Over 25 years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck D and the other members of the rap group Public Enemy. From the onset, there was a connection and over the Cheryl Smith years the bond has grown stronger and stronger because of our commitment to and love for our people. Have you ever listened to any of Public Enemy’s music? The lyrics are phenomenal and poignant. The level of consciousness that Chuck, Malik Farrakhan, Professor Griff and others have displayed over the years is very impressive and worthy of accolades. Members of the group have their own identities that are just as impressive and collectively they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. I applaud Director Spike Lee for his skillful use of Public Enemy’s work in a number of his productions. Some of my favorites from the group are: “Welcome to the Terrordome,” “911 is a Joke,” “Fight the Power,” “Can’t Truss It,” and of course, “Don’t Believe the Hype!” The author of several books, Chuck is a much-sought after speaker and presenter. There’s nothing pretentious about this brother. Despite his candor and forthright delivery, I’ve witnessed a special side to him. Always a gentleman, he is sincere, humble and considerate. Chuck has a way of spouting wisdom that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. He’s not trying to impress folks with a bunch of psycho-babble or rhetoric. Instead he’s meticulous in thought and presentation, always cognizant of the power of the media. Earlier this year Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by the incomparable Harry Belafonte. What a fitting tribute! Chuck and Malik joined Dick Gregory to kick off the first Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon 19 years ago and Chuck returned to the event marking the 10th anniversary. Malik has attended at least a dozen years. These men realize the importance of lifting as they climb and using their platforms to benefit society. Don’t miss an opportunity to find out about them, if you don’t already know! Public Enemy will be performing with other rap greats: LL Cool J, Ice Cube and De La Soul, as the tour stops in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex July 1, 2013 at the Verizon Theatre at 7p.m. We’re only on this earth for a short time. Spending some of that time listening to Public Enemy is time well spent!

He gained his political chops on two high-profile races: Jesse Jackson’s 1988 presidential bid and the campaign that helped elect New York City’s first black mayor, David Dinkins.

President Obama to nominate Gaspard for U.S. Ambassador to South Africa

THE HAITIAN TIMES

Gaspard, the son of Haitian immigrants, has a long history with Africa. He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the age of 3, his family moved to the U.S. and settled in New York City. Patrick Gaspard / City Beat

DAKAR, Senegal — On Thursday, at the start of his week-long trip to Africa, President Barack Obama confirmed his longexpected plan to nominate Patrick Gaspard for U.S. Ambassador to South Africa. The former White House political director is one of the top political operators in American politics — with two successful presidential campaigns under his belt, as political director for Obama’s 2008 campaign and executive director the Democratic National Committee during the 2012 election cycle.

JUNE 28, 2013

During his tenure at the White House, Gaspard played an instrumental role in the administration’s swift humanitarian response to the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. It would become one of the largest in modern history. Before he became one of Obama’s trusted advisers, Gaspard was leading political strategy and organizing at 1199/ SEIU, the largest health workers union in the country.

When announcing the news of the nomination to reporters traveling with Obama in Senegal, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes lauded Gaspard as “somebody who is close to the President (and) somebody who cares deeply about South Africa,” according to the New York Daily News. Obama is currently visiting South Africa and was expected to meet with Nelson Mandela. The chances for the anticipated meeting between the first black presidents of the U.S. and South Africa is now slim, due to Mandela’s waning health. He remains in critical condition.

Strict abortion regulations fail to pass after dramatic end to filibuster

Several measures regarding abortion regulations that failed during the regular session were once again up for consideration during the first special session.

Governor David Dewhurst confirmed the vote had occurred after midnight and was therefore invalid. Senator Davis' stand is a prime example of the type of courage necessary to ensure the rights of all Texans continue to be protected.

These would have created obstacles to safe, legal, and accessible abortion services and presented a threat to the health of women across Texas. On Tuesday, the last day of the special session, Senator Wendy Davis of Fort Worth made a move to stop the legislation from passing by staging an 11-hour filibuster. Fighting an uphill battle, Davis had to stand the entire time without stopping for food or water. Senator Davis was two hours short of the midnight deadline before being stopped by a questionable parliamentary ruling. As Senator Davis spoke, hundreds of supporters clad in orange filled the rotunda of the Capitol waiting for their turn to sit in the Senate gallery. Davis' fellow Senate Democrats attempted to run out the clock by bringing up procedural issues. PAGE 3

!

The day after Senator Davis' filibuster, Governor Perry called a second special session, directing the legislature to take up this issue once again.

With only fifteen minutes left before midnight, the gallery erupted into cheers following Senator Leticia Van de Putte's objection to Republican leaders after they refused to recognize one of her motions. Those cheers swelled throughout the halls of the Capitol and refused to die as protesters voiced their opposition to the bill. Their screams drowned out a last minute attempt by Republicans to vote on the bill. In the wake of the pandemonium it was unclear whether the bill had passed, but at 3am an announcement by Lieutenant

Should the new regulations he supports pass, nearly all of Texas' 42 abortion clinics would be forced to close; only 5 would meet the new requirements, making it difficult for women in rural areas to access necessary care. Senate Bill 5, the bill containing these restrictions, would have required that abortions be done in a clinic that meets the requirements for an ambulatory surgical center by doctors with admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic. Also included in the bill was a measure that would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Zimmerman Trial Notes By Miles Jaye Davis

“broken” or “Black English,” Rachel Jeantel also speaks fluent Spanish and Haitian French. Beware; however, throughout history, economics and academics have served as reliable tools of class separation, deceit and treachery. Here it may serve as a diversionary tactic - Rachel Jeantel is not on trial.

Henry Higgins: Alright Eliza, say it again. Eliza: The rine in Spine styes minely in the pline. Higgins: The rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain. Eliza: Din’t I sye that? Higgins: No, you didn’t sye that; you didn’t even say that. Every night before you go to bed; where you used to say your prayers, I want you to say: ‘the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain’ - fifty times. You get much further with the Lord if you don’t offend his ears.

Interestingly; while she may lack a mastery of traditional or classical grammar; as a trained voice-over specialist, I find her diction, elocution and articulation to be spot on - “Yes, Sir!” Her delivery is paced, clear and deliberate. “You got it?” Bill also knew the power of subtle inferences and codification. In Othello, he made these references to the celebrated General: Roderigo: ... an old black ram’s tupping your white ewe... Roderigo: What a full fortune does the thick lips owe... Iago: Because we come to you to do you service and you think we are ruffians, you’ll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse; you’ll have your nephews neigh to you...

You may remember the Broadway hit show “My Fair Lady” where Henry Higgins was enlisted to “groom” Eliza into a proper lady beginning with transforming her harsh cockney accent into a polished King’s English. Just as Higgins was approaching the point of defeat Eliza offered a perfect rendition:

Eliza: The rain... in Spain... stays mainly... in the plain. (Labored) Iago: I am one sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs. Higgins: What was that? (Shocked) Roderigo: ... to the gross clasps of a lascivious Moor. Eliza: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (More Brabantio: O foul thief, where hast thou stow’d my Miles Jaye Davis confident) daughter? Damn’d as thou art, thou hast enchanted her; for I’ll Higgins: Again... (Elated) refer me to all things of sense. If she in chains of magic were not bound. Whether a maid so tender, fair, and happy. So opposite to marriage that she shunn’d the wealthy Eliza: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Add music) curled darlings of our nation. Would ever have, to incur a general mock. Run from Higgins: I think she’s got it! I think she’s got it! (Jubilant) her guardage to the sooty bosom of such a thing as thou... Eliza: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Singing) Had Shakespeare written today’s tragic drama he might raise the spirit of young Higgins: By George she’s got it! By George she’s got it! Now once again... Trayvon Martin to appear in the mist of the night and reveal, himself, the details of where does it rain? (Ecstatic) his murder as did Hamlet’s beloved father, the King. Eliza: On the plain... on the plain. Higgins: And where’s that soggy plain. (Giddy) Sadly; it may take nothing short of such an appearance to win him justice in the City of Sanford, Florida. Eliza: In Spain... In Spain. Together: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Joyous) Trayvon Martin’s young friend Rachel - a senior in high school - is our Eliza. Many find her inarticulate, and one defense attorney has openly questioned her literacy and intellect in court. “Do you understand English?” he asked; to which she replied: “I understand you!” References were made to the King’s English so perhaps the State might have enlisted a modern day Henry Higgins to prep Ms. Jeantel for trial. I thought of who might be the single most reliable authority on the King’s English. Wm. “Bill” Shakespeare immediately came to mind - of course. Shakespeare might remind us that during his rise to fame in Elizabethan England and his heyday under King James; in a post Black Plague England (Pop. 200,000), the nation’s literacy rate topped out at about 33% - and that was exclusively among men. Nothing to boast about as we struggle to carefully fit everything meaningful into a Eurocentric context. I can imagine the majority of young women of that day communicated exactly as did Eliza - in what we refer to as “broken” English.” Interestingly; in addition to

What Zimmerman might have said in response to Trayvon’s question: “Why are you following me?” Hey buddy! I’m neighborhood watch. How’s it going? Are you okay? Got caught in the rain, huh? You live around here? Need help finding your dad’s place? I see you got some Skittles... I’m an M&M’s man myself. LOL! Take it ease buddy! You might want to get in from the rain... we’ve had some break-ins recently... the cops are keeping a pretty close eye on the area. None of these options would have led to an altercation. In fact; engaging the young man in a non-confrontational exchange would have: • Identified himself • Reduced Trayvon’s anxiety level • Given George a sense of Trayvon’s mood and demeanor Miles Jaye Davis is a musician, singer, artist, writer, actor and producer. THE BLACK WOMEN’S AGENDA, INC. SPEAKS OUT ON SUPREME COURT’S VOTING RIGHTS DECISION

redistricting plan, and Florida’s attempts to slash the period for early voting, which is disproportionally used by AfricanAmerican voters.[1] According to this same source, Before Congress reauthorized the act in 2006, it amassed a record of over 15,000 pages demonstrating that statesponsored racial discrimination in voting continues to be concentrated in the jurisdictions long covered by the Voting Rights Act.

WASHINGTON, DC – In a sharply worded statement, The Black Women’s Agenda, Inc. (BWA) denounced the Supreme Court’s recent decision to strike down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which establishes the formula that determines which states need preclearance from the federal government before changing voting procedures. “The Black Women’s Agenda is shocked and appalled by the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to overturn Shelby County v. Holder,” said BWA President Gwainevere Hess. “This decision will have a devastating impact on African Americans and other American minorities throughout the country.” The Supreme Court left standing Section 5 of the Voter Rights Act, allowing the federal government to require states with a history of discrimination to obtain approval prior to making any changes to voting laws in their jurisdictions. “However,” Hess insisted, “by placing the onus on Congress to update the formula determining which states need pre-clearance, the Court appears to be indifferent to the numerous voter intimidation and suppression cases that marred the 2012 election cycle.” Citing information released by the Constitutional Accountability Center, a public interest law firm, Hess pointed out that, in the run-up to the 2012 election, state and local officials attempted to put in place restrictive voter ID laws, shorten early voting hours and make it more difficult to register to vote. These efforts included Texas’s stringent voter ID law, which would have disenfranchised low-income Texas citizens, who are disproportionately African-American and Hispanic, as well as the state’s discriminatory !

Gwainevere Hess, President The Black Women's Agenda, Inc.

“The Chief Justice, from his worldview, may believe that much has changed since 1965 – however, we know the struggle has not ended and, from the lens of minorities, the light has now become more blurred and dim from this decision,” Hess said, adding that “The Black Women's Agenda, Inc. will join civil rights and community organizations in mobilizing communities to ensure that voting rights are not rolled back to pre-Voting Rights Act 1965, and are expanded to all states so that all citizens are guaranteed the right to vote.” Founded in 1977 in Washington, DC, The Black Women’s Agenda is a national non-profit organization that generates awareness and support for issues affecting Black women worldwide. Through the development of a social priorities agenda, it facilitates discussions that promote effective policies and meaningful change. Dear Shirley:

Ask Gwendolyn Baines

Just When I Thought I Had Him – He Le"! Dear Gwendolyn: I was married to a wonderful man for 46 years. He is now deceased. I got involved with another man and after dating for about a year he had a heart attack. He underwent by-pass surgery. I took him in and took care of him. When he was able to take care of himself, he became distant towards me and moved out. He moved back to his apartment which was okay with me. He dropped all ties with me. I would call to check on him but he never returned the calls. He just said that he didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. He told me, “You live your life and I will live mine.” Gwendolyn, I need your opinion. Should I try to stay in touch as a friend or just let go? Shirley

You mentioned that you had a wonderful husband for 46 years. Girl, slap yourself on the side of your face because you need a ‘wake-up’ call. I hate to be the one to tell you but your husband may have been on the last train traveling your way. Good men don’t come in abundance – but bad men do. Let me tell you this: When some people become ill, they become humbled and thankful for whatever is being done for them. They are most gracious. On the other hand, there are some people when they become ill, they become mean, evil and cruel. As to your question about this man who will not return your calls, don’t try to force the issue as much as to be a friend. If he becomes ill again, let him go to someone else. This thing of being a part of your life when he needs you and then leaving when he doesn’t makes no sense at all. So, my opinion is to forget him —and do it quick. 6 Types of Friends Every Woman Should Have! Do you rely on just one good friend? What would it take to nurture a few more close friendships? Why do you think some women are competitive with other women, but not the men? What can you do to put other women at ease and facilitate more authentic connections with women in your circle of influence? This week I want to share a special conversation starter with you from my latest book Happy Women Live Better: 13 Ways to Trigger Your Happiness Every Day set to release Oct. 1st. See the six specific types of friends every woman should have and spark up a conversation with your closest girlfriends this week to discuss what type of friend you may be. Points to Ponder Studies show that it is a good idea to have several types of friends rather than relying on one or two to meet all of your needs. Statistically speaking, your relationship with your girlfriends will likely outlast your marriage, your parents and your co-workers. One study showed that when fewer than 15% of the women in a firm were in positions of power, the women were competitive and backstabbing with

JUNE 28, 2013

each other. But when women represented more than 15% of the powerful positions, women were collaborative. Do you have the right mix of friends? Not every friend can meet every need. Some will meet more than one need, but few can do it all! Here are six types of friends every woman needs: The Wise Friend. You can count on them to talk you out of doing something you'd regret, help you solve your latest dilemma, and give all-around sound advice about just about anything. The Fun Friend. Want to have a good time, be adventurous, or laugh 'til your stomach hurts? You can always count on this one. The Travel Buddy. Drama-free, this friend is adaptable, maybe even adventurous, and loves to see the world. The Relationship Coach. Transparent, real and willing to listen, this friend has figured a few things out in the love department and genuinely wants to see you happy when it comes to romance. The Career Comrade. You share a similar background and goals in your work life, and encourage each other to higher professional success. The Accountability Partner. To maximize your potential, this is your go-to pal to help keep you on track. Now, let's turn the tables. Think of your four closest friends. Which type of friend are you to each of them? Head over to my blog and leave your comments. I would love to hear from you! Until next time, Valorie Burton

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. This film is a mixture of our pains we deal with as a people from the foods we eat and how they are legally poisoning our families, to our children on legal drugs in the school system, to our men going to prison, economics and more. This potent message is delivered through amazing poets, singers, and great speakers who have lived the subjects they are speaking on. This film also deals with solutions. It is time to get to the root of our problem as a people. We cannot continue to complain about our situation, and not be willing to do what is necessary for change. We cannot be angry that the Asian community has capitalized on our insecurities. Change is internal , we change ourselves, we change our world.
