Terry Allen wins NABJ post Washington, D.C. -- The National Association of Black Journalists has a new media-related representative. Longtime NABJ member Terry Allen defeated incumbent Tanzi West Barbour by one vote in a revote, performed after both received the same number of votes during the initial election, which finished on Aug. 3, 2018. "On behalf of the NABJ board, I congratulate Terry Allen on his win," NABJ President Sarah Glover said Monday. "The board looks forward to his enthusiasm and work as the media-related representative. I also thank Tanzi West Barbour for her board service.

NAACP calls for investigation
BALTIMORE, MD.— The nation’s leading civil rights organization is calling for an investigation into recently revealed allegations of federal air-marshals targeting African American passengers. The national office of the NAACP joins the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP Branch in calling for an investigation into these claims. “The targeting of the African American flyers is sickening and utterly unacceptable, said
NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “We are moving forcefully with our partners to issue requests to the Chairman and ranking members of the House Committee on Homeland Security for a complete investigation into these allegations. According to a report from Fox 46 in Charlotte, former air marshal whistleblowers alleged they were “told by a supervisor to target “the Black people when they worked in Orlando, because “they’re the ones who have war-
rants. These whistleblowers also report the use of the “N-word and say they reported this incident to TSA, but no action was ever taken. The NAACP recently ended its travel ban on American Airlines after the airlines responded with company-wide training on racism and implicit bias. The NAACP has called for implicit bias testing for individuals and groups receiving public funding.
OFF AND RUNNING
When the Dallas City Council called for a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, who represented District 4, there was speculation that there would be a few contenders. Well when the August 23, 2018 deadline for candidates to file to run passed, there were well more than a few as the number finally settled at 13.
Brandon J. Vance, Vincent T. Parker, Becky Lewis, Obi E. Igbokwe, Dawn M. Blair, Lester Houston, Jr., Joli Angel Robinson, Corwyn M. Davis, Justina Walford, Donald Washington, Kebran W. Alexander, Keyaira D. Saunders and former District 4 Councilwoman Carolyn King Arnold will be listed on the ballot, in this exact order. Dubbed the “baker’s dozen,
the candidates are expected to bring a boost to the polls and may impact the other elections by bringing out voters that may have been staying away from the polls. The group is expected to participate in the Monday Night Politics Forum, sponsored by the Dallas Examiner, tentatively scheduled for September 10, 2018 on www. dallasexaminer.com. MY TRUTH
By Cheryl Smith
Publisher
An assignment I gave my summer intern was to write a message to the freshman class at her school. As I read over her suggestions, I thought about how the more things change, the more things actually stay the same. There are some ageold lessons that, no matter what century, appear to be worthy of listening to and learning from. My intern wanted incoming freshmen to value themselves and to not “go crazy” just because they may be experiencing freedom for the first time in their lives. She wanted her classmates, especially the females, to avoid sex at all cost because according to her, none of the male students are looking for a relationship. They just want to have a good time. My message to young women going off to college is simple. When young men try to talk to you, be courteous and respectful, but tell them upfront, “It was nice talking with you but please understand, I am here for two things: a de-
I Messenger
College Life gree and a husband!” Now some might say I am telling them to be a gold digger, but that is not the case. That statement alone will send most young men running because many are not looking for anything permanent. Ladies, be mindful however, your actions have to mirror the words coming out of their mouths. You have to stay focused! Unfortunately, just as when I went to college, there are many young men and women who are ill-prepared for the college experience and, had no one to help them. Thanks to shows, however, like the most-recently cancelled The Quad on BET and back in the day “A Different World,” there was a realistic look at some of the issues college students must face. Then too, sometimes we can be hard-headed and end up dealing with issues that we had been forewarned about. Parents have to have candid talks with our children about the college experience.
There’s a whole lot more than math, science and technology. And there is so much more than alcohol, sex and marijuana. Which brings me to my truth. As a freshman at Florida A&M University, I was in love. Sure there were other guys trying to get to know me, but I wasn’t looking twice and he knew that. He was far more advanced than I and so we didn’t last through our freshman year. Looking back, I have to say I was lucky. There were a number of upperclassmen who looked out for me. They gave me advice and probably sent out a few warnings. I did hear the horror stories about occurrences at parties, young ladies spending the night at fraternity houses and some going home for the break and never returning because they were pregnant. My freshman year was traumatic because one of my roommates just had to have her boyfriend in the room
I Messenger with us. I didn’t know what to do because she was a bigtime junior and I was a lowly freshman. Her boyfriend was there when I went to bed and when I left for class in the morning. And to make matters worse, there were two things that were disturbing to me: they had no problem having sex in front of me while I studied, and they would fight almost every night. Their dysfunctional relationship was very new to me. I wasn’t used to men and women fighting and the closest thing I knew of resembling what I glimpsed as I escaped the room in the midst of their sordid acts had to be what I read on the pages of my Harlequin Romances. Eventually I began sleeping on the couch because the panting and huffing and puff-
ing was a bit much. I understand why freshman weren’t supposed to be in those on-campus apartments. This freshman was not ready. AT ALL! Then something happened. It seemed that one of the roommates in the other bedroom wanted her “man” to stay the night also, but the 4th roommate wasn’t having it. So roommate number 3 would bring her “man” out into the dining area to get their thing on. Talk about a dilemma! Where was I to go to get away from the sex? I don’t know what happened to roommate #4 but if I saw her today I would give her a big hug. Many a night I would get up from the couch, and take my pillow and blanket and go into the room with Mary. She was a graduating senior who

was much older. She was 26 to my 18. I kept asking her to encourage the two who wanted to have sex to share a room. Eventually she advocated for me and I was able to have a healthier living environment. Everyone needs an advocate, someone to look out for them during a crucial time. It would have been so easy for me to fall into the same acts as roommate number 2 and we could have had an orgy going on. Instead I refused to go along. Everyone is not that fortunate. Peer pressure is real. My message to upperclass students: become an advocate/mentor to a freshman, or anyone you see going astray. Guide them. Your efforts could be life-altering or life-saving!

TLC FOR YOUNG TEENS By Shonedra Redd Dallas Metro News
With tear-filled eyes, she laid in her hospital bed, holding her two lifeless twin boys due to miscarriage….she lamented, at the tender age of 18, “How did my life end up here?” A high-school graduate with honors, Homecoming Queen of her class, and an avid church-goer, now upon reflection, in her late 30s, she realizes, that more accountability and mentorship could have possibly detoured some of her poor decision-making. This short account or one similar can be told by many women, now older and wiser, but who may express their regrets of not being connected to character building, non-profit organizations such as Treasured Ladies Club(TLC). Founded by Ordained Minister and Corporate/Motivational Speaker June Evans in 1999, TLC, was birthed out of a need for teen girls desiring more conversations regarding dating, sex, and relationships. Initial meetings began at Connally High School in Waco, Texas, when Ms. Evans would drive from Dallas up to three times a week to provide character and leadership development sessions to adolescent girls on campus. After servicing this school for three years, she would then transition her organizational efforts to the DFW Metroplex, collaborating with the Dallas Housing Authority, other non-profit organizations, and local churches and their youth groups. TLC currently has two active chapters in Cedar Hill and Duncanville ISD. This

Treasured Ladies academic year, Ms. Evans plans to develop an additional chapter for young ladies, to meet on the weekends. TLC executes its mission of “effecting change in young girls by renewing their minds and restoring values” in various ways. One avenue is through mentoring...addressing topics that range from decision making skills, healthy relationships, to dating violence and self-defense. The goal of this component is to change “their outlook on life while fostering the female dynamic and special bond that girls must have with one another and adult women in order to be successful.” In addition, Ms. Evans said, “No man is an island. Teens should be open to friendship and diverse friendships. Make sure you are in character development programs that will hold you accountable and responsible and will help build your character.” HIV/AIDS awareness is another
component. Each year, the club orchestrates camp ai g n s … . s e x u a l health amongst domestic violence and dating are issues which time is devoted. “These campaigns bring about community awareness that can also be global awareness,” she explained. The most recent campaign was titled: I’m in Control. This interactive proClub gram empowered young girls 9-12th to say, “YES to their dreams, YES to their goals, and YES to a future WITHOUT HIV/AIDS.” The program concluded, honoring a hero in the fight against HIV/AIDS, while also highlighting the importance of the being tested for STDs and celebrating those students who participated. Corporate tours are fun and engaging activities incorporated into the programming. The pairing of social and educational environments allows the girls to explore career opportunities in various fields to make sound decisions regarding their future. Outings in the past have included: tours at Mary Kay Cosmetics, Mercedes Benz Financial, George W. Bush Presidential Center, and major city tours such as New York City. TLC exposes the young ladies to the arts, fine dining and other ventures they may have never experienced otherwise. Participating in the aforementioned

TLC Participants endeavors not only builds character and accountability but stability for her students. “We meet on a weekly basis, in a group instead of one-on-one,” continued Ms. Evans. “Here we are able to connect, collaborate, and bounce issues off one another. Peer to peer relationships create conversations. We are uniquely different but here for each other.” What’s Next and How Can You Help? Marching into its 20th year, the organization’s participants graduate at 100%, with 99% completing higher education. She said these stats speak to “what mentorship can do.” “It takes dollars to mentor girls. We are doing a fantastic job but would do 100% better if we had more partnerships. I would like to track the success of my students from high school through college, with financial support.” The club is also soliciting volun-
teers who would boost social media presence, website creators, and newsletter writers. Her desire, she said, is to identify volunteers who can work more behind the scenes to make the club more visible. In years to come, she would like to see the organization expand to empower middle and high school girls across the city. TLC plans to continue delivering on its promise of helping teen girls “become socially and financially competent individuals who are prepared for life.” Currently under development, Ms. Evans is building a mother and daughter component to the organization. She said she believes in the importance of bridging this vital relationship before going to college and plans to support a number of mother/daughter team building activities throughout the school year. Unlike the opening vignette where
the young impressionable teen was detached from mentorship and accountability with peers who were dealing with similar issues, Treasured Ladies Club provides opportunities for teen girls to connect and to make more constructive decisions which may alter the trajectory of their lives. Added, Ms. Evans, “It is my belief that girls will give us their best if we give them our best.” And her stance regarding teens is to “love them and lead them to better” or as one of her pastor mentors, Mike Hayes, would say, “Love them where they are and lead them to where they are going.” If you are interested in volunteering or are a parent of a teen girl interested in applying to become a part of the club, visit treasuredladiesclub.org. The website also allows for donations, as the club is raising funds to purchase a 29-passenger bus.

A Tribute to my colleague and neighbor By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
For more than 20 years Senator John McCain and I were residents in the same condominium building in the suburbs of Northern Virginia near Capitol Hill. It was indeed a blessing to be his colleague and neighbor. On the elevator in our building or in the halls of Congress, Senator McCain was a “gentleman legislator” who had a genuine concern for the well-being of others, and for the progress of the world and its people. At the core of Senator McCain’s character was a sense of goodness and grace. During an epic moment during the 2008 presidential campaign, when a supporter charged that his op-
ponent, Senator Barack Obama, was an “Arab,” Senator McCain politely shook his head and said, “No, he is a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues.” His statement was one that would not have been made by most politicians. It required immense courage to compliment an opponent during a heated election. The words he spoke came from the very depths of his soul. In July of last year, having witnessed the necessity of the Affordable Care Act, Senator McCain moved against the wishes of his party and its leadership by voting against an attempt to repeal President Obama’s signature piece of legislation. While he was a member of the Republican Party, Senator McCain worked diligently across
the aisle to pass legislation and create policies for the good of the American people. In the areas of foreign policy, campaign finance reform, human rights, immigration reform and
John Mccain U.S. Senator
others too numerous to mention, he was a passionate and relentless visionary. Senator McCain was uncompromisingly honest. After the 2000 South Carolina Republican primary he apologized for not stating during the
contest that he opposed the flying of the confederate flag above the state house. As a member and as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator McCain helped to mold our nation’s military policies. We are a safer nation, and our world is a better place because of his support of democratic institutions, his values and his selfless service. When I think of my neighbor, who I will miss tremendously, I recall words found in the New Testament which proclaim “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.” Senator John McCain, a lion among us for six decades of national service, went quietly in the night. Yet, his presence will remain with us forever! Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas in the United States House of Representatives.

Sweet revenge – Decline and Fall of Bob McCulloch Just over four years ago, on August 9, 2014, 18-yearold Michael Brown was murdered by police officer Darren Wilson. He was shot six times, and might have survived some of the shots, but was fatally wounded by a bullet in the head. Wilson claimed he shot in self-defense, but Michael Brown was unarmed. Prosecutor Bob McCulloch took his time convening a grand jury and announced in November, three months after Brown’s murder, that the grand jury voted not to indict Wilson. Critics say that McCullough manipulated the grand jury process to protect Darren Wilson. But now he has his comeuppance. The 27-year prosecutor was defeated by Wesley Bell, an African American attorney and member of the Ferguson City Council. Bell seems quite the opposite of the racially biased McCullough, a prosecutor who incarcerated poor African Americans for minor offenses. McCullough and the Ferguson police department were cited by the Department of Justice for unfair practices, and for using substantial traffic fines as revenue generators for the city. Had Wesley Bell been County Prosecutor, it is likely that Darren Wilson would have been held accountable in the murder of Michael Brown. Wesley Bell was endorsed by the Real Justice PAC (https://realjusticepac.org), an exciting new political action committee whose purpose is to “elect prosecutors who will fix our broken criminal justice system.”
The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
It’s a great approach given that “prosecutorial discretion” often determines who will be charged, and for what offenses. Prosecutors are the ones who decide whether to charge someone with a crime or convene a grand jury. They also choose how much bail to ask
races but were able to make essential points about criminal justice reform during their elections. Their opponents were all incumbents who will, perhaps, be motivated by their challengers to make changes in the ways they administer the law. This bottom-up
countability in some instances (although some officers conveniently do not wear their cameras). Having lost the Democratic primary for St. Louis County Prosecutor, Bob McCullough still has a few months left to serve in his term. Hopefully, he will be chastened enough by his loss to curtail his oppressive manner of enforcing the law. Indeed, activists will need to pay attention to these last days of McCullough’s reign. While he has the potential to continue to damage the lives of many individuals, his loss is sweet revenge. Wesley Bell, who has no Republican opponent for November’s race, has the opportunity to model what criminal justice can look like when a progressive leader is making prosecution decisions. Perhaps Wesley Bell’s win will encourage the Real Justice PAC to seek out candidates in other cities – their work, so far, has focused on California, Texas, and the St. Louis race. People of color in many urban areas, however, face injustice when biased prosecutors act on their biases with their “prosecutorial discretion.” Police officers, too, use their prejudices to decide when to charge and when not to. Unconscious bias is a benign word for racism, and it is rife in the criminal justice system. Electing better prosecutors is a first step toward reversing some of this, so I applaud the work of the Real Justice PAC. But there is so much more that must be done before we experience equal justice.
Bob McCulloch and Wesley Bell for, often pressuring indigent defendants into plea deals or holding them in jail for long periods of time if they cannot post bond. The Real Justice PAC website lists nine endorsements for this election cycle. Two, Wesley Bell and Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton, won their elections. Two, Boston attorney Rachel Rollins and San Antonio’s Joe Gonzales, face elections later this year. The other five lost their
approach to criminal justice reform, focusing on prosecutors who have a fair approach to “law and order,” is a logical outgrowth of the Black Lives Matter protests that have followed police killings of Black men. The legacy of the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown has been a focus on police accountability. After Brown was killed, President Obama made $75 million available for local police departments to purchase body cameras, increasing police ac-

PAPILLION is a remake of the 70's movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. It's also based on a book that tells the true store of Henri Charriere aka Papillion and his single-minded plan to escape from a hell hole of a prison called Devil's Island after he receives a life sentence for being falsely accused of murder. While in prison Papillion meets and becomes friends with a convicted counterfeiter names Louis Dega. Dega, who has tucked away a stash of cash (in a place that I won't go into depth about), and

in return for Papillion's protection in prison he finances Charriere's several failed escape attempts. While the two main actors do an adequate job of playing the two lead characters, Charlie Hunnam, who does resemble a young Steve McQueen, and Rami Malek pale in comparison to the two original actors from the1973 film. The depth of the emotions of the two actors just wasn't there for me. The director chose to make a more documentary style film with facts
about the French prison system and it also shows Henri Charriere at the end of the movie as an old man who returns to French Guiana to have his memories published (which in real life became a best seller in France). I was very disappointed with the remake of this movie. I think Hollywood needs to learn that some movies are just better left alone. The movie runs 2 hours and 33 minutes and is rated R. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate PAPILLION a MEDIUM.

Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty brings to life the story of slavery at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. My guest Gayle Jessup White, Monticello’s community engagement officer and a descendant of the Hemings family and a Thomas Jefferson descendant, she stops in at the Dallas Valder Beebe Show studios. Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty with new content, includes a feature on Sally Hemings – one of the most famous African American women in U.S. history. As an enslaved woman at the age of 16, Hemings negotiated with one of the most powerful men in the nation to improve her own condition and achieve freedom for her children. Jefferson fathered at least six children with Hemings, four of whom survived to adulthood. The National Endowment for the Humanities exhibitions grant, Monticello has since expanded the landmark exhibition. The exhibition was organized by Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. share with my audience about this exciting exhibition centered around a woman that I admire, Sally Hemings. GJW: Thank you for the warm welcome. With our partnership with The African American Museum of Dallas and our sponsor the National Endowment for the Humanities, and VisitDallas we announced this exhibition. This exhibition is unique. It tells the story of America through the lives of the enslaved and their descendants. What many people do not know is that Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence and gave
us the words “all men are created equal” also owned 607 people. Men, women and children throughout his life. People do not want to think about slavery. It is American original sin. But a fact it is important that we acknowledge all Americans the good and the bad that occurred in the birth of this nation. It is important that we acknowledge and understand the contributions that the enslaved made to make America the economic power that it was. Four million people were free after the Civil War of 1860 who were working for free. Cotton was the principle export. Cotton built America. Who was picking that cotton? Enslaved people. And the connections were not just in the south. Connection extended to the North, to banks, to industries and to Europe. We must understand this. We must understand this history. We still live the legacies of slavery every day. This is what people will learn in this exhibition Exhibition from September 22-December 31, 2018, featuring items new to the exhibition; Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty at the African American Museum of Dallas. Oliver found guilty of killing honor student, Jordan Edwards
Former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after the guilty verdict rendered this week by a Dallas County Jury. Across the country folks are celebrating the verdict but decrying the sentence, saying Mr. Oliver should have received a longer term. Hearing that he could be out in 7 1/2 years critics took to social media expressing
their frustration. Found guilty of murder for the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, the former officer was fired from the police department following the April 2017 shooting where he shot into a car carrying five teens as they left a party. After respectful, enlightening testimonies from the young men who told of the horrific unfolding of events,
the youth were praised for standing firm as they truthfully answered questions from the defense and prosecution. Jurors deliberated for 13 hours before finding Mr. Oliver guilty of murder. They found him not guilty of two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a public servant. There is also already talk of an appeal.

Do you know this man?
POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.
HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST
He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
