Business owner opens grocery store

For decades citizens in several southern Dallas County communities have complained about the lack of quality grocery stores in the area. Traveling miles to find fresh fruit and quality meats has been a challenge and a source of contention for many residents who didn’t see any

hope in site. Now thanks to businessman Joseph Kemp, City officials and task force members, and the leadership of former city councilman Tennell Atkins, a new supermarket will open Friday, October 28, 2016, 11a.m. at 3540 Simpson Stuart

Students at Dallas’ South Oak Cliff High School are literally begging for assistance from anyone who can help solve the numerous problems they face daily. Conditions at the school have continued to be a source of contention for students, teachers and parents as revelations of asbestos, mold, contaminated water, inadequate air and heating and a constant change of leadership have created low morale. Joined by Min. Dominique Alexander of the Next Generation Action Network, several students recently pleaded for changes. “Although the school board promised funding it is only a fraction of what is needed to build a new

school for the students comparable to their peers in more prominent school districts,” said Min. Alexander. “The Next Generation Action Network is asking that everyone be in attendance to #StandwithSOC regarding the issues that matter to us most, our children and their quality of education is very important to us.” Parents, concerned citizens and supporters were urged to attend the Dallas ISD School Board meeting, Thursday, October 27, 6p.m. at 2700 Ross Avenue. “South Oak Cliff High School students have endured so much such as contaminated water flowing through the pipes and this is a major concern,” said the Minister, adding that community organizations have worked hard to address this issue facing the students everyday like “termites spilling over into the hallways, asbestos, heating and cooling issues, gas leaks, even an electrical fire following the last student protest.” At a town hall meeting at Friendship-West Baptist Church, Dallas City Councilman Casey Thomas and Minister Danielle Ayers encouraged citizens to become involved by attending meetings.

South Oak Cliff’s Joy Williams holds a bottle filled with water taken from the school’s fountain. Above: Those gathered wondered if the dead squirrel on the grounds was a victim of the contaminated water they say has tested positive for lead. Attendees were encouraged contact elected officials, and stand with parents, students, teachers and alumni of South Oak Cliff. It is important to note that there are a number of pregnant teens attending the school and the water one student said could be detrimental to unborn children. A water drive will be held next month at the school but organizers are hopeful that the students will be moved to another building by then.

HALL: What Price is your Vote Worth? Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall While America’s “virtues” are being “Trumped” by a loudmouthed, government subsidized billionaire and his buffoonish behavior, there really is something serious to be considered about the 2016 elections. I received a political mailer from Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, which made me forget for a scintilla of a second who Donald Trump is. On the forward side, there were several, now deceased former Supreme Court Justices and they were juxtaposed to some of the landmark human rights and civil rights cases they oversaw. Next to these jurists are pictures of the plaintiffs. Just imagine the nine “Scottsboro Boys” who were saved from death row by a court overseen by Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes and court in the same frame and visual reference. To hell with all of that foolishness that flows from Donald Trump’s fountain of unforgivable ignorance and unprecedented insolence. The United States Constitution was created by rich White men for rich White men and the rest of America has the Supreme Court as our only salvation. But rather than offer some grand commentary on what Commissioner Price conjectured in his mail piece, let me

the Graca Machel Trust. I vividly remember meeting Graça Machel at her home in Maputo, Mozambique along with her husband South Africa President Nelson Mandela and my colleague Russell Simmons in 2006.” Chavis continued: “We discussed the ongoing struggle and movement to transform Africa for progress and the liberation of all who stand for freedom and equality.” Prior to her marriage to Mandela, Machel was the wife of Mozambique President Samora Machel. She also served for more than a decade as that country’s minister of education and culture. Machel said that WIMN will drive coordinated messaging and build awareness on issues related to health, education, and women’s economic empowerment, which will have a positive effect on women and children. “Given the influential role that media plays in shaping societal attitudes, the network seeks to change the present narrative of women that presents them as powerless victims and ignores the many positive stories and successes,” Machel added. “When economically empowered, women take control of their lives, set their own agendas, provide solutions to their problems and challenges, and develop self-reliance.” Machal added: “To build a strong and equitable future for all Africans, we acknowledge the fundamental contribution of women and ensure that we create a supportive and enabling environment where they are able to fully participate and benefit.” The network will also create an inter-generational platform to allow young talented female journalists to participate and work alongside the

continent’s more seasoned veterans. WIMN will comprise an initial group of about 30 to 40 women journalists, bloggers and influencers, officials said in a statement. “Women and children’s issues have tended to make headlines more as victims that are helpless, abused and exploited yet women and children have, over time, been capable of so much more, having overcome many obstacles and excelled in many sectors of the economy and society,” said WIMN board co-chair Susan Makore. “The amazing stories need to find more expression in our media. Therefore, I hope to do my part in ensuring that key stories that highlight and celebrate the various facets of children and women’s activities across all sectors are given prominence in the media by working with my colleagues that run media houses, especially in Zimbabwe where I hail from.” Bronwyn Nielsen, the co-chair of the WIMN advisory board, said that Africa’s youth and female dividends are at the core of the continent’s future and, with the right support. “It is a fact the women and children who can positively impact the future from an economic growth and development perspective,” said Nielsen. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members and all the members of this privileged network to jointly leverage our circles of influence under the esteemed guidance of Mrs. Machel to drive this agenda deep across the continent with both speed and passion.” Nielsen continued: “Together we can create a new narrative when it comes to Africa’s women and children.”

MISSING! Two women, One Man, A decade later

Talibah Islam and Typhenie Johnson are both missing and both dated the same man, Chris Revill.

Hadiyah Islam was watching television when she saw the story of Typhenie Johnson and her boyfriend, Chris Revill. She said she sat up in amazement because Revill was the same man that her sister dated when she became missing a decade ago. “When I first saw the story, I was shocked, felt hatred and then sadness,” she recalled. “If they had listened to us 10 years ago.” Instead as Revill sits in jail with a $50,000 bond, on kidnapping charges in the Johnson case, he refuses to give any

The fourth open enrollment period into the Health Insurance Marketplace begins Nov. 1, 2016 and runs through Jan. 31, 2017. Through the Marketplace, individuals are able to go to one place to search for health coverage options and choose from the health plans available in their area. The best source for information about the Marketplace is the website www.healthcare. gov. The website is available 24/7 and provides information on how the Marketplace works, what the benefits are and key deadlines. Individuals can also call 1.800.318.2596 to speak with trained customer service representatives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For individuals needing further assistance, Parkland Health & Hospital System will have certified application counselors available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday in Parkland’s Business Office to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide help enrolling in the Marketplace. The Business Office is located on the first floor of the old Parkland OPC, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, 75235. Certified application counselors will not be available at any of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “We will have a limited number of certified application counselors available to assist patients with the enrollment process,” said Rhonda Miller, Parkland’s Senior Vice President of Revenue Cycle. “We encourage those who may qualify for the Marketplace to log into the government’s website or speak to one of the government’s trained customer service representatives.” Most people must have qualifying health coverage or pay a fee for the months they don’t have insurance. Health coverage exemptions are available based on a number of circumstances, including certain hardships, some life events, health coverage or financial status and membership in some groups. Additional information on exemptions is available at www.healthcare.gov. In addition, a special enrollment period (SEP) outside of the yearly open enrollment exists for those with certain life events includ-

He has made a liar out of me! Dear Alma, Five years into my marriage my husband moved himself into the downstairs bedroom. The initial reason given was, “He didn’t want to disturb the babies” (including a newborn) with his late-night arrival, and early departures for work. Some months later, after a “marriage check-up” with our pastor, he confessed to me out of euphoria! He admitted that he had started smoking, you know; one of those things I never wanted in my life! Smoking is one of those “THINGS,” you know, those things you list as true deal-breakers, with regard to dating and relationships…FROM THE START! He admitted that he knew how strongly I felt about this, but he figured it was no longer a deal-breaker since we are married! On the one hand, I don’t see using this makes me feel as a justification for divorce. On the other hand, I feel betrayed, belittled, devalued, and bullied into being with someone I would NEVER had been with, if given the choice of him as a smoker. Signed, He has made a liar out of me!

Dear “He has made a liar out of me, Holy hot water hose, you’re infuriated! I can see the flames flickering from your email. Luckily, I’m here to distinguish this dilemma. Lawd knows what would happen, had you not reached out for help. Quick, duck, here comes a splash of reality–this ain’t about you, it’s about him. Him and his habit, he owns an addiction. I know you feel betrayed tossed and lost in the hot sauce, but the reality is, we’re talking about a serious dependency, a desire that requires you to fully satisfy by any means necessary. Do you wanna know how I know? I smoked for over 20 years before I could quit. Your body craves for the nicotine. That’s why people stand outside in a cold, snow, icy rain to take a smoke. As a non-smoker, what you don’t know is, smoking can be soothing, a stress reliever, it relaxes you. If you’ve never struggled with a compulsion, you just don’t get it. It’s his choice to make. He won’t win un-

less he’s all in. So, encourage your husband to make up his mind to quit smoking because it’s the healthy thing to do. Remind him you’d like for him to be around a long time for you and the kids, blah, blah, la-dee-da…you know what I’m talkin’ bout. Ask your doctor for brochures and suggested websites to share with him. Tell him you want him back upstairs, now! Yes, you’re right, smoking is a game changer, but you two can commit to get through this. Stop, read that again, I said you two. Handle your husband’s addiction with patience and tolerance. Don’t nag him, offer support. This will take time. I recall a conversation I had with a loved one who had battled a drug problem. During her last days, I asked, “why didn’t you ever just quit?” Her answer, “for every time you think I didn’t, I did times a million.” I assure you he’s trying, that’s what many smokers do, more than you and the rest of us non-smokers will ever know. A Night of Inspiration & Gospel By Dr. Felicia N. Shepherd FiNeSse Enterprises, LLC

Photos by Eva D. Coleman As the 2016 State Fair of Texas slowly came to a conclusion, fair goers have numerous stories to share about their experiences. One of the many stories should include the Night of Inspiration & Gospel Concert held on the Chevy stage on October 20, 2016. Hosted by Keith Solis & Shannon Thomas, Smooth R & B 105.7, this gospel concert brought old and new gospel music together all on one stage. The event kicked off with the DFW Unity Choir singing and praise dancers using their God given talent through the art of dance. The various artists brought their own unique style of praising the Lord to each song that was sung. Mr. Michael Bethany took the audience to church with his hand-clapping, feet-stomping song “Never Leave Us.” You could not help but get out of your seat and raise your hands in praise with Mr. Bethany’s performance. After rocking and clapping with Mr. Bethany, Ms. Angela Blair comes to the stage and sings a song my grandmother would have been singing along with her. “For Every Mountain” touched the elders that were in the audience and Ms. Blair’s amazing soprano voice took me to the mountain in praise and worship. Witnessing attendees waving their hands and lifting their eyes to the heavens, her angelic voice

touched the spirit of those in attendance. In between the acts, we cannot overlook the comedic a n e c dotes from THE Pastor Fred. Pastor Fred reminded me of a deacon in the church that says what’s on his mind in a manner that will have you wondering should you laugh or be offended. When the final act was being introduced, I saw so many young people approaching the stage before his name was announced. Grammy Nominee and multiple Stellar, Dove, and Billboard Music Award Winner Travis Green came to the stage and blessed the souls of all his voice touched. Seeing young people worshiping and praising God always brings a smile to my face. In these times of racial discourse, to see various groups praising God together was a beautiful sight to see. Black/ White, Republican/Democrat,

Straight/LGBT felt nonexistent during this brief onehour concert. The surprise of the evening was a special performance from Tamela Mann!

This concert was an inspiration to all those who sat in attendance as well as those who were walking around eating turkey legs and corn dogs, and listening from a far.
