THE MAN WITH A PLAN
Proclamation honors MARCH Foundation 20th Anniversary and Jarvis feted
Credited with launching many careers and using his insight to build stations that dominated the market, Chuck Smith’s life and contributions will be celebrated Saturday, November 4, 2017, 4p.m. at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas.
Charles "Chuck" Smith was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi to James and Mary Smith. He grew up in Milwaukee, WS., where as a teenager, Chuck's love of music led him to become a DJ at the local YMCA, which ultimately led him to become a DJ at 1590am WAWA radio station. As an adult he relocated briefly to Memphis, Tenn. where he worked at WDIA radio. In 1970, Chuck was part Charles Edward Smith of a team hired to start a new radio Sept. 25, 1935 - Oct. 5, 2017 station in Dallas, TX. for Service Broadcasting Corporation. Hired as the Music Director, he was eventually promoted to General Manager and remained with KKDA-AM and K104-FM for 42 years. During Chuck's tenure with KKDA his leadership, guidance and mentoring helped to shape the careers of many up and coming young men and women in the African-American communities of DFW, who went on to become successful entertainers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and more. Some of those names include some of the biggest names in the broadcast business. He was the brainchild of “the music you grew up listening to and was always ahead of his time. He was instrumental in bringing “community talk radio to the Dallas Ft. Worth area, especially geared towards people who felt that they had no voice. One of D-FW’s most popular radio personalities, Willis Johnson, sums up the expressions of many: “I can’t say enough about Chuck. He was more than an employer for me, he was a mentor and extended father. We argued a lot, but we also strategized and won a lot together. My 35-plus years with him were special both professionally and personally. “He was the creator of many ideas that are still in place in the Dallas/FW community today and his fingerprints in radio are all over America. So many of us were impacted by his leadership and influence....Thanks Chuck. Many said that with Chuck Smith you could express your opinions without fear of retaliation. He was a quiet giant in the radio industry and many owe their careers and success to him. There was always an open door to Chuck to hear the knowledge and the wisdom of someone who didn’t want the public accolades but didn’t mind sharing with you to help you grow! Chuck leaves his wife Pearl, Sons Todd (Dena), Turhan (Raquel) and Ian, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild to remember his love and words of wisdom from this day forward. His extended Service Broadcasting family and friends remember him fondly as the "Man with the Plan" behind many of the antics and schemes which helped define See CHUCK SMITH, page 7

Blending food with extreme entertainment Photos and Story By Eva D. Coleman It started with Shhh...don’t tell. Well...the secret’s out! Celebrity chef Tre Wilcox’s Don’t Tell Supper Club is a hot new spot in downtown Dallas. Nestled in a corner at 2026 Commerce Street, the red carpet and stanchions leading up to the doors of the establishment give one an impression that something exclusive is going on inside. Stepping in you’ll notice decor you can’t help but canvas and hope to explore. The hostess staff up front greets each person with a smile and genuine pride. “I love working here and coming to work every day,” hostess Alexandra Nicole Piland said. “I had my birthday party here one day and started working here the next,” she shared. I later discovered that she had previously applied...so it wasn’t as surprising as I’d originally thought. Freakin’ Eats

Don’t expect to tell your date across from you, or guests of a large party, anything. Just take it all in, order from the menu and eat... all while enjoying live music on stage, acrobatics and
New Dallas venue blends food with extreme entertainment. What was refreshing was the amount of care she gave, which could have resulted from her experience of being a customer first. After being seated, a complimentary drink they call “mooze booze” is placed in front of you. When asked what was in it, the wait-

He swallowed a sword, and asked me to pull it out! The magician was friendly and engaging. As I pulled the long sword from his mouth, I couldn’t dare look at him! I felt the movement though... it definitely did not feel like a cheesy retractable one. Each food item that came out was plated beautifully. Great tastes followed. I
highly recommend the Grilled Wild King Salmon with Spicy Chipotle Jack Cheese Grits and Tequila Lime Sauce! HALL: Four Star Foolishness!!
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall Donald J Trump may be the saltiest cracker in the barrel, but he is by no means the only saltine in or around the Oval Office. Trump espouses veiled racist and oppressive leanings that have become germane to the Republican Party for which he serves as the titular head. Trump’s senior sage and soother John Kelly chose the safe haven at Fox News to beat his chest again. You know FOX NEWS aka Fixed On Xenophobia- News to Encourage White Supremacy. Fox News is the home and headquarters of alternative facts and outright fiction. It didn’t take a four alarm fire to get the “Four Star
General to double down on his unwillingness to atone for the lie he told on Florida U.S. Representative Frederica S. Wilson. Kelly obviously believes that defending the President’s honor in deference to honoring his own oath was proper and in order. Parenthetically, this interview should serve as due notice and reminder to all of you “Progressives that the legacy of Robert E. Lee and the growing number of Neo-Confederates are here to stay for at least another two generations. NBC News reported it in this way. “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Monday said, ‘the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil
War.’ Speaking to Fox News, Kelly offered a view of history in which both sides of the Civil War — a pro-slavery Confederac y and the opposing Union — were made up of “men and women of good faith. Kelly’s views echoed those of his boss, President Donald Trump, who claimed that “both sides were to blame after violence broke out during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that claimed the life of an anti-racism protester. “There are certain things in history that were not so good and other things that were very, very good, Kelly said. “I think we make a mistake as a society, and certainly as individuals, when we take what is accepted as right and wrong, and go back 100, 200, 300 years or more and say, ‘What
Christopher Columbus did was wrong.’ You think
detract do not render the truth invalid. Grandmother used to say; “You can’t argue with the truth‌Fool.â€?
general Kelly? We don’t have to wait 100 years to say that Segregationists like Strom Thurmond and Bull Connor aren’t worthy of street names or statues. And by the way, Donald Trump Boulevard, even a century from now will be a hard sale. General Kelly’s outburst caught everyone by surprise. However, Kelly’s collusion with Trump to obfuscate and
We are watching as some very powerful men have been ‘outted’ as sexual deviants and abusers. Just like in the case of race relations, if we are at a crossroads in terms of gender in this nation, the time has come for
us to confront patriarchy and warped patriotism. We can’t continue to go along to get along. Everyone thought, present company included, that General Kelly would be able to deter Trump from his path of narcissism, ignorance and brinksmanship‌But alas‌we was wrong. Kelly apparently shares Trump’s insolence and disrespect. Kelly held his ground Monday: â€?Oh, no,â€? Kelly said. “No. Never. Well, I’ll apologize if I need to. But for something like that, absolutely not. I stand by my comments.â€? John Kelly wears the prestige and prominence that comes with being a Four Star General. That’s commendable. Likewise he wears the stain that comes with Trump. That’s four star foolishness! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.
MALVEAUX: Did the FBI just declare war on Blacks? While White men are beating Black men on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, while a “lone White wolf is shooting people from the Mandalay Bay Hotel, and while the word “terrorist is hardly used to describe these men, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), under the leadership of the racist Attorney General Jeff Beauregard Sessions, has thought up a new way to oppress Black people. Despite the fact that there is no evidence of an organized “movement, the FBI has described Black people that have rallied for racial equality and criminal justice reform as “Black Identity Extremists, who pose a domestic terrorist threat to police officers. Hold up! We have seen domestic terror threats, though there are those of limited intelligence, who cannot fathom them. The man who shot up an Orlando, Florida nightclub was a domestic terrorist. Dylan Roof, who worshipped with the parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. then murdered nine of them, was a domestic terrorist so highly regarded by law enforcement, that they bought
him a meal from Burger King. The man I will not mention in Las Vegas was a domestic terrorist, but the FBI is manufacturing evidence to focus on African Americans, who embrace our Black identity and social activism. “Foreign Policy, the magazine and website that broke the story of this new classification of “woke Black people, shared the FBI document online that links Black identity with extremism and threats to police officers. The document mentions Black Lives Matter, although the connection between Black Lives Matter and anti-police violence has not been established. For the FBI to identify “Black Identity Extremists (BIE) as domestic terrorists, is to declare war on Black people. After all, what does it mean to be a “Black Identity Extremist? Does it mean we love our Blackness and refuse to back down when we are attacked? Does it mean that we revel in our identity and use every available platform (thank you, Colin Kaepernick) to lift our voices up against injustice? Why is this embrace of Blackness so frightening to melanin-deficient people?
The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
They prefer us silent, docile, grateful and acquiescent. They demand no such acquiescence from their melanin-impaired friends, who gleefully walk through civilized streets of places like Charlottesville and parry racist chants like “You will not replace us, Jews will not replace us! That’s domestic terrorism, Beauregard. Call it like it is, instead of inventing a Black movement that does not exist. Andrew Cohen wrote about the FBI report for the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University and said that “there is no “BIE movement, because it only exists in the barren minds of those within the Trump Administration that want you to believe that there is some sinister, Black force out there bent on attacking police officers.
No journalists or academics have discovered and chronicled such a movement or its leaders. No such leaders have come forward to say they are a part of such a movement. No one has killed a cop in the name of such a movement. The only citations to the movement, Foreign Policy tells us, come from “internal law enforcement writings made over the past two months. Journalist Sam Fulwood III, writing for the Center for American Progress Action Fund news site ThinkProgress.com, describes the FBI report as an “ominous siren call coinciding with President Donald Trump’s penchant for stoking racial divisions in the country. He says that “the administration views criminalizing communities of color as a way to shield police from
scrutiny and score points with a base of White voters. We’ve walked down this path before. We can start with Marcus Garvey, who dared to dream of Black independence and paid a horrible price for it. Fast forward to the Nation of Islam, the Black Panther Party, and so many others identified as “enemies of the state. J. Edgar Hoover submitted a five-line request to get Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s phone lines tapped because he was an alleged Communist. Was Dr. King perceived as a “Black Identity Extremist, because he preached about economic justice for all “and for the rights of Black people? The FBI report said that the “Black Identity Extremist movement began after a Ferguson, Missouri police officer unnecessarily killed Michael Brown. Andrew Cohen noted that the FBI report listed six cases where so-called BIE perpetrators killed police officers. These cases were so isolated, that if these men had been White, they would have been classified, as Dylan Roof was, as mentally ill or troubled, and handed a Happy Meal from McDonald’s. In-
stead, the FBI figured out another way to demonize Black people. Meanwhile, according to The Washington Post, 180 Black people have been shot and killed by police, so far, this year. Six instances of BIE folks allegedly (do we know they are BIE, or just crazy) killing police officers is a pattern, but 173 Black folks being shot by police officers is what? Business as usual? This so-called BIE nonsense is diabolically racist and pathologically creative. It suggests that any Black person, who has issues with so-called law enforcement is suspect. I stand with my people, who choose to protest ignorance, ugliness, and nonsense. Those who embrace their Black identity are not terrorists; we are healthily self-confident. We are at risk, as we have always been when injustice prevails. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Founder of Economic Education. Her podcast, “It’s Personal with Dr. J is available on iTunes. Her latest book “Are We Better Off: Race, Obama and public policy is available via amazon.com
Personification of Racism: It has Nothing to do with Race Speaking Truth to Power by Dr. Brenda Wall
It works two ways. You get to say who and what is a racist if you are speaking from the world view that has introduced and sustained racism. However, because it is a functionally distorted and self-serving view, it only works when you are speaking to those who benefit from the racism such a view perpetuates. Thus, when polls suggest
that people understand what 45 is really saying and align themselves with him, they hear more than a dog whistle. It is a sign that there is a protected place where white supremacy is nurtured. They call it Culture. Welcome to the base. However, the other way it works falls outside the purview of the white supremacist.
You don’t get to say who or what is a racist, because you have no way of knowing. This can be upsetting for the racists, because they must grapple with being flat out wrong. They become appalled that their habit of marginalizing and defining people of color is denounced by people of color. This affront is deeply disturbing when their culture is rejected. President Obama did not have permission of Donald Trump to become president. Rejection. Colin Kaepernick does not have permission from 45 to take a knee. Rejec-
tion. Black Lives Matter. Rejection. You should stand for the national anthem. Regrettably for the racist, you do not get to determine this perspective. You don’t get to say how patriotism is priority or how authority is to be expressed. This alternate perspective is valid and has the advantage of First Amendment right. 45 will get worse. He is haunted. The Obama presidency haunts with his aura of brilliance, moral authority and self-confidence. The Obama legacy finds voice in those who loved Obama and also in those willing to do what President
Obama could not or would not do. Their voices speak for justice; speak against police brutality; and speak against that third stanza in the national anthem. We need a values revolution in America By Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II
On Friday, Oct. 13, President Donald Trump went before the annual Values Voter Summit hosted by the Family Research Council and declared America “a country that never forgets that we are made, all of us, by the very same God in heaven.” In the name of Jesus, Trump vowed to “stop cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values,” but the Values Voter Summit no more represents Jesus than did the church authorities that backed slavery. Ironically, Trump invoked the name of Jesus in virtually the same breath that he announced his executive order to stop the federal government’s cost sharing reduction payments, which subsidize healthcare for lower-income families under the Affordable Care Act. Throughout the Scriptures, virtually every story of Jesus admonishes us to see to the needs of the poor and vulnerable among us, but Trump vowed at the Values Voter Summit to defend those who use religion to discriminate. The Christian nationalists Trump has emboldened do not follow the Jesus I know and preach. Their values are not Christ, but cash; not grace, but greed. As the Princeton historian Kevin Kruse has chronicled in his book, “One Nation Under God,” they are the heirs of preachers, who were purchased by the robber barons of the early 20th century to resist the New Deal and the Social Gospel. During the Civil Rights Movement, they spoke against Rabbi Abraham Heschel and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These Christian nationalists contradict Jesus, who said that, “as you have done
it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” They serve only the interests of the wealthiest Americans and take every opportunity to deny any provision of care or encouragement to the poor. They have elected far-right extremists in the country’s legislatures, who have become paid puppets of a White supremacist corporate oligarchy. Elected with the support of wealthy despots, these men (and a few women) pass voter suppression laws that make them accountable to the voters. These peddlers of piety deliver huge tax cuts for the super-rich, permit corporations to spew poison into the environment, and fund a military budget so enormous and sacrosanct, that American citizens are no longer even welcome to know what that budget is. All of this in the name of the Prince of Peace. Their poisonous mix of racism and religion hurts all of us, but the irony is that it hurts more poor, White people in raw numbers. The agenda they are pushing in Washington and in state houses will hurt Southern, so-called “red” states, the worst, but at the Values Voters Summit, lead organizer Tony Perkins put on duck hunting waders and pretended to “wade into the swamp” as a man of the people. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls Perkin’s Family Research Council “a hate group.” Perkins denies that Islam is a religion and regularly rails against gays and warns that LGBT citizens plan to round up the Christians in “boxcars.” His vice president, William “Jerry” Boykin, Jr., claims that Islam is “pure evil” and should not be protected under the First Amendment. Boykin has threatened to physically
Dear Alma,
attack anyone not using the bathroom that he thinks they should use. We have to stop calling these leaders White Christians or evangelicals. Why should we listen when they p-r-a-y in public and p-r-e-y on the people? These attacks on healthcare will become devastating to the poor. Even a Republican governor said Trump’s executive order will hurt the mentally ill, damage the poor and distress families. Trump has brought about a devolution of values, not a revolution of values. They did not have a values conference in that D.C. ballroom; it was a vicious conference where they clapped and applauded a president, who would undermine healthcare for the poorest and most needy people in our country and then attempt to claim that somehow he has rescued Judeo-Christian values. Nothing could be further from the truth, and nothing could be more of a sign that this president and those who go along with him suffer from a values and moral bankruptcy. Now, more than ever, we
see the truth of what Dr. King said: we need a “moral revolution of values.” I have been crossing this country for the past eight weeks with Rev Dr. Liz Theoharis, meeting in churches and synagogues and community colleges with thousands of people, who know we need a values revolution in America. We are building a Poor People’s Campaign and Moral Revival to not only reclaim our time, but also to reclaim our values, which been hijacked by extremists. Corporate sponsorship has bloated the public image of extremism, but there are far more people of faith and conscience, who want to revive the heart and soul of our democracy. We are inviting that moral majority to speak out and stand up for a #ValuesRevolution. Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, is the President of Repairers of the Breach, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, and author of The Third Reconstruction. NOVEMBER 18, 2017
I am a 64 year-old divorced woman who lives with my father. Some years ago, when my marriage fell apart, and Mom was diagnosed with dementia, I moved back home to help my dad with her. I was also working part-time, so I couldn’t afford my own apartment. Two years ago, Dad and I could no longer care for Mom at home, so we put her in a care facility, and I retired. During this time, I have made new friends, three of them live in the state of New Mexico. A few months ago, I went to visit these friends, and fell in love with New Mexico. The cost of living isn’t as high as it is here, and the laid-back, small city life seems to mesh well with my personality. I feel this is the place I am meant to live the rest of my life. My problem is that Dad is 87, and I’m leery of moving hundreds of miles away, knowing there are some thugs in the neighborhood, who may try to break into the house once they learn Dad is there alone. Although I have a sister, she has never been there for our parents the way I have been. In fact, our parents haven’t seen her in seven years. Some friends and relatives say I should go for it, since I’m divorced and childless, and also reminding me I’m no longer a young woman. Then, there are those who feel I’m being selfish for wanting to make this move and finally live my own life. Am I wrong? New Mexico is Calling Me Dear New Mexico, Hello, my darling, thank you for taking the time to email me and to allow me the privilege to weigh-in on your situation. It takes a special person to care for elderly and/or invalid family members. I’m sending a big hug your way. I want to start by sharing that my mom lived with me and my family for the last two years of her life. She had come to a place where she could no lon-
ger live alone. Was my life on hold? Yes, but I wouldn’t take a dime for that time, as I’m sure, neither would you. You’ve already lived through the thick of it, so, there isn’t much more I could share with you about the “role reversal” regarding parental care. It’s hard, it’s thankless and it’s heartbreakingly some of the best times you’ll spend with your parents, unconditionally caring for them as they did for you. It’s an honor for us, but not so much for strong-willed parents. Their eyes always seem to see you as the child they raised. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how many children you have or how many times you’ve been married. LOL. I can’t help but think, now that your mom’s gone on to glory, that you should continue to be there for your dad. Don’t abandon him now. Stay, give him the same love and commitment you gave to your mother. Your dad, I take it, doesn’t need as much attention, but that shouldn’t determine your decision. You’re doing it just, because it’s the right thing to do. Is it selfish for you to want a break, to want to relocate and start living your own life? Absolutely not at all, that’s normal and you have every right to feel that way. You’ve been an attentive, dedicated and loving daughter…don’t stop now. There’s no need to relocate, just yet. Take care of your Dad and, every three months or so, go visit your friends for a week or two. Sadly, when your dad’s no longer with us—it’ll be time to make your move. I don’t have either one of my parents anymore, and I regret the extra time I missed spending with them every day, because I was busy, I had a family, I had people to see, places to go, things to do. So, trust me, you’ll never regret putting your life on hold by choosing to honor your mother and father. God is watching and will undoubtedly grant you the desires of your heart. Hold on a little longer, your day is coming. Y ou gave and it will be given back to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Alma

Just the thought of being able to do that on a small scale meant a lot to me.” The event also featured entertainment by Don Diego and the premiere of an anniversary video providing an overview of the history of the foundation and the many programs and projects it has supported over the past 20 years. It is available for viewing by clicking https://vimeo. com/236484337 The MARCH Foundation’s scale of influence continues to spread far beyond Plano. Beneficiary organizations include: Generation Success in Plano, TX; Create Your Dreams in Atlanta, GA; The Piney Woods School in Piney Woods, MS and Project
Medishare for Haiti Relief. In 2015, the MARCH Foundation made a $100k challenge grant to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to establish the Eric H. Holder, Jr. Fellowship. Past Chairman and founding member Jim Castillo of Calabasas, CA spearheaded the effort to commit resources to supporting a new generation of civil rights attorneys at LDF. Castillo said the 20 years of targeted gifting by the philanthropists of the MARCH Foundation has made an immeasurable impact. Access to fellowships and college would have been financially off limits for most MARCH recipients, Castillo said. “When you look at the value equation -- where can you give wisdom, work and wealth, and give it with a group of people who are similarly aligned?” Castillo
explained. “As I look back on the time and energy spent with MARCH, the impact is really invaluable because we have targeted helping African-American youth.” According to the Digest of Education Statistics, increasing numbers and percentages of Black and Hispanic students are attending college. Between 2000 and 2015, the percentage of college students who were Black rose from 11.7 to 14.1 percent. Also, the percentage of Black 18- to 24-year-olds enrolled increased from 30.5 percent to 34.9 percent in that same period. Castillo, Jarvis and friends intend to do their part to improve those figures. The MARCH Board is comprised of active and retired UPS executives. Their careers spanned an average of 35 years, beginning as package car drivers or truck loaders. Those men whose personal finan-

cial investments provided the initial source of funding for contributions and grants manage the Plano-based 501(c) (3) organization. As part of the celebration, the Board presented Jarvis with a $5k gift in the name of the H. Kay and Kenneth B. Jarvis Foundation. The funds will be distributed as a scholarship or grant to an organization in the Jarvis Foundation’s name. “We thought long and hard about how to properly honor our Chairman Emeritus, Ken Jarvis, whose influence has spread far beyond the Plano community,” explained Chairman Norman Carmichael of Atlanta. “We decided providing them with a foundation gift they could then share with the community would be a unique and appropriate way to do so.”
From Staff Reports Dallas County Commissioner John WIley Price recently announced that once again the two-day cultural celebration, KwanzaaFest, will be held in the Automobile Bulding in Fair Park, December 9 - 10, 2017. KwanzaaFest brings one of the largest "free events in the metroplex" and this year is no different. Attendees can shop for the holiday season, get free health screenings for high blood pressure, prostate screenings and bring your children and have their teeth and health checked. Also, if you need to sign up for ObamaCare this year before the deadline, you can even get that taken care of. In 1991, KwanzaaFest

rolled out its inaugural run and has been running ever since. The first KwanzaaFest was held at Lincoln High School and attracted more than 10,000 patrons, according to media reports. KwanzaaFest, a 501(c) 3 organization, and its contributions to the north Texas communities it has served for the past 27 years have been plentiful and varied. The annual festival has become a staple of substantive family-friendly activities and services needed by the community.
