Lack of communication usually lands in the top five reasons for divorces or relationships ending, along with finances and irreconcilable differences. During a recent interview, Drs. Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt talked about what makes their marriage successful. Admitting that it wasn’t always easy and they had their share of “unsafe Cheryl Smith conversations,” the two will share their experiences at a workshop for couples at St. Philip’s School & Community Center, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Sunny South Dallas on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11, 2014 Seating is limited to 150 couples for “Safe Conversations: Moving from conflict to connection.” This free workshop is presented in English and Spanish, with dinner and lunch provided. For those couples with children, no need to worry because childcare is also provided at no cost to parents. Seems like many excuses for not attending have been taken care of. Here’s an opportunity to gain invaluable insight into helping strengthen your relationship and when you consider the dismal marital statistics, especially in our communities, along with the high rate of domestic violence reports, we need all the help we can get. We’re living during a time where people would rather fight and kill than have meaningful discussions. Couples spend more time planning the wedding or working out deals for the divorce, than learning how to effectively communicate. Sadly our young are following in our footsteps. Many are lacking in basic communication skills, thus more and more “bullying” cases are dominating headlines and newscasts. Something has to be done and now! It’s not enough to say “keep your hands to yourself,” “no cussing,” or “pay attention.” That’s what makes this workshop so important! With over 40 years of experience as a therapist, educator, clinical trainer, author and lecturer Dr. Hendrix and his wife, Helen LaKelly Hunt, co-created Imago Relationship Therapy, a therapy for couples now practiced by over 2000 certified therapists in 30 countries. The two have co-authored 10 books on intimate relationships and parenting, including their most recent book Making Marriage Simple. Referred to by Oprah Winfrey as the “Marriage Whisperer,” Dr. Hendrix has been featured on Ms. Winfrey’s show 18 times-- one where she won her first Emmy for “most socially redemptive” daytime talk show. For the past four years, Dr. Hendrix has been working to ignite a global movement to educate people about the value of healthy, intimate relationships. Dr. Hunt, who has been married to Dr. Hendrix for over 30 years, has also been active within the women’s movement, helping to catalyze and grow the area of women’s philanthropy. Five years ago, she co-founded Women Moving Millions, a global movement of donors with the goal of raising the bar on women’s giving. Dr. Hunt is an honored inductee in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca, NY. She is the author of, Faith and Feminism: A Holy Alliance, published by Atria books, and the recent article, “Healthy Marriage: Healthy Women and Girls,” inviting the women’s movement to take up equality in marriage as an agenda. She says her greatest passion is deepening her relationships with her husband and their six children. One technique that I found to be especially rewarding is one the couple says they practice daily. “We decided that each night before we go to bed, we tell each other three things we appreciate about one another,” said Dr. Hendrix, adding that they both feel that the exercise is very rewarding. I’ve tried it at home with my family and it does give you a good feeling so I am sure it has a positive impact on those who I show appreciation for. Tell Everyone About the Affordable Care By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

All of us must continue to support the Affordable Care Act and the opportunity that it provides for nearly six million Texans to purchase affordable health care coverage for the first time. The six month enrollment period ends in March and many of our friends, neighbors, and relatives who are eligible have not signed up. We must spread the word in our churches, our neighborhood association meetings, our social events, and even in our grocery stores that people can get coverage by utilizing the federally-run exchange in Texas. Twenty-six percent of all Texas residents lack health care coverage. This is the largest percentage in the country. The Affordable Care Act is a solution that allows our fellow Texans to get the coverage they need. Coverage of the uninsured is also in the best interest of those who already have coverage for themselves and their families. The cost of care rises for taxpayers when the uninsured and underinsured rely on emergency rooms for treatments that could have been

avoided by preventive care with a primarycare physician. Enrollment figures have risen in states in which local oﬃcials have worked with the federal government. For instance, Kentucky has

They realize that the law benefits their constituents. The Affordable Care Act makes sense. It gives relief to families and businesses in Texas.

It allows families to shop for plans that fit their individual needs. It even provides subsidies for those who can demonstrate that they have a financial need. It protects consumers from inflated deductibles and unreasonable co-pays. It allows students to remain on their family’s plans until they reach the age of 26. It takes the management of health care out of the hands of insurance companies, and places it in the hands of health care providers. While there have been some minor setbacks in the rollout of the website, the law is still eﬀective and necessary in our country. Let’s all urge our friends, family, and neighbors to visit the website, www.healthcare.gov, which is now running eﬀectively. For those without internet access you can contact healthcare navigators at various non-profits who have been contracted by the federal government to assist those searching assistance. We should build on and support President Obama’s quest for health care coverage for all.

God is a stand up guy; your turn By James A. Washington I recently heard a phrase a minister friend of mine used to say all the time. He even wrote it in a book so I wouldn’t forget it. We usually get into this kind of a conversation because I’m confused about something and seek his biblical awareness to bring clarity out of my spiritual ignorance. He constantly tells me to remember that a “setback is more often than not, a setup for a comeback.” Like I said he’s a minister so his reference is God, who he says presents you with what you think are setbacks, so He can set you up for a spiritual comeback. It sounds simple enough but at its core, this is pretty powerful stuﬀ to digest. It means for those of us, who profess a faith based upon the life and death and eternal life of Jesus Christ, that even in the most dire of circumstances, God is ever present. It’s a useful key to our salvation, if we’ll only use it. Let me explain as best I can. When we are surprised, or tricked, or easily enticed back into our ‘own ways of handling this physical world’ and we fail miserably in our own eyes, it can be tough to acknowledge our failure as so called followers of Christ. The result can make us shy away from what Christ has promised us. Do you remember what would happen to you if you got caught doing something as a child you had no business doing? You knew what would happen if Mama, Big Mama or Madear

found out about it. If the truth be told, we also knew how much it would hurt them, because deep down inside we knew they knew we knew better. They had imprinted us with a moral compass that gave us character and pointed us in the right direction when everyone else was going the wrong way. Punishment aside, the “I’m sorry” that was due them was also sincere and understood, as such, for ourselves. We knew that we knew we were wrong even at a young age. We knew better and it hurt to admit that to those who loved us and to ourselves. For the Christian who makes the sincere eﬀort and still falls short, the reality of what I just described can be overwhelming and therefore seem impossible to do. You’ve still got to admit to God and yourself that you screwed up. What you did was wrong. Say “I’m sorry” and realize as you did with Big Mama, that she still loved you no matter how disappointed she was in you. She loved you not only enough to forgive you, but also because she knew you

knew you were wrong because she taught you better. God too, also knows that He has made a diﬀerence in your character. We are taught through Christ that His imprint on our souls is indelible and His forgiveness is eternal. But hold on a second. That does not exempt you from standing up and doing the ‘I’m sorry thing.’ It’s a spiritual must. The bible says, “They refused to listen and fail to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiﬀ necked and in their rebellion appoint a leader in order to return to slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to answer and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them…even when they committed awful blasphemies.” Nehemiah 9:17. Just like those who loved you, God never deserts you. Just like them, He never gives up on you. When we understand this, then we know through it all, there’s only one place to take your sins, even the ones we committed yesterday or this morning, yes, even the ones we want to hide from. It’s right and He expects us to without saying a thing because He knows we know better. Coming to Him with this only validates who He is and who we are to Him. It’s an eternal love thing. May God bless and keep you always.

Ask Alma! Husband still hits the clubs, without me Dear Alma, I recently got married to a man I dated for six years. We have a wonderful relationship—open and trusting—and I couldn’t ask for anything more. However, he likes to go quite often (about once a week) to the club. I’m never invited. He acts as if it would be a sin if I were to go with him. Sometimes he doesn’t get home until after midnight. I will trust him until he gives me a reason not to. If I were to go out in the same way with my girlfriends, he would get irate, wondering what I’m doing, who we’re with, etc. When he tells me he’s going out, I never get mad (I definitely don’t want him going to a club mad at me!). I just don’t know if I should start “putting my foot down,” so to speak. How can I get him to see things from my perspective? For all I know, he could be in another woman’s bed! All I have to go on is trust. What do you think?— Left at home, Wash. D.C. Hey Now Lefty, I think the same thing you think. You just want me to say it. You aren’t doing yourself or your husband any favors by not telling the truth about how you feel. If an issue doesn’t sit well with you, you

should be straightforward. Honesty helps to build a genuine and trustworthy commitment. If simply loving somebody could make a person do or be better, we’d all be doing the right thing, ‘cause we all got somebody who loves us. You asked if you should put your foot down? Hello-o-o, you’re still standing on your tippy toes right now, so you’re not in a position to put your foot down. You lead him to believe that his clubbing is fine with you. To make matter worse, you even send him off with a kiss on the cheek and a smile. Because, like you said, you don’t want to send him to the club mad. Don’t be angry with him for doing what he’s doing when you’ve told him it’s alright to do it. Don’t get me wrong; I understand what you’re saying, and I agree with you. I wouldn’t want my husband at the club either. But this should have been discussed and clarified early on. First things first: Start telling the truth. I’d suggest you take the time to tell him how you really feel. There’s no need to be hostile. Part of this is your fault, so you need to come clean with patience in one hand and understanding in the other. An old Chaka Khan song comes to mind—Once you get started, snap, snap, Ooooh, it’s hard to stoppppp, yea, you just can’t stop now!!! (Sorry, I lost my train of thought.) Maybe he can go to the club every other week, or maybe you can go with him. The two of you need to decide what’s best. I don’t think he’ll stop right away, but I’m sure there’s a place in the middle that will satisfy both of you.

HALL: Put $5 On It! By Vincent L. Hall

Whereas, this may not sound like your traditional resolution for the New Year, I have never held myself out as a “Negro of traditional thought or logic.” With bad economic news all around us and especially for the poor, I want you to resolve yourself to put $5 on it. Put more on it if you can. Here’s an example. So like, I’m standing at the checkout of a QT station (because they have excellent service and free air for your tires) and this guy walks in. He’s a hulking looking brother, in a uniform and he asks for $5 in gas. After passing the clerk four rustled ones, he handed her an assortment of change. “Make it $5.32” he whispers. As God or the good spirits would have it, I saw this brother when he rolled up to the pump. It was obvious he was scraping for cash. He needed to get to work, but going to work costs money too. “Bruh man” was obviously flustered, and after being unemployed for 13 of the last 24 months I get it. But don’t cry for me, because the chorus of the chronically unemployed

and underemployed is a growing one. Save your tears for those who live in generational poverty. Especially the children; excuse me "Our children."

Meanwhile, the GOP and Tea Party wings of Satan’s Army deny them help, knowing full well that every dollar expended would go right back into America’s anemic economy.

Rather than cackling all that caca about creating a false sense of security and slothfulness, the Republicans in Congress should pass the extension of benefits for long term unemployment. When you think about the 1.4 million nationally that will lose benefits, think locally as well. A recent study says 7968 people in Dallas County will lose their benefits. But extrapolate that number with affected households which have children, spouses and dependents. There could be 30,000 of your neighbors at even greater risk.

These victims, your neighbors or possibly you, will be forced to hit the local social service agencies and churches. They will be joining lines that are already too long in a city of “misplaced priorities.” Hell yeah I said it… misplaced priorities. At a time when poverty is in full bloom, we find money for a blossoming Arts District. Nothing against art, but the Dallas I know can support both. Mayor Mike Rawlings would agree. The Urban League of Greater Dallas and like organizations are emaciating for lack of funds because

the United Way coffers have been devastated by a lack of giving. The big donors have decreased and obviously with unemployment being high, there are fewer workers who can or do contribute. Let me get back to my story, because I want you to know what I mean when I say put $5 on it. Just as the brother leaves the cashier, I asked her to add an extra $10 of petro on me. Now those of you who are genetically or sociologically akin to Scrooge will scoff at what I did, let me explain. There is no greater feeling in the world than being recognized or appreciated for making an earnest effort. That‘s what this brother was doing and I wanted him to know that I feel his pain and appreciate his endurance. I learned this method of low budget, surprise philanthropy from my friend John Wiley Price 30 years ago. See a need, cover what you can, don’t expect or wait for praise. What will surprise you is how richly you will be blessed. No matter what happens, I never have much, but I can put $5 on it. Bruh man smiled as the pump passed the $5.32 mark. Be it therefore resolved!!

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

2013 was the year of African American biopics. From kidnapped free man Solomon Northrup’s story in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, to Eugene Allen’s life on which Lee Daniel’s THE BUTLER is loosely based. To close out the year, we can add another amazing film to that list — MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. Directed by Justin Chadwick and adapted to the big screen by William Nicholson from Mandela’s autobiography of the same title, MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM chronicles South African President Nelson Mandela’s early life, coming of age and adulthood. English actor Idris Elba brilliantly portrays the role of Nelson Mandela and English actress Naomie Harris, also gives an outstanding performance as Winnie Mandela. The coincidences of the leading roles both going to natives of England who both happen to be blessed with head-turning looks, is well, just that…a coincidence. Their acting chops are in a word undeniable, and their on-screen chemistry and transformations into these real life icons are dead-on. One of the things I most appreciated about this film was the glimpse into who Nelson Mandela, the man, the lawyer, the son, the husband, and the father was, long before he took up the anti-apartheid fight. I am certain audiences everywhere were a little surprised to learn how much of a ladies’ man the civil rights’ activist was before he settled down with his first wife, Evelyn Mase Mandela (played by Terry Pheto). The story unfolds with Nelson Mandela as a young boy at what appears to be a traditional boys-tomen-coming-of-age ceremony. It quickly advances to his early adult years where we see Mandela in action as a young lawyer and a bit of a ladies man until he meets Evelyn. Mandela and Evelyn had two sons and two daughters together. During his first marriage he joined the ANC and began taking on an active leadership role in the organization. PAGE 10

As his schedule became busier with protest efforts, his 14-year marriage suffered due to his growing absence at home. The two divorced in 1958 — the same year he met and eventually married his second wife, Winnie Madikizela, who was 16 years his junior. Nelson and Winnie had two daughters. Nelson’s union with Winnie marked a pivotal point in his life. Dissatisfied with the lack of results they were getting with a non-violent movement, the ANC transformed to a more militant group and began bombing buildings to get their oppressors attention and send a message. These actions, however, prompted Nelson Mandela to go on the run from authorities. Of course, he was eventually captured, tried, convicted and sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island in South Africa. Winnie, initially committed to Nelson, took over his leadership role in the fight and his adult daughters launched a “Free Mandela” campaign, a cry for justice that was heard ‘round the world. As the years passed, Winnie became far more militant than Nelson ever was and it began to drive them apart. Another interesting thing the film captured was how Mandela’s natural leadership abilities spilled over into his prison stay, even influencing the prison staff to provide the inmates with long pants instead of the standard prison-issued shorts. One jailer in particular actually grew to respect Mandela and gave him special privileges during his incarceration. As South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement grew bloodier and more fatal, State President F.W. de Klerk, made a move that would forever change history in the segregated nation. After an initial, conditional release of Mandela to help President de Klerk and his administration figure out a non-violent solution to ending the apartheid system of segregation, he ordered the permanent release of Nelson Mandela from prison. Once freed and reunited with his family, he and Winnie put on a front for the public but clearly they were no longer in love. The film closes after Mandela successfully runs for President and became the first black president of South Africa, a position he held from 1994 to 1999. In real life, the 95-year-old world leader who battled health issues in his latter years, passed away on December 5, 2013, a mere 20 days

before the film’s worldwide theatrical release on Christmas Day. It almost seems as if he lived just long enough to see the film’s production through to completion.
