Marnese Barksdale Elder
New Leadership at Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce Although anticipated by many, it was an exciting moment when the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce announced the formal appointment of Marnese Barksdale Elder as its newest President. She transitioned from the Interim President role on March 1, 2017. This historic appointment makes Ms. Barksdale Elder the first woman president of the 90-year- old organization. She will also serve as President of the Chamber’s Non-Profit 501(c)3 Business Development Corporation. The Chamber’s Board Chairman Darren L. James commended the selection, “Marnese has done an excellent job over the last four and a half months in the role as Interim President.” Praising her efforts in a number of areas, he continued, “She has taken to her role and provided exceptional service in the daily operational needs and led the successful execution of our most recent major annual events; State of Black Business, 90th Annual Awards Gala and the 33rd Annual Quest for Success Luncheon.” The oldest Black Chamber in the country, this organization has continued to be a leader with some of the programs Mr. James mentioned.
4
Equally impressive for Mr. James has been the strides she has made in helping the Chamber to grow even more. “Marnese established new programs with our partners and affiliated agencies and transitioned previous corporate, member and board relationships as she grew in the role as Interim. It became clear that her energy, drive, experience and strategic visioning were tremendous assets for the Chamber.” As President, Ms. Barksdale Elder will lead the chamber toward its
historic centennial presence in the Dallas community – with the continued focus on developing and leveraging programs to catapult African American businesses. “I am honored to serve the Chamber and I believe that my broad experience in organizational effectiveness, community and civic engagement as well as my family’s long standing entrepreneurial success will aid me in my role as President,” she said. “I am excited to continue my service to the members and the Board of Directors as we forge new paths within the Dallas business community.” Ms. Barksdale Elder recently retired from Parkland Health & Hospital System where she served for over 20 years and held the title of Vice President and Associate Chief Talent Officer. She has over 30 years’ experience involving talent management, corporate strategy and community development. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University, where she serves on the General Alumni Board, and a Masters of Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University. A member of Links, Inc., Ms. Barksdale Elder is a former president of the Mid-Cities Texas Chapter. WWW.MYIMESSENGER.COM

“Woke” and Indivisible!
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
Resident Donald Trump was right about one thing that I must admit. He bragged and bellowed about a “movement” created during his rise to become Populist-In-Chief. The bad news for him is that the largest and loudest “movement” he ushered in is called “Indivisible,” and leans solidly toward the Democratic Party. If you want to get an intelligent post-op on the latest failed operation to surgically remove Obamacare, there are plenty of talking heads who are quick to give you the 411. Parenthetically, the 411 is vintage slang that beckons us back to the days before the internet. Paying customers would dial 411 and an operator would give them any telephone number they needed. Although Trump and his Nationalists rail against “free trade,” most of America’s job losses can be tied to technology. In other words, them Mexicans didn’t steal your job; it was them technical nerds from places like Bell Labs in New Jersey and the Silicon Valley in California. Anyway, I rushed over to one of my favorite colum-
nists to see if she had ‘poured any Tea” (check the Urban Dictionary) on why “Replace and Repeal” went down for the count. Maureen Dowd penned a personal missive to the Donald. You can peep the passage I liked best.
the ‘win’ that you forgot your ‘forgotten’ Americans, the older, poorer people in rural areas who would be hurt by the bill.” Dowd was right about “Grown up Eddie Munster” aka Paul Ryan. She was also
Indivisible Rally in Dallas
“You knew that Paul Ryan’s vaunted reputation as a policy wonk was fake news. Republicans have been running on repealing and replacing Obamacare for years and they never even bothered to come up with a valid alternative. And neither did you, despite all your promises to replace Obamacare with “something terrific” because you wanted everyone to be covered. Instead, you sold the D.O.A. bill the Irish undertaker gave you as though it were a luxury condo, ignoring the fact that it was a cruel flimflam, a huge tax cut for the rich disguised as a health care bill. You were so concerned with

right about Trump being more concerned with the quantity of his promises being fulfilled than the quality and substance of their worth to his constituents. But she didn’t explain the knockout. And as Chris Tucker gleefully announced to Debo in the hit movie “Friday”… Trump got knocked the f*@% out!!! Trump and the “Nation of No” known as the GOP, got knocked out for a whole different reason. GOP congresspersons took some heavy blows from the grassroots “Indivisible Movement.” Indivisible has gained a rate of velocity that only vigilant, vociferous citizens can amass.
Indivisible has given Democrats what the Tea Party gave the Republican Party; an unleashed Pit Bull that attacks any and everything that looks like it might threaten its master. The Democratic Party and its base have been docile, demure and self-deprecating for so long that no one knows how to approach this newfound inclination toward vim and virility. Democrats walk around now like Mike Tyson; stalking opponents without fear or specificity. The Democrats are “woke.” Look now…y’all got to get your own copy of the Urban Dictionary. But let me help you with this one. Woke according to “Lolak” goes like this; “Although an incorrect tense of awake, a reference to how people should be aware in current affairs. Example: “While you are obsessing with the Kardashians, there are millions of homeless in the world. STAY WOKE” Donald J. Trump unwittingly created a counter-movement that has given Democrats the courage to demand a social agenda that is broadly progressive, prosperous and populist. The Donald has mistakenly infuriated a majority of Americans who are “woke” and indivisible. He may regret it. Vincent L. Hall is an activist, author and award-winning columnist.

DFW/ABJ discusses community and police relations in McKinney
It’s been just under two years since McKinney, Texas made national headlines and caused a furor internationally after a pool party turned into a melee involving police and young partygoers and ending with allegations of police abuse and misconduct. What appeared to be an innocent gathering of teens turned into what some called an indictment of a police department that reacted inappropriately because of the racial makeup of some of the attendees. According to reports, police were called to a community because unauthorized teens were at a pool party. The footage of teenager Dajerria Becton being slammed to the ground by McKinney Cpl. Eric Casebolt sparked debate and led to protests, calls for community meetings, and yes, some volatile, race-focused outbursts. There were at least two casualties of the days’ event. A Bank of America employee that posted a racist rant on social media found herself unemployed, and the police officer who many blamed for his abusive actions and mishandling of the situation ended up resigning. Last week, the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists, at its monthly meeting, addressed community and police relations with a forum featuring McKinney’s Pastor Derrick Golden of The Amazing Church, Lt. Thomas Glover of the National Black Police Association and Min. Dominique Alexander of the Next Generation Action Network. The forum was held during the meeting at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center in Frisco. Members, students and community residents from the area attended and listened as panelists discussed community police relations and how to make them better. There are still problems today, as well as unanswered questions, said Min. Alexander, in his opening. “Why is it that Blacks and other minorities have to answer the question, how can their mom or dad afford this $300,000 home,” he asked. “I came to McKinney because the citizens asked me to come. The video of the incident went from three views to over a 1/2 million in a short period of time.” The nationwide attention, along with the video, was enough to galvanize various
6
segments of the community. There were town hall meetings and demonstrations, press conferences and community discussions. Still, said Min. Alexander, people are still without answers and unfortunately there has not been an apology issued to Ms. Becton. “People don’t know what has been going on since,” he said. “We forget about the people involved. Dajerria has gone through hell since this happened. She became more of a laughing stock. The City of McKinney never apologized. The family wanted to see if the Police Department would do something. Our Lives don’t matter.” Pastor Golden said the best way to deal with situations is to come together, everyone with a purpose and staying in their own lane. He said he met with pastors and made sure “we got our congregations together.” Lt. Glover, who works for the Dallas Police Department, said complaints of misconduct are not uncommon or infrequent. The long-time officer who has seen his share of community unrest said for the entire time he has been a police officer, he has heard similar complaints as the ones in McKinney. “People have been complaining all my 37 years,” said the Lieutenant, as he called on journalists to dig and get the real stories. “But for a camera, but for an audio tape; people would say it didn’t happen and the parties involved would have the audacity to deny it.” DFW/ABJ Vice President Eva Coleman said the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists often has forums discussing issues in the media. The forum was broadcast on Facebook Live and moderated by Kimberly Alexander (no relation to Min. Alexander). Both Ms. Coleman and Min. Alexander said that talking about issues is a way to build relations and mover forward. “We invited McKinney’s police chief but due to a recently filed lawsuit, he declined,” she explained. The next DFW/ABJ meeting and forum will be held in April and will focus on Hazing on College Campuses. For more information, log on to www.dfwabj.com IMNG

14th Annual “Eddie Bernice Johnson Math & Science Lecture Series” FROM THE HILL by
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Regardless of the composition of town halls, they are ultimately positive events, because allowing citizens to vocalize their desires directly to the people responsible for representing them. On March 24, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson hosted the 14th “Eddie Bernice Johnson Math and Science Lecture Series”, in partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas’, at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center in Dallas, Texas. The lecture series was started by the University of Texas at Dallas in an effort to expose Dallas-area high school students to career opportunities, and accomplished professionals in the disciplines of math and science. Due to the impending vote in Washington D.C. on the nation’s health care laws, Congresswoman Johnson was not in attendance. However, she sent greetings and remarks via her Director of Outreach, KL Newhouse, emphasizing the transformative
nature of science and technology and how it shapes the future. “Not long ago, Texas Instruments, right here at home, created the first micro-chip. That chip, about the size of a big moving box, was the first of its kind and it changed the world. Fast forward, and now micro-chips the size of your fingernail are hundreds and thousands of times more powerful. That micro-ship changed the way we think about and interact with the world around us. And so has been the rule of innovation. One discovery leads to another, and it changes the world around us.” High school students at Townview were able to listen and learn from two pioneers in chemistry and physics from

the University of Texas at Dallas, Dr. Walter Voit, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Material Sciences and Engineering, and Dr. Russell Stoneback, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics. Dr. Voit, spoke to students about organic electronics, and the use of thermomechanic shape memory polymers with 3D printed microchips to repair nerve damage. Dr. Stoneback, spoke to the students about his career journey from garage band member to research scientist, and the intersection of space weather in the magnetosphere and musical manipulations of soundwaves with light. Each speaker encouraged students to dream big and become the next innovators of STEM in the future.

That’s kool, I understand. This incident isn’t a reason for this friendship to be shaken. If anything, he’s trying to take advantage of the relationship. Because he is your BFF’s husband, dismiss him. You owe him nothing! Don’t allow him to manipulate and get you all in a tizzy. Stand tall, shoulders straight, pumps pointed forward, ready to deal with him directly. Say it once, you don’t even need to practice. This should come off as sweet as pineapple pie. Repeat after me “I’m not splitting any money with you.” That’s it, don’t ever discuss it again. You don’t owe him a reason, excuse or justification for your response. Nope, nada, nothing. Let me remind you that in this economy, jobs are tough to come by. The best reference anyone can have is an employee, who’s a friend that already works for the company.
