Message to the People...

Another Pookie on the prowl... MegaFest 5

Ada Brown 8

Ask Gwen Baines 11

SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

Cheryl Smith

It appears folks are coming alive, speaking out on the serial rapist, domestic violence and assaults against women. Pookie surfaced over a year ago when it was reported that a man was targeting members of Delta Sigma eta Sorority, Inc. in northern Dallas, and now information has been released about a serial rapist in southern Dallas. According to reports, there appears to be two Pookies out there attacking women. While one targeted women 55-65 in their homes, this latest assault has been against younger women who were out walking. One email called on women to protect themselves and others. It has been suggested that self-defense classes are held, as well. Any time there is an assault in our communities, it is imperative that everyone takes notice and that every resource available is used in pursuit of justice. According to Dallas Police, the first rape in this latest string of assaults, happened on June 22 and because victims were hesitant or slow to come forward, the rapes are just making headlines. e victims deserve support and there should be increased efforts to catch these perpetrators. We must put the pressure on these criminals. ere will be a community meeting ursday evening at 6p at True Lee Baptist Church, 3907 Bertrand. CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of $5,000. We hope that it is not the same $5,000 that was offered for Pookie in North Dallas! Surely your mother, sister, daughter, niece, girlfriend, baby mama, aunt, Grandmother, friend, deserves your support!

Fairness in Sentencing By Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced key policy changes designed to reduce our nation’s prison population. Under Mr. Holder’s plan, the Justice Department will no longer hand out unduly harsh sentences to low-level drug offenders who have no connections to gangs and drug trafficking. Mr. Holder’s plan makes absolutely good sense. America has the highest documented prison population in the world. Nearly 2.3 million adults were incarcerated in federal, state and county prisons and jails in 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics. During the past two decades the country has witnessed an increase in its prison population largely due to mandatory sentencing policies that were implemented in the l980s. Many of those arrested and given such sentences were minor drug dealers. Mr. Holder announced that these

people would be spared the mandatory sentencing guides that had given some of them sentences of ten years or more.

been subject to the policy that placed them behind bars for a decade.

According to Justice Department figures Since President the U.S. prison Richard Nixon population of announced the “war 1,571,013 has been on drugs” in the early slowly decreasing 1970s, our prison along with the population has risen country’s declining Hon. Eddie Bernice Johnson so dramatically that crime rate. There we have 25 percent of have been several the world’s prison population while attempts in Congress to reform we account for only five percent of sentencing policy, leading to the world’s population. Currently, speculation that an era of massive people convicted of conspiracy to prison incarceration would cease. sell 5kg of cocaine receive a Our current policy is also mandatory ten year minimum fiscally irresponsible. In 2010, sentence. housing prisoners in this country Many jurisdictions have developed drug courts and effective drug treatment plans, but judges find their hands tied by the current sentencing requirements. Even, first time offenders have

cost taxpayers $80 billion. These resources can be better used by keeping dangerous criminals incarcerated and making serious attempts at rehabilitation rather than just warehousing individuals.

Harsh, mandatory minimum sentences for minor drug crimes do not make sense. When we incarcerate minor offenders, many of whom are racial minorities, for extended periods we cripple communities, families and our economy. Once released many are unable to find employment and quickly resort to lives of crime. The Attorney General also announced that the Justice Department would also begin to review sentencing disparities in America, citing a recent study that concluded that black males received sentences that were 20 percent longer than whites convicted of similar offenses. A civil society does not become a safer one by simply prosecuting and incarcerating its citizens. While we must continue to fight criminal behavior, we must also be reasonable in our sentencing polices.

Dallas Peace Center: Support police protests www.DallasPeaceCenter.org

Citizens gathered in front of the Dallas Police Headquarters at 1400 South Lamar on Wednesday to protest the murder of Clinton Allen and call attention to other shootings. The Dallas Peace Center issued a statement about the shooting of Allen and subsequent protests: The Dallas Peace Center is working closely with Collette Flanagan, whose son Clinton Allen was shot to death by Dallas Police Officer Clark Staller on March 10,

2013. Through petition drives, meetings with public officials, letter writing campaigns, and non-violent direct action protests, Mrs. Flanagan, and her supporters are urging District Attorney Craig Watkins to seek an indictment for murder in the case, consistent with the official autopsy report of County Medical Examiner William McClain, M.D., which stated cause of death: homicide. Clinton Allen was unarmed when Officer Staller shot him seven times. Six eyewitnesses had filed sworn affidavits

in the case stating that Mr. Allen was unarmed and not resisting Officer Staller when the shooting occurred. In addition to the indictment of Officer Staller, we are also seeking a federal indictment for civil rights violations, as well as changes in police procedures to prevent the killing of unarmed civilians by police officers. Many citizens are aware of high profile cases of police shootings, including the Dallas case of Santos Rodriguez, and of the Trayvon Martin PAGE 4

case in which the shooter was a "neighborhood watch" coordinator. But the numbers are much higher. In Dallas alone, Clinton Allen is one of more than 60 unarmed men, virtually all of whom are African American and Latino, shot to death by police officers since 2000. In not one of these cases has a Dallas officer been indicted. In fact, the last Dallas police officer indicted for the shooting of an unarmed citizen was in the 1973 Santos Rodriguez murder at the hands of Officer Darrell Cain. !

The Dollars and Sense of MegaFest families together” to the tune of approximately 75,000 attendees. A number that is actually 25,000 more than initially projected. This in the all mighty dollar takes Megafest from a lowly $3,000,000.00 to more than $4,000,000.00 in attendance revenue alone. What most of those who came to the city of Dallas to spend their weekend being fed the word of God didn’t expect was that to get the full MegaFest experience, there were additional tickets to be bought. To attend the Just Churchin’ comedy show the average ticket price was $45. The Women of Purpose concert tickets ranged from $43.50 - $103.50 and the coveted floor seats for Oprah’s Life Class would set you back $253.50. Taking home a piece of the event in the form of DVD was $79 for the Woman Thou Art Loosed session and an additional $79 for Man Power. Therefore, to bring a family of four together at MegaFest with all the bells and whistles, entertainment

Let’s forget for a moment that T.D. Jakes is something of a superman. Sure he can leap tall pulpits in a single bound, speak the gospel at the speed of light and even cause buildings to shake with a mighty praise. But, for the moment let’s forget his super powers and focus on his ability to multi-task. If MegaFest has taught us nothing, it is indeed a lesson in Jakesology. The lesson being that Bishop Thomas Dexter Jakes is neither a preacher, producer, director, leader, talk show host, philosopher, bishop, actor, motivational speaker, savior or entertainer; but all these things, all day every day and extra on Sundays.

Now that the world has witnessed the true power of Jakes’ touch in the form of MegaFest, the re-invention of the church experience is definitely in process. And those looking to benefit from the experience, have to be prepared to pay the cost. From the opening press conference to the closing remarks, the focus of MegaFest 2013 was “bringing PAGE 5

and a couple of take home souvenirs, your weekend tab (not including any travel, hotel or meals) could have easily exceeded $1200.00. A far cry from the initial $220 spent to secure four conference entrance lanyards. Although $1200 may have been more than what most were expecting to shell out, you have to keep in mind that the entertainment line-up was top notch. Tamela Mann, Kurt Carr, Smokie Norful, John P Kee, Joe, Fred Hammond, Tamar Braxton and Jennifer Hudson all brought the music. T.D. Jakes, Sheryl Brady, Jasmine Sculark and Creflo Dollar delivered preaching. Joel and Victoria Osteen were motivators. Cedric the Entertainer and Niecy Nash made you laugh. Serita and Sarah Jakes made you cry. Paula White showed off her story-telling ability to encourage a $113.00 per person offering while Tyler Perry added the knock-out punch with $113 thousand offering. So what did the MegaFest cost to produce? Early budgets for the festival put the production at about $10 million. Of that amount, Phillip Jones of Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau kicked in $500 thousand and the event was also eligible for a state fund for special events to the tune of $2 million. Throw in major funding from sponsors such as McDonald’s Wells

Fargo, Coca Cola, American Airlines, BET, Methodist Health System, Essence/Ebony and about 10 others and there was no shortage of monies available to soften the estimated $10 million blow of getting MegaFest up and going. With a little careful deduction one could probably count the revenue garnered from an event of this magnitude. After all, most if not all of the ticketed events were sold out and not any of the ticket prices were in the $15 range. It’s probably safe to assess that MegaFest saw revenues of at least $22 million. That number could easily put the event in a position to profit somewhere in the neighborhood of $14 million. Today the streets of Dallas Texas are no longer abuzz with the yellow bus markers strategically placed stating “Megafest shuttle” cost $2.50.

Long gone are the black cloth product bags swinging from the arms of out-of-towners, cost $20.00. What’s left is Mayor Mike Rawlings, Phillip Jones and the great and powerful T.D. Jakes sitting at the table of brotherhood reviewing the budget. The monies have been spent; the offerings collected and the tallies are in. Now the city and all the MegaFest powers that be, will take a collective cash flow sigh of relief. Big Things are Happening Here!

He is what I would like to call a social network daddy. In his bios he claims my son (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), but he has only given him $60 his whole life and my baby is about to be two. He barely posts pictures of my child BUT the moment my baby wins a little Instagram baby contest and got a little Instagram fame the dead beat was ready to show off my son. He started stealing pictures from my Instagram page and his cousins pages and reposting them and then he was lying to his followers. One of his followers asked," who styles your son, he is so fresh" and he replied "his mom mostly. " That's when I got mad. The word "mostly" is an understatement coming from that deadbeat . I style my baby completely. That deadbeat has never helped me buy anything concerning our son.

Back then daddy didn’t know “my” baby but now that my baby is blowing up... Dear SMC, So my child's father has never seen my child other than on a social network. His extended family is involved in my son’s life but that's it.

The best answer he could have gave was "his mom does everything completely ...I don't help with anything. " I just want to know how to handle this because it just makes me so mad. ----ABOUT TO SNAP Dear ABOUT TO SNAP In a perfect world dad (mom and kids for that matter) would always do what we want them to do, act how we would like for them to act and be who we want them to be. But, this is not a perfect world, far from it, and you have NO control over what others do. What you can control is you. Don’t allow the next person, regardless of who it is, to diminish a moment of joy that you and your son share. Quite honestly, it’s ok if his Dad is proud. Good, bad or indifferent; he is your son’s father.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

Take the focus off Dad only contributing $60 or his “insinuation” that he played a role in dressing the child, what matters is that you both stop being social media parents and start communicating privately to figure out how to raise a happy, health, secure individual. Dad should be active emotionally, p h y s i c a l l y, s p i r i t u a l l y a n d y e s financially. Not just when the baby is dressed really cute with a really smart caption under his instagram picture. On the other hand, If you want your child to be in the limelight (and obviously you do) don’t be surprised or upset when his father and quite possibly everybody you’ve ever known, wants in on the attention. If you have additional questions about dads who resurface at just the right time, send a friend request to the mothers of Gabby Douglas and Drake.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING When the world seems to have lost its mind, what do you do? When your life is in absolute chaos, how do you handle it? When nothing really makes any sense, where do you go to find clarity in the midst of confusion? As the world is going insane, where do you find sanity? It has become apparent to me that one sure way to invite crazy into your life is to allow some distance between you and God. Personal desperation enters into one’s existence, I believe, when you seek something other than the kingdom of God first. You want to deal with crazy? Simply say hello world. With all that is happening in a world gone mad, it’s not that hard to find yourself lost like the Israelites, wandering around lost. I know I have. Fortunately, with this faith walk thing I’m experiencing, I believe and understand life, or one’s perspective on it, possesses certain consistencies. I am reminded by a minister friend of mine that being a Christian should be a full time job. You don’t get summers off and there is no Spring Break. Don’t misunderstand me. That includes nights and weekends. You can never get too comfortable with how well you think you’re doing in doing God’s will. The reason I say this is because the devil is ever vigilant. That means the world becomes his ammunition to exacerbate your situation. When you get tired, he’s got a bed for you to sleep in. When you’re thirsty, he’s got what you think you need to quench it. When you lose focus, guess who has the perfect maze to seemingly satisfy your imagination? If you’re not careful, you’ll wake up one day thinking you’re close to God, only to find you’ve really got Satan riding shotgun.

The really really good news here is that once God gets your attention, He has a unique way of letting you know when life hits the fan, it’s time to get busy. For me, Mama’s favorite Psalm 23 rises like cream. “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me.” This passage came to me once when chaos reigned and confusion was front and center in my world. I was amazed at how trivial my problems became once I focused on this message and God came knocking. It was the “with me” part that hit home. I realized that somehow for all that I was going through, God wasn’t with me. I had kind of let Him fall by the wayside and you can guess who was playing the role of sidekick. At that moment God let me know somebody was in His seat and He wasn’t having it. It was a moment worth remembering and sharing. I wound up on my face one night in prayer wondering what in the heaven was going on. I thought I was okay. In reality it was the I that was killing me; the I as in ego, pride. I’d forgotten Psalm 22. “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and He rules over all nations.” Right! Immediately I began to close that gap I was speaking about. Once again in prayer I submitted everything I have and everything I own. It’s all His anyway and I am blessed in every respect to know that basic truth because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. I just wish I didn’t always need a refresher course to remind me that my God is able. Yours is too. That fact will help you when you see the madness occurring in this world. When others allow pride, greed, dishonor and the lust for power to lead them, remember not to let yourself succumb to anything except who you are and who you belong to. May God bless and keep you always.

This year as of Dec. 10, Chicago has witnessed 485 killed in gun violence, 125 under the age of 18. As of 2009, there were an estimated 310 million non-military firearms owned in America. The country is saturated with guns. It’s time to take action. None of us is safe in a nation where assault weapons are readily available. We need to revive the ban on assault weapons now.

The horror of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut is beyond comprehension. Twenty children, their teachers and aides, their school principal, shot repeatedly by a 20-year-old wielding a semiautomatic assault weapon. Ask Gwendolyn Baines I want to be pretty like the other girls Dear Gwendolyn: I am 16 and just beginning to date. My mother is a product of ‘not dating’ until the age of 16. Although I had no desire to date until now, waiting was not a problem. I have been to several parties with my girlfriends and they were all asked to dance by a boy, but I had no offers. That bothered me until I looked into my mirror and discovered I was not pretty like the other girls’. Janice Dear Janice, I seldom receive letters from teenagers. So, thank you for having the courage to write to me concerning your problem. Let me tell you this: Are you telling me that you have looked into your mirror all your life and just

SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

discovered you are not pretty? Either something is wrong with your mirror, or something is definitely wrong with you. There is a thing called ‘selfesteem.’ That is your problem and not your mirror. Boys 2 men do have a tendency to lurk after what they consider as beauty. I want you to focus on receiving the highest degrees you can – that is more important than to stop and waste precious time being concerned about your looks. As you move into adulthood, you will see those same girls who are popular with dates looking old, run down, beat out, and ugly. What they once had as beauty will be gone. But for yourself, you will always look elegant and continue to look elegant, as you grow old gracefully. Janice, think about it. Another observation you will come to know is that when young girls your age are popular, believe me, it is not their beauty. These young girls are known to display body parts — other than their face.

VALDER BEEBE SHOW THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW I Don’t Talk About the Stars -- “I Interview the World’s Most Fascinating Celebrities” OPRAH WINFREY NETWORK’s (OWN’s) "WELCOME TO SWEETIE PIE’S" -- Valder talks to Robbie Montgomery, former Ikette (of Ike and Tina Turner) and star of Welcome to Sweetie Pie's. This docu-television series also stars her family and focuses on the running of their collection of soul food restaurants, Sweetie Pie's, with both hilarity and drama offered in equal measure.

Valder Beebe: Congratulations on the high rating of Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Robbie Montgomery: This is truly a blessing. I am truly grateful to God. Valder Beebe: We never know what God has planned for us. I am sure all those years when you were dancing with Ike and Tina Turner you never would have thought you would be at center stage.

Robbie Montgomery: I was always in the background and I was happy there. This is a totally different thing; somehow I ended up in front. God is good and he has blessings for you, and you have to be able to receive. Valder Beebe: I read that you had a problem with your lung that took its toll on you and brought you into the life you have today. Robbie Montgomery: That is correct. My mom would say, “You know where you have been, but you do not know where you are going.” I had health problems, and I got sarcoidosis in the midst of my singing career. So I said, “What do I do next?” My mom was a great cook and taught me how to cook. I also took Home Economics (they call it Culinary now), so I was an excellent cook. I’ve learned the Lord gives you talents, so I used my other talents. And with a lot of praying, Sweetie Pie’s was born. Valder Beebe: Now you’re on one of the most well-known and popular networks, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Robbie Montgomery: It’s a blessing; and to have my family involved is a blessing. Yes, Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s is about a family running restaurants and giving second chances and trying to feed the world. We have an exoffender program to help give to others. Valder Beebe: You are a role model telling us that life is not over after 40. Robbie Montgomery: I am 73 and I am still going and I am still dreaming. Watch Sweetie Pie’s on OWN on Saturdays.

Jamille Bradfield One on One with Kevin Hart Film critic Jami#e Bradfield recently sat down with Kevin Hart to discuss his film, KEVIN HART: LET ME EXPLAIN. JB: Let’s get right down to it. You have a new movie in theatres right now. KH: Yes I do. JB: KEVIN HART: LET ME EXPLAIN. Tell us about this project. I assume after the success of LAUGH AT MY PAIN you went out on your next international comedy concert tour and you decided to film this. Was it just a no brainer after LAUGH AT MY PAIN? Tell me how this project came to be. KH: It was definitely an immediate thought after LAUGH AT MY PAIN. Because LAUGH AT MY PAIN was so successful, we put it in such a small amount of theatres and you know, the movie popped the way it did, it was an immediate reaction to say okay, let me explain I want to do bigger, I want to do better. So, uh, this tour came together. Man, it took me about a year, a year and some change to kind of put the material together and get it where I wanted it before I was willing to film it. And in doing it, I mean, this is my best work to date. I’m more than proud of it. JB: It’s hilarious. KH: I’m standing on it as a great representation of where I am in my career right now as far as a comedian. Uh, I’m loving it man. I’m loving the fact that I’m not afraid to put my life out there and be honest with my fans and I think in return my fans appreciate it and you know, they gravitate towards me even more because I’m relatable and real. JB: At the end of the movie, you have a real, heartfelt, kind of emotional, very powerful moment there that I think all of the fans, at least in the audience I was sitting with, felt it. And you share about just the level of success of playing The Garden. And you belong to an elite group of comedians who have successfully done that. Talk to me about, what is it like?

I mean, you know, a man from North Philadelphia who used to sell shoes, apparently quite well (KH smiling), and now you are…Kevin Hart. What does that feel like? KH: You can’t really put it into words. You know, you’re looking at a guy who has worked hard to get to where he is and at that moment I realized the benefits of my hard work. And I saw people who were really appreciating me for my craft and you know a talent that I’m trying my hardest to perfect. And I saw people who have supported me for a long time, who’ve grown with me and at that point, uh, of course getting emotionally caught in the fact that I was at Madison Square Garden and we sold out two shows, we did 30,000 people and these people came out to hear jokes, to hear a man tell jokes. JB: Wow, yeah. KH: It’s unreal. It’s a great feeling. It’s, it’s history. You know, you’re looking at putting yourself in history books. So that’s what that moment was all about for me. It was literally realizing all of that at that time, at that moment and I got caught up in that emotional moment. You know, I didn’t care I allowed my fans to see it and kept it in the film. JB: Well it was very real. We felt it. KH: Thank you. It was real. You can’t make that up. JB: Where does your material come from? A lot of it seems like it’s your life story, life experiences. KH: Life experiences. Everything is what I’ve done. You’re looking at stories from my current and past life that literally I talk about. That’s my therapy. When I go through

Support Black -owned bookstores

things, I put it on stage, good or bad. And like I said that makes you relatable and I think when you’re relatable people want to see you more because you’re a regular guy. You’re not a superhero. You’re not untouchable. You’re not on a pedestal. You’re a regular guy. Difference is that I’m just on TV. But I have the same problems that you have. I go through the same things that you go through. Just on a different level, that’s all. JB: I’m curious to know, what were you like as a child? I think people would assume you were a class clown. KH: I was. JB: And the second part of that question is, I know you’re a parent, I’m a parent as well, a lot of people out there who have kids, and what advice would you give to other parents out there who have kids and you’re trying to see if, do they have some natural gift of being funny or are they just… you know we always want to quickly discipline kids for being silly but they might really have a talent. KH: Well when you’re a kid, you’re silly as is. I think funny is funny. You can’t teach funny. Either you have it or you don’t. I think those that have it, you know. But funny is also within personality. Uh, you know, charming personalities, softer personalities, aggressive personalities, it depends on who you are. My kids are funny. They’re naturally funny. Um, does that mean they don’t get in trouble? No. You do dumb stuff you get in trouble for dumb stuff. As a child, I did dumb stuff and I got in trouble for the dumb stuff that I’ve done. As you get older, you laugh as those dumb mistakes and as an adult you realize why they were funny. You can pick them apart and say, “Wow, that was really dumb when I did that,” and then you can laugh. And that’s what I’ve done. I look back on my life and I’m basically telling stories of my past, what was good, what was bad, but I’m picking out the moments that were funny and sharing it with people, that’s all. So my advice as a parent is let your kid be a kid, but if they do

something dumb, punish them for being dumb at the end of the day. JB: What can we expect in the coming months? I know you’ve got a lot of projects in the works both on the film and TV side? Of course with your TV series, Real Husbands of Hollywood. What’s coming up that people can expect? KH: What’s coming up…a movie called GRUDGE MATCH which is coming out at Christmas. Another movie called ABOUT LAST NIGHT, a movie called RIDE ALONG, THINK LIKE A MAN 2. About to start filming a movie called THE BEST MAN INC. Season 2 of Real Husbands of Hollywood. Getting ready to do a movie with Will Ferrell, another one with Seth Rogen, it’s a lot of stuff. JB: You’re busy. KH: Very busy. JB: What do you do when you’re not working whenever that is? KH: With my kids, with my family, nothing else. JB: Okay. My last question…let’s say there’s a last supper of comedians and you could have dinner with three comedians of your choice, dead or alive, to talk about anything, who would you pick and why? KH: I would pick Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle. That’s who I would pick. JB: Why those three? KH: Uh, just because the conversation could be…you know what, actually I would take Dave out and put Bill Cosby in there because I know that there’s such a contrast of personalities and of approaches to stand-up comedy, so it’ll be good just to hear why certain people chose certain routes and didn’t choose this route and what made this person this guy and this person that guy, just to hear it, just soak it up like a sponge. You’re looking at three unbelievable talents and all who were great in their own right. View the video at www.sceneityet.com.

In our library How A Dream + A Storage Unit + Amazon Became The Story Behind A Story That Changed A Life Colorado Springs, CO, - Lisa Renèe Jones was CEO of the highly acclaimed LRJ Staffing Services, with offices all over Texas and in Nashville, getting a 6-figure salary and recognition from the Austin Business Journal, Dallas Woman magazine and the #7 spot on Entrepreneur magazine’s Top 10 Growing Womenowned Business List, when she did the unthinkable – followed her heart, took a giant leap of faith into the

unknown…and never looked back! Not that the road was easy – far from it - but Lisa’s passion to become a writer was a hunger in her soul that wouldn’t quit. Raising two boys and caring for her father-in-law, she decided to sell her business and as she looked for a way to pay the bills in the meantime, she stumbled upon an article about buying and selling merchandise from storage auctions – years before it became cool and popular enough to have a TV show about it. The turning point came when Lisa’s boyfriend Diego lost his job. As she was selling off every valuable item she owned to pay bills, he bought an auctioned storage unit. Upset at first over what he paid, she soon changed her mind when she saw the profit they netted but it was ‘dirty work’ rummaging through often disgusting items, trying to find something of value.

amille Bradfield

PAGE 18

!

The inspiration behind Lisa’s bestselling Inside Out series came when Diego found a journal in a box from one of the units. Engrossed in the details of the journal writer’s life, he suggested that Lisa write a mystery using the idea of a journal found in a storage unit. Already writing aroundthe-clock just to survive, Lisa wrote a proposal, presented it to one of her editors and as they were waiting for his boss to read it, her Tall, Dark and Deadly series took off! Doing really well at this point, Lisa took the journal story to another New York editor but declined both his lowball offer and the changes he wanted to make to the story, believing she could do better. She found an agent with a strong foreign rights department and the whole project finally came together. When the series was released there were many publishers involved in the bidding – and she closed on the

SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

deal 10 days after release! There followed movie and TV interest and talks with producers, but it was decided the TV deal was the best for this series. After the first book in the series was optioned for television, Lisa teamed up with Dan and Laura Dotson, stars of Storage Wars, to present Behind Closed Doors: An Inside Out Novella; an exciting free serialized mystery that is appearing on storagetreasures.com. Lisa is quick to credit Amazon with helping her get established and giving her the confidence to refuse that first deal (especially since the editor’s proposed changes were the very things the TV folks liked most about the series) or she wouldn’t be the success she is today! While this amazing chain of events began with a journal found in a storage unit, it became the inspiration for the ‘story behind the story’ that changed Lisa Renèe Jones’ life forever.

Dupard started a fitness regimen and changed her unhealthy eating habits to decrease her medical-history health risks such as high blood pressure, lupus, arthritis and high cholesterol. Her husband Reggie Dupard, a retired NFL player, was able to reduce his blood pressure and cholesterol numbers after he got involved with the FFL program. "After watching my husband's health start to decline and then losing a very close co-worker two days after her gastric bypass, I was driven to do something to help those close to me and to spread the word on how positive eating and fitness changes in your life style can improve and extend your life." Marion Jones forfeited the five trackand-field medals she won at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia after she admitted in 2007 that she took performance-enhancing drugs and served a six-month jail sentence in 2008. Jones will be talking about "Responsibility, Redemption, and Resilience" during her keynote address. "It is important for people to know that it's possible to make a mistake in your life, but it's what you do after the mistake

that people are going to remember you by," Jones says on her website. Carol Woods credits the first FFL Expo in 2012 with changing her life and helping her to win the Ms. Bikini Mama title in the Lonestar State Natural Bodybuilding competition in Azle, Texas on June 22, 2013. Carol was an out-ofshape spinning instructor when she heard 77-year-old bodybuilder Ernestine Shepherd speak at the 2012 FFL Expo. Shepherd will return to speak again this year. "That expo motivated me to make life style, nutritional and fitness changes to better my life. I have lost more than 30 pounds since then," said Carol Woods. Woods says she promotes health awareness at Kilgore Baptist Church where her husband is pastor and also a bodybuilder. Mostly, FFL attracts people who just want to develop a healthy life style like Janice Simon. Simon is bringing more than a dozen people from Oberlin, Louisiana to the FFL Expo. Janice heard LaChanda and Reggie Dupard speak in Oberlin, Louisiana last year. Simon started the exercise group "Team Determined." She credits FFL with helping her drop 30 of the 180 pounds she needs to lose while eliminating the need for one of her three high-bloodpressure medications. "I have been a crash dieter and struggled with food all my life. Fit and Faithful Living has helped me to break bad food patterns," said Janice Simon. “The FFL website and Facebook page provide our group with valuable information." Other Fit and Faithful Living Expo speakers include:

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
