SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Addition by Subtraction In math there are some laws and formulas that seem to contradict themselves at times. I remember vividly in a math class hearing a teacher say to the students that the number zero (or Aaron Hopkins 0) has no value. Well, if that is true, how does a number with no value increase the value of another number when it is placed on the right side of that number? An example would be taking the number one and putting a zero next to it on the right and it becomes 10. I thought about this question recently in relation to a person saying they were going to remove someone or something from their life to make their personal situation better. In some cases this can in fact be a necessary option that we should exercise to remove burdens, negativity and stress. So I remembered another math teacher that introduced me to the concept of addition by subtraction. By the definitions of addition and subtraction this seems to be a mere contradiction of terms. The term addition means: 1.The act or process of adding, especially the process of computing with sets of numbers so as to find their sum.2. Something added, such as a room or section appended to a building. The term subtraction means: 1.The act or process of subtracting; deduction. 2. Mathematics The arithmetic operation of finding the difference between two quantities or numbers. Now we have to consider the individual value of something that can be present in an equation but has the properties of negative energy or potential to become destructive to the value of the other numbers in the same equation. So in this instance it would be desirable to reduce the number of this equation by removing the specific number with this negative property. In relating this to human behavior there are some things that are not always visible to help determine the values of a certain number or a person’s value. In order to make this addition by subtraction of a number or a individual, something must happen to the value of the numbers left after the removal of the negative number or in this case person. When we have experiences with negative people in life we tend to slowly learn from what we encountered. There is always useful information that can be applied in future relationships and situations that would not be available without the past negative experience. So the addition to our knowledge of how to better deal with and or avoid people who posses negative properties (negatively charged) adds to the original number or person’s value by the retention of the bad experience being used as a tool. This in fact changes the property of the number and enhances its’ character. Not trying to be too deep here but I have to use this math I learned for something right? So the truth is if you have to remove someone from your circle to gain some ground it can be for the better but only if you don’t allow yourself to take on the negative properties of that person, otherwise you just became a cancerous cell! Companies Continue to Insult Black Consumers
TRUTH TO POWER By GEORGE E. CURRY When I was in the process of reading and writing about Nielsen and the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s report on AfricanAmerican buying power for this week’s Black newspapers, I was reminded of how many top companies continue to take advantage of Black consumers while providing little, if anything, in return. They are not the only ones at fault – so are we. People treat you the way you allow them to treat you. The same can be said of corporations, though they are not, as Mitt Romney contends, people. The Nielsen report notes that Black spending power, which totals $695 billion a year, is expected to soar to $1.1 trillion by 2015. And very few of those dollars are reinvested by advertising in the Black media. It’s a matter of respect. As Black publishers point out, if a company advertises in theWashington Post or the New York Times, it could be speaking to anyone. However, when it advertises in the Black media, we know they are speaking directly to our audience and are taking us seriously as valued consumers. For the most part, that’s not happening. When Nielsen lists the top companies advertising with Black media, some familiar names are nowhere to be found. Eight of the top U.S. 10 banks are not on the list of top 10 financial/insurance companies advertising in the Black media. JP Morgan Chase has overtaken Bank of America as the top bank in the U.S., with assets of $2.2 trillion. Don’t shed any tears for second-place Bank of America, which has assets of
$2.13 trillion, or CitiGroup with $1.8 trillion. Neither of them is among the top 10 entities advertising with the Black media. But African-Americans hold checking or savings accounts at all three banks. Let’s put them on notice by sending them a copy of this column and my story, which is carried in this week’s NNPA papers and is posted on BlackPressUSA.com. Tell them that by the time the next Nielsen report comes out a year from now if they are not on that list, they will be added to one of our lists, not the one people brag about. If banks can disregard us, we can disregard them by closing our accounts and moving them to a bank that shows its appreciation. If you have accounts at either JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, CitiBank (CitiGroup), Bank of New York Mellon, PNC Financial Services, State Street Corp., Capital One or SunTrust Banks, put them on notice today that they will lose a valuable customer if they continue along this path. In terms of a national campaign, I suggest first focusing on the three l a rg e s t b a n k s . H e r e ’s c o n t a c t information for their top official: Mr. James Dimon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer JP Morgan Chase 270 Park Avenue, 39th Floor New York, NY 10017 Phone: 212-270-1111 Fax: 212-270-1121 Email: jamie.dimon@jpmchase.com Mr. Brian T. Let the “banksters” know how you feel about their actions. To add insult to injury, $182.5 billion of our tax dollars went to bail out American International Group – or Notorious AIG., as comedian Bill Maher calls them – but they have not reciprocated with the Black media. AIG, the largest insurance company in the world, is MIA. You can’t turn on the television without seeing one of those horrendous man/ape commercials about GEICO. Yet, GEICO is monkeying around with us by also being absent from the list of top advertisers. African-Americans over index on mobile phones. Verizon is a top advertiser with the Black media but not AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile. If they haven’t joined the list by next year, we should pull the plug on them. At various times and to varying degrees, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the NAACP, among others, have had a public grading system for Corporate America. But that measurement has been abandoned. It’s time to reinstate it. Instead of competing with one another, this is an excellent opportunity to prove that our civil rights organizations have what they call “operational unity” and join together to produce an annual Economic Report Card. Given its ties to Corporate America, perhaps Marc Morial and the National Urban League can take the lead on this. It’s time for leaders to lead. As Jackson said at the press conference releasing the Nielsen report on Black buying power, perhaps we should stop boasting about our spending power and closely examine what companies spend with us. And based on those findings, we should do what the lady who reads the church announcements each Sunday admonishes – govern ourselves accordingly. George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA) and editorial director of Heart & Soul magazine. Jacksonville, FL -- It could well be the catchiest song and dance ever created, however, for the creator of "The Obama Dance", the first ever choreographed Presidential song has a worthy and serious undertone. In fact, Bob Brown is attempting to reach directly out to the First Lady to share its appeal. His mission is simple; Brown is asking Michelle Obama to contact Michael Stewart, Director of Organizing for America, with a request to send the song's video link to the Organization's thirteen million social media followers. While Brown hopes homes, schools and offices around the globe will learn the dance, the real purpose of the viral entertainment spectacle is to deliver at least $500 million of free Audio Books to Obama supporters ! sending a strong message of unity and firing up high turnouts on November 6th. "It is my intention to donate at least $500 million dollars in digital products to Obama Supporters while initiating a worldwide vision for The Obama Dance. I believe that this $500 gift to every Obama Supporter in America will surely send a strong message to voters and fire them up at the polls," says Brown, who has turned his song and dance into a viral web hit. He continues, "We can reach over half a billion people around the world through the dance, while making huge leaps and bounds towards inspiring Americans to show up at the polls, make their voices heard and put Obama back in the Oval Office." Brown's strategy is being praised by critics as a perfect example of how the internet can spread a life-changing and powerful message. "If I can reach the First Lady through the internet it will be a perfect showcase of the medium's power. We all have an opportunity to change the world. This is my contribution," Brown adds. Brown's letter to the first lady can be viewed here: www.dearmichelleobama.com View the Obama Dance at: www.obamadancevideo.com Obama supporters interested in downloading the free digital products can do so here: www.obamadancehistory.com A native of Florida, Bob Brown, has been writing and performing songs since age 9. AUSTIN — Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.8 percent in September, down from 7.1 percent in August. The state’s unemployment rate is down from 7.9 percent a year ago, and is well below the national unemployment rate in September of 7.8 percent. Texas added 21,000 seasonally adjusted non farm jobs
in September for a total of 262,700 jobs added since last year. “We saw encouraging signs in our state’s labor market in September and a decrease in the unemployment rate last month,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. “Texas continues to add jobs and we now have a record number of people employed in our state.” Seven of the 11 major industries in Texas expanded in September. The largest gain was in Professional and Business Services, which grew by 13,600 jobs. The industry has grown by 47,200 positions over the past year. “It is clear that employers are benefitting from the available skilled workers in our state,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “I’m encouraged to see that 3,800 manufacturing jobs were added last month, which indicates a growing

A Healthy You The Ryan Plan Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement on how the Ryan plan will increase premiums for millions of seniors, and how specifically its effects would be felt by seniors in the 30th Congressional District of Texas: “Congressman Ryan introduced a budget, which is supported by Governor Romney and House Republicans, that would do irreparable damage to our Medicare system. The Ryan-Republican Plan transforms Medicare into a voucher system, increasing costs for seniors and subjecting them to the whims of private insurance companies. Under the Ryan Plan, the guarantee we have made to our seniors of coverage and affordability of Medicare will cease to exist. Americans have contributed to Medicare their entire lives, and the Ryan Plan jeopardizes a program that seniors rely on when they retire.” In the 30th District, the Ryan plan: · Increases prescription costs for 4,600 Medicare beneficiaries who enter the Part D donut hole, forcing them to pay an extra $42 million for drugs over the next decade. · Eliminates new preventive care benefits for 71,000 Medicare beneficiaries. · Forces 71,000 Medicare beneficiaries who are currently enrolled in traditional Medicare to pay thousands of dollars more in premiums to remain in traditional Medicare after Medicare becomes a voucher program. · Reduces coverage for 11,600 Medicare beneficiaries who rely on Medicaid to supplement their Medicare coverage, potentially denying them over $410 million in health benefits. · Jeopardizes nursing home care for 1,400 district residents whose expenses are paid by Medicaid. The Congresswoman noted, “the Ryan plan is harmful to the residents of the 30th District, and I will not support a policy that breaks the promises we have made to our seniors. There is a far better alternative to the Ryan plan: the Affordable Care Act, supported by Democratic Members of Congress and signed into law by President Obama. The Affordable Care Act reduces the costs of prescription drugs for seniors, offers a wide range of critical preventive services for seniors, and extends the program by nearly a decade. I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues to protect seniors from these destructive attempts by the GOP, and stand firm against Republican attempts to dismantle the Medicare system.” PAGE 9

A Rising Star She’s young, gifted, black and Republican! Even as a high school student, Stefani Carter was recognized as someone who was going places. Many thought they would see her anchoring the news or covering some important story, especially when she started amassing scholarship dollars for journalism school. A winner of multiple scholarships from the DallasFort Worth Association of Black Communicators, she went on to the University of Texas and upon graduation decided to apply for law school. Off she went to Harvard, where interestingly, she decided to also join the Republican Party, despite Harvard’s liberal leanings, she said. She graduated, passed the Bar exam and began working as an attorney --as an assistant district attorney in Collin County. eventually gaining a reputation as a “tough-on-crime” prosecutor. In 2010, she was elected to represent part of Dallas County in the House of Representatives District 102 with 54% of the vote, representing parts of Dallas, Garland, Richardson She has the distinction of being the first Republican African PAGE 12

American woman to serve in the House, At the end of the 82nd Legislative Session, she received the prestigious 2011 Taxpayer Champion award, presented by the Texans for Fiscal Responsibility and given to legislators who earned an exemplary rating, or "A" rating, for exhibiting high fiscal austerity and for promoting free enterprise issues during the Session. Rep. Carter has received numerous other awards during her short tenure in the House, but she has been busy and is quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the “most conservative members of the Texas House.” She said she was proud to be named the 32nd most conservative member of the Texas House of Representatives, according to a study conducted by researchers at Rice University. And the accolades keep coming her way as she recently was honored by the Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR). TLR is the “largest state civil justice reform organization in America. Upon accepting her award, Rep. Carter received a standing ovation as she thanked TLR members for their work to put an end to frivolous lawsuits.
Citing several instances when lawsuits have been filed for the silliest reasons, she praised TLR for remaining vigilant, because in addition to insurance surcharges, it was becoming more and more difficult and expensive to operate a business in Texas when faced with overzealous lawyers who abuse the system all for the purpose of representing their clients. Talking about her family and how her parents worked to support their family, ensuring that her siblings knew the importance of hard work and taking advantage of every educational opportunity, Rep. Carter encouraged TLR to keep up their efforts and for members of the Republican Party to continue the “fight” to not only regain the White House but for conservative values. Rep. Carter, during her two years in office, has always been on the go. She visits numerous groups and established an internship program. She’s running for reelection and says that although the district is 52% Republican, there’s only an 800 vote advantage, “so every vote counts.” “This is a critical time for the direction of our country,” she said. “We have to take charge of the election. We have to let !
people who will help us prosper.” Her comments were interrupted several times by the applause of the packed house at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. And shortly after she received that award, she received more good news, “I am honored to announce that I have earned the support of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association. The Texas Classroom Teachers Association is the leading teacher association in Texas and has been protecting the rights of teachers and advocating on their behalf since 1927. The future of our state depends on the quality of our education. It is our responsibility to provide all students in our state access to an excellent education experience where they are taught by the best and brightest.” Rep. Carter is not taking her position lightly. She believe in the work she is doing and says she is committed as she moves forward, and as much as she tells her constituents what she will do for them, she is big on listening to their concerns. “I work hard for you,” she tells them, and the proof is in the reports as her star continues to rise in the Republican Party. - Cheryl Smith !

Making Aromatherapy A Part Of Your Everyday Health Maintenance Routine The best defense to disease is maintaining a constant offense of ridding your personal space of bacteria, viruses, and the like. Aromatherapy is one of the most natural, ways to achieve and maintain a healthier environment. When incorporated as a part of your daily routine it can lead to faster healing of skin abrasions, fewer colds, faster relief of tension headaches, and many other physical conditions. Aromatherapy is a natural, noninvasive approach that helps the whole person and assists the body's natural ability to balance and maintain itself through the use of essential oils. It has been used for thousands of years and is the basis for modern day pharmacology. Essential oils are the natural extracts obtained from aromatic plants. They have antiinflammatory, pain relieving, as well as anti-bacterial properties to name a few. It is widely recognized as an extremely effective form of complementary medicine, and is in no way intended to replace the treatment of a licensed medical practitioner. It involves both the inhalation of soothing aromas and the dermal absorption of aromatic plant essences. As tissues relax, circulation is improved. Improved circulation allows the body to function more efficiently, thereby creating the best defense to disease and unhealthy environments. Circulation, particularly in the hands and feet, can be a problem for the aging. Geranium blended with a base oil can be used as an PAGE 13

effective body rub to strengthen and support the circulatory system. Massage from the hands to the elbow and from the foot to the knee. Rosemary essential oil can be used to encourage concentration and focus. Fresh rosemary has a pleasant aroma that stimulates as well as provides healing to the bronchial passages. Eucalyptus has long-been known to provide relief to blocked sinuses. It is also an effective disinfectant that can even be used in the laundry! Getting a good night’s sleep plays a major role in a good health maintenance routine. Lavender actually causes your brain to trigger the production of serotonin, the body’s natural response to relaxation. Lightly misting sheets and pillowcases with true (not synthetic) lavender linen water before retiring almost assures a restful sleep with a refreshed morning wake-up. These are just a few of the many ways that aromatherapy can be incorporated into your everyday health maintenance routine. The important point is that it is completely natural. In today’s world of synthetic and smells-justlike-the-real-thing products, the simple natural approach to your health is one that will give your body all it needs to win the battle of disease and discomfort. www.livingcomfortably.com Tune in to Deborah on Blog TalkRadio for - "Something Natural...Aromatherapy to Enhance Everyday Living" Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Central Time. !

In our library SISTERS IN FAITH BIBLE: A NEW JOURNEY THROUGH THE GOOD BOOK FOR AFRICANAMERICAN WOMEN "The Sisters in Faith Bible is the perfect Bible for a Divinely Inspired Victoriously Anointed DIVA woman who desires a closer relationship with God and a better understanding of how faith relates to every area of life. It represents a sisterhood I want to be a part of!" -Sheryl Lee Ralph, actress
Nashville, TN ) -- Thomas Nelson, a world leading Christian publisher, is preparing to release a new Bible that will provide African-American women with an important and inspiring new tool to help bring their Sunday morning experience into their everyday lives. The Sisters in Faith Holy Bible: Encouraging and Empowering African-American Women with God's Truth ($39.99, ISBN 9781401675158) is expected to address the concerns of today's Christian women who are seeking God's wisdom and guidance in every area of their busy and complex lives. The Bible will be available January 1, 2013 in stores and online. This beautifully designed Bible will have a unique African-American perspective, thanks to executive editors Michele Clark Jenkins and Stephanie Perry Moore. Michele and Stephanie are the co-founders of Sisters in Faith, an entity established to create meaningful products that encourage and empower African-American women with God's truth, and address the needs and concerns of life that are particularly challenging to the women in this culture. "African-American women have a different history and a different presence from any other demographic," said Jenkins. "Their history is characterized by strength in the face of instability; making a-way out of no-way and selfdefinition in the face of a lost identity. A Support Black -owned bookstores
substantial number of African-American women are working mothers and oftentimes single mothers. Most are looking to cut a new path. The Sisters in Faith Bible is designed to speak directly to the specific needs of this group of women." "African-American women have long suffered and long loved the Lord in such a way that being Christian and being an African-American woman is synonymous," adds Moore. "But very few Christian products reveal the African-American woman's voice to the body of Christ and almost none have been created to speak directly to her in a way that relates to her life and her struggle. This will be a journey to awaken a new and dynamic spirit for these women." Jenkins is the Senior Director of the Public Policy Consulting Group for Griffin & Strong, P.C. and also specializes in entertainment contracts and business development. She is the author of numerous faith-based books and co-editor of several Bible projects. Moore has also served as coeditor for several Bible projects and is the author of over fifty young adult, inspirational fiction books and four adult titles. Together, they have gathered twelve women -- who live in different areas of the country, and are experiencing different ages and stages of their lives, relationships and careers -- to contribute to this project. Joann Rosario Condrey, a recording artist, worship leader and ordained evangelist; Helen Delaney, copastor at Liberty Church in Marietta, Georgia; Vanessa Davis Griggs, a motivational speaker and author of more than thirteen novels; Keren Heath, a writer, entrepreneur and worship leader; Tiffani-MiShelle Johnson, a poet, actor, screenwriter and director; Jennifer Keitt, author, host of Today's Black Woman radio show, and founder of Zakar magazine and the Jennifer Keitt Life Institute for Women; Jamell Meeks, Director of Women's Ministries for the Salem Baptist Church of Chicago;
Brenda Noel, an award-winning freelance publishing professional and partner in ECHO Creative Media; Dawn Sherill, M. Div., co-founder and partner in ECHO Creative Media ; Kim Cash Tate, an author, attorney and co-founder of the nonprofit ministry, Colored in Christ; Karen Waddles, Assistant to the Publisher of Moody Publishers, the publishing arm of Moody Bible Institute; and Lakeba Hibbler Williams, a licensed counselor, speaker, trainer, and educator. The Sisters in Faith Bible is a sister-tosister guide through the Word of God that demonstrates how the Word is active and practical for every part of life, including a sister's interaction with God, herself, her family members, her career and coworkers and others. Featured sections will include: The Heart - an enriching overview of each book of the Bible, which describes its content and theme, and includes personal insight from one of the contributors, telling how each book specifically spoke to her heart. Arise! - devotionals that have been developed by women to share their understanding of God's Word in ways that directly address women's issues and concerns. These fifty devotionals address topics such as church, prayer life, parents, marriage, divorce, children, accountability, forgiveness, jealousy, friendship, trust, leadership, stress management, money, organization, work ethic and many more.
