Attorneys Benjamin L. Crump and Damario Solomon-Simmons called for immediate charges and vigorous prosecution against the officer who fired the shot. They also called upon the City of Tulsa to implement mandatory body cameras for officers. They intend to clear up the misconception that Terence was reaching in the car window. According to their review of video tapes the window was up. Keith Lamont Scott, 43, was a married father of seven living in Charlotte NC. He was killed on September 20. Protests in NC have taken a violent turn. Terence Crutcher, 40, was a father of four living in Tulsa, OK. He was killed last week.

Zika is a real threat by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Today, I am writing about Zika, again. Earlier this year, I penned an op-ed linking climate change and infectious disease. In this particular case, I focused on the Zika virus because our South American neighbors were facing a major outbreak of the virus and several North American cities had already seen travel-associated cases. It was time to act to prepare to handle this disease. I wrote this in February. Now, I write in September, and Congress still has not taken any action to fund the agencies that would deal with preventing this disease’s spread. More than 200 days after President Barack Obama requested emergency funding to fight the Zika virus, there are now over 20,000 Zika virus cases across the U.S. and territories, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. It baffles me that funding an imminent and growing disease is a point of contention. Let’s review the numbers. Nearly 1,400 pregnant women in the U.S. and territories have become infection and in the U.S. alone, more than one dozen babies have been born with the birth defect microcephaly. One of those infants, born in Texas, has died. Experts have estimated that 25 percent of the population of Puerto Rico, including

www.garlandjournal.com

pregnant women, will become infected by the end of this calendar year. In Florida, there is an active vector-borne outbreak in two areas of Miami, causing the CDC to issue its first domestic travel advisory in history. While Florida suffers, other Gulf Coast states, including Texas, must be prepared to engage in vector control efforts when the virus spreads. While Congress failed to act during the spring, then again in the summer, I urge my constituents and all residents of Texas to be vigilant and aware of the threats of this disease. There is a common misconception that if you are not planning on becoming pregnant or are not currently pregnant, you do not need to worry about the Zika virus. This is not true. If you become infected with the Zika virus, symptoms are mild and you may not suffer, but another mosquito can become infected from you and continue to spread the virus. All individuals are at risk of contracting and contributing to the spread of disease. While I urge you to stay informed on prevention, transmission, travel notices, and cases of Zika virus at http://www.cdc.gov/zika/; I want you all to know that you are entitled to a better government, one that protects you. I hope it serves you well before the end of this year. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson currently serves in Congress representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

Dallas Police Chief steps down To say the past year has been challenging for Dallas Police Chief David Brown would be an understatement. While crunching numbers, and making some tough decisions regarding staff, the Dallas native met his critics head-on while also receiving support from several community-based groups that praised his leadership. Remaining calm under pressure is something the 33-year veteran is known for and that’s just what he did when faced with an assault by what was eventually described as a lone shooter on a mission to kill police officers. The shooter, 25-year-old Micah Johnson would end his spree, but only after killing five officers, one from Dallas Area Rapid Transit, and injuring 10 other officers and one civilian. Chief Brown received praise from Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, law enforcement officials from across the country , and President Barack Obama, who attended a memorial service in Dallas for the slain officers. There were mixed emotions when the Chief announced that he was resigning. On social media, some questioned whether or not he was being forced out, while others praised him and speculated that he was leaving on a high note and under his own terms. A 33-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, as Chief of Police, he commands a department comprised of over 4,000 employees and oversees an annual operating budget of 426 million dollars. Chief Brown holds both a Bachelor of Science and Master’s (MBA) in Business Administra-

tion. Chief Brown is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy, FBI National Executive Institute, Senior Management Institute for Police, the National Counter-Terrorism Seminar in Tel Aviv, Israel and the United States Secret Service Dignitary Protection Seminar in Washington, D.C. Chief Brown also holds Master Peace Officer and Police Instructor certifications from the State of Texas. Chief Brown said he would be holding a press conference to discuss his decision to leave the department in October, 2016.

Dallas County DA resigns Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk, after months of speculation, resigned from office recently. The resignation of Hawk will give Texas Governor Greg Abbott an opportunity to appoint a Republican to a seat that Democrats say they intend to recapture in the 2018 election. While wishing Hawk well as she deals with recurring health issues, leading political officials such as State Senator Royce West said that he was “disheartened” that Hawk had not offered to resign earlier, allowing Dallas County voters, rather than the governor, to select her successor. Senator West said that it would have been best if Hawk, who was elected with bi-partisan support, would have placed the decision in the hands of voters rather than the state’s chief executive. The first Republican elected to a countywide office since 2004, Hawk has battled mental health issues since being elected in 2014, de-

feating the first African American to DA, Craig Watkins. Although several months ago she met with journalists and candidly talked about her mental health issues and her desire to get back to work, following treatment, in her resignation letter she said, “...my health needs my undivided attention. More than my words could express, I appreciate the grace l’ve been shown as I’ve tried to balance my health and my duties. This has been a very difficult decision for me.”

SMITH: See you at the State Fair Classic ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN’S OPINION

by

CHERYL SMITH

This message has to be short and sweet. No need to beat people over the heads. This is just a simple request. I’m calling all alumni and friends to the floor. We have some here but we need some more! That’s right, it is time for us to stand up like never before. Sure we can have fundraisers and submit proposals for corporate support. After all, corporations have benefitted from hiring HBCU graduates so why shouldn’t they give? But more importantly, why shouldn’t we give? Right now we are enjoying Black college football. Enjoy the games, the pageantry,

the parades, the fashion shows, the concerts, etc. But remember that there is so much work to be done and every dollar helps. Last weekend the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter Dr. Vivian Bradley Johnson of the Florida A&M University Alumni Association honored two of its best and brightest who live in the metroplex. It was such a joy hearing FAMU alums Dr. Vivian Bradley Johnson and Lynne Coleman share their experiences and their love for their alma mater. What is equally refreshing is knowing that they are committed in more than words, but by their deeds. They are loyal supporters of Florida A&M where they

not only got a quality education but found their life partners! Since receiving her doctorate Johnson has worked at Parkland, climbing the ladder to VP of Pharmacy. And Lynne, who Lynne Coleman took a position at JCPenney upon graduation is now the Vice President of Women’s Product Development. FAMU is good enough for their children and they are also exposing other youth to the wonderful opportunities that are part of the HBCU experience. October 1 is another opportunity to share some of the Black College experience with area youth. Buy some tickets and take some young people to the State Fair Classic. Alumni

pay for your tickets. Grambling State and Prairie View A&M Universities are some fine institutions with rich traditions. Some of our best and brightest have walked their floors and grown from the experience. If the survival of our HBCUs doesn’t become a priority, we are in for some tough days ahead. We can’t expect others to give and fight when we sit on the sidelines. Our ancestors never thought they could or would make it to college, still many donated or made sure their children had the opportunity. So even if you didn’t attend an HBCU, still give. What a noble cause to embrace. It is so much better to do something because it is the right thing to do, instead of only supporting the things that you benefit from. We need our HBCUs. Our HBCUs need us. Keeping in mind that every bit helps, now the question becomes, “what are you going to do?

Donald Trump: Talkin’ Loud And Sayin’ Nothing By Rev. Al Sharpton

As I watched Donald Trump on Friday in Philadelphia meeting with Black Republican leaders, then visiting a Black Church in Detroit over the weekend, and also giving an interview to the Impact Network (a Black Christian religious network) I waited and waited to hear his policies on why Black America should try him as something new. Trump claims we have nothing to lose; he even said that he would be unveiling a new civil rights agenda. But the more he talked, the more I thought about a song that my surrogate father, the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, made that contained the following lyrics: “Like a dull knife just ain’t cuttin/ just talkin’ loud then sayin’ nothing. After combing through all of the public reports, and after interviewing Bishop Jackson on my MSNBC “Politics Nation show (Trump visited this Bishop’s Detroit Church), I do not see a hint of an agenda or a suggestion as to

ties that impact our lives. We know very well what happens under Republican leadership versus Democratic leadership on both local and national levels, and our votes coincide with that reality. I understand from Bishop Jackson that Trump said he’s willing to meet with civil rights leaders including Cornell Brooks of the NAACP, Mark Morial of the National Urban League and myself just as Clinton did. That meeting should be for him to not only hear from us, but for him to outline his agenda in all of the areas I mentioned and how he would put his background as a businessman to practice. Absent that, this weekend was just a series of photo ops. Maybe he can’t lay out policies because he’s appealing to a fringe right crowd that would object and he doesn’t want to lose their backing. Maybe if he had a set target or percentage of how many Black businesses he would create or support in order to alleviate economic inequality for example, that would fly in the face of some of his base. Maybe this is precisely why he opted not to give any specifics and use a dull knife that didn’t cut the butter in Detroit. Just talkin’ loud and so far, sayin’ nothing.

HALL: Trump’s Coon Platoon!

Quit Playin’ by Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.

As if racism and oppression were not enough, Black folk also have a history of bearing the weight of those who look like “Brothers” while acting like the others. That’s right… its good ‘ol Uncle Tom. And whether it is the Occasional Oreo, the Borderline Bootlicker, or the accommodating Afro-Saxon, they all represent a treasonous threat to our liberation. The most recent example is Donald Trump’s Coon Platoon. These blatant opportunists suffer little persecution or penalty for their sins. They walk among us proudly. These political parvenus flaunt their newfound riches, while maintaining their rightful place in Massa Donald’s house. By November 9th, there will be no further use for them. Even “Good Niggres” have a limited shelf life. In days past, Coon’s were at least bearable. Renegade Negroes like U.S. Rep. Alan West whose well pronounced self-hatred was fodder for Conservatives from the coasts

of California to the mansions of Maine. And then there was Super Tom, aka, Armstrong Williams. He was a mainstay of Conservative talk shows, as well as one of “Uncle Cholly’s” favorite columnists. Armstrong stumbles over polysyllabic words, akin to Trump’s tweeting lackey, “Passa” Mark Burns. Burns’ verbs and nouns engage in eternal conflict. Armstrong was a handpicked Ninny too, but even he is smart enough to keep Trump at arm’s length these days. The near-sighted, green contact wearing Burns is an unabashed water boy for Trumpism and disrespects the legacy of the Black pulpit. Not only is Burns semi-literate, but obviously brain dead given the fact that he published lies about his education and claimed a fraternity that he never joined. Hey Rev! That’s why they call it the World Wide Web!! The 13th Amendment abolished slavery,

but Trump is coy enough to read between the lines. You can’t buy or sell a Negro, but it’s still legal and cost effective to rent or lease one. Trump dropped some crumbs and these pigeons flock to his every move. According to Lawrence Ross’s August piece in The Root; “Donald Trump’s Factory of Ignorant Black Surrogates”, the list is longer than I realized. The “wrong” Reverend Darrell Scott, whom TV One’s Roland Martin made an absolute fool of during a May interview is part of the Coon Platoon. Failed actress Stacey Dash, Dallas’ Katrina Pierson and Sean P. Jackson made the list. Jackson who heads up Florida’s Black GOP Caucus complained that he was “forcibly removed from one of Trump’s clan meetings is also among Trump’s enlisted ethnic imbecile infantry. Trump’s Coon Platoon however, is incomplete without its leader, Omarosa Manigault. Unlike the other “One trick ponies” in Trump’s employ, Omarosa actually has a brain and had a respectable following before sign-

5

ing on to do tricks and triage for the Trump campaign. Manigault is an HBCU alum, a television star, an ordained minister and worked with the Clinton administration. The word is that she was a scheduling correspondent for VP Al Gore although she, like Burns “broadened” the role. Omarosa claims she was “Deputy Associate Director of Presidential Personnel.” Hmmm! If pounding Trump’s protégés with a plethora of pejoratives is offensive to you…then good. That’s exactly the way Obama supporters have felt since Trump announced his candidacy. Hopefully the smears and verbal venom take hold. One of the reasons Trump’s Coon Platoon is so roundly despised is because Blacks hate Donald Trump for his racist, five year “Birther” campaign. Trump’s idea to “Make America Great again”, sounds a lot like making South Africa’s Apartheid system legal again. Show us your papers Negro or suffer the consequences. Trump’s Negroes need to quit playin’. They too have a responsibility to Black children, and to the 91% of the world that is non-white, and none too happy with Trumpism and America’s hypocrisy. The Alt-Right is more of the same for us, but Trump’s Coon Platoon is just downright insufferable. #FriendsdontletFriendsVoteTrump!

President makes urgent call for Black Voter Turnout By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. (President and CEO of the NNPA) Last Saturday, we were pleased to witness, firsthand, President Barack Obama’s keynote address at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 2016 Phoenix Awards Dinner; it was his final speech, as Commander-In-Chief, at the celebration that included Black members of Congress, celebrities, civil rights leaders, journalists and corporate partners. Thousands of guests in their blacktie attire gave the President of the United States of America a rousing standing ovation in response to his speech that focused on the progress that we’ve made, as a nation, during Obama’s eight years in the White House. But the most poignant and dramatic utterance by President Obama during his remarks happened when he energetically stated, “There’s no such thing as a vote that doesn’t matter. It all matters. And after we have achieved historic turnout in 2008 and 2012, especially in the African-American community, I will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy, if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election.” President Obama emphasized, “You want to give me a good sendoff? Black Women Beware: Are Our Hair Products Killing Us? By Danielle James Atlanta Daily World

A bombshell new report from Black Women for Wellness, an LA-based advocacy and research group dedicated to the health and wellness of Black women, released a 60-page document this spring with shocking finds linking many major hair care brands to toxic and poisonous chemicals. The report, titled Natural Evolutions: One Hair Story accuses the hair care and personal care industry of lacking regulation as well as causing major health problems among Black women. We aim to expand healthcare access, reduce toxic hair care chemicals that are prevalent in our community and build political advocacy in California and beyond. ~ Black Women for Wellness, Mission Statement After five years of research (including data collection, focus groups, and historical research), the research indicates that our beauty routines may be contributing to our demise. The consistent exposure to certain prod-

ucts is affecting our health. HelloBeautiful spoke exclusively to Teni Adewumi, Environmental Justice Research and Policy Analyst for Black Women for Wellness, explaining the reasoning for conducting this study. “There wasn’t a lot of literary information on the products that we use and what that specifically means for Black women. The little information and the little research we found was not very promising. We wanted to know what group of black women might be most impacted.” “Really looking at the products we use as Black women, we use these products more frequently than any other ethnic group. We wanted to know if these products were affecting us in any kind of way.” ~ Teni Adewumi on why Black Women for Wellness conducted this study Black women and girls already have a disadvantage and overwhelming burden as a result of disparities in health care. The Robert Wood Johnson

Foundation, the United States’ largest philanthropy dedicated to health, estimates Latinos and African-Americans experience 30 to 40 percent poorer health

the report: Reproductive Issues The American Journal of Epidemiology determined that the use of hair relaxers is linked to

outcomes than white Americans. Our hair health is at risk due to lack of information of products, affecting the safety of hair dressers, and causing serious health issues including respiratory problems, obesogens, and cancer at higher rates than our female counterparts of other races. Here are the findings from

uterine fibroids in Black women and girls. This will affect approximately 80% of Black women over their lifetime. The study interviewed more than 23,000 Black women across the span of 12 years (1997-2009) and found two-to-three times higher rates of fibroids among Black women. The possibility of unregulated and untested chemicals as well

as the amount of chemicals we place in our hair and scalp is potentially dangerous. While Black Women for Wellness admit that there is still more testing needed to determine birth outcomes and the use of hair care products, they do present information regarding the links between miscarriage, low birth weight, and chemicals found in products used by hair dressers that are causing some concern. They bring light to the fact that even though the national rates of infant mortality have been decreasing, “Black women still have rates of infant death 2.2 times higher than White women (11.46 to 5.18 respectively).” Respiratory Issues The One Hair Story research paper called out a UK study that estimated 14-20% of cosmetology students drop out during their first two years due to contact dermatitis. 7 out of 10 hairstylists will likely suffer a form of work-related dermatitis during

their career. “Hair care professionals work with many chemicals that are known to adversely affect the respiratory system. Chemicals such as formaldehyde, ammonia, and bleaching agents have been known to lead to breathing difficulties such as coughing and wheezing, heightened sensitivity, and in some cases occupational asthma.” ~ Natural Evolutions: One Hair Story It’s estimated that African-Americans are almost three times as likely to die from an asthma-related cause in comparison to White Americans. According to The One Hair Story, “Increased risks from traditional asthma factors such as air pollution and occupational exposures leave Black hair dressers at a greater risk for harm.” “My friend [has] 20 years in the industry,” one focus group participant said. “My friend doesn’t have fingerprints anymore…my friends can’t go to the DMV and put their hand down and [get] fingerprints anymore.”

One-on-One with Mayor Rawlings My Day By Dr. J. Ester Davis

What is going right with Grow South? What in your opinion is going wrong? How do we strengthen neighborhoods? Where are the homeowners associations? We want to publish them. Let me hear from you. And most importantly, how do we encourage homeownership in the southern neighborhoods? We. . . can easily do this . . . one block at a time. As you can see, the City of Dallas is changing. . . we are experiencing a major facelift and the mayor is front and center of the faceoff. Last week Mayor Rawlings sat down with southern sector media to hear candid, unfiltered feedback on what’s going right and what’s going wrong. His most poignant message was about building neighborhood associations and listening to people that live in these areas … those who best understand what is needed. So, ok. . . Oak Cliff folks. . . where are your voices? Back in 2012, The Dallas City Council laid out a roadmap for targeted areas outlining expectations for potential growth. The bar of the Grow South Initiatives were al-

ready up; now being raised to core investment areas divided into three categories. Today, we stand witness to these patterns of growth, the promise and the splendid orchestration of their successful finale. Briefly, let me remind you of the three most watched focus areas. The Pinnacle Park Expansion adds a core project in The Canyon at Oak Cliff, a mixed-use development adding office, retail and residential

growth in the area. In this focused area of North Oak Cliff is the Bishop Arts District, the iconic Dallas Streetcar and the cosmetic changes of Jefferson Boulevard. The Riverfront Boulevard is getting a new look and may be near the proposed Texas Central Railway “high speed” rail station. (Stay tuned for any changes on the high speed ‘bullet.’ Rail station still under discussion)

www.garlandjournal.com

The second most watched area is the Education Corridor, adopting the Inland Port of Dallas, an international economic engine. With the University of North Texas at Dallas anchoring the massive industrial and warehousing districts, this vision is powerful. It tempers tremendous potential because it offer jobs, job training, diversity and mass transit with the new DART line. Most importantly, it has its own traffic channel, i.e., Interstate 20, ready- access to the Texas Horse Park, aka, River Ranch and/ or DFW Airport. We are watching the third focus unfold daily before our very eyes. The Lancaster Development, being the most famous, is the address of the Dallas Veterans Administration ongoing extension, one of the largest in the nation, along with the $30 million dollar Lancaster Urban Village, completed with public and private investments, which is one of three residential, office and retail developments. To be quite honest, Southern Dallas really has it going on. And I did not even mention the Southwest Center Mall, Dallas Executive Airport and their neighborhoods. We have to mention the West Dallas Gateway (welcomed by the new graciously beautiful Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge) and the row of restaurants at the base of the Ron Kirk Walkway Bridge overlooking the Trinity River. Ok, Oak Cliff folks. Ball is in your court. The Mayor of Dallas wants to hear from you. Speak Up!! Change is here. Hope is at the door. Greatness is coming.

Ask Vanessa:

What does your resume say about you? Vanessa Morrison is a HR copywriter, a New Hire Consultant/Coach. She has been in business for seven years writing resumes and now teaches others and is the author of Maximize Your Job Success Series, most recently Maximize Your Job Success – Writing Your Resume – 8 Essentials to Get HR’s Attention to be released this fall. For speaking engagements, you can contact her at 214-810-5790.

Ask Vanessa addresses the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Q. Why Do I Have to Submit A Resume and What Does It Mean? A. A resume is a marketing highlight of your own experience, highlights and accomplishments. This gives you the opportunity to shine from the perspective of the employer of problems that you have solved. It is widely used by every employer and gives the employer a glimpse of what you have accomplished in a period of time. It also lets the employer know how you’ve accomplished it and it gives insight into who you are. In most cases, an employer has about 20 seconds to look over your resume. So, what you put on paper you have to make it count. Q. Do I have to submit every job I have ever had on my resume? A. No you don’t have to submit every job you’ve ever had. You should submit the job that is related to the job description. The going trend is no more than 10 years of employment. If you don’t have 10 years of employment, then list the jobs you have that are related to the job description and put the others in a different section. If that doesn’t work, then put the jobs you have, paying special attention to the functions of the job that are related to the job description. If you don’t have enough experience, then use your volunteer experience or your role in an organization to compensate for it. Q. What is most critical when preparing my resume? A. What is most critical when preparing your resume is located in top third of the resume. After listing your name and address, one should have all of the following. When an employer looks at your resume, they want to see the position you are applying for example: Training Manager, Account Payable Coordinator, Customer Service Representative, etc. Second, the next thing they focus on is the Profile Summary, the Summary Statement, the Executive Profile or Profile, this replaces the Objective Statement. The Objective Statement is not used anymore. Third, is Professional Experience, Last is Education and Organizations or Volunteer Experience. We will go more into the Profile Statement in the next publication. You can submit your questions about your resume to resumereminders@gmail.com.

The struggles of an interracial marriage, families divided by race, religion and politics and the conversion of one Jewish woman to Islam are all upcoming segments that will be featured on Bishop T.D. Jakes’ new talk show which premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Monday, September 19 and is scheduled to air Monday through Friday. Jakes, one of the most influential pastors in America today, who has written books, music, plays and movies, said that his show could even provide discussion on topics like the Black Lives Matter Movement and controversial subjects like the National Anthem protest by Colin Kaepernick and the rape trial of comedy superstar Bill Cosby. “When we can get them, we’re not shying away. We will do stories that are in the headlines,” said Jakes, 59, the senior pastor of the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas and the author of the New York Times’ bestselling books, “Instinct,” and “Destiny.” “I think there is a great need in our country right now for something that is uplifting and that builds bridges and causes people to rethink themselves,” Jakes said. “Much of what we see on television doesn’t accomplish that. I’m hoping to bring the kind of conversation to America that’s informative and inspirational and still entertaining,” he said. Because he’s well-known in the pulpit doesn’t mean he’ll be preaching on the talk show, Jakes said, noting that he can reserve sermons for Sundays. “That’s not all of who I am,” said Jakes. “I’ve seen a lot of things, I’ve met with presidents and interacted with CEOs.” Jakes continued: “I’ve been to the courtroom and watched a crying mother say goodbye to her son; I’ve been to visit those on death row. I’ve been there when individuals have been disconnected from life-support; I’ve been to drug interventions. This September marks 40 years that I’ve been in the ministry, so this isn’t anything that’s new, only [now] I’ll be in front of the cameras.” If social media buzz is any indication, the new show will be a hit. The show’s Twitter handle, @TDJakesShow, had almost 23,000 followers before a single episode had aired. Jakes said that social media will play a big role in his new venture. “We want people to tweet or go on Facebook to continue the conversation,” he said. “You can’t always solve a problem in the 45 minutes you have on the show and I don’t see this just as a show, but as a network communication device to uplift people. So, after the show is over, you can still go on social media to keep the conversation going.” Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter or other websites, it’s important to reach those who use social media, the bishop said. “The stats say that hardly anyone sits in front of a big screen without a little screen in front of them in their hands and I’m guilty of that too. Being able to engage in every medium is important and I have a huge respect for the power of social media.” Produced by 44Blue Productions, EnLight Productions and T.D. Jakes Enterprises, the show will tackle various topics including human trafficking and heroism. Jakes noted that he’s thrilled to be on OWN. “Oprah Winfrey is an icon and a business mogul who has become a national treasure. I consider her a personal friend and I’m honored to have her support my new show,” he said.

Dear Alma, My parents divorced when I was nine. It was cool, because I spent a lot of time with my father and I got along well with my stepfather. My biological father and I had a great relationship and spent weekends and holidays together. Things changed after I graduated from high school. My father worked three jobs and was very serious about instilling in me the importance of hard work, but he didn’t see the need to go to college. He did everything for me, but he wouldn’t pay or contribute to my college education. I talked to him and told him how important it was to me, but he just wouldn’t. He didn’t even come to my college graduation. I didn’t then and still don’t understand. I’m now a father and will do everything to help my boys go to college. I have a great salary and have started their college fund. Here’s the reason I e-mailed you. My father’s health is failing. He isn’t ready for a nursing home, but he needs help, because he lives alone. I don’t want to help him, because he didn’t help me. How can I explain to him, he doesn’t deserve my help? Signed, My Father’s Son Dear My Father’s Son, Hmmmm, slow your roll my darling. I sympathize with you and totally understand your side of this situation, but you know what – you’re wrong. Yep, you’re wrong and your Daddy was wrong and two wrongs don’t make one right. Your life didn’t start when you graduated high school. Sounds like the two of you maintained a wonderful relationship up until then. His teachings and example of

www.garlandjournal.com

hard work, propelled you many a night when it came to cramming, and hitting those books, I’m sure. I know you are hurt and you felt abandoned, but you know what – you did it; you succeeded. His decision not to donate or contribute to your education didn’t stop you from completing your academic goals and graduating from college. Congratulations to you. Sure, you’ve got student loans and other grown up bills to pay, but don’t we all? It’s time to let that go. In my opinion when it comes to caring for our parents, that’s a responsibility regardless of the relationship, unless there’s some kind of abuse. Reason being, both of my parents have gone on to be with the Lord and you know what, I can’t remember one argument. I don’t recall one disagreement or a time when I just didn’t want anything to do with them. Mind you, there were many LOL moments, I just choose not to recall. At this stage of my life I’ve realized, none of that nonsense was important anyway. You’re the creator of the life story your sons will recall and remember. You have an obligation to rewrite this chapter when it comes to what happened between you and your father. You can blaze a new path in your family legacy, one that includes the support for education. Teach by example to your sons and be there for your father. Show your young men how you are honoring your father in his time of need, here at the end of his life. Choose to be at your best for your boys. It’s not about your Dad or the cracks in the wall of your relationship. This is about what your sons will see, while they’re watching you, be the best son you can to your father. Alma

Paul. Enough Said Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork. Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding. Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history. Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Sound familiar? See World today… Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ. It’s another perspective of one of my favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide. It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted and influenced so many in the world then, and also in

the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one encounter with Christ. That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live. It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power. I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow. If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way. Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you. It, your faith, also sets you up and apart to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior. I guess what I’m really saying is when the going gets extremely tough, check the human being Paul. Like Christ, he’s been through and has experienced the worst that life has to offer. But because of his belief system, he’s experienced the best of God’s promises. It’s like a refresher course and I just wanted to let you know where I go during difficult times. You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out. Have you ever wondered why those who have been through so much are able to stand and witness mightily for Christ? Reexamine the reality of God’s grace and you just might get your answer. May God bless and keep you always.

The community was incorporated in 1891 and is today a major manufacturing and industrial hub for the entire D/FW Metroplex. Located adjacent to northern and eastern Dallas, Garland is a culturally diverse city with a rich history. The community celebrates a vast array of shopping, arts, outdoor activities and special events.

Kaepernick speaks up, forces fans to confront racism in America

Finding Senior Housing can be complex, but it doesn’t have to be. “You can trust A Place for Mom to help you.” – Joan Lunden

The DeSoto High School volleyball team knelt during the National Anthem prior to their game earlier this week. The teammates were supported by their coach, school board trustee president Carl Sherman and other community leaders. In a written statement, Mr. Sherman said, “In DeSoto, we teach our students to become thought leaders and active participants in their educational process. While their actions may make some people uncomfortable, I applaud these students for exercising their First Amendment rights in a civil, non-confrontational way. None of us have the right to infringe on the rights extended to our young people as American citizens. I am thankful for our coaches and administrators who allowed our students to take the road less traveled. It is my prayer that it makes all the difference for our students, our community and these United States of America.”
