HALL: Trump’s Coon Platoon Quit Playin’

by Vincent L. Hall As if racism and oppression were not enough, Black folk also have a history of bearing the weight of those who look like “Brothers” while acting like the others. That’s right… its good ‘ol Uncle Tom. And whether it is the Occasional Oreo, the Borderline Bootlicker, or the accommodating Afro-Saxon, they all represent a treasonous threat to our liberation. The most recent example is Donald Trump’s Coon Platoon. These blatant opportunists suffer little persecution or penalty for their sins. They walk among us proudly. These political parvenus flaunt their newfound riches, while maintaining their rightful place in Massa Donald’s house. By November 9th, there will be no further use for them. Even “Good Niggres” have a limited shelf life. In days past, Coon’s were at least bearable. Renegade Negroes like U.S. Rep. Alan West whose well pronounced self-hatred was fodder for Conservatives from the coasts of California to the mansions of Maine. And then there was Super Tom, aka, Armstrong

Williams. He was a mainstay of Conservative talk shows, as well as one of “Uncle Cholly’s” favorite columnists. Armstrong stumbles over polysyllabic words, akin to Trump’s tweeting lackey, “Passa” Mark Burns. Burns’ verbs and nouns engage in eternal conflict. Armstrong was a handpicked Ninny too, but even he is smart enough to keep Trump at arm’s length these days. The near-sighted, green contact wearing Burns is an unabashed water boy for

gro, but it’s still legal and cost effective to rent or lease one. Trump dropped some crumbs and these pigeons flock to his every move. According to Lawrence Ross’s August piece in The Root; “Donald Trump’s Factory of Ignorant Black Surrogates”, the list is longer than I realized. The “wrong” Reverend Darrell Scott, whom TV One’s Roland Martin made an absolute fool of during a May interview is part of the Coon Platoon. Failed actress Stacey Dash, Dallas’ Ka-

Trumpism and disrespects the legacy of the Black pulpit. Not only is Burns semi-literate, but obviously brain dead given the fact that he published lies about his education and claimed a fraternity that he never joined. Hey Rev! That’s why they call it the World Wide Web!! The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, but Trump is coy enough to read between the lines. You can’t buy or sell a Ne-

trina Pierson and Sean P. Jackson made the list. Jackson who heads up Florida’s Black GOP Caucus complained that he was “forcibly removed from one of Trump’s clan meetings is also among Trump’s enlisted ethnic imbecile infantry. Trump’s Coon Platoon however, is incomplete without its leader, Omarosa Manigault. Unlike the other “One trick ponies” in Trump’s employ, Omarosa actually has a brain and

had a respectable following before signing on to do tricks and triage for the Trump campaign. Manigault is an HBCU alum, a television star, an ordained minister and worked with the Clinton administration. The word is that she was a scheduling correspondent for VP Al Gore although she, like Burns “broadened” the role. Omarosa claims she was “Deputy Associate Director of Presidential Personnel.” Hmmm! If pounding Trump’s protégés with a plethora of pejoratives is offensive to you…then good. That’s exactly the way Obama supporters have felt since Trump announced his candidacy. Hopefully the smears and verbal venom take hold. One of the reasons Trump’s Coon Platoon is so roundly despised is because Blacks hate Donald Trump for his racist, five year “Birther” campaign. Trump’s idea to “Make America Great again”, sounds a lot like making South Africa’s Apartheid system legal again. Show us your papers Negro or suffer the consequences. Trump’s Negroes need to quit playin’. They too have a responsibility to Black children, and to the 91% of the world that is non-white, and none too happy with Trumpism and America’s hypocrisy. The Alt-Right is more of the same for us, but Trump’s Coon Platoon is just downright insufferable. #FriendsdontletFriendsVoteTrump!

Prairie View, GSU Alumni, fans impact economy

By J. T. Stewart Staffwriter

This year’s theme is, “Winner Takes All.” When Prairie View A&M University Panthers takes to the gridiron against the Grambling State University Tigers on October 1, 2016, at 4:00p.m.; organizers are hoping that the numbers will at least match the ones that landed the Southwest Airlines State Classic into the top 5 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Classics for 2015. Boasting an attendance of 51,328, the game, held at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park came in third behind the Bayou Classic, pitting Southern University against Grambling in the Mercedes-Benz Super Dome in New Orleans, with 62,507 fans. Topping the list was the Magic City Classic, the perennial leader with 63,874 fans in Legion Field in Birmingham to see Alabama State and Alabama A&M battle. Rounding out the top 5 are the Southern Heritage Classic with 48,385 fans in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis TN, for the battle between Tennessee and Jackson State Universities and the Florida Classic with 45,728 in Orlando’s Citrus Bowl Stadium for the annual battle between Bethune Cookman and Florida A&M Universities. The two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teams don’t get a break coming into the Cotton Bowl. Grambling faces powerhouse Alcorn State on September 24 with hopes of bringing a 3-1 record into Texas. The Tigers season began on September 3 against Virginia University, followed by the University of Arizona on September 10 and Jackson State University on September 17. Prairie View opened its season with the Labor Day Classic against Texas Southern on September 4, followed by an overwhelming loss to Texas A&M on September 10 and a victory over Alabama A&M on September 17. PV is looking for a victory on September 24 against Mississippi Valley State. A victory would have them entering the Cotton Bowl with a 3-1 record also. Prairie View Head Coach Willie Simmons, a native of Quincy, Fla., was hired in 2014 becoming the school’s 32nd head coach. Simmons earned a degree in Sports Marketing from Clemson in 2002. He was the fastest football player to graduate at Clemson, accomplishing the milestone in three years. He came to Prairie View A&M after an impressive three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, winning the 2014 SWAC and SBN

Black College National Championships. Grambling Head Coach Broderick Fobbs had an impressive 9-3 record last year leading into his third season at his alma mater also touting a Toyota SWAC Championship. A 1997 graduate of Grambling, he played under the legendary coach Eddie Robinson According to numerous reports, the State Fair Classic’s estimated economic impact exceeds $10 million, something Dallas City officials are pleased about. While thousands flock to town for the game, they admit there’s so much more to the weekend of events than the football game or the battle of the bands between two of the

best marching bands in the country. HBCU football games, especially the Classics or Homecoming, are considered to be an experience that includes reunions, fashion shows, pep rallies, high school battle of the bands, golf tournaments, cookouts, comedy shows, concerts, day-long parties that seem to never stop, vendor fairs, parades and tailgate parties. Attendees pack shopping malls for their various outfits, some changing four and five times daily and local restaurants usually have a steady stream of customers. The sidelines are a show of its own. Sure the teams are along the sidelines but there’s so much more as a who’s who of celebrities and elected officials also spend the day at the game. It’s also the place where those running for office feel it’s a good place to show up seeking votes. There’s no telling who will show up at this year’s classic, but the confirmed line-up includes a pregame concert featuring singing sensation Jazmine Sullivan. Paul. Enough Said

Spiritually Speaking By James A. Washington

SEPTEMBER 23, 2016

favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide. It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted and influenced so many in the world then, and also in the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one encounter with Christ. That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live. It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power. I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow.

If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way. Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you. It, your faith, also sets you up and apart to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior. I guess what I’m really saying is when the going gets extremely tough, check the human being Paul. Like Christ, he’s been through and has experienced the worst that life has to offer. But because of his belief system, he’s experienced the best of God’s promises. It’s like a refresher course and I just wanted to let you know where I go during difficult times. You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out. Have you ever wondered why those who have been through so much are able to stand and witness mightily for Christ? Reexamine the reality of God’s grace and you just might get your answer. May God bless and keep you always.

I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork. Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding. Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history. Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Sound familiar? See World today… Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ. Jakes tackles headlines in new Talk Show

By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

The struggles of an interracial marriage, families divided by race, religion and politics and the conversion of one Jewish woman to Islam are all upcoming segments that will be featured on Bishop T.D. Jakes’ new talk show which premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Monday, September 19 and is scheduled to air Monday through Friday. Jakes, one of the most influential pastors in America today, who has written books, music, plays and movies, said that his show could even provide discussion on topics like the Black Lives Matter Movement and controversial subjects like the National Anthem protest by Colin Kaepernick and the rape trial of comedy superstar Bill Cosby. “When we can get them, we’re not shying away. We will do stories that are in the headlines,” said Jakes, 59, the senior pastor of the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas and the author of the New York Times’ bestselling books, “Instinct,” and “Destiny.” “I think there is a great need in our country right now for something that is uplifting and that builds bridges and causes people to rethink themselves,” Jakes said. “Much of what we see on television doesn’t accomplish that. I’m hoping to bring the kind of conversation to America that’s informative and inspirational and still entertaining,” he said. Because he’s well-known in the pulpit doesn’t mean he’ll be preaching on the talk show, Jakes said, noting that he can reserve sermons for Sundays. “That’s not all

of who I am,” said Jakes. “I’ve seen a lot of things, I’ve met with presidents and interacted with CEOs.” Jakes continued: “I’ve been to the courtroom and watched a crying mother say goodbye to her son; I’ve been to visit those on death row. I’ve been there when individuals have been disconnected from life-support; I’ve been to drug interventions. This September marks 40 years that I’ve been in the ministry, so this isn’t anything that’s new, only [now] I’ll be in front of the cameras.” If social media buzz is any indi-

cation, the new show will be a hit. The show’s Twitter handle, @TDJakesShow, had almost 23,000 followers before a single episode had aired. Jakes said that social media will play a big role in his new venture. “We want people to tweet or go on Facebook to continue the conversation,” he said. “You can’t always solve a problem in the 45 minutes you have on the show and I don’t see this just as a show, but as a network communication device to uplift people. So, after the show is over, you can still go on social media to keep the conversation going.” Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter or other websites, it’s important to reach those who use social media, the bishop said. “The stats say

that hardly anyone sits in front of a big screen without a little screen in front of them in their hands and I’m guilty of that too. Being able to engage in every medium is important and I have a huge respect for the power of social media.” Produced by 44Blue Productions, EnLight Productions and T.D. Jakes Enterprises, the show will tackle various topics including human trafficking and heroism. Jakes noted that he’s thrilled to be on OWN. “Oprah Winfrey is an icon and a business mogul who has become a national treasure. I consider her a personal friend and I’m honored to have her support my new show,” he said. While individuals from all walks of life and just about every background might tune in, Jakes is certain that African-Americans particularly will openly receive his message. “The Black community overall gets it. I engage millions of them on social media and they’ve been very supportive by and large,” he said. Jakes said that he wants people that tune in to watch the show that all of us have an obligation to create a platform for awareness to causes that affect our community. “Understand this, I am the same person they’ve known for 40 years and I’m not changing my skin, I’m not changing the core issues that have defined me all of my life,” said Jakes. “At the end of the day, if I have broadened the perspective on a situation in daily life, if I have in any way helped to utilize resources [that people] didn’t know were available to them, then I have served my purpose.”

What does your resume say about you? Vanessa Morrison is a HR copywriter, a New Hire Consultant/Coach. She has been in business for seven years writing resumes and now teaches others and is the author of Maximize Your Job Success Series, most recently Maximize Your Job Success – Writing Your Resume – 8 Essentials to Get HR’s Attention to be released this fall. For speaking engagements, you can contact her at 214-810-5790.

Ask Vanessa addresses the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Q. Why Do I Have to Submit A Resume and What Does It Mean? A. A resume is a marketing highlight of your own experience, highlights and accomplishments. This gives you the opportunity to shine from the perspective of the employer of problems that you have solved. It is widely used by every employer and gives the employer a glimpse

of what you have accomplished in a period of time. It also lets the employer know how you’ve accomplished it and it gives insight into who you are. In most cases, an employer has about 20 seconds to look over your resume. So, what you put on paper you have to make it count. Q. Do I have to submit every job I have ever had on my resume? A. No you don’t have to submit every job you’ve ever had. You should submit the job that is related to the job description. The going trend is no more than 10 years of employment. If you don’t have 10 years of employment, then list the jobs you have that are related to the job description and put the others in a different section. If that doesn’t work, then put the jobs you have, paying special attention to the functions of the job that are related to the job description. If you don’t have enough experience, then use your volunteer expe-

rience or your role in an organization to compensate for it. Q. What is most critical when preparing my resume? A. What is most critical when preparing your resume is located in top third of the resume. After listing your name and address, one should have all of the following. When an employer looks at your resume, they want to see the position you are applying for example: Training Manager, Account Payable Coordinator, Customer Service Representative, etc. Second, the next thing they focus on is the Profile Summary, the Summary Statement, the Executive Profile or Profile, this replaces the Objective Statement. The Objective Statement is not used anymore. Third, is Professional Experience, Last is Education and Organizations or Volunteer Experience.

We will go more into the Profile Statement in the next publication. You can submit your questions about your resume to resumereminders@ gmail.com.

Kaepernick speaks up, forces fans to confront racism in America

Photo: Tailor Phillips

DeSoto High School joins movement The DeSoto High School volleyball team knelt during the National Anthem prior to their game earlier this week. The teammates were supported by their coach, school board trustee president Carl Sherman and other community leaders. [FINALCALL.COM/NNPA]

“I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” This bold declaration by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at a press conference following a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers set off a firestorm that shows no signs of abating. Mr. Kaepernick, 28, explained after cameras caught him sitting during the playing of the national anthem, that he was protesting police brutality and institutional racism reflected in stark disparities between Blacks in America

16

In a written statement, Mr. Sherman said, “In DeSoto, we teach our students to become thought leaders and active participants in their educational process. While their actions may make some people uncomfortable, I applaud these students for exercising their First Amendment rights in a civil, non-confrontational way.

and their White counterparts. “People don’t realize what’s really going on in this country. There are a lot things that are going on that are unjust,” Mr. Kaepernick explained to a gaggle of reporters. “People aren’t being held accountable. And that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that this country stands for freedom, liberty and justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.” Kaepernick continued: “I’ll continue to sit. I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.” Mr. Kaepernick, a Milwaukee native, hammered rogue cops.

None of us have the right to infringe on the rights extended to our young people as American citizens. I am thankful for our coaches and administrators who allowed our students to take the road less traveled. It is my prayer that it makes all the difference for our students, our community and these United States of America.”

He said he, like many Black men, has been stopped by police and recalled when he and a friend were moving out of a house while in college. They were the only two Blacks in the neighborhood and neighbors called the police who came into their apartment uninvited with guns drawn. “There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality. There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable,” he said. “People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right. That’s not right by anyone’s standards.” When asked if he was concerned that his position could be seen as a blanket indictment of law enforcement in general, Mr. Kaepernick replied: “There is police brutality. People of color have been targeted by police. So that’s a

large part of it and they’re government officials. They are put in place by the government. So that’s something that this country has to change.” “There’s things we can do to hold them more accountable. Make those standards higher. You have people that practice law and are lawyers and go to school for eight years, but you can become a cop in six months and don’t have to have the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. That’s insane. Someone that’s holding a curling iron has more education and more training than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us.” Police union leaders were incensed, demanded an apology and in San Francisco, police officers are threatening to boycott Niners games.

I’m divorcing, but I am the marrying kind!

Hi Alma –

I’m divorcing my husband of 24 years. (The ink is just about dry) We have been apart for the last 3 years. I’m new to dating again. I’ve been with my new guy for 2 years. We met on eHarmony. He’s amazing inside & out and I love him. I’m 47. My guy is 46. He is divorced. He has been divorced for 2.5 years. He was apart from his ex for 3 years before the divorce was final. So he’s been single for 5.5 years. I believe in marriage and I do want to get married again. How long should I date him? What’s enough time to give a man to pop the question? – Elizabeth Hi Elizabeth – You’re not quite free! Until the ink dries you’re still legally married, pretty wom-

an.TBT you have yet to join the squad of single sisterhood and trust me when I say, there are huge differences between each stage of marriage, separation and divorce. All three phases has its own umbrella of uncertainties. Like me, you married young. You’ve spent a large part of your life with one fella, exercising the commonality of compromise. This explains your comfort in cohabitation, longing for togetherness, and an extended view for two. Ain’t nothing wrong with that – but wait, for goodness sake and let’s pull up for a minute to reevaluate. What if you take more time to center and focus on you? to yourself. Your first marriage ended in divorce, that doesn’t mean you’re lacking, unlovable or incomplete. Okay, you’ve met a new guy, that’s cool. Allow him to come to the conclusion of marriage on his own, not meet a demand or ultimatum. I understand it’s been two years, but there’s no set limit to how long a great relationship should last before marriage, that’s a personal choice. You and I both know that marriage doesn’t make a relationship better nor does it complete who you are as a woman. You’ve had 25 years of practicing to be a good wife, live and love yourself unmarried for a few more years to come. You said dating’s still new to you, and if that’s the case, this isn’t the time to remarry. If and or when that time rolls around, you won’t need to Ask Alma, you and he will know, that you know that you know. And oh what a joy it will be! Alma
