The Eddie Robinson Experience Over the years I have heard numerous stories about the great Eddie G. Robinson, long-time coach of the Grambling State University Tigers. I had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with him several times prior to his death five years ago. He was always charming, focused and on top of his game. Affectionately called “Coach Rob,” he was passionate about family, Grambling State University, football, HBCUs and building character in black men while helping them to obtain a college degree. Cheryl Smith A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Coach Rob is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I football. He had a long and impressive reign, from 1941 to 1997, as the head coach at Grambling State University. I have been fortunate to have interviewed two of the greatest coaches/men in my lifetime -- Coach Eddie Robinson and Coach A.S. “Jake” Gaither (of FAMU ). Neither man was lacking in character. I used to love to paraphrase a statement Coach Gaither made about the men who played for him, by saying that I too “like my men agile, mobile and hostile!” I have listened to NFL greats like Bob Hayes, Doug Williams and Everson Walls talking about what it was like to play for those two giants, and I have actually found myself wishing I could have played football! Then too, his reach expanded past the gridiron because he even coached the female basketball team and he was also a college professor. I am sure he shared plenty of valuable lessons with the females too! Earlier this week, I visited with the head coaches of Grambling and Prairie View -- Doug Williams and Heishma Northern. In Dallas to hype the upcoming State Fair Classic, the two are continuing in the tradition of coaches like Gaither and Robinson -- focusing on not just Coaches Heishma Northern and Doug Williams. what their players do on the field, but teaching life lessons and building character. To top everything off this week, Eddie Robinson, Jr. was in attendance and will be at the game. It was great to hear the love expressed for his father -- someone who exuded such strength and did not tolerate incompetence, laziness, disrespect or trifling behavior. Coach Rob’s actions and lessons commanded respect and encouraged you to give and do your best. It was probably tough at home! I observed the same characteristics in Coaches Northern and Williams. The two talked about their families, their schools, faith and a number of other issues that let me know that the young men who attend PV and GSU with the expectation of playing football will learn so much more. Coach Williams is a graduate of GSU and had the privilege of playing under Coach Rob. Coach Northern is from Southern University, another HBCU powerhouse. So they know the deal! No other coach will probably reach or exceed that magical number of 408 wins. Equally important to me is the number of men and families that have benefited from the Eddie G. Robinson experience. The number of wins Coach Rob had in life, far exceed those on the gridiron. Coach Rob reminded me of my father. Every young girl and boy won’t have the benefit of a daddy in the home so it is great to have someone around who can have a positive impact, without some off the chain momma saying, “you can’t say that to my chile!” Children don’t need their parents or the parents of their friends to teach them all the negative ills of society. Instead they can teach them how to deal, cope, bypass and overcome those ills and become successful in life. Coach Rob was a winner on and off the field. Where are you winning?

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Greatness vs. Gratitude By Aaron Hopkins

“A people may become great through many means, but there is only one measure by which its greatness is recognized and acknowledged. The final measure of the greatness of all peoples is the amount and standard of the literature and art they have produced.... No people that has produced great literature and art has ever been looked upon by the world as distinctly inferior.” James Weldon Johnson

There are many things that can make a man or woman attain greatness but one thing that ensures a stamp of approval is gratitude. It is wise that we take periodical self assessment tests to see how we measure up in the category of gratitude. Our elders would say it this way, “You need to count your blessings!” It almost seems that greatness is not even attainable without being grateful for the things and people that come into our lives who will always deserve credit for what they contributed to us by setting the standard for greatness. So many times in my personal life I can remember saying, “I never could have made it this far without my mother and father, family, friends etc.” Then there are those folks who come into our lives who are like family but they have a different function. I like to call them personal “validators.” These are the people who reinforce the words and lessons that our parents give us. We tend to doubt our parents’ experience, however, so the validator bridges the gap between our loving parental guidance and our stubbornness. I can look back, after much validation in my life, and see how greatness is really not something we should consider ourselves to be without humility and understanding -- that we are really not individuals. We are, actually, the sum total of our life’s experiences and encounters with people from every walk of life. Some of the most memorable experiences of one’s life come when we encounter greatness in somebody we know. It always seems to bring you back to earth when someone does a thing so well that all you can do is watch them in awe. So I realize now how difficult it is to attain greatness without gratitude for being able to see and feel what greatness really is through the eyes of and spirits of so many people who came before me. For their giving the whole of their being to achieve greatness not for themselves but so that a people who were once considered nothing in this world, I am indeed eternally grateful! Supreme Court to hear major affirmative action case “The educational benefits that flow from diverse colleges and universities are no less apparent today than they were three decades ago when Justice Powell cast the deciding vote in Bakke, nine years ago when the Court decided Grutter, or five years ago, when it reaffirmed this Grutter principle…” - NAACP Legal Defense Fund

TO BE EQUAL By MARC MORIAL National Urban League

On Wednesday, October 10, the United States Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that once again challenges the right of colleges and universities to consider race as a factor in ensuring that all students receive the educational benefits of diversity. In Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, Abigail Fisher, a white student who was denied admission to the University in 2008, argues that her race was the only reason she was not admitted. When race-based college admissions were outlawed 16 years ago in Texas, the state passed a law

granting admission to the state’s colleges to all students in the top 10% of their graduating class. Since then race-based admissions have been reinstated and the remaining slots now go to students who must qualify through a regular admissions process that factors race into the decision. When she applied to UT in 2008, Abigail Fisher was not a top 10% student and was turned down. Claiming

attending the University of Texas Law School. In its 1950 Supreme Court victory, Sweatt v. Painter, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund made it possible for Heman Marion Sweatt to be the Law School’s first black student. In its Fisher v. University of Texas Amicus Brief, the LDF states that “From 1997 through 2004, UT did not consider race in admissions. The impact was devastating.”

Despite the fact that 13% of Texas high school graduates were African American, “at no point between 1997 and 2004 did African American students comprise more than 4.5% of the entering year class. Nearly four out of every five UT undergraduate classes had zero or one African American students.” racial discrimination, her argument directly challenges the landmark 2003, Grutter v. Bollinger Supreme Court case which ruled that “student body diversity is a compelling state interest that can justify using race in university admissions.” The National Urban League is among 70 organizations and individuals to file Supreme Court Amicus Briefs in support of diversity in the University of Texas case, more than a dozen Members of Congress; the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin L. Powell; and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF), America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. The case will be closely watched by those of us in the civil rights community who understand that centuries of oppression and decades of exclusion that still linger today require remedies that only affirmative action can bring. It should be remembered that until 1950, African Americans were barred from

Nearly four out of every five UT undergraduate classes had zero or one African American students.” Some progress has been made in recent years, but the numbers are still low and the University of Texas admits that it can and must do better. Debo Adegbile, LDF’s Acting President and Director-Counsel said, “In Grutter the Supreme Court recognized the significant educational benefits of diversity – not just for students of color, but for all students. A diverse college experience better prepares students to participate in our Nation’s civic life.” The balance of the Court has shifted right since Grutter. But we are hopeful that the High Court will reaffirm the nation’s highest values by continuing its support of diversity in our colleges and universities.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

New Poll Reveals How Young Americans Would Create More Jobs Strong Preference for Less Government Interference and Spending WASHINGTON, PRNewswireUSNewswire/ -- Generation Opportunity, released new national polling data on young adults as the 2012 presidential election nears. Since its launch in June of 2011, Generation Opportunity has amassed a following of over four million fans on Facebook and is actively organizing Millennials across America through long-term education initiatives, grassroots tactics, voter registration, and voter turnout efforts. The organization has become the largest non-profit, non-partisan organization in the United States engaging and mobilizing young Americans (ages 18-29 years old) on the important economic issues facing the nation. "Young Americans, through no fault of their own, know how tough it is to find full-time jobs. Their experiences over the last few years have shown them first-hand how devastating the poor economy truly is. They know that high taxes on businesses and runaway federal spending do not create jobs. The Millennial generation has suffered disproportionally from the failed economic policies offered by the White House for the past several years, and they know their careers are being delayed by the lack of jobs and high unemployment," said Paul T. Conway, President of Generation Opportunity and former Chief of Staff of the United States Department of Labor. "They also know they are being handed a raw deal by elected leaders who, despite the high levels of youth unemployment, continue to run up a national debt young Americans will undoubtedly be forced to pay. This generation views government as the greatest barrier to economic expansion and is looking for leaders with the PAGE 6

courage and creativity to free businesses to create jobs. They are fully engaged in these issues and plan to make their voices heard in November." For Generation Opportunity, the polling company, inc./WomanTrend conducted a nationwide online survey of 1,003 adults ages 18-29 between July 27 and July 31, 2012. Randomly selected online opt-in panel participants were sent an invitation to the survey via email which included a secure link to the online questionnaire. Quotas were used to ensure the survey was representative of the larger 18-29 year old nationwide population with regard to race, region, and gender. The data were NOT weighted. The overall sampling margin of error for the survey is ±3.1% at a 95% confidence interval, meaning that the data obtained would not differ more than 3.1 percentage points in 95 out of 100 similar samples obtained.38% - Buy their own place; 32% - Go back to school/getting more education or training; 31% - Start a family; 27% - Change jobs/cities; 26% - Pay off student loans or other debt; 25% - Save for retirement; 23% - Get married; 12% - None of the above (accepted only this response); 4% - Do not know/cannot judge (accepted only this response).

"We will keep turning out Democrats all the way to Election Day. "In the past three cycles, Dallas Democrats have made and kept the county Blue, even in 2010. Dallas has performed a three-peat. 2012 will be a four-peat," said Dallas County 116th Civil District Court Judge Tonya Parker. "Democrats know what's at stake in this election," she said. "President Obama's plans for the economy, health care and education all move our country forward, but Romney won't tell us his plans and even Sunday his running-mate said 'he didn't have time' to explain the Romney budget," said Dallas Democrat Emma Nelson. (Austin, Texas)//State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), released the following statement regarding the decision by the Texas Secretary of State and Attorney General to halt the purge of "dead voters" from county voting rolls. "I am very pleased that the Secretary of State and Attorney General have agreed to halt the flawed voter purge. I am glad Texas’ election officials agreed with me that it was time to call a timeout in order to ensure the rights of legal Texas voters are protected. "Last month, thousands of voters across Texas opened their mailbox to learn that they might be dead. Being alive, it was quite a shock to many of them. I quickly received calls from constituents -- very much alive -- who had received a letter from Harris County voting officials stating the government had obtained information indicating they were deceased and, unless they responded to the letter within 30 days, their voter registration will be cancelled. Thousands of such letters went out across the state. "We all want accurate voter rolls. In the case of the voter purge, I don't think there is any nefarious or malicious intent. Instead, it is all about timing. Election officials took a year to get the list in place and they wanted to start the process barely a month before early voting begins. If these letters had gone out in May, we are not having this discussion because there would have had plenty of time to fix any errors. "The process was clearly flawed and fraught with peril. It took too long to get underway and we are too close to Election Day to try to rush through a purge that will likely cost many Texans their opportunity to vote. Given the fact that we are less than barely a month away from election day and less than a week away from the registration deadline, now was the time to take action. If a process upon which you are relying to purge voters this close to the election is shown to be flawed, you have to start over. "

Black Women's Agenda launches Get Out The Vote Initiative Collaborating Women's Organizations – Serving Over One Million – Pledge Support For Agenda's "Four for 4" Call-toAction WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2012 / PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the 2012 campaigns head into the final weeks, The Black Women's Agenda, Inc. (BWA) announced an ambitious initiative to get out the vote that will be powered by the members of 18 National Collaborating Women's Organizations. "Four for 4" – Four People, Four Votes, Four Years and Foresight – will engage the members of participating sororities, civic and faith-based groups in raising awareness, educating voters and ensuring that at least four people, including themselves, vote on Election Day. With some national polls showing candidates in a virtual dead heat, who votes and how they vote may very well determine the outcome of the 2012 elections. In 2008, two

million more Blacks voted than in the 2004 election. Black women turned out to vote at a higher rate than any other racial, ethnic or gender group, and for the first time, young Black voters had the highest turnout, as compared with other ethnic groups.1 This year however, restrictions on voter registration drives, legislation requiring photo identification at the polls, and the mobilization of a network of conservative groups to challenge what they describe as voter fraud, could potentially hinder some voters. A general malaise, brought on by a slumbering economy and persistently high unemployment, could also adversely impact voter turnout: A Gallup Poll conducted May 1- July 10, 2012 indicated that while the percentage of Blacks who say they will definitely vote is similar to the national average, it is lower than it was in 2004 and 2008. As an organization dedicated to securing, advancing and protecting

the rights and well-being of Black women and their families, the BWA is encouraging its constituency to continue to participate in our nation's democracy by exercising its right to vote. "Four for 4 is about empowerment," explains BWA President Gwainevere Hess. "We all want to see our country move forward, however our two presidential candidates have very different ideas about how to accomplish that. Whatever one's choice, voting is an investment in America's future. It's our way of making our voices heard." Collaborating organizations that have pledged their support for the "Four for 4" initiative include: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Auxiliary to the National Medical Association, Inc.; Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.; Jack & Jill of America, Inc.; Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc.; Mocha Moms, Inc.; National Association of Colored

Founded in 1977 in Washington, DC, the Black Women's Agenda is a national non-profit organization that generates awareness and support for issues affecting Black women worldwide. Through the development of a social priorities agenda, it facilitates discussions that promote effective policies and meaningful change. Information for Black Women during Breast Cancer Awareness Month By the National Cancer Institute

BETHESDA, Md., October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Is there cause for celebration? For many reasons, the answer is a resounding "yes." Since 1990, the rate of death from breast cancer has been dropping. PAGE 9

!

Research—much of it funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI)—has improved our understanding of breast cancer and produced more effective treatments. Yet nearly 27,000 African American women were expected to be diagnosed last year with breast cancer, the most common cancer among this group. And although African American women are less likely than white women to be diagnosed with breast cancer, those African American women who do develop the disease are more likely to die from it than women of any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. Part of the reason is that they are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages, when cancer has spread beyond the breast—and when it is more difficult to treat. The good news is that there is power in information. Get the facts. And, as always, talk with your health care provider about your concerns. Here's what you need to know about breast cancer: Breast cancer is a cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare. An estimated 226,870 women and 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year. Nearly 27,000 of those diagnosed last year were African American women. But more than three out of four African American women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive at least five years after diagnosis. Mammograms are x-ray pictures of the breast that can be used to check for breast cancer in women who have no symptoms of the disease. This type of mammogram is called a screening mammogram. Early detection of breast cancer with screening mammography means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, possibly before it has spread. If you are age 40 or older, you should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Women who are at higher than average risk of breast cancer should talk with their health care provider about whether to have mammograms before age

40 and how often to have them. Some state and local health programs and employers provide mammograms for free or at low cost. Information about low-cost or free mammography screening programs is also available through NCI's Cancer Information Service Don't ignore any symptoms. If you notice any changes in how your breasts look or feel, check with your health care provider. Most changes will not be from breast cancer, but they should always be checked. Many risk factors for breast cancer have been identified. Risk factors are anything that can increase your chance of developing a disease. Some breast cancer risk factors cannot be changed (such as your age or a history of breast cancer in your family), whereas others can. But having a risk factor doesn't mean that you will get breast cancer. To better understand your risk of breast cancer, read the NCI publication "Breast Cancer Risk in American Women" at http://www.cancer.gov/ cancertopics/factsheet/detection/ probability-breast-cancer Women considering hormone therapy for menopause should know that combination therapy––which includes both

estrogen and progestin––increases the risk for breast cancer. Research has shown that exercise may help lower breast cancer risk. Try to make physical activity a part of your everyday life. Strenuous exercise for as little as four hours a week can lower your risk. Being obese after you reach menopause may increase your risk for breast cancer. Doctors know that obesity can increase your risk for a number of diseases—so it makes sense to maintain a healthy weight at any age. Drinking alcohol can increase your breast cancer risk. If you are concerned, talk with your health care professional about reducing your consumption of alcoholic beverages. NCI leads the National Cancer Program and the NIH effort to dramatically reduce the burden of cancer and improve the lives of cancer patients and their families, through research into prevention and cancer biology, the development of new interventions, and the training and mentoring of new researchers. SIDELINE CONFESSIONS

at the movies Written, produced and directed by Dallas native LaShirl Smith, SIDELINE CONFESSIONS, follows the story of highly sought after marketing executive Candy Boudreaux (Frankie Blair) as she pursues star professional football player Eric Whitaker (Eric Window) in hopes of starting a serious romantic relationship. Once Candy starts down this path, she quickly becomes caught up in the scandalous world of professional sports i.e. parties, groupies, blackmail and sexual games. Candy, an attractive, respected, professional woman makes it clear to Eric up front that she is not one of his groupies and therefore, is not going to put up with any shenanigans. To support her position, she initially plays hard to get, which forces Eric to actually woo her, which is undoubtedly a change of pace for him to play the role of the chaser. He is accustomed to women throwing themselves at him and appears to enjoy the challenge of breaking through Frankie’s tough exterior. Once they begin what Candy con-vinces herself to believe is a monog-amous relationship, she goes from being a strong, take-charge woman to being emotionally distraught, heart-broken and vindictive. When she learns she is not the only woman in Eric’s life, she embarks on a mission to teach him a lesson and win him back all at the same time by using sex as her weapon of choice. Eric’s character is much more complex. When he is first introduced onscreen, you assess him as the typical star athlete who is used to being catered to and the center of attention. At times, his personality veers frightfully close to that of a stalker with dual personalities. Without serving up any spoiler alerts, let’s just say the end of the film reveals a completely different side of Eric. Additionally, the central conflict in SIDELINE CONFESSIONS is resolved in the climax and the ending sets the audience up for part two of Smith’s trilogy series. Although Blair and Window are adequate in their performances, it is Trantario Jones’ portrayal of Twinky, who definitely earns the title scene-stealer in this film. Twinky is Candy’s flamboyant, over-the-top gay assistant who lusts after their athletic clients as much as any female groupie. However, he is also a true friend to Candy and offers her genuine advice on how to cope with her troubled relationship with Eric. Jones performs his role with just the right mix of comedy to make his character memorable. Other supporting roles are played by Bubba Ganter (OUR FAMILY WEDDING) as Gregg Booker, a former athlete and Candy’s BMF (best male friend), Kisha Grandy-Alexis (“Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself”) as Candy’s friend Michele, and Dyanna Wilson as Jade Green, Eric’s number one groupie and Candy’s nemesis. Smith, who wrote the screenplay in four days, recently won the Director’s Award at the Kansas City Film Festival for SIDELINE CONFESSIONS, her debut feature film. Based on the book, “Confessions of the Twelfth Man” by Jusbee Jones and inspired by Smith’s personal experience as a top sports and entertainment publicist in Los Angeles, she drew from some of the real-life stories she had heard and situations she had witnessed behind-the-scenes in the sports world and brought them to life on the big screen. PAGE 10

!

Smith also returned to her roots in her hometown of Dallas, Texas, where the indie film was shot. “I wanted to be able to give local actors an opportunity to show their talent,” Smith said. “There is a lot of good talent in the area and I wanted Hollywood to take notice.” Film released in select theaters. An ideal place to book your next stay By Jamille Bradfield organ music here, a human named T:5.7”sending Drac into serious event planning Jonathan (Andy Samberg) shows up, crisis mode.

Although some of the humor is a tad crass (which is to be expected from this bunch of characters), the movie’s monster-themed comedy is funny and virtually free of the borderline inappropriate adult jokes aimed at drawing laughs from parents that have become so commonplace in today’s animated features. From a visual perspective, the action gets a little stale due to being confined to the hallways and other interior spaces of the resort. However, that’s sort of the point of the script, to prove how wonderful Mavis’ life is and will continue to be under one roof and daddy’s firm, pale thumb, of course. The action eventually ventures outside the hotel later in the film, which both opens Drac’s eyes and provides the audience with a welcomed change of scenery. In addition, unlike some of Sandler’s previous live action comedies, this film is not only wholesome entertainment for the entire family, but it also pushes a couple of valuable messages — first, all parents can do is teach their children right from wrong and trust that they will make the right decisions when they become adults, and second, never stereotype or make assumptions about people. Instead, take the opportunity to get to know them (Dracula and the humans). You may be pleasantly surprised. T:9”

Welcome to HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, where monsters, goblins and zombies go to kick back and relax for some worldclass, human-free hospitality. The latest release by Sony Pictures Animation, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is a delightfully funny tale about Dracula, an overprotective, vampire widower who is struggling with the thought of his teenage daughter, Mavis, growing up. To protect her from the unknown dangers of the outside world, particularly humans who he views as evil predators, Dracula builds a luxury hotel with every amenity possible to entice Mavis to stay there forever. The hotel, which is something right out of the Lifestyles of the Rich and Ghoulish, caters to monsters and the undead, and is strategically located in a hidden, haunted forest far, far away from humans. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (“Dexter’s Laboratory” and “The Powerpuff Girls”) and written by Peter Baynham and Robert Smigel, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA follows the story of Count Dracula aka Drac (voiced by actor/executive producer Adam Sandler), as he plans for his daughter Mavis’ 118th coming-of-age birthday party. Throwing fabulous parties for Mavis (Selena Gomez) has become a tradition at Drac’s lavish five-stake resort, but this year is special as he pulls out all the stops to celebrate his daughter officially becoming an adult. All of his party plans are coming together. Drac’s best friends — legendary monsters Frankenstein (Kevin James) and his wife, Eunice, the Bride of Frankenstein (Fran Drescher), Murray the Mummy (CeeLo Green), Wayne the Werewolf (Steve Buscemi) and his wife, Wanda (Molly Shannon) and the Invisible Man (David Spade) have arrived at the hotel for the festivities along with several other spooky guests. Nothing could possibly ruin this perfect occasion for Mavis until…insert scary

In our library K Squared Publishes First ebook: "What the Mzungu Saw" Donates Net Book Proceeds to Vision for Kenya Fund CHICAGO, -- "What the Mzungu Saw: Business and Life Lessons from Africa" details K Squared Communications President Kate Koziol's work in Kenya teaching young entrepreneurs. The book will be launched on Tuesday at the ROTARY/One Cosmopolitan Club's Vision for Kenya fundraiser event at the Underground Wunderbar in Chicago. Net proceeds from the ebook sales, available exclusively on Amazon, will be donated to Vision for Kenya, a registered 501(c)(3) organization based in Chicago, dedicated to aiding healthcare centers and rural hospitals in Kenya. "We work extensively with entrepreneurs and in the travel industry so it was a perfect fit, and a complete honor, for us to work with Kenyan entrepreneurs," said Koziol. "Telling their story in this book and donating the money to benefit Kenyan communities helps raise awareness of their needs and might bring the world a little closer together." "Healthcare is a critical issue and working with ROTARY/One Cosmopolitan Club will help thousands of Kenyans get the care they desperately need," said Jacob Sitati, principal at Maurice+Fischer and one of the founders of Vision for Kenya. "Our first effort will fund medical equipment for Lugulu hospital and our next goal is to Support Black -owned bookstores

build/refurbish two water wells to provide clean water, both life changing projects for this community." Ms. Koziol's work teaching in the 2012 Kenya entrepreneurial studies program was sponsored by the U.S. State Department program and run by Citizen Bridges, formerly known as Heartland International, a Chicago-based non-profit dedicated to the development of civil society worldwide. The book can be bought via Amazon and is available on the Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad and iPhone.

The elevator is Broken workbook helps African American youth stay focused The Elevator is Broken workbook a"ows students to not only think about the leadership ski"s they should possess, but to act on these ski"s as we". Nationwide -- John P. Hamilton, Ed.D. and Larry D. Brown Jr., have returned with the Second Edition of The Elevator is Broken: Youth Leadership & Decision-making Workbook. This workbook is a tool for students, as well as parents, teachers, counselors, and anyone working with youth from third grade well into college. They are proud to revisit their work to assist both males and females of color. Brown is excited about this edition. Brown boasts that previous chapters have been revised and critical thinking questions have been enhanced.

More evident is the continued emphasis on leadership and newly added cultural diversity lessons that have expanded the Second Edition. The continued purpose of The Elevator is Broken is to make students more productive in and outside of the classroom. The workbook use of non-cognitive variables allows a transition to academic success. Moreover, this workbook assists students with not only identifying, but also developing their leadership and decision-making skills. Dr. Hamilton stresses, "Students will be able to identify leadership characteristics, use hip-hop to decipher positive and negative messages, discuss various cultures and subcultures, understand the purpose of setting goals, and examine their personal past and present experiences of leadership and decision-making with enriching scenarios and exercises." The Elevator is Broken allows students to not only think about the leadership skills they should possess, but articulate these skills as well. Lastly, this workbook helps students with

strengthening their study skills to be academically successful. Dr. Na'im Akbar spoke highly of the first edition of The Elevator is Broken. He stated that the workbook is a "...doable manual to help young people learn leadership. In a language and with examples that fit their experience, through these exercises, young people can learn to lead before they are led away from their potential to lead themselves to success. Dr. Akbar continued by stating, "These authors have fulfilled a great need in developing a tool to reach our young people before they go astray rather than trying to reform them after they have been misled. This workbook should be a course requirement for all young people (especially those most socially vulnerable) between Grade 3 and the college years." Dr. Gloria Morrow, one of the nation's leading clinical psychologists believes, "This current workbook provides the building blocks for not only leadership development but character. When young people know who they are, why they are here, and what they are supposed to be doing while they are here, they can embrace their greatness and soar to the top. I highly recommend that every parent and educator invest in this valuable resource, for it has the potential to instill in your sons confidence, courage, commitment, consistency, and character."
