Most importantly- it’s made in America! “Almost 200 million tablets and eReader devices have been sold worldwide,â€? said Mindy Saintsing, VP of Marketing at Bamboosa. “Now consumers are looking for a more comfortable way to use them without holding them or propping them on their laps or knees. We think this product delivers on that promise better than any other we have seen. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and made in America!â€? The Lap Log is made of sustainable materials, including certified organic 100% cotton twill and naturally grown buckwheat hulls. Income Inequality must be addressed for America to move forward By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Income inequality poses a tremendous threat to the American way of life, and the future of our nation. As long as increasing numbers of people are excluded from relative prosperity there will always be social uncertainty, and an inability by many to improve their economic standing. A study by the Congressional Budget Office found that income grew by 275 percent for the top one percent of American households between 1979 and 2007. The growth rate for the bottom 20 percent of American households was only 18 percent during that same period. The top ten percent of wage earners in our country earn half of the income that is produced, according to economists at the University of California at Berkeley. Leading economic thinkers and financial analysts have rightly concluded that this overwhelming concentration of wealth in the hands of a few will result in a society that is more unequal and unjust. They say that such a situation will inevitably lead to economic instability, and a sluggish growth rate. With all of the abundant wealth that exists in our country, it

is inexcusable that 46 million of our fellow citizens live in poverty, including 16 million children, according to the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan.

Unlike many of the Republican leaders in Texas and those in Congress, President Johnson believed that fighting poverty was a moral obligation. Programs introduced by President Johnson helped to reduce the number of Americans living below the poverty line by 43 percent. Today, nearly 18 percent of all Texas residents live in poverty. It is simply unacceptable! While there are a few who are doing very well in our country, we have millions of people in our midst who are just holding on. We

Rather than expending so much energy in attempting to kill the Affordable Care Act, Republican legislators should focus their attention on job creation, and other measures that will help to create a robust economy. Political and religious figures, including Pope Francis, President Obama and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, have recently spoken out against income equality in the country and the world. “We are called to put an end to economic and social inequalities that threaten to unravel the city

that we love,” Mayor de Blasio said during his inaugural address on January 1st. In a major religious position paper Pope Francis wrote that economic systems which produce income inequalities challenge the very foundation of a safe and democratic world. He described such systems as “unjust at its roots.” Our President has said that “increased inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe.” I could not agree with him more. As legislators we must strive to create jobs for our people, and we must pursue a livable minimum wage. As a society, we cannot allow citizens who have worked hard for income security to be pushed aside and treated as though they were insignificant. This is not who we are as a country. This is not what we stand for, and what we represent around the world. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

#MLKDay WASHINGTON, DC -- Those who provided remarks at this year's National Action Network (NAN) MLK Breakfast did a great job of underscoring the universality of Rev. Dr. King's legacy. A broad range of speakers from a wide cross-section of American life each found something in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings or speeches to support his or her interpretation of "The Dream." As you might imagine, hearing Dr. King's words from such a diverse array of speakers was ultimately uplifting and satisfying, and I believe everyone in attendance left feeling refortified. Then reality set in... "Too many corporations do business in our communities and don't treat us fairly and equitably," offered National Action Network Founder Rev. Al Sharpton. "We cannot tolerate such practices." Rev. Sharpton's take on the inequity of the marketplace resonates especially sharply with the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC). Every day our member chambers call on us to help open doors of access to corporations that rely on Black consumers in their communities. It seems that more and more, the very corporations that so proudly incorporate snippets from Dr. King's historic "Dream" speech into their advertisements commemorating the annual MLK Day celebration are less and less interested in supporting the causes and organizations important to the communities they earn dollars from. Upon receiving the NAN's MLK Merit Award, National Organization for Women (NOW) President Terry O'Neill,

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington

Some time ago I wrote about the beginning of my “Faith Walk.” Now hopefully with a little more spiritual maturity, the term means more to me today than it did then. Maybe you’ve heard people talk about a transformative process as they begin to have a different view of the world because they’ve moved from unsaved to saved. Walk seems to be a good description for continued enlightenment and personal growth. The walk reference just really intrigues me. For whatever it is, I would simply say, to me, it is serious and very tangible. If you think about it, the bible had many a truth revealed during a walk, on a journey, while going from

comfort with Dr. King and his nonviolent approach to gaining social and economic justice. Vice President Joe Biden captured it well in his remarks to those of us at breakfast. In essence, he said, "The Civil Rights Movement did as much for White people as it did for Black people because it freed their souls... Where do we go from here? one place to another, or in the mental traveling of a dream. And why not? What is more meaningful than a walk with someone you respect, admire, love or know you can learn a lot from? One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was to walk with either one of my children when they were toddlers. There was something about them discovering and exploring the world around them with no fear because they knew I was with them every step of the way. Have you ever witnessed this? Have you ever been a part of the experience of walking and talking with another human being with whom you are in total sync? I just have to believe that must be one of the reasons people refer to discovering God as being on a journey, a walk in faith, if you will. I just now believe that the effort to get closer to God requires movement. It’s a fact for me. I think the walk reference is probably an excellent description of trying to follow a spiritual direction laid down by Christ. The best example I can think of is Enoch. Enoch walked with God; then he

can literally be interpreted as a way to connect to God. You can walk with Him as Enoch did. So when you get up in the morning, let go and let God order your steps. Just remember listening is a priority. They say faith comes by hearing the Word of God. What better way to hear than to take a stroll with the Lord, so He can guide, suggest, tell and maybe even command us to walk His way. Try it. Trust me God will show up in some of the strangest places, in some strange faces. One thing is for sure. If you intentionally start out deliberately looking for Him, you will not be alone for long. Walking in faith, like any journey worth taking, starts with the proverbial first step. “This is what the Lord says: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…” Jeremiah 6:16 May God bless and keep you always.

!

was no more because God took him away.” Genesis 5:24. The bible talks about walking humbly, walking in Light, walking with the wise, walking together, walking in counsel and walking on water. The point seems to be that life is a journey, and being able to actually walk and talk with God is a desirable and wonderful thing. The fact that He might just talk back is the blessing waiting to happen. Searching for Him while we are here on earth is part of one’s spiritual awakening. It is a testament to one’s faith. Once you take the first step life changes. You change. I know I did. I guess when you look at it that way, I should know all about walking in faith. A Faith Walk is both a public and a private acknowledgment that you are letting God order your steps through this world. I’m relatively sure that if you can do that, He will lead you right to Him. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12. So this walk thing !

Faith - for sure - plays a big role in everything Black America has endured on the way to social justice guaranteed by federal law. And a fair minimum wage, income equality and healthcare should have enough universal appeal to begin gaining support from across the political spectrum. Economic justice continues to be elusive. The USBC will continue to advocate for more opportunity in contracting and wider access to the capital necessary to start and grow businesses. We are committed to doing all we can to make sure Black-owned businesses and the chambers that support them have access to the training and resources that make them better able to prepare this and future generations of entrepreneurs. Why are we so certain that our approach to our mission is on target? In Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos Or Community, Dr. King said it best: "... The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands, when he has the assurance that his income is stable and certain, and when he knows that he has the means to seek selfimprovement."

What Parents Should Know about Cervical Cancer and the HPV Vaccine By the National Cancer Institute We can vaccinate our children against chicken pox, measles, and the flu. And more recently a vaccine has become available that lets parents give their children a new leg up against disease—a vaccine to prevent some types of cancer. We know that a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer and some other cancers. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Most HPV infections go away on their own, but long-lasting infections with certain HPV types can lead to cancer. The good news is that vaccines are available that prevent infection with the HPV types that cause most cervical cancers and other HPVassociated cancers. Vaccination against HPV is especially important for African Americans and Latinos, because these communities have a higher rate of cervical cancer than other populations.

HPV, and Gardasil® also prevents infection with the HPV types that cause most genital warts. Gardasil® is the most commonly available vaccine in the United States. It should be given to both girls and boys between the ages of 11 to 12 (although girls as young as 9 can get the vaccine, as can older boys and girls and young adults who have not previously been

However, the vaccines need to be given before first infection with HPV in order to prevent cancer, so it is important that your child be vaccinated before he or she becomes sexually active. Your child's doctor can give you more information about HPV vaccine options and timing. Free Tax Centers is just one of the ways we do that,” said Tim McKinney, President of United Way of Tarrant County. “The

average cost to have taxes prepared electronically through a paid service is $300, and with our electronic filing, they are able to get their refund back just as fast. We want low-to-moderate income families and individuals to know they have a no cost tax preparation alternative without sacrificing the quality of service they receive.” Free Tax Centers’ volunteer tax preparers receive certification through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and are trained to ensure filers get their maximum allowable refund. Each volunteer tax preparer is recertified each year regardless of experience or background. Volunteers serve in other roles, such as intake specialists and interpreters. For information about volunteering or to get involved, visit www.freetaxesdfw.com. Families and individuals with an annual household income of

$50,000 or less or who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) qualify for Free Tax Centers services. the Louisville program into champions.’’ It’s hard to imagine the top two programs in this state (Texas and Texas A&M with Kevin Sumlin) being led by black men. Say it ain’t so in this republican state. How could this be? “If you are true to your word and who you are and what you’re about, it’s about picking the best people to do the job regardless of the color of their skin,’’ said former Longhorns’ great and Hall of Famer Earl Campbell. “If you believe in the person, it shouldn’t be about

look past color and make this happen. It’s good to see that the process worked without restrictions and limitations.’’ As much as they probably would hate to admit, the recent success and excitement that Sumlin has had in two short years at Texas A&M also may have helped to pave the way in this decision to bring Strong on board at Texas. “I didn’t see this one coming,’’ said Sylvester Croom, the first black coach in the Southeastern Conference at Mississippi State. “But I think it is a great hire. I’ve known Charlie for a long time, and he

Often times, progress is measured by how far one has come…Instead, it should be measured by how far one has to go. In these ever-changing times, the measuring stick can once again be pulled out with the hiring of Charlie Strong as the new Texas football coach. It is indeed a milestone hiring. “Yes, this is a historical day,’’ Strong said. “There’s always going to be a first. But I don’t look at it as I’m the first. I want to look at it as being a coach. And that’s the way I want to be treated.’‘ That’s all well and said. But there is no denying the significance of Texas hiring a black head football coach. Remember, Texas was the last all-white national championship team (1969) in college football. Julius Whittier became the school’s first black letterman the following season. “This is a historic day for the University of Texas, and a historic hire for our football team, ‘’ said school president Bill Powers, who was beaming at Strong’s introductory press conference. “He transformed PAGE 9

“He has a great resume. And he made the most of his opportunity as a head coach at Louisville to put himself in this position. Charlie is a football guy. All of that other nonsense about how he doesn’t get along with the media is a media driven thing. He’ll do just fine if he wins. When he wins, he won’t have to worry about being a politician. They are bringing him in there to win games and get the program back into national contention. He’ll do just fine. He prepared himself for this opportunity.’’ the color of their skin. “I’m proud of my school for picking the best person and the right guy for the job. The fact that he (Strong) is black just gives me an added since of pride that this great university would

Louisville to put himself in this position. He prepared himself for this opportunity.’’ There still are so many black people in this state who hold ill will toward the University of Texas from days not so long ago when they weren’t welcome at the school. Those bitter feelings just don’t go away so easily and they cut deep. It is a common theme for black people of that generation for most predominantly white state schools throughout the southwest and south. “He fit the criteria we had,’’ said Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson, who led the search to find a new coach to replace deposed former coach Mack Brown. “He brings toughness and accountability, the X’s and O’s. He’s a good person and family man. When you have a process, you go through it all the way and do not short-change the process.’’ Strong is the first black coach in any men’s sport at Texas. So, once again, it’s not about how far we’ve come, but how much farther do we have to go… So, it was with a great sense of pride to see “The’’ state school of Texas introducing a black man to lead its most highprofile program. It was surreal… It was progress… And with that said, it’s amazing that we’re still talking about “firsts” in 2014 on the road to progress! Roger B. I, FRANKENSTEIN By Jamille Bradfield Entertainment Critic Eight feet tall. Pale greenishyellow skin. A cinder-block shaped head. Electric bolts on either side of his neck. The cumbersome physique of a defensive lineman and a limited Jamille with screenwriter vocabulary and director of I, FRANKENSTEIN, Stuart sprinkled with Beattie. grunts. Yeah, that pretty much sums up the monster better known as Frankenstein. Author Mary Shelley’s classic version, that is. But alas, there is a new and improved monster in town in the new Lionsgate fantasy action film, I, FRANKENSTEIN. Okay, so he’s not exactly new. He has after all been roaming around for 200 years. However, he is most definitely improved. As a matter of fact, the only physical resemblance between the old and new versions of the creature are the visible scars left behind from being pieced together from the body parts of multiple cadavers when he was first created by his “father,” Dr. Victor Frankenstein. From the same people who brought us the UNDERWORLD series, I, FRANKENSTEIN, is based on the graphic novel of the same title written by Kevin Grevioux (rhymes with previous). The feature film, written and directed by Stuart Beattie, essentially picks up where Shelley’s classic tale left off but with a newfangled storyline, starring supertalented actor, Aaron Eckhart as the modern-day character, whose name is Adam. “This is the story of how Frankenstein’s monster begins to earn his humanity,” says Beattie. “We call him Adam in our film and we take him on a modern adventure where he gets caught up in a hidden war between two supernatural races of good and evil. Both sides want him for their own reasons, and he has to struggle to find his own purpose and meaning. He has to figure out who he is, what he is and why he is. He makes hard choices to become the person that he knows he should be… but perhaps doesn’t want to be.” The film opens with a narrated recap of how Frankenstein’s infamous monster was created and then rejected by his father, who had promised to make him a companion but reneged on that promise, leaving the creature completely alone in the world searching for his purpose in life. Eventually, Adam returns home seeking vengeance on Dr. PAGE 17

!

Frankenstein, and it is here, where he is confronted by two supernatural races — the gargoyles (good) and the demons (obviously evil). After the gargoyles witness the creature single-handedly fight off some of Naberius’ vicious demons, the winged-stone guardians capture him and take him to their fearless leader, Queen Leonore, played by Miranda Otto, for protection. Unlike others who are traditionally frightened by the Frankenstein monster’s presence, she is not fearful of the creature. In fact, she looks him in the eye and tells him she sees potential for a soul. The queen gives him the name Adam, undoubtedly because he is the first of his kind. This is one of many biblical and spiritual references noted in this film. Another deals with the difference between what happens when gargoyles and demons die. Gargoyles’ souls ascend, while demons’ souls descend. Adam quickly learns that there is a hidden war going on between the gargoyles and the demons. It is a “hidden” battle because thanks to the creative genius of Kevin Grevious visual effects supervisor James McQuaide, both supernatural races have the ability to shape-shift back and forth between human and creature form. So basically, the humans have no idea that life as they know it might be coming to an end if Naberius, who doubles in human form as biotech mogul Dr. Wessex, played by veteran screen actor, Bill Nighy, is victorious in his quest for world domination. Both sides want Adam or better yet, need him. The gargoyles need Adam’s unmatched strength and deadly fighting skills to help them fight off Naberius and his legion of evil demons. While Naberius needs Adam or more importantly, Dr. Frankenstein’s detailed scientific journal of how he created Adam, so he can duplicate the electrophysiological re-animation of scores of corpses he has been collecting and harboring in an underground lab. Once resurrected, he plans to release the descended souls of demons to takeover the host bodies, instantly giving him an army of new demons.

Enter the leading lady, Dr. Terra Wade (Yvonne Strahovski), the beautiful, 100% human and gifted electrophysiologist, who unbeknownst to her is being used by Dr. Wessex to recreate a modern version of the science Dr. Frankenstein used to bring Adam to life. Of course, she knows nothing about Dr. Wessex/Naberious’ diabolical plan and certainly does not believe in gargoyles and demons until she meets Adam and she sees the creatures with her own two eyes. Once Dr. Wade realizes what is going on, she begins to show concern for Adam and there is clearly a visible spark (no pun intended) between them, evident by her subtle reaction to a shirtless Adam in a scene where she has to suture a wound on his back. For the record, Adam is the most attractive and physically fit monster ever to grace a silver screen. Frankenstein with a six-pack of abs and 0% body fat? Guess the studio knew they had to give female viewers something to look at, considering the target audience for this genre is teen and young adult males. Speaking of that scene, Eckhart says at 45-years-old, if he was going to have to take his shirt off, he thought he should be in shape. Part of his advance preparation for the role included working out and learning fighting techniques. “I had never heard of Kali stick fighting before and having never heard of it and then the next day somebody showing up at your door for six months, you know, three hours a day, it’s hard core,” said Eckhart. “After this movie I was tired. I really got to know stick fighting. I think I’ll have that with me my entire life. The thing about this movie really is that it’s so dangerous. You pick up a stick or whatever, a baseball bat, you know what that can do to you, right? So now you’re talking about going full speed ahead with two sticks and if you’re off by a millimeter or a centimeter, that’s your cheek. So !

it’s very dangerous and when you’re working with two actors, it’s the most difficult, but we had a good crew.” All of that training certainly paid off on screen when Adam and Dr. Wade joined forces in an attempt to foil Naberius’ plan in the film’s climax, no spoiler alerts for the movie’s ending. You will have to go see it to find out if Adam earns a soul and stops Naberius. While the film is not my favorite genre, (I’m not big on monster flicks) I actually enjoyed it and I can see why my husband loves the UNDERWORLD movies so much. It’s not likely to be up for any awards this time next year, but it is definitely entertaining. Beattie, who said they filmed in Melbourne, Australia, his native country, “with a $36 million budget over nine weeks,” did an excellent job with the writing and directing of this film. Add to that some pretty amazing special effects, my favorite was the gargoyles shape-shifting into human form, and you’ve got yourself one non-stop, action-packed fantasy film. It’s too dark and scary for young children, but right on the money for the high school/college crowd and generally any adult who enjoys mythology. Though Beattie wrote the screenplay, the story of I, FRANKENSTEIN originated from the imagination of writer/actor/producer Kevin Grevioux, an African American with a background in microbiology and genetic engineering who comes from Harvard-educated parents. Grevioux owns his own comic book/graphic novel company called Darkstorm Studios and has written for Marvel and DC Comics, as well as episodes of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien for the Cartoon Network. Not something you see everyday in the African-American community, but I am hopeful that young African-American boys and girls who are creative and can draw will be inspired by his success and perhaps open their minds to career possibilities in the comic book world. His thoughts on where Beattie took his concept? “Stuart has a great sense of the fantastic,” says Grevioux. “He fashioned a very interesting tale, using all his skills, and helped us to create something really cool.” I, FRANKENSTEIN, has a running time of 92 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense fantasy action and violence. It opens today in theaters nationwide. A delightfully entertaining film and if your budget allows for the 3D IMAX experience, it’s worth the investment. Three reels !

Mann won "Artist of the Year," "Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year," "CD of the Year," "Traditional Female of the Year," "Traditional CD of the Year," "Urban Inspirational Single or Performance of the Year" and "Praise & Worship CD of the Year." Proving that Mann's massive hit "Take Me to the King" was truly the year's best record it also earned "Song of the Year" honors for its producer Kirk Franklin. In an intimate moment at a luncheon for the 29th Annual Stellar Awards, Franklin discussed his long history with Mann, a childhood friend since age 15, and what inspired their collaboration together on "King." Franklin, Mann and her now husband David, first attained music fame together as Kirk Franklin & The Family in the 90's. "I am very proud of Tamela and I am very proud to be a part of this record in a small way," said Franklin. He added, "she is wonderful and beautiful; to God be the glory for "Take Me to the King." HALL: Stuck Under Humpty Again!! By Vincent L. Hall

The Mayor of Hoboken New Jersey, the birth town of crooner and movie star Frank Sinatra, is making big news. Hoboken was one of the hardest hit cities in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Although the tropical storm ravaged the city in 2012, they have only received one percent of their request for funds from the federal government according to Mayor Dawn Zimmer. But the real news story is just beginning. Humpty Dumpty was on the wall and his infamous fall seems unavoidable. The problem is that all the Kings horses and all the King’s men may fall with him. If you haven’t been following this epic tale, let me nurse the rhyme for you. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a.k.a. Humpty, stood above all others as he ran for reelection, but was upset that some key Democrats would not endorse him. Christie's love affair with President Obama during the presidential campaign was not the only evidence of his willingness to work with Democrats. Christy has a staunch and respectable record of leaning across the aisle to get things done in and for the state of New Jersey. As the tale unfolds, we find the

George Washington Bridge which connects New Jersey and New York, and is one of the most traversed toll stations in the United States, has been closed down. The mayor of the town closest to the bridge did not succumb to his assigned role of carrying Christie's banner. The punishment exacted upon the mayor of Fort Lee N.J seems to have been crafted as a lasting example of the Christie vengeance. The partial bridge closure lasted three stressful days. Commutes that would normally go smoothly had two or more hours added to them as the 12 lane bridge shut down to two lanes.

Since the scandal finally surfaced a few weeks ago, Christie has abandoned his post at the apex of arrogance and was last seen walking in the valley of virtue. Like all of the narcissistic leaders of our day, Christie immediately fired a few friends who could become liabilities. And it appears he may have to lie on a few others to save his presidential bid for 2016. The coming forth of Dawn Zimmer and her damning testimony as to having been told to use a developer from the Rockefeller Group or risk losing federal funds pushed Humpty Dumpty off-thewall and caused an immediate crash. According to the “Mediaite” website;

“In the wake of the "Bridgegate" revelations, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer (D-NJ) revealed that her town had received less than 1% of the Sandy relief funds it had applied for, despite having been one of the hardest hit areas of the state, with over 80% of the city underwater following the storm. Zimmer wondered, in light of the Fort Lee lane closures, if this could have been another form of retribution for her failure to endorse Christie’s reelection bid. Additionally, housing advocacy groups have reported that there is a huge racial disparity in rejections of applications for resettlement grants, with a rejection rate of 38.1 percent among African-Americans and 20.4 percent among Hispanic applicants, versus 14.5 percent for white applicants." It is indeed sad that Humpty Dumpty had a fall. And it is even worse that we come to know how residents of New Jersey have suffered as a result of it. But why is it that it takes these types of “falls” always seems to include another negative revelation about the plight of minorities and the poorest Americans? Humpty has fallen, but as usual his fall caused more damage to the least among us than to him. Again!

Marian Wright Edelman calls on President to end child poverty WASHINGTON, -- The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) has released a new report, The State of America's Children 2014, showing for the first time the majority of children in America under two are now children of color. One in three of them is poor. The youngest most vulnerable children of all races and ethnicities are the poorest age group. Over 1 in 4 infants, toddlers and preschoolers — nearly 5 million — are poor during the years of rapid brain development. CDF's report offers a deeply disturbing account of where all children stand — detailing the preventable poverty, hunger, homelessness, sickness, poor education and violence faced by America's children who will determine America's future. This year's report provides a 50 year snapshot of changes in child well-being since the War on Poverty was launched. "It is disgraceful that fifty years after President Lyndon Johnson declared a War on Poverty, millions of children in America, especially young children and children of color, still live on the outskirts of hope. I call on President Obama and America's political leaders in every party at every level to mount a long overdue, unwavering, and persistent war to prevent and eliminate child poverty and finish the task President Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther King began. The report concludes that the country can ill afford not to invest in every child. "The first step to prevent and alleviate indefensible, costly and morally obscene child poverty is to build a quality early childhood continuum of care from birth through age 5 so that every child, regardless of the circumstances of birth or lottery of geography, is ready for school and has a fair chance to reach their God-given potential. We know if we properly support children in their early years of rapid brain development, not only will they benefit, but so will all America," continued Edelman. The State of America's Children 2014 is a comprehensive Children's Defense Fund annual report on the wellbeing of children using the latest data available. The report provides state-bystate data and data by race and ethnicity. Since children don't come in pieces, the report addresses the whole child and contains data on child population, poverty, family structure and income, housing and homelessness, child nutrition and hunger, early childhood, education, child welfare, juvenile justice and gun violence. !

New PSA Campaign features ABC's Robin Roberts The "Good Morning America" anchor continues her efforts to recruit volunteer bone marrow donors to the national Be The Match Registry® while stressing the importance of research. -- Be The Match and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), have teamed up on a new public service announcement (PSA) campaign featuring ABC's "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts.

The PSAs, titled "I Beat Cancer. Twice" and "Focus on the Fight. Not The Fright," emphasize two critical ways to help patients battling blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma: supporting cutting-edge research and increasing the number of volunteer bone marrow donors on the national Be The Match Registry. Roberts also specifically addresses the critical need for more African-American volunteer bone marrow donors. "Good Morning America" will unveil the joint PSAs during its broadcast on Martin Luther King Day. The campaign, which runs through June 30, will appear in magazines and out-ofhome, digital, mobile and social media. Roberts began her crusade to recruit bone marrow donors shortly after announcing in June 2012 that she was battling myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. Though she was fortunate to find a perfect donor match

in her sister Sally-Ann, Roberts has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the need for more people – particularly African Americans – to volunteer as potential bone marrow donors in order to improve all patients' chances of finding a life-saving match. Roberts', an Ambassador of Hope for Be The Match®, celebrated her one-year transplant anniversary in September. "I'm proud to work with Be The Match and Stand Up To Cancer to raise the public consciousness about the need for more research and more volunteer bone marrow donors to help patients contending with blood cancers," Roberts said. Jeffrey W. Chell, M.D., chief executive officer of Be The Match, complimented Roberts on her "tireless advocacy" for others battling blood cancers. "Be The Match and SU2C both recognize the persuasive power of

JANUARY 24, 2014

someone like Robin Roberts, who has shown outstanding leadership while fighting her own battle with cancer," Chell said. "Through SU2C, the entertainment industry as a whole has become a leading voice in the fight against cancer which makes SU2C a natural partner for Be The Match." "We're thrilled to collaborate with Robin Roberts and Be The Match," said Lisa Paulsen, co-founder of SU2C and EIF's President and CEO. "This campaign speaks to one of the core ideas on which SU2C was founded: that every individual can make a difference in the effort to stop cancer from taking so many lives." For people with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can contribute to the cure as a member of the Be The Match Registry, financial contributor or volunteer. Be The Match provides patients and their families one-on-one support, education, and guidance before, during and after transplant.

Westin named Flagship Brand of Irving Convention Center The City of Irving and Mortenson Development, Inc. has announced Westin Hotels & Resorts® brand as the official flagship of the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas (ICCLC) Headquarter Hotel, set to break ground in Irving, Texas later this year with a grand opening slated for late 2015. Part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., the 350-room, full-service headquarter ICCLC Westin® will be located adjacent to the Convention Center and connected by sky bridge. Expected to attract large-scale conventions, new dining options to the area, and other visitor attractions, Irving’s new ICCLC headquarter hotel will further promote the economic health of the city as well as state-wide. “With the bond sale for the entertainment elements anchoring the south end of the Convention Center complex scheduled for next week, this announcement of the headquarter hotel flag to be a Westin® could not be better timed, said Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director, Maura Allen Gast. Westin’s stellar reputation in the Convention market will be an important one for Irving as this project moves forward. Their exceptional global sales organization, coupled with their Starwood Preferred Guest® program, will generate enhanced interest and further strength to Irving’s offerings as a meetings and event destination.” Last year Mortenson Development, Inc. entered into a contract with the City of Irving to develop the $90 million, Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas (ICCLC) headquarters hotel. The development company will fund, design and build the hotel, which will also include a 300-space parking garage, a sky bridge linking the hotel to the ICCLC, and 20,000 square feet of additional meeting room space. Creative & Affordable Valentine’s Day ideas for all relationships As we say goodbye to the holiday season, another important day approaches: Valentine's Day. It’s time to start planning that unforgettable date that will sweep your significant other right off their feet! Brilliance Jewelry's COO, Jonathan Ohayon, shares creative ideas that can make your special day memorable, and be easy on your wallet. They also offer a few tips for new relationships that will make your date successful and ignite that spark between the two of you!

Stay home and make dinner together. Whether you whip up something simple like a homemade pizza or spend hours concocting an extravagant three-course meal, cook and enjoy the dinner together. After all, enjoying each other’s company is what Valentine’s Day is meant for. It saves money rather than eating out at a restaurant, and you’ll be able to have intimate quality time bonding with each other. Give coupons as a gift. “Good for one free backrub.” Who doesn’t like a free massage from your sexy sweetheart? Or the coupons can say, “Good for one HBO night at home,” and “Good for one night out with the guys.” Be creative and generous when making them so he or she knows they came from the heart. Exchange homemade gifts. Homemade doesn’t have to be lame. You can make anything from homemade beer and desserts, to ceramics, blankets, scrapbooks and more. Sew a scarf out of his favorite basketball team’s colors. Print out photos from your early years and make a picture collage for her. Don’t assume a homemade gift isn’t worth the time, for you’ll find it will be the most appreciated and thoughtful gift you give your significant other. Write your sweetheart a letter. Remind them of all the quirks you love about them. Not only women are charmed by love notes. Even the studliest and most masculine of men will get mushy over an old-fashioned love letter written from the soul. Send them on a scavenger hunt. You can keep it low budget by staying in the house and writing your own cute clues on Post-it notes, or make it a larger-scale event and send your sweetheart rushing around the city on big, eccentric activities. Just remember that the more time they spend on the hunt, the less time you can spend together. Drop valentines all day long. Leave notes in his briefcase or heart-shaped chocolates in her car. Little complimentary love notes taped to the bathroom mirror will start his day off perfectly. Keep it PG-13 if you are going to remind him how much you love them while he is at work, or he may get a little flustered in public! Your partner will be sure to race home to be with you after reading those sexy and sweet love letters. Repeat a date that was special to you. If you’ve been together for a long time, recreate that special night he proposed, or the moment you realized you were falling in love and take them to that PAGE 28

special place. Get reservations at the same restaurant, rent the same movie and try to rekindle that initial puppy love and raw infatuation. New Relationship: Have a picnic. Take a walk to the park with a wicker basket of delicious food and wine and a comfy blanket. Even if it is too cold outside, you can set a blanket on the floor and have an intimate picnic dinner with her favorite tunes playing in the background. This meal will be inexpensive, the environment will be very relaxed, and you can make the mood as romantic as you desire.

The creative Valentine's Day date ideas above will ensure that you have an unforgettable time with your sweetheart without having to drain your entire bank account. The tips are available for reprint with the below credit and a direct link back to www.brilliance.com. Brilliance Eco-Luxe Jewelry Credit Brilliance is known for its conflict-free diamonds and beautiful, luxury, and eco-friendly jewelry that can be given for all occasions, whether its for a proposal, a wedding exchange, or to show your significant other how much you love them, you can find the perfect piece just for the occasion! And, if you’d like to design your own special luxury gift, Brilliance effortlessly walks you through the process of creating jewelry your loved-one will be proud to share with the world.

New Relationship: Start a new tradition. Pick that new Japanese restaurant you’ve wanted to try and declare it your new go-to sushi spot for Valentine’s Day. Take a walk at the pier and gaze at the ocean, or grab ice cream and catch an old drivein movie. With a new relationship comes exciting new traditions, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to start making memories with your sweetheart. New Relationship: Do something active. Go bowling, roller-skating, ice-skating, hike to your favorite waterfalls, or stay in and play board games. The more active you are, physically and mentally, the less uncomfortable the date will be. There is always so much pressure on Valentine’s Day to be your most charming and lovable self. Plan an active date ahead of time to remove any stress or fear of awkwardness. Finally, !

New Book exposes ‘Spirit of Fear,’ shows how God can bring victory Creflo Dollarʼs ʻOvercoming Fearʼ Available Now COLLEGE PARK, Ga. – Dr. Creflo Dollar, pastor, teacher and founder of Creflo Dollar Ministries (CDM), has released his latest book, “Overcoming Fear: Eliminating the Bondage of Fear,” today. The book teaches Christians that fear is not a normal part of life, shouldn’t be tolerated as such, and how God can bring victory.

While those fears may be commonplace, Dollar sets out to remind readers of God’s covenant, which is “full of promises that cover every possible area of fear.” “When we learn — or remind ourselves — about God’s covenant and His promises to us, we can begin to escape the bondage of fear

“Let me put my experience to work for you.”

The seeds of Dollar’s latest book grew out of his own experience with fear. A tragic death in his family resulted in a seed of fear being planted in his soul “that surfaced when I married Taffi,” the founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International writes. That fear took root and wasn’t uprooted until Dollar trusted God and had it released from his life.

in our lives,” Dollar continued. “It’s truly amazing what our lives can look like when we embrace these promises. We move from taking tepid steps to launching ourselves into all the possibilities that life and God have in store for us.”

“Millions of people live under the stronghold of fear,” said Dollar. “Their lives are stunted, limited and even controlled by it. I’ve experienced what can happen when Satan and his spirit of fear gain a foothold in our lives. But there is victory, and I’m eager to tell my story, and the story of how God can bring us victory over this debilitating condition.”

Creflo Dollar is founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International (WCCI) in College Park, Ga., which serves more than 30,000 members, and World Changers Church-New York, which hosts over 6,000 worshippers each week, as well as many fellowship churches located throughout the U.S.

Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health (www.statisticbrain.com) reveal the majority of Americans struggle with all sorts of irrational and unnecessary fears — from fear of public speaking to fear of death. Unfortunately, fear is just as rampant among professing Christians as it is in the public at large.

“Overcoming Fear” tackles a variety of common fears that most people face, including phobias, the fear of failure, the fear of abandonment and the fear of intimacy.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
