BRINGING THE WORLD TO YOU!
Spiritually Speaking By James A. Washington The concept of freedom has been rattling around in my brain lately. I am focusing on the freedom afforded all of us who claim salvation through Christ. There is something quite liberating when you know or realize that you have been “set free.” Have you ever thought about what that really means? The word release comes to my mind. Some claim relief as how they understand it. However you want to describe it, I think the revelation of Jesus as Lord and Savior removes a lot of barriers and obstacles and yes, burdens, that we as human beings place upon ourselves. That’s why I believe as people initially come to Christ, they are overcome by a fresh perspective about life. It’s an enlightened one; one filled with less pressure. I think that’s why folk cry in church when it happens.
NOVEMBER 20, 2015
Free and Good Enough! “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1. What are you a slave to? In a very real sense, addictions are withstood, hurt feelings are healed, guilt is removed and insecurities conquered when Jesus enters the picture. Whatever you have been enslaved by, you become freed from. One of the biggest things that happens when Christ enters your life is that fears are conquered. And if we’re honest with ourselves, we all have fears. I know I do. It can be the fear of being alone, of being without, of being humiliated, ostracized or even the fear of dying. The knowledge of Christ in all of these situations cancels those fears. You are released from them. That’s what I believe people mean when they say “set free.” That’s how I’ve come to understand real joy. In that context of spiritual awareness being blood bought and saved. I have been set free from fear, anger, greed, selfishness, self doubt and even self hatred. Believe it or not, so have you. These things have hopefully been replaced with honesty and integrity, hope and truth, confidence, self worth, the promise of everlasting life and yeah I know, above all love. One of the hardest things to understand in
this life, and then act upon, is this love yourself thing. God even commands us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Without Christ in your life, I believe that concept of self love can sometimes be distorted and in many cases become perverted. Love with humility is an awesome thing. When love is set free within you, life takes on a whole new meaning. You no longer have to live in the shadows of pretense; rather, you can now live in the light of truth. I can be who I really am and so can you. Then the world will see you as God sees you and not who you think it ought to see. I am who God made. If that’s good enough for God, then certainly it’s good enough for anyone who wants to deal with me and that includes you. I am free and it is wonderful. Freedom is my gift from God paid for by Jesus Christ. Know the truth and the truth shall set you free. You are not what the world would have you be. You are what God made you to be. Seek Him and you will undoubtedly find the real you. May God bless and bless and keep you always.
KINGDOM BUSINESS:
Setting Our Minds on the Things Above By Donald Lee Colossians 3:1-5,9,10 reads, If ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. (verse 1) Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth. (verse 2) For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. (verse 3) When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, and shall ye also appear with Him in glory. (verse 4) Mortify therefore your members (that is, put your body under subjection) which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (verse 5) Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; (verse 9) And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created Him. (verse 10) The scriptures we’ve just read serve to remind us that we are not our own, but have been bought with a price. The Lord Jesus personally became ransom for us. And because He shed His blood and His body was broken for us, that we — fallen man — might be redeemed back to the Father, we owe Him our lives. In other words, our every deed must be rooted in Him, centered on Him, on doing His will, which is the will of the Father. In fact, because we — as children of the most High God by the sacrifice of the Lamb Christ Jesus —
have died to the old man and are a new creation in Christ, we have a new nature. That new nature in us longs to satisfy God. And as Jesus says in Luke 2:49, … wist ye not that I must be about My Father’s business? (KJV) Luke 2:49 (Amplified Bible) Did you not see and know that it is necessary [as a duty] for Me to be in My Father’s house and [occupied] about My Father’s business? To put it another way, to “set our minds on the things above” is to be about our Father’s business. Saints of God, there’s a hurting world out there, a world longing for a Savior, a world needing God, needing to be brought out of darkness and into the marvelous light that we know and walk in. To set our minds on the things above — kingdom matters — is to minister to that hurting world; it is to minister to the broken-hearted; it is to share not just the Good News, but the wonderful news of salvation and eternal life through Christ Jesus. And, saints of God, if we’re going to be effective in being about our Father’s business, we can’t be caught up in the lusts of this world. We can’t, as the scripture admonishes us, engage in satisfying the lusts of our flesh. To indulge in “fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence (strong sexual desire), and covetousness (idolatry)” is to weaken — if not destroy altogether — the witness of a saint. One of the indictments against the church at large is that many of the very people who preach Jesus also are
yielding their members — or their bodies — to the aforementioned. As a result, the very people who need Jesus are the very ones who reject Jesus. And this is happening because of the way many in the body of Christ are misrepresenting Him. So, the saints of God must always be mindful that (as the adage goes) we are the only Christ some people will see. Therefore, we must recognize that if the unsaved is going to turn his life over to Christ, it’s going to have to be as he sees us walking out the Word that we preach. In the kingdom, there’s no such thing as “do as I say, and not as I do.” People are going to hear what we say, but above that, they are going to observe what we do. So what we do must be an accurate reflection of who He is. When we see someone caught up in sin, we must be there for that person to show them a better way — to show them how to live a life of consecration, a life set apart for the glory of God. I’ve found that many people do the wrong things, not necessarily because they want to, but because they haven’t (in many cases) been adequately shown a better way. But when we’re always mindful that we must be about “Kingdom Business,” which is our Father’s business, then we become more effective witnesses and more accurate representations of who Christ is and just how beautiful things are now that we are followers of Christ. So, when we set our minds on the things above — heavenly things — we are taking care of Kingdom Business. Hair and scalp doctor generates growth in awareness By Eva D. Coleman I Messenger
“If I can’t show the world who I am, do I really love myself?” Sanah Jivani asked during one of many hair raising moments of her scholarship acceptance speech. Jivani shared stories of being scared after losing all of her hair. Her triumph beyond the loss embodied the reason we set sail on this evening cruise where the stars glistened and reflected on the water. Embracing baldness. Restoring confidence. Generating growth. Dr. Linda Amerson's Cruise With a Purpose on the Lake Grapevine Tejas Yacht was informative and entertaining as she honored her scholarship recipient and enlightened others during alopecia awareness month. The sunset dinner cruise gave attendees a taste of more than just food. Dr. Amerson gave a brief overview of the hair loss condition, alopecia, and details of products she’s developed that have proven to be successful for those experiencing the effects of this autoimmune disease. She shared before and after photos that showed striking differences. During the cruise, Dr. Amerson recognized and honored her scholarship recipient who was on board. Amerson presented Jivani with a $400 check to further her studies at the University of Texas San Antonio. The sociology and communications major spoke about the opportunity to rise above the surface through written words that led to her award. “Writing that essay was really cool,” Jivani said. “It was the first time that I could really step out and talk about my alopecia.” Jivani added, “This isn’t something that a lot of people know about, but it’s important to me that people find out and I’m really glad that they’re starting to.” With Dr. Amerson at the helm of the ship, others not only found out
about alopecia, but were well informed about research and treatment options. “Certainly I would recommend Dr. Amerson just off of the information I heard tonight,” cruise attendee Devol Tolbert Designer Andre Terry said. “Alopecia is something I really didn’t know much about and she seemed to be very informative.” Veteran stylist Marion Forbes even benefited from embarking on this educational tour. “I’ve been a hair stylist for about 33 years and I have clients who actually have alopecia and it’s interesting to know that she has a product that can bring the hair back,” Forbes said. “I’m gonna get with her and see if it really works.”
Cruise guests
All attendees dined on a catered meal. An added sweet treat was the screening of Dr. Amerson’s Cruise with a Purpose music video, of which afterwards she taught the words to her song and led cruise-goers in participation of a live performance. The purpose retreated to the upper deck of the yacht for artistic indulgences showcasing local artist and entrepreneurs, some with a story to share about overcoming obstacles. Fashion was on display featuring designs from the legendary Andre Terry of It’s My Turn (IMT) Designs, Marquette Murphy-Smith of Je’Cour
Stylist Marion Forbes
Couture and Deidre Hardin of Copper Signatures. Also among the artists was vocalist Lady Soul who entertained the crowd with a live performance and demonstration of the line dance Lady Soul Slide. Plans are underway for a future voyage in blue, which is the representative color of alopecia awareness. “I’ve had a lot of interest from those who missed it,” Dr. Amerson said. To continue on this mission is something of which Dr. Amerson is fully anchored. “I do this to help our youth who are affected to help them with their goals because they are our future and to bring more awareness to alopecia,” she said. While Dr. Amerson awarded two scholarships, recipient Mayaah Peppers was not present on the cruise. Jivani however provided proof that Dr. Amerson’s goal is being realized with the announcement of her Love Your Natural Self Foundation geared towards building self esteem. “When I lost all my hair I was really scared and all I needed was a safe place, so I want this [Love Your Natural Self] to be something for young girls and boys to turn to when they’re having a really hard time,” Jivani said. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. I’m ready to get married
Ask Pam Hi Alma,
Q - I’ve been on Medicaid for several months and drawing SSI from Social Security Administration (SSA). I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when I turn 62 next month? A - That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits.com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area. The Tug McGraw Foundation, founded by baseball icon Tug McGraw, father of country music legend Tim McGraw, tips its hat for a race that is sure to last for quite some time. “We believe the Texas Big Star Half Marathon & 5K will be a premier athletic event in the North Texas area that participants will return to year after year,” Tug McGraw Foundation President and CEO Jennifer Brusstar said. “The proceeds raised from the race will go back into the local community to help support other

Jeb Bush is Wrong about Blacks Wanting ‘Free Stuff’ By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush thinks he can become president of the United States if Republicans can double their share of the Black vote in several key states. But he, like his GOP comrades, is demonstrating how not to accomplish that goal. Bush’s latest failure came last week when he continued a longtime Republican tradition of trying to portray African Americans as addicted to welfare and government handouts. He was speaking at the East Cooper Republican Women’s Club annual Shrimp Dinner in Mount Pleasant, S.C. According to the Washington Post, this is what happened: “Look around this room,” a man told Bush, who spoke to a mostly white crowd. “How many black faces do you see? How are you going to include them and get them to vote for you?” asked the man, who was white. “Bush pointed to his record on school choice and said that if Republicans could double their share of the black vote, they would win the swing states of Ohio and Virginia.” Then Bush uttered this clunker: “Our message is one of hope and aspiration. It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting – that says you can achieve earned success.” To paraphrase GOP icon Ronald Reagan, “There you Republicans go again.” In the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee, made an eerily similar remark at a Montana fundraiser. He said, “I want
people to know what I stand for and if I don’t stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that’s just fine. But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy – more free stuff.” Ronald Reagan framed the “free stuff” in the form of welfare. He frequently lamented “welfare queens,” which was a way to indirectly exploit racial anxieties. Yet his son, Michael Reagan, had the temerity to argue two years into the Obama administration “…The past two years have made one thing clear: Ronald Reagan was a far better friend to black Americans than Barack Obama has been.” In fact, as I wrote earlier in this space, Reagan was one of the nation’s worst presidents on civil rights. Among other things, he moved to invalidate voluntary affirmative action programs and school desegregation plans, vetoed the Civil Rights Restoration Act and tried to undermine the independence of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by firing three of its members. Another Republican, Richard M. Nixon, railed against Blacks and Jews in a 1973 taped conversation with his secretary, Rose Mary Woods. Nixon said, “Bill Rogers has got — to his credit it’s a decent feeling — but somewhat sort of a blind spot on the black thing because he’s been in New York,” Nixon said. “He says well, ‘They are coming along, and that after all they are going to strengthen our country in the end because they are strong physically and some of them are smart.’ So forth and so on. “My own view is I think he’s right if you’re talking in terms of 500 years,”
he said. “I think it’s wrong if you’re talking in terms of 50 years. What has to happen is they have to be, frankly, inbred. And, you just, that’s the only thing that’s going to do it, Rose.” In a May 13, 1971 conversation with top aides John D. Ehrlichman and H. R. Haldeman, Nixon said: “We’re going to [put] more of these little Negro bastards on the welfare rolls at $2,400 a family–let people like [New York Sen.] Pat Moynihan … believe in all that crap. But I don’t believe in it. Work, work–throw ’em off the rolls. That’s the key … I have the greatest affection for [blacks], but I know they’re not going to make it for 500 years. They aren’t. You know it, too. The Mexicans are a different cup of tea. They have a heritage. At the present time they steal, they’re dishonest, but they do have some concept of family life. They don’t live like a bunch of dogs, which the Negroes do live like.” It’s not just the anti-Black sentiments expressed in words that are troubling about Republicans – it’s their actions as well. According to the NAACP legislative report card, no Republican in the House or Senate earned a grade above an “F” when voting on issues deemed important to African Americans. That’s far more damaging than the ignorant words that have been spouted for years. We’ll take positive action over “free stuff” any day of the week. George E. DCCCD experts offer advice on surviving the holidays with less stress Family and friends can push the wrong buttons. They know you, and years of therapy can send the most emotionally-stable holiday celebrant into a tailspin. Slow down. Smell the flowers. You don’t have to attend every family event, run to every sale or purchase gifts for everyone who buys for you, human behavior experts say. “The holidays have become an all too familiar hustle and bustle,” said Johnny Castro, a faculty member who specializes in family studies and human development at Brookhaven College. “Take a stance against overdoing and overspending during the holidays. I tell people all the time that less is more.” Castro sees holidays as a great time to see family and friends – but not all during the rush of the season. Sending regrets is not a social blunder. “You can’t make every event, and you shouldn’t,” Castro said. “Avoid the hype. Don’t create an environment of overstimulation.” Children come with their own set of unrealistic expectations. Oftentimes, their toys are not toys but “blow-up-the-budget” electronics, Castro observed. “Take a stance against ‘more is more,’” he said. “It is important to make and stick to a holiday budget
NOVEMBER 20, 2015 because all of those December sales will become bills in January.” In addition to monitoring children, keep tabs on the elderly, Castro said. Check for signs of fatigue and stress in older adults. Sometimes a short walk or a quick nap is in order. For people who are already overspent, overwrought and overindulged, experts suggest a self-imposed “time out” for the entire family, including children. Children are grand manipulators. They know how to get what they want. But parents have the power to set limits, Castro said. “If they have one or two really good gifts, that’s probably enough,” Castro said. “Parents feel the need to want to buy all of these things. A 2year-old getting a phone is probably something you need to hold off on.” Instead, parents should concentrate on a child’s needs. Usually, one or two items are sufficient. “Parents feel validated if they buy something the child really needs,” Castro said. “Children get bored easily. Whatever gift you buy, they end up playing with the box. It’s really easy to get into the trap of buying what’s popular rather than what the child needs or is interested in.” That is just some of the advice from human development specialists at Dallas County Community College District, and they remind us that the holidays can be difficult for people who have lost family members during the year, too. Expecting a perfect holiday is especially trying for those who have lost loved ones, said Steve Carter, who teaches human behavior and psychology at El Centro College.
“Sometimes it’s hard to move completely away from a loss, so embrace the memories and share them,” Carter said. “And know that extended sadness may be a sign of season depression.” Write down a pleasant memory on a piece of colored paper, wrap ribbon around it and share that memory on Thanksgiving or Christmas, he suggested. Seek out professional help during profound periods of sadness. “Don’t suffer in silence,” Carter said. We can focus on other activities as we celebrate the holidays, Carter added. Volunteering is a healthy outlet that can make the holidays special. “If you find yourself lonely, often the most important gift you can give is caring,” Carter said. “Volunteer opportunities abound. Find one that’s meaningful to you, and make helping a tradition. You may find yourself happier after giving your time.” Alcohol should be limited to an acceptable amount because drinking does not make holidays less stressful. Instead, it magnifies problems, Carter said. Here are some of the best coping tips for the holidays offered by experts: n Laugh, because it can carry way stress. n Sing or play music. n Breathe. n Eliminate early morning rush by getting up a few minutes earlier. n Sleep 7 to 8 hours a day. n Eat well-balanced meals. n Hydrate. n Exercise. n Smile, because January will soon be here.

Can I get an Amen? Blackonomics By James Clingman In war, one of the first things the enemy does is destroy his adversary’s ability to communicate within its ranks. Chaos likely ensues if a fighting force cannot communicate internally. Individual soldiers end up doing their own thing, left to their own devices; they make decisions based on their individual situations and in their individual interests. This allows the enemy to come in and pick them off one by one, using false information and propaganda (Tokyo Rose) instilling fear of being captured or killed, or by making the individual feel abandoned and left with no hope of victory. If the ability to communicate is maintained within a fighting force, it strengthens the group and provides confidence, assurance, and cohesion. Considering our penchant for soundbites, 140-character chirps, and listening to great speeches, but not analyzing them and taking appropriate action, communication among Black folks has largely been reduced to little more than noise. And it’s getting worse. Black newspapers used to be our main communication organ, but as the demand for electronic access to news has increased, newspapers have nearly become obsolete in some circles. Books were also a great source of communication because they contain so much knowledge written by scholars, historians, educators, and activists; but now we are so intellectually lazy that books have become passé and just something to brag about having on our bookshelves. Now we rely on Twitter and Face Book for our news. Newspapers, radio, Internet, and television are the four dominant means of communication today. Black people
still own a few hundred newspapers, many of which are struggling from week to week because Black folks do not subscribe nor do Black businesses buy ads to any large degree. Black ownership of radio stations has drastically decreased in the past twenty years. Aside from a couple of great Black owned Internet wire services, “Black oriented” sites are not Black owned; and two of the three longstanding Black magazines, Essence and Ebony, have been reduced to fashion and entertainment, leaving Black Enterprise to carry the load of informing Black folks on economic issues. (I don’t mean to overlook other Black periodicals; I know they are out there getting the word out as best they can.) Now let’s look at television. According to an article on TVNewsCheck.com, written by Doug Halonen, “Racial minorities owned 41 of the U.S.’s 1,386 full-power commercial TV stations in 2013, up 32% from the thirty-one they owned in 2011— but only nine of those stations were owned by African Americans during 2013, down 18% from the 11 they owned two years previously,” according to a study of station ownership released by the FCC. Whites owned 1,070 full-power commercial TV stations in 2013, up 14% from the 935 they owned in 2011. The FCC report also found that “Asians owned 19 full-power TV stations in 2013, up 73% from the 11 they owned in 2011. Hispanics or Latinos owned forty-two full power TV stations in 2013, up 8% from the thirty-nine they owned in 2011.” I guess I could end this article right h er e, b u t w it h o u t ap p licatio n , knowledge and information are without effect. The obvious point here is the necessity for Black people to own more communications outlets in order to control and disseminate pertinent information to Black people. How? Establish syndicates that could
purchase more outlets; form an alliance of affluent and conscious Blacks to purchase communications outlets and produce programs to empower rather than dumb-down Black people. Increase support of Black-owned media and their advertisers by Black consumers; leverage the support of Black readers, listeners, and viewers of Black media by insisting on more than just mindnumbing idiotic portrayals of Black folks. These simple tactics could strengthen our lines of communications. Accessibility, accountability, and acceptability are essential elements to a strong and relevant media presence within Black society. Our current position in that game is untenable and tenuous at best. In light of the fact that we have the financial wherewithal, collectively and individually, to purchase and support media outlets, it is intriguing how we seem to have settled for much less than we need. Most of us understand and even admit we are in a war, behind enemy lines, and fighting for respect and empowerment. That being the case, why are we content with having our lines of communication controlled by others? If we are reluctant to acquire more conscious media outlets, the least we can do is hold those who purport to be “Black media” accountable by refusing to accept the trashy caricatures of Black people and the negative portrayals of Black life that bombard us every day. Without control of communications an army is severely handicapped. We had better get rid of our negative channels of communications, shore up the positive ones, and create more of our own. Jim Clingman, founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce, is the nation's most prolific writer on economic empowerment for Black people. Charters and heavy testing hurt our schools By Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition via George Curry Media
Across the country, parents have been in revolt against high-stakes standardized testing, with kids tested over and over again while creativity is cut out of classroom curricula. Parents — particularly in targeted urban schools from Chicago to Boston — are also marching against the forced closing of neighborhood schools, displacing kids and shutting down needed neighborhood centers. Now there is more and more evidence that the parents have it right — and the deeppocket “reformers” are simply wrong. First, the Obama Administration — which has pushed high-stakes testing as central to its education agenda — announced that kids were being tested too often, with too much school time devoted to preparing for and taking required tests. In what a writer for the New Yorker described as a major “mea culpa,” the administration now recommends that standardized testing be limited to 2 percent of class time. Maybe music, art and creativity will have a chance once more. Second, a report by the Center for Media and Democracy on charter schools — the centerpiece of the socalled reformers’ agenda — reports that some $3.7 billion in
federal money has been larded onto charter schools in the past two decades with virtually no accountability. The result is often a simple rip-off: schools that never open or open for a few months and shut down. Some highly touted cyber charters — schools featuring online courses — are, as Education Week reported, essentially useless, like not going to school at all. Others, like the highly touted New York Success Academy Schools, apparently boost their test scores by identifying lowperforming students who have “got to go” and finding ways to get rid of them. And now the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the gold standard for measuring progress, reports that American kids have lost ground in math, and either were stagnant (4th graders) or worse (8th graders) in reading. Charters are spreading like kudzu; wall-to-wall standardized testing is nearly universal — and the parents are right: It isn’t working. The reality, as National Education Association
President Lily Eskelsen Garcia has pointed out, is that the nations that have outperformed the U.S. in recent years don’t do the things that the deeppockets reformers have been touting. They don’t terrorize teachers; they train, respect and pay them. They don’t set up private charters and drain money from public education; they devote more resources to the poorest students, not less. They don’t do repeated highstakes standardized testing; they evaluate teachers and students carefully, mentor them and improve them. The school “reformers” are hurting, not helping. Closing neighborhood schools too often divorces parents from their students’ schools. Demeaning teachers is leading to higher turnover, when experience is central to becoming a good teacher. Repeated standardized testing takes the joy out of learning, making kids less likely to find their strength. As Jeff Bryant of the Education Opportunity Network writes, parents are driving an “education spring,” revolting against an elite reform agenda that is driving away good teachers, undermining public schools, and draining funds and fun from our public schools. Parents are right to keep the pressure on. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. is founder and president of the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition. You can keep up with his work at www.rainbowpush.org

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. BRINGING THE WORLD TO YOU!

My Life on the Big Screen By Eva D. Coleman I Messenger
Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore took me there. The trying times of best friends wading through life’s battles in the movie Miss You Already brings cancer and all of its ugliness to the surface. Collette’s character Milly is diagnosed with breast cancer. Jess, played by Drew Barrymore, and her partner Jago (Paddy Considine) achieve success with in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The juxtaposition of one friend losing life while the other is giving life is clever and brings all of the emotional turmoil that comes with it. Milly’s husband Kit, played by Dominic Cooper, becomes the unintentional villain. While their first moment together after the diagnosis is filled with laughter, it is definitely not funny. The situation they are facing is obviously uncomfortable for them, and there are moments when hurtful actions prevail...and those moments cannot be relived or taken back. Other scenes prove to be tearjerkers, including when they share the news with their two children. The film graphically displays cancer treatment, surgical scarring, random acts of barfing as well as risky behavior sometimes seen in person’s battling this awful disease. All too familiar. At one point in the film, Jess calls Milly a cancer bully. In other words, “Yes, we hear you and see you, however it doesn’t
give you the right to treat people like crap.” That’s how I define it. Although I had never heard it phrased that way, I felt connected to Jess’s interpretation of her friend’s behavior. Or, do person’s with illnesses of this sort have the right after all? Clearly, we cannot feel what they feel because we’re not going through it. While we can assume they might feel they have nothing to lose, we as loved ones and caregivers possibly lose our sanity. This mental imbalance causes a major rift in Jess and Milly’s friendship. Jess retreats to care for herself and give her unborn child the best chance of survival. Let them live. In the end, the friends are brought back together to celebrate the newness of life. This renewal seems to serve as a cleansing, allowing peace to dwell with the expected outcome. This cancer story is poignant. As I watched, I couldn’t help but reflect on the moment my late
husband and I shared news of his cancer diagnosis with our daughters. I recall the ups and downs of being a caregiver, the sleepless nights, picc line flushings, wound dressings, administration of tube feedings, watching him fade away. The movie has moments where people say and do awkward things. There were times, especially during the bully moments, that I said things to my late husband that I wish I could have taken back . I’ve gotten better about not kicking myself for those things. As I watched Milly on the big screen throw up in a salad bowl on her family’s dinner table, I smiled at the gross memory of my late husband vomiting in the bucket on the table at Mooyah Burger and then rushing to the bathroom to clean it out. It wasn’t funny then, but it’s funny now...all because it was OUR memory. I think back on the time he pulled up with his impulse buy, a shiny new Ford F450 truck. I now realize this was one of his bucket list items. He also had several renovations done to our home. At the time I didn’t understand the rush and was flustered at so much happening so fast. He knew. And as Milly’s wish that she wrote on a street wall, he feared nothing. Some of the last moments we shared weren’t pretty, however I’m thankful for each and every one of them. Miss You Already is not a feel good movie. It’s a feel real movie. If you’re not afraid or ashamed of life, go see it.
