Talking trade with Commerce Secretary
Stressing the importance of trade in the creation of jobs, U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Ber nice Johnson (D-TX) recently hosted another edition of the quarterly “Eddie Bernice Johnson Business Roundtable” series, featuring the current U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker. Congresswoman Johnson hosts these infor mational roundtable meetings that connect small and large business owners in North Texas with officials from various federal agencies with the goal of creating lasting business relationships and increasing awareness of federal programs, grants, and services that support businesses and business owners. This roundtable meeting was attended by Mayor Mike Rawlings and local Dallas business leaders, including executives from Mary Kay, Texas Instruments, AT&T, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and several o t h e r l o c a l a n d Te x a s - b a s e d companies. During the discussion, Secretary Pritzker shared valuable insight into the programs and opportunities put

A large portion of the discussion focused o n t h e b e n e fi t s o f t r a d e a n d globalization for local businesses and job markets. “Representative Johnson has been a great friend to the administration as a member of Congress,” said Secretary Pritzker. “We will continue to work diligently with Congresswoman Johnson to ensure that our trade policies work for our country and its citizen.” Pointing out that trade votes are “always difficult,” the Secretary said it important that there be a grassroots effort in support of trade agreements. She listened intently as issues such as cross border data flow, service trade, incentives for service c o m p a n i e s, e n c o u r a g i n g s m a l l business exporters and gaining work visas, were broached by attendees. Pointing out that there is a “rigorous environment “against
trade,” the Congresswoman said trade creates jobs. Since 2010, she added, the enviroment has changed with a new energy that is anti-trade. C o n g r e s s w o m a n Jo h n s o n highlighted the opportunities that globalization and fair trade would bring to Texas. She concluded the meeting by stating: “it is important to me that business owners in North Texas have the opportunity to benefit from free and fair trade and to become true benefactors from this emerging global economy,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Trade creates jobs. International trade is a major engine, of not only America’s economy, but of the Texas economy. It is imperative that we take the necessary steps to balance the playing field by establishing rules to enhance fairness without geographical limitations, encourage innovation and improve consumer value in the global commerce ecosystem.”

DALLAS DISTRICT JUDGE ANNOUNCES SPRING 2016CITIZENS’ CIVIL ACADEMY Judge Staci Williams, Presiding Judge of the 101st District Court, announces the Spring 2016 dates for her free and non-partisan judicial outreach program, the Citizens’ Civil Academy. The purpose of the Citizens’ Civil Academy is to teach citizens about the civil court process and the inner workings of the George Allen, Sr., Courts Building. Judge Williams notes, “[P]eople know about the criminal courts. The news, almost daily, highlights cases involving murder, assault, drugs or animal cruelty. Few people can tell you about the civil court process and rarely are there continuous news stories about civil cases.” In Dallas County, a civil district court may hear cases involving contracts, business disputes, motor vehicle accidents, personal injury, property damage, wrongful death, workers’ compensation appeals, and eminent domain and condemnation. At the Citizens’ Civil Academy, participants will: learn what happens to case from the time it is filed until the time it is disposed; find out about available legal resources; participate in a mock “voir dire” (jury selection); and, win prizes while playing Court BINGO;
Mr. Greg Jones, Outreach Director of the West Dallas Community Church, commented, “ [W]e are excited to be hosting the Spring 2016 Citizens’ Civil Academy. We need to learn about the court system and how it works, from insiders.” Experienced trial attorneys William M. Toles, a partner at Fee, Smith, Sharp & Vitullo and Spencer Browne, a partner at Reyes, Browne, Reilly, will conduct a mock “voir dire” (jury selection) so that
participants will understand what happens when a citizen is called for jury duty and how individuals are selected to sit as a juror on a particular case. The following civil judges will participate in a panel discussion: Judge Dale Tillery, 134th District Court; Judge Cheryl Lee Shannon, 305th Juvenile District Court; Judge Margaret Jones-Johnson , Dallas County Probate Court #3; and, Judge Sarah Martinez, Justice of the Peace, Court 5-1. The Spring 2016 Citizens’ Civil Academy will be held on three consecutive Saturday mornings beginning Saturday April 16th, April 23rd and concluding on April 30th , from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the West Dallas Community Church, 2215 Canada Drive, Dallas, TX 75212. Register to attend the Citizens’ Civil Academy online at www.ccadallas.com or by calling 214.509.6229. The Citizens’ Civil Academy is open primarily to residents of Dallas County (Cities of Addison, Balch Springs, Carrollton, Cedar Hill, Cockrell Hill, Combine, Coppell, Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville, Farmers Branch, Ferris, Garland, Glenn Heights, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Highland Park, Hutchins, Irving, Lancaster, Lewisville, Mesquite, Ovilla, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse, Seagoville, Sunnyvale, University Park, Wilmer and Wylie). Between Birth and Death? Spiritually Speaking…. By James A. Washington
Have you ever thought about your own obituary? It seems that the inventor of dynamite through some fluke of reporting got to see his in a newspaper and didn’t like what it said about him. This made me contemplate what God might say about mine, but it also gave me pause to think about it myself; the question being, how would I respond to my own obituary? I mean, if you could write your own epitaph, wouldn’t you want it to somehow reflect a life devoted to the Lord? I recently heard on the radio that the greatest enlightenment is to know the Will of the Lord. The greatest achievement is to do the will of the Lord. If you could craft the truth about your life today, to make sure that when people spoke at your funeral, they would speak of your level of service for the Lord, what would you immediately begin to do differently?
In the case of the inventor of dynamite, we now have the Nobel Prize(s) because he didn’t want to be remembered as the inventor of wholesale slaughter. Because he read his own obituary before he actually died, Mr. Nobel was able to do something to p o s i t i v e l y a ff e c t how others might think of him upon his actual death. If they wrote yours today, would it please you? Would it please God? If not, why not? In this instance for me, the thought of death made me consider life, mine. What had I done for the lord, lately, like today, now? Am I doing anything consciously out of love for Him, rather than the fear of consequence by Him? Do I follow rule because I believe in them or because I am afraid of what will happen if I don’t? That’s an even more interesting scenario if you’re talking about God’s rules. Is my obedience to God based solely on fear? Or, looking at it from a different perspective is my obedience based on love? Whatever they say in my obituary, undoubtedly me and God will know the truth.
And if the truth be told, we all want to be remembered fondly. I suppose the thing that made me think about this a little longer than I wanted to, was the truth that new life begins at death. The quality of that life might actually be influenced by one’s spiritual obituary. That obituary might best be viewed as a new birth certificate. If you can conceptualize that now, then what might you be able to do that would favorably impact your new life. I just thought it would be a beneficial exercise to commit form today forward, to “wordsmithing” your obituary by living a life according to principles you would be proudest of to show god. You pick yours. I’ll pick mine. We both know we’ll be held accountable at that death new life moment. I believe it would be a great effort, a beautiful thing to be able to influence the dash between your birth dates, your physical one and your spiritual one. You see we have no control over those three points of life and death and life again. But that dash will serve us well for eternity. It will be what comprises your obituary here on earth. So please pay attention and may God bless and keep you always.

Take that you White Racist Right to Carry Bigots! By Thomas Muhammad Yep it was awesome to watch and a very proud moment! I just happened to be cruising down MLK Boulevard and suddenly I was in the middle of the best Black Rage I hadn’t seen in years. And since the bulk of the crowd was assembled in front of Mosque #48, I parked and went to Student Minister Ty r o n e H . Muhammad, t h e leadership there. After he updated me on what was up I immediately took up my post at the bottom of the Mosque driveway, put my fist in the air and got my energetic Black Power shouts going. Meanwhile the mighty Fruit of Islam (FOI) were all over the Mosque property, including its roof protecting the site. Man it was awesome! But seeing the gun toting members of the Bureau of American Islamic Relations (BAIR) run away as hundreds of Black folks in South Dallas attempt to bum rush the small grassy patch where police barricades had set up for their protection was completely “exhilarating” cause this kid hadn’t seen this type of victory since we ran the Ku Klux Klan out of downtown Jasper ,Texas after James Byrd Jr was dragged to death.
The group uses the acronym BAIR as a play on the wellknown popular name of the American Islamic advocacy group called CAIR (the Council on American Islamic Relations. CAIR is the largest Muslim Civil Rights organization in the US with over 35 Chapters, including Canada. BAIR members had become notorious for standing outside Mosques in white suburbs carrying all sorts of nasty looking weapons where a majority of immigrants worshiped causing fear among its members. But last Saturday to the shock of many, the morons decided they would go stand in front of the Nation of Islam Mosque #48 in South Dallas and do the same there. Oops big mistake cause they soon found out that in the Black Hood the real meaning of “Homey Don’t Play That!” BAIR found without a doubt that yes, black folk have guns too and had no problem pulling the trigger to protect their streets. This was truly a “Robert Williams Negroes with Guns” moment or more precise a “Lowndes County Freedom Organization” period which gave birth to the armed 1965 original Black Panther Party. Story has it that after being fired upon by the Ku Klux Klan the Panthers fired back prompting Klan leaders to complain to the County Sharif. Yeah, that too, was a proud moment. A few minutes after arriving and after their barricades were erected, the cowards took one look at the angry crowd approaching and quickly said “uh un outta here!” Damn skippy and there’s more where that came from you white bigots!

Keeping with the theme: Providing Inspiration Nurturing Knowledge, Mr. Hayes provided a history lesson as he talked about the demise of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and encouraged alumni to support their alma maters. Citing issues with numerous HBCUs, as efforts are made to close, merge or marginalize them, Mr. Hayes said that these schools were good enough when they were “all we had” and if it was good enough for you, it should be enough for your children. His message was so appropriate, especially when you consider that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international

Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. The Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA) at the University of Texas at Austin recently unveiled its final report “Health and WellBeing: Texas Statewide Sexual Assault Prevalence Study.” This research project follows up a study completed in 2003 (Survey of Texans: A Focus on Sexual Assault, 2003.) and reveals that a decade later sexual assault is more pervasive in Texas. “ I t ’s a l a r m i n g t h a t t h e prevalence of sexual assault has grown significantly since 2003. As a state it’s imperative that we devote adequate resources to preventing sexual violence and serving survivor needs” says Annette Burrhus-Clay, Executive Director at the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA), “To do otherwise seems both reckless and heartless.” State and local leaders will host a press conference, in conjunction with the Conference
on Crimes Against Women, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel to discuss the implications of the prevalence data for law enforcement, local agencies, hospitals, and the community as a whole. Local leaders will also discuss the work they are doing in the community to support survivors and to prevent sexual violence in the long run. "Our vision is that communities in North Texas are free from sexual violence. While this seems like a monumental task; together we can greatly minimize it," said April Mitchell, Executive Director of Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center (DARCC). Preliminary findings suggest an increase of sexual assault incidences and a decrease in reporting to law enforcement. “Our findings raise i m p o r t a n t questions. Our science to accurately measure sexual assault has evolved and an increase in public awareness over the past decade may mean that people
think differently about their victimization,” said Dr. Noël Busch-Armendariz, the lead investigator and director of the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, “It is clear that we must continue to propel sexual assault onto our conversations at the state and local level. “Our responses should be swift, strategic, and systematic— with targets from prevention to accountability. Those impacted by this crime are our family members, coworkers, students, and our friends—those that we describe here are all Texans.”

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society." MALCOLM X I Messenger 320 South R.L.
