Message to the People... KwanzaaFest is an experience
Chris Scott
Mammogram anyone? How about a flu shot? Or you may want to bring the children out for some family fun with entertainment for all ages and good food. Well, KwanzaaFest is just the place to be.
12 Dear Cornellia
This weekend the excitement begins for the 25th year with two action-packed days.
14
"KwanzaaFest begins with the second annual Beat Obesity 5K Walk and Run," said Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price."Then the doors to the Automobile Building open with the pouring of libations.” In addition to vendors who come from around the country, a big feature is Healthfest. Healthcare professionals from numerous agencies will be in attendance to answer medical questions, perform screenings and administer flu shots to the thousands who are expected to walk through the doors at what Price calls the largest Kwanzaa celebration in the country. Founded in 1991 and focusing on the principles of the African American holiday, Kwanzaa, KwanzaaFest has continued to grow over the years, bringing in a host of speakers, including former U.S. Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders, economist Julianne Malveaux, professor and social commentator Michael Eric Dyson and tv and radio host Tavis Smiley. National talents who have graced the entertainment stage include rappers TI, Paul Wall, songbirds Faith and Alicia Keys and American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. This year's program has entertainment for all ages. "We have something for the entire family," said the commissioner, as he talked about special features of the event that are in line with the seven principles of Kwanzaa. "And it’s all free. If you calculated the benefits for healthcare, I'm talking about over $3,000 in services you can receive. You can almost get your annual checkup at KwanzaaFest.”

Trust Don't Come Round Here Anymore
Sometimes words alone cannot convey meaning and feelings the way we’d like them to. Trust for example. The reference point for my meaning is “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all things acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust is such a complex thing. Have you ever been betrayed by someone in whom you had total trust? Have you been able to totally trust another person since? See how easy misplaced trust puts you in a terribly vulnerable place. It’s uncomfortable. It’s abnormal. It ain’t fun. Yet, in this passage we are instructed to put our trust in the Lord. The question is can you do it? Are you able to put trust in your heart after you experience devastating betrayal? And we’ve all been betrayed in one way or another; either by having our beliefs proven false or maybe your heart has been broken. Every one knows someone who has been crippled by a lover or
spouse gone crazy, or, watched someone stumble up on the truth about a situation that everybody but them knew the real deal. In the real world that kind of stuff hurts. In a real sense, once destroyed, trust ‘don’t’ come round here anymore. But now, wait a minute. Go out and trust in the Lord implicitly. You get my meaning? Extreme caution usually follows crippling betrayal. New relationships are founded largely on mistrust and ‘prove it to me;’ not, blind faith and unconditional trust. Life teaches us that only a fool would allow themselves to be misused again. Therein lies my question about trust and what it means to you. Can you deal with this concept everyday? How much of a struggle are you having trying to trust people who have taught you not to give them the time of day? Do you treat all people this way or just the one(s) who betrayed you? Can you forgive? Can you ever forget? Do you really want to? And what does all of this have to do with God? How are you treating Him in the trust area? “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2. Now exactly, who’s proving what to
whom? Are you requiring God to prove something to you before you trust Him? Are you demanding from God those same things you demand from someone, anyone before you would even consider giving him or her your love? You see it is so easy to succumb to a lifestyle which requires proof before love is given. It’s so easy to demand the impossible from people who are incapable of giving it to you. But how can you base your relationship with God on worldly principles grounded in betrayal and disappointment? Are you requiring God to prove His love to you before you give yours to Him? The key to this trust thing lies deep within each and every one of us. We first have to confront those demons which have plagued us for years. And yes, that means all the pain that goes with them. Then and only then can we begin to even accept the concept of trust and loyalty, total and without equivocation. Because then trust means knowing. Trust means truth. Trust means no matter what, I know that regardless of conditions and circumstances, I am God’s child, made in His image and the recipient of His love.

VirLinda Stanton VirLinda Stanton has performed on stages across the country and around the world, including at the White House Christmas Celebration. This year she is a headliner at the 25th Anniversary KwanzaaFest on December 13, 2015 at Fair Park in Dallas. Best known for her singing and acting in "The Color Purple," "A Cry for Help," and several Walt Disney plays, this Tyler, TX native is no stranger to success. In Tyler, there's a street named in her honor and in February 2016, citizens of Tyler will gather again for her annual VirLinda Stanton Day Festival. Her past performances include: appearing as Church Lady Darlene and Shug Avery (understudy) in Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple national tour; performing before President Barack Obama for the December 23, 2011 Christmas program at The White House; Appearing as Rafikki and Nala in Disney’s stage musical version of The Lion King, singing the hit song, “Circle of Life;” Performing with Roz Ryan (“Amen”) and singer Freda Payne (“Band of Gold”) in Blues in the Night; Playing the Clio in Disney’s Hercules The Musical and providing vocals in Tarzan Vocalist and Toy Story; Performing as the guest soloist and Praise Dancer at the International Women’s Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa; Playing Harriet Tubman in the stage production, A Cry for Help; Singing and acting in E.K. Bonner’s Somebody’s Gotta Go, co-starring acclaimed TV actor and vocalist Countess Vaughn (Kim Parker in “The Parkers” and “Moesha”) and national recording gospel artist Carolyn Traylor. Singing at U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s Annual Prayer Breakfast; Performing the Negro National Anthem at The Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon; Recording with the Washington State Mass Choir; and, opening for iconic artists and personalities such as Dottie Peoples, The Barkays, The Whispers, The Temptations, and Hezekiah Walker. An all-around performer, Ms. Stanton has also been an NFL and NBA cheerleader. “A lot of people said ‘you can’t do this’ and ‘you can’t do that.’ I took all of those ‘can’ts’ and made it ‘I can,’” she said. “I
was a strong believer; I never used the word ‘can’t’ growing up. ‘Can’t’ is not in my vocabulary.” “She was hot, hot, hot…” said Frank Stegal of WOW Entertainment, referring to VirLinda’s performance at Six Flags Over Texas, in the Motown-style Revue, “It’s Alright,” in 2004. “ She sings like an angel; has moves to make the Supremes jealous and is the most Energetic, Dedicated stage performer that a producer could have.” Others agree: “VirLinda Stanton is one of the most dynamic and impactful entertainers I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. Upon learning more about VirLinda, as a performer and as a person, it is obvious that something is really special about this individual,” said show producer and theatrical consultant Ed Whitlow, who worked with VirLinda during the Disney Cruise Line in 2006. “Not only does she prove herself as a tremendous vocalist, but she also sets a mark for greatness that motivates everyone around her to achieve as well.” VirLinda’s television credits include roles in “Under One Roof,” with James Earl Jones, an appearance on TBN’s “Praise the Lord,” and performing with George Clinton on KDFW-TV’s “Good Day.” She has earned special recognition for singing her version of the “National Anthem’s Star Spangled Banner” at numerous NFL, NBA, WNBA and Major League Baseball games. Ms. Stanton grew up in the rural Shady Grove community, right outside Tyler, the home of Earl Campbell, the former NFL superstar and Heisman Trophy winner; and also the home of former “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” co-host Kiki Shepard. Her talents first started developing while singing in her grandmother’s church at age 9. Later on, she was employed at the then-popular yet now defunct KZEY radio station in the mid-1980’s, where even at a young age, she hosted a four-hour gospel music program and was an anchor and reporter for the station’s news department. But in 2011, VirLinda’s upbringing came full circle for her. On Feb. 3, that date was named “VirLinda Stanton Day,”, complete with the Key to the City presented to her by Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass. Additionally, Feb. 16 was proclaimed “VirLinda Stanton Day,” by Mayor Bass and the City of Tyler. Then on Sept. 20, County Road (CR) 310 East & West, off of the main street in Shady Grove, where she grew up, was renamed “VirLinda Lane East & West.” —Gordon Jackson and special contributors

Exoneree Christopher Scott hosts House of Renewed Hope 2015 Holiday Gala & Fundraiser: Believe in Miracles
Funds raised used to investigate innocence claims, educate public on wrongful convictions Dallas County exoneree and former Texan of the Year, Christopher Scott, will host the fourth annual fundraiser for House of Renewed Hope, a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit private investigator agency focused on investigating claims of innocence, educating the public and seeking reforms to address and prevent wrongful convictions. The 2015 Holiday Gala & Fundraiser: Believe in Miracles, will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015, from 7 to 10 p.m. CST at the Richardson Woman’s Club located at 2005 North Cliffe Drive, Richardson, Texas, 75082. Tickets to the semi-formal gala are $35 per person and this year’s event features drinks, appetizers, live music, dancing, karaoke, a silent auction and a raffle. “When I was wrongfully incarcerated, I prayed every day for a miracle to prove my innocence and regain my freedom,” said Christopher Scott, founder and chief executive officer (CEO), House of Renewed Hope. “So when we began planning for this year’s fundraiser, we decided to do a holiday event with a theme centered around miracles. We encourage people to join us for an inspirational and fun-filled evening. What better way to kick off the season of giving than to support an organization whose mission is to help free the innocent?” Christopher Shun Scott was wrongly convicted of capital murder in 1997, sentenced to life in prison and
served nearly 13 years of that sentence before he was proven actually innocent and officially exonerated in 2009 for a crime he did not commit. After his release from prison, in 2011 Mr. Scott founded House of Renewed Hope to assist other individuals who are believed to have been wrongfully convicted and remain incarcerated in Texas. As a result of his commitment to give back to the community and his proactive leadership in the fight against wrongful convictions, he was named 2012 Texan of the Year by the Dallas Morning News. In addition, House of Renewed Hope is the subject of a documentary film called, Freedom Fighters, which is directed by award-winning Stanford University filmmaker Jamie Meltzer and will be featured at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. In addition, Christopher Scott and Johnnie Lindsey, a fellow exoneree and House of Renewed Hope board member, will be featured in the January 2016 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Mr. Scott investigates cases side-by-side with Mr. Lindsey, who served 26 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. They have earned investigator training and work together reviewing the numerous letters they receive from inmates and loved ones of inmates claiming wrongful convictions. Since House of Renewed Hope’s inception in 2011, the non-profit organization has received nearly 300 claims of innocence. Presently, there are three active cases being investigated. Licensed attorneys supervise the exonerees’ work and a voluntary board of directors serves the organization. Funds are needed to help pay for DNA testing, polygraph testing and services, court, consultant, and attorneys’ fees, private investigator training and licensing for exonerees, ongoing education/training costs, travel costs to interview inmates, witnesses and former jurors, and general operations. Sponsors and supporters of this year’s fundraising event include Dorothy and Russell Budd, the University of North Texas, Christopher’s Men’s Wear, Jamie Meltzer (director of Freedom Fighters documentary), Johnnie Lindsey and Exonr8 Landscape & Painting. Cornellia Jones King Law December 19, 1956 - November 27, 2015 Cornellia Jones was initiated into the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., through the Delta Omega Chapter at Bishop College in the Spring of 1976 on April 17. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Cornellia Jones King Law were blessed to know a kind, loving, supportive woman with a cute sense of humor. A devout Christian, Nell, was a true friend, just ask Dr. Harry Robinson! No pretense or phoniness about her. She valued her time, family and friends. And she loved Bishop College and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I met Nell, when I first moved to Dallas over 34 years ago. We naturally bonded as sorors, sisters and friends. She was committed and loving, a family person who was the epitome of a true Delta woman. When I lived alone, Nell suggested that as a young single female, I needed to be with family, her family. In retrospect, I think she wanted me to entertain her son because they had a puppy and I was constantly dashing through the house trying to escape that dog, much to little Cornell’s amusement.
Nell and I carpooled to work and during those daily trips we talked about life, family and the future. She was a nurturer, a real mentor. The consummate professional, Nell was like a superwoman to me. She was beautiful, a stylish dresser, devoted wife and mother. She took care of business at work, at home, in the community and at church. I used to call her Sweet Polly Purebred and Mitchell was her UnderDog, always thinking he could save the day and the two were determined to have me marry an Omega Man. When I moved out of the King household, we remained close. You couldn’t ask for a more loyal friend because she valued honesty and loyalty. I never ever heard her speak maliciously about anyone and she definitely was not a carrier of gossip. Later when she decided to remarry, there was no denying that she was happy and she assured me and the other bridesmaids that we would also be happy because Dennis had a lot of single friends. Imagine the surprise on our faces as each groomsman showed up with his wife or girlfriend in tow. I still remember her laughing at the look on my face. PAGE 14

Last year while visiting my mother at Remarkable Healthcare Nursing Home I stopped in to visit Nell as she rested. The next time I visited, Nell was sitting up and as I talked with her family members suddenly I saw a huge smile form on her face. Her eyes lit up and it was like seeing the Nell from the 1980s. I didn’t know if she recognized me but all I could think about is how beautiful she looked and what a beautiful person she was inside. After that visit, I found myself thinking about her often, wondering if a cure for Alzheimers would be found in time to benefit her. I was thankful she had such a supportive family and I know that it was not easy caring for our loved one. Many share fond memories of Nell. As we celebrate her life, there are some lessons we can learn from this endearing person who was so special, to so many. There are three quotes by another Cornelia — Yolande Cornelia Giovanni— better known as our Soror Nikki Giovanni, sums up the life of Nell:
Nell’s actions commanded respect. And finally Cornelia Nikki Giovanni wrote: “Don’t ever be afraid to come to me and cry…don’t ever hesitate to look me in the eye. Don’t ever be afraid to tell me how you feel. Remember you’re my girl and we gotta keep it real.” Real love, real friendship, real SISTERLY. That was Cornellia Jones King Law.
“I hope I die warmed by the life that I tried to live.” Nell’s warmth is felt by many of us today as we reflect on our personal relationship with her. The other Cornelia also said, “Deal with yourself as an individual, worthy of respect and make everyone else deal with you the same way.” PAGE 15

DCCCD (r) evolution The news (r)evolution: DCCCD student journalists learn more, earn awards The field of journalism is changing, and faculty members in the Dallas County Community College District are inventing ways to put students on the path to become news communicators in a constantly-evolving market.
A new immersive, online media writing course at Richland College – one of those innovative approaches – is both mainstream and cutting edge. The goal is to attract students whose schedules may not allow them to sit for a traditional lecture or writing lab. Fifteen aspiring journalists, broadcasters and bloggers enrolled in Media Writing 2311 this fall for the inaugural semester. The class offers students the same quality instruction as the on-site lecture course, said Erica Edwards, lead journalism faculty member at Richland, who teaches the course. Classwork includes writing assignments, lectures, discussions, readings and quizzes. Students can also watch brief video lectures at times that fit their schedules. “I shoot out an email welcoming them to the course. I have everybody write an introduction, and I write my own introduction to let them know about me,” Edwards said. “I try to respond very quickly with email and also to have video recorded during the lecture.” The course, which will be offered again next spring, is interactive – it’s more than just reading all of the content, she added. Many students work full time and juggle family and jobs, added Edwards, who also serves as advisor for Richland’s award-winning student media department, including the Richland Chronicle. “This course lets students work at their own pace,” she explained. “The challenge is making sure they keep up. You can go back and review a lecture or re-read the notes or the assignments or respond to changes and edits I make. We try to keep them engaged. These concerns aren’t new, but the format definitely is (new).” Journalism is changing with the technology that reporters use. As a result, journalism students are learning a variety of skills, no matter which career path they choose – newspapers, magazines, television, radio or blogs, for example. The basics are the same. The style guide used by the Associated Press as well as digital web writing all are part of solid journalism, and students learn to write for a variety of media and for public relations, too, Edwards said. “It’s a matter of making the students feel connected. The online venue can be very effective,” said Edwards, who is also program coordinator for student media at Richland. “We tell our students: ‘You’re going to write, edit and report. You have to be the full package. If you are a well-rounded, equipped journalist, you will always find a job.’” The gloomy outlook for journalism is distorted, and there are many reasons to study mass communications while keeping pace with the digital shift, said Elizabeth Langton, a journalism instructor at Eastfield College. Students learn to tell stories with videos, words and pictures. The expansion of social media makes them fluent in a constantly-changing audience, Langton said. “We are pushing the newspaper as a digital product,” Langton said. “We’re talking about updating the website and social media and audience engagements.” One of the challenges is reminding students that news takes place every minute of every day, Langton said. “A lot of our readers are young. They don’t read the newspaper. They are digital natives, and we have to cater to that. We have to engage them where they are,” said Langton, who also is advisor for the
school’s newspaper, the Eastfield EtCetera. “It’s a balancing act, and our student reporters are learning that.” Students will remain curious throughout their lifetime and communicate in different forums. DCCCD provides practical training to students interested in all mediums, including TV, radio, online and print. Students leave the program with skills in news writing, sports reporting, photography, graphic and web design, video editing and audio editing. They are learning to talk more, learn more, analyze content and feel capable and prepared. And they are finding success. DCCCD students recently won a number of journalism awards at a conference hosted by the 2015 Texas Community College Journalism Association. TCCJA’s convention met in October in conjunction with the National College Media Convention, which brings together the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and College Media Advisers (CMA). The Eastfield EtCetera was named a finalist for ACP’s prestigious “Pacemaker” award, its top honor. And the top editorial cartooning in CMA’s Pinnacle Awards went to Jonathan Wences from Eastfield, who currently attends the University of Texas at Arlington. He competed against students from two- and four-year colleges across the country, and the same cartoon won an honorable mention from ACP. KDUX Radio, Richland’s student-run station, was named national Two-Year Radio Station of the Year by CMA. The group presented the school with its prestigious “Pinnacle Award.” The Richland College Student Media Group received an ACP Photo Excellence Award in the Feature Photo Pacemaker category. The North Lake College literary magazine, Duck Soup, was a finalist for the ACP Pacemaker award. Grant Ziegler, who is also a writing coach for the North Lake News-Register student newspaper, designed and edited the magazine, said instructor Kathleen Stockmier. The Brookhaven Courier took home 24 honors in photography, non-photo illustration, and layout and design, said Daniel Rodrigue, a journalism teacher at Brookhaven. “I am very proud of the work our editors and staff have accomplished this past year,” Rodrigue said. Early hands-on experience and training in multimedia formats, along with innovative classes and faculty members who are former reporters, will help DCCCD students become tomorrow’s experienced journalists. “Our students are showing confidence,” said Langton from Eastfield. “We’re trying to prepare these students. Some will get an associate degree and move on to a four-year college, and others will move straight to the job market.”

"We hope people join us in celebrating the holidays and spreading cheer by stopping by Great American Cookies.” While children can make Santa's nice list by cleaning their rooms, doing their homework or being kind to their siblings, Santa is also reminding parents that there are some key tasks they too can complete to ensure they won't receive coal in their own stockings this year, including: Have faith that fruitcake is doing its best. DON’T EMAIL IN ALL CAPS. Tell the truth about Santa. He’s real. Be a more patient parent by counting to ten. Thousand. Re-gift cautiously. Give your kids the gift of not singing along to Drake. Murder Cover-Up in Chicago By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist
As more information emerges in connection with Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke's fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald on October 20, 2014, the more it appears that not only was an unjustified murder committed by a person who had sworn to uphold the law, there was a cover-up at every level. Even worse, the cover-up seems to be still in effect today as Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other officials scramble to cover their tracks. Let's start with the videotaped incident itself. Perhaps the most illuminating public account of the shooting thus far was provided by Stephen Patton, head of the city's law department, when he appeared at the City Council's Finance Committee hearing on April 13, 2015. In urging the city to settle the case out of court for $5 million, he noted that Van Dyke, referred to in his testimony as Officer A, was culpable because: McDonald did not pose an immediate threat to Van Dyke; McDonald was walking away from Van Dyke at the time he was fatally shot; None of the other five officers on the scene saw fit to fire their weapons at McDonald, including Van Dyke's partner; No other people were ever placed in danger and The use of deadly force in this case was unwarranted. For the past year, Illinois and federal authorities have supervised a joint grand jury. As proceedings dragged on, Mayor Rahm Emanuel doggedly resisted all calls to release dash-camera video of the shooting. After privately viewing the video, however, city officials acted quickly when attorneys representing the estate of the dead teen approached the mayor's office about reaching
a financial settlement. The city was in deep negotiations with attorneys for McDonald's estate while the mayor was facing a tough reelection fight and eventual run-off with Jesus Garcia. A final deal was struck April 8, a day after Emanuel's re-election. Five days later, the proposed settlement was presented to the Chicago City Council Finance Committee. Relying on the testimony of corporation counsel Patton, the City Council agreed to a $5 million settlement without a lawsuit being filed or members of City Council looking at the incriminating tape. There is little doubt that if the videotape had surfaced during the height of Emanuel's reelection campaign, he would not have won a second term. So, he directed his corporate counsel to fight all efforts to have the tape released. Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, who is up for re-election next year, said City Hall made the decision to withhold the videotape from the public. "They asked us our position in telephone calls - we said it was not our preference to release it, but it was ultimately their decision because of the FOIA," Alvarez spokeswoman Sally Daly told POLITICO. "We're not party to the litigation on the FOIA." But nothing prevented Alverez from releasing the incriminating tape. More than a dozen Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests had been filed seeking release of the tape, but it took a lawsuit by Brandon Smith, a freelance journalist, to compel its disclosure under public records laws. Cook County Judge Franklin Valderrama ruled that the police department could not use an ongoing investigation as a reason to lawfully withhold the video because other law enforcement agencies, not the department itself, were conducting the investigation. The dramatic footage shows McDonald walking away from Van Dyke when the policeman opened fire, striking the teen at least 16 times, including after his motionless body was already sprawled on the ground.
Just before release of the videotape, Alvarez hurriedly did what she could have done all along - she charged Van Dyke independent of the grand jury with first-degree murder. A separate Cook County grand jury has been convened and is expected to formally charge Van Dyke with first-degree murder, which carries a punishment of 20 years to life. Meanwhile, the mayor forced and accepted accepted the resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, citing a loss of public confidence. The mayor has appointed a new police accountability task force to examine the McDonald case and other department issues. One of those issues involves surveillance footage from a nearby Burger King. The manager told Chicago NBC/5 that officers entered the fast food eatery the night of the shooting and when they left, 86 minutes of video appeared to be missing. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has asked the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division to review Chicago's police department's practices, a move Emanuel has labeled as misguided. The mayor said in a statement, "First and foremost, we need answers as to what happened in the Laquan McDonald case, which is why the United States attorney should swiftly conclude his year-long investigation and shed light on what happened that night, and the actions of everyone involved." We already know what happened that fatal night. And we also know that Rahm Emanuel fought every step of the way to keep the video of what happened that night out of public view. Now that he has forced his top cop to resign, citizens should force Emanuel to leave office as well.

Members Must Fix Broken NAACP Blackonomics By James Clingman via George Curry Media Having served the NAACP for 10 years in several capacities, including branch president, and having donated money to its causes, I take no pleasure in writing this exposé. But it is our responsibility to clean up our own organizations. For example, President Cornell Brooks sends missives on a regular basis, asking for money, of course, but also complaining about "voter suppression" by various states. Yet, Brooks and Board Chair Roslyn Brock accept voter suppression in their own ranks in various branches across the country. My grandmother would call that hypocrisy. Accepting dysfunction within our organizations only diminishes our capacity to achieve meaningful economic progress. If all they do are 1,000-mile marches, pledge allegiance to the Democrat Party, and beg for m o n e y, t h e p e r c e p t i o n o f o u r organizations will continue to be that of dependence, irrelevance, and impotence. We will be relegated to an afterthought - a non-threatening group of Black folks who can be bought-off for a pittance. The national NAACP has become a sham and a national disgrace to Black people. President Brooks' latest request states, "...we need to raise at least $300,000 in December to continue our fight for voting rights, justice, and educational and economic opportunity for all." In addition to that request, there are the ongoing solicitations for $30 memberships. Of those $30 local membership fees, $18 goes to the national office, as well as 25 percent of funds raised by local branches from their annual Freedom Fund banquets. Here's the rub: The Columbus Dispatch pointed out two years ago, "The NAACP's most recent filings with the IRS showed the organization ended 2013
with a $5.7 million operating deficit with $36.7 million in expenditures and $30 million in revenue." Yet, according to then-outgoing President Benjamin Todd Jealous, the NAACP doubled its funds from $23 million in 2007 to $46 million in 2012. "In the last five years, we've had double-digit revenue growth, we've spent five years in the black," Jealous told USA Today in September 2013. What happened to all that money? Former President of the Columbus, Ohio branch, Noel Williams, who was also a victim of national NAACP corruption, says, "Today's NAACP represents only the ' e n t i t l e d ' f e w, c o m p r i s i n g representatives of the national board, special contributors, and connected State Conference presidents. Local members suffer victimization by the national NAACP personnel who rake in millions of dollars from corporate America but very little, if any, goes to the local units. Our branches are left to scrimp, beg, borrow or use any means necessary to accomplish our work, many operating on $2,000 or less per month." Williams continued, "The national NAACP is abusive toward its units. The Circuit Court judge in the West Memphis, Arkansas said it best, 'The intervenor (national NAACP) seems to regard itself as a feudal liege, the member branches, in general its fiefdom.' The national NAACP considers itself master and the local members their servants. The animus displayed by the national NAACP towards its units, and even a court of law, is evident in the Arkansas case in which the judge wrote, before issuing a judgment against the national NAACP of $120,000, 'If the court had the least doubt about the utter disdain that its orders are held by the intervenor (national NAACP), the testimony of its principals (national NAACP Staff) has put that doubt to rest.’ "The national NAACP has an
internal cancer that was benign, but now the malignancy has spread to once healthy parts of the organization. Units in Ohio, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida, to name a few, have all been metastasized and now find themselves in the stream of suspended memberships, manipulated elections, character defamation, and a host of other non-judicious offenses." Money and perks are at the root of this cancerous corruption. Roslyn Brock has a milquetoast malleable president in Cornell Brooks, who is just what the doctor ordered for an egotistical self-centered chairman only interested in individual acclaim. In September 2005, Black Enterprise interviewed new NAACP President Bruce Gordon. Speaking about New Orleans, Gordon said, "Most recently there are a lot of concerns about the way African Americans are treated in the French Quarter. I would say in addition to [marching], we should take our dollars elsewhere...That, to me, is a more significant message than a protest because it has an economic impact on the offenders." In March of 2007 the Washington Post, in response to Gordon quitting the NAACP, wrote, "In choosing Gordon, the NAACP veered from its tradition of selecting ministers, politicians, and civil rights figures. Gordon's strong management skills as a former Verizon executive factored into why he was selected to run the 500,000-member NAACP." Gordon would not be micromanaged. Maybe that's why he is no longer president of the NAACP. Members, the NAACP is broken. Hold on to your money, and fix it.

It's Time for Answers in Laquan McDonald Case By Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition via George Curry Media
There will be no justice for Laquan McDonald. He is dead, shot 16 times point blank by a Chicago police officer. Now, after more than a year, after a dashboard camera video was released by judicial order, the police officer who shot him has been charged with murder. But this is only a first step. For Chicago to heal, many unanswered questions and many unmet problems must be addressed. Disciplined, nonviolent protests have demanded answers. Now it is time for action. This is not simply a case of one bad cop. Nine police officers were on the scene, yet not one reported the police violence. Instead, a police union spokesman alleged that McDonald lunged at the police with a knife. That false statement went unchallenged. Why? Witnesses were on the scene. But according to various accounts, the police shooed them away without collecting names and questioning them. Why? The audio from the dashboard camera was indecipherable - as was that of four other dashboard cameras at the scene. According to a district manager, the relevant portion of a video from the security camera of a nearby Burger King went missing after the police were given access to it.
Why? The city fought to conceal the video, contesting Freedom of Information Act lawsuits by independent journalists, by the Wall Street Journal and by the Chicago Tribune. Yet the mayor pushed the City Council to vote a $5 million settlement for the McDonald family before they had even filed a lawsuit. The settlement apparently included an agreement to keep the video secret. Why? The contrast with last summer's Cincinnati case could not be starker. When Samuel DuBose was fatally shot on camera by a University of Cincinnati police officer during a routine traffic stop, the video contradicted the officer's claim that he had been dragged along the street by DuBose's car. The video was released, and the officer was charged with murder and fired in less than two weeks. Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez brought charges only after a court ordered the release of the video, after an investigation taking more than 13 months. Why?
The mayor says this was the act of one bad police officer who will now face a jury of his peers. The tape shows us who did the shooting. But the question is who contributed to what looks inescapably like a concerted cover-up. This can't be business as usual. If Chicago is to heal, the truth must come out. The protests have made three basic and sensible demands. First, appoint an independent special prosecutor to insure a fair prosecution. Second, the federal investigation should probe not only the shooting of Laquan McDonald but also what appears to be the effort to cover it up. Those implicated from top to bottom should be held accountable. Third, we need a new police chief and a new police culture. New leadership and comprehensive reform are vital if trust is to be rebuilt. These are essential and inescapable. Real healing requires even more. We must move from reform to reconstruction. We need a national commission on urban reconstruction. We cannot expect police to provide security in oceans of despair. We need action on housing, schools and jobs. If Chicago is to heal, the police must regain our trust, and the people must regain some hope.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. pressure over her marriage woes and she exploded. Well, the explosion led to her yelling at Porsha and causing a fight. We'll have to watch next week to see what happens. 5. Kim Fields, quickly learned that a leisure yacht ride with the housewives, is never a book and food from your carry on. It's lots of drinks, drama and unpredictable behavior.
By Marquesa LaDawn George Curry Media Columnist
This is what I loved about the Real Housewives this week... 1. The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) - There is a friendly wager on the table between Sheree Whitfield and Kenya Moore to see who will complete their house first. I'm thinking Sheree will win this one; she's almost there. In the same breathe, Kenya is pretty ambitious although she's starting from scratch. It's anybody's game! 2. Cynthia may be giving up on her marriage; she sat down with Kandi to share her frustration. It was a bit surprising to hear Kandi share an alternative: growing old and lonely. Shocking, in part, because Kandi is such an ambitious woman. Also not shocking since the RHOA old ladies gang is composed of her aunts and mom, all who seem lonely and alone. But, I do think there's an in between space when choosing between a bad marriage and growing old alone. 3. A relaxing mini-yacht ride can never be just a relaxing ride for The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA). From the moment the ladies arrived on the yacht, tension was in the air. Kenya noticed her event critic was an uninvited guest joining her and the ladies on this ride. She immediately asked why was she there and was told another housewife invited her. She accepted that response for at least an hour and then attempted to throw her off. Kenya, come on now? 4. Her attempt to throw a guest of one of the guest housewives led to the other housewives trying to figure out who should try to calm Kenya. No one wanted that role. Cynthia was elected by default, since Kenya called her a best friend. But before Cynthia could go and calm Kenya down, she got riled up over nothing. My take, extreme internal
6. Earlier in the episode, we saw Porsha plan a romantic Skype with her man only to be forgotten. She also admitted she wants a husband and daddy now, not understanding that is not a good goal. 7. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH) returned and was a shocker premier episode. The sweetest housewife ever, Yolanda Foster, is being divorced. Yes, the same lady who is sick with Lyme disease. The sad part is she was super wife until she got sick and now that she can no longer fulfill that role, she's been kicked to the curb. I truly believe what goes around comes around. 8. Also, another shocker in RHOBH land... although you are critically ill, you cannot go anywhere without makeup in Beverly Hills, or you've committed a crime. Talk about understanding what's important. With friends like these, who needs enemies. 9. I look forward to seeing how this new season folds out, welcome back ladies. 10. The Real Housewives of Orange County (RHOC) refuses to go away. Vicki's ex told his side so she had to tell her side and overall, she was a victim again. It's interesting to see her cast mates refusing to film with her and RHOC fans refusing to watch her.
