Celebrating the contributions of Women

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Since 1981, America has recognized March as Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the successes of America’s women throughout our history and the courage and sacrifice of the bold women pioneers who broke down many barriers facing women. The 2016 theme for women’s history month is: “Working to form a more perfect union: Honoring Women in Public Service and government.” This theme encourages us to recognize and honor the countless women who were trailblazers in the formation of our country and the advancement of our democracy. Since America’s founding, women have been active participants in our nation’s government. Even as they fought for representation and the right to vote, women served in roles that shaped and molded the fabric of our nation.

Susanna Salter is an example of early champion. She was elected as the first mayor of a US city in 1887, decades before women were granted the right to vote. As the first registered nurse to have ever served in Congress, I stand on the shoulders of many great women who paved the way for me, and for others. They include Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to serve in Congress; Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives, and my personal mentor, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, the first African American elected from the state of Texas to serve in the

House. Each year as we celebrate the achievements of women, I am encouraged and inspired by the strength, the courage, and the passion of these women. Yes women have progressed significantly, but there is much more that needs to be done to ensure gender quality. Although the

very first piece of legislation that President Obama signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, designed to produce a level playing field in the workplace, today women only make seventy-nine cents compared to each dollar that a man makes for the exact same work. While women earn sixty percent of all undergraduate and master’s degree in this country, they only comprise twenty-five percent of all executive level positions and account for less than five percent of the chief executive officers who run Fortune 500 companies. The success of our nation depends on the economic progress and security of women and working families. As Congresswoman Jordan once eloquently stated, “What the people want is very simple--- they want an America as good as its promise.” While representing you in Congress, I will continue to fight for an economic agenda that works for women and their families. Our mothers, our wives, our sisters, and our daughters deserve the very same opportunities as men have in this society. This Women’s History Month, I ask you to join me in celebrating the contributions that America’s women have made to our country and in advocating for new opportunities to provide women with the economic security that they deserve and their families need.

Incredible and inspiring By the Hon. Helen Giddings (D-Dallas)

Rep. Helen Giddings with her mother, Catherine Ferguson.

Throughout my life, I have been privileged to meet and know some incredible and inspiring women. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, I am First Lady Michelle Obama

Oseola McCarty

going to dedicate each remaining day this month to a woman in my life who paved the way for girls and women across the world. I want to start however with a woman who is not a famous politician or celebrity, but who is the most incredible woman I've had the honor of knowing: my mother, Catherine Ferguson. She was my teacher, my inspiration, and my friend, and I continue to follow her wisdom. Without her support and guidance, I would have never become the public figure, the mother, or the person that I am today. I also would have never met these other amazing women, and that is something I will never forget. I am honoring Oseola McCarty, who captured the attention of the world for her

Honorable Baleka Mbete

amazing generosity and selflessness. After a life as a washerwoman, she established a trust that dedicated a significant portion of her life's savings to the University of Southern Missis-sippi to provide scholarships to students in need. Ms. McCarty lived a very modest life, choosing to not invest in herself, but rather the next generation. Her commitment to higher education and philanthropy is a critical lead that we must all follow, and I was honored to sit down with her. Next, I am honoring the first African American First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama has spent her time in the White House exhibiting class, intelligence, and leadership. Her work starting the "Let's Move" initiative has laid out a bold agenda to solve childhood obesity in a generation. In addition, she has worked with Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, to start "Joining Forces", calling on all Americans to rally around service members, veterans, and their families. She has represented our country with grace and humility. I cannot

wait to see what she does next. I am also honoring Baleka Mbete, the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa and Chair of the African National Congress (ANC), the country's current ruling political party. Ms. Mbete began her career as a teacher, but her life quickly became political when her brother was arrested for his involvement in the country's black liberation movement during Apartheid. After his arrest, she left teaching but was quickly arrested as well. During her detention, she received a note from her brother instructing her to go into exile and leave the country. With the help of the political party she would one day lead, she headed to Swaziland and later to Tanzania. Fourteen years after her exile, she returned to South Africa as the first secretary-general of the ANC Women's League and in 2008, she was elected Deputy President. She was unanimously elected Speaker of the National Assembly in 2014. Baleka Mbete went from exiled teacher to arguably the most powerful person in South Africa. Her time in leadership has been focused on equity for women in employment, education, and basic human rights. Ms. Mbete reminds us that bringing about societal change requires fortitude and struggle. I have great admiration for her achievements. Today I conclude with former United States First Lady, Senator,

Honorable HIllary Clinton

and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Secretary Clinton has built a historic career serving children and families in this country. As First Lady of Arkansas, she was a forceful champion of reforming public education in the state. As First Lady of the United States, she was instrumental in passing the Children's Health Insurance Program, which helped cut the uninsured rate for children in half. As a Senator from New York, she helped our nation rebuild after the September 11th attack on our nation. And as Secretary of State, she stood toe to toe with our allies and adversaries as our nation's Chief Diplomat and advocate. Hillary Clinton offered to this generation a notion that girls can do anything that boys can do. She showed that no matter who you are, or who you are married to, you can pave your own identity and your own story. She has shown that women in politics can be tough and respected. As an elected official and as an American, I am eternally grateful for her sacrifice.

Oh Snap! Zemill delivers heavenly PoJazz experience Photos and story By Eva Gray Coleman

MARCH 18, 2016

Yes. He moves the crowd. Zemill’s style is interactive and requires crowd participation. Some get carried away, such as the woman during this particular evening who decided to gyrate in front of the crowd and directly in front of the Clarence Muse Cafe Theater stage. Zemill had incited the audience to “get down” after he instructed his accompanists to play a familiar tune. This woman held nothing back...as so did the artist himself. For Zemill, this show was a little different. While those in attendance swayed, oohed and awed, hanging onto his every word, the day before, Zemill had received word that a dear friend by the name of Sandra Underwood had passed away. Earlier in the week, he had received a word from Sandra.

Zemill shared how Sandra was a big supporter. He even said she had left him a voicemail message the following day about getting her ticket.

He’s become a regularly featured performer at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL). Most recently, he was the headliner during Season 39‘s Poets N Jazz #4 event, featuring an opening performance by

8

Javon Rustin. Having stepped up to many microphones at various venues, Zemill has indulged many in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond with his delivery, which is sometimes erotic, yet always pleasing and definitely up-lifting.

“On Sunday, Sandra called to talk to me about a dream she had,” Zemill recalled. “She said people were getting on a bus and coming to the show, and for some reason, she couldn’t get on the bus.”

It’s Poetry. It’s Jazz. Combined they bring forth pure artistry. It’s E. Arabis Zemill.

PAGE

Sandra died unexpectedly on Thursday from what Zemill was told were complications with stomach issues. (See pg 21) Friday night, Zemill was on fire. The recent premonition he received did not faze his performance. Sandra may have missed the bus in her dream, however, perhaps she was a

driving force behind the intensity of his message. Words are powerful. When breath is gone, it doesn’t necessarily mean words are lost. As an humble and graceful poet, Zemill’s shows are continuously growing in popularity. He sells out theaters of people wanting to hear his words. His Timeless CD, books, shirts and memorabilia are reminders of his poetic existence. Attention Required is the name of the parent company under which Zemill markets his brands. Sandra U n d e r wo o d d e fi n i t e l y g o t h i s attention. Zemill is a voice of entertainment, reality, life’s struggles and the precious gift of love and life. While others hold onto his vocal prowess, he hangs onto Sandra’s voicemail about the ticket she was about to purchase. Perhaps her ticket took her to Heaven. Someone else paid the price. May she rest in peace. Long live The PoJazz Experience.

Demand Your Inheritance Spiritually Speaking…. By James A. Washington

This column is all about not putting limits on a limitless God. In church the sermon was all about how we as finite creatures do a pretty good job of trying to put the infinite being of God into some way, shape or form that we can understand. The problem with that is we can’t do it. Our brain won’t let us comprehend all knowing, all powerful, everywhere since before time began and after it stops. You see these terms all, before, after, presuppose there is a limit to time and space and power and understanding and things. It is the way of a finite being which happens to be us. These are human characteristics and it is how we have come to rationalize life. It begins at birth. It ends at death. But does it? Pastor was teaching that as long as we operate that way, we limit what we think we’re able to do. His point and mine is don’t put man’s limits on God’s promises. You see each one of us has an image of ourselves on the inside of who we are and what we can do. It has been shaped by friends and family, situations and circumstances, what we want and what we have. For many of us that image is in direct conflict with what God sees and knows He has placed within us. Let me put it this way. Would you ask a homeless man for $100? Of course

not! You wouldn’t ask because you wouldn’t believe he had it. So if you do not believe there is greatness in you, dare I say you wouldn’t ask God for it. And there’s the rub. I am now of the opinion, it’s time for all of us to put demands on God. I am not being arrogant or presumptuous. I am trying to be humble, respectful and obedient. God has been saying forever to ask him. As a matter of fact He says, ask, seek, and knock. In each instance your action is promised a positive reaction. Don’t ask. Don’t get. I’m really talking about mustard seed stuff here. Your faith dictates what you ask for. Do you have enough faith to take the limits off God and ask Him; demand from Him the inheritance that is yours as delivered by the finished work of Jesus Christ? I understand this can be tricky stuff. And it’s not easy. We put obstacles in our way when it comes to simply receiving the grace and blessings of God. I’m merely pointing out that we have some say in this. We have a spiritual obligation to not limit God. The solution is to recognize those things we do that are subtle but devastating to our achieving God’s purpose for us. Fear limits God. If you think the answer will be no, you won’t ask. Unbelief limits God. If you don’t believe it’s possible, then all things become impossible. Disobedience limits God. If you disobey, you don’t think you have the right to ask for anything. And comparison limits God. If you feel

unworthy and less than those who have more, you’ll accept what you have and nothing more. How? Why?-by negating a willingness to believe we are truly blessed and highly favored, made in the image of almighty God and destined to be great for Him. You know there is fear of failure and fear of success, both with the same result. I call it the do nothing. It’s comfortable and you can handle that. Who wants to expect everything when the world has taught you that you don’t deserve anything? My proof of what I’m saying is Matthew 4:11. After the devil tempted Jesus with everything in the world and He refused in the name of God. “The devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” In the name of the devil, Jesus was aware enough to say no thank you. And because He knew where His blessings lay, God sent angels to attend Him and in God’s name gave Him everything the devil had promised. Think about that. Are you making any demands on God? He’s just waiting on you to recognize He’s your God, daring you to ask so he can give. Without the question, w i t h o u t t h e d e m a n d , i t ’s a n unfulfilled dream, a mountain too big to move, a desire never met. And this I know. Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the lord, trust in Him and He will do this;” You gotta believe. May God bless and keep you always.

Reel-ality TV Talk By Marquesa LaDawn, George Curry Media Columnist

I LOVE my Housewives, however, their "denial addiction" is getting on my nerves. I'll tell you why: * They never seem to see what the world sees (Vicki G., Real Housewives of OC) * It takes hitting rock bottom before any changes are made (Nene Leakes, Real Housewives of Atlanta) * Everybody else is the problem (Kim Richards, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) * There are no limits to being evil (Kenya Moore, Real Housewives of Atlanta) * They never accept their new reality (Phaedra Parks, Real Housewives of Atlanta) * The elephant in the room is never mentioned (Erica Jayne, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills). And the list continues. I get it that they are human like the rest of us, but at some point, the light bulb should come on! Let's me break this down... Kim Richards... After an embarrassing season on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, showing her falling off the wagon... After, news reports came out about her getting arrested for public intoxication and stealing... After, two stays or so in rehab... After, being on Dr. Phil...

This lady, Kim Richards, seems to be married to denial! During a recent interview with Andy Cohen on WWHL, Kim showed up again: clueless, no growth, no change, claiming it's everybody else's fault. I'm sincerely worried about her, because at some point she'll have to make a decision or it may be made for her. Would you believe, she's now on another reality show? Kenya Moore... OMG...after trying to take down Vivica Fox, Sherry Shepard, Porsha Williams, among others, she's determined to take down Kim Fields. Why? Just because... I get owning the villain role since it's her 100 percent, but once the logic disappears and she's just hurting to hurt, it's too much. Atlanta, premieres it's 3-part reunion next week and looks like Kenya Moore is at it again!! Phaedra Parks

much they hurt her by helping Apollo. First of all, it was Todd who helped this boy, then Phaedra sends the FBI their way and all hell breaks lose. Just when she seemed to renew her friendship with Kandi, Phaedra's evil side showed up. I mean, I get the anger from her husband getting locked up for eight years, but at some point, she will need to stop blaming everyone else. The Elephant in the Room! Why does it seem like every extremely wealthy woman who shows up on the Real Housewives has a big elephant in the room they deal with as a sacrifice? The newest one is, Erica Jayne of RHOBH. It was impressive to see her home, her life, her two faces... and then about three episodes in, it happened: her husband treats her like a 2-yearold. The same thing happened, to RHOC's Megan Edmonds; she's treated like crap by her husband on camera! Oh, yeah, Yolanda Foster, soon to be divorced... Denial, anyone? Bottom line, whether we can relate or not, it's shocking to see the same old bad habits and same old predictable results while still remaining fiercely entertaining.

Ms. Southern (Ain't no Belle) herself, was determined to show Kandi and her husband how

My father...not my business Dear Alma, Frankly, this is not your state of affairs; you have no control here. Why in the world are you trying to make decisions for a 60-yearold man? Whether he’s living long or living wrong, 60 years is enough time for him to follow his own map of directions. Your father can and will decide with whom he wants to share his life. Here’s a news flash: he was making decisions about women and finding his way before you were born, LOL.

My 59-year-old father may have conceived a child with his 28-year-old girlfriend. I say “may” because his girlfriend sleeps around, and everybody in town knows it. My father is raising this child as his own. He asked my siblings and me to accept this baby and his girlfriend in our lives. He wants them invited to family parties, holidays, birthdays, cookouts, etc. I believe that before we welcome this conniving duo into our family, he needs to take a DNA test. How do I suggest this without getting him mad at my sister and me? My brother says it’s not our business.

I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m

concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when I turn 62 next month? A - That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits.com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area.

Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists URBAN JOURNALISM WORKSHOP APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED

The Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists (formerly the DallasF o r t Wo r t h A s s o c i a t i o n o f B l a c k Communicators) will present its annual Urban Journalism Workshop for high school and college students in 2016. This 12-week workshop is open to students in Dallas, Tarrant, Ellis, Collin and Denton counties. Students receive hands-on experience working with seasoned professionals who have gained a reputation l o c a l l y a n d n a t i o n a l l y, a s w e l l a s internationally. The program, which emulates one started by George Curry, Gerald Boyd and other members of the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists in St. Louis, has graduated students who have gone on to anchor newscasts, edit newspapers, open public relations firms and produce radio shows. Mr. Curry visits the Dallas workshop students annually to conduct his “basic training.” Mr. Boyd died of lung cancer in 2006. “We’re excited about continuing the tradition that was started almost 30 years ago,” said Eva Coleman, one of the instructors for the program. “I am looking forward to working with students this year.” Ms. Coleman, who teaches radio and television in Frisco ISD will be overseeing the radio and television segments of the

workshop, pulling together experts in the field. Previous speakers have included: Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, Senator Royce West, Star-Telegram editor and columnist Bob Ray Sanders, Dallas Morning News columnist Norma Adams Wade, Our Texas Publisher General Berry, PR gurus Lyria Howland and Rose Gafford, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Irwin Thompson, K104’s Sam Putney, 97.9’s Gary with the T, Dallas Examiner Publisher Mollie Belt, Producer Haile Gerima and Dallas Weekly Publisher James A. Washington. Ms. Smith, who has been with the program since its inception, took over the directorship in the mid 90s and continued through 2004. Ms. Smith returned to the program as director in 2007. At the conclusion of the workshop, the students will participate in a closing ceremony where they will present a newspaper, television and radio broad-casts, a website and a special project.
