Shania Gray was murdered. Brutally. According to her murderer, after he shot her twice, she asked him “why?” The talented and beautiful Shania was a track star and people said good thing about her as a student. The murder was a topic of discussion in many circles. Clearly there was no love being displayed for Shania’s murderer, 30-year-old Franklin Davis, who has admitted that he killed the teen who had actually been the babysitter for his children. Everyone was outraged over the killing, as well as the sexual abuse of Shania. Many found it hard to digest the information detailing the actions of Mr. Davis. There was a need to want to find some reason to explain this horrible murder. Some wanted to blame it on alcohol, others said he had to be high. Still others questioned his IQ level. Maybe he was dropped on his head as a child or had suffered years of sexual and physical abuse from a family member or close family friend. The actions of Mr. Franklin had to be explained away, to keep from acknowledging Cheryl Smith just how sick society has become. Surely his actions couldn’t be the actions of a person in their right mind. My brother-in-law asked if I thought the murderer should get the death penalty. Since we had never had a death penalty discussion, he couldn’t know what my answer would be. He did know, however, that I don’t play and I believe in accountability. He grew up in the same neighborhood as I and he knows that you have to pay the piper, you have to honor your commitments and you had better not let your mouth write a check that your butt can’t cash. He also knew that among my top movies are several with a similar underlying theme, like Four Brothers, The Warriors, Enter the Dragon, Three the Hard Way, Death Wish and Malcolm X. I told him that while I may have a streak of vigilantism in me, I can’t support a system that has been so corrupt and has been responsible for the incarceration and murders of countless of innocent people. Nope, no way was I going to support a system that was so fundamentally flawed and designed to really punish the poor, under or miseducated and disenfranchised. Over the years, many have paraphrased the quote that says, I would rather 1000 guilty go free than one innocent person be put to death. Just imagine the thoughts going through the head of someone who is about to take their last breath, knowing that they did nothing wrong. JTrue Mr. Franklin has admitted doing the crime. But there are so many men and women who are behind bars today because they copped a plea to avoid a harsher penalty. In the case of Mr. Davis, the evidence is overwhelmingly evident that he is the murderer. So, what will happen to him? Time will tell. As a firm believer in karma and divine intervention, I have to believe that justice will prevail. Whatever happens to him will not bring back that precious Shania Gray child, Shania. And sadly, there are so many more Shanias.

inappropriate, we need to listen and believe them -- even if they are the biggest liar you’ve ever come into contact with you have to err on the side of the child. Kimberly Ray wrote about her experiences as a child. Unlike Shania, who was a teenager and nonetheless vulnerable, Kimberly was a mere three-years-old when her stepfather brutally raped her. Kimberly is alive today and doing well. Our precious Shania is gone. We need to be more observant and protective of our children. Shania could have been my daughter. The thought of 30-year old Franklin Davis robbing that child of her spirit before taking her life is painful to think of. Look into her eyes. There was so much to look forward to and she was preparing to go into a courtroom and testify about Mr. Davis ‘ sexual acts. She was a brave young lady. We need to help others stand up to the perverts who assault them. We also need to let friends, associates, forenames and anyone else who comes into contact with our children know that they will pay dearly for their transgressions. No tolerance and no mercy!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Some want a meeting with Franklin Davis Franklin Davis has quite a few people who want to spend some time with him. The impression you get is that many don’t want to talk with him. Instead they want to inflict bodily harm. They Franklin Davis want to make him suffer for the horrific way that he murdered a young child after taking away her innocence. Franklin Davis is the 30-year-old man who after raping his children’s 16-year-old babysitter on more than one occasion, using social media lured her away, only to kill her, police believe, to keep her from testifying in court. It appears that Mr. Davis is, if nothing else, a man of his word. After Shania Gray babysat his children, she refused future requests before telling her grandmother that she had been raped. According to reports, Shania also said that Mr. Davis said he would kill her if she told. He kept his word! He later told police that after he shot her twice, he stepped on her neck, applying pressure until she stopped breathing. One word comes to mind when envisioning such a barbaric act: savage! It was also said that Mr. Franklin is using the “demon defense,” saying he never intended to Shania Gray hurt Shania but he was overcome by demons! In the same breath that he talked about killing Shania, he denied ever raping her. In any instance where a child says she or he has been raped, it is important to err on the side of the child. The adult can take care of themselves, while the child can be ruined for life by the double assault. And don’t even think about bringing up the week stories about how the child dresses, always gets in trouble or is a habitual liar. The predator knows all those stories and that is why and how they choose their victims. Mr. Davis is in jail charged with capital murder. Shania has taken her last breath. It is important to support and protect our children. Predators have to be taken care of also. Our children need to know that they and the rapists will be taken care of! Shania deserved better!

CURRY: 12 things to remember about the Trayvon Martin Case 1) Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old Miami student visiting Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, with his father when he was killed On Feb. 26. His father, George E. Curry who also lives in Miami, was visiting his girlfriend in Retreat at Twin Lakes, a gated townhouse community. 2) Trayvon had made a short trip to a nearby 7-Eleven store to pick of a bag of Skittles and a can of Arizona iced tea and was returning when he was stalked by Zimmerman. 3) George Zimmerman, whose father is White and mother is of Peruvian descent, fatally shot unarmed Trayvon in the chest. 4) Zimmerman was an unregistered neighborhood watch captain who was not supposed to carry a weapon while on patrol. Chris Tutko, director of Neighborhood Watch for the National Sheriffs' Association, told the Orlando Sentinel that Zimmerman had broken a couple of cardinal rules. "If you see something suspicious, you report it, you step aside and you let law enforcement do their job," Tutko said. "This guy went way beyond the call o f d u t y. A t t h e l e a s t , h e ' s overzealous." Tutko also said volunteers should never carry lethal weapons. He said "There's no reason to carry a gun." 5) Though Zimmerman acknowledged killing Trayvon, he was questioned and then released. Police did not follow basic guidelines of homicide investigations such as testing him for drugs and alcohol, though they performed the tests on Trayvon. 6) Trayvon was talking on his cell phone to his girlfriend shortly before his death and reported being followed by a strange man in a vehicle. 7) A police dispatcher specifically told Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon, instructions he ignored. When Zimmerman confirmed he was

Trayvon Martin

following Trayvon, the dispatcher said. “OK, we don't need you to do that.” Zimmerman continued anyway. 8) Benjamin Crump, the family’s lawyer, said that based on 911 tapes, Zimmerman harbored at least three stereotypes of Black males: “He said, No.1, he looked suspicious. No.2, he must be high. No. 3, he’s looking to break in some place.” 9) Some said that Trayvon became a suspect because he wore a hooded sweat shirt, known as a hoodie. Some have even blamed Trayvon’s death on his clothing. On the March 23 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, network contributor Geraldo Rivera said, “I am urging the parents of Black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin's death as George Zimmerman was.” However others, such as CNN’s Anderson Cooper, say they frequently adorn hoodies and have never been viewed as suspected criminals. And no one dare suspect New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick or Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, both known for wearing hoodies, of being criminals. Some kooks posting on Fox News Network site were extremely crass. One wrote, "GOOD SHOT ZIMMY. I’m just glad Zimmerman didn’t miss and hit an innocent bystander."

10) Police say Zimmerman was not arrested because of Florida’s stand your ground law, a measure that gives broad protection to any citizen acting in self-defense. However, Jeb Bush, who as governor of Florida signed the stand your ground bill into law, said the legislation does not cover the neighborhood watch captain who shot Trayvon Martin to death. “This law does not apply to this particular circumstance,” Bush said after an education panel discussion at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Stand your ground means stand your ground. It doesn’t mean chase after somebody who’s turned their back.” 11) At 9 years old, Trayvon saved his father’s life. In an interview with Roland Martin on TV One, the elder Martin said: “At the time, he was 9 years old. We had just came from the Little League football park. We fell asleep while the stove was on. A grease fire started. I went into the kitchen to try to put the grease fire out. The grease splattered all over my leg. My body went into shock and by me and him being alone in the house, I started calling out his name. He finally woke up and, at 9 years old, he pulled me from out of the kitchen, where the kitchen cabinets were on fire. He pulled me out of the kitchen onto the balcony. He actually went back into the house and got the cell phone and called 911.” 12) Trayvon’s parents still have nightmares about his death. His father, in an exclusive interview with NNPA publishers, said: “I can’t describe the feeling, I can’t describe what was going through my mind because I was actually staring at a photo of my pride and joy on the ground dead. I still see the photo now – his eyes weren’t closed all the way, his mouth wasn’t closed, it was the worst feeling of my life.” George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA) and editorial director of Heart & Soul magazine. He is a keynote speaker, moderator, and media coach.

CAMPAIGN TRAIL An African Election, premieres in October NEW YORK —Shining a light on stories from diverse corners of the African Diaspora, the series AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange brings you an election season special, An African Election, on Monday, October 1 at 6:30pm ET on the 24/7 public television channel WORLD. The show repeats at 8:30pm ET and midnight ET (9:00pm PT). The 6:30pm and midnight broadcasts will be followed by a half-hour companion show connected to WORLD’s “Your Vote 2012” initiative, a program that is co-produced with Black Public Media. The general release of An African Election to all public television stations nationwide follows on Wednesday, October 3 (check local listings). An African Election, a film by Jarreth Merz, captures the 2008 presidential elections in Ghana. Merz follows the key players for almost three months to provide an unprecedented insider’s view of the political, economic and social forces at work in Ghana. The filmmaker builds suspense by taking the viewer down the back roads of the nation, capturing each unexpected twist and turn in a contest that is always exciting and never predictable. Throughout the film, Merz depicts the pride and humanity of the largerthan-life politicians, party operatives and citizens who battle for the soul of their country. AfroPoP is produced by Black Public Media and co-presented by American Public Television (APT). In advance of the broadcast, Black Public Media encourages viewers to visit AfroPoP.tv for a robust online dialogue about democracy in action throughout the African Diaspora. Frame Your World by the Word of God By Donald Lee I MESSENGER

As children of the Most High God, we’ve been empowered by Him, our heavenly Father, to function in this earth in the supernatural, in ways that supersede natural or earthly abilities and that surpass human comprehension. While this statement may interfere with the theology of many people, the few who actually get this — and who search the scriptures and study the Word diligently — will find themselves discovering a whole other world coming alive to them. They’ll begin to perceive things that they couldn’t perceive or sense before; they’ll begin to see themselves as who God, our Father, created them to be — supernatural beings clad in natural (or earthly) bodies. Their way of thinking becomes transfigured — revolutionized. And there’s an uncanny boldness (see Ephesians 3:12; Acts 4:13) that comes upon them. It is with this new-found level of understanding of our relationship with our God — our Daddy — that revelation knowledge takes up residence within our inward man. And with this information, we learn how to flow in this earth as our Daddy commands.

Hebrews 11:3 says: Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (In your private study time, read slowly and meditate on each verse in the 11th chapter of Hebrews. Each shares how God moved on the behalf of those who put their faith into practice.) Now, let’s get back to this third verse in Hebrews 11. What’s key here is that we see in scripture that “the worlds” were “framed” by the Word of God. Everything we see and can’t see, everything both in this visible world and the invisible world, the things we can understand and the things we cannot: Everything was created by God’s Word. In the natural (realm), if we want to build a house, we’ve got get lumber from somewhere, right? We’ve got to pay a contractor — things like that. This is an example of us framing our world by our words with things that do appear. In order for us to build a house, the lumber we need is already here; it’s tangible; we can see it; it exists. So does the contractor. But all of these things were created by God from nothing. He spoke them and they appeared. The Holy Spirit reminds us that God created us to be just like Him (Genesis 1:26). He loves us. He has adopted us as His children through the works of Jesus. Since we have crowned Him as Lord and

Savior of our lives, we now operate in His splendor. Turn to John 1:1-14. Read the first 14 verses (King James Version), but start off by emphasizing the first three: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. The same three verses in the Amplified Bible say: In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. Jesus is the Word. Jesus was the Word of God made flesh. In other Words, the Word of God dwelt among the people here in the earth, in the person of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the sent One of God. We see the will of God through the example of His Word, Jesus the Christ. We’ve accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior. Our mandate now, the charge that the Christ, the Word of God, has given us is to allow Him, the Word of God, to be expressed through us. We are made up of flesh and blood, right? When Christ was here, He came in the

“flesh.” He had a fleshly body, an earthly, mortal body. Yet people were able to read the Word of God and know the will of God through the example that He laid out before us with His walk. Thus, He was the Word of God, the will of God, made flesh. We now must be the Word of God made flesh, just as Christ was the Word who dwelt in the earth in the flesh. Don’t cringe. The Spirit is saying that the Word of God abides in us. Therefore, we must be living examples here in the earth for others to see. The thing is not for them to see us and try to live like us, but to see Christ in us and begin to live their lives in and for Him. DCCCD celebrates Constitution Day (Dallas) – The Dallas County Community College District will celebrate Constitution Day in September with programs, giveaways and entertainment on its college campuses. Lectures and panel discussions about the U.S. Constitution are some of the activities planned. North Lake College kicked off activities with a voter registration event on Thurs., Sept. 13, as part of its “Student Welcome Back” celebration. Mon., Sept. 17 - Eastfield College – Pleasant Grove Campus, 802 S. Buckner, Dallas – 6 p.m. – Eastfield College faculty member Carlos Rovelo will discuss “The Consitution: ‘We the People’” in the community room. “We the People” is a dramatic expression of citizen consent that expresses the principles at the heart of the U.S. Constitution – the belief that humans create government by their own consent and, once created, governments must be compelled to limit their

The free presentation will focus on how demographically, economically, socially and politically diverse America is, 225 years after the Constitution was signed at the Pennsylvania State House on Sept. 17, 1787. - El Centro College, 800 Main St., Dallas – 11:30 a.m. – A number of activities are scheduled throughout the day in the Student Center, including a treasure hunt (with a prize going to the student who crosses the finish line first); distribution of copies of the U.S. Constitution in book form; a crossword puzzle/word find for students who are sitting in the Student Center; Constitution IQ and “real or fake” quizzes (administered on a large screen in the Student Center area); and a poster contest for graphic design classes. Posters featuring famous quotes will be placed on stands during the mid-day events, and free apple pie will be served. - Richland College, 12800 Abrams Rd., Dallas – 10:10 a.m. – Guest speaker Dr. Anthony Champagne, professor of political science and associate dean of graduate education at the University of Texas at Dallas, will discuss “The Constitutional Revolution of 1937” in room 118 of Sabine Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. Richland College also is sponsoring a Constitution Day essay contest. Students were asked to write a 500-word essay explaining how the U.S. democratic election

SWEET SOUNDS

By Jamille Bradfield Entertainment Writer

GRAND PRAIRIE – For every mountain, you’ve brought me over. For every trial, you’ve brought me through. For every blessing, Hallelujah. For this I give you praise. These lyrics from Kurt Carr’s gospel hit, For Every Mountain, filled the Verizon Theatre as the St. Mark Sanctuary Choir delivered a soulstirring performance that recently led the group to victory as the Dallas/Fort Worth regional winner of Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound 2012 search for the Best Gospel Choir in America. The choir brought the audience to its feet with a memorable performance that momentarily transformed the Verizon Theatre from an entertainment venue into an impromptu house of worship. The choir’s performance of the selection was so strong that it prompted a brief encore before its director, Darius Nelson, faced the music in front of the celebrity panel of judges. “This song is near and dear to our ministry because we’ve been through quite a bit, to say the least,” said Nelson. “We haven’t had a pastor in 22 months. A lot of times churches split and people fall away, but look at the people that we still have. I like to sing songs that mean something, that keep people connected to what the call is. That’s how it happened. I don’t even know how the song got on the list, but when I saw it, I appreciate God for how he works, and we do have a pastor now.” The St. Mark Sanctuary Choir's church home is St. Mark Baptist Church which is based in Little Rock, Arkansas, and led by its new senior pastor, Phillip L. Pointer, Sr.

gospel recording artists CeCe Winans, Erica Campbell, Fred Hammond, Bishop Hezekiah Walker and VaShawn Mitchell.

As the first place Dallas regional winner, the St. Mark Sanctuary Choir won $10,000 and secured a spot at the national finale on Nov. 4 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Second place went to St. John Church Music Ministry (last year’s first place winner) with a $5,000 prize. St. John was also awarded Verizon’s People’s Choice Award and an additional $5,000 prize.

In addition to St. Mark’s and St. John’s choirs, other choirs that competed for this year’s Dallas area regional title included awe-inspiring performances by Selah; Marquinn Middleton & The Miracle Chorale; Carnel Davis & Incorporated to Praise; and God’s Tabernacle of Deliverance Bishop’s Choir. In observance of the event’s fifth anniversary, Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound choir search expanded this year to include both community and college choirs for the first time.

The Tour The national choir search, which originated five years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, made its first stop on the 2012 tour in the Dallas area at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas, on Sept. 6. This was the first year Dallas was added to the tour. Prior years saw Houston as the official Texas tour stop.

Giving back Participating choirs collected and donated more than 700 previously used wireless phones to HopeLine from Verizon — a program that turns nolonger-used wireless phones into support for those affected by domestic violence. St. John Music Ministry received the HopeLine Champion Award for collecting the most phones. Verizon, through HopeLine, will award a $2,500 grant in support of a domestic violence program selected by the St. John choir. Proceeds from HopeLine are used to provide wireless phones and airtime to victims of domestic violence and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention, awareness and advocacy.

“Dallas has such enormous talent. This was one of the places I’m sure when they starting coordinating everything, this had to be one of the places that they had to go and of course Verizon has such a strong presence here in the Dallas area that it was a no-brainer,” said GRAMMY Award-winning gospel great and Texas native Yolanda Adams. Other stops along the nationwide tour include similar choir competitions in Atlanta, Washington, D.C.; Newark, Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles, before all regional winners meet in New York for the grand finale where choirs will be competing for the distinction of Best Gospel Choir in America and up to $50,000.

Since the wireless phone recycling program’s launch in 2001, HopeLine from Verizon has collected more than 8 million phones, distributed more than $14.2 million in cash grants, and handed out more than 123,000 phones with more than 400 million minutes of free wireless service for use by domestic violence survivors.

This year’s tour is being co-hosted by another GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel artist, Donald Lawrence and Ms. Adams. The celebrity judges for the competition include award-winning !

Hiding in Plain Sight is a must-see FILM REVIEW: By Jamille Bradfield DALLAS – Written, directed and produced by Dallas native M. Legend Brown, Hiding in Plain Sight, is a moving story of unemployment, homelessness, survival and faith. The plot centers on the film’s main character, Darius Blackmon (Kelly O’Neil Jackson), a college-educated, Christian man who, as a result of a declining economy, loses his job and cannot find work. Things take a turn for the worse, when his wife Josephine’s “Josey” (Sharice Henry Chasi) job does not bring in enough money to sustain the couple, their two children and a mountain of never-ending bills. Left with no other choice after exhausting all options for assistance via family and friends, the close-knit family of four winds up living in their car. Too proud to ask his mother figure/ grandmother, played by Irma P. Hall, for money, Darius keeps his family together by attempting to demonstrate the patience of Job as he relies upon his faith to help him digest each day’s serving of life on the streets. The film’s sub-plot features Kevin Allen (Marty Ezelle) a respected schoolteacher who goes above and beyond for troubled students and dropouts to help them get back in and stay in school. He has a government voucher program that provides books and shoes for the underprivileged. When needs are not covered by the vouchers, Kevin continuously reaches into his own pocket to

With the issue of homelessness being so prevalent in today’s society due to a realworld declining economy, Brown felt it was important to shed light on the problem. He was so motivated to do this project that he completed the screenplay in only six days and shot the film in 10. Performances to watch include Jackson and Chasi as co-leads. Their on-screen chemistry is undeniable and their portrayal as loving parents who are willing to do whatever it takes to protect their children during this difficult time, is powerful and very real. In addition, Ezelle and Ms. Hall

pay for necessities for his students, like eyeglasses — a move that creates tension with his wife, Terri (Rachael Webb). Darius’ frustration about his repeated failure to land a job is compounded by his inner need to be the man and provide for his family. Keeping up a façade of normalcy by day and hiding in their car in a makeshift homeless campground at night, the Blackmon family’s outlook is bleak until a chance meeting with Kevin Allen sets them on the path to a reversal of fortune. Director M. Legend Brown says Hiding in Plain Sight, which is his second feature film, was inspired by a conversation he overheard while visiting an uncle in the hospital. He heard a family pleading with hospital personnel about their relative who

was in need of medical attention but had no health insurance. As he and the family walked towards the hospital exit, he inquired as to what the problem was. The family explained the situation to him and when they reached the family’s station wagon parked outside, Brown noticed clothes and other household items piled up in the vehicle. The family disclosed they were living out of their car. J

deliver strong supporting performances. Ezelle’s portrayal of an educator who cares as much about his student’s lessons as he does their home life, is refreshing. His acting chops make Kevin a believable and likable character. In her usual Soul Food fashion, Ms. Hall gives a stellar performance as the we’ve-come-this-far-byfaith family matriarch. Finally, newcomer young Devion Camp has a scene-stealing, crocodile tears moment when his character, Michael Blackmon, is caught red-handed eating other children’s lunches at school because he is hungry. Overall, this is a well-written film with an important social message. This film definitely breaks through the stereotype that homeless people come from poor, uneducated circumstances. For every parent who ever complains about their children being spoiled, ungrateful or having a sense of entitlement, look for a screening of Hiding in Plain Sight at your local theater or church and take your children with you. If this film does not put things in perspective, I don’t know what will. Definitely worth seeing – three and half stars (out of five)

Recording Artist and GRAMMY速 Award-Winning Songwriter Pastor Charles Jenkins aims for the Best of Both Worlds: Music that Inspires People and Encourages Good Works

Pastor Charles Jenkins and Fellowship Chicago have had an "Awesome" summer, and it looks like the fall will be just as uplifting. The Inspired People/ EMI Gospel recording artists released their new album, The Best of Both Worlds, in June, 2012, to critical acclaim and extraordinary fan support. The album was number one on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart for three consecutive weeks when it was released, and is currently in the Top 10. "Awesome," the first single from the album, has resonated with choirs, gospel lovers and consumers all over the world. Radio, retail, media and pastors have been huge champions of the recording, which was penned by Jenkins, a G R A M M Y 速 Aw a r d - w i n n i n g songwriter. "Awesome" has held at number one for 12 weeks on Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs Chart. Jenkins, a visionary faith and community leader who is the senior pastor of the legendary 8,000 member Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois, is not surprised that the album, especially the single, "Awesome," has inspired so many people. "I believe everyone has a 'my God is awesome' testimony," he says. "If we pause and ponder, we see God's hand all through our lives," says Jenkins. "He moves mountains, keeps us in valleys and hides us from the rain in stormy circumstances. We hope people will receive the album as practical yet profound. We tried to create music that is simple and theologically sound, yet singable and relatable in a way that will engage people to engage God. In a PAGE 16

!

cultural climate where so many things can bring you down, we're really excited to create music that will lift people up." Jenkins and Fellowship Chicago have been ministering "Awesome" and other songs on the album to large and enthusiastic crowds all over the country, including N e w Yo r k C i t y ' s Central Park, Atlanta's Centennial Park, Bishop T.D. Jakes' Manpower conference in Dallas, and Jay-Z's Made in America Music Festival during the Labor Day Weekend in Philadelphia, among others major events and conferences. But Jenkins is determined that the inspiration we get from the music should lead to action, not merely a moment of reflection and gratitude. "The idea is to marry music and mission to drive people to a higher calling of responsibility beyond their own inspiration and enjoyment," he says. "If all we are is inspired, we are not impactful. Inspiration without impact is impotence," he adds. "You are all riled

up by the music. So what are you going to do with that?" Jenkins believes he has one answer. He wants artists to use their celebrity to "encourage people to live beyond the lyric, to reach beyond the rhythm, to serve beyond the song," and he's leading by example. He's using his concerts and other appearances as a call to action for the audiences that come to hear them. "As we've been going around the country, we're inviting people to get involved in doing something to help others." They spotlight charities or nonprofits that are helping people and communities, urge people to get involved, and they provide information and opportunity for them to do so. The first efforts he is encouraging people to support are HopeMob (www.hopemob.org) and Charity Water (www.charitywater.org). HopeMob is an online philanthropic community that brings together people in need with a group of "generous strangers" who want to help. The goal of the site is to quickly meet needs of one person or family at a time. Charity Water is a nonprofit organization with a goal of bringing clean, safe drinking water to some of the 800 million people who live in developing countries and do not have access to clean water. The next effort he wants to focus on is violence in inner cities. "We want to raise awareness around this issue and challenge people to get more engaged and involved in serving youth-a forgotten population in our cities," he says. Jenkins' ultimate goal is to build a network of artists who want to use their music and celebrity to help people-

especially at-risk young people-and to improve communities. His plan is to identify nonprofits and "do-gooder" forprofits that are serving their communities in cities around the country, and to create an infrastructure through which artists can spotlight those organizations and provide information and opportunity for their audiences to connect with and support those efforts. He believes there is a great appetite among musicians to be involved with work that lifts people up; he just wants to find ways to coordinate those efforts. "I've been approached by artists or their management about engaging in some of these initiatives" says Jenkins. "There are lots of artists doing great stuff, and lots of others who want to do great stuff but don't know how. I'm excited that as ground work is laid and as clarity is given, we can create that kind of consistent good work on behalf of people who need it. As musicians we should be using our gifts not just to make a living but to give life." Volunteering, says Jenkins, doesn't just help those in need, it helps the volunteer as well. "We are blessed when we are a blessing, we grow when we give," he says. "Scripture challenges us to serve, give, and love, and the Glory will go to God. I want to be on the side of scripture-contributing not just my music but my life beyond the music." Pastor Jenkins' efforts to tie inspirational music to a call to action, is part of his larger vision of strengthening the ties between faith-based institutions and the communities in which they are located. Since taking the helm at Fellowship as senior pastor almost See JENKINS, page 18

Jenkins, continued from page 16 twelve years ago, at age 24, He has created a variety of life changing programs and services for children, youth, and adults within the church and in the community. Under his leadership, Fellowship has provided food, clothing, personal care items, and critical assistance to tens of thousands of people in need through several of the church's outreach programs. His concern about young people moved him to establish Maximum Exposure, a youth development program designed to elevate the thinking, understanding, and behavior of urban youth. Jenkins also founded Gladiators, a mentoring group that focuses on the growth and progress of young African American boys. Jenkins also created the Fellowship Educational and Economic Development Corporation to further focus on community improvement and empowerment. He is currently spearheading The Legacy Project,

a transformative enterprise with the goal of changing the landscape of urban Chicago while producing cultural amenities, vocational opportunities, an educational hub, and a worship facility. The campus will include, among other things, a school, a health center and eateries, and will create 400 new jobs in the community. Fellowship will break ground on the campus in January 2013. The author of the leadership book, Thriving In Change, and a sought-after adviser to leaders in government, politics, advocacy organizations and business, Jenkins believes that people who get involved with helping others and their communities will not only be fulfilled, but they will also expand their legacy footprint. "After Jesus finished preaching the gospel, he did something," he says. "Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered not just for what he said, but what he did. We always remember what people do."

Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, A Plus Kids is expanding its schools to 13 cities to include Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, Jacksonville and Los Angeles. In having a vision for growth they recognized the lure of hip hop; "We have a gospel class already but most of the kids weren't interested in learning gospel music. When I asked if they wanted to do hip hop the kids and their parents became excited," explains Radio Moe, program director.

The hip hop class, taught by renown Hip Hop Historian and rap artist Sean XLG teaches kids, teens and young adults how to rap. The class begins with an overview of hip hop history to educate students on how the art form was created. "In learning the origins, students will develop an appreciation and respect for the craft and the pioneers who developed hip hop culture," states Sean XLG, the schools' National Director of Hip Hop. The class will focus on the disciplines of songwriting, vocal performance and recording. EDUCATION NOTES

$100 MILLION CHALLENGE GRANT FOR BLACK HIGHER EDUCATION Organization says "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!" --

for Educate Black America that, "Educating Black America is something we must do, can do, and should do." If everybody does their part and their share, the TRILLION DOLLARS spent by consumers and businesses in Black America and other supporters of Black Higher Education can generate a $100 Million fund. The goal will be met if $1 out of every $10,000 spent can be leveraged through the Educate Black America initiative, according to Alvin J. Lee, founder and former Fortune 500 executive. "Shoppers can choose from top American retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Macy's, Walmart, Advance Auto, Office Depot and many more. Educate Black America Shopping has products and services for you, your house, your car, your family, your pets and your business." The program has been expanded with two new features, EBA Travel and Appleseed. EBA Travel can handle all personal and business travel needs and converts a portion of travel expenses to scholarships when travel arrangements are made through the EBA Travel link on the Educate Black America home page. All EBA Travel arrangements are made through marketing partnerships with industry leading travel providers such as Expedia, Hotwire, Hotels.com, and Enterprise.

The late former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was the national spokesperson for Educate Black America until her death in 2005.

Nationwide -- Acknowledging that education is the key to opportunity in America, a portion of virtually every dollar people spend can be converted into a scholarship fund to support Black Higher Education. The Educate Black America initiative uses cause marketing through online shopping from its web site, www.am-blk-coll.com, to sell the best products and services at the same prices found at other web sites with one important difference and advantage. Every purchase from the Educate Black America Shopping site contributes to underwrite scholarships that include K-12, college, post secondary trade and career, distance learning, as well as management and professional studies. Former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, noted human and civil rights advocate, said as national spokesperson

Appleseed is an exciting and innovative new development that makes it possible for people, businesses, organizations, and nonprofits to earn cash and scholarships. ABC Ventures is hiring marketing interns in local markets across the country to promote and support Educate Black America. Supporters can keep current on Educate Black America through pages on Facebook, and Twitter. For more info, visit www.am-blk-coll.com

In our library From Stage to Page, Writer commemorates 9/11 and Holds Us "CAPTIVE" with New Book Release

Los Angeles - What happens when a single, transformational event alters the course of history, when foreign policy is driven by fear? Looking back eleven years later, is what happened more important than how we reacted to it? If the right lessons weren't learned, are we in danger of repeating history? Award-winning playwright turned author, Timothy Allen Smith answers these questions and more in "CAPTIVE," a riveting new novel from Twenty / 20 Books, based on his acclaimed stage play of the same name. In "CAPTIVE," Smith masterfully parallels the events of 9/11 and

Support Black -owned bookstores

ultimately, challenges the reader to see how fear can be the most dangerous terrorist and our minds the most restrictive prison of all. "CAPTIVE" is the story of nine strangers, taken hostage and held in a room together. By unfolding a sequence of events that intersects the lives of these individuals, from various ethnic backgrounds, Smith expertly creates his own little societal melting pot. By locking them in a room together with no way to escape, Smith leaves them with only one thing in common...fear. "CAPTIVE" debuted as a touring stage play in 2003, playing to packed houses across the country. Audiences became enthralled by Smith's vision of an alternative to the deafening beat of war drums dominating public discussion after 9/11. The overwhelming response compelled Smith to create a vehicle that would allow him to expand on the themes of cultural sensitivity and diversity in a post 9/11 world.

The idea for a trilogy was born, with "CAPTIVE" as the first of three novels, following the hostages from the night of their ordeal, on through the rest of their lives as they cope with the aftermath. Definitely a thinking man's book, Smith offers the reader a hopeful vision of a future where endless wars and senseless bloodshed are not the only alternatives. In light of recent, real life events, i.e. the Colorado theater shooting and Sikh Temple massacres; "CAPTIVE" could not be more relevant and, as such, has been nominated by Villanova University and the University of Wisconsin for their "One-Book" and "Big Read" programs respectively. In "CAPTIVE," what begins as an innocent night at the theater quickly turns into the unthinkable. Smith pulls no punches in taking the reader into the room and allowing him to be a fly on the wall as the hostages react, not only to the situation, but more importantly, to each other. Racial tension, homophobia, and even age come into play as heated discussions and accusations soar and hit like bullets. The characters represent all walks of life including the young and affluent conservatives, Mark and Amber O'Conner; ultra liberal academics, Lisa Woodward and Walter Curtis; born and raised inner city kids, Toshia and Dexter Swindell; the Spanish speaking, Eleodora and Lena Gonzalez; and Robert Cohen, a former marine with a few secrets of his own.

moderator; Marshall Hobbs, who will discuss civil liberties; Dr. Jonathan Michelon, who will talk about comparative constitutions; and Michael Noble and Dr. Cindy Castaneda, who both will focus on the Second Amendment debate. Mountain View College, 4849 W. Illinois Ave., Dallas – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – MVC faculty member Jonathon York will lead a discussion for Constitution Day that also is tied to the college’s Common Book project this fall, which is to read Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. York discovered that the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17 also marks the anniversary of the Occupy Movement; the themes of Ehrenreich’s book resonate with the themes of that movement. As a result, York’s presentation is titled “The Constitution and the Politics of Public Petition.” The discussion will be held in room S1029/1030 of the Student Building

hip hop artist Brother Ali who will be performing @ Trees in Dallas, TX w/ his band Blank Tape Beloved as part of his 38-date North American Tour "Mourning in America."

Mon., Sept. 17 Eastfield College – Pleasant Grove Campus, 802 S. Buckner, Dallas – 6 p.m. – Eastfield College faculty member Carlos Rovelo will discuss “The Consitution: ‘We the People’” in the community room. “We the People” is a dramatic expression of citizen consent that expresses the principles at the heart of the U.S. Constitution – the belief that humans create government by their own consent and, once created, governments must be compelled to limit their reach. The free presentation will focus on how demographically, economically, socially and politically diverse America is, 225 years after the Constitution was signed at the Pennsylvania State House on Sept. 17, 1787. El Centro College, 800 Main St., Dallas – 11:30 a.m. Richland College, 12800 Abrams Rd., Dallas – 10:10 a.m. Students were asked to write a 500-word essay explaining how the U.S. democratic election system was built and how it is maintained under the Constitution; how students can honor the Constitution during this election year; and why students should celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
