Flag On The Play: A Community’s Response to NFL Owner’s Declaration Concerned clergy, organizers, activists, and those who seek liberation and justice, prepared a statement in response to the recent comments made by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: “…if any of (his) players decide to exercise their first amendment rights and not stand/ take a knee during the playing of the national anthem they will be benched indefinitely.” Many surmise Jones statement is grounded in his unyielding loyalty to American patriotism, when in fact Jones’ statement is a reflection of his commitment to the protection of and participation in American capitalism - ideals which are the core of America’s national identity. Therefore,
Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III Spokesperson
We reject the supposition put forth by Jerry Jones that the players’ actions are unpatriotic acts and the denial of players’ right to exercise their liberty to peacefully protest. We reject the continuing state-sanctioned murders of unarmed Black children, women and men whose murders have gone unpunished. We stand on our moral authority to call for an end to the terror unleashed on our communities. We affirm the moral courage of players who have taken a knee - daring to put a mirror up to the face of America and force this nation to see the acts of violence perpetrated against Black and Brown bodies. We affirm and stand with Colin Kaepernick’s initial stand for justice in response to police brutality. To this end, we are calling for a: • Reclamation of the original narrative which was in response to police brutality. • The establishment of a Citizens Review Board with subpoena and investigative power. • Reform in the money - bail system. It is the right of every American citizen to express outrage against police brutality and white supremacy with moral clarity and peaceful dissent. The fight for justice is never contingent upon popularity or the consensus of the majority. This fight for justice is rooted in love for humanity.

Providing Prevention to a Fatal Disease – Breast Cancer
By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us, and this gives us the time to remember all those who have gone through the intrusive experience of breast cancer. It is paramount that we continue to spread awareness all year to ensure that females and males across the country know the actions to take to prevent breast cancer. At the moment, besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer for women and is the leading cause of cancer death for women. Through the dedication of all our efforts, we can ensure more women are survivors. According to findings of the Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Program, in 2017 approximately more than 250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among U.S. women. And this year in Texas, there is to be more than 17,000 total expected new breast cancer cases, including 139 cases among males and 17,132 cases among females according to the Texas Cancer Registry. It is vital that women both go to their doctors annually and do daily checks on their own to ensure that there are no unusual lumps, swelling, rashes or changes in shape to their breasts. Frequent checkups allow women to know their body better and provide the ability to discuss changes more accurately with their doctors. Additionally, mammograms are extremely important
must continue to take precautions in our country that help women become more aware of their risks for breast cancer and help them be proactive in their health. For instance, African American women should consider receiving a breast cancer screening prior to the age 40 in order to reduce further complications or risk of fatality.
number of deaths from breast cancer for women between the ages of 40 to 74. Mammograms spot cancers and tumors that need to be treated, and there are many options for women to find available screenings. Women can ask their doctors for screening, and there are also some local health programs that offer mammogram screenings at little to no cost. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides screening services, which includes clinical breast exams and mammograms to low-income, uninsured women in the United States. We must continue to support all females both in their awareness and in their treatment. Currently, it is estimated that 12.4 percent of women who are born in the United States will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives, leaving about 1 in 8 women with the lifetime risk of breast cancer. These numbers are too high. We
WWW.MYIMESSENGER.COM
Additionally, we must speak about the dangers that breast cancer holds for men in our country. Men with a family history of breast cancer, along with other factors, can cause an increased risk for breast cancer in men. Usually men with breast cancer have lumps that can be felt. Survival for men is similar to survival for women with breast cancer who are at the same stages, however, breast cancer in men is often diagnosed at later stages, decreasing the likelihood for curing the cancer. While the chances of breast cancer in men are rare, it is still important for men to be cautious of their risk and take precautionary measures against breast cancer. This October, I urge you all to push awareness of breast cancer to everyone. This is a health concern that every American needs to take seriously to ensure the health of all men and women. As we continue to teach and inform others about the risks and precautionary measures one can take, this allows us to have a community in Dallas with healthy, active, and informed people.

UNT Dallas announces hiring of Douglas as Exec. Director of TRIO/Precollegiate Programs The University of North Texas at Dallas has hired a transformative leader in education to spearhead its vital pre-college initiatives with the selection of Nakia Douglas as Executive Director of TRIO and Precollegiate Programs. Douglas joins the UNT Dallas executive staff after serving the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) in key leadership roles since 2004. For the last 18 months, he has been the DISD Executive Director of the South Oak Cliff Feeder Pattern and responsible for supporting the principals, faculty and staff at 12 campuses. Douglas is also the founding principal of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA), and has been the principal of a DISD high school, middle school and elementary school during his career. “I first became aware of the educational skills and leadership of Nakia Douglas when he led the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy near our campus,” said University of North Texas at Dallas President Bob Mong. “Those first impressions and my admiration have only grown as I have come to know him better. Our school, community, and especially the children of our community benefit greatly from his presence.” Douglas is a Dallas native and graduate of Lincoln High School. Do All Lives Matter?
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
Apologies to the Alt-Right haters who possibly thought this was payday; a Black man dissing the Black Lives Matter movement. For my Black Lives Matter “FAM”; you were possibly quick to read the headline and brand me Benedict Arnold. Before either group gets into your feelings: calm down, this ain’t about a movement, this is about emotions. Somehow in this nation we have developed a penchant for preselecting those who are worthy of universal and celebrated grief. Predictably, most of our national grief centers on men and weapons. We grieve when we lose police officers, first responders and soldiers. There is an expected and required response for those who die in “combat.” So what are we to do about a struggling single mother who loses her son to senseless gun violence in Urban America? What about the natural death of a teacher who devoted her life and much of her earnings to three decades of children that she didn’t birth? What about parents who lose children to automobile accidents or any other type of deadly mishap? Does anyone else’s burden weigh less because they aren’t a Four Star General and rightfully proud of a son lost following in his footsteps? Don’t get pissed…Ponder! Does a “Gold Star” parent grieve and become depressed differently than any of the
12
families in the “Fallen 58” in Las Vegas? No, they don’t. This fascination with “honor labeling” has become an epidemic. The real tragedy is that Americans honor labels more than life itself. Maybe we have been desensitized by deaths posted hourly in print and broadcast media. Perhaps movies that glorify gladiators who gun down “the bad hombres” by reflex are part blame. We have become so capitalistic, opportunistic, pessimistic and ritualistic that we rarely stop long enough to care about death, much less grieve.
saw. He begs his sister not to allow the doctor to amputate the hand but inwardly realizes that he has already lost too much blood to survive. The boy dies while under anesthesia, and everyone goes back to work.” Scholars have assigned several meanings to this poem. Some conjectured that Frost railed against the lack of child labor laws that may have prevented the boy’s death. Still others committed that Frost was in full allegory mode. Frost, having been forced to return to America from England because of World War I, may have been protesting the loss of innocent young men to senseless wars commenced by the insolence of much older men; Men who have already lived long and good. Either way, Frost ended “Out, Out” with one of his patented, superfluous summations. “And they, since they were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.” Frost exposed a lack of empathy that has become the story and stain of America. There is another Frost poem that could be the antidote to our ailment. If we were to take; “The road not taken,” surely life could be different. If we quit elevating property rights over human rights and birthright over civil rights, America could finally be “Great.” All lives could matter if we began to take that road less traveled. That one thing could make all the difference.
Consequently, we have lost part of our capacity to appreciate any life other than our own or our loved ones. Robert Frost penned this reality in a 1916 poem; “Out, Out.” Here’s the Cliff Notes. “A young man is cutting firewood with a buzz saw in New England. Near the end of the day, the boy’s sisVincent L. Flag On The Play: A Community’s Response to NFL Owner’s Declaration
Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III and others kneel at Dallas Police Department after discussing narrative surrounding protest during national anthem. #kneelingforward By Betheny Sargent Texas Metro News
Monday October 16, 2017 Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, Sr. Pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church and other notable Black alliances gathered together in front the Dallas Police Headquarters. The message was pure, simple and straight to the point, “We will not be silenced while others sit and stand by idly.” Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner has made less than supportive remarks about the players of the NFL and how he will not tolerate players being involved in politics, specifically utilizing the game time to demonstrate their stance on police brutality. Last year former NFL star Collin Kaepernick, demonstrated his frustration with police brutality with a peaceful protest during game time by kneeling during
14
the National Anthem. Since then Kaepernick has been blackballed from the NFL. Some players were not okay with this and have vocally expressed their disapproval of Kaepernicks’ silent protest on social media; while others in various sports have also kneeled. Over the past few months speculation of collusion between NFL owners and President Donald Trump has sparked fury and rage in the black communities across the country and now Jones has been added to the list of colluders as well. Several members of Black Dallas Communities addressed the media and talked of a protest to speak out about Jones’ comments and illustrate solidarity with Collin Kaeperick and anyone else who exercised their First Amendment rights. “I’m boycotting the NFL this season, I started in September,” said Pastor Haynes, who was one of several members of the
clergy in attendance. “I took offense to Jerry Jones’‘We stand or we won’t play’ statement because it was offensive to what America is supposed to be about. We are hoping this gets to him (Jerry Jones). “He violated what America is all about.” Pastor Haynes said he has been a long standing Cowboys fan for a while, when asked about his patronage of the team; he admitted that due to the comment, the Cowboy’s team has been taken away from him. “We are waiting on a response from Jerry Jones before we make our next move.” Other speakers including retired educator Shirley Ison-Newsome, veteran Ernest Walker and Next Generation Action Network’s Min. Dominique Alexander spoke of their frustration over the mandate handed down by Jones.Their messages were similar to Pastor Haynes as they expressed their feelings about a

I Messenger Rose appointed to House select committee on opioids and substance abuse Continuing Efforts to Curb the Impact of Opioids on Texans
Rep. Toni Rose
Austin, TX - State Representative Toni Rose (D-110), has been appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse by Texas House Speaker Joe Straus. Created to study the issue of opioid abuse, substance use, and substance use disorders, the committee is charged with analyzing state impact and will recommend solutions to reduce the presence of this growing Texas epidemic. "I am honored to have been appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse," said Representative Rose. "The use and abuse of opioids continues to increase and negatively impact the lives of many individuals in Texas. Many are unaware that almost half of all U.S. opioid deaths involve a prescription opioid." In 2015, the most current year of available data, 145 Dallas County residents were amongst the 1186 Texas residents who died as a result of intentional poisoning
18
OCTOBER 27, 2017 from selected opioids. According to the US Center for Disease Control, the number of deaths related to opioid overdose continues to increase. In 2015, 63.1% of the 52,404 drug overdose deaths in the United States involved the use of an opioid. During the same year, approximately 2 million individuals in the U.S. suffered with opioid use disorder from prescription opioids. During the 85th Regular Legislative Session, Representative Rose sponsored legislation to develop medical guidelines requiring doctors to prescribe an opioid antagonist to patients at high risk of an overdose at the time they are prescribed opioid medication. Opioid antagonists like naloxone immediately reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. Opioid overdose is not just a problem for those who abuse the medication and can occur when the medication is taken in conjunction with other prescribed treatments. The House Select Committee on Opioid and Substance abuse is charged with reviewing the impact of substance use disorders and substance abuse in women, homeless individuals, veterans, those in the criminal justice system, and those suffering with mental illness. The committee will determine the number of programs available, the number of individuals receiving these services and the current state-wide need for services. Additionally, the committee will review processes currently used by state agencies to monitor and deter prescription drug abuse in programs funded and administered by the state. "It is important to ensure this epidemic does not continue to destroy lives. We must be diligent in our efforts to develop solutions to ensure access to adequate healthcare while protecting the lives of Texans," said Representative Rose. Elected in 2012, Representative Toni Rose represents District 110, which includes Oak Cliff, Highland Hills, Pleasant Grove, Balch Springs and parts of Mesquite. Representative Rose serves on the
House Appropriations, Calendars and Human Service Committees.

Texas Legislature. Texas House Speaker Joe Straus (R-San Antonio) announced that he will not be seeking reelection to the Texas House of Representatives. “I sincerely thank Speaker Straus for his service and leadership over the nearly 8 years I have served with him in the Texas House,” said Representative Johnson. “One-party rule has been the norm in Texas for far too long. This state, like Washington DC, would benefit from more bipartisanship. Having a Democrat in one of the top three positions in state government would be good for Texas.” Rep. Johnson will consult with his family and advisers before deciding whether or not to become an official candidate for Texas House Speaker in early 2018.

Dad has lived his life, now it’s my time
Ask Alma:
Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter
Dear Alma: I am a 64 year-old divorced woman who lives with my father. Some years ago, when my marriage fell apart, and Mom was diagnosed with dementia, I moved back home to help my dad with her. I was also working part-time, so I couldn’t afford my own apartment. Two years ago, Dad and I could no longer care for Mom at home, so we put her in a care facility, and I retired. During this time, I have made new friends, three of them live in the state of New Mexico. A few months ago, I went to visit these friends, and fell in love with New Mexico. The cost of living isn’t as high as it is here, and the laid-back, small city life seems to mesh well with my personality. I feel this is the place I am meant to live the rest of my life. My problem is that Dad is 87, and I’m leery of moving hundreds of miles away, knowing there are some thugs in the neighborhood, who may try to break into the house once they learn Dad is there alone. Although I have a sister, she has
never been there for our parents the way I have been. In fact, our parents haven’t seen her in seven years. Some friends and relatives say I should go for it, since I’m divorced and childless, and also reminding me I’m no longer a young woman. Then, there are those who feel I’m being selfish for wanting to make this move and finally live my own life. Am I wrong? New Mexico is Calling Me
Dear New Mexico, Hello, my darling, thank you for taking the time to email me and to allow me the privilege to weigh-in on your situation. It takes a special person to care for elderly and/or invalid family members. I’m sending a big hug your way. I want to start by sharing that my mom lived with me and my family for the last two years of her life. She had come to a place where she could no longer live alone. Was my life on hold? Yes, but I wouldn’t take a dime for that time, as I’m sure, neither would you. You’ve already lived through the thick of it, so, there isn’t much more I could share with you about the “role reversal” regarding parental care. It’s hard, it’s thankless and it’s heartbreakingly some of the best times you’ll spend with your parents, unconditionally caring for them as they did for you. It’s an honor for us, but not so much for strong-willed parents.
Their eyes always seem to see you as the child they raised. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how many children you have or how many times you’ve been married. LOL. I can’t help but think, now that your mom’s gone on to glory, that you should continue to be there for your dad. Don’t abandon him now. Stay, give him the same love and commitment you gave to your mother. Your dad, I take it, doesn’t need as much attention, but that shouldn’t determine your decision. You’re doing it just, because it’s the right thing to do. Is it selfish for you to want a break, to want to relocate and start living your own life? Absolutely not at all, that’s normal and you have every right to feel that way. You’ve been an attentive, dedicated and loving daughter…don’t stop now. There’s no need to relo-
cate, just yet. Take care of your Dad and, every three months or so, go visit your friends for a week or two. Sadly, when your dad’s no longer with us—it’ll be time to make your move. I don’t have either one of my parents anymore, and I regret the extra time I missed spending with them every day, because I was busy, I had a family, I had people to see, places to go, things to do. So, trust me, you’ll never regret putting your life on hold by choosing to honor your mother and father. God is watching and will undoubtedly grant you the desires of your heart. Hold on a little longer, your day is coming. You gave and it will be given back to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Alma
