Message to the People... I just love this young lady!

Collissa Dar’Neice Fowler is making Dallas proud! The 19-year-old (she’ll be 20 on October 25) sophomore at Prairie View A&M University is the epitome of grace, social consciousness, respect and academic excellence. A graduate of Wilmer-Hutchins High School, where she was also Miss Wilmer-Hutchins 2013-14, a member of the Wilmer-Hutchins High School Student Council where she graduated in the top 10% of her class, served as committee chair president of the community committee, Top Teens of America Dallas Chapter, NAACP Dallas Chapter, Senior Advisory committee of her senior class and student advisory president of the Student Advisory Committee for Texas State Senator Royce West. The daughter of Claudia D. Fowler, she enjoys working with the youth of her church where she served as assistant director and choreographer of the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church Higher Praise Dance Ministry. In her free time she volunteers with local and national community projects such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, Breaking the Cycle of Silence Domestic Violence Walk, South Dallas AIDS Walk, a feature dancer for the Urban League of Greater Dallas National Black AIDS Day 2012 and 2013 and numerous community clean-ups including partnering with Neiman Marcus for her own historical neighborhood of Joppa. Collissa has received numerous awards and has been recognized by Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway. She has also participated in the S.T.E.M program sponsored by the Urban League of Greater Dallas. The Voices of Democracy essay winner for the Dorie Miller VFW post 1406 of Dallas, Texas, she was also recognized by U.S House Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson of District 30, Texas House of Representative Yvonne Davis of District 111, House Representative Eric Johnson of District 100, and the honorable former Dallas City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis. While she dazzles on the field, she also excels in the classroom. The education major remains focused on academic excellence with a 3.7 grade point average! After college she plans to be a kindergarten teacher as well as a dance instructor for a dance company. She is a life time member of the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church where she is pastored under the leadership of Rev. Vincent L. Collier. Collissa is also a Black Fox! Look for her on the field in the Cotton Bowl at the historic State Fair Classic, featuring the Prairie View A&M University Panthers against the Grambling State University Tigers. She’s short in stature but just like Allen Iverson, she’s going to be a definite show-stopper! And the State Fair Classic is the place to be September 26, 2015 because the Classic is more than a football game, it’s an experience.

Tender Moving at Parkland By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The move would not have been possible if Parkland had not prudently planned it and prepared its staff for every possible contingency that could have arisen.

The transfer of 626 patients from the old Parkland facility to the new Parkland Memorial Hospital located at 5200 Harry Hines Blvd. was a modern-day medical miracle. The administrators and staff of Parkland completed the task safely and efficiently without incident or interruption in patient care. I applaud them for their continued demonstration of excellence as healthcare providers, and as people concerned about the wellbeing of others. The patient transfer began at 7 a.m. on the morning of August 20th and was completed by 8 p.m. that evening, a full day ahead of schedule. New patients continued to be admitted and treated in the new hospital. !

Comprehensive planning for the move began more than a year before it took place. In July of this year, Parkland’s administrators and employees performed a full-scale simulation exercise. Volunteers from the community played the roles of patients. Prior to that time, mock drills were conducted and refined. Every detail was considered. On the day of the move, each patient was accompanied by a group of healthcare professionals who made certain that there were no lapses in necessary and vital medical care as they traveled across the Mike Myers Sky Bridge that connects the old and new facilities. The Rees-Jones Trauma Center, the Emergency Department, the Urgent Care Emergency Department, and the Labor & Delivery services

were available for patients in the new facility beginning on August 20. In fact, the first new baby was delivered on the morning of the move. Parkland, one of the largest public hospitals in the United States, serves approximately one million patients each year. The new 2.1 million square foot facility includes 862 private patient rooms, and will continue to serve residents of Dallas County with standards of excellence. Residents of Dallas County and North Texas have access to a world-class public medical facility that is dedicated to their well-being. I am very proud to have played a role in helping to bring about the new Parkland for residents of the Dallas area who deserve the very best healthcare treatment in a state of the art medical facility. We all should take pride in the New Parkland, a medical jewel in the heart of District 30.

In every phase of his life – as a championship player with the Dallas Cowboys, a business owner and leader in airport concessions, or a philanthropic giant in the community – he acted with class, energy and unwavering passion. Although we were saddened by Jethro’s passing earlier this year, we will carry on his legacy and commitment to this cause in his honor and continue supporting UNCF, which enables more than 60,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they need. We look forward to your dedicated support this year by playing, sponsoring or making a donation. Thank you in advance for your commitment to this incredibly important cause. Sincerely,

We are A Poor Excuse! QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent Hall What I cherish most about this weekly editorial posit is that when something is burdensome for me I can talk it out with you. Sometimes you even listen!! And that’s what I intend to do right now, but don’t worry, it won’t be about poor old me, it’s about our poor old neighbors. Somewhat like the theme song that from the “Beverly Hillbillies”’ I heard that downtown Dallas was the place I ought to be; so I loaded up the truck and I m o v e d t o t h e c i t y. I absolutely love it. Living downtown puts you in close proximity to everything and makes moving to and from much quicker. I love the urban feel, the diversity of race, class, sexual orientation, age demographics and anything else you can enumerate. So far there’s only one thing that I don’t like about downtown and it has me in poor spirits. I have come to hate myself and us as a community for the way in which we have discarded the poor,

the mentally unstable, and those working poor who are living on the fringes of financial fragility. It’s like looking at the walking dead whose shortcomings are literally written on their faces. What’s worse is that some of you are brutal to them! You want them removed… permanently!! But if you don’t want your children and family to be terrified by homeless panhandlers who work 10-12 hour shifts, shouldn’t you try to reduce homelessness? When Mike Rawlings, the Mayor of Dallas identifies poverty as our greatest nemesis, it should be a signal to all. Most mayors never discuss it. Just as I was about to fill my cistern with crocodile tears, I noticed a magazine article where one of the richest men in the world was decrying wage inequities and the way we treat the poor. A cyber journal called “Upwardly” released parts of an interview with Rupert

Murdoch and this quip just hit me like a ton of bricks. “You expect unequal results in a market economy, very unequal. But you really shouldn’t have an economy with over $50,000 in GDP per person and have lots of people living in poverty who are willing to work. I mean, that does not make sense.” I later found out that “Baron Buffet” actually made a mistake. America’s GDP is

about $54,000 per person. So when you ask yourself where all the money is, you have to do so by thinking of all the people that you know who make far less than $54,000 per year. Money alone is no route to a Utopian society,

but we have got to give people a chance at selfsufficiency and then do for them what they cannot do after all THEIR hard work and initiative is expended. I hear you Christians. “The Bible says if a man won’t work he ought not eat.” But the prevailing thought in my mind comes from to theological giants of whom I have great respect. Dr. Zan Wesley Holmes the pastor of Dallas proper once said that when Jesus proclaimed the poor you would have with you always, he was not sanctioning poverty; it was an indictment on the selfish spirit of mankind. Jesus knew we wouldn’t do any better. Dr. King, lost his life marshaling mankind toward a “War on Poverty” and he spoke a similar prophecy. In his scathing letter to Christians in leadership he declared that; “Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”All of humankind is inextricably tied to the successes or failures of the other. In other words, most of us are either poor or poor in spirit, but may God have mercy on those who are poor both ways!! And I pray that no one interrupts your wonderful day by begging for food and shelter as you text and Facebook at every intersection.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society." !

Spiritually Speaking

Trust Don't Come Round Here Sometimes words alone cannot convey meaning and feelings the way we’d like them to. Trust for example.

from God those same things you demand from someone, anyone before you would even consider giving him or her your love?

Spiritually Speaking By James A. Washington

The reference point for my meaning is “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own u n d e r s t a n d i n g . In a l l t h i n g s acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6.

Trust is such a complex thing. Have you ever been betrayed by someone in whom you had total trust? Have you been able to totally trust another person since? See how easy misplaced tr ust puts you in a terribl y vulnerable place. It’s uncomfortable. It’s abnormal. It ain’t fun. Ye t , i n t h i s p a s s a g e w e a r e instructed to put our trust in the Lord. The question is can you do it? Are you able to put trust in your heart after you experience devastating betrayal? And we’ve all been betrayed in one way or another; either by having our beliefs proven false or maybe your heart has been broken. Every one knows someone who has been crippled by a lover or spouse gone crazy, or, watched someone stumble up on the truth about a situation that everybody but them knew the real deal. In the real world that kind of stuff hurts. In a real sense, once destroyed, trust

!

‘don’t’ come round here anymore. But now, wait a minute. Go out and trust in the Lord implicitly. You get my meaning? Extreme caution usually follows crippling betrayal. Ne w relationships are founded largely on mistrust and ‘prove it to me;’ not, blind faith and unconditional trust. Life teaches us that only a fool would allow themselves to be misused again. Therein lies my question about trust and what it means to you. Can you deal with this concept everyday? How much of a struggle are you having tr ying to trust people who have taught you not to give them the time of day? Do you treat all people this way or just the one(s) who betrayed you? Can you forgive? Can you ever forget? Do you really want to? And what does all of this have to do with God? How are you treating Him in the trust area? “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2. Now exactly, who’s proving what to whom? Are you requiring God to prove something to you before you trust Him? Are you demanding

Yo u s e e i t i s s o e a s y to succumb to a lifestyle which requires proof before love is given. It ’s s o e a s y t o d e m a n d t h e impossible from people who are incapable of giving it to you. But how can you base your relationship with God on worldly principles grounded in betrayal and disappointment? Are you requiring God to prove His love to you before you give yours to Him? The key to this trust thing lies deep within each and every one of us. We first have to confront those demons which have plagued us for years. And yes, that means all the pain that goes with them. Then and only then can we begin to even accept the concept of trust and loyalty, total and without equivocation. Because then trust means knowing. Trust means truth. Trust means no matter what, I know that regardless of conditions and circumstances, I am God’s child, made in His image and the recipient of His love. May God bless and keep you always.

Ask Pam Question: I’ve been on Medicaid for several months and drawing SSI from Social Security Administration (SSA). I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when I turn 62 next month? Answer: That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits.com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area. Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
