Grand Connection
Mother-Son duo bridges southern comfort and community Story and Photos By Eva D. Coleman
While Texas brought the heat, Joshua Horton brought the tunes. This mixmaster mashed up more than music during the Fourth of July weekend as he performed double duty as deejay/greeter and manager. Potatoes, chicken fried steak and many other southern favorites were all around as well. His employees were hands-on in the experience that he and his mother hope to provide Garland residents at the Grandy’s location on North Garland Avenue. “Grandy’s has been here about 40 years in this location, Horton said, adding, “This is a new era, a new day. The location is under new management by Horton and his mother, Lowniece (Lolisa) Horton. Their re-grand opening celebration filled with music, food and fun focused on togetherness. “My son is a new owner and he wanted the community involved and to do special events for the kids and that’s what today is all about, Lolisa said.
Kazee celebrates 100th birthday
Mother Horton is no stranger to Grandy’s. As a franchisee for two different locations for close to 10 years, her experiences, at times, have left her feeling battered and fried. A die-hard entrepreneur, she has kept pressing forward, overcoming obstacles and facing challenges. Lolisa sold the location she co-owned in Carrollton and at the same time, hopefully has revamped it works for him and he can a partnership, keep it, she said. this time with Joshua sees it as a way to her son, at the give back. Garland one. “I’ve watched her do so “I lost quite Lolisa Horton and Joshua much, especially for me a bit of money Horton at their Grandy’s in personally and for our famand he [Joshua] Garland. ily and it’s my opportunity said he wants to to say, ‘okay, it’s my turn to make sure I get my investment back do something for you now,’ he exthat I lost in the other business, and plained.
Mavericks benefit from Durant’s decision By Dorothy Gentry Contributing Editor/Sports Writer
On July 1, 2016, the Kazee family and friends celebrated the 100th birthday of the family matriarch, Mrs. Lovie Kazee, with a musical production filled with lots of laughs and highlights about the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on families.
A little after 8 p.m. on July 4th, Harrison Barnes, the soon-to-be former starting small forward for the Golden State Warriors sent out a tweet that read in part; “I just want to thank the entire Warriors organization, my teammates and coaches for the amazing four years I’ve had there‌I’m excited to begin a new chapter in my NBA career in Dallas.â€? And with that tweet to his almost 500,000 followers, Barnes reinvigorated the Dallas Maverick’s free agency efforts and created a slight buzz in what was shaping up to be another disappointing summer.
Mother and son both shared that the past two weeks as partners have been challenging. “Overall, he’s a hard worker, Lolisa said. “He’s dedicated but he means well. Joshua, with an ever present smile on his face, seems ready to face any and all challenges. “It’s not been easy, but each day we make it work and each day it gets better, he
said. As they get used to working as a team on the inside, their focus seems to remain on what’s outside. “This Grandy’s has had so many different owners in the past...they say it’s a Grandy’s that has really not worked and they threatened to close it, so hopefully we can keep it open and it works out to bring the community together, Lolisa said.
NYT failed to capture problems facing Black Press By George E. Curry Editor-in-Chief EmergeNewsOnline.com

WASHINGTON - Sunday’s front-page story on the Black Press failed to accurately portray the accomplishments of and the depth of the problems facing Black-owned media, according to scholars, Black media owners and editors. The Times story was published under the headline, “Pillars of Black Media, Once Vibrant, Now Fighting for Survival. Linn Washington, Jr., a professor of journalism at Temple University, said one of the most glaring shortcomings of the article was that of approximately 200 Black-owned news-
A short time under the new management model has proven to be a success. Joshua proudly informed his mother that their location earned top honors in sales for Texas for the past two weeks. Great customer service means a lot and the menu speaks for itself. “If you love your mom’s mac and cheese, we got it, said Joshua. “If you love that southern steak and potatoes on a late night and you get hungry about 8:30 or 9, we got it. From cinnamon rolls, peach cobbler, brownie bites and even breakfast burritos, he continued to name with pride all that Grandy’s offers. “It’s food for everybody, really, but it always goes back to southern comfort. May the comfort of this mother-son relationship reign supreme as they strive to satisfy every customer at:
Grandy’s 145 North Garland Avenue Garland, TX papers in the United States, no Black editor or publisher was quoted. Nor were any of the leaders of their trade organization, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). “The failure to note legacies of the historic Black Press in an article purportedly about pillars of Black Media is yet another omission by commission cited as a major failing of mainstream media as far back as the 1968 Kerner Report on race relations in America, Washington said. “Such omissions perpetuate the misunderstandings underlying the persistence of the ‘race problem’ in America. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed an 11-member National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, Jr., in July 1967 to examine the racial rebellions that erupted in major cities for several years and to make recommendations for improvement.

“We still continue to see discriminatory voting laws and restrictions throughout the country. New voting restrictions have been put in place in 22 states, including Texas, making it harder for millions of Americans to exercise their right to vote. It doesn’t seem to be a coincidence that new restrictions are disproportionately in states with recently high African American voter turnout and increased Hispanic population growth.”
“Today marks an end to the systematic dismantling of women’s right to access comprehensive health care that has been upheld in Texas courts and throughout other states.
“The Shelby decision reversed 50 years of progress we’ve made in increasing access to the ballot box for all Americans,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “It is clear that three years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act is three years too long.
“HB 2 left tens of thousands of women in Texas with few to no options to receive critical health care screenings, check-ups, or legal abortions.
“The Voting Rights Act is the most successful piece of civil rights legislation in history. We in Congress have an obligation and the responsibility to address this threat on voting rights with federal legislation that will restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act.” In Shelby County v. Holder Chief Justice Roberts acknowledged the ongoing persistence of voter discrimination and invited Congress to come up with a new coverage formula based on current conditions.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt: “Today is a great day for women’s rights everywhere,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling shows that the Texas HB 2 law limited women’s access to proper care and their constitutional rights. This ruling ensures that the existing abortion clinics will remain open and will enable more clinics to open their doors to serve the needs of Texas women. ”

“Three years ago, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. This ruling weakened voter rights protections for millions of Americans,” said Congresswoman Johnson.
Two bipartisan bills in Congress would do so, but Republican leaders in the House and Senate have refused to allow a vote on either.
“Women in rural Texas were left with no viable clinics within hundreds of miles. The Supreme Court’s ruling will likely allow many of the clinics shuttered under the law to re-open and possibly save the lives of women who were left without any options.” In deciding the Whole Woman’s Health case, the Supreme Court determined Texas’s HB 2 law amounted to an undue burden on a woman’s constitutional right to obtain a legal abortion. The Court’s decision will affect similar laws in 12 other states, some now on hold because of court challenges.

Rep. Johnson hosts innovation roundtable meeting On June 27, 2016, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) held a listening session roundtable on innovation in her Congressional office in Dallas. The purpose of the roundtable was to assess the challenges facing the U.S. in sustaining its leadership in innovation, and to identify the bold new steps and initiatives that are needed to ensure that America remains first in the world in innovation. The roundtable included experts from industry, academia, and early investors in the Dallas area. Represented at the roundtable were Texas Instruments, the Microsoft Technology Center in Dallas, Tech Wildcatters, Mary Kay, the School for the Talented and Gifted, AT&T, Toyota North America, UT Southwestern, and ExxonMobil. In her prepared remarks Congresswoman Johnson said, “As a proud resident of Dallas, with so many groundbreaking, innovative, important industries and educational institutions, and as Ranking Member of the House Science Committee, I believe that the investments in our science, innovation, and education enterprise are so important because they are essential for the U.S.’s long-term economic growth and competitiveness.
“If the U.S. falls behind in technology and innovation, our nation’s economic competitiveness will suffer. The American people will see fewer opportunities and a lower standard of living. “That’s why I’m proud to have worked on legislation such as bills to help bring more diversity to the STEM fields, a bill to ensure that we remain a leader in engineering biology, and of course, the America COMPETES Act. “At the core of the original America COMPETES Act, which passed with strong bipartisan support, was a strategy of increasing our national competitiveness through sustained investment in research and development and in STEM education. It focused on making prudent investments today so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy a higher standard of living than the one we have enjoyed thanks to the investments of preceding generations. “I want to hear from you what bold new steps and initiatives we in Congress can be pursuing to help continue that legacy.”

EDITORIAL/OPINION
After Orlando, drive out hate with light and love By Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition via George Curry Media
Orlando now will be added to the haunting list: Newtown, Conn., Virginia Tech, San Bernardino, Calif., Charleston, S.C., Aurora, Colo. and more. USA Today provides a graphic of 310 mass killings since 2006 (with four or more dead), the dots tracking across the nation. Mass killings still shock us. Somehow we’ve grown accustomed to the daily terror - in Chicago, nearly five times as many people have been shot and killed since the beginning of the year than the 49 that died in Orlan-
do. Orlando was, as President Obama said, “an act of terror and an act of hate. The grisly toll was also a product of the easy access to guns, particularly guns made for the military at war. The killer called 911 in the midst of his rampage to announce his allegiance to the Islamic State, but this came as a surprise to his friends and former wife. His father said that his son was outraged by the sight of gay men kissing on the street, that he didn’t think that religion “had anything to do with it. An act of terror and an act of hate. The human reaction is to want to strike back. Escalate attacks on the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Redouble surveillance and crack down on Muslims at home. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president,
went, characteristically, to the most extreme, calling on the president to resign and Hillary Clinton to withdraw because they didn’t use the words “radical Islam, as if that were a magical chant that would set everything right. He raised alarms about “thousands of radical Muslims in the United States, and reiterated his call for banning any Muslim immigration. Hillary Clinton was more tempered, while arguing that we had the capacity to eliminate lone wolf terrorists at home and the Islamic State abroad. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us a different lesson. Faced with the violence and terror unleashed against African-Americans in this country, he called on us to reach out, to love and not to hate. “Darkness, he wrote, “cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. This wisdom should not be forgotten now. We would do better to reach out to Muslims in this nation and respect their religion and their rights, rather than to hunt them, to isolate them or to denigrate them. Muslim organizations across the country have issued statements condemning this act of terror. We should embrace them as part of the American community, engage them in the effort to identify the violent extremists, not treat all Muslims like a threatening stranger. We would do better to reassess our strategy in the Middle East rather than
double down on violence. We have displaced the Taliban in Afghanistan and killed Bin Laden; we’ve overthrown Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya; we’ve decimated al-Qaida; our allies have carpet bombed Yemen; our drones bomb in seven countries. Yet the terror spreads, the violence spreads, the chaos spreads. More violence generates more terrorists. Redoubling our efforts can wipe out the Islamic State, but it will surely add to the terrorist ranks at the same time. Most mass shootings are not political; the victims most often are relatives or friends. Most casualties do not come from “radical Islamic terrorists. More Americans have been killed by homegrown terrorists motivated by racial or anti-government or anti-gay hatreds than have been killed by those motivated by Islamic extremism. Gun control cannot end terror, neither the mass shootings like Orlando nor the daily horror as in Chicago. Omar Mateen, the killer in Orlando, was a security guard, apparently with a record clean enough that he was able to buy guns legally. But surely it is inconceivable that military assault weapons like the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that he used (and that was also used in Aurora and Newtown and San Bernardino) should be so easily purchased. Reviving the ban on assault weapons that lapsed under President Bush is not a full remedy, but it is simple common sense. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. is founder and president of the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition. You can keep up with his work at www. rainbowpush.org
Do you really want to work or do you just want a job? One African American Woman’s Opinion by Cheryl Smith
I was contacted by a friend who is looking to hire a PR pro. The friend does not want to hire me, instead I am to refer someone. Now I take this request and all others, very seriously. After all, my reputation is on the line. SO here goes and if you are a serious candidate, someone who wants to pick a bone, or show some love, I am anxious to hear from you. If, however you take offense because you have the “let the hit dog holler syndrome then I suggest you do as comedian David A. Arnold says, “GYST! So here goes. The job is for a PR/Public Information professional, pays between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, with full benefits and is in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Already you may have determined this is not the job for you. Now for the PR/public information pro, yes a degree is expected and yes, you should have experience.

Does that mean you went to college, got a degree and immediately opened your own PR firm? umm who are your clients and how long have you been perfecting your craft? Does this mean you worked in radio/television/newspaper for years and you have plenty of contacts? well, you need more than that. Does this mean that you opened your own firm and you spend more time promoting yourself than your clients? Not at all! Good PR folks have their clients in the news more than they have themselves.
Now, before we look at the requirements for the job, let’s explore expectations for ANY job. How’s your work ethic? Are you a skilled communicator who works well with others? Are you enterprising? Do you watch the clock? Are you a constant complainer or do you grumble every time you are given an assignment? Does someone have to kiss your butt to get you to do your job? Do you realize that in your business you should look a certain way every day (forget about casual days - tragedies occur every day)?

Do you use illness, traffic, death (except yours) as an excuse/explanation for not completing assignments? (Face it, bosses are human and they share your grief, but where’s the assignment I gave you?) Do you perform the same when your supervisor/boss is in the room or building or do you act like a child who plays when your parent is not looking? Do you talk too much? Do you buckle under pressure? Do you close circles - meaning do you see each project/assignment/task through to completion? Are you star-struck? Are you trying to become a star? Do you know how to dress for success? Do you accept the job, with salary, hours, etc, knowing you will not be punching a clock and then begin complaining later? Do you take a job, looking for another one? Do you borrow money or items and not pay back or return? Are you prepared? Do your feelings get hurt easily? Do you poop out at parties? (Just kidding, was going to offer you some Vitametavegamin! Do you understand the media community in your market and across the country? Internationally? Can you write (REALLY write)? Can you address social threats? Do you know when and when not to call a news conference? Are you versed on media legal issues? Do you know how to build relationships with media organizations and the people you are working for? Are you camera-shy? Can you take control of a situation (or the microphone) assertively versus aggressively? Do you realize the importance/significance of ALL media outlets and treat them fairly? Do you know how to establish protocol? Side note: Do you watch ABC’s #Scandal? I’d better stop now. I’ve recommended quite a few people over the years and they’ve been hired. DONALD J. TRUMP - A CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER Quit Playin’ by Vincent Hall
Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.
I went to the Dallas Donald Trump rally and revenge tour as a reporter, so what I will say going forward is part report and part opinion. Trump drew a strange consortium of Whites; from the poverty riddled trailer parks to the property rich haven of Highland Park. I have lived in Dallas all my life; I know both crowds well. There was indeed a smattering of confused Black, Brown and Asian brothers and sisters who find inclusion in Trumps message. Can't explain that, but what about the “Age of Trump” can anyone exegete with precision? The Age of Trump is an imbroglio of epic distortions. But Dallas Democrats better beware. Trumpism is not a joke. Democrats are situated in a feud between Hillary and Bernie.
Meanwhile Trump and the Republicans have a straight shot at taking the presidency and Dallas County. If you give up the tea leaves and read the voting statistics you realize quickly that Republicans were sickened by George Dubya. The Blues didn’t win Dallas, the Reds just forfeited. Remember that Dallas is only one of 254 counties in the state of Texas and the only one solidly blue. But don't get it twisted. Democrats in Dallas County didn't prevail because we had the numbers; we have won since 2006 because the GOP stopped voting. I know you are enjoying having all these Democrats in black robes. I know that you are touting the fact that Dallas has more African-American females on the bench than does any other county in the state and possibly the nation. But I also remember a song by B.B. King; “The same thing that will make you laugh will make you cry. Anywho….I didn't see you at the
rally, I'm sure you were too invested in LeBron James and the Golden State Wannabees. (Sorry GS fans)… But let me say this as honestly as I know how. You can sit in the comfort of your home and act as if all is well, but if you don't show up en masse in November your world is going to change. No one will have to beg and cajole you to come to a protest rally or a freedom fight; it will be your regular weekly ritual. The Donald Trump phenomenon is indicative of a Civil War brewing in America. It is a cold war at this point but the passions I saw yesterday let me know that
some people will be killed as a result of Trump's vaulted vernacular and divisive vitriol. And I don't say that without great caution. I admit that violence is on the horizon with disgust and a
sense of loss. The (New) Republican Party has allowed Nationalism and racial arrogance to trump love and compassion. Ronald Reagan's "Bootstrap" generation has finally come of age. And they aren't listening to any excuses other than their own. Don’t look now, but Whites make up almost 70% of the “eligible” voting population and Trump is harvesting a whole new field of potential voters. When Robert Jeffress, the Pastor of the most resourceful “Christian’ congregation in Dallas is the opening act for “Trump’s Vicious Vaudeville” act, everything civil and spiritual goes out of the window. The message is clear, a large swath of Whites in America don't give a damn about anyone who does not look or think like them, and Dallas is no exception. This election is a matter of hate versus love and it's time for America to decide. But don't forget...in the words of Langston Hughes; YOU are America too!!!
Dealing with disrespect from Democrats and Republicans SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by George E. Curry (George Curry Media Columnist)
After last week’s column on how the major presidential candidates snubbed organizers of this year’s National Black Political Convention in Gary, Ind., I received quite a few emails asking: What can we do about it? For anyone who may have missed the column, I noted that in an ultimate show of disrespect, each major presidential candidate declined to appear before the National Black Political Convention in Gary, despite it being co-sponsored by the National Policy Alliance, a federation that includes 10 major Black organizations: Blacks in Government (BIG), the Congressional Black Caucus, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association, the National Association of Black County Officials, the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, the National Black Council of School Board Members, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the National Organization of Black County Officials and
the World Conference of Mayors. BIG represents 3 million Black government employees and the CBC says its members represent approximately 43 million people. I pointed out that most Republicans wouldn’t dare insult conservatives by failing to appear before the annual Conservative Political Action Conference and that neither Democrats nor Republicans would decline to show up for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Yet, they don’t think twice before skipping a major gathering of African Americans. And we continue to take it. First, let’s stipulate that standing on the sidelines is not the answer, regardless of how disappointed we may be at the behavior of Democrats and Republicans. Not voting is a vote - a vote against anything approaching a progressive agenda. With the direction of the U.S. Supreme Court hanging in the balance, that alone should motivate us to turn out this fall in record numbers. Second, it’s irresponsible to suggest that there is no difference between the behavior and voting records of Dem-
ocrats and Republicans. I certainly can identify with the frustration of dealing with liberal condescension, but that shouldn’t blind us to the outright hostility of Republican leaders. Picking the lesser of two evils still leaves us with evil, but not nearly as much evil were Republican polices adopted. Exhibit A is the GOP record in Congress. When the NAACP graded members of Congress on issues important to African Americans, every Republican in the House and Senate received an “F.” Not a D-minus. Not even a D-plus. Voting for them would be voting against our own self-interests. It hasn’t always been this way. Blacks voted Republican from the Reconstruction Era immediately after the Civil War until 1936 when Franklin D. Roosevelt received 71 percent of the African American vote in the most lopsided electoral victory in history. After Harry S Truman desegregated the military and the federal workforce, he received 77 percent of the Black vote in 1948. Even as late as 1960, Richard Nixon got 32 percent of the Black vote against John F. Kennedy. But the Republican Party grew increasingly anti-Black and no Republican president has received more than 15 percent of the Black vote since Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights www.garlandjournal.com
Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In 2012, Mitt Romney received 6 per cent of the African American vote, according to Roper, and Donald J. Trump appears on track to receive less than that. More than a half-century after passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Blacks are still underrepresented in public office. As a Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies report found, “Based on the most recent data, African Americans are 12.5% of the citizen voting age population, but they make up a smaller share of the U.S. House (10%), state legislatures (8.5%), city councils (5.7%), and the U.S. Senate (2%).” And some of that failure rests squarely on our shoulders. As the report noted, “ ...In 2014, when there was great unrest over a police officer’s killing of Michael Brown, African Americans made up 67% of residents of Ferguson, Missouri. In 2012, a solid 100% of Ferguson precincts went for President Obama, but during Ferguson’s municipal off-cycle elections voters selected Ferguson’s Republican mayor and six city council members, all of whom except one were white.” But the problem is larger than that. Essentially, we provide the margin of victory for Democrats year after year and
often get little or nothing in return. So back to the original question: What can we do about it? Since my days as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the 1970s, I have advocated a simple and yet powerful step: Pick one local office, say comptroller or city treasurer, and vote Republican and Democrat in alternate elections. Because Blacks vote overwhelmingly in favor of Democrats, I would vote first for the Republican candidate. It wouldn’t be long before both Democrats and Republicans fall over themselves courting Black voters. And if that fails to capture their attention, then move to a second city office or a statewide contest. If this happens at the local level, national party leaders would take note and do everything without their power to avoid a shift of loyalty at the national level. Until we show that we will make politicians pay on Election Day, we will continue to get disrespected by both major parties.

Truth is...Living a healthy life amazing life. Of course, we can not stop all bad things from occurring in our lives, but we can definitely not contribute to them. What is a healthy lifestyle anyway? A healthy lifestyle is a life which aims to keep and improve one’s health and wellbeing. In efforts to do so, one must seek knowledge wisdom in all aspects of their lives.
By Dr. Keisha Lankford Truth is ..... A healthy lifestyle is an
Health is not limited to physical well being. Spiritual, physical, psychological and emotional health is also very important. In fact, we often place emphasis on the physical, because it is visible, but if we don’t effectively and adequately appropriate time and healing for the whole body, the physical health will be the least of our worries!
When embracing a healthy overall lifestyle, we must undergo a serious self analysis and discover what’s been beneficial to us, what our strengths are, and what our weaknesses are! What disadvantages and advantages do we have? What do we enjoy doing and what it is that we’re good at doing? Asking ourselves, “am I doing what I was created to do?” If not, “Why aren’t I?” What or who is holding me back from being my personal best? Is it my associations, my surroundings, or myself? Usually fear of failure or rejection is our greatest setback, but we must remember, if we are not honest and true to ourselves, why should anyone else be true to us? Free yourself. Try it, do it. Many may not understand but all that is
required is that you understand. Believe, hope, nurture your dreams and goals! Aren’t you glad some of the greatest of all times didn’t allow fear to keep them from their dreams? Just imagine what the 60s would be without Berry Gordy’s Dream, “Motown!” Motown produced music that made people feel good despite their difficulty in a very oppressed time. It instilled pride, promoted respect and often helped heal very deep wounds. What dream are you sitting on that could possibly make a contribution to our society/world? Be true to God; your creator and yourself! Honestly, that is where the journey truly begins! Now that’s healthy living! Enjoy the journey, you deserve it!

DCCCD students overcome pain, poverty, disease; awarded Erin Tierney Kramp Scholarships
Poverty, domestic violence, child abuse, breast cancer: these obstacles and more have not stopped three Dallas County Community College District students from building new lives for themselves and others. As a result of their bravery and perseverance, Susana Carrillo, Stephanie Johnson and Carolyn Iduh have been chosen recently to receive the Erin Tierney Kramp Encouragement Endowed Scholarship. Carrillo, Johnson and Iduh all have overcome childhood hardships or domestic abuse. Johnson is a breast cancer survivor; Iduh left her native Nigeria to come to America, where she struggled when the funds promised to support her fell through; and Carrillo endured a physically abusive husband. All three students will be recognized as 2016-2017 recipients of the Dallas County Community College District's Kramp Scholarship during a special awards dinner on Wed., June 22, at a dining establishment in Dallas. The scholarship, which is administered by the DCCCD Foundation, will help Carrillo, Johnson and Iduh reach for their dreams with financial support from the Erin Tierney Kramp Encouragement Foundation scholarship award, which covers full tuition and books for up to six semesters. The courage and perseverance shown by all three students in the face of adversity are traits exhibited by the person for whom the Foundation and scholarship are named. Erin Tierney Kramp, who fought breast cancer from 1994 to 1998, created a videotaped legacy on “life lessons” for her daughter, Peyton, prior to her death. The videotapes became tools that conveyed Erin's views and advice to Peyton as the young girl grew up, following her mother's death.
Erin touched many lives and inspired countless strangers when she co-authored Living with the End in Mind (written with her husband and a family friend) and through appearances on programs like 20/20 and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Winfrey featured the Kramp story/segment as one of her “most memorable guests” during a May 2011 farewell show as the program reached its historic end. Erin's legacy lives on through the Erin Tierney Kramp Encouragement Foundation, its scholarship program and the lives of all of its recipients. “The Erin Tierney Kramp program awards scholarships to students based on their courage and perseverance in the face of adversity,” said Michael Brown, president of the Erin Tierney Kramp Foundation. “We see these qualities in all three students this year – Susana, Stephanie and Carolyn– and know that they are survivors. Their stories exemplify what our past recipients have demonstrated repeatedly through Erin's legacy. When individuals face adversity, the struggles they endure will either make them stronger or defeat them. Winning that battle requires both courage and perseverance – traits possessed by all of our former recipients and certainly these three new recipients as well.” Susana Carrillo: Beating Abuse, Becoming a Role Model Surviving her first marriage with broken bones and broken promises – and without support from her own family, Carrillo endured abuse, uncertainty and even the denial of a protective order until she documented her injuries. Finally able to file for divorce, Susana tried to start a new life. Unfortunately, Susana became engaged to a supportive man who eventually became jealous and abusive, too. Despondent inside, she hid her problems at work, sleeping little and eating even less. She was devastated to find that what appeared to be a new, positive relationship had crumbled into dust.

Carrillo began to see a psychiatrist and a psychologist so that she could share her problems with family members, grieve and change her own thinking process. That’s when she decided it was time to go to college and enrolled at Brookhaven. The mother of four children (including one set of twins) and proud grandmother wants her family to remember her for overcoming the adversity she faced instead of those early years of abuse and despair. Susana currently has earned a 3.92 grade point average; is co-vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa, an academic honorary for two-year colleges; and is majoring in computer information technology, specifically web production and design. Carrillo said, “I want to be able to help young girls avoid abusive relationships and to raise awareness about domestic violence, starting with my twins.” Stephanie Johnson: Overcoming Poverty, Abuse and Breast Cancer Faced with extreme poverty and childhood abuse, El Centro College student Stephanie Johnson grew up without a father (who was serving a 10-year prison sentence) and finally ended up in foster care. She lived in a facility with other disadvantaged and troubled youth, fighting to graduate from school on time and to overcome the psychological scars from her childhood. After marriage and motherhood at an early age, Johnson escaped a violent relationship and learned to love herself for who she is, only to face a battle with breast cancer in 2011 at age 38. Johnson’s battle with cancer lasted a year, including four months of chemotherapy and three operations. A self-employed artist with no health insurance, she was faced with finding health care providers and facilities that would treat her – and she prevailed. Starting yet again, Stephanie decided to go to college and pursue her dream of becoming an artist. Using a portion of her tax return, Johnson paid for her first class. She remains involved in neighborhood activities where she lives, and helps others in need. Her dream is to transfer to Southern Methodist University to earn a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Johnson said, “I have worked over this lifetime to grow into the woman I am today. I truly believe that it would be a great diswww.garlandjournal.com

honor to the life I have been granted to not do what is in my soul: to earn my bachelor’s degree and become the artist I want to be.” Carolyn Iduh: Conquering Adversity, Becoming a Doctor Nigerian native and El Centro student Carolyn Iduh had dreamed about becoming a doctor since she was a young child. She excelled in school but also experienced firsthand the challenges of coming from a home where her once-loving dad abandoned the family and constantly beat her mother. Carolyn grew up quickly, working part time to help her mother, whose own job kept her away at night. She made sure her siblings stayed in school and eventually began to work full time, again to help her mom. Sometimes Carolyn cried herself to sleep at night, sad about her situation and yet determined to go to school and become a doctor. She became a tutor, learned and used some nursing skills, and began helping people online who were sick, young or from broken homes. Iduh taught in her church; she also served as a motivational speaker and counselor in communities, schools and online. In spite of the challenges she has faced, she continues helping many young people fulfill their dreams. Iduh’s dream to enroll in college in the United States and to become a neurosurgeon became reality a year ago when one of her pastors in Nigeria sponsored her to come to the U.S. to study. Joyfully, she left her country and came to America, without a home or friends. Then the funds to support her fell through. Since then, she has been working on campus and struggles to pay for her education. She said,” I refuse to give up. I wake up each day not knowing how I am going to survive, but I smile, knowing that God loves me and that he brought me here. Reaching out to others daily gives me strength and joy to overcome and stand up to any adversity.” Iduh has earned a 3.7 cumulative GPA. She also wants to establish a scholarship foundation to help young people; to help women and children fight HIV/AIDS; and to celebrate young people and their impact by starting a television show. NTTA Diversity Program surpasses 30%
Anthony Coleman, NTTA Director of Business of Diversity
The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) released its diversity participation numbers and for the second year in a row contract spending with disadvantaged-, minority-, or women-owned business enterprises has surpassed 30 percent. The NTTA implemented several outreach and diversity participation strategies beginning in 2009, including the Relationships and Opportunities Advancing Diversity (ROAD) program. "Through the ROAD program NTTA has paired 31 minority- or women-owned businesses with larger prime contrac-

tors in the mentorship program," explained Anthony Coleman, NTTA Director of Business Diversity. "The NTTA diversity participation numbers are up 24 percent since the ROAD program started." In 2008 NTTA spent $432 million on road projects, awarding $63 million to D/M/WBEs. Of that amount $10 million went to D/M/WBE prime contractors. In 2015 NTTA spent a total of $164 million dollars
on contracts, awarding $50 million to D/M/WBEs. Of that amount $31 million went to D/M/WBE prime contractors. NTTA developed the ROAD partnering program to enhance the opportunities for disadvantaged-, minority-, and women-owned businesses to work on agency projects. The core of the ROAD program is to create an atmosphere where business relationships can flourish. It allows smaller companies to participate in larger projects that they may not currently have the capacity to handle. It also gives them much needed experience and exposure to skill sets they sought to develop in the past and provides opportunities for training in new growth areas. A P Engineering Consultant, Inc. (APEC) credits the ROAD program with enabling it to build capacity, increase revenues, and create sustainability through continuous work on the NTTA General Engineering Consultant (GEC) solicitation. "Without the ROAD program, my firm would not have stood much of a chance to be able to participate in large projects," said Anuj M. Patel, President of APEC. From 2011 through 2013, ROAD paired APEC with mentor Atkins, a worldwide design, engineering, and project management consultancy. Atkins and APEC teamed up, responded to NTTA's GEC solicitation, and won the contract. As prime consultant, Atkins supports bond-related services for NTTA, and APEC has conducted peer reviews and participated in annual inspections. "ROAD fits hand-in-glove with Atkins' culture of developing strong relationships with small businesses to form successful partnerships that meet the needs of clients," explained R. Keith Jackson, P.E., Vice President, Atkins. "We have found the program so beneficial that we promote the concept to other clients." HNTB Corporation and EJES began their ROAD partnership six years ago. Through that relationship their team is working on the NTTA Program Management Consultant contract. EJES is providing project management support to HNTB on the project. EJES performs database administration, contract administration, construction management oversight, and PS&E design review. In order for the NTTA ROAD program to work, there has to be an environment where both companies feel safe and secure in sharing information and challenges. "EJES was able to express company challenges faced in the architect/engineering industry and to receive sound advice from HNTB's wealth of knowledge," said Edwin Jones, CEO/President of EJES, Incorporated. "EJES has gained a vast amount

of knowledge that has assisted in the growth and development of the company, both operationally and in business development." HNTB and EJES have partnered on several pursuits and were recently selected for the TxDOT GEC team. "HNTB has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the NTTA R.O.A.D program and has learned from and built strong relationships with each of our partners" says Michael Hegarty, HNTB Vice President and North Texas Office Leader. "The ROAD program has increased the number of ready, willing, and able companies to compete for projects in addition to creating a potentially larger subcontracting pool of construction services and professional services candidates," explained Anthony Coleman. While not all ROAD teams resulted in NTTA work, the teams still consider the relationship productive. Jacobs Engineering Group and AGUIRRE RODEN were paired up through the ROAD program in 2014. They have not been able to bid on a NTTA project together, but they have used the ROAD concepts to strengthen their working relationship on a five-year DFW Airport project. Peter Aguirre, CFM Senior Vice President of AGUIRRE RODEN, says his company has developed a robust program from being mentored by Jacobs. "The ROAD program has been a holistic approach in which every part of our company benefited. This resulted in process improvement from sales to accounting to production for our team," said Peter Aguirre. The Jacob-AGUIRRE RODEN relationship is an example of how the ROAD mentor/protégé program is not just a one-way street with the protégé receiving all the benefits. AGUIRRE RODEN led the training on successful hiring practices and Jacobs has incorporated some of those procedures into their practice. "Discussion with AGUIRRE RODEN has helped us with the on-boarding experience of our employees," said Spenta F. Irani, P.E., Transportation Manager for Jacobs. "This program has provided us with good practices from smaller firms and shown us how we can utilize those to enhance our business." Under the ROAD program, mentors and protégés meet on a regular basis to build their strategic partnership. ROAD also has a networking component that allows all the prime contractors and sub-contractors in the program to become better acquainted through quality time at various events. After six years the NTTA ROAD program is seeing a second generation of mentors ... subcontractors that started out in the program as mentees, have now become primes and mentors to other subcontractors in the ROAD program. EJES has moved from mentee to mentor to smaller businesses. In 2014 it became a mentor to Design Consulting Engineers (DCE) through the ROAD program. "EJES assisted us in developing marketing strategies and business development relationships with the City of Dallas and DFW Airport projects, said DCE President Mannan Abdul, P.E. "We provide added value to the mentoring program because of our understanding of the challenges small businesses face that larger firms are unable to address," said Edwin Jones, CEO/President of EJES. "Since 2009, the volunteer-based Relationships and Opportunities Advancing Diversity (ROAD) program has helped build relationships between prime contractors and consultants who otherwise wouldn't have the platform to connect," concluded Coleman.

BLACKONOMICS by James Clingman
via George Curry Media Jim Clingman, founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce, is the nation’s most prolific writer on economic empowerment for Black people. He can be reached through his website, blackonomics.com.
More than a couple of million folks have responded to the words spoken by Jesse Williams, which points out the fact that many Black people are mesmerized by words that excite us and stimulate our emotions. Rather than initiating practical and appropriate actions as a result of words that make us feel good, we usually end up celebrating, espousing, regurgitating, and discussing, ad nauseam, those words instead of implementing strategies that make us “do good.” The speech by Williams was important and relevant, especially to Black people. I appreciate his words and his willingness to make his statements on such a widely-viewed stage. He used his fame and the very popular BET Awards Show to put forth a message that has been spoken and written by others before him, but also one that we need to hear over and over. Seems to me that when someone famous says the same things other non-famous folks have said, it takes hold quicker and our light bulbs come on faster. Questions: “How long will the message last? Will we act upon it? Jesse Williams’ background, political affiliations and motivations notwithstanding, his message was more important than the messenger. But since we are so attuned with what our celebrities say, he had instant cred-
One shining Jesse Williams moment ibility with many young and older folks alike. This is not to suggest that we discriminate against a message because of its messenger. A moron can bring
a valid message. Suppose Clarence Thomas had said the same thing Williams said. Would we reject that message? My point is that Black folks should be able to discern a positive message that comes from any messenger, so that we can know “why” the message is being promulgated and be able to respond appropriately to that message. Emotional catch-words and phrases are fleeting and seldom cause any improvement in our well-being. Remember: “I have a dream!” “Down with dope - Up with hope!” “No justice, no peace!” “Yes we can!”
CURRY: Black Press continued from front The commission’s report found, “The journalistic profession has been shockingly backward in seeking out, hiring, training, and promoting Negroes. Fewer than 5 percent of the people employed by the news business in editorial jobs in the United States today are Negroes. Fewer than 1 percent of editors and supervisors are Negroes, and most of them work for Negro-owned organizations. The lines of various news organizations to the militant blacks are, by admission of the newsmen themselves, almost nonexistent.” The Black Media, on the other hand, is more trusted by African Americans. “Black newspapers service large numbers of the Black community each week with viable and late breaking news,” said John “Jake” Oliver, publisher of the Baltimore-based Afro Newspapers and a former president of NNPA. “Such service is provided across this country in the latest mediums (electronic etc.) our rapidly changing community can absorb.” According to Jet magazine [Nov. 2, 1998], a study conducted by Ketchum Public Relations’ African-American Markets Group (AAMG) and Florida A&M University’s School of Business and Industry found that 87 percent of Blacks place their highest trust in Black magazines, closely followed by Black television news and Black newspapers at 80 percent; Black radio news was trusted by 70 percent of African Americans. By contrast, Consumer Reports was the only non-Black media resource with a trust level of 81 percent. A 2012 study by Nielsen found, “The average income for African-American households nationwide is $47,290 with 35% earning $50,000 or more.” Ten percent of Black
households earn $100,000 or more each year. The study noted, “The Black population and its aggregate buying power is overall more geographically widespread and more diverse than other ethnic and racial segments.” The study observed, “Since 2000, the total U.S. population only increased by 11.3%, while the Black population increased by 17.9%, a rate that is 1.6 times the greater overall growth.” The report noted that the U.S. Black population is larger than 163 of the 195 countries in the world, including Argentina, Poland, Canada and Australia. A 2013 Nielsen study (“Resilient, Receptive and Relevant: The African-American Consumer 2013 Report”) found that although annual Black spending was projected to rise from $1 trillion to $1.3 trillion by 2017, advertisers allot only 3 percent of their $2.2 billion yearly budget to media aimed at Black audiences. Cloves C. Campbell, Jr., publisher of the Arizona Informant and immediate past chairman of the NNPA, said: “The interesting point to note is that Black media outlets are continuing to be bought up by White media conglomerates. Only then is there advertising support. The White agencies start to show up. When Blacks own the media outlets, as is the case with Black newspapers, White agencies try to dismiss and diminish our value.” Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Crusader newspapers in Chicago and Gary, Ind., argues that Blacks are too accepting of insults from companies they support as consumers. “As Blacks we have never capitalized on our buying power and the White media has now convinced advertisers they don’t need to advertise in our media and many of our consumers think that there is some prestige
and all the other words we have heard and chanted millions of times? I’d rather we follow words from Richard Allen: “To Seek for Ourselves,” Marcus Garvey” “One God, One Aim, One Destiny!” and Elijah Muhammad: “Do for Self.” I chose to hear some of those words in Williams’ speech, and I give him credit for speaking on the subject. It’s on Williams now to show us what he meant by putting his words into action; and it’s up to the rest of us to develop strategies and initiatives that will move our people forward. Jesse Williams spoke on issues that I have written articles on as far back as 1994, more specifically, one titled, “The Young and the Relentless,” in which I described how many young Blacks were becoming entrepreneurs. Rather than falling for the okey-doke of buying and wearing someone else’s brand, they were developing, marketing, and selling their own brands. Unfortunately, as the article also cited, many of our young entertainers had succumbed to the lure of “OPS” (Other People’s Stuff ) e.g. Adidas, Nike, Hilfiger, etc. rather than “OPM” (Other People’s Money). It is ironic that in April 1997 Forbes magazine featured a front page article titled, “Badass Sells,” by Joshua Levine, which aptly illustrated much of the tremendous economic potential within the younger segment of Black America. It also described how the hiphop culture had been co-opted by designers such as Hilfiger and manufacturing giants
like Nike. Now in 2016, Alicia Keys is featured in a commercial for Levis jeans, in which she says, all women are “Badass,” so I guess it still sells. But I digress. Will Jesse Williams’ comments simply become last month’s shining moment for Black folks, or will his message finally be transformed into real economic progress for our people? Will his two minutes of enlightenment and in-your-face rejoinder to our plight make their way into the pantheon of speeches by our learned elders, or will they drift off into oblivion never having gained traction or made a significant difference in our lives? Will Jesse Williams’ one shining moment become activated within us to the degree that we begin to coalesce and collaborate to build an economic foundation from which we can truly have an impact on public policy? Fiery rhetoric, overwhelming applause, and 2 million “hits” and “tweets” are not enough to get the job done. We must have action; we must have a critical mass of Black people who are willing and able to work to make our economic and political empowerment a reality. Yes, we had yet another shining moment when Williams took the stage to accept his award. Will its sheen fade to Black, or will that moment turn into momentum for Black progress? Remember: A moment is not a movement, but a moment can start a movement.
in identifying with White,” explained Leavell, a former president of NNPA. “More importantly as a race of people somewhere along the way we have lost the desire to value and strengthen our institutions.” Brian Townsend, publisher of the Precinct Reporter in San Bernadine, Calif. and former chairman of the NNPA Foundation, said, “The influence of Black media on Black consumers is diminishing solely because of reduced advertising resources, not because of reduced demand. Our readership is still vibrant and appreciative of our efforts.” Some of the problems facing Black Press, such as dwindling circulation, are industry-wide concerns. According to the 2015 “State of the News Media” study conducted by the Pew Foundation, Black newspapers “are hard to measure as a group, though, because few have audited audience figures. Among the five larger African-American newspapers that do, four saw sizable declines in total paid circulation (which includes both print and digital) from 2013 to 2014 - ranging from 7% for the New York Amsterdam News to 19% for the Chicago Defender. “Only one of the five papers examined, The Philadelphia Tribune, saw an overall increase in circulation in 2014. The total growth was 40% - though all but 2% of this is attributed to 5,200 copies of their digital replica edition distributed as a part of the Newspapers in Education Program.” Pluria Marshall, Jr., who owns both newspapers and television stations, said Black media should become more adept at exploiting social media. “Advertisers don’t, in large part, respect the general market daily papers,” said Marshall, publisher of the Los Angeles Wave Publications Group. “So we are at a disadvantage when we pitch business. We are no longer in
the print business, we are media companies that happen to use print to deliver a message. We have to better embrace the web. Online is just one component that should be incorporated with print, across the board. Clients want it and we have to deliver it.” Like Marshall, Rev. R. B. Holmes owns a Black newspaper, the Capital Outlook in Tallahassee, Fla., and broadcast properties, including two radio stations. “I think it is important that Black media must find a better and creative way to survive and thrive in these days,” he stated. “When all Black institutions are struggling for relevance and revenue, including HBCUs, the Black church and our historic civil rights groups, this should be a clear call to find our collective voice. Blacks are great consumers but very few leaders have been able to rally us to overcome the Black economic drought in the Black Press.” Leavell feels some African Americans may have grown too comfortable under a Black president for nearly eight years. “More than anything many of the Black magazine owners forgot their mission and were too anxious to emulate the White magazines,” she said. “They were and are pretty much like they thought that with the election of Barack Obama that we were living in a post- racial America. Many of the owners were and are too consumed in their personal wealth, so many sold their products and ran to enjoy the good life.” With dramatic changes in demographics, Black media outlets will be under increasing pressure to sell their businesses to Whiteowned companies, just as BET and Essence did. In doing so, they may be giving up the thing that distinguished them from their White competitors - their unique perspectives.

Moving from Home to a Nursing Home laxed feeling. Kitchens are often open to residents, decorations give a sense of home, and the staff is encouraged to develop relationships with residents. Combination. Some nursing homes have a combination of hospital-like and household-like units.
By Glenn Ellis
George Curry Media Guest Columnist
Even though home-based nursing care is a growing trend in the United States, placing a relative in a nursing home may be one of the most difficult and traumatic decisions a family member can make. More than 1.8 million people live in nursing homes. About 7.4 percent of Americans aged 75 and older lived in nursing homes in 2006. A nursing home, also known as a skilled nursing facility, is a place for people who can no longer be cared for at home. This can include people with critical injuries or serious illnesses, or those needing care after surgery. Nursing homes have been long viewed as cruel, impersonal, uncaring places where elders are taken because no one in the family wants to bother with them. However, today's nursing homes are highly regulated, high-quality institutions for the care and treatment. Nursing homes can take many forms in today's society: Hospital-like. This type of nursing home is often set up similar to hospital. Members of the staff give medical care, as well as physical, speech, and occupational therapy. There can be a nurses' station on each floor. As a rule, one or two people live in a room. A number of nursing homes will let couples live together. Household-like. These facilities are designed to be more like homes, and the day-to-day routine is not fixed. Teams of staff and residents try to create a re-
Many nursing homes have visiting doctors who see their patients on site. Other nursing homes have patients visit the doctor's office. Nursing homes sometimes have separate areas called "Special Care Units" for people with serious memory problems, including dementia. The average cost of nursing home care is more than $67,000 a year and tops $100,000. You can pay for nursing home care in several ways, including: Medicare. For someone who needs special care, Medicare, a federal program, will cover part of the cost in a skilled nursing home approved by Medicare. Check with Medicare for details. Medicaid. Medicaid is a state/ federal program that provides health benefits to some people with low incomes. Contact your county family services department to see if you qualify. Private pay. Some people pay for long-term care with their own savings for as long as possible. When that is no longer possible, they may apply for help from Medicaid. If you think you may need to apply for Medicaid at some point, make sure the nursing home you're interested in accepts Medicaid payments. Not all do. Long-term care insurance. Some people buy private longterm care insurance. It can pay part of the costs for a nursing home or other long-term care for the length of time stated in your policy. Many different companies sell this type of insurance, and benefits vary widely. Look carefully at several policies before making a choice. The average nursing home patient runs out of money within
six months and must turn to Medicaid. Those who don't go into a nursing home often rely on care from family members who provide it at no charge to the state, but at a cost that can be their health, time and stress. Deciding to move into a long-term care facility can be a difficult and emotional decision. Equally difficult is choosing a facility. One important measure of a good nursing home is to find how they are rated by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS oversees federal payments to nursing homes and assigns the star ratings. Each nursing home receives an overall rating of one to five stars, based on its number of stars in three categories: state-conducted health inspections, how much time nurses spend with residents and the quality of medical care. You can find out the rating of any facility at www.medicare.com. Nursing homes may often seem scary and depressing, and moving into one can fill people with a sense of betrayal and failure. Family involvement is important in helping the older person make the transition to a new living arrangement. Remember, I'm not a doctor. I just sound like one.

Maybe I am NOT the baby’s daddy Ask Alma: by Alma Gill

Dear Alma, My wife and I divorced after 38 years of marriage. I still don’t understand why, I want to work it out, but she does not. I had intended on spending the rest of my life with her and now that won’t happen. We had our up and downs, but overall I thought we had a solid commitment and happy marriage. I was happy. She said that she was not and that I never listened to her. She also gave many other reasons that I don’t think are true or care to discuss. Sometimes I feel like my life is over. I have listened to all her lies and lately I’ve been thinking about my children and how I don’t think they look like me and I wonder if I am their father. When they were young and we were married I didn’t think much about it. But now they are all adults and listening to their mother and all of her lies, it makes me wonder. I want them to have a DNA test and I want my wife to pay for it. I do not want to discuss this with anybody in my family. Can you tell me where to get a DNA test of your children? Signed, I Want A DNA Test Dear DNA Test, Oh no I won’t, but what I will do is try to stop you before you commence to making a mockery of your marriage and children with such foolery. Don’t you dare consider asking your adult children for a DNA test. You’ve raised them and they believe you to be their father, so then, that’s it – you are! Your statue of limitations to confirm that has passed. Look on the bright side, like my mama use to say, “you feed ‘em they’ll favor you.” LOL. So put your glasses back on. I get the impression you’re a man of few words, and since I totally
disagree with you, I won’t keep you long. Asking for a DNA test from your children will only devastate and alienate them and you don’t want to do that. You’re hurt and the thought of finding love again seems impossible. Understandingly so, you were not planning to live out your latter years alone. Here’s my point, as long as you have life, you have another chance at love. The mind can be tricky during the healing process of heartbreak. Having endured more than a few myself, I remember every negative thought or action becomes totally consuming, taking you to a place where you can’t clearly decipher rational from irrational. I’m sorry you weren’t able to work things out with your wife, but I assure you, your life will get better. Check out some old family pictures, you’re surely to be surprised and I hope tickled by the moments of reminiscing. Your kids look like you when you were younger, it’s you who changed. Age crept up on you and made a few adjustments, LOL. Please, adhere to my advice, drop the notion or need for a DNA test. Don’t demean the love of your children as a pawn to get back at your wife. Whenever there’s an opportunity for you to continue to be the best father possible, you should take it. Invest in yourself, get back out there, go the church, volunteer, join a gym. I know it may seem difficult as the days go by, but wake up appreciating life every day. This experience is the end of marriage, not your life. Meet death by surprise, don’t allow it to become a destination. The rest of your life can be the best of your life. It all depends on you. Alma

GENTRY: MAVS benefit from draft continued from front page Moments later the upswing continued and the buzz got louder as the Mavs, at press time, were finalizing plans to sign both Barnes’ teammate Andrew Bogut, and in a surprise move to Mavs fans everywhere, Seth Curry - yes, Steph’s little brother - as well. Welcome to the NBA Free Agency, where anything can and usually does happen. Only 72 hours before, things were looking hopeful for the Mavericks when the NBA Free Agency period opened up July 1st. When the clock struck 12 midnight, the Mavs had their sights on reeling in big fish Hassan Whiteside the Miami Heat center, Mike Conley of the Memphis Grizzlies and Nicolas Batum of the Charlotte Hornets. Despite meeting with the players, the Mavs missed out on all three of their targets as each returned to his respective teams, fat contracts in hand. With the ghosts of free agencies past looming, Dallas was once again left scrambling for contingency plans. To add insult to injury, Conley reportedly helped lure away Mavs golden boy Chandler Parsons who signed a four year, $94 million max contract…money the Mavs were unwilling to part with for Parsons who had to have surgery on his knee last year, then a second surgery in March. So with Whiteside, Batum and Conley staying put and Parsons out the door, the Mavs’ free agency plans took a nosedive until Kevin Durant literally declared his Independence on the Fourth of July and left the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Warriors. And with that move the Mavs were able to sign Barnes - who entered the summer as a restricted free agent but to whom the Warriors renounced their rights after Durant’s decision – agree to a trade for Center Bogut, and sign Curry who played for the

Sacramento Kings who renounced their rights as well, making him an unrestricted free agent. These potential signings (contracts can’t be finalized and signed until the NBA lifts its moratorium on July 7th) are nice pick-ups for the Mavs who had plenty of holes to fill. Barnes, a small forward will give Mavs fans someone to root for in the Olympics in Rio as well as he is a member of the USA men’s basketball team. His deal is reportedly for four years and $94 million. The 25-year-old forward was a starter with the Dubs who this year won an NBA-record-setting 73 games, the NBA Championship last year and the finals this year. The 6’ 11 Bogut is a strong center, but has struggled with injuries throughout his career including in his left knee during this year’s finals, which caused him to miss Games 6 and 7. The Warriors went on to lose Games 5, 6 and 7. In a bit of irony, the Warriors struck a deal with veteran center Zaza Pachulia, who will fill the vacancy created by Bogut’s departure. Pachulia played last season with the Mavericks. The Mavs will also receive a future second-round draft choice. Curry, a guard is finalizing a two-year $6 million deal with the Mavs. He will come off the bench for the Mavs joining fan favorites J.J. Barea and Devin Harris. The Mavs have also re-signed Dwight Powell, their restricted free agent to a four-year, $37 million contract that includes a player option for year four. They are also bringing back veteran point guard Deron Williams for a deal ESPN has reported as one-year for $10 million. If all deals hold and stay in place, the Mavericks starting five will be Williams, Wesley Matthews, Dirk Nowitzki, Barnes and Bogut.
