Questions from a Black Man (Open Letter to America from Royce West)
Why are you afraid ... of ME? Is it because of the color of my skin? My APPEARance? The way I talk or walk, or dress? Are you set off by my mannerisms? Or have the lessons taught about me at YOUR home, crept outside? Do lessons learned at school, or in some books paint the pictures you see when you see ME? Or is it the awful images of me portrayed by television programs or in videos? In your heart of hearts, what preconceived beliefs do you have about me as I stand before you? What baggage do you arrive with? What about me frightens you? Why is it that when you approach me, you feel a sense of insecurity? And when I approach you, fear shows in your eyes. If I ask you a question and WE disagree, why do you feel disrespected? Is it the tone in my voice? Or my demeanor during our discussions? Is fault found with the words I use? What is it? Does my age not matter? If I respond politely to your inquiry or not, what changes? How is it easier for you to grant men of other ethnicities the regard you deny to me? Why then, is your first response to my misstep, the label of criminal? No matter my test score or achievement, no level makes me worthy, or successful in your eyes. Why? If I have done the work and earned a place at the table, why is it difficult for you to listen to my recommendations; often discarding them only to agree when someone else restates my idea? And, why am I condemned for wanting the same things you desire? Respect, A family, Access to a first class education, A job where I can make a decent living and a contribution, and To be secure in my home and community. Can you understand why a grown man would not like to be called “boy? Will you OPEN your HEART to feel what I feel? Can you OPEN up your HAND and reach out for mine? Can you OPEN up your MOUTH and speak the truth? Will you OPEN up your MIND to my experiences and in doing so OPEN your EYES to your reality as ME? Maybe then, you wouldn’t be afraid. We’ve asked these questions for generations. I hope and pray that our sons and grandsons don’t have to ask them again. July 15, 2016 Royce West is a Texas State Senator, representing District 23.

EDITORIAL/OPINION
After the Horror, We Must Build One America By Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition via George Curry Media
“It is more dangerous to be Black in America. You’re substantially more likely to be in a situation where police don’t respect you. The speaker was not Barack Obama; it was former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Even a conservative firebrand such as Gingrich was shaken by videos showing Black men killed by police in Baton Rouge and suburban St. Paul. Then, the lone assassin in Dallas shot and killed five police officers and wounded seven more. Grief, fear and anger spread. The challenge now - for every concerned American - is how we react to the injustice and the violence. We know that our justice system suffers from massive and systematic racism. It is more dangerous to drive while Black. African Americans are more likely to be stopped, more likely to be searched, more likely to be arrested if stopped, more likely to be charged if arrested, and more likely to be jailed if convicted. The budget of many small towns is based upon
the fines, penalties and fees largely paid for by African-American offenders. Police, state’s attorneys and judges tend to have a shared perspective, an organizational kinship. How do we respond? After the shootings of Philando Castile in Minneapolis and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La. - as after Ferguson, Mo. and Baltimore and more - nonviolent demonstrations spread across the country. Whites joined with Blacks and Latinos and Asian-Americans to call for an end to the killings, for justice, for the recognition that Black Lives Matter. These are the tactics taught by Jesus, Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, not because they were scared of violence but because they were wise about change. Nonviolence condemns the sin, but not the sinner. It indicts the injustice by forcing recognition of our shared humanity. It summons the better angels of our character, not the bitter angers of our fears. We must choose reconciliation over retaliation and revenge. This is a teachable moment if we are finally willing to learn that too many guns, too much injustice and growing disparities is a lethal cocktail. It is unfair to associate this terrorist attack with our long struggle for peace and justice for all. This crime has endangered those who would protest nonviolently against injustice. It
roused fears and spread hatred. The reactionary will use his crimes to try to discredit the reform movement. Police across the country will be even more on guard. Violence isn’t an answer; it is sabotage. America is scarred by what has become routine violence. There is good news. The murder rate is dropping. The number of police killed in the line of duty is lower in recent years than it was in earlier decades. But according to the tally of the Washington Post, 509 people have been shot by police to date in 2016, a pace slightly ahead of last year’s. And gun violence continues to take a grisly toll. The cameras that now are everywhere have begun to expose to America the reality that people of color have known all too well. Now people of good conscience must come together and demand change. This will take multiracial coalitions, electoral mobilization and peaceful protest. But the camera’s eye shows us only a glimpse of the symptoms; it does not reveal the roots of the disease. The camera lens can reveal the police abuse, breaking the curtain of silence. But it does not show the roots of the problem. The reality is that there are still two Americas. We’ve overcome legal racial segregation but we haven’t overcome legal resource segregation in schools, jobs, contracts, investments, ac-
cess to capital, technology and deal flow. Poor African Americans and Latinos are more likely to be crowded into impoverished neighborhoods, marked by drugs and guns, by violent streets and broken schools, unemployment and crushed hopes. Police are tasked to keep order amid the despair. It is an impossible job. Yes, we need justice when police officers brutalize the innocent. We need more training, more cameras, more community relations, and new community forms of policing. We need to end the racial disparities in arrests, searches, sentencing and more. But the police will still be in an impossible position unless we get serious about making this one America, in redressing the lack of jobs, the broken schools, the shortage of affordable housing, the lack of health care and drug treatment, the shortage of parks and recreational facilities. That is why we need a White House conference on the two Americas, on racial disparity, poverty and reconstruction. We need a plan for jobs, for rebuilding our impoverished neighborhoods, for replacing guns with books and drugs with hope. Without that, the camera lens will continue to reveal that the horrors and the crimes are continuing, and the spiral of hate and fear deepening.
WILLIAMS: It all adds up TriceEdney — Like millions, I am shocked and appalled by the needless killing of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and 5 Dallas police officers. Respect for humanity requires that we reject, in the strongest terms, the unwarranted and unjustified taking of life. I search earnestly for answers to the “Why? of their Dr. E. Faye Williams executions and the reason that, after 240 years, our nation still sustains a level of racial hatred and intolerance that fuels these acts of violence. Anyone giving an honest look at our national tragedy of racial violence, especially the recent epidemic of cop-on-citizen homicide, will agree that we, as a nation, have a conflict of major proportion that must be addressed and resolved if any of us are to live with the assurance of even a modicum of peace. of violence and retaliation can only lead to our mutual destruction. As an attorney and counselor, I’m not unfamiliar with the mediation process and the genuine effort it takes to accomplish conciliation between aggrieved parties. Accomplishing a successful negotiation between conflicting entities is, more often than not, a monumental task. Those who practice this type of negotiation will usually identify 3 essential requirements for success: 1.) There must be agreement between parties as to the nature of the conflict; 2.) the conflicting parties must communicate in a “common language; and 3.) the conflicting parties must communicate honestly without ulterior motive or deceit. Although I don’t profess to offer an empirical evaluation of these elements of resolution as they apply to our “national disgrace, I can offer a personal evaluation based upon years of observation. First, there appears to be insufficient understanding and agreement as to the nature of our problem among those with the authority and responsibility to make constructive change. My as-

sessment is that few, with the exception of those experiencing racial discrimination, understand the cumulative effect of discriminatory acts. I’m reminded of the old adage that one can only beat a dog for so long before he’ll attack out of the rage and frustration of receiving needless beatings. Unlike the time when some of us were conditioned into accepting the indignities of discrimination just “as a matter of the way things were, most Black people are no longer willing to accept these indignities that accumulate in our psyches and eventually distort our relationships with others and our place in the world. Some of us are more inclined to strike back in ways, as futile as they might be, that we believe will express the full scope of our rage and frustration, and bring some measure of justice and retribution against those who harm us. Too many whites feign ignorance of racial discrimination impacting our community and that these acts are more than isolated incidents which have little or no connection to a larger reality. They don’t see that with each act of racial injustice or violence, there’s a corresponding increase

in the level of anger in our communities. They see our communities disconnected by geography, but fail to see that we’re connected by an understanding of our common potential as victims of the same injustice. Lacking a common understanding of the problem, there’s little hope that we can establish reasoned dialogue. We’re speaking uncommon languages to each other. I refer to those who listened to Rudy Giuliani attempt to explain that, instead of police violence, the real problem in our community is Black-onBlack violence. Failing to acknowledge multi-generational practices that’ve left many of us unable to compete economically or to maintain minimal parity with whites, Giuliani doubled-down on justifying disparate and unethical policing practices in Black communities. His motives are clear. Giuliani, like too many others, wishes to maintain the social status quo–so nothing changes. Dr. E. Faye Williams can be reached at: www.nationalcongressbw.org.

Quit Playin’ by Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.
This is a reprint from June 28, 2010. Chief Brown survived then and survived being fired by a covert group of haters just eight weeks ago. We’ve had the usual post-tragedy Kumbaya coteries and “We are the world” worship services. Now Dallas needs a codified master plan to end child poverty, food deserts, educational disparities/segregation and the growing apathy for homelessness in Dallas. Dallas needs a window seat! “So can I get a window seat, don’t want nobody next to me. I just want a ticket outta town a look around; and a safe touch down. I just want a chance to fly, a chance to cry, and a long bye
HALL: Can I get a Window Seat? bye.”- Erykah Badu, Window Seat 2010 Erykah Badu must have had a premonition. Her infamous third eye and earthy insights have proven providential. She caught our eye as she walked out of her clothes and into the spotlight during the “Window Seat” video. But her lyrics went farther than the eye could see. Whether we admit it or not, most of us occupy the aisle seat near Erykah wishing she would trade with us. Life is complicated these days as we look into the window of a future that is uncertain and unbelievable. Who could have imagined the BP Oil spill and who knows how the slick saga will end? Who among us seriously conjured up the thought of a Black President, and what does all the hatred he receives mean for the future of race relations? And just to bring it clos-
er to home, who would have thought that Dallas would be in the throes of a controversy so hurtful, harmful an ugly that we wince at the thought? How is it that a man we held in such high regard has had to endure the worst Father’s Day imaginable, and be treated so
Dallas Police Chief David Brown
callously and indifferent in the midst of his grief? Dallas Police Chief David Brown, and oh how I love to call
him Chief, has to have suffered through a nightmare unfit for even the worst criminal. In a senseless volley of events, his own son produced the worst nightmare imaginable to his profession. Chief Brown’ first priority is to protect and serve the citizens of Dallas. But as an officer who has risked his own life for 30 years he’s equally committed to protecting those who are charged to protect us. If I could, I would reserve him a window seat. I’m sure he wants a ticket outta town, a chance to fly, a chance to cry and a long bye bye. But as the chief dispatcher of Dallas’s safety and well being, he can’t escape. Chief Brown has been left to face the worst irony and tragedy of his life in plain view for his fans and foes to see. Let me be real. I understand the enormity of an officer being shot down in the line of duty. But the loss of life to a hard
5 working young father is equally as important to those who knew and loved him. The Brown family’s grief and agony was multiplied by the circumstances surrounding this incident. The Chief’s home life and work life merged in a most unfortunate way. This community does not need a fall guy it needs to fall in line. The time wasted pointing fingers at the Chief and at the Lancaster PD is sad on a number of levels. Instead of questioning Chief Brown’s fitness for duty, perhaps we should question our failings as a community. This drama could have been played out by any of our children. Other than Erykah, nobody loves a window seat more than me. But if the Chief asked me, I would give mine up. Take the time to fly, cry and say your goodbyes. Chief, we love you, we pray for you, and we’ll fight for you if it becomes necessary.
O’Reilly says MLK would not have supported Black Lives Matter SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by George E. Curry (George Curry Media Columnist)
Fox News Host Bill O’Reilly escalated his ongoing attack on the Black Lives Matter Movement by asserting without a hint of evidence that if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive, he would not support the group. “With all due respect to President Obama, well-meaning activists do not associate themselves with a group that often commits violent acts, and encourages violence through irresponsible rhetoric. Dr. King would not participate in a Black Lives Matter protest,” he said in a Fox News commentary. First, Black Lives Matter does not, contrary to O’Reilly’s assertion, often commit violent acts or encourage violence through what he characterized as irresponsible rhetoric. He is part of the crowd that thinks the chant of “Black Lives Matter” should be discarded in favor of “All Lives Matters.” Forever trying to bridge the gap between Blacks and Whites, President Obama explained the nuances associated with the phrase. “I think it’s important for us to also understand that the phrase ‘black lives matter’
simply refers to the notion that there’s a specific vulnerability for African Americans that needs to be addressed,” he told a gathering of enforcement officials, civil rights leaders, elected officials and activists recently in Washington, D.C. “We shouldn’t get too caught up in this notion that somehow people who are asking for fair treatment are somehow, automatically, anti-police, are trying to only look out for Black lives as opposed to others. I think we have to be careful about playing that game.” It’s a game O’Reilly plays well, which is why he has the gall to claim that Dr. King would not support the Black Lives Matter Movement. Credible civil rights leaders strongly disagree. Bernard LaFayette, Jr., who worked with Dr. King as a field organizer and now chairs the board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the organization Dr. King co-founded, said: “Dr. King supported the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee [SNCC] so it stands to reason that he would support Black Lives Matter as long as they practice nonviolence.” Rep. John Lewis knows that from firsthand experience. As chairman of the upstart SNCC, he participated in numerous marches
with Dr. King, including the 1963 March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery, Ala. March that led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Lewis has praised the Black Lives Matter Movement and quoted Dr. King, as he did at a recent protest in the Capitol, by saying, “ The time is always right to do what is right.” O’Reilly, never a King supporter, opposes many of the things Dr. King fought for during
his lifetime, including affirmative action. Nothing in his background qualifies him to be an expert on what Dr. King would say or do if he were still alive. Those who are active in the Civil Rights Movement today have no doubts that Dr.
www.garlandjournal.com
King would be supportive of the young people who make up the core of Black Lives Matter. “Dr. King would enthusiastically embrace the philosophy and activism which inspires Black Lives Matter because every life matters,” said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League. “The continuing disparities and unequal treatment most apparent in but not limited to the police/ community relations and the criminal justice system demonstrates that all lives have not mattered equally. “Black Lives Matter sends a powerful wake-up call to our nation in the same way that a young Dr. King activist of the 50s and 60s shook the foundation of the segregated South.” This was not the first time O’Reilly has disparaged Black Lives Matter. On July 8, he told Hilary Shelton, Washington bureau chief of the NAACP: “I think that if you really want, if African Americans really want to bring the country together and have good racial relations, they have to distance themselves from Black Lives Matter.” Instead of doing that, Shelton distanced himself from O’Reilly’s advice. “I believe in my conversations with leaders of Black Lives Matter, and even my participation in a demonstration in which we
marched from the capitol building here in Washington, D.C., to the front of the White House in a very peaceful demonstration with a number of members of Congress. In much the same way those marched in Dallas, Texas, we saw things very differently. We have to take on those issues in a very significant way,” Shelton said. “Let us not forget two things, Bill. Number one is that those marches were for good reasons. Indeed, if we look at the disparities and the attacks of African-Americans and the killings of African-Americans by police officers, even unarmed African-Americans, the numbers and the data is important as well... and we look at the data, we see that twice as many African-Americans and unarmed African-Americans are shot by police officers than White Americans in our society. That raises a problem.” And the problem is that Bill O’Reilly and others of his ilk prefer to blame the Black Lives Matter Movement for how they react to police disproportionately killing African Americans rather than police misconduct that precipitated the marches. Truth is...Living a healthy life
By Dr. Keisha Lankford It’s true, it’s time to re-organize! I work in Criminal Justice, with offend-
ers! They are important people too! They have so much more to offer than their label. People don’t understand,we judge, condemn, criticize one another and expect others to respect us! We must uplift and encourage one another, especially our young men. Hurt people, hurt people! I teach some of the most focused high school students in Dallas to become Law Enforcement Professionals. I also teach college students about societal impact! All of my students in each arena have experienced hurt! And may have also hurt others! We have to educate that our value is so important, and we must handle ourselves as such and hold ourselves and others accountable!
What all motorists need to know! By Royce West TX State Senator Some months ago, in the aftermath of the events that would result in the untimely and needless death of Sandra Bland, my thoughts began to ponder the things that could be done to possibly prevent similar incidents from happening again. The wheels to this were placed in motion long before America was stunned by the tragedy that took place in a St. Paul, Minnesota suburb a few days ago. The quest would lead to me contacting the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). My inquiry of them was on how we could develop instructions to Texas drivers on how they should respond to officers in instances when a vehicle stop takes place. It sounds so simple. It sounds like something that we as experienced drivers should already know. But it is a situation that has resulted in unfortunate tragedy when these routine occurrences somehow quickly spiral out of control. While this happens hundreds, even thousands of times across America daily without incident, each encounter also produces the anxiety of the unknown for those charged with protecting the public safety. One more harmful incident is one too many. I have asked DPS to draft language that would be placed in its Texas Driver Handbook, the instruction manual that is given to driver license applicants. These same instructions should also be a component
of training materials for all cadets who seek to join the ranks of the 59,000 licensed Texas Peace Officers. In developing this language, we would assemble a workgroup comprised of stakeholders that includes not only the input of law enforcement, but that of community members and advocates, as well as academics and other related governmental entities. It has been suggested that these instructions may need to be incorporated into high school curriculum. Additional instructions should also be included in the driver license manual for concealed handgun license (CHL) holders. While word of this type instruction that Black parents have preached, particularly to their sons for years has filtered out to mainstream America recently, some - fed up over too many fatal interactions - have questioned why we need to give special instructions to our kids? My answer to them is that this issue, these instructions, are for everyone; they have no age limits, they are gender and even race neutral. They can help drivers in Dallas, Amarillo, Laredo or Texarkana. They could ease anxieties in Ohio or Georgia or Maine if the idea catches on. We cannot afford to not pursue the greater good, while wringing our hands to try to find the perfect. We've all been witness that mistakes can and do happen. I repeat, one more harmful incident is one too many.
Time to change the conversation, change the culture! We can re-organize at the “Morgan House,” that’s actually what Lankford Avenue does everyday! Just last night my student shared that he accidentally killed his cousin at age nine. He said, he knew more about crime at nine growing up in the Pleasant Grove area, than he does now as an adult. Can you guess which class he was in? Was he a college student or an offender? Well, it wasn’t the offenders’ class! My point is everyone has or will go through struggles. We should take the labels off and treat all as we would like to be treated! My student stated that he was removed from the environment, became an athlete and “focused his anger and energy on the field.”
We should promote their potential! The struggle is real! The most distinct cultural improvements we consider is our thinking, conversations, spirituality, effective involved parenting and accountability! The African American race is strong and talented and resilient! God has given us exactly what we need, that’s why so many people including officers are intimidated! Nevertheless officers must be held accountable, cultural sensitivity training must be reinforced, and all the officers that hate or are afraid of the black race should find another profession, and that is a very nice way of saying, they should take their ... home! #ConvictionsInBatonRougeOfficersUnjustifiedMurder!

KWTXR is based on the fictitious character KaraWalkerTexasRanger. It’s a mixed media exhibit that memorializes African American victims of police shootings over the past 25 years. Its central theme is a fantasy narrative in which the character time travels and reverses the outcome of the victim’s confrontations with police. Milestone On Her Own
A conversation with Chrisette Michele Photo and Story By Eva D. Coleman
Multitalented artist and vocal powerhouse Chrisette Michele has released her fifth studio album, Milestone, this time via her own record label. The Rich Hipster CEO inked a distribution deal with Capitol/Caroline Records, and is currently on tour, wowing Milestoners everywhere she goes. Not only has she taken charge of her music career, she’s delved into a comfort zone of free expression of thought. Learn more and be inspired from our Q&A about her elevation to this level. EC: Milestone means so many things. I look at it as a growth album for you because it’s a little different from what you’ve traditionally done. Tell me about the whole concept for how Milestone came to be. CM: It started about two years ago. It was 10 years into the music industry and I said, ‘you know what, that’s a milestone.’ And so I wanted to just write something that was the biggest thing I’d ever done. And so to me that meant I have to outplay every musician, I have to outsing every singer, I have to outwrite every lyricist because after 10 years, you should have learned something. We recorded that at this great studio in Los Angeles with all these great musicians and piano players, etc. and vocalists and when I went back to listen to it, I felt like it sounded pretentious. I felt like it sounded like I was trying to sound like I could do what I was doing. And I don’t like that sound. And so, I went back into the studio and I hung out with people like Jonathan McReynolds and I got some lessons from Kirk Franklin and Kim Burrell, Mali Music, and I did something that was gospel. And I went in, performed some of that music, or ministered some of that music or SANG some of that music at MegaFest and I felt like I was preaching to the choir in that moment. And I felt like there were people who had already heard that message and I was sort of just reiterating something that they’d heard already. And I felt like those words needed to be given to someone who really needed them. I went back to the studio one more time, and I decided to have fun. Let my hair down. Not worry so much about what it means to be great, and just be who I am. And if that’s great, then good. And when I went back and listened to that, it sounded so authentic and so honest. I wasn’t afraid of if people would think it was me or not. I knew it was me. And for me, that was all that mattered. EC: The stones theme is evident throughout the entire piece. Unbreakable...stones unbreakable, These Stones...kind of a way of throwing stones back at people who are throwing stones at you. CM: Not being afraid to do that is a big deal for me. I’m always petrified to tell people when they’re wrong or when they hurt me or when they violate. My little sister says, “Oh Chrissy you violated!” Just to be able to say to somebody, you know what, I know it’s just a comments section and I know I can’t see you, and I know you’re not standing in front of
me, but that hurt me. I wrote a song about it. And then of course, the stone on my finger is Unbreakable. So yeah, the stone is evident throughout the album.
EC: About the song Edge of the Bar. The album dropped June 10th, and then just a night later, the incident in Orlando. And you talk about being free, in a free zone to love who you want to love. Tell me your thoughts on that. I don’t think that was coincidental. CM: No. Me neither. EC: I get chills even when I think about it. CM: Me too. I really do. Because...I wrote Edge of the Bar thinking about all the people who dance when I come, to like a party, right? So one time I’m at this club and I’m hosting an event. And there were all different types of people from all different lifestyles, but especially from the transgender lifestyle, and these people were chasing this person down the street and he was screaming for his life, ‘somebody help me, somebody help me.’ And that was the first time that I had seen any sort of violence in that space with my own eyes. You know, I had heard about that happening, with people being beat to death and things like that, or killed just because of, you know, who they loved. And so Edge of the Bar was written to that person. To another person on my Instagram who I won’t out, but I just know that, that part of me speaks to him. And then to just people who want to dance in the same room. How tragic that people were dancing, do you know what I mean, when that happened? I think that’s the hardest part for us all to swallow is, but they were dancing, do you know? EC: I still get chills. CM: And you should. It should be something that we feel. You know, we get so desensitized in our country now when things happen, and we feel like we’re not supposed to experience it because it happens everyday. So then I won’t experience it. But, as an artist, I experience these things every single time they happen and I’m highly sensitive. And as an artist, I can feel things before they happen sometimes. And Edge of the Bar was one of those instances. EC: On another side, I love Indy Girl. In that, it’s just the whole album is real honest. Indy Girl is talking about, yeah, you’re independent, but you’d rather be holding someone’s hand instead of the purse, you know. Talk about where that came from.
CM: So people ask me what my biggest fears are, and so I say, answers from the artist or celebrity side, but in my heart side, my biggest fear is never to have a home. Do you know? Never to have a family. It was never to become engaged, or for anybody to love me for who I am. And so Indy Girl was the most emotional song that I recorded. I had to ask everybody to leave because I just got so broken up singing the words. And even after getting engaged, I had written that song because it was a memory that I despised. That feeling of ‘making it‘ and wondering if you’ll ever be loved. EC: When I think about real, sensual, Private Destination to me is the most sensual song. Where did all of that come from?
CM: So, I always told my mom that I’d wait until I was with the one who I’d be with forever before I explored that side of my self musically. I never wanted to explore that, and then, embarrass my whole family, do you know? So, I am a very sensual individual. I always have been. It’s just something that I wanted to be respectful about, you know, especially for my family. We have a family Facebook page and I’d be devastated if any of my aunts or uncles was like, ‘the blood of Jesus,’ do you know what I mean, when they listen to my music. So I had to make sure I was (holds up hand) taken. EC: How did the name Milestoners, for your followers, come about? CM: Every album, when we did Epiphany, it was Epiphany Family. When we did I Am, people would define themselves and give themselves a name. When I wrote Super Chris, people would give themselves a superhero name. It’s always fun to have the fans identify themselves within the music. We find new meanings and they give me new insight as to what I actually wrote, which is kinda crazy. EC: You’re very active with your fans on social media. I know you respond to them. Sometimes people are living for likes, or living for retweets or things like that. How about when fans get too close? If gives this false sense of connectedness. Can you talk about that a little bit? CM: I try to keep that time for when I have something to share. So, I try to keep that time, say if I have a play out, or if I have an album out, or if I’m
www.garlandjournal.com
going out on a tour. And then when I don’t have anything to share, I try and stay away from it. I put more like quotes, or ways that I keep my sanity, do you know what I mean? I try to give myself seasons. EC: And you are the Rich Hipster CEO! What is that like? You have your own label now.
CM: So I thought that it meant I wouldn’t have anyone to answer to, right? I thought it meant, ‘you know what, I’ll just wait six years until I finish this record. I’ll just put out three songs today.’ And really, now it means that I’m answering to the higher ups of the higher ups as opposed to the middle higher ups. So there’s this whole other tier of, you know how every pastor has a bishop? There’s this whole tier of bishops now that I have to answer to. And, I have to be responsible. I have to have response for people around me to speak with them. And I have to make sure that I’m well represented because now I’m talking to big, big, big names. Gratefully, we had a large rolodex before we got into this. It’s been 10 years in the making. And so we have wonderful people like Ruben Rodriguez who help us get music out to the country and around the world. But, it’s still answering. It’s just different people. EC: Any other artists on the label that you can speak on? CM: Sure, both of them were featured on my new album. So Meet Sims is featured on a song called Top of the World and he also was a part of Meant to Be. Then my brother, Lem Payne, was featured on a song called Zero, and he co-wrote a song with me. So yeah, there’s some new artists on Rich Hipster. EC: What do you hope people take away from the Milestone experience? CM: “Oh my God, we knew she was like that all along!” That’s kind of one thing I’m hoping deep down inside. And I hope that people have fun. We live in such a judgmental society now. Everybody feels like their opinion is the most important and incredible opinion ever said! And, I just want people to let their hair down. Sing the freakin‘ song. If you don’t like it, change the channel. But if you do, come to the show ... and then have a good time. Make a friend. Huhhhh? A friend. EC: Imagine that? CM: Imagine that? EC: And you’ll be back July 15th. CM: Yes. I can’t wait. You know, Dallas has always shown us a lot of love, and so I’m expecting that it will be a great turnout and there will be a lot of love in the room. And of course, we’ll have a meet and greet and I’ll get to say hi to everybody. The Milestone Tour comes to Dallas July 15, 2016 at Verizon Theater. The show starts at 8 p.m.

The PTSD Epidemic in our Neighborhoods
Why is she stealing from me? Ask Alma: by Alma Gill

Dear Alma,
By Glenn Ellis
George Curry Media Guest Columnist
Neighborhoods plagued by gun violence are often compared to war zones. Whether the comparison is fair or not, the chances that young men who experience trauma in their neighborhood will end up in jail are astronomically high. Studies have shown a high correlation between neighborhood disorder and physical abuse. According to the National Association for Mental Illness, some 70 percent of youths in state and local juvenile justice facilities suffer from mental health problems, which is part of a broader trend of prisons and jails becoming warehouses for the mentally ill. These youths are in many cases cut off from mental health care and from their communities and families; an untold number will be released back into society as hardened, unstable adults. Aggravating the crisis in communities, state mental health programs lost more than $4 billion in funding from fiscal year 2009 to 2012 - a cost passed down to the hospitals and courtrooms that ultimately must absorb the burden. Studies show about 8 percent of Americans suffer from PTSD at some point in their lives. But the rates appear to be much higher in communities, such as poor, largely African American pockets of Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia, where high rates of violent crime have persisted despite a national decline. A growing number of programs treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in war veterans. But far fewer treat Americans who suffer from the PTSD that comes with their ZIP code. And this kind of PTSD may be affecting even more people. PTSD can directly hurt a per-
son’s brain by messing with the amygdala, the part of the brain that triggers a chemical to release to help you decide between “fight or flight” in a threatening situation. If one is exposed to prolonged, repetitive, or extreme trauma, the amygdala stays in alert mode. And the neurons, the pathways to this part of the brain, lose their ability to recover. A person’s memory becomes corrupted like a bad computer hard drive and it can hurt a person’s ability to separate new experiences and determine whether they are safe or dangerous. The longer a person stays in the hyper-vigilant mode, the greater the chance of permanent damage. In a child, damage can be magnified and lead to problems like dissociative identity disorder. For most people, untreated PTSD will not lead to violence. But “there’s a subgroup of people who are at risk, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, of reacting in a violent way or an aggressive way, that they might not have if they had had their PTSD treated,” according to Dr. Kerry Ressler, a medical investigator and psychiatrist, who studied this issue extensively. Researchers at Drexel University in Philadelphia found that people with symptoms of PTSD may be more likely to carry a weapon in order to “restore feelings of safety.” Hospital trauma centers, which work on the front lines of neighborhood violence, could help address this lack of treatment. Indeed, the American College of Surgeons, which sets standards for the care of patients with traumatic injuries, recommends that trauma centers “evaluate, support, and treat” patients for post-traumatic stress. A trauma center is a hospital equipped and staffed to provide care for patients suffering from major traumatic injuries such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, or gunshot wounds. In light of the plethora of violence injuries from
guns and other weapons, we know all too well that it is inexcusable that more of these hospitals aren’t providing the care and treatment of the PTSD that is ever-present in these situations. But it’s not a requirement, and few hospitals appear to be doing it. The website, ProPublica surveyed a top-level trauma center in each of the 22 cities with the nation’s highest homicide rates. Just one, the Spirit of Charity Trauma Center in New Orleans, currently screens all seriously injured patients for PTSD. At another, Detroit Receiving Hospital, psychologists talk with injured crime victims about PTSD. Trauma must be recognized as a disease process. It is also age dependent; the youngest are most vulnerable. Like heart disease and cancer, trauma has identifiable causes, established means of treatment, and defined means of prevention. About six months ago, my sister moved back to our hometown with her daughter, who is 10 years old. They don’t live that far from me, its walking distance. I recently noticed when my niece comes by to visit without her mother, after she leaves, a few of my things have been missing. Never any money, mainly jewelry. I’ve never see her steal from me, but I know it has to be her. I’m hoping she isn’t a kleptomaniac and I’m not sure how to bring this to my sister’s attention. I know she misses her Dad, since they moved back and maybe she’s doing this to get attention. How would you suggest I handle this problem? Carla Hey now Carla, Once a thief, always a thief, or so that’s what they say. Yea, right, we both know that ain’t true. This email takes me back to the 1970s. I’m gonna pause a minute to tell the truth and shame the devil. Since we’re all over 50, I’m naming names – lean in close, while I whisper. I remember once Neasy, Andrea and I, got caught stealing earrings from Zayre Department Store. OMGoodness, I was scared to death! All three of us were probably 11 or 12 at the time. The thought of going to jail terrified me. Let’s just say, I never did that again, LOL.
You know it’s no secret, I have a soft spot when it comes to our kids. Don’t run and tell her mama just yet. Take the time to talk to her directly. You’re her Auntie, you got this. Your sister, I’m sure would be appalled and so angry, she’d probably punish her for life. So here’s what I’d suggest, the next time she’s over, fix a light meal and step to her directly. Place a necklace around her neck and say something like this, “Hey potato chip, have you been pilfering through my things? If you wanna borrow some of my jewelry, just ask.” I think it’s important to talk to her and use the word “borrow.” Politely ask her to return your items. Discuss how stealing is wrong and how it invades a person’s privacy. Let her know how that choice of action will not allow you or anyone else to trust her. I’m asking you to take this route because she’s only 10 years old. There’s more to this behavior than meets the eye – she’s clearly calling out for help. I agree with you, that she may be missing her dad. Either way, this is your teachable moment. Become the support she needs right now. It will build an unbreakable bond the two of you will share for a lifetime. If she dives off the deep end, tell her you’ll have no choice but to mention this to her mother. I’m keeping my fingers crossed all’s well that ends well. Be sure to let me know what happens. I can’t wait to hear. Alma

Car side window may be hurting your skin, eyes Parkland physicians say drivers need to protect exposed skin from UV rays Texas drivers basking in nearly year-round sun may not be aware of a health threat striking them through their car’s side window. Researchers have found that while the windshield of your car adequately shields you from the sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, the same may not be true for side windows. Prolonged exposure to UVA rays can significantly raise the risk for both skin cancer and cataracts. “Overall, only 14 percent of the cars tested by researchers in a recent study offered a high level of side-window UVA protection. This could contribute to a higher prevalence of skin cancer particularly Stephanie Savory, MD on exposed skin surfaces such as the face, arms and hands,” said Stephanie Savory, MD, dermatologist at Parkland Health & Hospital System and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. “Exposure to UV radiation from the sun is linked to up to 90 percent of skin cancers.” In addition to skin cancer risk, sunlight can cause damage to our eyes. There appears to be a link between a process called oxidative stress caused by sunlight and increased incidence of cataracts and other eye problems. Healthcare experts see a higher level of both cataracts and skin cancers on the left sides of people. “Cataracts are often considered an inevitable part of the aging process, but there are steps that can be taken to delay or even avoid them,” said Preston H. Blomquist, MD, Chief of the Ophthalmology Service at Parkland and Professor and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern. “Protecting your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses is highly recommended.” The World Health Organization has designated all ultraviolet radiation as a human carcinogen. Too much exposure to UVA and UVB rays can affect the skin by upsetting delicate processes that affect the skin’s growth and appearance. A recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found that while windshields of cars built between 1990 and 2014 blocked an average 96 percent of the UVA rays, only about 71 percent of the side windows blocked those rays. Only 14 percent of the vehicles studied offered a high-level of UV protection. “Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. More than 3 million Americans are diagnosed each year with some type of the disease and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime,” said Dr. Savory. “But many of these cancers can be prevented by minimizing sun exposure.” Dr. Savory advises people of all skin types who are age six months and older to: Minimize sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hours of peak sun intensity Wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirt, pants and wide-brimmed hat Wear sunglasses with 100 percent UV blocking lenses Use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB blocking sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher Use sunscreen daily. Even on completely overcast days, up to 30 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds and reach your skin Use enough sunscreen to generously coat all skin that will not be covered by clothing, including face, ears, arms and hands Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating Protect your lips with a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher Wear sunscreen while driving, especially on exposed surfaces such as your face, forearms and hands Consider adding tint that protects against UV rays to your car’s side windows “Remember, there is no safe way to tan,” Dr. Savory said. “And sun damage to your skin is cumulative. Every time you tan or burn, you speed up the aging of your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer.”
The Legacy of Trauma
Whites have denied the horror of the violence of White racist violence, African Americans have been unable to deny that same violence, but have had to sublimate and bury memories of what they have seen and endured, in order to function.
By Susan K. Smith George Curry Media Columnist
Can stress be passed on to one's children? More and more, scientific research supports that premise. Known as "epigenetic change," the science says that intense psychological trauma can be and is passed on to future generations. Profound or extreme stress apparently alters the chemical markers in genes. That means that the depression or other psychological effect one might experience because of trauma can be passed on to one's children. If this research is accurate, it means that people today are carrying the results of the stress their ancestors endured. If that stress has been extreme and the psychological and emotional damage has been great, it is probable that we are carrying, to a greater or lesser degree, the pain of our mothers and fathers. The fact that White supremacy and its child, racism, has been so much a part of American life takes on an added dimension when this possibility of genetically transmitted trauma is considered. To be sure, African Americans have not had the benefit of counselors and therapists as we have endured the hate and violence meted out by White supremacists. One can only imagine how our ancestors kept themselves together after seeing loved ones murdered in front of them, bodies burned, dismembered and left to hang in full view of all survivors. The human mind can only take so much. People who come home from war suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the jury is still out as to how many of these suffering soldiers are responsible for crimes on this side of The Pond. War veterans suffer greatly and actually get very little professional help for their post-war suffering. African Americans, it seems, have been in a war for decades; we have had to "fight" violence with little redress or hope for justice. White people either cannot or will not see or believe that the suffering White supremacists have caused African Americans has been damaging to the depths of the very cores of people trying to hold on. While many
One can only wonder how the parents and families of African Americans who have been felled by racist violence - aka domestic terrorism - have been able to hold on and survive in this society. There has been no support, no acknowledgement of the horror meted out, no forcing the perpetrators of murder, rape and psychological trauma to be accountable for their actions. That means that on top of their hurting souls, African Americans have had to also carry anger at being treated as though they (we) have no feelings, no emotions, and no pain. It is singularly maddening to hear people talk about how they want justice; Fred Goldman, the father of Ronald Goldman, for example, has been living in a state of trauma ever since O.J. Simpson was acquitted of his son's murder. The pain of losing his son has been exacerbated by the fact that in his mind, his son's murder has not been avenged; there has been no justice. For Black people, there has very seldom been justice, and the pain of the stress and trauma White supremacy has caused, coupled with that lack of justice, has very likely caused a couple of generations of African Americans to live in that stress and pass it on to their children, even if unknowingly. Many White people resent the phrase, "No justice, no peace!" They consider it a threat. But it is not a threat. It is a statement of truth. No person has peace if he or she has not had justice when wronged. The African American community has been walked over, left out, pushed aside and forgotten for literally hundreds of years. There has been no justice....and so there is no peace. It's the price of genetically transmitted trauma from a society which refuses to own the fact that White supremacy is a destroyer of lives and possibilities of all people- Black and White. Rev. OneUnited Bank Partners with #BlackMoneyMatters L.A. to empower African-Americans to #BankBlack July 23rd from 2pm-5pm over 1,000 people are expected to attend and move their money LOS ANGELES, -- OneUnited Bank, the nation's largest Blackowned bank, first black internet bank, and FDIC insured, announces its partnership with #BlackMoneyMattersLA to empower the Black community in Los Angeles. The message of #BlackMoneyMattersLA is "one of non-violence, non-vitriol, and responsible action, to mobilize as a people and deposit money into Black-owned banks all across the nation, starting with OneUnited Bank". There has been a community awakening following recent tragic events, including a desire by many to do something positive. Many leaders involved in the movement have begun to advocate opening a bank account in a Black-owned bank to show solidarity and empower the community by recycling dollars within the Black community. OneUnited Bank has generated $3 million in deposits from across the country in response to this call to action. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Solange, Killer Mike, Jessie Williams, Alicia Keys and more have joined the conversation urging Black Americans to move their money to Black-owned banks. On Saturday July 23rd, 2016 from 2pm-5pm, OneUnited Bank will partner with #BlackMoneyMattersLA, and other community organizations, to host a first-time account opening event at the OneUnited Bank's Crenshaw branch (3683 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016). With over 1,000 people expected to attend, the event is planned as a positive and exciting opportunity for Los Angeles' urban community to participate in the nationwide push to #BankBlack. The event will feature

Don’t Believe the Hype provides hype you can believe!
Iota Phi Lambda Sorority sisters with journalist Norma Adams- Wade The 22nd Annual Cheryl Smith's Don't Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowla-thon, presented by Parrish’s Restaurants LTD, was held July 9, 2016 at the USA Bowl in Dallas. Comedian Dick Gregory was joined by former Dallas mayor and U.S. Trade Ambassador Ron Kirk as local media personalities and elected officials came together with the community and public for an evening of bowling, fun and fund-raising. Proceeds from the event benefitted area youth and scholarship programs. Mr. Gregory and Ambassador Kirk joined Ms. Smith for the first bowla-thon in 1995 when funds were raised to fund several scholarships and grants to community-based organizations and college students. The Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation was established by veteran journalist Cheryl Smith as a 501(C)3 non profit organization to fund and operate programs and promote activities for youth, with a special emphasis on scholarships, life skills education and college preparation. The many programs that benefit from the foundation are geared toward vast communities and scholarships are awarded indiscriminately although the foundation takes a special interest in youth from historically underserved areas. Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-athon is the major fundraiser for the foundation. Over the years this charitable event has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars which have been used to fund scholarships, provide internships and sponsor journalism workshops. The celebrity bowl-a-thon is a fun event that engages the entire family. There are also community forums that the foundation hosts. Health, Fitness, education, media access, and teen issues are a few of the forums sponsored by the Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation. Thousands have attended these forums where noted speakers included: Mamie Till Mobley (the mother of Emmett Till), noted author/historian Ivan Van Sertima, journalist Thor Christenson, comedian/ activist Dick Gregory and Editor George E. Curry. Over $60,000 in scholarships has been awarded to aspiring journalists, through the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists and over $20,000 has been awarded to student interns from the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program, under the leadership of Texas State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas).. For more than a decade, the foundation has been one of the major sponsors of the D/FW-ABJ Urban Journalism Workshop, a 12week boot camp for aspiring journalists. Since its inception a student from the Conrad program is also a scholarship recipient. This year, for the second time members of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority served as key volunteers.
