbound inherent ‘evilness.’ If this is true, then it is the height of ignorance or hypocrisy that we as human beings follow a course of action consistent with one belief and act totally inconsistent with and contrary to that same belief. We concede to the reality that evil exists. As a matter of fact, our civil laws and subsequent penalties are there to protect us against criminal, abhorrent and yes even evil behavior. Hence, what I am merely recognizing here is that the counterbalance of this fact ought to be a set of behaviors, or at least a set of professed beliefs, that confirm the reality of God, the good stuff. Unfortunately, it has been my experience and at times my behavior, that evil demands action, while ‘Godness’ gets a whole lot of lip service. I believe this is true because with all of our flaws and faults (sinfulness), we’ve gotten used to functioning in a world somewhat controlled by the evil one. Christians do recognize, must recognize that satan has power in the secular world. Thanks to him, many of us have become numb to those things that demonstrate his

Well, the truth is we are that ball in this high stakes game for our very own souls. Imagine that. ultimate sacrifice, it becomes clear where we fit in this struggle between good and evil. We are the ultimate prize. To the victor goes us. Fortunately for us, we have some say in the clubhouse celebration. Once you accept the truth of good and evil in the context of God and the devil, the rules of engagement are clear. In this game the ball (us) has a say in who wins the game. Can you imagine any athletic event where the ball actually participates as an independent active component? Well, the truth is we are that ball in this

high stakes game for our very own souls. Imagine that. We can stack the deck in our favor. But it can’t be happenstance. It must be deliberate and we must be constant in making sure that the ball takes favorable bounces throughout the game. To be sure, with this in mind, Christ has given us the game plan we need to insure victory. “He who believes in me….shall never die.” John 11:25-26. That’s it. It’s all about belief. When Jesus says in John 16:8-9, “when He (the Counselor/Holy Spirit) comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin because men do not believe in me…” He is telling us that the biggest threat to our own salvation is disbelief. You see belief in Christ brings about condemnation of satan and satan-like things i.e., evil. It must follow. Now we are armed and ready for the struggle. We are prepared and fortified against the evil that would destroy us. We now have a reference point for current and future behavior. We know the difference between good and evil. More importantly, we can now recognize our weaknesses in relation to evil and our strengths in relation to good. No contest worth anything is without risks. But for now, let’s play and may God forgive your fumbles and bless your recoveries in the name of His Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

May God bless and keep you always.

Down for my man

I can’t give you all the details, but let’s just say my boyfriend is doing something that makes a lot of money, but it’s illegal. If he gets caught, “we” could go to jail. I love him and I’ve always supported him. He was there for me when I didn’t have anyone and helped me financially complete my degree and purchase my condo. I don’t want to leave him now that I’m gainfully employed, but I do worry about him getting caught. Sometimes I feel like I’m living a double life. Now that my feet are firmly planted and I’m making a good salary, I would like for him to go legit, but he’s not having it. He says the money’s too good. How can I get him to see, we can leave that life and do well and have a good life? Signed, Down for My Man

existence in this world where we temporarily reside. Fortunately when we come to Christ, we are able to put some perspective on all of this as we begin to see the contrast between good and evil in our own lives. That’s when I believe you finally get it. By putting ourselves in perspective to Christ’s

Ask Alma by Alma Gill

Dear Down for My Man, Some people will sell their soul for a diamond-crusted, fried bologna sandwich, while others will work hard, all day long at doing what’s right. The road to righteousness is long, undoubtedly unfair and ruthlessly rough. The sidewalk leading to half-baked shenanigans won’t let you stand up on a slippery slope. You have to decide which path is best for you right now, today and tomorrow, not yesterday, six months ago or the year before.

Honestly girl, if your Mr. Do Right is doing wrong and you know it and support it, you’re Mrs. Do Wrong your dang self. Don’t start trippin’ now that you have a degree. Who you think you’re fooling? You’ve been in this from the jump. Your condo won’t keep you out of jail. Your degree won’t prevent you from serving time. You can’t dissect, analyze and redirect this negative into a positive now, because you’re getting an authentic paycheck. Get yourself out of this mess, before it’s too late. When it all comes crumbling down, and it will, you’ll be on your way to lock down, for love’s sake. Here’s my question to you: Is it worth it?
