City to name Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge By Dorothy Gentry Contributing Editor Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings met former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk 30 years ago and realized something important right away. “Thirty years ago I met Ron and I realized right then that he was a special leader, and more importantly, a special man. His humanity, his desire to be the glue between people… was just marvelous,” Mayor Rawlings told the Dallas City Council and those gathered in the Council Chambers.

citing on-going tensions over the future of the Trinity River Parkway and Park. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson said he was “proud and honored” to rename the bridge in Kirk’s honor. “He is not afraid to take risks and is a great consensus builder.”

Only council members Philip Kingston, Scott Griggs and Mark Clayton voted against the proposal

“I drive the bridge at least five times a day and there are always a lot of people there, all the time,” she said. “Ron Kirk is a people person and no one deserves to have this bridge named after him more than Ron.” Also speaking in support of the renaming was the Rev. Zan Holmes, Pastor Emeritus at St. Luke and a long-time friend, confidante and supporter of Kirk.

“All across the world people know Ron Kirk and this is one of the proudest moments I have as mayor when I push the button and say yes to this motion,” he said. “This is what Dallas is about and we make our city better today by taking that vote.” And with that the Dallas City Council voted 11-3 to name the Lamar-McKinney Bridge (also known as the Continental Avenue Bridge) the Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge in honor of the former Dallas Assistant City Attorney, Texas Secretary of State, Mayor, and United States Trade Representative under President Barack Obama.

a pedestrian park. According to reports, a $10 million anonymous donation was given in honor of Mary McDermott Cook, the daughter of Margaret McDermott, for whom the bridge being built over Interstate 30 is named. The bridge was to be named for Cook but she proposed Kirk.

Former Dallas City Councilman Chris Luna, who served on the council with Kirk and spoke in support of the renaming said with humor, “If we name this after Ron, I can now say I run circles around Ron Kirk.” Millions of dollars have been raised by the Trinity Trust for Trinity River related projects and to change the Continental Avenue Bridge into

“I remember someone said bridges are walls that have been turned sideways, thereby enabling us to cross over the walls that separate us so we can come home to each other,” Rev. Holmes told the council. “It was a bridge moment, when walls were turned sideways, when we elected Ron Kirk as the first African American mayor of this city.” When informed of the vote, a humble Kirk smiled and expressed thanks. Meanwhile, all over social media sites, supporters praised the vote and Kirk.

Martinez, a “Dancing With the Stars” winner and “General Hospital” alum, will discuss overcoming obstacles, something he has inspired countless people around the world to do. In March 2003, Martinez was deployed to Iraq; on April 5, he was driving a Humvee in Karbala when his left front tire hit a roadside bomb. The three other soldiers in the Humvee were ejected from the burning vehicle, but Martinez was trapped inside. He suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34 percent of his body, but fought to recover and has since used his inspiring story to motivate army veterans and the burn-survivor community, as well as change the way America views disabilities. Martinez travels the world spreading his message of resilience and optimism; in addition, he can currently be seen costarring on the syndicated action series “SAF3.” Dani Shapiro, a best-selling author. Promises are never frivolous Spiritually Speaking

by James A. Washington

I think I only once spoke on covenant. In man’s words, it’s a promise. It God’s Word, it’s a whole different story. Covenant is a word I definitely understand. However, its biblical significance is so dynamic that for most of us, it’s a stretch to grasp the concept of God establishing a “covenant with His people” and realizing that means you. When all is said and done, this covenant thing is an agreement, a promise between us and God. If you’ve lived at all, then you’ve had people make promises to you that 1.) they had no intention of keeping, 2.) they failed miserably while trying to keep them or 3.) they didn’t care whether they kept a promise to you or not. You may have even been more of a promise breaker than a promise keeper. For now, let’s keep

the focus on God here. I’ve got to believe that if anybody is going to keep His Word, it’s God. Therefore this covenant, the one God made to Abraham, the one which Jesus came to fulfill, is the one we should take to our graves. Because this apparently is a good example of how important it is to keep one’s promises, I submit to you that we should all be extremely careful about making them. It seems that the basis of spiritual belief is rooted in a simple promise. To Noah, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you green plants, I now give you everything.” Genesis (:3. To Abraham, “As for me, this is my covenant with you….you will be the father of many nations…I will make nations of you and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come, to be your God.” Genesis 17:2-8. To Moses, “Now if you

obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation…” Exodus 19:5. From Jesus to the disciples, “This cup is the new

“SO SHALL MY WORD BE THAT GOES FORTH OUT OF MY MOUTH…” ISAIAH 55:11.

talk? Many of us have heard and said the phrase, “Speak it into existence” and “Be careful what you ask for.” Because of its biblical roots, this covenant thing is a powerful truth to wrap your brain around. A promise is Godly. It has to be. The first promise was made to Adam and Eve. Everything somehow gets caught up in words and the understanding of words; God’s Word, our words, words! They have incredible power, if only we could understand them in the context of covenant. They are our vehicles for communicating with the original covenant maker. I am therefor accountable to a higher power for everything I say. And guess what? So are you. “So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth…” Isaiah 55:11. If God can be counted on to keep His Word and I am made in His image, then honesty is the stuff my promises are made of. Remember that when you make your next promise.

covenant in my blood… for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:25-26. Wow! Remember this is God talking about His promise to us. Have you made any promises to Him lately, to yourself about Him, to anybody you love or to someone who loves you? Have you kept those promises? Are May God bless and you a covenant keeper or keep you always… a covenant breaker? Can you count on yourself to speak the truth? Do you believe you when you

Quit Bitchin’ and Moanin’! Quit Playin’

by Vincent Hall

If Tyler Perry’s character “Madea” is emblematic of the “angry Black woman,” then Donald Trump is her White male counterpart. Both are mega-rich, niche entertainers who maintain a firm grip on their brand and command audiences that are rarely integrated. Incidentally, Tyler and the Donald also both have wide hips and look a little girlish from the waist down. While America is looking at Trump’s relatively small hands, check out how he wears that jacket to hide his apple bottom. Anyway… It’s no stretch to predict that the story of 2016 will be the tale of the angry White male. In fact, I’ve called Bernie Sanders supporters; “The other angry White men.” You know like pork; the other white meat alternative to chicken? Both Trump and Sand-

ers are political party parvenus; both are mad and both spew hate. To use the lyrics of balladeer Traci Chapman, they’re both “Talkin’ about a revolution.” Neither is detailed or specific because they can’t afford to tell the whole truth. There’s nowhere to go once you get past their egos. Trump and Sanders have gained a lot of political traction citing the symptoms of America’s economic anemia, but no remedies. They talk about the need for a wealth transfusion without telling you that some bloodletting will be required. The revolution America needs is nothing new, it’s actually quite old. If the working class want to fix income inequality and bring jobs back they must return to our proven past wisdom. America has got to go back to “Big Labor.” Yeah I said it… we need labor unions in a major way. Let’s revisit a Huffington Post article from 2013. “A report from the Center for American Progress notes that as middle-class incomes have steadily fallen, so have union mem-

bership rates. The middle 60 percent of households earned 53.2 percent of national income in 1968. That number has fallen to just 45.7 percent. During that same period, nationwide union membership fell from 28.3 percent to a record-low 11.3 percent of all workers.” Many of you, who despise my opinions, chide me and call me simpleminded, so let me see if I can simplify what’s happening to the American worker. Simply put, American workers enter an economic c o u r t room daily where the boss/owner has a legal team and they don’t even have a paralegal. Or, your neighbor has a fence too high for you to see over and you suspect that he throws trash in your back yard with impunity. Or how about this, you have the finest sword money can buy, but you show up to a firefight and an enemy who has tanks, missiles and will go nuclear without warning or provocation. Read the history of organized labor in America. Read the history of A. Philip Randolph and the

Pullman Porters. Read Caesar Chavez, whose principal argument was that farm workers should be benefactors to the guaranteed American right to organize for wages and working conditions. Union workers at the Post Office, among truckers, manufacturers, teachers and so many other professions did much more than protect their own membership. More significantly, labor unions set industry standards that forced most employers to pay a decent rate and bennies just to keep unions out of their shop. And listen up White men, take it from minorities who have hundreds of years of experience; getting mad doesn’t faze America’s powerbrokers. You can get loud and uncivil and you can whine all you want, but revolution requires organizational development and consistency. Big rallies and a Martin Luther King figurehead of your liking does not a movement make. You need an NAACP, a LULAC, and the AFLCIO all rolled into one. Organize, pay some dues and quit that bitching and moaning. Even John Wayne had union representation!!

My sister is not speaking to me!

Dear Alma, We need advice. Recently our mom died and one of our sisters hasn’t spoken to us since. Reason being, my sister wanted mama to be buried in her favorite dress. Let me clarify, I’m not talking about one of my mom’s dresses, I’m talking about a dress that belonged to my sister. I didn’t think much about it at the time, I just thought she was crazy. While my other sisters were dealing with the announcements and program, I went out and bought mama a really nice, new dress to be buried in. I delivered it to the funeral home and with all that we were working on finalizing the funeral, I just forgot to mention it. Or maybe I just didn’t take

her seriously, anyway, she won’t talk to us. She said we disrespected her by burying our mother in a new dress. It’s been three months now and my oldest sister wants us to make up. My take on what’s happening is, “Whatever, she is crazy, so I don’t care!” It really doesn’t bother me one bit that we don’t talk, so I don’t see the problem. If the rest of us get along and only one sister has a problem, that’s her problem to fix. I feel like she will come around when she comes to her senses, because I don’t have time to play into her selfishness. I told you how I feel about it. My sisters and I read your column every week. How do you think we should handle this situation? Do you agree with her or me? Signed, New Dress vs. Old Mess Dear New Dress vs. Old Mess, My condolences on the loss of your mother. It’s really one of the worst experiences of life. The grief never leaves you, ever. Some can handle it and others, well, we (and yes, that means me) start to sink. Pardon me one Mississippi while I ponder, am I the only one who recognizes that your sister’s

last wish regarding her mother wasn’t accepted, or even acknowledged? I mean you guys dismissed it and didn’t take the time to discuss or consider the possibility. Regardless if you agreed or not, she deserved a conversation. If honestly you forgot, apologize. Cause I really don’t think it’s about the dress, do you? It sounds to me like your sister is overwhelmed by grief as I’m sure you all are. So before you pass judgment while taunting her tears, please pause, rewind and identify her pain for what it is. Some folks grieve by retreating. They aboutface towards a path to darkness because they just can’t imagine happiness without their loved one. Don’t misread or criticize her for that. What would warm my heart is to see you and your other siblings rally behind her and

address the issue. Take the time to visit with her and listen. Note I didn’t say talk. Nope, let her do the talking. Give her a chance to introduce you to her heartache. You didn’t before, I think it’s time. Become each other’s anchor. It’s about you all positioning yourselves above the pettiness and putting out this fire that divides you. I don’t have to confirm for you, grieving the death of your mother is one of the most agonizingly, excruciating experiences ever. Check your mouth, don’t let your pain speak for you. You can disagree without being dismissive. Your haughty approach and condescending attitude, Miss Sassy, are just like two flat tires, until you make a change, your family feud of foolishness will remain parked right where it is. Alma
