Much love to Jaguar Donald Carlyle Wade --a real HBCU alum! When I received the email announcing the passing of Donald Wade, I had to make a correction to the subject line. It read: “The Jaguar Nation mourns the loss of Donald Carlyle Wade.” My edit read, “More than the Jaguar Nation mourns the loss of Donald Carlyle Wade.” I met the dapper, charming Donald Wade about 25 years ago when we were establishing the Dallas Metroplex Council of Black Alumni Associations. Cheryl Smith He provided leadership and support, always willing to share his knowledge and resources. So many people benefitted from his efforts because he believed in lifting as he climbed. He loved Southern University but equally important, he loved all HBCUs! Mr. Wade’s alma mater issued the following statement: Southern University alumni across the globe are mourning the loss of longtime Southern University Alumni Director, Donald C. Wade. Wade passed away Thursday afternoon, September 27 at his home in Baton Rouge. "The name Donald C. Wade is and will always be synonymous with Southern University Alumni. Having served at every level of alumni participation -- chapter officer, chapter president, alumni director, national alumni president and alumni director emeritus -- he was truly a Southernite in all his endeavors. This is a great loss for the Jaguar Nation, but we are thankful to have known such a caring, dedicated and kind human being," said Dennis S. Brown, SU Alumni Federation President. Let us keep his wife, Beverly, family and dear friends in our thoughts and prayers. Remembering Mr. Wade caused me to reflect back on another Southern University alum, John Woods, who actually served as president of both the Dallas Metroplex Council and the Dallas Chapter of Southern University Alumni Federation. Additionally he was Alumni Affair Director for a short stint. If every HBCU had alums like Mr. Woods and Mr. Wade, our schools would be so strong financially that no matter how hard times became or how silly some legislators become, our schools would not be vulnerable. Which brings me to next weekend when the State Fair Classic will be held in Dallas--pitting Grambling State and Prairie View A&M Universities. Now thousands will show up for the game, but there will also be hundreds begging for free tickets! Do we actually think that we are benefiting the schools with the money we spend at the mall, restaurants or clubs--along with the numerous parties that we attend? We need to buy tickets and support our schools. It would be great if we could get more support and love shown for our HBCUs. If they were good enough for (fill in the blank), they are good enough for me and YOU! Are HBCUs good enough for you? If not, what can you do to make them better? That’s the challenge. At the very least, every HBCU alum, even if you only went for a semester, should be willing to make an annual contribution. And just like back in the day when parents and grandparents without an education paid to send others to school, give something. We need to do all we can to help educate this nation. We’re going to pay one way or the other, so we need to be proactive!
Cheryl

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Honey Boo Boo Child! By STEPHANIE RIVERS
First it was “Toddlers and Tiaras” a reality TV show about pint-sized pageant contestants. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, somebody at the TLC network decided to give the most outrageous tiara tot and her family their own show. It’s like when TV news crews show up in the neighborhood and interview people walking around outside wearing hair curlers with missing teeth: They have to know this is not the best representative, but its lights, camera, action nevertheless. Apparently TLC, previously known as The Learning Channel, is teaching viewers that ratings are more important than quality programming. That’s what I’ve concluded after seeing video promos of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Child,” --the name of their latest reality TV show offering. I can’t bring myself to watch a full episode. I only can watch in s m a l l servings. The show is named after the pudgy six-year old who has a pet pig, eats cheese puffs for breakfast and swigs something she calls “go-go juice” to boost her mood during pageant events. All this is done under the watchful eye of her mother. Let’s just say the family resemblance is apparent. Every family member has a nickname, they feed Mountain Dew to a one-month old infant, they bob for pig’s feet instead of apples, but they don’t seem to value books or visits to the library. Honey Boo Boo, whose birth name is Alana Thompson, probably has more pageant trophies than she knows how to count, but she proudly proclaims that “a dollar makes me holler!” It’s another trait she picked up from her mother whose nickname is “the coupon queen.” Their home looks like a mini Sam’s Wholesale. Nobody needs that much toilet tissue and deodorant except a convenience store! If you ever wondered how rural White America lives, this is the show for you. The trouble is, I don’t think this family realizes that people are laughing at them – not with them and I don’t think they care either way. Possibly after a few episodes Honey Boo Boo’s parents will realize any self-esteem boost she gets from pageant competition could be destroyed when she looks back at her “reality” a few years from now. They better redneck-cognize before it’s too late. Steffanie is a freelance journalist living in the Dallas, Texas metroplex. Send comments, questions and speaking requests to teamtcb.tcb@gmail.com. GIDDINGS: Addressing the ability to afford higher education Last month many students returned to college, while others entered college for the first time. A large number had a different Rep. Helen experience. Giddings Sadly many students dropped out and others were denied the excitement of the first day of college because of the inability to pay. Unfortunately rising tuition has priced many middle class students out of college. In the aftermath, the U.S. has dropped to rank 12th in the percentage of college graduates compared to other countries. Every student who wants to go to college should be able to do so if they are willing to put together the funding through some combination of working, savings, grants, financial aid and student loans. It is not uncommon today for students to work three jobs, causing many to miss the “ideal” of graduating in 4 or 5 years. In March of 2012, President Barack Obama signed into law student loan legislation that was upheld by the Supreme Court in June 2012. This legislation provides students with some relief regarding their repayment options. The new legislation changed the repayment plan options by putting in place an “income based repayment plan” that limits the borrowers payment obligation to 10% of their monthly income. As President Bill Clinton explained recently, some graduates who might want to take a job as a teacher or police officer may be better able to do so. Additionally, under the new legislation debt forgiveness has been lowered to 20 years. These may seem like small
changes, however for a college graduate first entering the workforce, the ability to have their repayment based on how much they actually earn will be a huge relief. Prior to this legislation, private banks provided the student loans, and in turn the federal government would pay these banks a fee for providing and managing the loan. This legislation cut out the middle man, and by doing so freed up $68 billion
over the next 11 years. This money will be used for the Pell grant program which provides grants to the neediest students attending an institution of higher education. Over the last few years students graduate with a degree, but many come to realize they left college with a mountain of debt. The bad economy and tough job market have made it difficult for those newly graduated students to find employment in their field of expertise. Consequently they are not generating the income they need to cover their living expenses with the addition of their student loan payment. The subsequent effect was some students made the decision to drop out of college because they
could not see how they would be able to pay the debt they were taking on. Facing $50,000 in debt upon graduation is a difficult and dismal way to begin life after college. To further illustrate the need for some relief would be to recognize that Americans have had the notorious distinction of carrying a significant amount of credit card debt. However the tides are turning, and at nearly $1 trillion, student loans now exceed the US creditcard debt for the first time in history. This is why I am supportive of making these adjustments. They will help those who worked hard to achieve the dream of a higher education and are now entering the workforce as an educated employee. Now, these young people have the ability to have their student loan repayments determined by their income level which will change the way future students make their career decisions. The Department of Education announced that Texas would receive over $20 million in grants to historically Black colleges and universities. This grant money will go towards advancing these universities as well as helping students who face financial challenges. Although there is more work to be done, the 2012 student loan legislation as well as the grant money are two steps that will have a significant impact as it relates to the affordability of higher education. R "W O"E Y" S C" T E ROYCE WEST is one of the most powerful men in not only the state of Texas, but across the U.S. His influence is far reaching, even across the waters to other continents. As he celebrates another milestone in his life--turning 60 years old, he continues to show why he is the epitome of service and commitment. Next year he will have served 20 years as a Texas State senator, representing Dallas. It is an understatement to say he has led an impressive life-- the young man who has continued to lift as he climbs. Ella Goode Johnson and her husband, Willie Earl, have known Sen. West for years. She had nothing but kind words for him, and not just because he and Willie Earl are fraternity brothers or that the two men share the same birth date,
Carol West looks on as Judge Sam Lindsay swears the Senator in as Governor for A Day!
September 26. “Among the qualities of identifying effective leaders is having the ability to connect with people,” said Ms. Johnson, who is a former two-term president of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and very active community servant. “Senator West has championed that quality both personally and professionally. “ This managing partner of West & Associates L.L.P., he was admitted to the State of Bar of Texas in 1979 after receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Juris Doctor from the University of Houston in 1979. In college, he was a student athlete, scholar and leader. His legal experience includes serving in the trial division of both the Dallas and Harris counties District Attorney’s Office and private practice since 1986. He served as a Chief Felony Prosecutor at the Dallas County DA Office and he has been a senior partner in the Firm since its inception. Admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of Texas, the Supreme PAGE 7

Court of the United States of America, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Sen. West is also a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the State Bar of Texas corporate and education law sections, the National Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, and the J.L. Turner Legal Association. As a member of the Texas State Senate Atty. West has served on the Finance, Education, State Affairs, Intergovernmental Relations, Health and Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Jurisprudence committees. He currently is the Chairman of the Senate SubCommittee on Higher Education, and Vice Chairman of the Education Committee. The senator is an active member of Good Street Baptist Church and serves as Vice President for the Board of Directors for Circle Ten Council of Boy Scouts of America. A proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sen. West’s bio does not speak to the enormous good that he has done over the years. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins had his eye on Sen. West for years. He often recalls when prior to running for the senate, Mr. West made an unsuccessful bid for District Attorney. “Thanks for being a mentor and example to all aspiring elected officials,” said Mr. Watkins as he offered birthday greetings. “You certainly were a mentor to me, and for that I will always be grateful.”’ A long-time member of Good Street Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon, Sen. West is surrounded by family members who are equally involved and committed. He is married to businesswoman Carol Richard West and oftentimes when his demanding schedule has him crisscrossing the city or state, he can count on Carol, his Chief of Staff Lajuana Barton, his son Royce Jr., to step up and represent. And if they are already on the job, he has a bench that is the envy of many, with veteran designated hitters like Teresa, Kelvin, Myrtis, Joycelyn and others who work tirelessly to assist him in his capacity as senator or attorney-at-law. Family is very important to the Senator and you also won’t find his mother, or his children too far away from him. That family has grown exponentially because of Sen. West’s benevolence! Atty. Cheryl Wattley, who is currently an associate professor at OU, had a lot to say about her colleague and friend, “As I
thought back over the years to write this comment, I realized that I have known Royce for almost 30 years. We started together as young lawyers, filled with energy and excitement about practicing law, about making a difference. And yet, it seems like yesterday for Royce has that same enthusiasm and energy, only now he has so many more projects and directions to demand his attention. In reflecting on decades of work and achievement, the one aspect of Royce’s many accomplishments and achievements that I will always value is his determination that African American children will have the opportunity for excellence in education. I can still hear his voice after the decision in Hopwood knocking down the admissions policy at the University of Texas saying, ‘we’ve got to do something; we’ve got to figure out a way that our kids can get a UT education.’” She continued, “And for Royce, all African American children are ‘his kids.’ The establishment of the Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Academy stands as testimony to not only that interest and commitment but a vision. What better way to marry honoring the work of a force with the African American community, Dr. Conrad, with the future. And that is Royce, blending our history and legacy with opportunities for our children to reach for the stars. Thank you Royce, for 30 years of friendship, for the impact that you have had on our community, and for always having African American children in your heart.” A family man, Sen. West began the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program and thousands of students from District 23 have participated in this outstanding program that not only provides paid internship opportunities but also provides life skills programming to assist college students with being better prepared to excel in not just the workplace, but in the community. While many are totally unaware of the duties of a state senator, it is important to understand that starting a program to provide jobs for his constituents, is not something mandated by the Texas Senate. If it were, more would be duplicating his efforts, but that is not the case! And the students who participate not only get a crash case in so many areas, from etiquette, job preparedness and grooming, to the importance of community service and volunteerism. The program is so strong that participants started an alumni association! This is just one example of !
SEPTEMBER 28, 2012
the impact and influence of Sen. West’s works over the years. Former award-winning television anchor and reporter Ramona Logan said, “Senator Royce West has been a formidable force since he went to the State Capitol. He is one of a few state senators who truly works for the good of all people. He has been able to get things done because he understands how to utilize input from people of different perspectives. The mere fact that he was able to get UNT-Dallas in southern Dallas shows the sheer magnitude of his ability to mobilize different factions for the greater good of the community.” Now a best-selling author, image and media consultant,Ms. Logan also praised the Senator for the work he does year round. “He is definitely an advocate for education especially with the Emmett J. Conrad Internship Program he started to provide internship opportunities for young people,” she said. “And on top of that he has a Heart of Gold!” Radio personality and businessman Willis Johnson is a longtime friend of Senator West and he spoke fondly of his former co-worker.“I met ‘Royce’ in 1976 when we both worked at KKDA. Royce was a weekend sports announcer and t h a t ’s w h e r e w e d e v e l o p e d o u r friendship….long before he was Senator West. Our kids were friends over the years, in fact Trecia dated Royce Jr. 20 years ago and Royce Jr. and ReMarcus became golfing buddies with BJ in the last 5 years. BJ and Royce Jr still are today. So it’s more than a friendship that I have had with Senator West. He has been my friend and family member.” Mr. Johnson went on to speak about the Senator’s servant leadership. “Of course he has been one of the greatest community leader/elected official that Dallas has ever had,” said Mr. Johnson “The Conrad program speaks volumes about his commitment to education and his support of Paul Quinn College and UNT Dallas is unmatched. Finally the 10% rule that was put in legislation is just another example of what had been delivered and not just talked about by Royce West.Glad to call him my friend.” And the Senator has been a friend to many. Highly regarded and respected,at the youthful age of 60, there doesn’t seem to be a hint of slowing down. His law practice is thriving and as he prepares for another session in Austin that hopefully will be more productive and not falling victim to partisan politics, the Senator is always optimistic and prepared. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t had any significant opposition in almost two decades! !

Oct. 6 conference in Haltom City set; seducing spirits in teen By Donald Lee I MESSENGER
I ask everyone who reads this column today, other pastors included, to try and make it on Oct. 6, a Saturday, to the Christian Couples Conference that my good friend Dr. Aimee (pronounced I-may) Colbert and I hold quarterly at Grace Church in Haltom City, just north of
Fort Worth. Our guest speaker for this, our second daylong conference, will be Bishop Lynn Morrison Jr., the spiritual covering for my ministry. Bishop Morrison, senior pastor of Word of Faith Christian Church in Baton Rouge, La., will do two teachings at the conference. His teaching during our morning session will be on “Teen Dating,” and the impact that seducing spirits have on it. His second teaching, during the afternoon session, will be on “Fireproofing Your Marriage.” Needless to say, we’re believing God that married couples and adult singles as well as divorcees will be in attendance. Also, we’d like to see teens in attendance. So, if you’re a pastor or you head any youth group, we’re asking that you come, and by all means, bring your youth. What Bishop Morrison, who has been married to his wife, JoAnn, for the past 40 years, will discuss will have a profound impact on those in attendance. And with many marriages ending in divorce or being on the verge of divorce, we see a great need for such
PAGE 8
!
conferences. The best way to combat the spirits that lead to divorce and those that lead to teen sex and the consequences that result from it is to lay down the foundation for wholesome homes. We believe that sharing the biblically based, yet practical, principles that lead to changed Bishop Lynn Morrison Jr. attitudes toward self and relationships, in general, will turn these problems around significantly. "The purpose of the conference is to help each individual, married or not, to increase his or her emotional intelligence and self-awareness," says Colbert, an evangelist, faith-based counselor and author of the upcoming book "Reality Check: Relationships". "I hope that attendees come to a better understanding of themselves, get answers and go forward with a passion to change and a new perspective on love." The conference will be at Grace Church, 4740 Western Center Blvd., in Haltom City. "It's not only for couples. It's for couples and anyone seeking to be married some day, and it's free," Colbert says of the conference. The idea is to reinforce the need for individuals to understand themselves, to have a healthy appreciation of their own self-worth and discern whether someone else has the wholesome spirit that is needed to best complement them. Strong relationships are built on wisdom and humility. And they thrive when those entering into them have genuine, sincere hearts rooted in the spirit of giving.
When someone approaches a relationship with the mindset of seeing what they can add to that relationship to help make the other person's life better, that produces a powerful connection, one that reflects the attributes of God. But when someone enters into a relationship with a "gimme" attitude, always seeking to make withdrawals from the other person's heart and rarely (if ever) making deposits, then that not only strains the relationship, but it gradually tears down the other person. So, we want to stress that people have a healthy attitude toward themselves. A person can't be sufficiently good to someone else if he (or she) has a negative view of himself (or herself). the Committee, introduced the Athlete Due Process Protection Act of 2012, a bipartisan bill that will strengthen the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) ability to ensure a fair playing field in sports. Sensenbrenner: “I am introducing the Athlete Due Process Protection Act to ensure our athletes are provided constitutional due process protections, just like the rest of us. As USADA undertakes its critical work to ensure drug-free and fair competition, we also protect the integrity of sports by ensuring our American athletes are provided their full due process rights. This legislation will strengthen our national commitment to a fair playing field for all our American athletes in sports.” Conyers: “Today I am pleased to cosponsor the Athlete Due Process Protection Act of 2012, legislation to ensure that our American athletes – just like every other U.S. citizen – is accorded the full measure of due process constitutional protections when issues arise surrounding the important drug testing functions of USADA. Ensuring that our athletes compete vigorously but drug-free is a shared value of all in this body and all Americans as promoting the integrity of sports competition. But no less critical in ensuring the integrity of sports competition is the protection of individual athletes’ due process rights or adjudication surrounding testing results.” The Act ensures that all athletes are (1) served with written specific charges, (2) given a reasonable time to prepare

their defense, and (3) afforded a full and fair hearing. It also creates new reporting requirements. USADA must provide Congress with an annual report summarizing its enforcement activities and must provide Congress with written notice when it amends its rules. In Justin Gatlin vs. USADA, et. al., a United States District Court agreed with athlete Justin Gatlin that USADA was violating Gatlin’s rights under the Americans with Disability Act. Nonetheless, the court found that it was powerless to protect his rights. The court wrote, “the result of this determination is quite troubling because Mr. Gatlin is being wronged, and the United States Courts have no power to right the wrong perpetrated upon one of its citizens.”

amille Bradfield Close your eyes. Imagine that you are a single mother working two low-paying jobs, barely making ends meet. Your young daughter has a learning difference and your only option to educate her is the failing neighborhood inner city school that provides absolutely no services or support for children who learn differently. Private school tuition is unthinkable in your world. Securing one of the coveted, albeit rare, openings in one of the premiere, tuition-free charter schools is solely based on the luck of the draw, and as fate would have it, after waiting anxiously with hundreds of other hopeful parents, you’re not that lucky. Open your eyes. Now ask yourself, what would you do? This is the premise for 20th Century Fox’s latest theatrical release, WON’T BACK DOWN. Directed by Daniel Barnz and written by Barnz and Brin Hill, WON’T BACK DOWN stars A c a d e m y Aw a r d - n o m i n a t e d Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jamie Fitzpatrick, a spirited, 30something, working class single mother who is fed up with her daughter’s failing school, and A c a d e m y Aw a r d - n o m i n a t e d actress Viola Davis as Nona Alberts, a fellow concerned mother and dedicated teacher who desires to teach at a school where educating children is the top priority. Inspired by real life events, this film tells the story of two mothers from opposite sides of the railroad tracks who unite for a common goal — to achieve a legal takeover of a failing elementary school and transform it into a successful learning facility. Set in Pittsburgh, the drama begins when Jamie attempts to have her daughter, Malia (Emily Alyn Lind), removed from her current class after observing the t e a c h e r ’s e q u a l - o p p o r t u n i t y indifference toward her students. To add insult to injury, Malia has a learning difference and her school does not provide any special programs to address the issue. So what should be simple assignments, like reading aloud, are instead colossal challenges for the shy and understandably frustrated second grader. Jamie faces one disappointment after another as she attempts first to get Malia transferred to Nona’s class, then to land one of only a few spots at a highly-regarded charter school — the same school ironically, that Nona, who has a troubled son of her own, is trying PAGE 10

to get her child into. Just when all hope seems lost, Jamie crosses paths with an administrative assistant at the school board who after being buttered up by Jamie, spills the beans about a not so widely known loophole that gives parents the authority to takeover a failing school. However, it is a grueling process and so far no one has ever been successful cutting through all of the bureaucratic red tape to actually be granted takeover rights. Well, they have obviously never met Jamie Fitzpatrick. Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Jamie has the same raw charm and likability as Julia Roberts’ Erin Brockovich, minus the abrasiveness. Her confidence and unwillingness to back down makes y o u w a n t t o r o o t f o r h e r. Likewise, Davis’ character, Nona, is one of only a few dedicated teachers at John Adams School who are actually there because they love teaching children. Unlike many of her tenured colleagues who could care less about educating the students and in fact are merely counting down the days until they collect their pension, Nona is equally fed up with the status quo that is the local education system and is intrigued by the idea of improving the school. However, Nona, who too is protected by the teachers’ union, is hesitant to stick her neck out for something that may or may not come to fruition. Plus, she is haunted by her past and appears to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders as she tries to balance the issues at her job with a troubled son and deteriorating marriage. After some major coaxing by Jamie, Nona joins in the school takeover mission and together they beat the pavement and the school hallways, seeking the parental support and teacher buy-in necessary for a petition. They also draft the 400-page required document to request a hearing before the school board. Along the way, the teachers’ union attempts to smear Nona’s reputation which forces her to deal with her past, and Jamie is offered a tempting
bribe in the form of a scholarship for Malia to attend a private school that caters to children with learning differences. Supporting performances by fellow Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter who plays union representative Evelyn Riske; Oscar Isaac, who plays music teacher/ Jamie’s love interest Michael Perry; Rosie Perez who plays fellow teacher and Nona’s friend Breena Harper; Lance Reddick as Nona’s husband Charles Alberts; Dante Brown as Nona’s son Cody Alberts and Emily Lind (Malia) round out the talented primary cast. In addition, veteran actors Bill Nunn and Ving Rhames both play school principals in the film along with Marianne Jean-Baptiste who plays the head of the school board. This inspiring film takes you on an empathetic journey as these two change agents set out to demonstrate the importance of educating children properly. It also mirrors some of the exact same issues Americans are faced with in today’s declining economy — an underfunded public education system and an influx of teachers who chose the education field because of summers off and the retirement plan or because they were laid off from their corporate job and could not find work in their respective fields, not because they love children and have a yearning to teach and shape young minds. At a minimum, it will be interesting to see if this film stirs real-world parents enough to revive the education reform debate or just leave moviegoers with a warm and fuzzy way-to-go-butthat-doesn’t-apply-to-me attitude as these types of based-on-a-true story dramas often do. WON’T BACK DOWN, rated PG (for thematic elements and language) opened in theaters nationwide September 28, 2012. Inspiring! Four and a half reels (out of five)

A Healthy You Parkland joins effort to increase breastfeeding rates in U.S. hospitals Selected as part of exclusive group of hospitals transforming maternity care services DALLAS – Parkland Health & Hospital System has been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its kind national effort to improve breastfeeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest. transform their maternity care services in pursuit of “BabyFriendly” designation. “For women who plan to breastfeed, the hospital experience strongly influences a mother’s ability to start and continue breastfeeding,” said Anne Tudhope, Vice President of Nursing for Parkland’s Women and Infants’ Specialty Health. “We already took the first step toward mother and baby bonding last year with our Rooming-In program, which allows mothers and babies to spend as much time together as possible while in the hospital. This is one of the many ways to ensure that mothers delivering at Parkland who intend to breastfeed are fully supported.” Although breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health measures for infants and mothers, half of U.S.-born babies are given formula within the first week, and by 9 months, only 31

First Sunday’s Talent Showcase occurs the first Sunday of every month and features clean comedians, poets, and musicians as well as live entertainment. J. Poww was one of the lead singers of U.N.V. — the first urban act to sign on Madonna’s Maverick/Warner Bros label. J. Poww made his writing debut with “Something’s Goin’ On,” which went number one and topped the Billboard Charts for nine straight weeks. J. Poww’s first R&B solo album, J. Poww The Headliner, sold over 85,000 units and featured hits such as “Fall in Love All Over Again” featuring Q. Parker of 112 and “Who You Gone Believe” written by the late great Gerald Levert. He followed strong with his sophomore album, Journey of a Man, and a Hip-Hop album, Split Personality, shortly after. J.Poww continues be the Ambassador of R&B with his latest project, Where Is the Love, which sets out to address the dilemma that faces R&B music today. Each song on the album tells a sincere tale about love and lost; filling the void that’s missing in R&B. percent of babies are breastfeeding at all. Best Fed Beginnings seeks to reverse these trends by dramatically increasing the number of U.S. hospitals implementing a proven model for maternity services that better supports a new mother’s choice to breastfeed. This designation verifies that a hospital has implemented the American Academy of Pediatricsendorsed “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” as established in the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital initiative. Some of the steps include informing all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding, helping them initiate it within an hour of birth, showing moms how to breastfeed and maintain lactation even when separated from infants and encouraging unrestricted breastfeeding. Breastfeeding rates are higher and disparities in these rates are virtually eliminated in hospitals that achieve this status. !
“We look forward to working with Parkland and congratulate them on their successful application,” said Charlie Homer, MD, MPH, President and CEO of the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality. “The large number of applications we received affirms the commitment of hospitals across our country to be part of a health care system that truly focuses on promoting health for women and infants.” Breastfeeding has multiple health benefits for infants and mothers. For infants, it decreases the incidence and severity of many infectious diseases, reduces infant mortality and supports neurodevelopment optimally. It also decreases infants’ risk of becoming obese later in childhood. For mothers, breastfeeding decreases the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease. !

Action-packed thrill ride. Check. Futuristic, sci-fi, time travel plot. Check. Well-written screenplay. Check. One veteran Hollywood actor. Check. One young, rising star. Check. Impressive cinematography. Check. Mix these ingredients together and the result is a feature film that is sure to be a major box office hit. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Looper, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, opens in theaters nationwide on September 28, 2012. Fresh off his summer blockbuster success as a crime-fighting ally to the caped crusader in The Dark Knight Rises, Gordon-Levitt plays Joe – a hitman or “looper hired to get rid of those who are unwanted by the mob. The gangsters send their targets 30 years into the past where a “looper, like Joe, is waiting to take them out. This is executed through the use of time travel, which is illegal in the future and only available on the black market. Joe appears to be
living the life – young and single with all of the money, women and parties he can stand – until the mob decides to “close his loop (their version of a pink slip) by transporting Joe’s future self (played by Willis) back for assassination. When Joe recognizes his future self and realizes his loop is being closed, his hesitance creates a window of opportunity for future Joe to escape and the chase begins. Even though there are no rules with time travel, director Rian Johnson, a favorite in the independent film circles, does a commendable job executing a time travel plot that the audience can actually follow without getting dizzy or losing track of the story. Unlike some other time travel films that tend to bounce back and forth between the present and future (or past) often confusing viewers, Johnson takes moviegoers on one smooth, progressive ride into Joe’s future that provides the background for Willis’ character. From that point on, with the exception of a few flashback memories for future Joe, the rest of the film remains in the present. Gordon-Levitt, who thanks to three hours a day in a make-up chair is unrecognizable in a halfway successful attempt to make his physical appearance resemble that of a young Bruce Willis, delivers a solid performance as Joe — a

Phi Beta Sigma announces New AntiHazing Sensitivity Curriculum
Jimmy Hammock Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
NEW YORK, Members of Greek organizations as well as high school and college students who are considering joining a fraternity or sorority will now be able to get sensitivity training thanks to a new collaboration between Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Converge & Associates Consulting, a firm which specializes in race and ethnic relations consulting and Cultural Competency Training. "Let's not beat the life out of a beautiful legacy," is the theme of a national campaign launched by Phi Beta Sigma and National Action Network, one of the country's leading civil rights organizations. The groups formed a national coalition of civic organizations, academic institutions, politicians and concerned citizens to stand together to denounce and stop the culture of hazing. The coalition has also joined forces with Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (DFla.) in support of her efforts to promote federal anti-hazing legislation. An anti-hazing curriculum has been designed to be taught by trained sensitivity instructors from within the coalition to high school and college students all around the country, and beyond. "We no longer can treat pledging and hazing as a series of isolated and unrelated set of unfortunate incidences," says Jimmy Hammock, International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. "Phi Beta Sigma has started a movement that will eliminate the culture of hazing.
At the end of the day, Sigma's main objective is to be the leader in destroying this culture, not only within the African American community, but also within the mainstream community." The anti-hazing sensitivity training curriculum includes a 30-page facilitator guide, a 30-page participant guide along and a 60-minute video presentation that will be used to train members of Greek organizations. The goal is to then take this training into schools, colleges and the community at large with three goals in mind: 1) to teach potential organization members the proper way to conduct membership intake programs, which are educational and free of activities that may encourage hazing, 2) to teach potential initiates how to spot activities that constitute hazing, how to report those activities and to whom such activities should be reported, and 3) to distribute hazing awareness materials, intended to alert families about the dangers of hazing, tell them what they can do to protect family members and to support efforts of colleges and other organizations wanting to eradicate the culture of hazing in their respective settings. These curriculum materials are currently available at no charge to all organizations through the Phi Beta Sigma website at www.pbs1914.org Jonathan A. Mason, Sr., International First Vice President and Task Force Chairman, says, "Phi Beta Sigma has taken the time to produce these antihazing sensitivity training materials for our chapters and for other organizations that are committed to ending the culture of hazing. We are encouraging you to download them today and get prepared to conduct training in your local communities." For organizations interested in joining this coalition or for more information on Phi Beta Sigma's Anti-Hazing Campaign, please visit www.pbs1914.org. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African American male students who wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization that includes the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and the Sigma Beta Club Foundation.
U.S. ARMY and Thurgood Marshall College Fund partner to promote
educational opportunities Alexandria, VA (BlackNews.com) -- The U.S. Army has formed a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to help ensure AfricanAmerican students capitalize on the significant scholarship, leadership development and career opportunities available through the U.S. Army's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). As one of the nation's largest providers of college scholarships, the U.S. Army has provided more than $10 million to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Further, the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has formed education partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) to provide research programs and internships that address the projected shortfall of scientists and engineers among diverse communities. The Army's partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will help promote the Army's educational benefits to students, administrators, faculty and community leaders. TMCF supports and represents nearly 300,000 students attending its 47 member-schools that include public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), medical and law schools. The partnership also supports both organizations' mission to help prepare and train the next generation of leaders, whether as soldiers or civilians, with a particular focus in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related fields. High-earning STEM careers are projected to grow by 29
SEPTEMBER 28, 2012
percent between 2010 and 2020. However, the percentage of AfricanAmericans earning STEM degrees has fallen during the last decade, with less than seven percent of bachelor's degrees, four percent of master's degrees, and two percent of PhDs in STEM being awarded to African-Americans, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Among the reasons cited for this decline is the high cost of completing a college education. The Army-TMCF partnership seeks to address this by attracting high-achieving students (a 3.7 high school cumulative GPA; minimum scores of 1260 SAT and 27 ACT, and; a varsity letter winner or equivalent athletic achievement) to apply for two-, three- or four-year Army ROTC scholarships. Initial outreach will begin in New York, Los Angeles, Richmond and Petersburg, Va. in the fall term of the 2012 school year. "TMCF is excited, during its 25th anniversary celebratory year, to join forces with the U.S. Army to identify the best and brightest African-American high school students who can, with the financial and leadership development assistance provided through the Army ROTC, create the next generation of military officer leaders," said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The Army offers valuable career and education opportunities as well as hightech and leadership training for young adults. Army's education and career opportunities are a premier pathway to obtain higher education, leadership training and career opportunities. To learn about and apply for Army ROTC scholarships, please visit www.goarmy.com/rotc. In our library African American female photographer -finalist in competition -- Winner wi" inspire a movie co-directed by Ron Howard -
Courtney says she first developed an appreciation for the power of photography as a child while reading a book entitled, "The Torch is Passed", by Saul Pett. It chronicled the pivotal events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. "To this day, I can't tell you what was written in the book, it was far too advanced for my reading level then. But those images, the pictures in the book told the story so completely that I didn’t

Courtney E's photo entitled "Boys Walking" Providence, RI (BlackNews.com) -Emerging African American photographic artist Courtney E has always loved a good story. An avid reader, she couldn’t resist when a call for photographs was issued for a competition that teams Canon and major motion picture actor/director Ron Howard together. This competition, entitled "Project Imaginat10n" invites participants to submit photos that adhere to 10 storytelling elements called Themes. The photographs were then judged by Canon, Ron Howard, and community voting. From this year's many thousands of entries, only 30 were selected as Finalists in each category for the first phase of the competition. The public will now decide on 7 of the 30 finalists to become winners and Ron Howard himself will choose and additional 3 Finalists to make the number an even 10 winners for each Theme. need to read. I was so moved by them that, even as a child, I understood the great loss Kennedy's death represented for our country and I was saddened by it. Photography has a way of doing that, of capturing moments in time, and allowing us all to experience them through time and space. Photography is timeless," she says. Last year, over 100,000 photographers submitted photos and of those, eight were selected to influence award-winning short film "When You Find Me" directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of Ron Howard. This year the winning photos will inspire short films directed by a stellar cast of celebrities. Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, Georgina Chapman, James Murphy and Biz Stone have already signed up for the project and will be mentored through the directorial process by Ron Howard.
UNTOLD: The New Orleans 9th Ward You Never Knew (www.HurricaneKatrinaStories.com) by Dallas area author and New Orleans native Lynette Norris Wilkinson, is nominated to receive the prestigious "Henri" Christian Literary Award. The Henri will be presented to authors in nine categories representing faith based books under the genre of Christian literature. UNTOLD captures the riveting true stories of 16 Hurricane Katrina survivors from the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, an area devastated by the storm and the community where the author grew up. In telling their stories the survivors, who range in ages from 8 to 80, share their faith, struggle, history and love of community in a work that sheds light on a very dark time in our nation's history. "While many books have been

written about Hurricane Katrina," says Wilkinson, "very few focus on the Lower 9th Ward. If you want to know the real story behind the faces and images you saw during Hurricane Katrina, you will want to read UNTOLD." Proceeds from her Godinspired book will be donated to an organization helping residents recover. As a nominee for the Henri award, UNTOLD is also eligible to earn the Reader's Choice award. Fans can show their support and vote for UNTOLD at www.awards.joyandcompany.org. Log in, click 2012 Awards, select
Reader's Choice, and cast your vote for UNTOLD in the non-fiction category. Awards will be presented at the 2012 Christian Literary Awards, November 3, 2012, in the Grand Amphitheater, Mt. Olive Church of Plano, Plano, TX. The VIP Reception and Red Carpet begin at 4 p.m., and the Awards celebration begins at 6 p.m. Ticket info at www.awards.joyandcompany.org. The event is sponsored by Joy & Company www.joyandcompany.org. The Henri award nomination is the latest in a string of accolades for UNTOLD. The book was named 2010 Book of the Year by the Sankofa Literary Society and a finalist in the African American category of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
