Message to the people...

INSIDE I MESSENGER September 21, 2012

Sure, American Airlines is dealing with some serious issues right now. When you take into consideration: bankruptcy court, union negotiations, layoffs, the economy, well I am sure employees would say that these are not the best of times! Still you have to say kudos to a corporation that understands the significance of being a good corporate citizen and the employees who display an overwhelming spirit of volunteerism.

While employees are concerned about whether or not they will be receiving a pink slip; they are still taking time out to help others. This weekend legendary athletes and celebrities have joined forces with American Airlines/American Eagle for the 2nd annual Help for Haiti Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Sky Creek Ranch, 600 Promontory Drive in Keller, TX 76248. Actor Earl Billings, former Dallas Cowboys Ed “Too Tall” Jones and Everson Walls, actor Basil Wallace, former NBA Players Spud Webb and Moses Malone, and former NFL players Dwight Hicks and Mike “Scooter” McGruder are among the celebs committed to the celebrity golf tournament and gala, where athletes, actors and philanthropists have united to raise continued awareness and funding for medical training in Lamardelle, Haiti in support of the island’s redevelopment efforts following the 2010 earthquake. The gala will be Friday, September 21, 2012 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm and the golf tournament begins at 7:00am on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

According to American Airlines officials, “Having served Haiti for over 40 years, American Airlines was the first commercial airline on the scene following the devastating January 12, 2010, earthquake that struck Haiti. The airline flew 30 missions into Haiti in the days following the earthquake, transporting relief workers, medical personnel and more than 400,000 pounds of humanitarian aid and evacuating more than 700 people. American Airlines is dedicated to the uplifting and rebuilding of Haiti, making it an important cornerstone in their Caribbean operations. American Airlines is proud to be a contributor to Haiti's economic development, flying not only hundreds of thousands of passengers every year, but millions of pounds of cargo and now assisting with securing funding for medical training.” Over the years, American Airlines has been a strong supporter of the Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation. I’ve also witnessed the employees volunteering on a number of different fronts, whether it was for UNCF, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Paul Quinn College or KwanzaaFest; I could go on and on about the level of professionalism and level of commitment from the employees. They are great!

As Mr. Gregory celebrated his 80th birthday in Dallas earlier this year, Frances Cade, Lillian Greer, Lorna Hunter, Allison Jones Todd, Barbara Ladson, Debbie Maxberry, Pamela Pujo, Cheryl Robinson, Marian Sims, Frances Estelle, La’Wonda Peoples, Kimberly Brown, Margo Anthony, Lisa Young, Valerie Durant and Kendra Washington were front and center, providing a level of professionalism and elegance to a weekend of events. I know this is not the best of times, but I applaud the employees of American Airlines for continuing to give of themselves and not for headlines. It’s also great to see celebrities who don’t always have their hands outstretched for another payday, especially when it’s for charity. We need to recognize those who really give and give them our support in return. Actually, I think I will go to www.aa.com right now and gain some more miles, while also hopefully saving a job or two!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Staying On Course By Aaron Hopkins

One of the most difficult things to do when you go on a long trip is to stay on course. We have access to so many different tools to guide us today that it seems impossible to get lost. Our cell phones come equipped with GPS navigation systems, our cars and trucks come with on-star and DVD driven road maps. So the question is how do we still get off course? It is often on purpose that we take a route that will add time to our traveling destination and some times we get lost on accident. Some people have a good sense of direction and others of us struggle with keeping our bearings. Some trips or journeys are too important for us to take shortcuts that we are unfamiliar with. Sometimes it’s best to follow a road that’s proven and well travelled. So is this true with life’s journey? Or are we just trying to make it into a short trip? Do you ever feel like the current path you’re on is not getting you to your destination fast enough? Do you think you have gotten off course? I feel like that way sometime myself. At that point I ask myself, who’s guiding me? I would like to make sure I have the right instructions and the best guidance possible to reach my destination. However, this can be difficult if you think you are sure you know where you are going. It is amazing how we can purchase a new appliance or a new gadget that comes with operating instructions that we follow to the letter but we will not take sound instructions on how to live our lives. The most successful people I know have one thing in common, they all have accepted guidance! We can get beside ourselves so quickly when it comes to making decisions without allowing anyone to offer advice. Instead we allow pride to make us think we know the way. This is why parenting is so difficult today. The parents have become the secondary guides to our children while reality television and the wrong types of friends have become the primary instructors. Life is not an ordinary trip that we can just pull out our GPS phones and get to the destination. Someone who has travelled down the road we wish to use is qualified to give us turn-by-turn navigation! They can even tell us about some short-cuts every now and then. But the point is that if they have gone down the road already, why not let their guidance be used for another trip? We must strengthen our relationships with those who look to us for guidance so they will be confident that we desire to help them stay on course! Aaron Hopkins is the President/CEO B.B.N.B. CURRY: 15 Memorable Quotes from the Democratic Convention #15 – Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (Mo.): “Congress is unable to do the work of the American people because too many politicians believe George E. Curry t h a t c o m p r o m i s e means capitulation. This must change, because just as bees cannot sting and make honey at the same time, members of Congress cannot simultaneously make passionate enemies and expect political progress.” #14 – Rep. Barney Frank (Mass.): “When it comes to Wall Street reform, you'd think Republicans have amnesia. Like they've forgotten how we got into the Great Recession in the first place. Did they forget they were in power leading up to the crisis? That it was their plan that set Wall Street free and crashed the economy? Did they forget that this whole crisis started because banks gave out loans they knew people couldn't pay? That those banks were gambling with our money? Using the kinds of financial tricks only Mitt Romney's accountant would understand?” #13 – Newark Mayor Cory Booker: “When your country is in a costly war with our soldiers sacrificing abroad and our nation is facing a debt crisis at home, being asked to pay your fair share isn’t class warfare. It’s patriotism.” #12 – Massachusetts Gov. Devaul Patrick “Mitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he's fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn't one of them. He's a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.” #11 – Former Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Christ: “Half a century ago, Ronald Reagan, the man whose relentless optimism

inspired me to enter politics, famously said that he didn’t leave the Democratic Party; the party left him. I can certainly relate. I didn’t leave the Republican Party; it left me. Then again, as my friend Jeb Bush recently noted, Reagan himself would have been too moderate and too reasonable for today’s GOP.” #10- Massachusetts Senatorial Candidate Elizabeth Warren: "After all, Mitt Romney's the guy who said corporations are people. No, Governor Romney, corporations are not people. People have hearts, they have kids, they get jobs, they get sick, they cry, they dance. They live, they love, and they die. And that matters. That matters. That matters because we don't run this country for corporations, we run it for people." #9 – First Lady Michelle Obama: “Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it…and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love. And he believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity… you do not slam it shut behind you… you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” #8- HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: “What's missing from the RomneyRyan plan for Medicare is Medicare. Instead of the Medicare guarantee, Republicans would give seniors a voucher that limits what is covered.” #7 - Rep. Luis Gutierrez (Ill.): “President Obama is protecting immigrants. Mitt Romney wants to send them back. This election will determine whether high school valedictorians, football team captains, and student council presidents will be treated with respect – or treated like suspects.” #6- Musician James Taylor:

"It's an empty chair, it makes you nervous, don't worry — I'm going to sit on it. I'm not going to talk to it." #5 – Former President Bill Clinton: “In Tampa, the Republican argument against the president’s re-election was actually pretty simple – pretty snappy. It went something like this: ‘We left him a total mess. He hasn’t cleaned it up fast enough. So fire him and put us back in.’” #4- Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley: “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan now say they want to take America back. And so we ask: Back to what? Back to the failed policies that drove us into a deep recession? Back to the days of record job losses? Back to the days when insurance companies called being a woman a ‘pre-existing condition’? No, thank you. I don't want to go back.” #3- The late Senator Ted Kennedy (clip from 1994 debate with Mitt Romney): “I have supported Roe v. Wade. I am pro-choice. My opponent is multiplechoice.” #2 – Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm: “Mitt Romney loves our lakes and our trees. He loves our cars so much, they even have their own elevator. But the people who design and build and sell those cars? Well, in Romney’s world, the cars get the elevator, and the workers get the shaft!” #1- Ted Strickland, former Ohio governor: “If Mitt was Santa Claus, he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves." CAMPAIGN TRAIL Former Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Morris Overstreet endorses Keith Hampton

Hon. Morris Overstreet

Appeals.

AUSTIN, TX – Former Court of C r i m i n a l Appeals Judge M o r r i s O v e rstreet has announced his endorsement of Keith Hampton for Presiding Judge of the Court of Criminal

"Keith is exactly what the Court needs right now," Overstreet said. "He has the intelligence, judicial temperament and integrity to mark a new day for the Court." Judge Overstreet was the first AfricanAmerican elected to a statewide office in Texas history when he became a Judge on the Court of Criminal Appeals. A former prosecutor and judge from Amarillo, Overstreet served the Court for eight years, during which he authored over five hundred opinions. "Keith Hampton will bring a depth and scope of scholarship and experience that will enrich the Court," Overstreet said. "And I have no doubt he will ensure intellectually honest opinions." Hampton is running against Judge S h a r o n K e l l e r, t h e i n c u m b e n t judge who was condemned by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct and punished with the largest fine in Texas history by the Texas Ethics Commission for her actions related to a death penalty case.

Conyers welcomes Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision against Voter ID Law (WASHINGTON)—The Pennsylvania Supreme Court, in a 4-2 decision, instructed a judge on the lower Commonwealth Court to cease implementation of the state’s Voter ID law and for the lower court to further review the case. Specifically, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court instructed the Commonwealth Court to determine whether or not the law disenfranchises voters, and to assess PAGE 7

the ease of access to ID cards. Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) released this s t a t e m e n t following the decision:

“I commend the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for calling into question the lower court’s findings on Voter ID laws, and for directing the lower court to reexamine the effect these laws have on the right to vote,” said Conyers. “The law as it stands places significant restrictions on the right to vote by imposing photo ID requirements. More troubling, the exceptions to photo ID favors gun owners and the employed, and excludes poor voters, unemployed voters, and even veterans who do not have the stricter forms of ID. Simply put, upholding this law would amount to voter suppression and a restriction of the franchise. “Fair and free elections, accessible to all, is a core principle for democracy in America. There is no more fundamental right than the right to vote, the bedrock of all of our rights under the Constitution. We are now at a crossroads; we can continue to expand the right to vote, as we have done since the historic passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, or we can retreat to a modern day version of poll taxes.”

Coalition says restrictions on voting rights have reached a state of emergency Millions of Seniors, Minorities, Youth and Veterans Could be Turned Away at the Polls Under New Laws WASHINGTON, DC -- A broad coalition of civil rights, social justice and faith-based organizations, and groups representing communities of color has declared a “state of emergency” on voting rights in the U.S. and said that millions of people could be disenfranchised by restrictive voter laws. As National Voter Registration Day approaches on September 25th the coalition—which includes groups representing African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans—are calling on their communities to take a few simple steps to ensure that all those who are eligible have what they need to fully participate in our democracy by voting: Check your registration status

Check the documentation needed to register and to vote Check the deadlines for registration and early/absentee voting Check your state voter laws Check your polling location and hours The coalition also is highlighting a number of community-specific resources to assist with voter registration and information: N A A C P – T h i s i s M y Vo t e www.thisismyvote.org/ National Congress of American Indians – 2012 Native Vote – Every Vote Counts www.nativevote.org/ National Council of La Raza – Mobilize t o Vo t e w w w. n c l r. o r g / r e g i s t e r www.nclr.org/challenge. Leading AfricanAmerican Pastors announce Support for Maryland Marriage Equality

SEPTEMBER 21, 2012

the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD, "The group of pastors that will assemble have a range of personal religious views and church practices as it relates to same sex marriage. Some perform same sex marriages and others do not. And yet, we stand united in the conviction that the role of the state is to protect the equal rights of all its citizens and should not codify discrimination as a matter of law and public policy." In February of this year, the Maryland State General Assembly passed the Civil Marriage Act that allows same sex couples to receive a civil marriage license. The law explicitly exempts religious institutions and clergy who do not affirm or perform same sex marriages if it is inconsistent with their beliefs and practices. According to Rev. Todd Yeary, Senior Pastor of the Douglas Memorial Community Church in Baltimore, "I can fully support the Civil Marriage Protection Act because it in no way forces any church to acknowledge or perform same sex marriages if it is incompatible with its beliefs. This is about protecting all families and ensuring that we have a society where everyone is treated equally as a matter of law without the imposition of religious dogma." This November, Maryland voters will be asked in a ballot referendum whether to support the Civil Marriage Protection Act. If passed, this would be the first time in the country a marriage equality law would pass through voter referendum. "We are urging Marylanders," said Coates, "to vote 'Yes' on Question 6, and to make sure all couples and their families are treated fairly and equally under the law." According to Coates, the Rev. Al Sharpton, President and CEO of the National Action Network, will join the group of prominent African-American pastors from Maryland and around the country attending and speaking at the event. Says Coates, "The impression that all African-American pastors are fundamentally opposed to the idea of marriage equality is wrong. This event will display just a small cohort of influential African-American clergy voices who support the issue of civil marriage protection for gay and lesbian couples."

WASHINGTON, -- On Friday, September 21 at 11 a.m., a coalition of prominent African-American pastors and clergy from around the country will hold a press conference at the National Press Club to announce their support for marriage equality legislation, and in particular, the Civil Marriage Protection Act in Maryland. The group will urge Marylanders to vote "Yes" on Question 6 of the Maryland ballot referendum. According to the group's convener, the Rev. Delman Coates, Senior Pastor of !

Preparation for Holy Matrimony starts in early years By Donald Lee I MESSENGER

Generally, people in unstable marriages or who get divorced come from backgrounds where their parents didn’t get along or they divorced. So they find themselves perpetuating a cycle of instability in marriage or a pattern of divorce. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that biblical yet practical principles of marriage be taught to children. When young people see their parents operating in the God kind of love toward one another and respecting the sanctity of marriage, they are more likely to end up in loving marriages, themselves, when they are old enough to start their own families. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it, reads Proverbs 22:6. “I found myself starting with my one and only son, DeJante ‘Dee-J’ Eaton, teaching him the principles of what the Word of God says concerning covenant relationship,” says Pastor Bre Eaton, my co-author in “Married to Commitment,” the powerful book on commitment. When children are reared in environments where they see their fathers honoring their mothers and their mothers reciprocating that love and honor, they see the attributes that most reflect the love of God. And children from single-parent homes can still learn what it takes to have a wholesome relationship that

leads to marriage rooted in the Lord. The parent who is in the home shares wisdom. Proverbs 31:1-3 says, The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. What, my son? And what, the son of my womb? And what, the son of my vows? Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. Scriptures continue in verses 10 through 12: Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. If a young man is going to know what to look for in terms of a young woman worthy of being his covenant partner, his wife, when he is old enough to marry, he needs to draw from the well of wisdom that comes from his parent or guardian. And if a young lady is going to know how to discern the one who best complements her, she must do likewise. Children who see their parents functioning in the spirit of love are far more likely to ultimately head households rooted in love. “The time is now to start teaching our children the basics about marriage,” Pastor Bre says. Pastor Donald Lee, founder of Kingdom Living Christian Center in Dallas, can be contacted at (225) 773-2248 or pastordonjlee@yahoo.com. Vi s i t www.christiancouplesconference.com for information on the quarterly relationships conference he holds with Christian counselor Dr. Aimee Colbert in the Fort Worth area.

we have 500,000 residents in Dallas County who are of voting age, but who are not registered to vote and that is a statistic we hope to change. To make registration easy and convenient for residents, they can visit any high school in Dallas County on National Voter Registration Day from 10:00am – 2:00pm to register.” This Dallas County event is one of many being done across the country. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus will be hosting similar events in their districts as a part of the "For the People" Voter Protection Initiative H. Res. 542 to bring attention to block the vote efforts, like restrictive voter ID laws, that may impede as many as 5 million people from registering to vote and/or casting a ballot this November. At least 34 states have introduced laws that would require voters to show photo identification in order to vote and at least 12 states have introduced laws that would require proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, to register to vote or to vote. The states that have already cut back on voting rights provide 171 electoral votes in 2012, 63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts has been named a 2012 Choreography Fellow by the Princess Grace Foundation. Moore Bridget Moore was commissioned to create a new work and nominated for the coveted award by Ann Williams, Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Founder and Artistic Director. “I had spoken with Bridget last year about a commissioned work for DBDT,” said Williams. “She seemed like a perfect fit, as an emerging artist, for this award.” The Princess Grace Foundation, celebrating its 30th anniversary in the U.S., grants only 25 gifts to emerging talent in the disciplines of theater, dance, choreography and film each year. The Foundation's mission, that mirrors Princess Grace's in Her lifetime, is to support emerging artists in theater, dance and film through the awarding of scholarships, apprenticeships and fellowships. Notable past recipients of the Princess Grace Award include: Robert Battle (Alvin Ailey), Drew Jacoby (Nederlands Dans Theater), and Gillian Murphy (American Ballet Theatre) and Nejla Y. Yatkin (independent artist). Moore will receive her award at an exclusive awards ceremony and gala October 22, 2012 in New York. Ms. Moore, a Dallas native, began her dance training at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (BTWHSPVA). She holds a BFA in dance from the Ohio State University and currently serves on the faculty of Booker T. Washington HSPVA. She has performed for many prestigious companies including Ronald K. Brown and EVIDENCE Dance Company. Ms. Moore was the first recipient of Project Next Generation, a commission to an emerging female choreographer by Urban Bush Women Dance Company. In addition, she was commissioned by the Maggie Allesse National Center for Choreography, in affiliation with Florida State University, to work with the Philadanco Dance Company in a creative residency. Moore recently received the 2012 Surdna Arts Teachers Fellowship and was featured in the July 2012 Teacher’s Tool section of Dance Teacher Magazine. “It is my aspiration to re-establish professional connections by building a continuous working relationship with Dallas Black Dance Theatre. As a native of Dallas, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the artistry and beauty of the prestigious dance company,” said Moore. “It is an understatement to say that it would be an honor to work with dancers of Dallas Black Dance Theatre, a company of artistic excellence and whose longevity spans over 35 years.” Moore will create a ballet based on the life of the great African American artist, Romare Bearden. Considered one of America’s most important and inventive artists by historians, Bearden grew up in the heart of the Harlem Renaissance and used that experience as the basis for most of his works. EDUCATION NOTES CHISD CHOIR BOOSTERS TO SERVE FOOTBALL PRE-GAME MEALS Benefits Choir Trip and CHHS Hall of Fame

April and Rahul Rai

Cedar Hill, TX. - The Cedar Hill ISD Choir Booster Club and the CHISD Athletic Department will host Longhorn Legacy Family Roundup dinners before each home football game this season in a joint fundraiser. Booster club volunteers will serve meals in the Cedar Hill High School cafeteria from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 (Duncanville), Oct. 19 (Grand Prairie), and Nov. 2 (Mansfield). Donations are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years old and under. Varsity Head Football Coach Joey McGuire will give Longhorn fans his scouting report on the opposing team at each roundup dinner. The Highsteppers Drill Team, the Choir and the marching band will also perform. Alumni classes prior to 1957, known as "Dogies," will be honored Sept. 28 on "Dogie Night" as special guests of the athletic department. The department has established an athletic hall of fame to honor former Longhorn athletes, coaches, teams and supporters who made a lasting impact on CHISD Athletics. The inaugural class of the Longhorn Legacy Hall of Fame will be inducted Oct. 20. A portion of the proceeds from the Longhorn Legacy Family Roundup dinners will go toward awards for the inductees, along with plaques that will hang in the David Milson Gymnasium foyer in a Legacy Hall of Fame display. "This is a way to bring the community together as a family and cheer our home team while supporting some school programs," explained Sonya Grass, president of the Choir Booster Club. Choir boosters plan to use their proceeds from the roundup dinners to fund a Cedar Hill High School Choir trip to Los Angeles in March 2013. Choir members will participate in music master classes at UCLA and CAL State-Long Beach. The choir will also record a soundtrack at Disney Studios.

The Buzzer Grill, a Cedar Hill restaurant that opened in July, will cater the roundup dinners. Rahul Rai and his wife April, a 2003 graduate of Cedar High School, own the restaurant with another family member. "We wanted to cater the food for this fundraising event at a discount price as a way to give back to the community," said April Rai, a Lockheed Martin software engineer. "I wanted to open the restaurant in Cedar Hill because I love the way the city has progressed." Tickets can be purchased the week of the game at the Cedar Hill High School Athletic Department and the Buzzer Grill, 1435 N. Highway 67, Cedar Hill, TX 75104.

SIGN UP NOW FOR FREE COLLEGE READINESS/ACCESS PROGRAM AT 22 DALLAS ISD HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS

DALLAS – Parents, do you want your child to go to college? Believing that every young person deserves the opportunity for a higher education, Education is Freedom (EIF) is now enrolling 9th through 12th-grade students in its college-readiness program, offered free of charge at 22 Dallas ISD high schools. Founded in 2002, EIF is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide free comprehensive college-planning services that produce life-changing results. With an expectation that all underserved students are capable of being prepared to enroll and succeed in college, EIF’s overall goals are to prevent low-income students from dropping out of high school and to provide a range of high-quality, collegepreparatory tools for students and families. In addition, EIF helps students leverage private and public scholarship funds, provides opportunities for summer intern experiences, and equips them with the necessary personal and professional skills to successfully complete college. “If you want your son or daughter to go to college but need help making it happen, then encourage your student to sign up for Education is Freedom,” said Marcia Page, President/CEO of Education is Freedom Dallas. “At EIF, we equip students – and parents – with the start-to-finish tools they need to prepare for college and navigate the complex application and financial-aid process."

She says the free services EIF provides are important because “current data shows that less than 5 percent of Dallas ISD 9th graders earn a college degree by their mid-20s.” EIF offers an array of programs – including monthly college-planning workshops, life-skill courses, academic recognition, college visits, parent outreach, scholarships and university partnership programs. EIF also employs full-time Higher Education Advisors (HEAs) at every high school campus to mentor, guide and support students through these activities. Moreover, because parents play a crucial role in getting students to college, numerous parent workshops are held in English and Spanish, throughout the year. EIF high school advisors work very closely with the Dallas ISD high school counselors to ensure that families are fully aware of their college and career options. Page adds that the EIF method already has helped thousands of students. In the 2011-2012 academic year, 6,174 9th-12th grade student enrolled in EIF. Of those 6,174, 2,671 were seniors. Of those seniors enrolled in EIF, 93 percent graduated from high school and 93 percent applied for college. To date, the EIF seniors accepted to college have been offered an estimated $ 25 million in renewable public, private and institutional scholarships. They were also offered $ 7.7 million in grants, loans and work-study for their first year of college. Participating high schools are W.H. Adamson, David W. Carter, Emmett J. Conrad, Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Thomas Jefferson, Justin F. Kimball, Lincoln, James Madison, Moisés E. Molina, North Dallas, Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, L.G. Pinkston, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Seagoville, Skyline, A. Maceo Smith New Tech, Irma Rangel, South Oak Cliff, H. Grady Spruce, Sunset, WilmerHutchins, and W. T. White. The program is free, and enrollment is open to anyone (9th through 12th grade) who desires assistance to graduate on time, enter college, and achieve academic success. Once enrolled, students and their parents/guardians sign an agreement that they commit to through graduation. That commitment requires them to complete the recommended state high school curriculum, attend life skills and personal development classes; work oneon-one with their Higher Education Advisor to customize a college plan; maintain a cumulative 80 GPA; take the SAT/ACT during their junior and senior years; and submit applications to at least four colleges and six scholarships during their senior year. Parents are encouraged to attend two workshops per year. At the high school level, EIF’s HEA operates a full-time office five days a

week on school campuses to help students with all college preparatory activities and navigate the path for higher learning. All HEAs hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Trained by EIF Staff and their University Partners, the HEA works one-on-one with students to develop a comprehensive customized strategy to help ensure they are prepared to enter and graduate from college. They assist with applications for admission, standardized testing, financial aid, and provide access to a wealth of scholarships and special programming. As role models and mentors to EIF students, the HEA is also responsible for reaching out to parents and guardians to emphasize and educate on the value of a formal education, and strengthen their knowledge of what it takes to enter and succeed in college. Since 2008, EIF has formed partnerships with The University of Texas at Austin, University of North Texas, University of North Texas at D a l l a s , Te x a s A & M U n i v e r s i t y Commerce, Jarvis Christian College and external scholarship organizations that have committed millions in merit-based scholarships exclusively for EIF students. Each university offers its own perks such as automatic enrollment or priority consideration for honor and scholar programs for eligible EIF students, plus a variety of collegetransition and enrichment programs, tutoring, mentoring, and retention programming for college students. In addition, EIF has implemented a college persistence program at Texas A&M University-Commerce and the University of North Texas where they will have an on-site EIF advisor on the respective college campuses to help EIF students overcome academic, social, and cultural challenges that generally cause students to drop out of school. Through these partnerships, EIF students will receive college success workshops, intentional advising, educational, leadership and life skill training, mentoring, tutoring assistance, peer group interactions, opportunities to interact with university faculty and staff, and parent outreach. Some reenrollment scholarships are available as well. Rising junior and senior high school students can apply for the Mayor Rawlings’ Intern Fellows Program for a chance to gain real-world experience during full- and part-time, eight-week, paid summer internship at some of Dallas’ top corporations, nonprofits, city departments, and legal firms. For more information or to enroll in Education is Freedom’s college-planning program, visit educationisfreedom.org, contact the EIF office or counseling office at participating schools, or call EIF at 214-432-8550.

Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) -Certified Dating & Relationship Coach and Matchmaker, Shay Williams has written her third book Value Your Vagina, a very different kind of self help book that teaches women how to date from a place of faith instead of fear while empowering women to value their minds, bodies and hearts when selecting the right man and attracting a healthy relationship. The book launch party will be held at The Studio Couture in Atlanta, GA 22 Bennett St. Atlanta, GA 30309 Thursday September 27th at 7PM. "During my experimental dating process in which I went on over 100 dates, I met lying, cheating and

disrespectful men. I even married a man who was already married but didn't tell me! The dating game sucked. I felt that there needed to be a change in the culture of dating, and I believed that it would have to start with women. When women raise their standards and demand better, the quantity of quality men would increase and men will step up by treating women with the respect they deserve. As a result, we would have more loving relationships and healthy marriages," said Williams.
