Cold case gets major attention 15 years later By Sam Boyd Garland Journal
It has been over 15 years since Sarah Kinslow disappeared but her face remains a vivid memory for loved ones who recall her two front teeth that overlapped, two chicken pox scars on her left cheek and a mole on the right side of her neck. Sarah also had acne and six piercings: four in her left ear and two in her right ear. Sporting wavy, blond hair, there’s also a tattoo of the letter “I on the inside of her ankle. The last time her blue eyes were seen, the 14-year-old was wearing baggy blue jeans, blue and grey running shoes, and a teal hoodie. That was in 2001 in Greenville, Texas. 57,810 missing person reports were received in 2015 alone, according to the Teas See KINSLOW, on Page

A Father’s Table Culinary Boot Camp is part of President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative’s network. The annual culinary event, deemed as one of the largest urban Father’s Day celebrations in the country, is moving forward with a new name and additional community initiatives in time for this year’s Juneteenth event. Lamar St., Dallas, TX 75215. “Being the firstborn son and oldest of 14, I was raised by a single mom, a grandmother and an aunt. They made sure that all of my siblings and myself experienced a great celebration of the men in our family and they cooked & served great food, “says Terry Allen, Manager of A Fathers Table/A Taste of the South, Inc. “The men who cook meals for the charities our event supports are proud to do something they love to give back and connect to their communities and show men in a very positive light.” “We are overjoyed to enter into this new chapter with City Men Cook, while maintaining our traditions of food and celebration,” Allen added. “Our mission is clear and what remains most important is that we continue our commitment to fathers and father figures in our families and communities through this showcase of men, mentors and leaders. I could not think of a better day to do so than on Father’s Day,” said Allen. “You don’t look sick.”
Lupus patients often hear this comment from family, friends, and even people they have just met. Many individuals living with lupus call this a blessing and a curse. While appearance may not indicate that an individual has been diagnosed with a chronic, life-changing, and very high-cost disease, many people will simply not understand this. When individuals with lupus are told that they don’t appear to be sick, it is not only disheartening, but devastating. On average, it takes nearly six years and three physicians to receive a correct diagnosis of lupus. Unfortunately, lupus is often mistaken for other diseases because it has the ability to mimic other disease and affect multiple parts of the body. Lupus is also a very expensive chronic illness,

costing at minimum $21,000 per year and up to $64,000 per year for both direct and indirect costs. Most individuals with lupus actually show few noticeable signs of the disease. Instead, lupus can cause damage to any organ system in the body including the skin, lungs, heart, joints, kidneys, and brain. Common symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, fatigue, and long-lasting fevers. The illness can vary so much that it can manifest in all of the above mentioned organs or it can enter complete remission with no symptoms. Approximately half of adults live with a chronic illness. Many who live with a chronic illness experience stigma not just by their family and friends, but also within the healthcare space. Patients who internalize stigma and experience stigma from healthcare workers choose to access healthcare less and experience a decreased quality of life. Patients with chronic illness actually forego treatment because they do not want to face discriminatory stigma by the healthcare workers that are supposed to be See EBJ on Page 3

Message from the Mayor `
Douglas Athas Garland Mayor
Historically, this is an important year for our city. Garland was incorporated on April 18, 1891 so we have been celebrating our 125th birthday. This is also the 100th anniversary of the Bankhead Highway, the transcontinental highway that started at the White House and ran through Garland to San Diego. The route through Garland mainly followed Main Street and Garland Avenue south to Dallas. There is a historical marker on the downtown square recognizing the highway’s importance to the growth of our community. The City Council welcomed two new Council Members, David Gibbons in District 1 and Richard Aubin in District 5. Both will have big shoes to fill as we thank outgoing Council Mem-

bers Tim Campbell and Billy Mack Williams for their service to the City Council and the City of Garland. Both have given their best and we will miss them. The Council met for our annual City Council Retreat to discuss our goals and objectives for the upcoming budget year. This will be another big year of growth and progress for Garland. The summer months are officially upon us and it is one of the best times of year to see families out playing and exploring our city. Whether it is through our parks and recreation centers, our bike and walking trails, shopping, or catching a performance at the Granville Arts Center, it’s great to see residents and visitors enjoying our attractions. If you are looking for something fun for family and friends to do this summer, visit our new Convention and Visitors Bureau website atwww.visitgarlandtx.com. The City of Garland has been active, very active! We recently beat every other community in Texas by winning the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge” for large cities (population 100,001-300,000), with
more points than even the largest cities. I am very proud of our city and community for accepting the challenge and excelling, and pushing each other to be healthier and more active. One of best things about being Mayor is connecting one-on-one with the community. I enjoy attending events and representing our great city, locally and across the country, but I like listening to the brags, ideas, needs, and expectations of our citizens. I continue to host Mayor’s Evening In and invite you to come and share your ideas for Garland. Remember: Grow Community. Grow Opportunity. Grow Garland. ************

EBJ, from Page 2 part of their support system. Patient silence is common with chronic disease, and in lupus, that silence has catastrophic consequences. Few people are actually aware that lupus exists and there is very little federal funding for finding the cause and a cure for lupus. There is currently only one approved drug to treat lupus. While ongoing lupus research is promising, we must remember that lupus is still largely a scientific and biological mystery. We must strive to drive stigma out of the healthcare system overall. We must always remember that the appearance of someone with a chronic disease is often a poor indicator of how their illness affects them. Just because disease isn’t visible doesn’t mean it isn’t there, ravaging various organs and draining bank accounts. In order to remove stigma, we must not only teach ourselves to react with compassion but also make an effort to learn more about lupus. Rather than judging on appearance, we should offer support and kindness and ask questions when appropriate. As a co-chair of the Congressional Lupus Caucus, I am committed to spreading education and awareness so that we can drive down the time it takes for diagnosis. I am committed to advocating for more research dedicated to lupus so that we can learn what triggers this mysterious disease and find a cure. I am hopeful that my con-

Once again, two nights ago, liberal hypocrisy was on full display at the White House Correspondents’ Association’s (WHCA) annual dinner. The dinner was begun in the early 1920s and usually the incumbent president and vice president of the United States attend. It is supposed to be a time of merriment and humor; but over time, it has become more and more of a liberal lovefest for the journalistic community in Washington, D.C. Members of this group brag about their supposed storied history, but as is habit with liberal journalists, they only tell you what they want you to know. The first thing one should do is take special note of is the first word in its name. I rest my case. What’s not included in their own historical narrative is the fact that they didn’t allow women to join until 1962. WHCA leaders were forced to change that policy figuratively at gunpoint. In 1962, iconic journalist, Helen Thomas urged President Kennedy not to attend the dinner unless the WHCA changed their policy on female membership in the organi-

zation. They agreed and Kennedy attended the event. The other thing the WHCA won’t tell you is that in their more than one century of existence, they only had one Black journalist to head the group, Robert M. Ellison of the Sheridan Broadcasting Network, and have only had one Black on their board (April Ryan, White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks). In recent years, WHCA has begun to hire noted comedians to provide the entertainment for their dinner. They have hired comedians like Sinbad, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, and Al Franken, to name a few. For this year’s dinner, they hired comedian Larry Wilmore (who is Black), the host of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central. Wilmore was an unmitigated disaster. But what was even more disastrous than Wilmore’s performance was the deafening silence from liberals to his act. You can view his unedited performance on C-SPAN’s website. His ending was what got everyone’s attention Yvette Brooks Operations Manager GM@garlandjournal.com
and not in a good way. Speaking directly to President Barack Obama, Wilmore said, “But behind that joke is the humble appreciation for the historical implications for what your presidency means. When I was a kid, I lived in a country where people couldn’t accept a Black quarterback. Now think about that. A Black man was thought by his mere color not good enough to lead a football team. And now to live in your time, Mr. President, when a Black man can lead the entire free world. Words alone do me no justice. So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100, Yo, Barry, you did it, my nigga! Obama grinned from ear to ear and gave Wilmore a bear hug. If a White comedian, especially a conservative one, had called the first Black president “my nigga he would have been immediately excoriated and rightfully so. When Trump questioned Obama’s birth certificate, the media gave the issue wall to wall coverage. The Democratic National Committee (DNC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the National Association of Colored People (NAACP), the Urban League, Al Sharpton, Joy Reed, Melissa Perry, etc. all demanded every Republican official to immediately “repudiate Trump; and
if they didn’t, these liberal groups and individuals implied that these Republicans somehow agreed with Trump’s position. I find it totally hypocritical now that these same liberal groups and individuals have all come down with a severe case of laryngitis. As of this printing, the WHCA has not issued so much as an apology to the president or the American people for the total and incomprehensible disrespect Wilmore showed towards our first elected Black president. What have we, in the Black community done, to create an environment where a person, let alone a Black person, feels comfortable calling the president of the United States “my nigga? If we can’t condemn a Black for using this insidious word, how can we justify criticizing others for doing the same thing? How can we criticize Jennifer Lopez or the Quentin Tarantino, the director of the cult classic “Pulp Fiction and “Django Unchained for using it? How can we criticize former West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd for using it on the senate floor or during an interview with “60 Minutes? Instead of Obama nervously laughing at Wilmore’s description of him, he should have immediately taken to the microphone and denounced Wilmore on
the spot. So, to all my liberal media friends, especially the Black ones, the next time Trump makes a statement you disagree with, I don’t want to hear your moralizing lectures about racism and civility. The next time a Republican official makes a stupid, racially-charged comment about Obama (and they will), I hope those same liberal members of the media will also get a sudden case of laryngitis like you did over the Wilmore foolishness. I know why Republicans are silent on this issue—they have absolutely no credibility within the Black community. But liberals “claim to love Black folks, but yet they can’t muster enough courage to take a principled stand and denounce Wilmore’s performance. What a shame this moment has found them totally unprepared for the moment that could have been their finest hour (Jackson out, **drops mic**). Buck Fernie Sanders!
Quit Playin’ by Vincent Hall
Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.
Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is the Independent Senator from Vermont, but he’s acting more like a Maryland Farmer, or a Minnesota Firefighter; you got the acronym! Bernie is cool but Buck Fernie Sanders. The majority of Democrats wanted Hillary Clinton all along. We said, with feigned sincerity, that a little intramural competition would be good for her and for us. But this Maryland Farmer, Fernie Sanders, has taken his role as a sparring partner too literally. In the words of the immortal Richard Pryor: “You can’t kick my ass and holler at me too!” Muhammad Ali allowed sparring pod’na Larry Holmes to linger and it cost him a TKO in his last ever title fight. Hillary will exit
the ropes as the winner, but bruised much too severely for what was billed to be a three-round charity event. Fernie, much like his controversial baby brother Donald Trump, whines, winnows and uses winsome words to destruct rather than construct. He throws a flurry of low blows because he’s never sustained a good punch himself. If this had been a sanctioned championship event, Fernie would’ve been knocked on his pale, puny ass and counted out in the first round. By the way...Where are his tax returns? He and Donald must use the same accountant—H&R Blockhead!! Then this punch-drunk welterweight decries with his mirror-twin Donald that the “system is rigged.” Duh...Yeah. But both parties come to their rules democratically. As certified entities they have the right
to write their own rules. Closed primaries and caucuses are there for reasons that each statewide contingency agrees on. Point of fact: Gerrymandering and closed primaries kept Blacks and Browns out of office for decades but they learned the game
and used it to their advantage. Local example: If primaries were open, Whites hostile to his “radical views” could crossover and vote County Commissioner John Wiley Price out in any primary. Conversely, Price has remained in office and drawn the 2010 voting lines that transformed Dallas County Commissioners Court from four
White Republican seats to one that has four Democrats and two solid districts, one Black and one Brown. Buck Fernie; the system works if you work. How would you feel if someone with a temporary membership demanded to be the Chairman of your churches’ trustee board or Country Club? Buck Fernie. He has no more right to commandeer the Democratic Party than I would have to change the placement of a menorah at Temple Israel. The concept that membership has privileges is not just a catchy line for a credit card commercial — it’s a democratic imperative. Many Gems find congruence in wanting Democratic Party Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz replaced. But if Fernie’s followers leave with him so be it. I wouldn’t vote for him regardless. Real progressives want to get the growing number of homeless and ex-offenders into housing.
5
They want to redirect wealth so that mental illness and drug addicted Americans are made our first priority. It’s not just America’s infrastructure that’s collapsed; our will to foster compassion for anyone other than our own has dissipated. Democrats shouldn’t cast votes based on whom the polls say has a better chance of beating Donald Trump. Trump will beat himself. I’ll give you 5-1 odds and an autographed picture of Don King if I’m wrong. Seriously, I love the populism Bernie Sanders started his preliminary bouts with. But over the past three months Fernie has morphed into some angry, unrealistic pugilist and villain. I was feeling Bernie, but Buck Fernie and those Maryland Farmers who are shallow enough to believe the “system” was rigged to keep them out. Just because Democrats love everybody doesn’t mean they have to accept being threatened by anybody!! #AndaFightComeWithIt!!!
Hillary subjected to different standard on Emails by George E. Curry (George Curry Media Columnist)
In the larger scheme of things, the long-awaited 83-page report on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server by the State Department’s inspector general was no where as damming as the media circus surrounding its release would lead you to believe. Clearly, she made some poor decisions - which she took far too long to acknowledge - and she ignored repeated suggestions that she dump the private server, with one staffer being sternly told not to bring up the subject again. A column in Forbes by Charles Tiefer places the controversy in its proper context. He wrote, “[The report] does not add any new serious charges or adverse facts. And, it shows she was less out of line with her predecessors, notably Colin Powell, than has been charged.” Tierfer continued, “...To the extent that she is criticized because ‘she did not comply with the Department’s policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act,’
the report is making a legal judgment that is not particularly strong. Note how she is not labeled as violating any statute, but rather, a real mouthful of mush ‘the Department’s policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act.’ So we are talking about obscure, dull, bureaucratic policies. Not a criminal statute. Not even a civil statute - just the bureaucratic policies. “A report that says so little new against Clinton, amounts to a vindication.” But you wouldn’t know it by all the “breaking news” stories on cable TV. Or, the newspaper coverage, for that matter. The Washington Post published a blistering editorial under the headline, “Clinton’s inexcusable, willful disregard for the rules.” The editorial began, “Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2013 has been justifiably criticized as an error of judgment. What the new report from the State Department inspector general makes clear is that it also was not a casual oversight. Ms. Clinton had plenty of warnings to use official government communications methods, so as to make sure that her records were prop-
erly preserved and to minimize cybersecurity risks. She ignored them.” Keep in mind, as CNN observed, “Experts have said it doesn’t appear Clinton violated federal laws.” Let’s contrast that to far more serious misconduct during the George W. Bush administration. In 2007, it was disclosed that the Bush administration had created a private Internet domain called gwb43.com (for George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. president) on which they were conducting official government business. Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff, reportedly used the private account to conduct 95 percent of his communications, ostensibly political matters forbidden by federal law. The account was controlled by the Republican National Committee. Under federal law, the White House is required to maintain all records pertaining to presidential decision-making. The existence of the server became public when it was discovered that J. Scott Jennings, the White House deputy director of political affairs, had used the account to discuss the firing of one of eight U.S. attorneys dismissed for political reasons. When Democrats took control of Congress and started looking into whether the U.S. attorneys had been fired for purely political reasons, it was announced that as many as 22 million emails may have been “lost” from the priwww.garlandjournal.com
vate gwb43.com server, including nearly all relating to the fired federal attorneys. The media reaction was in sharp contrast to how it has treated the disclosures about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Media Matters observed, “The White House email story broke on a Wednesday. Yet on that Sunday’s Meet The Press, Face The Nation, and Fox News Sunday, the topic of millions of missing White House emails did not come up. At all. (The story did get covered on ABC’s This Week.) “By comparison, not only did every network Sunday news show this week cover the story about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton emails, but they were drowning in commentary. Between Meet the Press, Face The Nation, This Week, and Fox News Sunday, Clinton’s ‘email’ or ‘emails’ were referenced more than 100 times on the programs, according to Nexis transcripts.” It continued, “How did the Washington Post and New York Times commentators deal with the Bush email scandal in the week following the confirmation of the missing messages? In his April 17, 2007 column, Post columnist Eugene Robinson hit the White House hard. But he was the only Post columnist to do so. On the editorial page, the Post cautioned that the story of millions of missing White House emails might not really be a ‘scandal.’ Instead, it was possible, the Post suggested, that Rove and
others simply received ‘sloppy guidance’ regarding email protocol.” In case you missed the point, the watchdog group said, “Just to repeat: In 2007, the story was about millions of missing White House emails that were sought in connection to a Congressional investigation. Yet somehow the archiving of Clinton’s emails today requires exponentially more coverage, and exceedingly more critical coverage.” “Of course, back in 2007 Fox News seemed utterly uninterested in the Bush email story days after the news broke. A search of Fox archives locates only one panel discussion about the story and it featured two guests accusing Democrats of engineering a ‘fishing expedition.’ “From then-Fox co-host, Fred Barnes: “I mean, deleted e-mails, who cares?” No one - unless it involves Hillary Clinton. Black Women Beware:
Are Our Hair Products Killing Us?
By Danielle James Atlanta Daily World
A bombshell new report from Black Women for Wellness, an LA-based advocacy and research group dedicated to the health and wellness of Black women, released a 60page document this spring with shocking finds linking many major hair care brands to toxic and poisonous chemicals. The report, titled Natural Evolutions: One Hair Story accuses the hair care and personal care industry of lacking regulation as well as causing major health problems among Black women. We aim to expand healthcare access, reduce toxic hair care chemicals that are prevalent in our community and build political advocacy in California and beyond. ~ Black Women for Wellness, Mission Statement After five years of research (including data collection, focus groups, and historical research), the research indicates that our beauty routines may be contributing to our demise. The consistent exposure to certain products is affecting our health. HelloBeautiful spoke exclusively to Teni Adewumi, Environmental Justice Research and Policy Analyst for Black Women for Wellness, explaining the reasoning for conducting this study. “There wasn’t a lot of literary information on the products that we use and what that specifically means for Black women. The little information and the little research we found was not very promising. We wanted to know what group of black women might be most impacted.” “Really looking at the products we use as Black women, we use these products more frequently than any other ethnic group. We wanted to know if these products were affecting us in any kind of way.” ~ Teni
Adewumi on why Black Women for Wellness conducted this study Black women and girls already have a disadvantage and overwhelming burden as a result of disparities in health care. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the United States’ largest philanthropy dedicated to health, estimates Latinos and African-Americans experience 30 to 40 percent poorer health outcomes than white Americans. Our hair health is at risk due to lack of information of products, affecting the safety of hair dressers, and causing serious health issues including respiratory problems, obesogens, and cancer at higher rates than our female counterparts of other races. Here are the findings from the report: Reproductive Issues The American Journal of Epidemiology determined that the use of hair relaxers is linked to uterine fibroids in Black women and girls. This will affect approximately 80% of Black women over their lifetime. The study interviewed more than 23,000 Black women across the span of 12 years (1997-2009) and found two-to-three times higher rates of fibroids among Black women. The possi-
bility of unregulated and untested chemicals as well as the amount of chemicals we place in our hair and scalp is potentially dangerous. While Black Women for Wellness admit that there is still more testing needed to determine birth outcomes and the use of hair care products, they do present information regarding the links between miscarriage, low birth weight, and chemicals found in products used by hair dressers that are causing some concern. They bring light to the fact that even though the national rates of infant mortality have been decreasing, “Black women still have rates of infant death 2.2 times higher than White women (11.46 to 5.18 respectively).” Respiratory Issues The One Hair Story research paper called out a UK study that estimated 14-20% of cosmetology students drop out during their first two years due to contact dermatitis. 7 out of 10 hairstylists will likely suffer a form of work-related dermatitis during their career. “Hair care professionals work with many chemicals that are known to adversely affect the respiratory

Texas Bar Foundation announces grant for Community Lawyering Center Pilot Program UNT Dallas College of Law’s pilot program for two new Community Lawyering Centers is receiving grant support from the Texas Bar Foundation for a one-year period beginning April 22, 2016. The grant of $23,600 made to UNT Dallas Foundation will be used to support implementation of the law school’s new Community Lawyering Center locations in downtown Dallas and in the Frazier-Fair Park community in south Dallas. UNT Dallas College of Law, in collaboration with three major legal service providers, announced the opening of two Community Lawyering Centers on April 27, 2016 at a reception held at the law school’s downtown campus. The new Community Lawyering Centers introduce a unique neighborhood-based approach to delivering legal services to underserved communities in Dallas County. For the first time, four legal service providers have joined together to leverage their collective resources to expand capacity for delivering legal services in Dallas. Joining the College of Law are Legal Aid of North-West Texas, Dallas County Public Defender’s Office, and CitySquare’s Legal Action Works (LAW). In addition, the Dallas County Dispute Resolution Center will provide experienced mediators to supervise law students. Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $16 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charity-funded bar foundation. Royal Furgeson, Founding Dean of UNT Dallas College of Law, praised the Texas Bar
Prof. Cheryl Watley Foundation for their grant support. “This funding will help expand capacity for legal services in Dallas County and will assist the College of Law with our actions to improve access to justice for underserved communities.” The Community Lawyering Centers are designed to deliver a comprehensive approach that includes direct legal representation, education, and community outreach. “By taking our students to underserved communities, we will be teaching them a holistic approach to representation, nurturing their interest in public service law, and introducing them to the breadth of the needs of under-resourced communities,” says Professor Cheryl Wattley. Expanding capacity for legal services plus community impact. The collaboration of professionals and educators from multiple institutions and disciplines allows the Centers to deliver a wide range of multi-disciplinary educational and community programming to the citizens in the surrounding community. This holistic approach to assisting clients with both legal services and related community educational programming is not commonly found in tradition law school legal clinics, according to UNT Dallas College of Law Professor
Wattley, who also serves as Director of Experiential Education at the law school. “Our approach provides community impact far beyond legal assistance,” says Wattley. Chief Public Defender for Dallas County, Lynn Pride Richardson, called the multi-disciplinary collaboration a “direct assault on poverty.” The College of Law, a new public law school, seated its first class in fall 2014. The law students from that Inaugural class are now the first law students who will staff the new Centers alongside supervising attorneys. Maria Thomas-Jones, Deputy Director of Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT), announced at the event that LANWT will provide three supervising attorneys for the Community Lawyering Centers. The attorneys will supervise the participating law students in the delivery of essential legal services through advocacy, community education, and direct litigation and positively impact the lives of low-income individuals and improve impoverished communities. “LANWT and the UNT Dallas School of Law will train future lawyers in practical legal advocacy in addition to cultivating in the students a stronger sense of ongoing community responsibility as legal professionals and future community leaders,” says Thomas-Jones. Lynn Pride Richardson, Chief Public Defender, praised the vision of the community-based law centers and the ability to bring them into operation through cooperation across multiple service providers. “The additional capacity to serve more clients is important to the community, and we are pleased to contribute to the effort,” said Richardson.
Both Community Lawyering Centers operate away from the law school campus to deliver legal services in underserved neighborhoods, close to where potential clients live. The proximity removes transportation barriers that frequently make accessing legal services difficult for clients. The Centers operate with daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, another important difference for clients. ”We understand that our clients may not be able to take off from work. They should not have to choose between earning money for their families and having access to legal representation,” says Professor Wattley. Being close by also reduces the time and expense of trans-

portation by clients to legal clinics, which can sometimes involve multiple bus routes and long commutes for each appointment. Dean Furgeson recognized a number of organizations that are actively collaborating in expanding plans for the Community Lawyering Centers, including: • El Centro College Paralegal Program • Texas A&M University – Commerce School of Social Work • Dallas County Juvenile Justice Dept. • Café Momentum • Unlocking Doors • Children’s Health • Working in Neighborhoods Strategically (WINS) • YMCA • UNT Dallas Urban In-
stitute • J.L. Turner Legal Association, Probate Section • Caruth Police Institute • Dallas Public Library • City of Dallas, Community Prosecutors • Dallas County Library • Children at Risk The Community Lawyering Center – Downtown is located within CityWalk at 511North Akard. CityWalk is also the home base for Legal Action Works (LAW), one of the legal service providers partnering in the concept. CityWalk and Law Actions Works are both programs of CitySquare, a community development organization offering a comprehensive array of social services in the areas of hunger, health, housing, and hope.

edge of their fields. Among those speaking at the event will be Huffington, co-founder, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, and author of 15 books, who will discuss attaining a work/life balance. Huffington gained worldwide renown with The Huffington Post, a news and blog site she launched in May 2005 that quickly became one of the most widely read, linked to, and cited media brands on the Internet. In 2012, the site won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. She has been named to Time’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people and Forbes Most Powerful Women list. Huffington’s first book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder debuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list. Her 15th book, The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night at a Time, on the science, history and mystery of sleep, was published in April. Other speakers include: • Angela Davis, a motivational coach at the forefront of a fitness revolution. As a member of the USA Track and Field Team, Davis was a fivetime All-American who held world rankings at the 100m. She ran track professionally for Nike, and was an Olympic Trials semi-finalist and a member of the World Championship team. Davis, who will focus on the topics of health and wellness at her “Reimagine You” appearance, has encouraged thousands to believe in themselves and trust that they are already equipped for victory by incorporating her positive affirmations, momentous music and exercise. She believes her true life’s work is to help empower those who are ready for change. • J.R. Martinez, an actor, bestselling author, motivational speaker, advocate and wounded U.S. Army veteran. Martinez, a “Dancing
With the Stars” winner and “General Hospital” alum, will discuss overcoming obstacles, something he has inspired countless people around the world to do. In March 2003, Martinez was deployed to Iraq; on April 5, he was driving a Humvee in Karbala when his left front tire hit a roadside bomb. The three other soldiers in the Humvee were ejected from the burning vehicle, but Martinez was trapped inside. He suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34 percent of his body, but fought to recover and has since used his inspiring story to motivate army veterans and the burn-survivor community, as well as change the way America views disabilities. Martinez travels the world spreading his message of resilience and optimism; in addition, he can currently be seen costarring on the syndicated action series “SAF3.” • Dani Shapiro, a best-selling author. Shapiro, who will discuss the topic of spirituality, grew up the daughter of an Orthodox Jewish father and an atheist mother. Still, it took one deceptively simple question from her young son for Shapiro to embark on a spiritual journey: What did his mother believe? Shapiro’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, Elle, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and has also been broadcast on “This American Life.” In 2013, Shapiro was asked to be a guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul Sunday,” and was chosen by Arianna Huffington to speak at the New York City “Thrive” event the following year. “Reimagine You” will be held Saturday, June 11, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Majestic Theatre, 1925 Elm St., in Dallas. KINSLOW, from Page 1 Department of Public Safety Missing Persons Clearinghouse, over 46 thousand of which regarded juveniles. Such statistics are why there’s a national campaign to call attention to the thousands who go missing annually. And that is why May 25 is National Missing Children’s Day. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), pairing with Clear Channel Outdoor Americas (CCOA), has launched a new month-long effort to help generate more leads in Dallas regarding the case of Sarah Kinslow. The campaign will feature a broadcast of Sarah’s photo from the last time she was seen as well as an age progressed photo on digital billboards courtesy of CCOA. The broadcasts will occur over 1,200 times per day for an entire month in the Dallas area. “Today in particular, we are here to bring awareness to Sarah’s case,” Megan Zuraw, who spoke on behalf of the NCMEC, said. “We do believe that there is someone out there, in this area, that knows something about Sarah’s case that can assist the Greenville Police Department in finding her.” Zuraw said NCMEC is working with the Greenville Police Department as they do with other departments across the country, such as the FBI. “Since [the day of her disappearance] the Greenville Police Department has been investigating Sarah’s whereabouts and that investigation continues today,” detective Philip Spencer said. But despite the hundreds of
leads and the years of investigating, Spencer said they are not yet close to finding Sarah. “Time has definitely made things more difficult,” Spencer said. “Sometimes memories come back or people remember things differently.” He also said that the Greenville Police Department is com-
ing Children’s Day. Through the campaign, officials hope to raise awareness of local missing children in the four major Texas markets: Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and El Paso. “Children that go missing are sometimes found, but not always,” Louise Kinslow, Sarah’s mother, said. “We’re hoping that

mitted to finding Sarah and that the billboards would be a strong start. “We are turning to the public for assistance,” Spencer said. “We encourage anyone with information to please contact the Greenville Police Department.” CCOA has a partnership with NCMEC and the month-long campaign comes at no cost in recognition of National Miss-

She was great.” Sarah was reportedly last seen after her father dropped her off at Greenville Middle School on May 1, 2001. The night before she had asked to drive to school www.garlandjournal.com
her friends. A witness claimed he saw Sarah get into an older light blue Ford pickup truck near her school on the afternoon of her disappearance. It appeared to be an older Caucasian man driving the vehicle and Sarah did not attempt to flee nor did she seem to be upset with the situation. Sarah was reported seen 14 minutes away at a phone booth in
Caddo Mills, Texas shortly after her disappearance. A week after her disappearance, Sarah’s 18-year-old boyfriend, Curtis Wayne Bell, was arrested and charged with “aggravated sexual assault of a child” due to Sarah not being of a legal age to consent to sex. While Sarah’s parents did not allow her to date, they knew of Bell and his relationship with their daughter. Sarah and Bell had been dating for about two months. She wanted to marry Bell and was willing to, as recorded in her diary, run away to Mexico with him if her parents refused to let them be together. Bell said that the two discussed it, but were never serious. Bell was one of the friends who was supposed to skip school with Sarah. When Sarah went missing, she did not bring extra clothes, her toothbrush, or even her purse. Nevertheless, police believe she left on her own accord. Several of her friends failed polygraph tests regarding her disappearance, but they all disclaim any knowledge of where Sarah may be at now. Sarah has been reported as far as Oregon and British Columbia as of 2004. Investigators think she has cut her hair short and dyed it brown. Sarah Kinslow’s case is unsolved and still classified as a runaway. Although Louise misses her daughter, she is not optimistic that her child will be found. “I miss her laugh. I miss her smile. I miss her smell,” Louise said. “[But] I don’t think she’s around anymore. I feel like something has happened to her.”

Hundreds of entries received for business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza Naming Contest
Business has been even busier than it normally is the business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza after it was revealed that the co-owner, Dorothy Jones received a cease and desist letter from BlackJack Pizza Enterprises, threatening her business with legal action. The Colorado-based company with over 40 locations in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and Montana says if the Joneses don’t stop using any resemblance to the name they trademarked in 1987--three years before the Jones’ restaurant came on the scene, there would be consequences. A clearly emotional Mrs. Jones talked about how it didn’t seem fair that a name she had used almost

major chains, Mrs. Jones said she didn’t want to change the name. “I feel like it will hurt my business because people will think that we have sold it,” she said. “People are

used to seeing us here!” And that was the dream that son Terry said he had when he first approached her about opening a restaurant that while pizza was the main course, they offered a menu that included burgers, hot wings, beans and cornbread, salads and spaghetti. “We were providing a service and products to an area that others refused to value.” Since the contest to rename the business began on May 2, 2016, hundreds of entries were received. Despite numerous reports explaining the conflict regarding the name, many entries still bore the popular “Black Jack Pizza” in some variation on the form. Representing the Law School. Atty. Cheryl Wattley said that
after the contest deadline, “we (students) will do the research to make sure that all the proper paperwork has been filed” to avoid a similar situation as the one the Jones Family is facing now. The D-FW Chapter of the National Black Public Relations Society, under the leadership of President Terry Allen of 1016 Media, compiled the entries and presented them to Atty. Wattley. The winning entry will receive a large pizza and tea once a month for a year and will be featured in promotional materials. The winning entry is expected to be announced on July 3, 2016 at the Unveiling/Ribbon Cutting/ Block Party. Stay tuned for more details.

My boss has a big mouth Ask Alma: by Alma Gill
NNPA News Wire Columnist Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma.
Dear Alma, I recently joined a new company that was formed through a merger. My boss ran our department in the old company, and she still has her old title. But, with the merger, many new people have come on board, including me. She’s older than we are, and she became a manager before there were a lot of women in the company. She has very sharp elbows and a really old school command and control approach, which she clearly picked up from the men she worked with. Her most noticeable trait is that she deals with everything in front of everyone. Rather than walk over to someone’s desk, she yells orders across our office. She criticizes the junior people who haven’t met her expectations (including our only POC). She gets in arguments with the other executives in meetings. She also can’t keep a secret. I’ve told her a couple of things in confidence, only to have her repeat one of them, in capital letters, in an all staff
e-mail. I was horrified. She isn’t able to let anyone have a moment. If someone does a good job on something, she congratulates them and then talks about when she did something similar, and usually better. The person then gets overshadowed and their chance to shine is gone. She seems to be protected because the senior executive who originally brought her on board is still there. She goes to him all the time whenever a dispute comes up. She has invited me out for dinner, and has tried to get me to confide in her, but I really don’t trust her, especially after the e-mail situation. I’m afraid everything we talk about will get shared the next day. So, what are your suggestions for how I can deal with her? Signed, Wary At My Desk Dear Wary at My Desk, Pinto beans and rice! I wouldn’t wish this workplace wacko on anyone of my adversaries. Workplace 101: Any boss with sharp elbows and no
filters, can’t be trusted. I mean really, what more could you wish for – a punch in the throat? LOL. To say “ keep away” seems to me to be an understatement. So how about until she retires, you’re permanently busy. Need some examples, here you go – you’re taking a class, volunteering, feeding the homeless, giving blood. You feel me? Once, and I mean once, every four months or so, you can quickly walk for coffee. Another dinner is a definite no-no, meanwhile, just listen, nod and smile. Repeat compliments she likes to share about herself, she’ll like that. Yes, watch your back, stay two steps ahead and ride it out. You’re smart, that’s why you’re there. You’ve been around long enough to recognize the rules of the game, determine your role and play it. Do your best, be your best, that’s all that’s really required. Judging from her past jungle fury – I pray it doesn’t happen again, but you and I know better. Stay focused, prepared and on point. If and when she throws you to the wolves, no worries. Contemplate your next move with confidence, conquering in your Louboutins. You’re a spearhead, always ahead of the pack.
