need to fuse our racial and social bifurcations or face the potential of another pronounced civil conflict. This subsurface skirmish has gotten serious. Roberts Rules of Order is a system of parliamentary procedures that are based on the consideration of the rights: of the majority, of the minority (especially a large minority greater than onethird), of individual members, of

if you don’t get we are away get over it.’ Originally, I perceived it as a well crafted slogan…a passing philosophy. However, and over time, I have come to adopt it as a pearl of wisdom. This advice is the epitome of forgiveness. It’s a reminder to avoid the overindulgence of narcissism and bad will that has become America’s favorite pastime. We have

-Pastor/Mayor, Ronald E. Jones

My editors gave me the choice. I could either submit my article before the results of the Clinton v. Trump case was announced; or I could scurry to submit a post-mortem. I chose the former. It’s Tuesday afternoon November 8th. This is a shot in the dark. My mind and my spirit are thoroughly entrenched in addressing the aftermath, so I have some advice that should register if you’re “With Her” or….with HIM! The Reverend Mayor Ronald E. Jones is known as a very capable and professorial administrator. By precept and example, Doc is a seasoned public servant and professional. He carries himself with a pleasant demeanor that garners respect and regard, consistently. He treats people as he demands to be treated. Rev. Jones has been an assistant pastor and now a senior pastor. He was a very successful City Manager who later became the first African American to be elected Mayor of Garland Texas; a suburban bedroom community that has never been majority/

minority. Above the litany of sermons and political advice he has given me, his role as an ambassador and abecedary of “Roberts Rules of Order” was the most helpful. The tenets of RRO are certainly apropos today. As Americans, we

developed an unhealthy appetite for acrimony and insolence. In other words, we love nothing better than hate. It’s sad! Jones’ admonition is vital to all of us as we seek to survive the most socially divisive and spiritually subversive campaign in American history. Donald Trump has woven a thread of discord and undue suspicion that will last for decades. So, if your candidate won and you are living in a state of electoral bliss, there is no need to taunt or to throw shade on your adversary. The ass whipping was sufficient. If you cast your lot with the loser, you would be a better model to the toddler to teen demographic by accepting defeat with an attitude of graceful comity and gratuitous civility. Our children really are watching this time and they are much more emotionally invested than they should be. Trump has proven the need to reintroduce a solid Civics curriculum in our schools. But if we don’t handle the aftermath of this election correctly, we can never demand sportsmanship at any level or in any arena. I hope my candidate wins, but either way, this chapter has to be closed. Some of you need to get on with it, and everyone else needs to get over it. Period! NOVEMBER 11, 2016 By Kai EL´Zabar (Chicago Defender, NNPA Member) Good Morning, America. We just got Trumped. On November 9, America welcomed President-elect Donald Trump to the world stage. The Chicago Defender endorsed Democratic presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, because after careful examination, we believed that she was the best person for the job. However, the American people have spoken, and unlike our newly-elected president, we accept the voice of the people immediately. The president’s work is made up of a complex of serious responsibilities and requires that the juggling of all the balls in the air, while keeping each in focus with the realization that each individually is important and of significant value and has an impact upon the whole. It takes a wise and seasoned sage to comprehend that they are all connected in such a way that none of them can be ignored without having some effect upon the rest. Take President Obama, for instance. In September 2008, when faced with the worst recession in 80 years, at the time, caused by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, a sprawling global bank that almost brought down the world’s financial system. President Obama supported plans to bail out Wall Street banks and the auto companies, because he knew that if all those workers were unemployed, they wouldn’t be able to meet their house payments

or continue to shop and support their community retailers, or banks. Eventually, their communities would go bankrupt. Their communities would become ghost towns like Gary, Ind., Youngstown, Ohio or countless other cities that experienced downturns when their main industry disappeared. And where would we be now if President Obama didn’t have the temperament to see those decisions through? The concern is, that as president, most decisions that he makes are not do-overs. Filing bankruptcy as an out to escape your shortcomings and shorting the folks you owe, is not a viable solution in the Oval office. No, the president has to foresee the future based on the choices that he makes. Given that, heaven help us. We are not excited with glee or joyful that Donald Trump is president-elect. However, we will put forth our best to work to make America bearable. As a paper borne out of the throes of racism, segregation and inequality, we see our mission as more important than ever before. We have little tolerance or respect for a man who says, “Putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing.” This is central to all that really matters. If his campaign rhetoric offers any insight into how he will lead, here are a few things to remember: In the past, President-elect Donald Trump has voiced his intentions to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care, yet he has said little about the system he envisions putting in its place. Non-partisan analysts project that as many as 20 million people could lose health insurance if the law is reversed. He has promised to build a wall on the Mexican border. He has voiced his support of “Stop and Frisk” policies as well as racially profiling. He said that any doctor who performs an abortion as well as the wom-

an who receives an abortion should be punished, a statement he later tried to clean up. He has said that all immigrants in the country illegally must be deported — an estimated 11 million people. In a speech on immigration in September, he suggested that his first priority would be deporting undocumented immigrants who arrested for other crimes. He has spoken favorably of President Obama’s deportation policies. The administration has removed at least2.4 million immigrants since Obama took office. Trump has also called for barring any Muslim who is not a U.S. citizen from entering the United States. Additionally, he called for a “vetting procedure” for potential immigrants to ensure that they share American values in his speech in September. Clinton and Trump also take opposite approaches to taxes. Trump would substantially reduce taxes, mostly for wealthy Americans. Clinton, by contrast, would modestly increase taxes on corporations and the rich. Trump would reduce marginal rates on ordinary income — a change that would primarily benefit affluent families, who would pay a maximum marginal rate of just 33 percent, compared to 39.6 percent in the current system. Trump would also eliminate the estate tax, which is currently paid by when the wealthiest families, and instead tax any gains on investments when the investor dies. (According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, 51 percent of the savings from Trump’s tax relief would eventually go to the richest 1 percent of American households. His plan would reduce taxes for the typical household in this group by $317,000 a year.) Trump has argued that his proposals would be a major stimulus for the U.S. economy. The center, however, warns that if Trump simply funded the government’s operations by borrowing more money instead of through collecting taxes, the increase

in the national debt could have negative economic consequences in the long term. Trump is the first Republican presidential candidate to put forward proposals on child care. His plans would primarily benefit more affluent families rather than those with less income. He would allow families to save for child care in special accounts that would be sheltered from taxes. He would also allow biological mothers to apply for unemployment insurance in order to receive up to six weeks of maternity leave. Trump plans to allow families to deduct their child-care expenses from their taxes. This proposal would benefit families that itemize their deductions, who tend to be richer, federal data show. At the same time, Trump would also eliminate personal exemptions — a provision of the tax code that allows households to pay less based on the number of people in the family — and the head-of-household status, which gives single parents a break on their taxes. The result is that families with multiple children or single parents would not benefit as much from Trump’s other proposals, and some would even wind up paying more. Of course there’s more and it doesn’t look great for the average American. We are sorry that so little of what Hillary had proposed as plans to implement and further strengthen the American infrastructure was never addressed during the debates or on the campaign trail because she was charged with having to combat the negative allegations that were consistently drudged up over and over again by the Republican campaign. Such as the case was all this became the fodder to fuel the Republican campaign, because we believe that the president-elect had no solid plans. However, now he has to prepare and be ready to share his vision for

Trump wins presidency,

America rather than the great sounding sound bites that people took and ran with absence of substance and certainly not good for the average working person and definitely not those who are under-served. Questions like, How exactly is he going to increase jobs, bring back jobs to America, rebuild the American steel industry? Is there such a thing as clean coal?, need to be addressed. Well It was a long, tiresome campaign that was exhausting for the entire country and such a close race. However, the man who defied everything we know and expect of those who would be president is going to be the president beginning 2017. He won with 276 electoral (59,131,346 popular votes) votes to Clinton’s 218 (59,293,087 popular votes). Trump won swing states Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa, which made the difference, especially Michigan and Pennsylvania. Clinton took New Hampshire (?), Colorado, Virginia, Nevada. Clinton won more counties where less than 50% of the population is white, counties where at least 45% of the population is African American. Trump won the states that Mitt Romney lost in 2012, Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. Clinton said as president she would, launch her presidency with a focus on jobs and immigration. She says she would push Congress to approve a $275 billion infrastructure plan, look to bolster

10

continued from page 7

clean-energy manufacturing and ramp up trade enforcement. She has repeatedly promised to immediately pursue comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for immigrants who currently reside in the country illegally. On the other hand Trump promised that he would start by ending Obama Care and reversing a bundle of executive orders issued by President Obama, including ones that have shielded some unauthorized immigrants from deportation. He would push a variety of measures through Congress, including his plan to cut taxes and also his plan to spur up to $1 trillion in infrastructure spending. Perhaps most aggressively, he would change the United States’ long-standing stance toward international trade, formally signaling his desire to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, labeling China a currency manipulator and preparing to levy tariffs on China, Mexico and other American trading partners. Well last night the Stock Futures Plunge as Donald Trump Posts Surprising Win Sharp reaction seen as an indication of the markets’ concerns about a Trump presidency. This morning however it has seemed to have calmed after Trumps victory shocked the world. Another note: the Canadian Immigration site

crashed last night. Officials have confirmed that the cause was a higher than normal level of traffic. It has been suggested this may have been caused by US citizens exploring their options following Donald Trump’s victory. The tycoon confounded polls predicting he would lose to Hillary Clinton. “The Government of Canada is committed to secure and reliable IT infrastructure to‎ ensure high-quality services to all users,” a spokeswoman told the BBC. “The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship website became temporarily inaccessible to users as a result of a significant increase in the volume of traffic. “Shared Services Canada worked through the night and continues to work to resolve the issue to ensure that the website is available for users as soon as possible.” The problem was widely commented about on social media. MALVEAUX: Race, gender and healing The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

NNPA Newswire Columnist

Just a few days before the corrosive 2016 election, it occurs to me that no matter what the outcome, our social fabric has been shredded by the ugliness of this campaign. Sure, there have been ugly campaigns before, but this one has revealed the extent to which racism and sexism are acceptable features of life in these United States. Women, including Hillary Clinton, have been routinely disparaged, not only in politics, but also in their roles as television talking heads and anchors. While I’m not weeping for Megyn Kelley (she’s a big girl, and she can take care of herself), her on-air collision with Newt Gingrich was classic, with a jowly male bully loudly talking over a television host and accusing her of being “obsessed” with sex. And the disparagement of women flowed down the ticket – in Illinois, Senator Mark Kirk had the nerve to disparage challenger Tammy Duckworth because of her Thai heritage. Her dad traces his family’s military service back to the eighteenth century, while her Mom is from Thailand. When she cited her military background, Kirk nastily said he was unaware that her family had come all the way from Thailand to fight for the US. Shame on Kirk for demonstrating his ignorance by criticizing the military service of a woman who lost both her legs in the Iraq war. All’s fair, they say, in love and war, and many see politics as a special kind of war. And certainly, those women who play the politics game have to have thick skins and broad shoulders because men are not likely to treat women with kid gloves because of

their gender. However, gendered criticism (she lacks stamina, look at that face) is woven into the fabric of our nation’s racist patriarchy, and the “other” (women, people of color) is often put down using gendered or racialized code words. In some cases, as with Tammy Duckworth, people don’t even bother to use code words. The backlash from eight years of the Obama Presidency means that plenty of racists have come out to play. I thought we’d seen the last of David Duke, the reported KKK member who is again running for the Senate from Louisiana. Instead, he seems to have slithered from under some rock, just in time to endorse Donald Trump, throw shade on Evan McMullin (the Utah native and former CIA operative who is running a longshot campaign for President), and attack Jewish people. Most listeners recoiled from Duke’s hateful words, and the Trump campaign quickly distanced itself from the Duke endorsement. Shocking, though, that this level of racist hate is so openly articulated. And Mr. Trump’s racial rhetoric suggests that the Duke endorsement, if unwelcome, was at least somewhat consistent with that which Mr. Trump has been preaching. The use of terms like “law and order” or “stop and frisk” ignores the issues the Black Lives Matter Movement has raised, not the least of which is the police killings of young black people. And the Black Lives Matter Movement has been routinely been disparaged during this 2016 campaign. The disparagement of the Black Lives Matter Movement really disparages all Black people and reminds us that, de-

spite progress, race still matters. If racism and sexism are woven into the fabric of our nation, how do we pull those threads out without ruining the fabric? Or has the fabric already been so fully shredded that we have the opportunity to “start over”. Actually, there will be no starting over. Our economic structure and the credo of predatory capitalism depend on the ability of capitalists to extract surplus value from the work of those that are “other”. Capitalists maximize profits by minimizing expenses. Thus enslavement, though an inhumane institution, was also an efficient one for those who were able to use free labor. We’ve come a long way from enslavement, but the exploitation of workers continues, which is why the “Fight for $15”, which will disproportionately benefit women and people of color, is so important. This 2016 election has put many of our national wounds, and much of our fractured history, on display. Is there healing after all of this divisiveness? Washington gridlock isn’t likely to stop just because the election is over. Still, there must be leaders who are willing to talk solutions. When does our nation finally confront race and talk about reparatory justice? When do we, culturally, talk about sexism and the pay gap that remains, despite women’s progress? Or will we continue to limp along, wounds exposed, the fabric so frayed that it can’t be stitched back together? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? Race, Obama and Public Policy” is available via www.amazon.com

I Messenger ACA Marketplace open Enrollment period runs through Jan. 31, 2017 The fourth open enrollment period into the Health Insurance Marketplace begins Nov. 1, 2016 and runs through Jan. 31, 2017. Through the Marketplace, individuals are able to go to one place to search for health coverage options and choose from the health plans available in their area. The best source for information about the Marketplace is the website www.healthcare. gov. The website is available 24/7 and provides information on how the Marketplace works, what the benefits are and key deadlines. Individuals can also call 1.800.318.2596 to speak with trained customer service representatives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For individuals needing further assistance, Parkland Health & Hospital System will have certified application counselors available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday in Parkland’s Business Office to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide help enrolling in the Marketplace. The Business Office is located on the first floor of the old Parkland OPC, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, 75235. Certified application counselors will not be available at any of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “We will have a limited number of certified application counselors available to assist patients with the enrollment process,” said Rhonda Miller, Parkland’s Senior Vice President of Revenue Cycle. “We encourage those who may qualify for the Marketplace to log into the government’s website or speak to one of the government’s trained customer service representatives.” Most people must have qualifying health coverage or pay a fee for the months they don’t have insurance. Health coverage exemptions are available

NOVEMBER 11, 2016 based on a number of circumstances, including certain hardships, some life events, health coverage or financial status and membership in some groups. Additional information on exemptions is available at www.healthcare.gov. In addition, a special enrollment period (SEP) outside of the yearly open enrollment exists for those with certain life events including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby or adopting child. If an individual qualifies for an SEP, they usually have up to 60 days following the event to enroll in a plan. If they miss that window, they have to wait until the next open enrollment period to apply. Those who may need assistance can contact Parkland’s Customer Service department at 214.590.4900. I’ll take the baby but not the mama Dear Alma: I am a 25-year-old man. I consider myself very nice and caring. I live with a woman I met in February of this year. Things do not seem to be working out. I feel that I have been giving all that I can give. It has not helped that some of my life goals did not happen this year. I wanted to go back and work on a Ph.D. in economics, but I can’t. I am finding it very difficult to leave this relationship because she’s pregnant. I believe that this child deserves two loving parents, but if I am not happy, the best thing for the child is not a marriage. I am an independent type of person. I feel that I have very little private time. I feel that I constantly have to be with her. Lately, I’ve been thinking I should end the relationship. I do want our baby, but I’m not sure about the relationship. I wish I knew earlier what I know now. My best friend says I can’t leave while she’s pregnant. What do you think?– Signed, Not Ready

is that about? You mentioned wanting to go back and get your Ph.D. This leads me to assume you have acquired the prior degrees necessary to take that next step. While absorbing all of this, I have come to the conclusion that you have “book smarts” down to a science. What you’re lacking is common sense. When one makes the decision to be in a committed relationship and live with that person, intimacy allows the possibility

in real life and on a farm. You didn’t do that. You also didn’t mention “love” once in your submission. You said “I” so many times, I lost count. I’d suggest you spend time getting to know the person you decided to live with, who will become the mother of your child. Don’t focus so much on how she’s not the one for you. Learn to like her for who she is and the fact that the two of you will always be connected. I’m sure she has some great qualities; obviously you thought so, too, early on. It is your responsibility to support her during this time, emotionally and financially. She didn’t do this alone. You were a willing participant who’s now changed his mind. You’ve come to the conclusion that she isn’t the one for you, and that’s fine. But you do owe it to her and your child to have the best friendship the two of you can create. I agree with your friend: No, you can’t leave right now. You need to do what’s best for all three of you, not just you. Put on your big boy gloves and step up to the plate; prepared for game day. Prepare yourself to be the best father you could ever imagine. If it doesn’t come naturally in the form of common sense, buy a book–“Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge” by Etan Thomas is a good place to start. Alma

Attorney General Janet Reno

Janet Reno was the seventy-fifth attorney general of the United States and the first woman ever to serve as attorney general, the nation's top law-enforcement job. Reno was born on July 21, 1938, in Miami, Florida. The first of four children of journalists Henry and Jane Reno, she grew up in South Dade County, Florida. Her father, a Danish immigrant, wrote for the Miami Herald for 43 years. As a police reporter, covering news of the police department and local crime, he became friends with judges and law enforcement

personnel. This world became familiar to Reno at an early age. Her mother, a reporter for the Miami News, is remembered as an offbeat intellectual who wrestled alligators, read poetry, and befriended the Seminole Indians. She built with her own hands the Reno family home on the edge of Florida's swampy Everglades region. After graduating from high school, Reno attended Cornell University, earning a degree in chemistry in 1960. Following Cornell she enrolled at Harvard University Law School, becoming one of only 16 women in a class of 500. From 1963 to 1971 Reno worked as a lawyer for two Miami law firms. In 1971 she gained political experience when she joined the staff of the Judiciary

Committee of the Florida House of Representatives. In the spring of 1973 she provided legal assistance to the Florida Senate on a project to revise the state's system of rules and regulations for criminal procedures. These experiences were followed by a job as assistant state attorney for the Eleventh Judiciary Circuit of Florida. She worked for the Judiciary Circuit (the term refers to state court activities within a particular district) from 1973 to 1976. She was nominated as U.S. attorney general by President Bill Clinton (1946–) in 1993. During this time, Reno made juvenile justice a focus of her work. She became known for her attempts to find alternatives to the imprisonment of young people. She also tried to find ways that the

state could deal with troubled youth at the earliest possible age. She stressed the links between children experiencing care and love and the prevention of crime. She looked for opportunities to fight crime by building resources for children and education. On March 12, 1993, Reno was confirmed as U.S. attorney general by the U.S. Senate. In this position she saw to the enforcement of national policies on crime, race relations, immigration, corruption, and other legal issues affecting many aspects of American life. In the area of crime and law enforcement, she focused on broad programs involving efforts to help criminals reform and to provide treatment for drug offenders as a means of stopping

crime. She also supported gun control and the hiring of additional police. In addition, Reno argued for broad reforms to provide ordinary citizens with greater access to the courts and justice system. She stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of crime and violence. Reno suffered from Parkinson's disease, an illness that attacks the nervous system. As a highly visible and active public figure combating a severe illness, she has inspired others who live with Parkinson's and other serious diseases. Her achievements as a woman in the male-dominated legal field were also honored when she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in October 2000. She died Nov. 7, 2016.
